THE GREEN ISLAND IN THE SKY

Tamborine Mountain offers an escape filled with winding roads, exceptional dining, wine-tasting, rainforests and breathtaking views. And it’s just one hour from the coast. We head to the hills for an unforgettable experience.

FEATURE 8

Mount Tamborine has undergone something of a transformation lately –some self-imposed, some nature-induced. Over the past few years, there’s been storms, extended road closures and mudslides, not to mention the isolating effects of Covid - yet amidst these hardships and challenges, a lush paradise has risen, phoenix-like, to emerge bigger and better than ever.

Often referred to as the ‘green island in the sky,’ this village is much more than just a smattering of buildings. There are art galleries, award-winning restaurants, markets, wineries, breathtaking nature walks amongst tropical rainforests, cute, cosy cottages with roaring fires and, of course, lots of fudge. With a population of just over 8,500 living within its 28 square kilometres, you’re spoilt for food, wine, art and entertainment.

Mount Tamborine is an easy way to spend the day, or ideally, stay the night. Head to Gallery Walk (there’s council parking at the western end) and make your way past cuckoo clock shops and fudge emporia towards the northern end of the street. Step across a little wooden bridge to be transported to the Champs Elysée via Tamborine’s newest patisserie –Franquette. Translated as ‘without any fuss,’ Franquette manages to create a stir with their perfectly baked breads, croissants and delicious pastries. Enjoy outside on the deck under chic, green and white striped awnings.

The combination of international influences on the mountain top has resulted in a unique offering of art, craft, artisan food, gifts and collectible stores. On the eastern side, there’s Granny Mac’s Fudge Store and Chocolates on Gallery Walk, and the nostalgia-inducing Bygone Days and Vintage Crafts. But if you make your way to the Main Street, you’ll discover the new faces of the mountain, transforming it from cutesy village to a food and cultural destination that’s been named by travel bible, The Lonely Planet, as one of the top 10 regions in the world.

While the mountain has long been known for its mix of international cuisines – there’s Dutch, Belgian, Italian, Polish and Mexican to name just a few – a new breed of local chefs is passionately reviving the foodie scene. One such chef and cafe owner is Brenda Fawdon, who, alongside her business partners, husband and wife team Sonia Drexler and Andrew Moir (who also runs the pottery school and ceramic school next door), launched Picnic Real Food Bar. Previous owners of Mondo - the first certified organic restaurant in Australia - they’ve now brought their collective talents to Main Street. The menu is extensive and the restaurant itself has an urban

vibe - all black steel and timber, the earthy theme echoes the connection the team has with its surroundings.

“We knew that there was a market here for organic food done well,” says Brenda. Despite opening in Covid and having limited staff, the restaurant is an outstanding success, thanks to Brenda’s entrepreneurial vision and her intuitive way with ingredients. “We’ve always been produce-driven. Before we opened Picnic, Sonia and I were visiting local farmers, covering some 800 kilometres every week, buying up their produce to sell at markets.”

In 2019, they turned their attention to Mt Tamborine. There, behind 45 metres of privet hedge, they discovered the perfect spot for their new venture. “We’re 500 metres above sea level, and the volcanic soil makes it the ideal ground for growing fruit and vegetables. I love that most of our ingredients are locally grown.” But it’s not just food that Brenda finds inspiring. “My legacy is to create something bigger than I am and that’s what my goal is here.”

To walk off our lunch, we head to Tamborine National Park, to follow the 1.1km, grade 3 Curtis Falls track through the cool forest to the spectacular Curtis Falls, then continue on to the Lower Creek Circuit for the 2km return. Eager to rest, we make for Robert Sowter Park to gape at the magnificent sunset views and parasailers.

We have booked to stay the night at Thunderbird Park, where you can choose from private lodges, creekside cabins, camping, and the wonderful glamping sites. Having recently undergone an expensive and intensive transformation, the 112 hectares provides accommodation to suit all requirements. Our choice were the brand-new Vistas, placed high on the side of the mountain with private balconies overlooking the creek. The location, especially the open air outdoor shower, gives you a luxurious feeling of freedom, while connecting you to Mother Nature.

For another awe-inspiring view, head next door to the magical 30 acres of rainforest visible from the Skywalk, it’s ideal for the whole family.

