A Safer Internet at home

43% of South East parents of 8-18 year old don’t use parental controls online According to the latest research* commissioned by Equifax, the consumer credit information expert, ahead of Safer Internet Day, 43% of parents in the South East of England with a child aged between 8 and 18 years old don’t use parental controls on devices that their child uses, such as smartphones or tablets. This compares to the UK average of 41%. Worryingly, over a quarter of these parents (27%) in the South East with a child aged 8 to 11 years old admit to not applying parental controls to devices their child uses, leaving this impressionable group of youngsters at risk of accessing ageinappropriate online content. Parents may not always be aware of what their child is doing and who they are talking to online if they are able to use the internet in their bedroom. The Equifax research also identified that more children in the South East are able to access the internet in their bedroom than the national average. 30% of children in the South East admitted to doing this, compared to a UK average of 24%. And

of those, 15% were aged just 8 years old. Lack of control over internet usage by children is further highlighted by the fact that over a quarter of 8-11 year olds (27%) in the South East admitted to having a Facebook account, even though it has a minimum age requirement of 13. A further 19% said they have a Snapchat account, followed by 16% on Instagram, with 4% on Twitter. Equifax is urging parents to focus on their children’s online activity and to understand how to protect them. “The internet is a rich and amazing resource, which allows children to connect, research for school projects and be creative, but it’s important that parents apply the right controls to protect their children from the potential risks,” explained Lisa Hardstaff, credit information expert at Equifax. “Children are so tech savvy today that it’s easy for parents to feel confident leaving them to it; however, kids and even young people still need advice and protection. “The risks include seeing inappropriate content, being victims of bullying or even grooming. It appears that 27% of parents in the South East have witnessed or seen in the browser history that their child has accessed a website that is age-inappropriate. Our survey also reveals that 21% of 12 to 18 year olds in the South East share their date of birth on social media and 23% share when and where they are going on holiday, which could leave them at risk of revealing too much personal information and falling victim to ID or impersonation fraud. “The security of parents’ data is also something that needs to be considered. 43% of 12 to 18 year olds across the country know at least some of their parents’ PIN for their smartphones or passwords for social

media accounts. And 29% of parents admit that they don’t use the passcode function on their smartphone or tablet, which could leave an open door for their children to rack up large bills on apps and games purchases very quickly. “Safer Internet Day highlighted the issues and offered parents and young people advice on everything from privacy settings to cyberbullying and sexting, which is vital to ensure kids can enjoy the internet and stay safe.” The main rules to tell your children to help protect them online: • Always use privacy settings • When creating your password reset questions and answers, keep in mind how easy it might be to guess the answer – is the information readily available or easy to research? • Use different passwords for each account • Avoid keeping your passwords written down and never store them on your web browser • Never share passwords/PINs with anyone • Think before you share a photo • Never give your information to someone you don’t know in the real world • Don’t forget to download and install anti-virus and online security software which helps to protect your computer from outside attacks, such as malware and viruses that could try to steal information off your computer • If anyone on the internet makes you feel uncomfortable you must talk to your parents

Could you foster or adopt? Fostering means temporarily supporting a child who cannot live at home while adoption involves a legal process by which you become a permanent parent to the child. West Sussex County Council is looking for more people to foster and adopt vulnerable children in West Sussex and change their lives for the better. There is no age limit to foster or adopt and you do not have to be married or in a relationship. However for either of these you will need a spare room and desire to make a difference to a child’s life. There are young children who are waiting

The Parenting Cycle by Mary Lou Burge

Since becoming a parent for the first time, nearly 18 years ago, the journey has been the most emotionally draining, energy sapping, but rewarding experience of my life. But would I want to do it all over again with another generation? I’m not so sure. Having spent many years at the local school gate I’ve met many lovely grannies collecting their grandchildren and have the utmost respect for this secret workforce. These are people who have already been through the trials, tribulations and celebrations that raising children brings, but who have then agreed to do it for a second time. One such granny became a good friend and, having brought up her own two daughters, was caring for three grandchildren – one with several heath issues - and, subsequently, is now occasionally caring for a great grandchild. She has come full circle in the parenting cycle, not once, not twice, but three times! Circles which she says she’s “found challenging but very fulfilling and rewarding and has given me a deeper relationship with my family and a sense that I still have a vital role to play”. According to research, four out of five children in the UK are now cared for by a grandparent on a regular basis, one in four grandparents look after their grandchildren while the parents go to work, and 60% of childcare provision is provided by grandparents, saving the economy around £4 billion a year. Many of these children are of pre-school age, and many are from one-parent families. Nursery costs are also rising much faster than the rate of inflation. Childcare costs increased by 32.8% for under-twos and 36.2% for over-twos between 2010 and 2015. So financial realities mean that many, perhaps most, mothers now need to go out to work, and with the virtual absence of affordable nurseries or creches at the workplace, asking granny and grandpa to step in is often the only option left. In turn many grandparents feel they have no choice but to offer to help – a big sacrifice and commitment at a time when they should have earned some free time to put their feet up. A sacrifice and commitment that can cause a certain loss of social life with friends who are retired and able to go out for the day or ‘a spot of lunch’ at a moment’s notice. A sacrifice and commitment that can often result in weekends being busy catching up with life again, as if they were still in full-time employment. For a regular childminding arrangement to be

