Auf Wiedersehen my Pet visits Little Russets Nursery in Slinfold
Little Russets Nursery in Slinfold were thrilled to be invited to appear in the new TV show “Auf Wiedersehen My Pet” which was shown on ITV1, weekdays at 2.00pm. The brand new series followed the plight of pet owners who needed to rehome their pets and were searching for perfect new homes for their much-loved animals. And that’s where Little Russets came in... The children at Little Russets were introduced to two lively young rabbits called Fudge and Smudge and after spending a fun and exciting afternoon with them waited with baited breath to see if they would be chosen, from 3 potential homes, to become the proud new owners of two beautiful rabbits. Luckily they did not have to wait long before they received the good news! The rabbits now live happily in Little Russets’ stable block where the children can visit them in their safe and warm environment. On warm sunny days Fudge and Smudge wriggle into their bunny leads and enjoy trips out into the woods with the children where they currently get the opportunity to hop and play in the bluebells.
Springboard lands in Crawley
The Springboard Project is a community-based charity that has provided inclusive play and leisure opportunities for families with young children and short breaks for children and teenagers with disabilities in Horsham for over 20 years. They are now opening a new centre in Crawley, situated in Langley Green, which will provide a much needed base for their existing Crawley groups for disabled children and teenagers - Grasshoppers and Buddies. Host a Teddy Day for local Family Charity
Family Support Work is a charity that has done pioneering work with vulnerable families across Sussex since 1890. Their goal is to help families in trouble to cope with today and rebuild the foundations of a strong family structure for a better tomorrow. They are planning a Teddy Bears’ Weekend on 18-20 July and are looking for children, families and schools to host a Teddy Bear event to help them raise money. Summertime at Toy Barnhaus Toy Barnhaus have everything you need to keep your kids occupied over the summer. All the stores have a wide range of outdoor toys, from scooters, skates, skateboards, to Swingball, tennis and badminton sets. For those really hot days, there are paddling pools, water guns, water bombs and catapults; great for a water fight!! Also, for those days on the beach, there are inflatables, including dinghies, lilos, beach balls, and lots, lots more. It would not be a British summer without the rainy days, there is a great range of craft toys, including stock of the latest craze; Loom bands. This has taken the toy market by storm this year, and kids love weaving their own rubber band bracelets. They have a wide selection of looms,

Calling all dogs…and dads! On Fathers’ Day, Sunday 15 June 2014, Borde Hill Garden is hosting a Dog Fun Day, in association with Guide Dogs for the Blind. You and your four-legged friend can take part in the ‘Dogs Unite!’ sponsored walk and receive a dog tag medal and a goody bag! A Fun-Packed Walk for Breast Cancer The SunWalk festival on Sunday 6 July in Battersea Park, London is a brilliant family day out raising money for breast cancer. The 5k, 10k and Half Marathon walking challenges take you past some of London’s best landmarks and with a theme of Westwind Pirates and Battersea Buccaneers, live music, great food, a children’s area (including soft play), live shows and all the fun of the fair, it’s a fundraising event not to be missed. Young Chefs produce Book of Culinary Delights Billingshurst Primary School Pupils Take Part in the Billingshurst Cook-Off. Move over Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsay, the children of Billingshurst Primary School will be publishing the latest collection of culinary sensations following the Great Billingshurst Cook-Off. After a day of nail-biting tastetesting, which resembled the final of Masterchef, winning recipes were chosen from each year group. The judges included Helen Williamson, the Headteacher, Morgan Rees, Store Manager at Kavanagh’s Budgens, Community Governor Nikki James, Branch Manager at Cubitt and West Estate Agents, Community Governor and Mark Sheath from Jengers Craft Bakery. The panel had the difficult task of picking seven winners and a staff recipe, as well as 100 top recipes, which now feature in the book. The book includes a unique collection of tried and tested family

Crawley’s Summer of Fun Crawley Borough Council is launching its Big Summer of Fun, kicking off with an al fresco cinema screening of the musical Grease on 28 May in the High Street. There’ll be a human table football tournament in Queens Square on 30 & 31 May, and from 3 June a pop-up park and urban beach will appear. Along with a climbing wall, trampolines, crazy golf, circus skills workshops and jazz band performances families in Crawley will have plenty of exciting Summer activities.