Dinner is just a short walk down the hill to the Rainforest Café. Cosy, spacious and decorated with canvases from local artists, you can dine on a perfect blend of Mediterranean and Australian meals. A buffet breakfast is also served in the Rainforest Café and there’s a kiosk next door for food and snacks throughout the day.

Thunderbird Park has been a mainstay on the mountain due to its ability to deliver fun for all ages. Laser skirmish is perfect for those five years and older who want to pit their wits against nature, alert to every crunch of leaves and scurrying animal. For younger kids, Dig It is ideal for the budding builder. There are excavators and tractors to dig up dirt and swinging balls to knock down.

Time to slow down and purchase some local produce from the farm stalls as you wind your way to Tamborine Mountain Coffee Plantation. Their honey-roasted coffee is grown, roasted and blended on the mountain. Tour the grounds (Thursdays and Saturdays at 12pm) and see the cherry blossoms in bloom on their 600-plus coffee trees, before enjoying a feast in the beautiful gardens of their restaurant.

In keeping with Tamborine's international flavour, El Burro Cantina Mexican Restaurant on Main Western Road brings the heat and sombreros - and spectacular sunsets - to a family-friendly dining experience. The Chilli Bowl is the star, especially when washed down with lashings of zesty guacamole and Corona.

And you can’t leave without taking home local wine. The widely awarded, Witches Falls winery is the perfect place to while away the afternoon hours. There is an outdoor area for children to play, while you visit the cellar door. Sunset Sips are held until 7pm every Friday and Saturday night and paired with cheese. It’s the perfect way to end a perfect trip on the island, high in the sky.

MAKING A SPLASH

We’ve seen sportspeople turn to music, but how many musicians have turned to sports? And the Olympics, no less? We chart local boy Cody Simpson’s rise to world domination.

FEATURE 12
Getty Images

The last place anyone anticipated Simpson to emerge from was a local pool. Yet, it makes sense that he has returned to his waterbased roots. His mother Angie raced for Australia at the Pan Pacific Games in 1987, and his father Brad, swam for Australia at the Commonwealth Games in 1994. Cody’s early skills were evident in 2009, when he scored two gold medals at the Queensland swimming championships.

His swimming future was “sidetracked” when, after asking for, and receiving a guitar for his seventh birthday, he uploaded some of his music to YouTube. Like a scene from a Hollywood movie, a star was born. Grammy-nominated record producer Shawn Campbell noticed the evident talent of the young Simpson, and lured the family to L.A. The move paid off almost immediately, when Justin Bieber’s manager secured Simpson as a client.

Known for his albums, Coast to Coast and Preview to Paradise, the singer appeared to have the musical world at his feet. Then he went stratospheric. Not just due to his music, but for his private life. His year-long relationship with songstress Miley Cyrus appeared, on social media at least, to be filled with sun, fun and music. They parted amicably, with Miley sharing publicly that “It was… a mutual decision… we were sort of going in different directions in our life.”

Different directions indeed. Rather than releasing more music, Cody returned to his family home on the coast with a new number one in mind: to win gold in the water.

“When I decided to come back (to the pool), Mum was one of the only people to say, ‘are you sure you want to do that, do you understand the work it entails?’,” he recalls. Resolute, Simpson is certainly putting in the early starts and the long hours. “I’ve never worked this hard – this consistently – in my life for anything,” the 27-year-old has said. His schedule includes 15 workouts a week, for an hour to two hours at a time. Bookmarked by gym and spin-bike sessions, there’s not much time for stage appearances. He says that even his Broadway stint (in the musical Anastasia) in 2018 was less demanding physically. He has said that his musical career has helped him: consistent, daily, hard work equals improvement, growth and, ultimately, success.

Soon after his return Down Under, Simpson qualified for the Tokyo Olympic trials and landed a place on the 2022 Commonwealth Games team, where he won a gold and silver medal for the men’s 4x100m freestyle and 4x100m medley relay heats. And just last December, he shaved 0.11 seconds off his personal best, coming first in the 100m butterfly at the 2023 Queensland Championships. Next stop: Paris Olympics.

He says one of the secrets of his success is visualisation: “As a young competitive swimmer, I’d visualise my races, the times I wanted to do and the outcomes I desired…” His Audible Original podcast, Sleep Sound with Cody Simpson allows his 5.2 million Instagram followers and 1.1 million YouTube fans to visualise success too. “This year, I’ve undertaken a daily meditation, and it’s allowed me to get even better at that visual imagery.”

