Welcome news for us parents after a long, dark winter with the kids stuck inside. We’ve got lots of great features in our Spring issue with an exclusive interview with Crawley MP and local parent, Henry Smith, who has some updates on developments in the Crawley area and what the Government are doing to actually help families. There shouldn’t be a dull moment over the Easter Holidays with our What’s On Guide, and we review yet another exciting new restaurant opening in Horsham. The News
Bluebell Railway Extension Opening
After many years of hard work and fundraising, the extension of the Bluebell Railway is due to open on Saturday 23 March bringing steam trains back to East Grinstead after an absence of 55 years. The opening celebrations will be themed around the 1951 Festival of Britain and a special through train will run from London 5 days later.
WWF Earth Hour
At 8:30pm on Saturday 23 March, switch off all the lights in the house for one hour and join millions across the globe in supporting the biggest environmental project in world history. Light candles, get together, tell stories and play board games. See www.wwf.org.ukearthhour for more information.
Our Local Sussex Food & Drink Winners
The Sussex Food & Drink Awards were announced on 31 January with some of our local suppliers winning top awards. The Cat Inn in West Hoathly won the Best Sussex Dining Experience with Wabi in Horsham as a runner up. Sussex Young Chef of the Year was taken by Jimmy Gray of Jeremy’s at Borde Hill with Charlie Taylor of The Pass Restaurant at South Lodge Hotel coming a close second. Sussex Butcher of the Year was won by John Murray Butchers of Loxwood.
Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice
Our chosen charity for this year has lots going on over the next few months, so here are some important dates for your diary. On 9 March and 13 April it’s Sainsbury’s Crawley Charity Day with stands and lots of in-store fun. Horsham Town Centre is host to Piazza Italia again this year in aid of Chestnut Tree House on Good Friday and Easter Saturday & Monday. With Ferraris and Ducatis driving into town, Italian inspired food market and activities it’s an event not to be missed. A really special Ladies only event is taking place on Saturday 18 May with the Night to Remember 10 mile Midnight Walk in Eastbourne. The £15 registration fee gets you a night pack of t-shirt, torch and medal and you also get breakfast at the finish. So rally your girlyfriends and get walking for a great cause. New free entitlement for two year olds
Children who access early education and childcare have an increased understanding and improved language, communication and interaction skills. Attendance at a pre-school, day nursery or childminder should help your child be ready for school. From September 2013, every Local Authority will offer a new early years free entitlement of 15 hours per week to 20 per cent of two-year-olds. Families will need to meet eligibility criteria in order to access the funding. To find out more please contact the Family Information Service on 01243 777807 or speak to your local Children and Family Centre. Children become eligible for funding the term after their 2nd birthday. This continues until the term after their third birthday, at which point they will become eligible for standard Free Entitlement for 3 and 4 year olds. From September 2014 Local Authorities will be able to offer free Entitlement to around 40 percent of two-year-olds. Funtastic Maths with Johnny Ball
half, Johnny held the children in the palm of his hand, making them laugh and gasp in equal measure, in a non-stop whirl of mathematical fun. It was an exciting time for many of the adults at the school too who grew up watching Johnny Ball host such programmes as Playschool, Playaway and Think of a Number. ‘The whole school was buzzing with excitement both before and after the event, and not just the children – a lot of adults were thrilled to get his autograph!’ Helen Williamson, Headteacher Billingshurst Primary School. From Investigators’ Class at Wisborough Green Primary School, ‘It wasn’t just mathematical. It was mathematical and humorous, with funny jokes. Johnny Ball tested us to the limits and inspired us to do Maths and Science. It was great fun and we learnt lots!’

