has bought the business with partner Adam Rood and their two daughters Gracie and Poppy. They have been teaching at Stagecoach Schools for the last decade and are looking forward to bringing their theatrical expertise to the people of Crawley. All Stagecoach Schools offer students the opportunity to participate in an hour of dance, singing and drama in a weekly class. As well as having lots of fun, students also have the opportunity to be part of at least one production a year and also often partake in local and national performing arts events. More than just performing arts though, Stagecoach offers skills for life. Employers are no longer just looking for sufficient qualifications. They now search for dynamic, confident and creative people and we can help to offer them these skills. Stagecoach encourages creativity, independent inquiry and allows each and every student to be nurtured to their individual needs. Rosie and Adam officially take over the business on the 12th December and are offering trial places in the spring term. For just two weeks, students can experience Stagecoach for themselves and see if it is right for them. There is no obligation to continue if it is not for them. Trampolining Competition

On Saturday 7th November, Springfit held their latest Trampolining Competition at Moor House School in Oxted. Springfit had an incredible response to the Invitational members from several local clubs joined together with the Springfit trampolinists to show off their amazing skills. Even though there were over sixty participants, the friendly and caring atmosphere that Springfit aim to create at all their competitions made sure that they all felt comfortable and welcome and definitely will have calmed any nerves. Friends and family were out in force to support their children and they are treated to a great view of the competition from the balcony. Looking up for approval from our judges were a wide range of competitors, from sixyear olds all the way up to the teenagers from the more advanced classes.

The quality of the performances wowed the judges and it was apparent that the trampolinists from all Clubs are improving with each event. A special mention goes to Abigail Field , who trains with Springfit at their Oakwood Sports Centre location in Horley, who was awarded the Marie ManhireClark trophy for effort, this was her sixth competition and she has shown such enthusiasm in her performances that the Springfit Coaches are certain she will continue to get better and better! There was an almost clean sweep for AntiGravity in first half, doing Marie proud as well as new manager; Emily. Springfit would like to congratulate them on such a fine display of trampolining. In 7 years & under Level I category Lily Murphy (who trains with Springfit at Oakwood) and Phoenix Hogan (who trains with Springfit

This was a great performance especially for Phoenix who has improved immensely since previous competitions and deserved her first ever competition medal. Phoenix and Abigail are both trained by Sharley ScottBrowne, who is one of Springfit’s Head Trampolining Coaches she is obviously doing a fine job nurturing their talents and helping them build their confidence. Head Judge Adam Reynolds also commented on how impressed he was with the quality of all the performances and also the support shown to all the trampolinists : “To have so many instructors and staff from all these clubs come along to show support for children who are clearly passionate about trampolining is great. It’s clear that the efforts are appreciated by performers and parents, and this makes it always worthwhile.” Huge congratulations must go to each and every competitor who displayed determination on the apparatus, and enjoyed the event showing great sportsmanship which helped to create such a fun and friendly atmosphere.

Mums Who Can

Mums Who Can supports mums in business within Sussex, Surrey and Kent. Our main focus is to hold Mumpreneur Markets, where mums who have their own businesses can promote, advertise, demonstrate, sell and network to the public. We also hold separate networking events, both during the day and in the evening, have a Facebook Business Directory and a Facebook Community Page. The idea of Mums Who Can was born in February 2015 whilst I was on maternity leave with my daughter, who was born 11 years after my son. When he was born, the term Mumpreneur was rarely used. Given the fact that social media sites like Facebook and Twitter had yet to be launched and mobile phones were only just starting to allow internet access, it’s not really surprising. In the world of business, Mumpreneur is now a wellknown description of mums taking the leap of faith and setting up their own businesses whilst juggling every day activities like breastfeeding, teething, toddler groups, school runs, and, of course, tantrums! I wanted to develop a company that allowed growth, created a brand and forged relationships that lasted. Mums Who Can is just that and I have found a passion that I am proud to promote and own! Our first market was held in September this year. It was a huge success but became clear very quickly that a bigger venue was needed due to the amount of mums that wanted to” shout about” and “show off” their business so, after some research, we decided to use a well-known & extremely popular leisure centre in Crawley, Sussex for the next market, being held in January 2016. Mums Who Can has quickly become a brand that is recognised and trusted. I have met the most amazing mums, developed friendships that will be long lasting and created a 5 year plan to include franchises across the rest of the UK. More information can be found at www. mumswhocan.co.uk

Bursting into February with many colours, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s sparkling musical, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, comes to Crawley. The Gruffalo’s Child transforms the best-selling children’s book into a wonderful theatre show. Filled with new songs, puppetry, humour and a touch of scary fun, “no gruffalo should ever set foot in the deep dark wood” again.