Simpson’s girlfriend, fellow swimmer and 2024’s Young Australian of the Year, Emma McKeon shares his vision. McKeon became the first woman and second person to win seven medals in a single Olympics in the last Tokyo Games. Now regarded as Australia’s hottest sporting couple, their relationship was a “slow burn” - their friendship forged in the pool transitioned to a romantic, and it seems, a happily successful, partnership. “We've got the same schedule, we're tired at the same times, hungry at the same times, all that kind of stuff, so it makes living very easy," says Emma. McKeon will compete at the Paris Games in July as a five-time Olympic gold medallist, having won a gold medal in Rio in 2016 and four gold medals in Tokyo in 2021. Simpson is Emma’s loudest supporter, sharing his pride after her performance at the 2023 Queensland Swimming Championships: "This woman never ceases to inspire me just simply being the human being she is.

Humble, kind, and full of dreams," he writes proudly on his socials. "Emma is a huge part of my life and has been such a positive influence on me in terms of keeping me grounded since we met. She is a really calming presence, she has really helped me, and she just impresses me so much, she is such a wonderful person."

Simpson is grateful for the past few years, saying that the “experience has been transformative. Swimming has taught me I have an intensity of discipline that I didn’t have before, and I’m really excited to see how that works in other fields. I’m excited to take it into my music or into other things I want to do in the future.”

One new avenue is as a children’s author. His new book, The Sea in Me (Penguin) is a story of finding the calm and quiet amid the bustle and noise of everyday life. The tale promotes mindfulness and the importance of finding your calm - by quieting the noise of the world by swimming underwater with nature.

He credits his swim mentor, Australian swimming champion Ian Thorpe for his continual interest in music and areas other than swimming. “Ian Thorpe is always telling me if you stop playing music, I will stop mentoring you in the sport, you need to have something to go to in life,” he said.

GOLDEN DREAMS

I’m not really sure what to expect when I head to visit skate and BMX training academy Level Up, set inconspicuously off a side street within Currumbin Valley’s industrial estate. I’m also not certain what I’m looking for, until I see it - the massive 12 ft vert ramp out front is a giveaway. So too, as I pull in, is the familiar whoosh and click clack emerging from the large warehouse space.

FEATURE 14
Arisa Trew

Inside is an indoor skatepark dreams are made of… I stand for moment in awe, bodies and wheels fly in the air, spinning and twisting. It’s like watching the fluidity and rhythm of professional ice skaters in a rink, only these kids are on jumps and ramps – some 13.5 feet high.

This is where today and tomorrow’s world champions study and train. It’s not just fun and games - there’re three hours of morning ‘school’ classes to attend, followed by four hours of solid training. It’s hardcore and, by the look on their faces, they love it.

Level Up is the vison of pro skateboarder Trev Ward, come to life. Ward had been living in the US for eight years and ranked top 5 in the world for five years running. On his return to Australia in 2007, he’d been thinking about how to give better opportunities to the next generation of

Aussie skaters, so he started by running local lessons for kids at skateparks in Cabarita and Murwillumbah. It grew from there, and eventually Ward had 35 coaches around Australia teaching hungry and talented youngsters all the tricks of the trade.

Ward recognised that a lot of these kids weren’t fitting into the schooling system, nor was there a place for those with passion and potential to go to train. “School isn’t for everyone” he says. “It can be a struggle for some to sit in classes for 6 hours. Not all kids learn that way.” He saw that there were kids with real talent, but they needed more than a few afternoons a week at a local skate park to become X Games or Olympic level competitors. The potential was there, and Ward had an idea to fill the gap. A training academy, in a safe and controlled environment, that would combine schooling with the kind

of training needed to transform these talented kids into the sporting heroes of tomorrow.

Level Up Academy was born in 2019 and, under Ward’s guidance, has grown to a team of 10 coaches, four teachers and 40 happy kids from the grades three to 12. Here school is exciting and, if they work hard, they get to play harder. “It’s funny,” says Ward, “the kids aren’t actually missing out on any of the regular curriculum here. If you take away the assemblies, the casual classes and the endless interruptions, kids are pretty much getting three hours (at most) of solid class time per day in a regular school.”