As Bubbles is not part of a franchise, it enables them to set their own agenda, lesson plans are second to none and the dual combination of fun, together with structure, work seamlessly. Jayne Torvill OBE Opens Hello Kitty Secret Garden at Drusillas Park Skating legend and Olympic Ice Dance Champion Jayne Torvill OBE officially opened the first permanent Hello Kitty attraction in Europe at Drusillas Park in May. The popular Dancing on Ice star skated to fame over 30 years ago, alongside professional partner Christopher Dean. To launch Hello Kitty Secret Garden at Drusillas Park, an opening ceremony took place at 11.30am. Drusillas’ Managing Director, Laurence Smith said a few words to mark the occasion followed by Salvatore Zingrillo, representing Hello Kitty owners Sanrio. Jayne then declared the new attraction officially open by the cutting of a ribbon alongside Hello Kitty herself. Set in an English country garden, the new attraction includes three specially designed children’s rides; a Hello Kitty car ride, reach for the sky hopper ride and a tea cup ride. There’s also a Hello Kitty House and Parlour – where face painting and other activities take place – as well as regular meet and greet opportunities with the star herself during key holiday times. Following three successful years, HSL2014 is coming to Crawley town centre for a relaxing day of great music and food on Sunday 22 June. 12 different acts will perform from 2.00pm to 10.00pm on two live stages in Crawley High Street. Closed to traffic, the charm of the historic High Street takes on a continental feel with alfresco dining provided by some of the town’s best restaurants and pubs. Last year, the weather was fantastic and the cobbled High Street and beautiful buildings made an idyllic backdrop for outdoor eating and great sounds. A total of 12 bands performed on the Crawley Festival Stage and the High Street stage Stage and over 8,500 passed through the High Street during the day with around 1,800 stopping to enjoy the gig. With a great range of good quality food and drink available from local bars and restaurants, Crawley High Street provided a real showcase for how pleasant and relaxing it can be in the heart of probably the most important urban centre in the South East Region. Garden Centre’s Hidden Gem