West Sussex residents are being urged to remain vigilant in light of the horrific bomb blasts and shooting in Paris yesterday (Friday 13). Although the Police say they are not aware of any intelligence that link the Paris attacks to the UK, West Sussex County Council and the Sussex force are asking all residents to report any suspicious behaviour or activity immediately by calling the confidential antiterrorist hotline on 0800 789 321 or 999 in an emergency. The County Council is working closely with Sussex Police and other partner organisations, and there are robust plans in place to respond to incidents such Paris and Gatwick, while the situation is being continually monitored. County Council leader Louise Goldsmith said: “What happened in Paris was a brutal and terrible attack on innocent people. Our thoughts and sympathies are with the victims and their families at this most difficult time. “The Gatwick Airport alert also confirms and reminds us that it is extremely important that we all work together to lessen the threat of a terrorist attack in our County and throughout the UK. I would urge everyone to be on their guard and be vigilant at all times, and report anything suspicious to the police.” The UK threat level remains unchanged as “Severe”, which means a terrorist attack is highly likely. This threat level has been in place since August 2014.

Horsham young foster carer receives national award The award celebrates Ben’s extraordinary contribution to his fostering family during the last 12 months, which has included contributing to training for potential foster families, talking to groups of children about his experiences and playing an active part in a support group for other children who help foster. Kevin Williams, chief executive of The Fostering Network, added: “Being part of a fostering family isn’t always easy, but Ben has shown enormous compassion in opening his heart and his home to children with a range of challenges. “It’s all too easy to talk about the negative statistics that are often associated with children in care – but if you show the patience, and

give the effort, that Ben has then we can all work together to make the negativity a thing of the past.” Ben received the award from Edward Timpson MP and James Tugendhat from Towergate Insurance, who support the award. The awards are an annual celebration of fostering and were hosted by television star Holly Willoughby, with HRH The Duchess of Cambridge in attendance. A centre designed to help young people access information, advice and guidance has re-opened its doors in Horsham. Previously known as The Information Shop for Young People, the FindItOut Centre reopened on 5 November aiming to help inspire young people aged 13 to 25 and make a difference in their lives. Peter Evans, Cabinet Member for Children – Start of Life, cut the ribbon alongside two local young residents, JosieAnne Nelson and Sarah Szwarc. Mr Evans said: “Young people deserve the best start in life and this relocation will help us provide the support they need. “In the past year 634 young people have sought help and advice from the FindItOut Centre in Horsham, showing this service is vital in supporting our young people.” Josie-Anne Nelson, who has been using the centre for 10 years, said: “FindItOut means everything to me. It has helped me with education, training and has recently helped me get a job.”

Sarah Szwarc added: “As a single parent FindItOut is both my support and my friend. They have helped me find housing, sort out child care and are currently helping me find part time work. The FindItOut Centre is great.” The centre provides support across a variety of areas including emotional well-being, debt management, sexual health, employment and education choices in a safe and comfortable environment. To find out more call 07894809134 or visit www. yourspacewestsussex.co.uk. FindItOut Horsham currently opens 10-2pm Mondays & Tuesdays, and 1-5pm Wednesdays and Thursdays. #BeyondBabyBlues: New mothers suffering in silence with mental health worries Half of new mothers are concerned about their mental health and many are suffering in silence, according to new research released today by NCT as it launches its #BeyondBabyBlues campaign supported by celebrities. The UK’s largest charity for parents also says that almost one in five (18%) callers to their helpline had a mental health issue to discuss and over a third (35%) had not spoken to a healthcare professional about it. The #BeyondBabyBlues campaign aims to encourage people to talk more openly about maternal mental health, to avoid the mistake of dismissing potentially serious mental health issues in themselves, friends or family and to seek help. NCT is asking people to show their support for the campaign and for each other on social media by sharing pictures of themselves linking hands with someone else, or even with themselves, under the hashtag #BeyondBabyBlues. Some women are affected by the ‘baby blues’ which can leave mums feeling emotional, irritable and depressed within the first few days or weeks after giving birth. This is thought to be triggered by hormonal, psychological and social changes associated with childbirth, but the feelings of low mood typically reduce after a few days. If symptoms persist or worsen, begin at a later stage, or even in pregnancy, it can be something more serious such as antenatal depression, postnatal depression or post-traumatic stress disorder. However there’s a danger this can be dismissed as the ‘baby blues’, therefore many mums don’t seek help. NCT’s new research found 50% of mothers were still worried about feeling low or depressed when their babies were eight months old and almost three quarters (73%) of fathers were concerned about their partner’s mental health. Research by the charity last year found a staggering lack of support services for mothers’ mental health. NCT is calling for further funding

