THE BEAUTY OF BANGALOW
WRITTEN BY KYLIE MITCHELL-SMITH
We take a day trip to beautiful Bangalow, minutes west of Byron Bay, to explore the hinterland village. From historical town halls to heritage listed building façades to the surrounding valleys and waterfalls.
First appearing on the map in the 1880s, the town was originally known as Bangaloe – a name said to be derived from an Aboriginal word, ‘Bangalla’, meaning a low hill or species of palm tree. History runs deep through the streets here.
Bangalow is a charming, pretty town, synonymous with an enviable lifestyle and a bohemian chic culture. An array of independent shops create the fabric of the main street and are housed in the most adorable buildings we ever did see.
The community make up the soul of the town, from small business owners to artists and farmers who live and work in the region. Like the fine folk from the Eltham Hotel (just up the road) who recently popped up with Bangalow’s latest food offerings, Ciao, Mate! and You Beauty.
Ciao, Mate! is an ode to Italy, with fresh pasta dishes such as the Zucchini Linguine and Prosciutto, Mozzarella & Smoked Honey pizzas - delicious! The quaint restaurant façade is complemented by traditional red and white interiors that open out to a lush garden terrace.
A hop down the road is You Beauty - all about the taste of Australia with a contemporary twist. From Croc Toast to Kangaroo Skewers to a good old Steak & Chips. Billed as a casual eatery and corner bar, with themed nights like ‘Jazz Thursdays’ and ‘Records with Friends’ on Sunday afternoons - it’s a vibe.
With a variety of cafés to choose from, you can grab and fly at
Sparrow Coffee Co, who grind one of the finest Allpress coffees around. Then pick up a bunch of sculptured blooms from The Flower Bar Co. next door and head to the local Farmers Market (behind the Bangalow Pub) held every Saturday from 7-11am.
Speaking of markets, the Bangalow Showgrounds is home to a fabulous artisan market held on the 4th Sunday of each month. More than a market, it’s like a mini festival in the most picturesque garden setting. Grab a bite from the local street food vendors, and sit under the towering poinciana trees, all the while listening to live and local beats.
The town’s talented community of musicians, artists and creative directors, curate a program of events each year, such as recycled

fairs, the fun and fabulous Billy Cart Derby, a boutique film festival, and the magical Christmas Eve Carnival. Famed musicians like John Butler, The Waifs, Floodlights and Girl and Girl, have also graced the stage at the heritage listed Bangalow A&I Hall.
Across the road from the iconic town hall, you’ll find Polish Bangalow located in the art deco Masonic Hall. A vintage furniture and restoration business run by the Pratley family - locals who have been restoring antiques from across the globe, for over three generations.
For a hearty breakfast or lunch pop down to Butcher Baker, located central to the town in another heritage listed building that has seen many an evolution. The current owners are from the Northern Rivers and, with a background in hospitality, there’s a selection of freshly baked treats to entice, and quite possibly the most delicious donuts around!
We can’t go past a local craft beer and counter meal at the Bangalow Hotel, located at the top of the town as you head out towards Clunes. And for those of us who like a brewery experience, Common People Brewing Co. has also popped up in the industrial area. With an array of beers to experience and a food menu curated by The Brewer’s Kitchen – they are ‘Open for Beersness’ Thursday to Sunday.
For Asian groceries, tea, teapots, trinkets and dumplings head to Red Ginger, with a sister venue in Byron Bay, it’s a Northern Rivers staple. Serving tasty Yum Cha from 10-4 daily, take your time in the garden surrounds and peruse the many cookbooks that adorn the walls.
If you’re staying awhile, book a cosy night at the Bangalow Guesthouse. Luxury accommodation central to town, the 1900s homestead crowns an elegant property on the banks of the Byron Creek. A short walk to the neighbouring retro Bowlo, for street food curated by local chefs, and the ever popular ‘Indian Bowl’ on Wednesdays from 4:30pm.
A day trip or weekend away to Bangalow always involves shopping at one of the independent retailers. We can’t go past the stunning array of books, jewellery, clothes and more at Wax Jambu Emporium, and the quirky and colourful wares at Abracadabra come with the rich history of Bangalow circa 1970s (one of the original shops in town, it has seen many transformations over the years). For ethical, quality gifts and homewares head to Our Corner Store and more divine goodies await at Heart of the Home.
Take a tour of the myriad of artisans and local designers - such as ROWIE The Label - that inhabit the urban chic Station Street Arts Precinct. Grab a coffee and some tasty treats at Woods and watch the day go by.
Heading out of town, stop off for fresh baked bread at the Bangalow Bread Co. and for local provedores and organic fruit and vegetables pop into the oh so cute Bangalow General Store - an historical building that has been restored to its former glory - full of locally sourced provisions.
There’s a collective pride in charming Bangalow that starts from the market grounds up, with tastefully preserved buildings and a community that love their town.

VIBRANT AND BLOOMING
WRITTEN BY DONNA RISHTON-POTTER
The gift of flowers can say and mean so much – joyful and mood lifting, heartfelt and caring. But in an industry designed to make people feel good, there has always been a story left unsaid. Where do your flowers come from? Although late to bloom in Australia, the Slow Flower Movement has been gaining momentum, and those paving the way are getting their hands dirty and creating awareness – with one seed planted at a time.

POPPY AND FERN
It’s a gloriously sunny day at The Farm in Byron Bay and, as I arrive to interview Jess Connor –the owner, florist and flower farmer behind Poppy and Fern, I am told, “Jess won’t be long, she’s just over in the field picking flowers”. You really can’t get fresher than that, and the happy blooms in the garden shed store are proof. Bursting with life and colour - the cheerful poppies sway as the bees greedily jostle for pollen. “The bees love our flowers”, laughs Jess on her arrival.
Work wasn’t always this wholesome, however. After a schoolbased traineeship and the following years spent involved in every part of the floral industry - from traditional retail to high-end weddings in the Whitsundays to wholesale and brokering –Jess was dissatisfied. “I had started to focus on sustainability in my personal life, but looking at the industry I was a part of made me feel hypocritical. There is a lot that’s hidden from consumers.”
A while back Jess noticed that there were very few florists in Australia that focused largely on sustainability and seasonal flower farming. It is rather, accepted knowledge that flowers are (most often) imported from overseas producers, forced to grow out of season in unnatural conditions, sprayed with heavy chemicals, often frozen then sprayed again to come through quarantine, placed in a petroleum-based foam and wrapped in plastic. “Not one part of the process is planet friendly,” adds Jess. Determined to prove there could be another way, Jess spent years of trial and error, reteaching herself until she got the practice right. She was offered a space at The Farm in Byron Bay, so her first change in business was to grow her own flowers. With 60-80% of Poppy and Fern flowers grown onsite, the rest are sourced from local farmers who share a similar sustainable ethos.
Next came Jess’ mission to eliminate the use of all floral foam – known as ‘oasis’. Made from micro plastics and petroleumbased chemicals, oasis is non-biodegradable and often just gets washed down the sink. These days, Jess and her team at Poppy and Fern employ innovative methods to construct their designs instead. Using chicken wire (reusable mechanics) and other botanical materials for weddings and installations, whilst bunches of flowers are sold in reusable vases or wrapped in biodegradable paper.
Channelling her frustration around the lack of education in sustainable flower farming and floristry, Jess also set up her up her own school - Flower School Byron Bay - that offers a range of classes from beginner to advanced, that focuses on environmentally conscious design techniques, sourcing local, and seasonality, thus bringing her journey full-circle. And, with an abundance of seasonal flowers grown onsite, Jess’ students also get the full ‘seed to vase’ experience.
For Jess, life is best when she’s connected to the land. If you ask her, she’ll tell you there’s magic in the soil - and feeling the energy her happy blooms radiate, you can’t help but believe her. @poppyandfernflowers
Jess and Marni aren’t the only florists and farmers taking a slow approach. Here are some other locals paving the way by getting back to nature:

BLOOM HARVEST
Like Jess, Marni Hills is a flower farmer determined to change the way the flower industry operates. Although she had always loved flowers and the art of floristry, it wasn’t until Marni and her family moved to an idyllic farm property on the edge of the picturesque Burringbar Hills, that she considered a career in the industry. With the perfect space but zero knowhow, much research ensued. Then, as serendipity would have it, Marni took one of Jess’ courses and was completely inspired.
Three years later - BLOOM HARVEST is a thriving flower farm and Marni’s courage has paid off. Reflecting on the early days Marni recalls the massive learning curve she embarked on when realising the industry she loved was not at all what it seemed. “For something so beautiful and ‘natural’, the flower industry leaves a massive environmental footprint,” she says. “The first thing people instinctively do when they receive flowers is smell them. If they only knew where that bunch originated from and what chemicals they’d been doused in, they’d realise it’s the worst possible thing they can do.” It’s food for thought.
Marni is resolute about spreading the message of sourcing locally grown, seasonal flowers that can be safely sniffed, handled, and enjoyed. Mapping out a seasonal template, turning the soil and planting the seeds herself, she finds the beauty is in working with nature and using what the earth gives her. “Buying fresh, seasonal blooms is a creative choice, because nature is dictating what bunch you will receive. It’s a happy gift and so much better for the planet.”

FORCE OF NATURE
WRITTEN BY DONNA RISHTON-POTTER
With an illustrious career in the design world and a name synonymous with style, one would expect a certain ego to accompany such a highly regarded talent. But when I meet Designer, Author, Stylist, Creative Director, and Photographer – Mr Jason Grant – I find instead an authentic unpretentious soul, exuding manifold creativity.
FEATURE 14
We are here to talk about the launch of Jason’s new book – Force of Nature. A two-inch hard-covered wonder, that can’t be pinned down in genre. Suffice to say, it’s a creative guide, a visually stunning catalogue of Jason’s own images, woven with thoughtprovoking musings, words of inspiration and prompts for finding your creativity - it’s an immersive experience. It’s also the expressive, personal story of a self-confessed ‘people pleaser’ who has finally become, unapologetically himself.
Born in Launceston, Tasmania, Jason’s earliest memories are ones of being in nature. Climbing trees, playing in his garden, clambering over rocks along the rugged coastline of his hometown, walking bush tracks to get to school and collecting curiosities along the way.
Although his family moved to Melbourne during his childhood, this sense of curiosity and ‘trusting nature to guide you’ has fuelled Jason’s creativity ever since. In the heyday of design magazines and just as ‘Styling’ became a concept, Jason’s star rose in Melbourne and then took him onwards to Sydney before the Northern Rivers finally beckoned. Drawn by that inexplicable longing many of us once-out-of-towners have had. The sense of nostalgia this area holds that seems to harken back to one’s own childhood memories. And certainly, this is the case for Jason, who was seeking the authenticity that came with days of old.
Getting back to a simple life, and being grounded by nature, Mr Jason Grant is a man who walks gently on the earth - earning himself a reputation for being a designer respectful of his surroundings and sympathetic to the history of a place, in the process. Someone who, no matter what artistic endeavour he undertakes, understands the value in allowing the space - the natural surroundings and the bones of the structure he is working with - to speak. “There is a certain alchemy in letting the elements speak and come together,” he says. “To me, nature and creativity are thoroughly interconnected.” Talented as he may be, Jason insists creativity is within us all. It comes from the soul. It’s not reproduced or copied. It’s innate, authentic, and innovative. “Sometimes we are required to unlearn what we’ve been taught in order to tap into what’s in us and around us.” How do we do this? His pages are signposts…
Through the simplicity of his images – a vignette of seashells, a feather, a painted fern splayed across weathered floorboards, the shadow play of a palm across a whitewashed wall, the vibrant lilac and fizzy lemon of an ice-cream held in his hand – Jason is baring his soul. His words give us clues along the way – ‘Happy people walk at their own pace.’
Then, nearing the end, an arrangement of coloured pages – no words, no images. A pause, to reflect on what he’s been saying all along. Nature speaks to us in colour and design and if we lean in to listen, she will guide us. That is the powerful Force of Nature.
‘Turn Everything off and find yourself in the quietness’ he says – herein is a roadmap for us all. mrjasongrant.com
LOCALE Magazine was fortunate to have Jason co-collaborate on and photograph our stunning front cover - featuring Poppy and Fern on location at The Farm Byron Bay. His sweet Boston terrier, Gertie, was star of the show!