It’s not often that you head to a garden centre specifically to try the café, but the buzz surrounding Stooks Café at Newbridge Nurseries made me curious. When a café talks of setting new standards in garden centre dining, with a passion for creating exciting healthy dishes using local organic ingredients (everything’s from within 50 miles), and taking inspiration from some of London’s top chefs, then my foodie antennae really starts twitching! Set in a beautiful, spacious, oak-framed barn alongside the main building, my lunch buddy and I almost missed the glass-covered artesian well as we walked over it to order from the counter. Salads are king here and we found an amazing array on display to really tantalise the senses: Courgette, Mint, Ricotta & Chilli; Persian Tabbouleh; Crushed Potatoes with Olives, Capers & Herbs; and you can choose one with your main course or up to 4 for £10.95. Being the hottest day of the year so far, having ordered we went out into the courtyard dotted with tables with multi-coloured parasols surrounding a large terracotta Cretan urn water feature. With the sun shining and the scent of lavender from the sale display behind us we felt we could almost have been lunching in the South of France. The changing main course menu holds many creative delights using lots of fresh herbs and spices, many with a Middle Eastern twist.
Our food was delivered swiftly and despite being intrigued by the Seeded Turmeric Pork SchnitzeI (£9.25), I had chosen the Courgette & Feta Baklava with Minty Yoghurt (£8.25). This was beautifully light, with thinly grated courgette in lovely crispy filo pastry, yet managed to be filling at the same time, and I had the Summer Squash, Feta & Corn Salad to go with it - a fantastic combination of flavours and textures. My dining partner tucked into her incredibly deep Crab & Samphire Quiche (£9.25) which practically oozed off the plate and which she’d paired with the Endame Bean Salad. Needless to say she loved it all. We decided to share the Homemade Baked Plum Cheesecake which was heavenly rich without being too stodgy, and even our cappuccinos were impressive without the usual inches of foaming air on top - just a full cup of good frothy coffee. All main courses are available at kiddie sizes for £4.75. But if this all sounds a bit too adventurous for your little ones there’s also a range of gourmet wraps, focaccia with some inventive fillings, interesting soups, the good old jacket potato, and on Sundays the Traditional Roast with beef from a farm just 20 miles away. If you happen to be there before 11am you are in for a treat as the Fine English Breakfast at £5.95 (double portion for £7.95) is renowned locally. For a lighter start to the day there’s
Smoked Salmon with Scrambled Eggs and Dill (£7.45) or for the daring there’s Shakshuka, a North African dish with eggs, peppers and tomatoes served with grilled focaccia (£5.95). And, as you might expect, Afternoon Tea (available from 2.30pm) is done properly here and comes with a selection of finger sandwiches such as Sussex Charmer with Homemade Courgette Chutney, miniature cakes alongside fruit scones with strawberry jam and Devon clotted cream and costs £23.50 for two. I was so inspired by Stooks that I’ve been trying to recreate their salads at home and can’t wait to go back and try some more of their fantastic combinations. This place would be a veggie’s heaven, but is equally a foodie destination in its own right – and the bonus is you can grab a geranium on the way out! Mythical Maze Summer Reading Challenge There’s a magical adventure waiting for children when they take part in the 2014 Summer Reading Challenge. They can join our adventurers as they explore the labyrinth that introduces them to fantastical creatures from the world of legend and mythology, simply by reading six books from the library. They can discover the secrets of Mythical Maze and meet some of the fantastical creatures – from a Nessie to a Minotaur and all sorts in between! To take part families need to visit their local library from Saturday 12th July to sign-up for free; if you’re not already library members you can join at the same time and this is free too! Children will be challenged to make three visits to the library during the summer and collect different ‘scratch & sniff’ stickers and other rewards. Children who complete all three visits by Saturday 13th September will be awarded a certificate and medal.

Horsham PND Support Group
We are a volunteer run, peer support group for mums and dads suffering or recovering from prenatal or postnatal depression. We have been running since January 2013, and currently have over 40 members. Parents with PND can find it hard to talk about their illness, and often face stigma from others, adding to their burden. Members come from Horsham and the surrounding areas, and we meet up regularly, around 4 – 6 times a month, for face-to-face support. We meet up in playgrounds, soft play centres, playgroups and each others houses with the children, and also sometimes at the cinema or for dinner and a drink in an evening without the children! We meet up on different days and times to fit in with our members’ work and family commitments, and are always looking for new members! We are also working on a programme of activities that will allow members to take an exercise class, learn a new skill, or have a massage while the children are looked after in a crèche. We also offer each other online support via our closed Facebook Group (Horsham PND Support Group), where only other members can see what is posted. This is a great place to offload when you just need to reach out and talk with someone without having to leave the house. This group offers parents with PND the opportunity to talk about their issues with people who understand, and without being judged. Talking to others in the same position can help recover, and can help ease the pressure from family and friends. Wheels for Wellbeing Wheels for Wellbeing supports disabled people in Crawley to help them access the world of cycling. They provide cycling opportunities and facilities to help people of all ages and abilities to become more physically active and to improve their mental and physical wellbeing. Crawley Borough Council works in partnership with West Sussex County Council’s Aiming High for Disabled Children initiative, Evans Cycles, Cycling Projects and Dynamic Adventures. We have also recently teamed up with Special Olympics GB to encourage more people to take up the sport and maybe even discover the next Special Olympics champion!
Sustrans Sustrans is a leading UK charity which encourages people to travel by foot, bike or public transport. Sustrans’ Bike It project works in and with schools to get more young people cycling. Our officers deliver an exciting programme of activities to promote cycling as a great way to travel and to encourage long term behavioural change. “When we started working with Sustrans, only 3 per cent of our children cycled regularly and we had no cycle storage. Now 59 per cent cycle and we have sufficient storage for 30 bikes.” Kaye Gilzene, Headteacher, Waterfield Primary School.