information matters Promoting child literacy through fun!
‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’ took to the stage at the Hawth Theatre in Crawley from 5th to 9th March. All of the children attend Stagecoach Theatre Arts Schools in the area and had been rehearsing relentlessly for many weeks under the guidance of James Lopaz in readiness for the run of performances. For most of the students it was the first time they had worked in a professional theatre and the Children’s Choir were on stage for the entire production and performed ten shows in the week, with three on Saturday! “Joseph” played to packed audiences at the Hawth; encores and standing ovations were a must at every show! “The choir was of a very high standard and the children worked extremely hard rehearsing the show. It was a massive honour for our Students to perform in this wonderful production and they were very excited about it. This is the sixth time running that Stagecoach Crawley has been asked to provide the choir for Bill Kenwright’s National Tour of ‘Joseph’ and it is a week that the children remember for the rest of their lives. It is an incredibly busy show for all concerned and the cast really make them feel very special and part of the team. The Whirly Wiggle Story Club has been launched by children’s TV director Tracy Nampala. Tracy is a mum of two and has worked closely with children in pre-school TV for 15 years. Her credits include ‘Mike the Knight’ and ‘Get Squiggling’. The Club brings stories to life with puppets, music, movement and imagination! Music has been exclusively composed by Anton Mullan who has 35 years of experience in the TV industry. Anton’s many credits include the CBeebies favourite ‘Big Cook, Little Cook’. Each session is themed as we leap into an exciting story adventure with the help of ‘The Magic Book’. Fancy being a treasure seeking pirate or meeting Cinderella as she prepares for the Royal Ball? With role play, songs and a sit down interactive story the sessions are educational and highly entertaining. There’s a chance to meet Whirly the tickly spider glove and Wiggle the cheeky sock puppet too. The interactive sessions allow carers to join in with the fun. The club is open to children aged from 18 months to 5 years. Could you be a ‘Whirly Wiggler’? They would love to meet you. An interview with Henry Smith, Mp Henry, since we last spoke, you have taken up your new role in the House of Commons. As our Member of Parliament for Crawley do you have any news for us in what we can expect to look forward to in the area over the next few years?
Over the last couple of years, Crawley has witnessed a number of development projects which have provided the town with substantial economic and social prosperity. These new developments, such as the North East sector, will ensure that we have more community centres, a primary school and parkland space. These projects will also potentially attract new businesses into the town, which will result in job creation and economic growth. The current plans to restore the glorious Worth Park will also bring back an attractive environment for families in Crawley. Since 2007, Crawley Borough Council has been working on this project, after receiving a lot of positive feedback from the local residents. Finally, proposals to improve K2 Crawley leisure centre would develop new indoor facilities and potentially provide capacity to host larger scale entertainment and music events. I welcome all positive development projects that bring great benefits to our local residents and ensure Crawley is one of the most attractive towns to live in the South East. Crawley and Horsham now have neither A&E or maternity services. What is the plan to improve NHS services in our area? Is there any progress on plans to build a hospital at Pease Pottage? Personally, I think it will prove to have been the worst decision in Crawley new town’s history to remove maternity in 2001 and A&E in 2005 to East Surrey Hospital. The Acute facility at Redhill is at best inconvenient to reach and at worst could be life threatening in an emergency situation; East Surrey Hospital struggles to cope with the additional patient numbers from Crawley and the rest of north east West Sussex. The NHS is currently being restructured which for Crawley will mean, for the first time in many years, decisions about the future of local health care being made by Borough based doctors in consultation with Crawley patients. Both Crawley Borough and West Sussex elected councils will also have a greater say. For too long decisions have been made about Crawley remotely by those who do not live and work here. I recently met with the newly established Crawley GP commissioning body and they agree with me that in the short to medium term emergency and other services should be restored to Crawley Hospital and that the long-term ambition should be for a completely new hospital to serve the Crawley area. Since becoming Crawley MP, however, I have along with Horsham MP, Francis Maude, met with the Health Secretary on various occasions to discuss the issue and also with senior Department of Health officials.
Families are suffering from Government cuts to their benefits. What is being done to actually help families with working mothers or a stay-at-home parent?
The Government has three pillars of support for families: alleviating the pressure on household incomes; protecting the most vulnerable in society; and equipping and supporting people who can work, back into work. We still spend £90 billion (excluding pensions) a year on welfare support for working age people. With a young family myself, I fully appreciate the enormous pressure on household incomes at the moment and so am pleased that the Government has introduced a number of measures aimed at alleviating such pressures, including: increasing the personal income tax allowance to over £9,400 from April 1st resulting in 1,700 Crawley residents being taken out of paying income tax altogether and a further 42,000 residents receiving reduced income tax bills; offering a tax relief worth £2,000 per child every year to help working families pay for child care costs; introducing measures to ensure that local residents’ fuel duty costs are £40 per year and 10 pence per litre cheaper than under the previous Government; funding a three year Council tax freeze; maintaining record low interest rates ensuring that mortgage bills remain affordable (for every 1 per cent interest rate increase mortgage bills would rise by £1,000 per year); providing the largest ever cash increase to the state pension to £110.15 per week; and blocking Labour’s £193 a year energy bill increase.
You and I both took part in the Santa Run for Chestnut Tree House Hospice, our chosen charity for 2013. Are you planning to support them by taking part in any of their events this year? I’ve twice now taken part in the Santas on the Run fundraising event for Chestnut Tree Children’s Hospice and look forward to supporting this important charity in the future. Dashing through the town centre dressed as Father Christmas is fun and exhausting but most importantly reminds me how fortunate I am to have healthy children and help those less fortunate families at the same time. Over the past year our town has seen thousands of new private sector jobs created, large multinational companies locating to Crawley and apprenticeship numbers up by 89 per cent. I’m also pleased to report that recent local employment figures show that our town’s unemployment rate has fallen to 3.4 per cent.