Tyler Mattiazzi is at the helm of the school program, and along with three others, all are qualified senior teachers. “There’s no egos here,” says Mattiazzi. “At the end of the day, it’s all about the kids. We catch

From left: Jada Ward, 15, Zen Dickson, 14, Arisa Trew, 13, Ash Wilcomes, 16, Asher Watt, 11, Jake Thatcher, 14 and Kalani Salussolia, 14 at Level Up Academy and Training Facility. Image credit: Nigel Hallett

them up when they’re travelling and do whatever they need to get them over the line.”

The kids want to learn too. It’s strict - no phones or social media, if you’re not consistent with grades, you don’t train, if you bully, you’re out first go - but they aren’t forced, they love it and they excel academically and socially, as well as in the sport. “The kids have all exceeded my expectations,” adds Ward. “They work so hard and never say no to challenges. We don’t push, it’s driven 100% by them. So much so, they hate the holidays,” he laughs. “They come here anyway!”

This place works, and it’s producing a level of talent in Australia that has never been seen before in the teen age bracket. Kids like world champion Arisa Trew who, at 14, has been under Ward’s guidance since she was a ten year old coming for after school lessons. She wasn’t the phenomenon she is now, but Ward could see something magical and encouraged her parents to get their heads around switching her from high school to his training program. Understandably, they weren’t sure. He asked them to just give him one year… Within 6 months she was ranked 3rd in the world.

Trew has now won every comp in Australia and has earned a name for herself in the US and around the globe for becoming, at just 13 years old, the first woman ever to perform a 720 rotation during Tony

Hawk's Vert Alert event, held in Salt Lake City in 2023. Made even cooler because Hawk (who invented the trick) was there to witness her success. A few months later she competed at the renowned X Games and became the first female in X Games history to win the Vert and Park double, taking home two gold medals and setting her on course for her most recent achievement - becoming the sole Australian to be honoured at World Sports’ biggest awards gala, the Laureus Awards in Madrid. Where, in April of this year, standing beside Novak Djokovic and Aitana Bonmatí, the Gold Coast teen was named 2024’s Action Sportsperson of the year.

“She’s a freak” says Ward. “Arisa is doing things I’ve never seen before. She has phenomenal talent, but she’s also down to earth and so hard working. This kid will fly in at 5am from competing around the world, and she’ll come to school.”

Testament to Ward’s core ethos – that it’s not just being a great athlete, it’s about being a great human. “We champion hard work, and old school manners and respect. Kindness matters, it’s what holds up society.”

As if on cue, Arisa arrives for training. She gives me a big bubbly smile and shakes my hand before waiting for Trev and I to finish up. She’s just one of the kids here achieving amazing things under Trev’s guidance. “My greatest passion is the kids and youth,” he sums up. “It’s about

encouragement. Parents don’t need to put a crazy amount of pressure on a kid to be something, just find their passion. I really believe in the power of having a mentor. It’s not about me coaching them, it’s about me putting in place the right people and the right environment.”

Right environment indeed. These local kids are more than flourishing, they’re doing Australia proud. As I leave, I have one question for Arisa as she climbs the 12 ft vert outside. “What’s your next dream?” Her eyes light up, “I really want to go to the Olympics,” she says, before she takes off to fly.

RESCUING AND REHABILITATING

OUR PRECIOUS GOLD COAST WILDLIFE

Our beautiful Gold Coast is a hotspot for biodiversity, with beaches, valleys, and mountains in the hinterland creating habitats where so many different species can thrive. We know that human populations are growing and encroaching on wild spaces, and these animals are forced to adapt faster than evolution can keep up with. Australia has 86 animal species that are considered critically endangered, and places like Currumbin Wildlife Hospital are crucial for rescuing and rehabilitating wildlife and getting them back into their ancestral homes.

Currumbin Wildlife Hospital is one of the busiest wildlife hospitals in the entire world. In 2021, the hospital reached a peak of 14,473 patients admitted. Numbers have decreased slightly in the past few years, thanks largely to an education campaign with local vet clinics to empower and enable their staff to handle the simpler wildlife cases. In turn, this has allowed the hospital team to focus on the more difficult cases, and work with key applied research projects such as the Koala Chlamydia Vaccine Program.