THE MIGHTY MACADAMIA
WRITTEN BY ALISON BONE
Delicious, versatile and velvety smooth, the macadamia is Australia’s only native nut and flourishes here in the Northern Rivers. From couverture chocolate and gourmet muesli, to nourishing face oil, award-winning liqueur, tasty meals and fun animal encounters, our local macadamia farms and cellar doors provide unique and indulgent experiences.
Brookfarm DISCOVER 16
Commercial production of the macadamia began in earnest in the 1960s, with orchards sprouting up along the north coast. One of the Northern Rivers most inspiring macadamia success stories dates to 1988 when Pam and Martin Brook arrived in the Byron hinterland. Taking over a barren, run down dairy farm they planted 4500 macadamia trees. Pam started experimenting in the kitchen to create macadamia muesli, fruit and nut mixes and oils, which she and Martin sold in the local markets with their two young sons Will and Eddie, in tow. They also planted 45,000 native trees to regenerate the rainforest. 35 years on, the farm is a lush, rainforest oasis and a brand synonymous with sustainability. “Brookfarm itself, the business, the products that you see are all really born and influenced by the macadamia” says Will Brook, now CEO.
Cape Byron Distillery
In 2016 the Brook family launched Cape Byron Distillery. Inspired by the botanicals that flourished in the regenerated rainforest, their signature Brookies Dry Gin features 17 native botanicals grown on site, including lilly pilly, finger lime, native ginger and Davidson plum, while macadamia oil creates the signature textured mouthfeel. Macadamia is also the star ingredient of Mac. Liqueur, an Australian version of Frangelico, made with roasted macadamia shells, roasted macadamia nuts and wattleseed. Rich, nutty, and multiple award winning, “It’s a true testament to the epic produce out here in our own backyard,” says Eddie Brook, now Operations Manager. Visit the distillery and cellar door for a fascinating Rainforest and Gin Tasting Tour, or relax on the deck with a cocktail, tasting flight or grazing board overlooking the rainforest and macadamia trees. capebyrondistillery.com
Duck Creek
Chocolate lovers can indulge in all sorts of goodies with a visit to the farm gate at Duck Creek, just outside of Newrybar. The farm has close to 17,000 macadamia trees and is renowned for its European couverture chocolate-covered macadamias. Treat yourself to Macadamia and Cranberry Clusters, Belgium Salted Caramel Chocolate or our favourite, the Orange Chocolate Macadamias which taste like Jaffas but better! This is also the spot to stock up on raw or salted macadamias by the kilo, unique Macadamia and Manuka Honey, and Natural Macadamia beauty products.

And for a genuine paddock to plate experience make sure to have a meal at Three Blue Ducks, where macadamias are often featured on the menu. thefarm.com.au
Avilla Farm
When Ann Leslie and her husband took over a macadamia farm in 2008, she discovered that cold pressing and filtering macadamias resulted in a pure, luxurious oil that is also light and easily absorbed. “Macadamia oil is full of beneficial properties such as antioxidants, vitamin E and omegas, and is super hydrating, locks in moisture, and can help reduce fine lines and soothe irritated skin,” says Ann. Her resulting Avilla Farm skincare products includes a Face Oil, Face Scrub and Hand and Body Lotion. avillafarm.com.au

FOR THE LOVE OF WILDLIFE
WRITTEN BY ALISON BONE
Byron Bay Wildlife Sanctuary is celebrating the change in seasons with a Spring Festival packed with fun and immersive animal encounters and thoughtfully curated kids’ programs –all aimed at fostering love and respect for the natural world.
Formerly known as Macadamia Castle, this iconic hinterland venue has undergone a remarkable transformation since being taken over in 2021 by Wildlife Recovery Australia – a not-for-profit company with a mission to rescue injured animals and revitalise threatened species. For the last two years, the team at Byron Bay Wildlife Sanctuary has worked tirelessly to turn the run-down amusement park into a thriving native animal sanctuary and bio-park, one of the very few of its scale in Australia.
Home to more than 100 animals, including kangaroos, koalas, snakes, and a wombat called Manda, the sanctuary aims to educate and inspire people to live alongside wildlife.
“It’s all about creating wildlife lovers for life,” says Joshua Carruth, Head of Mammals.
Under the guidance of expert handlers, children can safely interact with animals, join feeding sessions, see wildlife shows and learn about habitat and conservation. And it’s a win/win because every dollar spent at the sanctuary is reinvested in conservation, rehabilitation, and regeneration. Along with animal encounters, there’s also mini golf, a nature-themed playground, water park, café, and a gift shop with ethical, sustainably sourced products from brands like National Geographic.
Park entry includes scheduled activities like the bird presentation, kangaroo and emu feeding, reptile talk and a chance to meet the koalas. Optional extras include one on one encounters with Socrates the barn owl, and resident sugar gliders Sebastian and Samson. With spring here, there’s also lots of special events coming up. “The Spring Festival is a great opportunity to enjoy the warmer weather with family and friends, all whilst exploring Byron Bay Wildlife Sanctuary and learning more about native Australian wildlife,” says General Manager Amanda Gorvin. Wildlife Guardians and Keeper for a Day programs give budding wildlife enthusiasts the chance to join interactive activities and gain hands-on experience in caring for wildlife. While Puggles Kids Club is a day school holiday care program that includes keeper talks, movies, and arts and crafts. Other activities offered from September through November include Moonlight Cinema, Wildlife Trivia hosted by Dr Chris Brown and Mandy Nolan, Kids Wildlife Watercolour Class, weekly Qigong classes for adults, various creative art courses and family nights. Check the website for details.

Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital is based at the sanctuary and does an incredible job providing professional veterinary services for injured, diseased, orphaned, and displaced native Australian animals. Completely mobile, the hospital can be deployed anywhere in Australia to respond to a wildlife emergency such as bushfire, flood, or mass stranding. A not-for-profit organisation, the hospital urgently needs help to stay open. Check their website byronbaywildlifehospital.org to see what you can do.

SHOUTING PRAISE FOR THE ARTISANS
BY DONNA RISHTON-POTTER
The Northern Rivers Farmers Markets are home to some of the most highly regarded artisanal products in the country. From award-winning spreads and dips to nutritious fermented krauts and locally made, fresh-from-the-dairy cheeses. Come for a stroll with us as we fill our baskets with a bounty of the tastiest local offerings - perfect for delighting guests or keeping all to ourselves.
Hallowed be Thy Cheese
Every good grazing board starts with cheese, and Cheeses Loves You cheese is fit for the gods. Deb Allard has been in the biz for 18 years, learning the art of cheese making from the masters in Europe - she’s made mozzarella in Venice and La Feuille du Limousin in France. Her divine cheeses are created at the Upper Burringbar dairy farm she operates with hubby Jim and are unlike anything you’ll find in the supermarket. Using fresh Jersey cow milk, which is ‘far superior’ due to its higher fat, protein and healthy bacteria
content, Deb makes around 22 different cheeses - from fresh ricotta, feta, brie, and Cambozola, to haloumi, blue and Romano. What makes them so special? Made in small batches, Deb’s cheeses are preservative and additive free – meaning the character is full-bodied and the flavour, out of this world. (Deb’s also a perfectionist – spending two full years perfecting her brie!). We recommend her incredible award winning (Grand Champion no less) Probiotic Kefir.

