Another year flies by! Another year has flown by. I can’t believe we’re already talking tinsel and turkeys again, particularly having basked in temperatures more like summer at Halloween! With Christmas soon upon us, in this issue we are highlighting some of the best food that Sussex has to offer, with a call to use local suppliers as much as possible for the festive season. Interestingly, our restaurant review is all about a new Horsham eaterie that does just that, with all its top quality ingredients coming from a few miles radius. Food Rocks Christmas at Hickstead

What can you buy for 20p? Today 20p does not buy a bar of chocolate, a packet of crisps or a can of drink, so what will it buy? At Copthorne Prep School, the School Council took on the challenge of getting their classmates to donate 20 pence pieces as part of World Food Week when they discovered that a child in Africa could be fed for 20p! Armed with red cups, they encouraged each class to contribute 20 pence pieces to pay for school meals to help end child hunger. By the end of the week we were able to provide 2413 meals, having raised £482.70.

Santa’s new County Mall Grotto Following Santa’s grand arrival at the County Mall, Crawley on Saturday 22nd November, he’ll be available for magical fun as he settles into his brand new, bigger enchanted Christmas Grotto.

Crawley’s Continental Christmas Market Crawley’s very own continental style Christmas market will be in full swing following the big Christmas lights switch on, on 22nd November. Visit the festive wooden chalets selling a selection of treats including bratwurst, snow cakes, doughnuts and personalised gifts. This is in addition to the weekly market on Wednesdays and on the High Street on Fridays and Saturdays with its fantastic selection of fresh fruit, veg and meat.

Winter Activities Although the adventure playgrounds enter their shut down period during the winter months from Thursday 20 November until Tuesday 3 February, there will be some additional ‘Open Days’ at each site in December and January, for a small charge of £2 per child.

Open Days Waterlea is holding a Christmas Party on Wednesday 17 December from 4.30pm until 7pm with traditional games and a Christmas buffet. Cherry Lane host their Christmas Party on Thursday 18 December from 4pm until 6pm with Christmas nibbles and a drink provided. Billingshurst Primary School wins award for Travel Action Plan On Friday 14th November the school was awarded a Travel Mark 3 certificate by the Local Authority in recognition of this work. The assembly was attended by our local councillor Mrs Amanda Jupp, with Pene Mather and Clare Faulkner from West Sussex County Council. The award, bestowed upon a small percentage of schools within the County, pays tribute to the school’s unique Travel Plan, which sought the views of parents and staff and outlines a series of steps to improve the conditions for walking and cycling. As part of this project, the whole school was surveyed on their mode of transport to and from school, to ascertain why people still decided to drive. Interestingly, the findings highlight the enthusiasm with which the children have embraced the campaign, with up to 39% of children opting to cycle or scoot if given the choice. The impact of the Travel Plan is already being realised. As a fledgling Bike-It School Billingshurst Primary School has seen an increase of 30% of pupils regularly cycling, walking or scooting to school. The school has also benefitted from cycle racks and shelters and is now working with the Highways Agency to create proper pathways to improve safety for pedestrians in areas of concern. Helen Williamson, Headteacher, Billingshurst Primary School comments: “We are very proud to be presented with this award. The Travel Plan is overseen by a Committee of governors, staff and parents who have all lent their support and greatly enhanced the work of the school community in this area. The campaign has created a host of cross curricular learning opportunities for the children, from undertaking traffic surveys to discussing the effects of pollution.” With the arrival of winter the temptation to rely on the car for the school run may seem irresistible, but how many of us stop to consider the environmental impact or the congestion caused around our schools? Billingshurst Primary School’s Travel Committee has been working hard to understand the issues, which govern travel choices, to bring about a change in the travel culture of the whole school community. The school has devised an action plan to help overcome barriers which may prevent staff and parents taking the healthy, sustainable choice; inspiring everyone to walk, cycle and car share whenever possible.