This approach was somewhat effective for most of the year, but sadly the overwhelming effect of the lorikeet paralysis syndrome and violent Christmas storms last summer saw the busiest two months ever recorded in hospital history. These numbers are simply not sustainable for the current physical hospital building, the hospital team, and our native wildlife.

It is estimated that the tourism value of koalas alone is $1.1 billion. Without intervention, koalas could be extinct across large areas of eastern Australia by 2050. Each koala requires up to 1,000 gum trees per year in food, so you can imagine the size of the eucalypt forests needed to sustain this iconic animal both in the wild and at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary.

Dr Michael Pyne OAM, Senior Veterinarian and Head of Research at the hospital, has declared that “the future of many native species is at risk, so it’s more important than ever to focus on reducing wildlife hospital admissions. This can only be done through cutting edge research and working with people who share our sense of urgency for protecting wildlife.”

To continue its vital work, the hospital needs to expand into critical research projects and deliver vital training programs to our community on how to protect native wildlife. Simply put, the physical campus needs to grow bigger to accommodate more space for training facilities, molecular laboratories, and cutting-edge medical research. This doesn’t happen without the support of hundreds of volunteers, vets, nurses, researchers, carers, and generous donors.

Perhaps our children and grandchildren will one day live in a world where koalas are no longer endangered, and the list of threatened species is decreasing rather than increasing. Until that time comes, the Currumbin Wildlife Hospital urgently needs our support.

If you would like to volunteer your time or invest in saving our native wildlife, head to currumbinsanctuary.com.au/wildlife-hospital

SKATER’S PARADISE

On the Gold Coast, board riders aren’t just found in the surf. Across the city, there are a growing number of excellent skate parks that offer hours of fun in the sun.

DISCOVER 20
Tugun

The fall is definitely not as soft - but the thrill of skateboarding is just as good as a surf. While both need coordination, a healthy dose of adrenalin and the balance of a cat, the land-based option is free from the constraints of winds, tides and swell.

The Gold Coast’s plethora of sophisticated skate parks are already reaping rewards - they’ve produced the homegrown next gen of talent in the likes of Arisa Trew and Chloe Covell.

So, if you’re ready to follow in their wheel-prints, then these are the best spots on the Gold Coast to polish your 720s, your kickflips and your half cabs.

Tugun Skatepark | Betty Diamond Park

Dramatically placed under the Coolangatta Airport’s flightpath, the low-flying jets are the perfect backdrop for pulling off (and filming) edgy skate tricks.

The Tugun Skatepark was one of the first on the Gold Coast, starting with a half pipe in the 80s. After a major extension in 2015, the park now has a street section with plenty of edges and rails, and there’s a smooth pool bowl (with a drop in not for the faint hearted) as well as the older section of pipes. It is very open and can cop some serious winds though, so pack a parker.

There is plenty of parking, shelters and benches, bubblers and public toilets, and it is dog friendly (on a lead around the skate park).

Elanora Skatepark | Elanora Oval

The passion project of local skateboarder Saul Bell, the Elanora Skatepark was once the only open full pipe in Australia. Today, the park attracts world champion skateboarders (including Arisa Trew) and events like Bowlzilla Gold Coast (the first National Park Skating competition in Australia).

The iconic park has metal coping on one side of its 8-foot bowland on the other side of the pipe is a 12-foot vertical drop in.

Pizzey Park Skatepark | Miami

Surrounded by trees and with water glimpses, Pizzey Park is not only scenic - it is the largest skatepark in Australia. It has a huge footprint - there’s 2,600 sq. m of skateable area that boasts street style obstacles like rails, hubbas and kickers. There’s even an iconic skateable sign - the golden letters spelling out “Pizzey” is not one to miss. To boot, the park also has several bowls of various sizes. There is something for all skaters, from beginners just learning the basics to the advanced looking for a new challenge.

It hosts major competitions and events and has been used for Olympic-level training - there’s even a dedicated space for temporary grandstands to be erected. Surrounding the park are plenty of benches, shelters and shaded areas, as well as bubblers.

Nerang Skatepark | Nerang Connection Road

The highlight of the Nerang Skatepark is the long, snaking bowl that befits this open-flow concrete park. It boasts steel coping for a great slide and street skate features include banks, ledges and rails. There is plenty to keep skaters of any level amused for hours and the tall gum trees that stand guard offer lots of shade. The on-site barbecues, public toilets, playground and proximity to the shops mean families can make a day of it.