8

from central Government for improved services for women’s mental health during pregnancy and early parenthood and better access to support and treatment. The charity is also calling on the Government to name and shame Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) who don’t have a maternal mental health strategy in place and hold them to account. Dr Sarah McMullen, Head of Research, NCT, said: “We know many women’s mental health can be affected during pregnancy or in the early weeks and months of motherhood and a lot find it incredibly hard to talk about how they’re feeling and also worry about not being a good enough mum. It’s really important they know they’re not alone and feel supported at this crucial time in their lives. Our #BeyondBabyBlues campaign is asking everyone to be more open about maternal mental health, to take it more seriously and to ask for help. “We are very concerned that over a third of mothers who called our helpline about their mental health are suffering in silence and have not spoken to a health professional about it. There currently isn’t enough support for new mothers and much more investment is needed to provide support services and train enough GPs, midwives and health visitors to recognise vulnerable new mums and give them the help they need by offering treatment options and referral if necessary. Early intervention could prevent devastating problems later down the line.” NCT’s #BeyondBabyBlues campaign is being supported by celebrities including comedian Jo Brand, a former psychiatric nurse and Coronation Street actress Jennie McAlpine, a patron of Mood Swings (a mental health charity). Jo Brand said: “The time before and after giving birth can be really stressful for women. For many of us, it is not the straightforward, happy time we associate with the arrival of a new baby. This is why it’s essential for new mothers to have the right support at the right time. NCT’s research shows

a huge number of mums are affected in some way by perinatal mental health issues and it’s no laughing matter. NCT’s longstanding experience and investment in research means they are an essential part of the fabric of childbirth in the UK from education to support and campaigning for improved services. This is why I’m supporting their #BeyondBabyBlues campaign.” Jennie McAlpine said: “Since becoming a mother myself, I know just what an amazing job mums do. I’m in awe of all of us! I can also see that so much more needs to be done to support mums whose mental health is suffering, for their own wellbeing and the wellbeing of their families. If you need help - please ask someone. I’ve seen myself how support can make all the difference.” For more information about the campaign visit: https://www.nct.org.uk/beyond-baby-blues

The Bank of Father Christmas

Some people are extremely good with it, some are pretty hopeless, and with it now replacing the traditional gift at Christmas time and becoming the present of choice for most teenagers, perhaps the earlier they start to learn about managing it the better! CASH has become one of Santa’s most popular deliveries. I do think it sad that if you now ask a child what they want for their birthday or Christmas, it’s most likely to be money. It seems they no longer have any imagination to come up with a much-desired gift, and have become so fussy they no longer want to be given anything they might not like. With £2.4 billion spent on unwanted gifts last year, and a recent survey highlighting grandparents as the main offenders, kids now seem to want to make their own decisions about purchases. Perhaps it’s just they are a more environmentallyaware generation who are trying their best to save on waste! But with children now accumulating a stash of cash, they need to learn how to spend or

by Mary Lou Burge

save it wisely. Financial management is a key life skill that, although introduced onto the national curriculum last September, most kids tend to still learn from their parents. So it’s down to YOU to help them develop a healthy relationship with their money and the old fashioned ways are probably still the best. My dear, late Dad never had an overdraft in his life and was a great believer in “if you haven’t got the cash you can’t buy it!’ Savings were the order of the day and I think quite a lot of that rubbed off on me, despite the fact I grew up in an era of easy credit. Many of our generation learnt the hard way and ended up buying stuff on credit with vast interest rather than saving – and subsequently watched the cash slip through their pockets. So perhaps we of all people are in a good position to explain the dangers of credit to the next generation. We need to instil in our children the concept that sometimes you just have to wait for things. It makes it all the more gratifying in the long run, and sets down some good disciplines for the future. Postrecession, I do think some of those old fashioned ideas have returned and people have learnt to try and hold on to their money longer! It’s worth talking your kids through the family finances and how you work out your monthly budget. You can explain the family’s monthly income and outgoings (using percentages if you prefer). They may be more sympathetic to your rejection of their request for designer trainers if they have an idea of what you spend on bills every month! A good early lesson to teach our offspring is that putting money in the bank will make it grow - as