Where There’s Smoke
For lovers of good smoked produce, The Bay Smokehouse is one market stall not to pass by - nor is a jar of their multi-award-winning Smoked Fish Rillettes. With a taste so sublime it has, unsurprisingly, garnered owner Damien Curtis a cult following – especially with the celebrity chef ilk. Founded in 2017, The Bay Smokehouse was born after Damien - an English born documentary filmmaker and Indigenous rights advocate - spent time in Arnhem Land, hunting with the Yolngu peoples and learning the traditional smoking techniques of cooking mullet over smoking campfire embers. Taking his skills back home to Byron Bay, Damien imported a traditional smoking kiln from England and began experimenting with his daily catch. Six years on and Damien’s unwavering support of local fisheries, commitment to sustainability, and passion for showcasing traditional techniques, has earnt him critical acclaim and seen his sought-after gourmet delicacies feature on the menus of some of the country’s most prestigious restaurants. Grab a jar and do what we didspread liberally over fresh sourdough! thebaysmokehouse.com.au
Dip into Delicious
Another prize winner you can’t go past is Baraka Byron Bay, whose luscious range of dips are next level. Founded in 2006 and enhanced since 2016 by Alan Schwarz, Baraka prides itself in producing authentic Middle Eastern and North African products made of the highest-quality ingredients - that are not only gluten free, but also free of GMOs, preservatives, colours, and flavours. Using traditional recipes passed down through generations, Baraka’s mouth-watering dips are made consciously, ethically, and sustainably – all driven by Alan’s passion for sourcing local, organic produce, and his deep conviction for minimising waste. Elevate your charcuterie board with the fresh taste of Beetroot Hummus, spicy Moroccan Capsicum Salsa, or Smokey Babaganoush, and then - for a true taste-sensation - try Baraka’s new ‘dessert’ range. The very first of its kind, this trio of ‘hummus-based’ desserts come in chocolate (think Nutella flavours), mocha and decadent vanilla. A Gut-Loving Gift
Katerina Lazareva of Byron Fermentary is abounding with passion when it comes to the healing benefits of fermented foods. Over the years the career of this Russian-born, professional chef has come full circle – from the high-pressure of fine dining kitchens, to reconnecting with her roots and employing a slow, regenerative method of farming to create her artisanal products. Based at The Farm in Byron Bay, Katerina is one of the unique few artisans in the region who grows, farms, and harvests her own produce. Allowing the seasons, growing conditions, and resulting ingredients to inspire her recipes, she operates a ‘closed loop system’ – meaning there is absolutely zero waste. A vegetable may be fermented, leaving behind peels and leaves, which Katerina will then transform into another product – a gut-loving drink for instance. Any further leftovers may be dried and made into salts etc. – making Katerina’s endeavour endlessly diverse and mind-blowingly creative. Rest assured, whatever delicious product you find at Katerina’s market stall is guaranteed to be healing, wholesome and a gift from the earth. byronfermentary.com.au

NO BONES, NO ETHICAL WORRIES.
No Bones is the brainchild of Tahlia, Yasmina and Laurie. The restaurant in Byron opened it’s doors in April 2018 with a vision of bringing people together over good food, meat eaters and vegans alike, in an attempt to change the way we think about what we put in our mouths. Let’s face it, the future of food must be one of sustainability and every time you choose a vegan meal, you’re helping reduce your footprint, so every meal counts.

SPICE UP YOUR LIFE
WRITTEN BY ALISON BONE
From the fiery kick of jalapeños to the tanginess of lime and the earthiness of cumin, Mexican cuisine is bold, flavourful, and fun. Throw in the laidback beach vibes of the Northern Rivers and good times are guaranteed. Here’s where to get your Mexican food fix this side of the border.

Lolita’s Cantina
Lolita’s Mexican Cantina
Lush, leafy, and atmospheric, this friendly eatery would be right at home on a beach in Mexico and ticks all the boxes for a fun night out. There’s even an outdoor kids’ playground for keeping the little ones amused, and a child-minding service on the weekend. We suggest getting things started with a Coconut Chilli Margarita, festive Piña Colada or Sangria and a platter of Doña Cholita’s Totopos – starring organic locally made corn chips. Hailing from Mexico, Lolita’s Head Chef, Armando Icaza brings the authentic flavours of his home country to life using traditional techniques and Northern Rivers produce. Mostly gluten free, there is plenty for vegetarians too and every dish explodes with bright, zesty flavour and just the right amount of spice to pack a punch without being overwhelming. To get the most of the experience try sharing several plates, or opt for the Chef’s Banquet – but be prepared and come hungry because the chef is generous. Menu standouts include the Popcorn Cauliflower with agave syrup, lime, achiote mayo, Chicken Pibil Tostada, Matcha Kingfish Ceviche, and sensational Charred Sweet Corn topped with a memorable jalapeño lime mayo and grated ricotta salata. Make sure to leave room for the Churros – crispy on the outside, perfectly light and fluffy on the inside – they are huge and come with choice of chocolate and caramel sauce. For a delicious taste sensation, try pairing with a Brookies Mac. lolitascantina.com.au
Miss Margarita
An iconic Byron destination, Miss Margarita, or Miss Margs as its affectionally known, has been luring diners for 10 years with tasty Tex Mex cuisine and lively atmosphere. Just meters from the beach you can enjoy ocean views from upstairs, along with chequered floors, pink walls, and Frida Kahlo and Mother Mary paraphernalia galore. The Burritos are packed, the Nachos – made with crispy house-made corn chips – are loaded, and Crispy Snapper Tacos with chipotle slaw, mayo and lime zest go down a treat too. Dining with kids? There’s plenty to tempt fussy eaters on the Little Gringos menu. And how about the Margaritas you ask? Made with fresh local limes and Patrón Reposado Tequila they definitely hit the spot. Go Classic, or opt for Chilli & Cucumber, Pineapple or Mezcal. Daily happy hour runs from 5-6pm with $15 selected cocktails. missmargarita.com.au
La Casita
From the creators of much-loved (sadly closed) Fleet Restaurant, comes this vibrant Brunswick Heads eatery, showcasing traditional décor, the freshest Northern Rivers ingredients and the classic taste of Mexico with a modern twist. Dining with friends? The banquet is great for sharing, or work your way through the tantalising drinks menu with your own selection of dishes. Think Tostada de Pescado with raw fish, lime, seasonal fruit, coriander, salsa macha, Ballina Camarones – crumbed king prawns, Sweet Potato & Fish Empanada, and Taco Ahogados De Pollo, made with La Casita’s famous chicken mole. In the mood for an ice cold cerveza? The Astrid Arribba is a subtly spiced house lager (a collaboration with Yulli’s) with hints of coriander and pineapple. La Barrita Mexican Cantina
With laid back beachy vibes, this family-run, family-friendly eatery in Salt Village is a good choice for a casual Mexican meal in rustic surrounds. Start with a round of Poppers – fiery jalapeño stuffed with house smoked cream cheese, then crumbed, fried, and served with citrus sour cream. Follow with house specialty, Flaming Fajitas, flambeed at the table, with sides of sour cream, lettuce and tortillas so you can wrap your own tacos. Finish with delicious Caramel Apple Taquitos smothered with dulce de leche. On the drinks side of things, bartenders will whip you up the perfect Paloma, while Margaritas come straight up, infused with chilli, blended with strawberry, or prepared with Mezcal and orange bitters. labarrita.business.site
Taqueria Chihuahua
Craving a quick snack or meal? Every day is taco day at Taqueria Chihuahua, a cute Byron sidewalk café serving up authentic Mexican street food with a contemporary twist. The focus here is on free range meat, freshly caught fish, locally-sourced ingredients, and great presentation –no easy feat with tacos! Take a seat under an umbrella and tuck into the tasty range, featuring traditional soft corn tortillas, slaw and house-made pico de gallo. The Pescado is most popular, made with beer battered fish, charred corn, and roast pepper salsa. We also loved the Tempura Queso with battered haloumi topped with cumin aioli, fresh coriander, and waferthin sweet potato chips. Looking for something more substantial? Add Nachos, Quesadillas, or a side of Corn on the Cob or Jalapeño Poppers. For a delicious cocktail, there’s no going past the Oaxaca Old Fashioned, made with Tequila, Mezcal and chocolate bitters. Margaritas are good too, while Mezcal afficionados can indulge in a selection of artisanal Mezcal from the degustation menu.