Crawley Ariel Students transform into their personal heroes for Children in Need Students from Ariel’s Crawley Academy dressed up as their own personal hero to raise money for Children in Need. From nurses and policemen, to air hostesses and rock stars the children really went to town. The idea was for the students to dress as someone who really inspires them, even the stars of the Great British Bake Off, Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood made an appearance! Although the competition was fierce the prize for best costume went to Hope Fenn who came up with her own Superhero “Sewing Girl”, as this is her favourite hobby along with acting. Hope even designed and created her costume herself. Crawley Academy Principal, Abi Paige said “the children did a fantastic job dressing up and it was great to get them thinking about who inspires them in everyday life and why. It’s a lovely thing to get children helping other children through Children in Need, our students are always keen to participate”. In total Ariel raised an amazing £575 across their drama academies in Burgess Hill, East Grinstead, Crawley, Haywards Heath and Steyning.

Benefits of a childminder I am a registered childminder in Crawley and offer the 15 hours a week of free Early Education to 3 and 4 year-olds known as the free entitlement. I can also offer free Early Education to eligible 2 year olds. As I talk to parents about this, I realise how many people do not realise that childminders can provide this service as well as pre-schools and nurseries. I thought it would be useful to outline the benefits a registered childminder can offer to parents.

Consistent care – a close one-to-one relationship between your child and their childminder – your child will be looked after by the same person each day and can build a very secure relationship with them. Childminders generally offer cover for each other should they be sick or unable to work on a particular day, these childminders will be known to your child from attending childminding groups or joint activities on a regular basis. A childminder is in the great position of being able to look after a baby from whenever parents have to return to work after the birth, until the child reaches an age where they no longer need after school care. A home from home – your child will be looked after in a home environment, within a small group of children of different ages. For very young children, this means they can be in a quiet, homely environment, while they get used to a new adult and one or two other young children or babies. Individual needs of each child to be taken into account and as the child is more

settled, they can have the opportunity to socialise with different age children from other families. Children experience real-life learning opportunities, getting out and about daily in the local community and further afield. Children are cared for with their brothers or sisters and are involved in the day to day life of the community, for example going to pick up elder siblings from school. Flexible care - Full or part-time care for a baby or young child, changing to before and/or after school care as the child starts school. Some childminders, such as myself, are happy to offer term-time only contracts if requested as it fits around their own families needs. Others offer overnight care or cater for shift patterns.

Professional and safe – Childminders in England who look after children under 8 are required by law to be registered and regularly inspected by Ofsted. They must undergo initial childcare training and a training in first-aid for babies and children which must be regularly updated. They also have public liability insurance, a medical check and an enhanced DBS (formerly CRB) check. Many childminders will hold further qualifications and those who are part of a professional association such as PACEY (Professional Association for Childcare and Early Years) are supported to undertake continual professional development improving their practice.

And it looks as if many others may be following me. A seismic generational change is taking place and we seem to be falling out of love with the whole bulk grocery shopping experience. After various scandals involving misleading discounting and dubious supplier trails, the big supermarkets have lost our trust. We still want value for money, but not necessarily the cheapest products. We have also become fussier about taste – something we seem to be rediscovering. Post-recession we have become far more savvy shoppers, holding on to our cash for longer and using smaller, more convenient, local stores again. We are shunning the anonymous supermarket shopping experience for the honesty, friendly service and smile of local suppliers. We’re prepared to pay for quality and great taste – particularly for special occasions – and let’s face it, what can be more special than Christmas? Living in Sussex we are extremely lucky to have some of the best artisan food suppliers in the country right under our noses. Earlier this year I reviewed Stooks Café and, in this issue, we visit Meat in the Middle - both local restaurants with a policy of mainly using produce from suppliers within a 20 mile radius. Crawley also has its own weekly market held in Queens Square on a Wednesday and on the High Street on Fridays and Saturdays with some fantastic quality fruit, veg and meats. The benefits of buying local food are many; it’s fresher - as it may have only been picked hours before; it’s tastier - as you only buy what’s in season; it’s healthier - as vitamins deteriorate with long storage times; and it’s good for reducing food miles. Buying locally ensures more money circulates in the local economy helping more local farms and food enterprises stay in business and keeping local people employed. So ‘Go Local’ this year, and everybody will get to have a happy, healthy, delicious and more prosperous Christmas.