Jacobs Well Skatepark | Jacobs Well Tourist Park

One of the newer kids on the block is Jacobs Well Skatepark - where it lacks in size, it makes up with a super smooth and fast concrete surface. Beginners and pros alike will find features that suit - here, there’s a bowl, spine, ramps and a street section with rails and ledges. Pack your basketball too - there’s a neat little half court for when you need to give your legs a break.

Coomera Skatepark | Dreamworld Parkway

This relative newcomer has lots of tricks up its sleeve - the skate bowl has slippery pool tiles and a drainage gap to navigate, as well as a hump in the middle that can trip up the unsuspecting. To really make things complicated, a quarter ramp offers another challenge. The smooth concrete offers a fast ride, and there are plenty of obstacles to test the skills of skaters and strategically placed humps mean the momentum keeps goinghopefully in the right direction.

PAY TO PLAY

Level Up | 8 Coghill Drive, Currumbin Waters

If you’re building up the nerve to give skateboarding a go - or you’re seasoned but lack style - Level Up offers lessons and school holiday workshops, as well as pay-to-play sessions in their indoor skate park and massive outdoor vert. There’s a foam pit to practice tricks - where skaters can gain skill but not the bruises and scabs. Book online during the public open sessions to avoid missing out and note that they don’t hire equipment (but there is an onsite shop that stocks plenty of boards and safety gear). Bikes, scooters and skates all welcome. levelupskatepark.shop

VIEW FOR DAYS

Winter heralds cooler temperatures and clear air. With humidity but a memory, mid-year is the perfect time to explore the Gold Coast’s best trails with a view.

Twin Falls, Springbrook

Time: 1.5 hours | Distance: 4km loop | Difficulty: Grade 3

If you’re trying to rope in reluctant friends or entice younger children to fall in love with hiking, then Twin Falls in Springbrook National Park is the perfect bait. It starts at Canyon Lookout, which offers dramatic views over the waterfall and the Gold Coast skyline in the centre, flanked by lush ancient rainforest dipping into a valley far below.

Best walk anti-clockwise, take the path to the right which soon takes you over the top of a creek to stand on top of Twin Falls waterfall and watch it crash into the pool far below. The track

then winds through deep crevices before leading to the pool itself. Here, walkers are able to pass behind the first of two waterfalls on this track - it’s a great spot to stop for a snack and to admire the rainbows that form in the mist when the sun hits just so.

From here, take the track that leads through a mini canyon before the second waterfall appears. Be prepared to get a bit wet - the path that passes behind the waterfall is much closer that the first. Through the falling spray, the Gold Coast skyscrapers and ocean skirt glitters on the horizon.

To complete the loop, the path becomes steep and the last gem is a small footbridge that passes over a small rockpool, the source of the second waterfall.

DISCOVER 24
Twin Falls, Springbrook

Caves Track, Lamington National Park

Time: 2 hours | Distance: 7km loop

Difficulty: Grade 4

Starting at the iconic Binna Burra lower day use area, the Caves Track not only offers views - but an understanding in how Traditional Owners used this area pre-settlement. The track starts off fairly flat in sparse eucalypt forest - keep an eye to the sky for sleepy koalas. Soon it opens into Kweebani Cave - a gaping space with an incredible view that was favoured by the Yugambeh people as a place to gather to cook and eat.

From here, the concrete path weaves through narrow archways of other caves before (after turning a tight corner) a breath-taking view across the Darlington Range and over Coomera Valley, where eagles soar below. Take a seat on the bench, or the rocks, to soak it all in over a sandwich.

The end of the track involves a slog up the narrow road back to the Visitor Centre (which offers excellent resources on local wildlife and track maps for sale) - beware close-passing traffic.

Ocean View Track, Burleigh Headland

Time: 45 mins | Distance: 1.2km loop

Difficulty: Grade 3

Sacred to the Yugambeh and Kombumerri people of the Gold Coast, the Burleigh Headland starts on the northern side of the iconic Tallebudgera Creek. The footpath follows the creek before taking a steep turn left up into the rainforest. Here, there are hanging vines and eucalypt trees home to koalas, while brush turkeys, water dragons and blue tongued lizards are often spied on the track itself.