We love the murals, splashes of vibrant colour and lively music at this modern Mexican eatery in Lennox Head. Tell us a little bit about yourself?
I live in Cabarita Beach, with my wife Sophie and three daughters. For the past 10 years I’ve been in hospitality, kicking off my career at Blackboard Café on the Gold Coast, where I began coffee roasting. I opened a bunch of other cafés, which I then sold and moved down to Northern NSW.
How did you get involved in hospitality and starting a coffee company?
I started working in a café in Melbourne where locally roasted coffee was served. When we moved to the Gold Coast, I noticed there wasn’t any speciality coffee per se. My dad supported me to open my first espresso bar on the Gold Coast and, along with the passion I had for food, Blackboard was born.
You are part owner of two local eateries, tell us about them?
I am one of the partners of Tucker and Jordy’s, along with Phil and Jordy. Tucker is a daytime café, with a focus on good food and coffee, a place for locals to meet.
Then came the Pizzeria – it’s the spirit animal of Jordy, a nod to his US roots fused with Italy. We eat there as a family, good drinks and tasty pizza - a winning combo. You’ve got quite the following on Instagram with your blog Recipearce, how did that take off?
INSPIRED TO COOK WITH NICHOLAS
We caught up with local foodie, inspiring cook and family guy, Nicholas Pearce, to chat about creating a successful coffee roastery, opening restaurants,
My wife Sophie has a podcast and Instagram page, it’s an extension of that and a play on our last name, her audience were asking about the food we cook at home.
A shift for me was when a mum sent me a message and said that Recipearce inspired her son to cook - I then realised how much I also love cooking.
Tell us about your love of food, what do you cook and eat?
I really loved to cook growing up, but back then it was still quite a female focused industry. Then Jamie Oliver burst onto the scene and his enthusiasm and enjoyment of food and cooking felt familiar. I realised I could do that, it’s all about giving it a go, good food, made simple.
My ideal meal is one that I’ve caught or hunted, be that fish, deer or goat. Then I cook it up at home for friends and family - preparing something I gathered is my ultimate.
As a keen surfer and fisherman, what do you love about the ocean and Northern NSW?
I started surfing later in life, but I’m keen and really enjoy surf foiling, diving and fishing. The ocean is where I connect to nature, I love the sense of freedom and adventure - it’s all about being healthy and understanding the seasons.
We really love where we live - the produce, the place, we are proud of this region, it’s our home, so for now I’ll just keep posting cooking videos with the intention to inspire others.

DINE & VINE: GASTRONOMIC ADVENTURES
WRITTEN BY AMANDA KUHN
Locale’s newest offering - Dine & Vine - is a small collective of local food enthusiasts dedicated to exploring the hidden culinary treasures within the picturesque Northern Rivers region. In our inaugural gatherings, we embarked on a journey to review* two iconic destinations: the rustic Farm & Co and the charming Tweed Valley House.
FARM & CO
Selection: The Signature Banquet Menu
Farm & Co, located near Kingscliff in NSW, is a culinary gem that offers a delightful experience centred around seasonal farm-fresh produce. The rustic restaurant exudes a relaxed ambiance with its open-plan seating, allowing guests to relish the fresh country air and breathtaking views. Upon arrival, the friendly staff seated us at a long table with bench-style seating framed by a large open window showing off the picturesque sunflowers they are made famous for. Our group selected the signature banquet menu, a feast featuring a variety of dishes, including their famed Pizza Fritta with macadamia nut butter. The adventure continued with the creamy Byron Bay Stracciatella, paired perfectly with farm-fresh tomatoes, and the standout Char-Grilled Chicken with melted mustard. The Wood-Smoked Lamb Shoulder stole the show for most of us, offering a succulent tenderness with a zesty salsa verde. The Roasted Cauliflower was a pleasant surprise, roasted to mouth-watering perfection. Sides like Charred Broccoli Steak with sunflower hummus and macadamia dukkha elevated the dining experience, complementing the flavours beautifully. Our meals were paired with chilled Butterfly Kisses Prosecco and house-made cocktails with salt-rimmed glasses. The dessert was a decadently creamy Vanilla Panna Cotta with strawberry granita and milk crumbs. Farm & Co. also accommodated allergies in their catering, ensuring everyone at the table had the same experience.

TWEED RIVER HOUSE
Selection: Five-Course Tasting Menu, plus the Five-Course Wine Pairing option
Tweed River House offers a memorable culinary journey. From the sea to the land, the five-course tasting menu was an adventure of flavours that left us thoroughly impressed and satisfied; despite the extended serving time of over three hours. The Australian Spanner Crab stole the show with its expertly cooked and perfectly plated presentation. This meal set the bar high for the rest of the experience. The Brandy Flambé Lobster Tail followed, and it was a succulent delight. Bursting with flavour, the lobster tail left us all wanting to lick our plates! Following was the Drake Creek Duck, and with a table of duck fans, this was defiantly one meal we were all pining for. The duck was tender, juicy, and an absolute delight. The fresh McAuley’s Farm Beef was then served and was nothing short of amazing. Each bite melted in our mouths, and we savoured every moment of this culinary masterpiece. To finish, we were presented with a mouthwatering chocolate experience, which was truly a perfect ending to an exquisite dining experience. Although the price per person is a splurge, the quality and creativity of the dishes do make it worth every penny - however, unless you are very particular about your wine pairing, you could easily still enjoy your experience with just one or two glasses of wine selected off the menu. The FiveCourse Tasting Menu offers an unforgettable dining adventure that is a must-try for food enthusiasts. Despite the slightly slow pacing of the meals, the delicious array of dishes leaves a lasting impression.