Meat in the Middle of Horsham by Mary Lou Burge

You might be surprised to learn that one of the exciting new eateries to hit Horsham this summer was opened by a guy who has more recently spent his time as personal bodyguard to the likes of Nicole Scherzinger and Cheryl Cole. Owner, Ben, spent last year touring with Rhianna, staying in some of the best hotels in the world and eating an extensive range of burgers, when he got the idea to provide the ultimate burger experience back in his hometown. And this is not just good news for Horsham diners, but also for local businesses as MITM’s policy to use local suppliers is benefiting the likes of Enoteca in the Carfax who provide the wine, King Beer of Horsham who supply most of the bottled beers, Seriously Real of Pulborough who make the ice cream, and the bread comes from a fine craft bakery in Billingshurst. Most importantly, the meat comes from well-respected Warnham butcher, A & R Bailey’s, so quality and freshness of ingredients is assured. In terms of décor, this is certainly not your

usual US style diner, with a much simpler, starker look. The two long wooden bench tables give the place a sociable, communal feel with ‘troughs’ running down the middle containing menus, cutlery, napkins, sauces and condiments. Your techy obsessed brood will be grateful for the USB points to plug into but, strangely for a restaurant, what they may find most fascinating is the bathroom. There’s £60 worth of pennies set into the floor and the door is created using an eclectic mix of odds and ends, full of moving parts to keep the little ones - and not so little ones - entertained. The airbrushed logo on the wall, the illuminated sink, and the tiny sections of exposed Lego bricks will all intrigue, but let’s hope the kids don’t spend too long in the bathroom and get to the food! MITM offers a whopping 11 types of burger, from The Purist – a handmade, free range Sussex minced beef pattie topped with smoked English cheddar (£7) to Big Ben’s Belly Buster – two burgers with caramelised red onion, Sussex smoky bacon, Sussex chipolatas, melted red Leicester cheese and fried egg (£15). There’s also The Piquant Chicken (£9), The Porky Boar, made with minced Sussex free range boar (£11), and the popular Sprung Lamb (£10) which is topped with grilled Merguez sausage. The Steak (£22) consists of a 28-day hung 12oz rib eye, with mushrooms, rocket. Chunky chips are available as an optional side for all burgers, along with an

onion brick, coleslaw and parmesan chili corn cob (all £2.95). The Pretzel Sub (£8), generously filled with pulled pork and a rich sauce, and half or full rack ribs are both burger alternatives, whilst vegetarian options include The Four Bean Pattie (£9), The Pepper Pattie (£9) and the Goat’s Cheese Salad (£10). If you’ve got room for pudding after all that you can indulge in strawberry cheesecake, rocky road, and chocolate brownie (all at £5.50) which are also all locally made and served with excellent ice cream from Seriously Real. Kids have their own menu and can build their own little tray with a meat dish, a side and a drink. The choice of beef, chicken, mini boar or little lamb burger, mini pulled pork sub or a pepper pattie as a main dish, can be accompanied by chunky chips, seasonal vegetables, corn on the cob or mixed leaves. So there should be something there to please even the fussiest little eaters. It’s still early days but MITM is fast becoming the destination of choice for Horsham burger fanatics, so if you happen to be one don’t miss out and give it a try. All is not lost. If you ever find yourself in conflict, there is a local charity that can help. West Sussex Mediation Service was formed in 2000 to help resolve conflicts in the community. They pride themselves on providing a free service. The charity uses trained local volunteer mediators. They come from all walks of life. Many have been volunteering for years and have become very skilled at their trade.

The main area of work for the charity is neighbour disputes. Subjects that come up include, noise, antisocial behaviour, dogs, parking, hedges and boundaries. They also offer a free intergenerational mediation service for families suffering conflicts, across the generations. Workplace and Family Mediation (divorce/separation) are fee based.

The Mediation Service has been successful in helping people resolve their differences by bringing them together to find a solution, which is acceptable to all concerned. This is

Have you woken up to the importance of Home Fire Safety? “If there’s a fire in my home, the smoke will wake me up, right?”