There’s one last steep push up to Tumgum Lookout, where the viewing platform is wide enough to take a break with other groups and is lined with benches for sitting. Heading north, the path then winds before it dips back into the rainforest, leading to a smaller lookout on the northern side of the headland that gives a bird’s-eye view over Burleigh Heads up to the sparkling towers of Surfers Paradise. On a clear day, it’s possible to spot South Stradbroke Island.

The lower part of the track hugs the shoreline and offers an excellent vantage spot for watching surfers weave their magic on the waves. Skirting around the bottom of Burleigh Headland, the last portion of the track weaves past the creek mouth and back onto Talle Creek. Reward yourself with a swim - or a coffee and pastry from Custard Canteen.

Bally Mountain, Bally Mountain

Conservation Area

Time: 3-4 hours | Distance: 6km out and back

Difficulty: Grade 4

This track offers views - and adventure in spades. Starting from the end of Bonogin Road, the track soon serves up a creek crossing. There is a challenging push up to Little Bally Peak, with some scrambly rock. But the views here are stunning and there’s plenty of opportunity to soak it in with the ridge traverse to Bally Mountain itself. The lush valley dips and peaks all the way to the ocean - it is possible to see all the way from Coolangatta up to Surfers Paradise, with the green mound of Burleigh Headland breaking up the tall buildings.

Wear sturdy shoes and beware slippery mud and rocks early in the morning or after rain. This track makes you work - but it’s worth it.

The Village Markets

Gold Coast institution, The Village Markets sadly announced their closure this year after 16 successful years of trading. Super duo Marissa Bowden and Sarah Schoeller founded the event in 2008 - which had grown into a collaborative community of small businesses, designers, artists, creative, foodies, musicians, culture seekers, sustainable shoppers and lovers of good vibes; and provided a launch platform for hundreds of local brands, including labels like Love St, Nine Lives Bazaar and Peony Swimwear and musicians like Ziggy Alberts. Whilst a blow for all of us who have loved this iconic market, happily the powerhouse team will continue by hosting pop up events at Robina Town Centre as well as Rack Sales around the gold Coast.

RIVIERA’S MAJESTIC NEW 6800 SPORT YACHT IS A WORK OF ART

Dripping in majesty, Riviera’s new flagship Sport Yacht, the 6800, is more artwork than engineering; though it’s certainly that too, and of the highest degree.

At 22.18 metres, with room for eight people, plus crew, the motor yacht is the ultimate blue water entertainer with two 1000 horsepower Volvo Penta engines to tame the high seas.

With a plush guest lounge that extends across the width of the aft deck, cocktails at sunset with family and friends is a given; while snorkelling, diving, paddleboarding and fishing enthusiasts are well catered for with the ample water sports equipment storage of the tender garage.

There’s also the option of a three stateroom layout where the starboard guest cabin is replaced by a lower lounge with an LED TV: a perfect media room to entertain children or use as a snug reading space.

The full beam master suite with penthouse style ensuite is palatial, to say the least.

The 6800 Sport Yacht had her world premiere at the prestigious Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show on the Gold Coast in May, Australia’s biggest marine exhibition, where she was arguably the event’s number one drawcard.

“To be successful on the highly competitive global stage of luxury boat building, you must have an absolute commitment to design, innovation, quality and owner care,” Riviera owner and chairman, Rodney Longhurst says.

“That’s what our amazing team in Australia and the United States do every day, creating truly world class luxury motor yachts.

“This new 6800 Sport Yacht is our ultimate Sport Yacht.

“With a choice of three or four staterooms and three bathrooms, a crew cabin or utility room, a full height walk through engine room, huge entertaining and living spaces, an all weather aft deck, expansive sun loving forward deck, and an impressive tender garage devoted to water sports, it is one magnificent motor yacht.”

Gold Coast based Riviera is now the most prolific boat builder in the southern hemisphere, having just delivered its historic

six thousandth motor yacht, an exquisite 5400 Sport Yacht Platinum Edition.

To celebrate the milestone, all 950 of Riviera’s team members formed a long ‘guard of honour’ for the motor yacht as it was presented to its new owner, the Past Commodore of the Royal Motor Club in Sydney, Peter Haig.

“Our six thousandth motor yacht - what an incredible achievement for the thousands of craftspeople who have built Riviera yachts over the past 44 years,” Longhurst smiles.

“This historic milestone reinforces Riviera’s reputation as one of the most sought after motor yachts in the world.