FOR THE NORTHERN RIVERS FELLA
WRITTEN BY KYLIE MITCHELL-SMITH
We at Locale care about our men - from health, to happiness, to their overall wellbeing. With mental health awareness on the rise, and suicide still being the leading cause of death for men between 15-45 years, we believe we can do better –here are just a few ways we can help support our blokes.
It’s not always easy for men to talk about their feelings, there tends to be a ‘soldier on’ approach, we asked local men’s health advocate Jared de Thierry from Casuarina’s JDT Training at the Hyundai Surfing Australia High Performance Centre, why - here’s what he had to say.
“I’m actively trying to remove the stigma surrounding men’s health, one men’s club at a time. If I can get guys to join a fitness class, that enhances all aspects of their health, friendships begin to form, barriers break down - the talking starts; they feel connected in a safe environment,” Jared said.
Below is an array of local experiences, from MEN’S hubs to MEN’S beauty and grooming products to MEN’S fitness - there’s something to suit every fella out there.
MENS FITNESS
Casuarina’s Fusion Wellness is all about wholistic health and is an inclusive space that aims to connect the community - from the yoga mat up. Try a range of different styles, from Meditation to Barre, to Pilates and Yoga – then grab a healthy breakfast with your classmates at Tucker downstairs.
If high impact, adrenalin pumping classes are more your thing, High Level Boxing Gym, adjacent to the swimming pool in
Casuarina, is a great place to de-stress and join a tribe at the same time.
Social Remedy in Byron Bay is an interactive wellness club, ideal for men, with ice baths, steam rooms and strength classesfollowed by a yoga and recovery session.

MEN’S SHEDS & MORE
The Tweed Heads Community Men’s Shed takes a four-pillared approach when addressing the issues of men’s health – to engage, to support, to share and to encourage – in a non-exclusive, non-judgmental environment. It’s a welcoming space for all (Men) to enjoy.

BOHEMIAN DAYS, CHIC NIGHTS
WRITTEN BY KYLIE MITCHELL-SMITH
The North Coast lifestyle is all about carefree days lazing by the beach, long lunching on farm tables and wandering the valley hamlets. The laid-back, coastal culture attracts the free thinker - inspired by the natural surrounds.
SPELL SHOP 38
There’s a natural bohemian personality that flows through the streets of Byron Bay to Coolangatta and beyond. Local designers draw inspiration from a vintage past with style icons like Stevie Nicks and Cher, to name a few babes.
We delve into some of the local collaborators and designers we’ve been swooning over - crafting clothes that are perfect for picnics, festivals, and everyday wear.
If you haven’t heard of SPELL, you quite possibly live under a rock. A Byron Bay success story, the label evokes the gypsy wanderer in you, born from a local market store, growing to global acclaim.
Created by local sister act Isabella and Elizabeth Abegg, Spell epitomises boho chic, with a selection of long, flowy dresses and feminine blouses. Fused with the prettiest of patterns - the range includes an assortment of shoes, accessories, swimwear, and bespoke wedding dresses, made to order.
ARNHEM clothing brand was born and raised in Byron Bay, by local designer Arnhem Bickley; a self-proclaimed flower child, she draws inspiration from her bohemian childhood. The Arnhem boutiques can be found in Byron Bay and Margaret River - with a plethora of retail stockists dotted across the country.
Consciously crafted with the outdoors and travel in mind, a percentage of the label’s proceeds go back to the planet - the brand is all about supporting local and acting global.
Aptly named designs like Freya and Serendipity include vibrant play dresses, the cutest twin sets, tie tops and summer sarongs - plus a whole lot more.
Locally owned and designed OAK MEADOW is all about telling a story that transforms into collectable pieces. Founder of the fashion label Madeline Lee began selling kids rompers on Instagram, and presto she is now distributing worldwide with a boutique in Byron Bay.
A showcase of the sweetest floral frocks, with a soft colour palette and flowing fabrics, ideal for the coastal climate.
Picture a dreamy Talulah Dress or a Juniper Bloom Smock as you tip toe through a field of tulips - each piece tells a unique story.
Two Tweed besties Rose Madden and Vanessa Cave are behind the eclectic and super fun label NINE LIVES BAZAAR. The co-collaborators and designers share a love of a vintage past, good times and freedom of expression.
Popping up at a festival near you, Nine Lives have created a tribe of boho babes, donned in vibrant colours and cool fabrics. The unique brand bursting onto the fashion scene with gusto.
Creating memorable moments in time wherever the garments go, with a striking palette that includes splashes of orange,
blue, green and purple, fused with fabrics of suede, velvet, cotton and denim.
(We are all about the latest Enamor Dress from the ‘Promised Land’ range - a shimmery multi-patterned velvet, that’s simply stunning.)
KIVARI label was created in 2014 by Kirstin Keysers, affectionally known as Kiki, born from her connection to the land and ocean, and her love of travel. Evoking the nomadic spirit in you, Kivari Label is a quintessential beach and lifestyle brand. Today Kivari has boutiques across the East Coast of Australia, from Bondi to Byron, to Burleigh and Noosa. The Byron Bay boutique takes pride of place in the centre of town, with bespoke windows dressed to impress.
The range includes an assortment of beautiful dresses, tops, bottoms, knitwear and jumpsuits. Earthy tones match effortlessly with layered textures - we suggest pairing the Khalo Mini Dress with threads of gold jewellery and ankle boots.
Kivari represents a strong yet soft, adventurous womanwith sustainability in mind.
ROWIE is an independent Byron Bay label created by designer Rowie Moore, a Northern Rivers local. The label includes a charming boutique in The Woods precinct in Bangalow, a flagship store in Byron Bay’s Industrial Estate and a residency in James Street, Fortitude Valley, Brisbane.
The full range includes outwear, tops, bottoms, silks and knits, and is a combination of neutral and dark hues, with its own blended style. A brand
designed with simple, clean lines and a touch of coastal charm.
Styles like the Vera Silk Velvet Pants that pair perfectly with a ribbed knit, designer sunglasses and leather slides, to create that chic Rowie look. Changing with the seasons, we can’t get enough of the wearable art, Kie Sherpa Jacket, spotted at Splendour.