successful, family dynamics have to change and boundaries need to be set from the very beginning. Granny and grandpa’s traditional role was to spoil their grandchildren rotten and to leave the discipline to mum and dad. That won’t work in a daily or two to three days a week arrangement. If mum is feeling that good discipline at home is being undone every day that will begin to grate. Grandparents do have to remember that parents’ rules and boundaries are to be applied in a consistent way and although ‘granny knows best’, times have changed, opinions have changed, and they may just have to swallow theirs! But equally parents should respect that granny will have certain boundaries if the children are looked after in her house with rules that may not apply at home. Children faced with two different sets of rules and households will rapidly learn to play one off against the other, “Mummy lets me “or “Granny lets me” or “you can’t tell me what to do you are not my mum” being the favourite quotes. Discipline and house rules are something that will have to be talked about and agreed and explained to the children where old enough to understand. In addition there is the danger that grandparents could feel they are simply a dumping ground for the kids, or ignored when not needed, or not given consideration that occasionally they just cannot care for the grandchild for a good reason on a given day. All can cause resentment. Of course the other key issue that can put pressure on family relationships is money. Grandparents want to help financially and certainly wouldn’t charge what a professional childminder would, but they may also become strapped for cash if having to pay for daily bus fares, school run petrol, or after school teas. Legally, money can change hands, but if this is a payment for childcare rather than a gift, then grandparents become ‘employees’. An employer-employee relationship entails certain rights and responsibilities including potential tax liability. The state doesn’t offer much help to post-pension age grandparents as it makes the assumption that they are retired and can care for grandchildren as a normal part of family life. If the parents’ employer makes contributions to childcare costs, they might insist that the child is placed with a registered childminder. If this is the case there is no reason why the grandparent can’t apply to become registered, and so eligible for the payment. The process takes about three months, and

www.localfamilymagazine.co.uk

involves a criminal record check, an Ofsted inspection of their home, and short courses in childminding and children’s first-aid. You can find out more from The National Childminding Association (www.ncma.org.uk). If a working-age grandparent gives up their job to care for a grandchild under the age of 12 they can claim ‘grandparents credit’. This involves the working mother completing a form that allows a grandparent to receive National Insurance credits. The take up of this scheme has been very low which means there are many grandparents missing out on credits that could continue to build up their pension. Find out more at www.gov.uk So in summary, families need to work together to make a regular childcare arrangement work with understanding on both sides, but which should be easy in a loving family that communicates well. Many grandparents are making big sacrifices to look after their grandchildren, but they are doing it because they love their children and their grandchildren, and so in turn they should be valued and cherished. Grandparents Plus is a registered charity with helpful advice about caring for grandchildren. They also help those who are looking after grandchildren full-time for absent or incapable parents, and offer mediation for those having problems over access to grandchildren - their advice line is 0845 434 9585. http://www.grandparentsplus.org.uk

Minding youngsters’ mental health He said: “I’ve done quite a bit of research into wellbeing and mindfulness and, while there’s a lot out there for teenagers, there’s not a lot for younger children, Key Stage 1 in particular.

“Such a vital part of helping pupils have a healthy, happy life is making sure they know how to look after themselves, and taking early steps to help them nurture their mental health is a key part of that.

A Kent school is aiming to give its pupils the best possible start in life both academically and mentally – after launching mindfulness sessions for its youngest students. The calming lessons were introduced at Bickley Park School by Jon Poole, the new assistant head of pre-prep at the boys’ independent school. He started running mindfulness sessions for his 5-7 year old pupils to give them a chance to take a time out from the busy school day, while giving them a foundation to develop good mental health. The 37-year-old introduced mindfulness sessions to students at Eltham College, where he taught for 15 years before moving to Bickley Park this September, and wanted to replicate its success in his new role.

“Research has shown everything is becoming younger and younger, even to the extent of puberty starting sooner. The earlier we can teach them to spot the signs of when they’re not quite right, and be responsive to that, the better.” Beckenham resident Jon, who studied at St Dunstan’s College, has introduced short sessions after lunch, in which pupils at the Bromley-based school enjoy “five minutes of calm”. And he is now working with Bickley Park’s prep department to introduce mindfulness classes throughout the school. “We’re looking at ways of bringing it to all year groups so we can give our boys a good grounding in preparation for secondary and further education, as well as adulthood,” Jon added. “I think it’s important pupils, even those in pre-prep, get a chance to sit, relax and be silent. Their lives are so busy, even at a

young age, that getting a chance to take a time out allows them to recharge their mental and physical batteries.” Mindfulness has become a popular tool to help people of all ages become more aware of their mental state. The practice encourages people to focus on the present, shut out distracting thoughts and de-clutter their mind. In recent years it has been added to the curriculum at schools, colleges and universities across the country, particularly in the lead up to exams. GCSEs and A-levels may be a long way off for the pre-prep youngsters at Bickley Park, but Jon hopes mindfulness will give them the platform to deal with such stressful situations. He said: “So often we hear of youngsters and teenagers struggling with mental health problems, with statistics showing children as young as five have suffered from depression*. By offering mindfulness sessions I hope to give our boys the tools to support their own mental health, which is just as important as giving them a strong academic start.” * Figures released by NICE in 2013 showed 80,000 children in the UK were suffering from severe depression, including 8,000 under the age of 10.