Staring back at you My niece Alexa started getting a squint early last Summer 2012, and by July it had got very bad indeed. My sister took her to the doctor, who then referred her to an optician - nobody could see anything wrong, despite the fact a tumour filled 80% of her eye and her eye was blind. She was offered another referral to a specialist eye consultant but there was an 18-month wait ..... My sister pressed for something sooner and luckily was granted a visit immediately. That was on 20 August. After having her eye dilated with drops (very important), the consultant was able to see to the back of the retina. Alexa was diagnosed with a retinoblastoma (tumour of the retina) and on 23

August 2012, she had emergency surgery to remove her right eye as the tumour was so far advanced. She was 2 1/2 yrs old. After more tests, analysis, waiting....it was established it hadn’t spread to her body and that her left eye is still perfect. She has now had a prosthetic eye fitted and she is coping very well, turning three years old in January! But as you can imagine, my sister, her partner and all our family have been through enormous stress and anxiety – as has Alexa.

Music in the family As a busy mum of three children, I am always on the look-out for ways of keeping all my family happily entertained. With professional musicians as parents, it’s no great surprise that music is often what we turn to when we need to have a change of scene.
We love to listen to all sorts of different styles of music in our house: my 2-year old loves dancing to Stefan Grapelli and Django Reinhardt at the moment, whilst sweeping the house. My 5-year old often ends up with a fit of the giggles when we play this together.
All of a sudden music takes on a new slant when it is live and interactive and it is super-engaging for young children. Give it a try, what is there to lose? At Little Notes, we are passionate that young families get to experience real instruments being played up close by top-notch musicians, so perhaps we can also help?
If you have an older child who’s learning an instrument, they might even like to play the music themselves, choosing when to stop and start! This is a great boost for them, as they start to see a use for their music outside of their lessons. My 9-year old seems to prefer playing her violin for games like this than for a straightforward “practise” session. Or, have you an old instrument in the cupboard that you’d forgotten about from your childhood?

Bill’s used to be one of Sussex’s best kept secrets. From humble beginnings as a greengrocers and café in Lewes, it is now a rapidly expanding nationwide chain having been bought by the restaurateur Richard Caring, owner of Cote. After much anticipation and some controversy, Bill’s Horsham finally opened in December taking pride of place in the Old Town Hall. The restoration of this historic building fits beautifully with the style of this buzzy café – a shabby chic warehouse feel with oversized cream lampshades mixed with industrial-style lighting and enormous bundles of dried chillis hanging from the ceiling. It’s not so much the grocery store of other locations, but there are plenty of Bill’s products dotted around if you fancy a spot of shopping whilst you dine. Upstairs is more sedate (can be used for private parties) and, despite the rather fabulous chandeliers, I sense probably lacks the atmosphere of downstairs. Surprisingly for a Monday lunchtime, the place was pretty full, but we didn’t have to wait too long for a table and staff were friendly and efficient.
The Guardian recently named Bill’s one of seven great places for breakfast which is easy to see when tempted by the delights of the full Bill’s with added bubble & squeak (£9.45), eggs royal with smoked salmon, hollandaise and seeds (£7.50) and French toast smothered with banana, strawberries, walnut yoghurt and maple syrup (£5.95). And they are ready and waiting for you from 8am Mon-Sat (9am Sun). But with daily specials like chargrilled gammon with Asian slaw (£9.95) to compliment the main menu staples and lots of tea-cakes and buns, Bill’s would fill the hunger pangs any time of day. Although the menu is extensive I knew I only wanted my old favourite, haloumi, hummus and red pepper burger (£8.95)– a thing so delicious I get cravings for it and have failed to even get close to recreating the original at home. I put it down to the sweet chilli and yoghurt sauce. My dining buddy went for the fish pie with queen scallops which she enjoyed so much she was tempted to order another!

It’s the rather quirky Britishness of this place that I love – the fact your tea comes in a large metal pot in a variety of colours, that you can sip hedgerow fizz (£3.95) and that your skinny fries come in a small pail. And the pudding menu continues the theme with Eton Mess (£5.95), lemon meringue pie cheesecake ‘in a glass’ with yoghurt ice-cream (£5.95) and the sublime Bill’s marmalade and brown bread ice-cream with chocolate sauce (£4.95). Bill’s is just how I imagine the café that the little girl went to after the Tiger had been for tea! I only wish there was one in every town, but by the way they are expanding there may well be.

get an adult portion of burger and skinny fries and the waitress was happy to add cheese and bacon too for a modest amount. And as they looked so moorish sitting on the counter top, we just had to add the infamous Bill’s brownies into the ice-cream mix!