STYLING FOR SUCCESS
Spring is upon us and following a year of uncertainty and riding the waves of the ever-changing market, buyer confidence is returning, and we are excited for what is to come. So how can you ensure you get the most out of the spring selling season to stay ahead of the game? With qualifications in property styling and design and years of experience in the industry, Nicole and Emma at Coastal Abode Properties know just how important this initial step in the listing stage is and share their tips on how to style for success.
You only get one shot at that first impression, and the age old saying ‘first impressions last’ is absolutely true. How many times have you been scrolling through listings and one catches your eye. Whilst photography and beautiful marketing are key, the home itself needs to stand out.
Setting aside a few days or a few weekends to prepare your house to sell could gain you thousands and save time on the market.
Start by walking through your home with fresh eyes and imagine you are a potential buyer. Is your home light, airy, clean? Can buyers walk through imaging themselves living there or are there too many personal belongings and clutter? Sometimes when we have been living in our home for a long time, we find it hard to see past these things. Viewing your home from a neutral perspective is a helpful step in de-personalising the home and a step forward in creating a canvas to sell. Your home also needs to feel welcoming from the street; buyers should feel the energy and be eager to get inside. Spending time improving your entrance can create that first impression and set a positive expectation of what’s to come. Pressure cleaning the roof, gutters, windows, driveways, garage
door, balustrades and fences shows that the home is well looked after, and is inexpensive to outsource if you do not have the time.
Often forgotten is the entry, but it is important to remember that is the first thing that buyers see when they enter your home and should set the tone. Treat it like the rest of the home, small or large it should feel welcoming, light, and airy. Open plan, flow and light are the biggest things we hear when it comes to living spaces. Buyers want low ‘between’ spaces. If your home is not open plan, a great way to achieve this is by making sure your spaces have unity in their styling and colour scheme. No one wants to go from a light, freshly painted kitchen to a dark and gloomy living space, so if you are going to paint parts of the home, paint it all so that the rooms flow.
Bathrooms, regardless of their age, need to feel fresh and clean. Clean your tiles, grout, windows, mirrors, and shower screens and consider replacing cracked toilets or toilet seat covers. A great tip to transform a bathroom is to replace any dated, cloudy shower screens, this inexpensive step can make a huge difference. Updating taps and shower heads are also a quick cosmetic change that will transform the feel of the room.
Buyers love good sized bedrooms; focus on the layout and features such as fans, lighting, and storage. Less is best when presenting a room, so ensure that the space is decluttered. You also want to minimise personal items and style simply so that the space feels welcoming and inviting.
Outdoors can be just important as indoors when buying a home. Whether buyers are seeking low maintenance, room for entertaining or space for the kids to play, this area needs to feel as inviting as the inside. This is the perfect opportunity to showcase another living space and is particularly important in homes where the internal living space is small. Section off into specific areasoutdoor dining, cooking, living etc - using furniture and styling. You may also have a small deck off a living room or bedroom; don’t forget about these spaces, by simply adding a chair, side table and plant you are bringing these ‘forgotten’ areas to the buyer’s attention.

GOING WITH THE FLOW
WRITTEN BY ALISON BONE
With the launch of the Flow Hive in 2015, father-son duo, Stuart and Cedar Anderson transformed the world of beekeeping and broke crowdfunding records in the process. Eight years on, they have customers across the globe, including celebs like Chris Hemsworth, Jamie Oliver and David Beckham. Not bad going for a couple of nature loving, backyard beekeepers from the Northern Rivers hinterland.
While honey afficionados may dream of having fresh honey on tap in their garden, for Cedar Anderson and his dad, Stu – hobbyist beekeepers from Newrybar, the creation of the Flow Hive was quite literally a dream come true, albeit a dream that took 10 years of hard work to come to fruition.
Traditionally beekeeping is a messy affair, “Getting the golden nectar has always been quite a task,” says Cedar. “It was crazy to have to crack open the hive, pull it apart, stress out all the bees and spend all day in the shed just to get your honey.” Cedar also felt bad about bees getting crushed, and was sick of getting stung, “I thought there must be a better way.”
Inspired to find a method of honey extraction that was less stressful for bees and beekeepers alike, Cedar and Stu spent nearly a decade working tirelessly in their shed, sketching and discussing ideas. Cedar’s engineering skills allowed him to create working prototypes. Finally, they stumbled upon a system of custom designed frames that allowed them to harvest honey without opening the hive, and with minimal disturbance to the bees. By 2015 patents were in place – now they had to find funding, so they decided to put their invention out to the community through a crowdfunding campaign.
Launching on Indiegogo with a simple video, their goal was to raise $70,000. To say the response was overwhelming
would be quite an understatement. “It went nuts,” says Cedar. “In two hours, we had a million, breaking international crowdfunding records.” By the time the campaign ended eight weeks later they had 12 million US dollars in pre-orders. How
does a Flow Hive work?
The Flow Frames have a plastic foundation with partially-formed cells that can be “opened” with the turn of a specialised key. Bees complete the partially-formed comb, fill the honey cells, and then cap them with a layer of wax. When you want to harvest honey, you insert a Flow Key into the frame and turn it to open the cells, creating channels for the honey to flow downwards to a collection trough, out a tube and into your jar, all while the bees continue their work undisturbed. Transforming the way honey is harvested makes beekeeping more accessible and sustainable than ever before, and much more gentle on the honey bees, who are already facing threats like habitat loss and pesticide use. But it’s as important as ever for would-be beekeepers to take good care of their bees, much as they would with traditional hives. As Cedar sees it, by making the extraction process easier, “the Flow Hive helps people have more time to spend with their bees and to look after the health of the colony.”
Eight years on, Flow now has a global customer base exceeding 100,000, with a notable surge in sales during the COVID-19
lockdowns, as people became increasingly interested in sustainable living practices. “We are so proud to be inspiring a new wave of beekeepers around the world,” says Cedar. Here in the Northern Rivers, you will find Flow Hive honey at venues such as The Farm, Harvest Cafe and Crystalbrook Byron.
As a certified B-Corp, Flow is committed to making a positive impact on pollinator health worldwide, and to inspiring a deeper connection with nature, promoting sustainability, and empowering the next generation to make a positive impact on their communities and the environment. Born from an identified gap in the market for an organic range of products that were both results-driven and backed by science, Mukti’s namesake brand was launched in 2000.