Lingfield College will be the new name for Lingfield Notre Dame from Easter 2017. Following an announcement last week from Mrs Susan Rutherford, the Chairman of Governors at Lingfield Notre Dame School in Surrey, the name of the School will be changing after Easter to Lingfield College. The School has come a long way from the all-girls’ Convent it was when the nuns left in 1987, and it is now a dynamic, progressive HMC co-educational day school of nearly 1000 pupils aged between 2 ½ to 18. Headmaster, Richard Bool said that the decision had been taken after many discussions and he was delighted to be leading the School forward to the next phase. He confirmed that the Senior School will be known as Lingfield College and the Junior School as Lingfield Prep.

Cranfold’s advice on sports injuries Sport is very important for our children. It helps their physical development, their ability to work collaboratively with others, and improves concentration, assisting schoolwork performance. In girls, the majority of their lifetime bone stock is laid down by the age of 12, so lots of weight early bearing sport is an investment against osteoporosis in later life. Sports injuries in children can be very different to those sustained by adults in similar situations. Physiologically, children are not mini adults – they are quite different (as anyone who lives with a child will tell you!). In an adult, if a muscle is overstretched in sport, it usually results in torn muscle fibres. In children, especially during peak growth periods (especially boys aged 13-14) muscles are taut bands with little elasticity. When these are over-stretched it is more likely that

the bony attachment will be damaged than the muscle itself. Early diagnosis is important with children, but given good treatment, they heal remarkably quickly and very well. As children’s bones are growing rapidly, the muscles are often stretched tight, creating pressure over time on the attachments near the hips, knees and ankle joints. Conditions such as Osgood Schlatter’s or Sever’s are examples of this. Specific daily muscle stretching during this growth phase is very important – especially if your child is sporty. (see http://www.cranfoldphysio.co.uk/ cranfold-blog/stretches-for-kids/ or call our physios for more advice on 01403 721050) Balance is also reduced at this age, leading to an increased likelihood of twisted ankles. To both prevent and treat this, encourage your child to practice standing on one leg. Make

a game of it – how many throws and catches can you each do while standing on one leg? Can you close your eyes and not fall over? Keep school bags light and encourage the use of both rucksack straps to balance load and avoid back pain. Finally, posture, posture, posture! Sitting slumped over an ipad or console for hours, slinging a heavy bag over one shoulder then sitting slumped at a desk, is going to cause spinal trouble. Keeping active tones core muscles and supports developing joints: balance the ipad use with kicking a football about. We are amazing movement machines that develop according to how we use our bodies: whether we end up driving a Skoda or a Ferrari is completely down to the driver (and maybe their Mum!)

Baby signing fun with Sing and Sign Sing and Sign – Britain’s original, longest running and most popular baby signing programme is in Horsham and Crawley. We cater for babies from as young as 6 weeks focusing on the foundation for communication, then progressing to our Stage 1 classes for babies from six months focusing on routine signs that you would use every day as a parent. Then at 14 months we progress onto complex concepts like colours and the alphabet with our Stage 2 programme. Learn a new skill with Sing and Sign. Each week your teacher will introduce you to new signs. Babies are naturally gestural and as you give them the tools to communicate they are less likely to become frustrated. We are a Music Class. It’s amazing how much easier it is to learn something when you add music and at Sing and Sign the music is really great. Some of our songs will be recognisable but many have been written especially to aid you and your baby in enjoying this new skill. We have also produced a wonderful range of products to help you at home. Classes are kept small and consistent with a maximum of twelve regular families. A social time at the end of the class with refreshments and toys helps to establish new friendships. Michelle at Sing and Sign will be bringing to her classes something NEW from Easter. COME & PLAY is a new class for families that want to have fun together doing active things and lots of singing. It is not Sing and Sign but has been created for families that wanted to stay with Michelle. There will be puppets, parachute, instruments, dressing-up and lots of singing. Contact us to find out more. Come and take advantage of a free taster this season! Ring Michelle on 07984471547 or email horsham@singandsign.co.uk www.singandsign.co.uk. www.facebook.com/singandsign.horsham

“Gatwick Footgolf is doing a fantastic job in promoting a new and exciting sport. It is a brilliant way to involve a wide range of children no matter what their ability. It is incredibly accessible and a sport the children gain a lot out of due to its crosscurricular links. For example, the children can apply their maths knowledge in recording their scores and geography knowledge in reading the course map. They also obviously develop vital other skills such as team work, tactical thinking, problem solving, communication, planning and many more. “ (Hill-Top Primary, Crawley) Antlands Lane •Burstow • Horley • Surrey RH6 9TF• www.gatwickfootgolf.com •#holenewgame