Wrong! The facts: • Just two breaths of fire smoke can knock you unconscious • The smell of smoke doesn’t automatically wake up you up! The poisonous gases produced by a fire numb the senses and put you into a deeper sleep • A child can die from smoke inhalation in less than a minute Many people are still under the misapprehension that if a fire breaks out in their home the smell of smoke would automatically wake them up. The reality is that it doesn’t and the smoke is likely to kill you long before any flames ever reach you. A smoke alarm gives you that vital early warning to a fire and can buy you valuable time to leave your property safely. However, a recent national survey revealed that only half of the householders who own a smoke alarm said they tested them on a regular basis. So, be honest, when was the last time you tested yours?

The value of a Home Fire Safety Check One of the ways West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service have been reducing the amount of serious fires in the home over the last few

years is by offering some of the county’s more vulnerable residents a Home Fire Safety Check. A Home Fire Safety Check is a free service involving a pre-arranged visit by a firefighter or Community Safety Officer to a resident’s home to offer advice on how to reduce the risk of fire and to fit smoke alarms or other specialist detection and protection equipment where appropriate.

FREE HOME FIRE SAFETY CHECK Are you or is someone you know eligible for a Home Fire Safety Check? West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service wants to hear from you if you are: • Are 65 or over and living alone • Have a physical disability or frailty affecting their ability to either summon help or escape in an emergency • Use a Community Alarm or Emergency Monitoring service like Careline or Lifeline • Have a sensory impairment or difficulty hearing a standard smoke alarm • Have a cognitive impairment affecting their ability to remember things or retain information, such as dementia

In the last decade firefighters have carried out tens of thousands of these checks across the county and the number of people being seriously injured in house fires has reduced as a result.

Protecting the most vulnerable While standard smoke alarms give most people adequate time to react and leave their homes safely, for some that isn’t always possible. For those who may have mobility difficulties or a disability, swift escape may not be so easy. West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service works closely with local Telecare providers to offer ‘radiolinked’ smoke alarms to those who wish to maintain independence in their own home but who may be more vulnerable to injury from fire. Known as Community Fire Link, the concept is simple – if the smoke alarm goes off, whatever time of day or night, a call will automatically be made to an alarm centre. This means that nobody has to dial a number, lift a receiver or even push the red button, to speak to an operator and summon help if needed.

Firefighters will visit your home by appointment to offer advice on how to prevent fires, what to do should a fire break out and, where appropriate, fit smoke detectors, including specialist alarms for the deaf and hard of hearing and the radio-linked smoke alarms.

Being a Scout! Part of a town centre in Sussex was cordoned off while police officers search for two men believed to be armed with a gun. Officers said two men threatened the woman at her home at about 1130 BST, and she sought refuge in the Santander bank in South Road, Haywards Heath. Sussex Police said most of the town centre was reopened at about 1600 BST.

“Performing to the top of their potential”

Children who take part in extra curricular activities could have an advantage over their peers according to new research. Exposure to drama, dance and singing classes encourages students to use their imagination, have a positive self-belief and develops their social skills. Many of the skills taught during performance arts activities are transferable. Singing and dance classes improve numeracy skills through visualising rhythm and number patterns. In drama classes students develop leadership and communication skills through learning as part of a team. The dance classes also make movement fun! Children become stronger and fitter and develop a positive attitude to exercise. A recent survey of 1500 parents whose children regularly attend performing arts activities has explored the benefits that training in the performing arts has in all aspects of a child’s life. Over 90% of the parents surveyed in August believe that their child felt more confident at school and an impressive 85% claim to have seen an improvement in their child’s academic performance. Parents noted an improvement in their child’s ability to: • Express opinions to adults they don’t know (94%) • Listen attentively (89%) • Find innovative solutions to problems (91%) • Make new friends (92%) • Became more confident at school (93.7%) • Seen an improvement in academic performance (85%) The study commissioned by Stagecoach Theatre

Arts backs up research highlighted in the governments ‘Taking Part’ initiative and the DICE (Drama Improves Lisbon Key Competence in Education) report, which showed children who take part in drama activities are more likely to be better at problem solving, feel more confident when communicating and are more innovative and entrepreneurial. Jo Weeks, Principal at Stagecoach Theatre Arts in Crawley says “Many of the children who come through the doors at our schools do so to build their confidence.