their functions and efficacy on the skin. She uncovered much information on the hidden dangers lurking in beauty products, not to mention the environmental catastrophe, the practice of animal testing, as well as the numerous toxic chemicals in cosmetics that have never been tested of health and safety. Feeling compelled to share what she has learned along the way, she began blogging about health, wellness, and natural beauty in 2010.
The foundation of all Mukti products is a certified organic base, formulated with sustainably sourced, high-potency botanicals and clean actives, with key ingredients verified by clinical data and supported by science.
Mukti Organics Head Quarters relocated to Mullumbimby in 2021. It is a purpose-built facility incorporating R&D, production, dispatch, customer care and The Mukti Beauty Rooms flagship store, employing over 20 local staff.
Mukti is generous of heart donating
to Bob Brown Foundation, Australian Conservation Foundation and Save the Bees as well as numerous local community-based organisations including The Returning, a local Indigenous charity designed to bring all peoples of all ages, races, and places back to country.
To this day, Mukti still oversees the creation of every product and encapsulates the essence and origins of the A (Australian) Beauty movement.
Mukti’s Favourite product: The 2in1 Resurfacing Exfoliant - this gentle 2-part facial scrub is essential for skin health. Spherical melting jojoba esters and micronised bamboo act as a physical exfoliant while fruit enzymes from Caviar, Desert and Rainforest Lime contain natural alpha hydroxy acids (AHA’s) that gently dissolve dead skin cells resurfacing the skin and encouraging collagen production, imparting a fresh and dewy complexion. LETTING INTUITION GUIDE YOU
The first thing you notice when you step into a Studio Eleven Hair and Beauty salon is the calm energy and day spa vibes. This is intentional. Instead, we go out of our way to make sure time inside our salon is comfortable, enjoyable, and memorable.”
An industry expert with over 20 years of hairdressing experience, plus a swathe of business awards under her belt - it’s not only Aleisha's skill and knowledge that has earnt her a loyal following of happy clients, but the commitment to her team. “The Studio Eleven culture is one of fun, laughter, and belief in ourselves. I do believe that investing in my team – ensuring they are trained to the highest standards, providing a calm, happy and motivational space to work in – shows, and flows down to the client.”
As well as her talented team of stylists and cutting technicians, Aleisha is also committed to affordable pricing, extended opening hours to accommodate busy schedules, and a variety of services –including a mobile ‘Luxe Styling Team’ which travels to your venue and provides hair and make-up before your important function.
And now for the full pre-event experience, you can take your bridal party, formal group, friends or family, and head along to Aleisha’s 4th stunning salon – a luxurious modern Mediterranean ‘Blow Dry Bar’ – newly opened in Coolangatta. Complete with fitting rooms, photoshoot backdrops and a cocktail bar, Studio Eleven has raised the bar to a 10/10 when it comes to service and experience.
What’s next for this visionary - whose heart is to simply ‘help people become the best version of themselves’? We think Aleisha’s intuition will guide the way.

DIVE INTO THE VIBRANT UNIVERSE OF LUNAR DISCO
Lunar Disco’s electrifying beats and vibrant disco-pop universe are sure to get you grooving. Discover the inspiration behind the husband-and-wife duo making waves in the music industry.
Kate, we’re so excited to dive into the world of Lunar Disco. Tell us what’s been happening in your vibrant discopop universe?
Thanks for having us! We are great. We are currently in Europe - we’ve just done a gig in St Tropez, and we are heading to Zurich tomorrow for a gig at Hive night club.
Tell us about your upcoming EP, ‘Devil’s Hands’. What inspired this electrifying track and what can listeners expect from it?
Growing up, I was heavily influenced by the surf culture and psychedelic rock era and inspired by artists like Jefferson Airplane and Nancy Sinatra. I’m also a fan of Tarantino films, so they were inspiration too. I wrote ‘Devils Hands’ in London with my friend and producer Paul Rogers. The song captures a snapshot of my life during that period, exploring themes of struggle, vulnerability, escape, and feeling trapped. Nico added some extra magic to the final version. We also created an underground version for the dance floor as Lunar Disco alongside TAYA. The EP also features remixes by Luciano and Audiofly, both legends in the house music genre. In exciting news, ‘Devils Hands (Original Mix)’ has just been selected ESSENTIAL NEW TUNE on BBC radio 1 with Pete Tong. This is a huge achievement because it’s been chosen out of all new releases worldwide.
We’re curious about how Lunar Disco came to be. Tell us the story behind the formation of this dynamic duo?
Nico and I met in Ibiza in 2016 at a villa party over the Summer. Nico (who’s French) came to Australia six months later and asked me to play back-to-back with him at a few gigs he was booked for. We soon realised there was electrifying chemistry between us that was worth pursuing... the rest is history. Lunar Disco was born!
As a married couple and parents, we’re intrigued by how you navigate a successful performing and creative music partnership, while juggling the responsibilities of parenthood?
As parents and entrepreneurs, finding time to be creative can be challenging. During Covid, we had the opportunity to write a series of singles that are more radio friendly, and we’ve been
releasing them slowly on our record label, ‘Suck My Disco,’ over the past year. Despite our busy schedule, we have realised the importance of making time to nurture our creative side.
What exciting projects or plans do you have in store for Lunar Disco?
We have just released on a massive underground record label called Crosstown Rebels, which is huge. The second part of our European tour is taking us everywhere with some major stops in Ibiza (for the great ‘Storytellers’ party amongst others). Then we’ll be back in Australia around October.
You guys are also part owners of the incredible Casa Luna in Byron Bay. What sparked your interest in getting involved with this business venture?
During Covid, we saw the chance to bring music and food to our local community. Nico had a popular event brand in Paris, but Covid prevented him from continuing it. While in Australia, we met a team who shared our passion. When the opportunity came to take over the old “Bolt Hole” and start something new, we jumped at it. That’s how Casa Luna was born.
Once Covid restrictions eased, we found ourselves even busier with new projects, including owning a restaurant called Casa Luna in Byron Bay and a mobile catering business called The Kombi Kollective.
How long have you’ve called this place home? What drew you to this beautiful region?
We decided to move to Byron Bay at the beginning of the Covid pandemic in 2020. We were living in a small apartment in Bondi with our one-year-old daughter. Everything was closed due to the lockdown, including the beaches which was tough. We felt it was the right time to leave the city and fulfill my dream of living in Byron Bay, a place I’ve been visiting since I was 12. Once we made the move, we never regretted it.
Living like a local in Byron Bay, can you let us in on some of your faves?

WHERE YOUR ART IS
WRITTEN BY ANGELA SAURINE
If you’ve pondered painting, felt an urge to sink your hands into a squishy pot of clay or want to delve into the ancient Japanese art of Gyotaku, you’re in luck. It’s never too late to become an artist, and there’s a wide variety of classes across the region to help hone your skills.
Gyotaku Art Classes
Ben Devlin has long been an advocate of the ‘nose to tail’ philosophy – using as many parts of an animal as possible in his cooking to save waste. Now the chef has taken the concept to a whole new level, offering squid ink art classes at his acclaimed restaurant, Pipit, in Pottsville. It was during a COVID-19 lockdown in 2020 that Devlin became interested in Gyotaku, the Japanese method of seafood printmaking traditionally used by fishmongers in the mid-1700s. He began displaying his prints of squid, fish, crabs et al on the walls of the restaurant and selling them to customers before launching instructional classes. Donning gloves Devlin skilfully demonstrates how to remove the squid’s ink sack. He then dabs ink over the subject with cotton wool and covers it with rice paper, rubbing it to create an impressive lifelike image. “It’s time consuming but I find it relaxing,” he says. “It’s a meditative process. I spend a lot of time now looking intently at each product, considering the details, because I’m trying to recreate it on a page.” Classes for four to six people are held on Monday nights, and students can choose the hands-on option and make a print to take home, or book a food and art demo, in which they can sit back and watch Devlin at work and taste dishes showcasing whole-animal cooking. pipitrestaurant.com/artprint