long as you choose the right bank, so do your research well. Independent advice websites such as www.which.co.uk/money or www. moneysavingexpert.com will give you a good idea of what’s out there for mini bankers. There are some great junior accounts around, some for children as young as 7 years old, and some paying up to 6% interest if they’re prepared to leave their money there for a while. My sons chose Barclays purely for the fact they could design their own cash cards, but they’re also addicted to their new style automatic conveyor belt paying-in machines which take as little as 1p! They must have heard my mantra “if you watch the pennies, the pounds look after themselves”. The new generation are lucky to have some great technologically advanced ways of keeping track of their cash. A new ‘kid on the block’ is the award-winning online learning tool GoHenry www. gohenry.co.uk which works by you setting up an account and linking it to an account for your child, and comes with a prepaid Visa debit card. You can set up automatic pocket money transfers and control spending limits and where the card can be used, and your child can receive extra money for completing tasks and set savings goals. A challenger card and mobile app called Osper www.osper.com has recently been launched, backed by MasterCard, and can be used to withdraw cash at an ATM 6 times a month or make purchases online. Meanwhile, Rooster Bank www. roosterbank.com affiliated to Amazon, is an online piggy bank where children are rewarded for saving and keeping track of their income and outgoings. Parents give their children money through ‘virtual tokens’ and children can save it, donate it to charity or spend it in the Rooster shop – the service sends the product to parents, who approve and complete the purchase. With a generation of financially savvy kids, who knows, they may make enough of a nest egg to look after their dear old parents in their dotage. So perhaps we should embrace the Christmas cash request after all!

Lots of firsts at Copthorne Prep Did you know that zip wiring improves your long distance vision? In which case, the children at Copthorne Prep will soon all have great eyesight as they are flying through the sky, forcing their eyes to switch focus quickly between the ropes and the school buildings in the distance! The climbing and abseiling tower has been in use for several years, but the latest safety struts have now enabled the use of the zip wire – and exhilarated 6 year olds were the first to put it to the test this Autumn. Another first at Copthorne this term is swimming for the Nursery children. Headmaster, Chris Jones, is keen for as many children as possible to use the pool so – with the necessary swimming instructor qualifications in place – 3 & 4 year olds are now learning to swim every Tuesday afternoon. Not only are the children loving this opportunity, parents are delighted as any exercise improves the quality and quantity of children’s sleep and of course, from a safety point of view, the earlier children learn to swim, the better! The next Open Morning is Saturday, 6 February from 10am – 12 For further information phone 01342 712311 www.copthorneprep.co.uk

Dance isn’t just about putting ballet shoes on, standing up tall and being graceful. Yes, there is definitely a market for ballet and for a lot of little girls (and boys!), that’s the only thing they want to do. I was one of those little girls and started ballet as soon as I turned 3. My mum’s background was in dance & it seemed like the natural thing for me to do. I absolutely loved ballet and as the years went on, I started to take Modern, Classical Greek, Tap and Jazz lessons. Soon my life was taken up by dancing and it was all I wanted to do. Yes, if you can get your leg behind your head, have perfect turnout and do the splits, that’s great. If you want to follow a strict structure, a rigorous syllabus and be a prima Ballerina, then ballet could be for you. But what if you can’t? And what if Horley East Grinstead you just don’t want to?

Kicks Dance offers something different. Don’t get me wrong, I love ballet and I know children get a lot out of it. It just isn’t for everyone and when my mum started Kicks Dance in 2008, it was to fill what seemed like a huge gap in the market. Kicks dance classes focussed on fun, for children who didn’t want to the pressure of exams or competitions. It provided a safe environment for children who lacked confidence and a creative

outlet for those who didn’t. Fun, current music the children love and recognise? All of our Kicks teachers are trained dancers and our classes are by no means a free for all. Kicks classes have a structure, a degree of discipline and always strive to get the best out of our children. Our focus is more towards the fun and freedom a dance class can give you, as well as building self – confidence. I remember feeling disappointed in myself and getting upset if I couldn’t do a step in ballet, but at Kicks our children are made to feel as though they can just get up and try again. If they don’t want to do something, they don’t have to and we won’t make them feel silly for not doing it. We have fun, we get fit and we feel good doing it. When most people think about dance, they generally think about ballet. Standing up straight and copying the teacher; staying within the lines. At Kicks, we’re not afraid to go out of the lines and we encourage the children to be creative. Our classes have the same benefits that a ballet class does – teaching rhythm, coordination, independence, gross motor skills etc, but we just go about it in a different way. We have fun! We are friendly and relaxed and if you do it with your right arm when you’re meant to be doing it with your left arm…oh well! Try again next time. Because of all of this, our classes appeal to both boys and girls, as well as children of all abilities. There is something for everyone. For children who are naturally talented dancers; a time to be a leader, be creative and enjoy dancing. For those who just want to dance to have fun; a safe, friendly environment. I definitely would have done Kicks, as well as Ballet/Tap etc when I was little. It is important to realise that there is space for everything; it doesn’t have to be either/or. When my boyfriend came to watch our first show a few years ago, he described it as “Children having fun to music”. If that’s not a perfect description of dance for children…I don’t know what is. Every child is a star…give yours the chance to sparkle By Amelia Russell Owner Kicks Dance Horsham & Kicks Dance Crawley