Crawley Wheels for Wellbeing could have just the position for you We are currently recruiting volunteers and casual instructors to help us deliver regular Wheels for Wellbeing sessions for those with disabilities at the Inclusive BMX Track, as well as supporting our Sustrans programme to get more young people cycling. You’ll have a range of volunteering opportunities to choose from, training and support, a chance to develop new skills and the opportunity to meet new people and become a valuable part of our team. “Volunteering with the project and helping participants master the skill of cycling is hugely satisfying, and who knows, we may be nurturing a future Special Olympian!” Bill Bedford, WfW and Sustrans volunteer

And finally, a more extreme option is to pack your offspring off to a residential camp somewhere. One of the leaders in this field is PGL and, although they have venues all over the country, you don’t need to send them too far away as they have camps at Windmill Hill in Hailsham, East Sussex and Marchant’s Hill in Hindhead, Surrey. You can choose a multi-activity programme or concentrate on one subject such as cookery, film or photography. Prices range from £255 for 3 nights up to £589 for 7 nights all in. Although children as young as 7 are accepted, it’s ideal for teenagers looking for that little bit of freedom and independence.

Crawley’s Big Summer of Fun! Families and young people have an array of exciting activities to get involved in this summer as Crawley Borough Council launches its Big Summer of Fun. They will be spoilt for choice as our fun activities, mostly free of charge or a nominal fee, take place in Queens Square and the High Street throughout the school holidays. The programme kicks off with a free, outdoor screening of the musical Grease on 28 May in the High Street. This al fresco cinema is ideal for families or groups of friends to enjoy and even come dressed as Pink Ladies or T-Birds! Set in the historic High Street with its great choice of bars and restaurants, movie-goers can make an evening of it dining from a choice of international cuisine. Then on 30 and 31 May, just before the start of the World Cup, there’s a human table football tournament in Queens Square where teams of five a side play ten-minute halves in the inflatable pitch whilst attached to a pole, restricting their movements. The games are suitable for adults and older children and cost just £1 per person per game. On Saturday 28 June there will also be free parking, all day, in the Orchard Street car park. The programme ends on Saturday 30 August with a live performance in the High Street from the New City Legacy Jazzband from 11am to 2pm. Mellow music from local favourites in a traditional High Street market setting, it will be a good finale to a fun-packed programme. At The Sussex Swim School we teach children to swim from 6 months up to competition level in our beautiful warm pools in Lower Beeding & Handcross Park School Pool. Our pre-school Lessons run Monday to Saturday from 09.00 to 1pm, with after School lessons from 3.45 to 6.45 and Saturdays from 12.00 until 4.30pm. Our lessons are progressive and lots of fun. All our teachers are fully ASA qualified, lifeguard trained, first aid qualified and DBS checked. With a maximum of 6 pupils in each class we provide the individual attention your child needs. An essential life tool
Tracy Lowe is a very experienced ASA & STA teacher and has been teaching for over 30 years. She set up her own Swim School last year and is located at several different pools around Sussex, including Handcross Park School, Cottesmore School, Towers and Lancing pools. More information about summer courses at Handcross Park from 4th August to 8th August can be found on the website. All the pools are private, lovely & warm with plenty of parking. Tracy’s classes are fun, safe & small, only 6 pupils per class with a teacher is in the water. At beginner level an assistant will be provided if necessary. The best time to start swimming is when your children are babies (3 months+) to build up their water confidence using songs and activities to learn, whilst learning lifesaving skills that will take them through their lives. It’s a great way to meet new mums and bond with your babies. Once you and your child/children are competent swimmers, family holidays become so much fun, and there are so many other avenues that can be explored, i.e. scuba diving, synchro, diving, water skiing etc. Tracy’s lessons start from babies and go right up to adults so caters for all ages and abilities, from beginners right up to advanced swimmers. The statistics show that very few children achieve the required standard set by the National Curriculum of swimming 25 metres by Key stage 2. Schools do provide lessons but some children need extra assistance and improve by regular weekly lessons all year round.