“I couldn’t be more proud of our team, and I am grateful to all the Riviera owners around the world who not only enjoy our motor yachts themselves but share this wonderful experience with their family and friends.”

Riviera was founded in Sydney in 1980 before moving to Labrador on the Gold Coast in 1981, building just eight yachts in that first full year.

HATS OFF TO THE CHEF

With fresh ingredients grown locally and bursting with seasonal goodness, is it any wonder that the Gold Coast is home to twenty-one hatted restaurants? We take a place at the table of some of our favourites.

DINE 30
The North Room - Image credit Kirra Smith Photography

The North Room

"I never want anyone to leave hungry or thirsty," says The North Room’s owner Shannon Stewart. This devotion to food and customers is the secret behind one of the region’s most popular, and respected, hatted restaurants. Seating just twenty people behind the unassuming façade on the Gold Coast Highway, Shannon and husband, chef Tim, served up the most memorable meal this reviewer has enjoyed.

My French doesn't extend to knowing what the plural of ‘amuse bouche’ is, thankfully, the menu gets around this by listing 'Snacks' atop the set menu list. There’s not enough space to list in detail the contents of these delights; nor was there room on the table for each pair of delectable morsels to have their own plate. The House Cured Lamb Ham on Fig was my pick of the six delicately assembled bites served on the locally made plates, although the Smokey Slow Roast Beetroot with Macadamia Puree and Native Dukkah elbowed its way to a mention.

Locals are invested in the offerings, campaigning for the return of its famous cheese toastie, and repeatedly return for the modern, seasonal fare on a regularly changing menu. Servings are shared, adding to the intimacy of the experience. Our attentive waiter replaced our finger-wiped-clean plates from the Mud Crab on Bone Marrow Crumpet with an incredible Slow Cooked Pork Jowl. We distributed the portions messily, before slicing through the persimmon and tomatillo that covered the succulent slow-roasted meat. Move over pork belly, there's a finer, juicier, richer cut in town. The fat from the jowl isn't there - it pops up later in the salted caramel petit fours. Australiana is represented beautifully by the tender Kangaroo Fillet, Mushroom, Artichoke and Muntries (local bush berries) and in the wine list of solid, but not over-pricey Antipodean’s, alongside a handful of Super Tuscans and a 2013 Chateau Neuf du Pape.

Despite no room for pudding, we weren't going home without a sweet kiss - which came in the form of two sugary bites - the aforementioned pork fat slow-suck caramel - and a macron to die for. Our ‘bouche’ was well and truly amused. Mermaid Beach | thenorthroom.com.au

If you love good food served with a delicious slice of the Gold Coast skyline, then you’re in for a treat at Rick Shores. Adored by serious foodies and local and international celebrities alike, people flock to this beachfront establishment clamouring for their famous Moreton Bay Bug rolls. Chef James Brady says that it’s a combination of ingredients which make Rick Shores so special: the food and the location. “Very early on we realised we had to be better than the view,” he says. “We want the food to be the focus and be known for our menu, not just the skyline. It’s a challenge I accept every day and relish it.” Brady took over the Rick Shores kitchen seven years ago and he, and his long-term team have created a menu, and prep kitchen, that’s become legendary and dedicated to local, seasonal dishes.

“I feel very strongly about producing everything ourselves and having its own flavour profile, so you don’t dilute the restaurant’s food focus.”

He also uses berries, leaves and flowers in the menu, “Quite often every part of the plant is usable, and we utilise them in our vinaigrette and fermentations.”

Brady recommends his favourite dish: the Roasted Duck and Charred Roti. “We’ve put a lot of effort into refining that dish, making the paste, sourcing the duck, air drying the duck crown for five days until it’s crispy, and using flavoursome lychees. It’s a winter warmer, but it’s just as delicious in the summer. The roti bread is a labour of love and is cooked over coals for smokiness. The two together are my favourite to produce and eat.”

Despite the accolades and consistently filled restaurant, Brady is not one to rest on his laurels. “We have plans for another restaurant later this year, so watch this space!”

kōst

One of the new kids on the hatted list, kōst showcases the best in seasonal and coastal ingredients. It’s a trip to the Mediterranean, all rendered walls and ceilings, with beautiful brass and gold finishes, arched entries and windows to transport you to a European summer. The menu is restrained with a less-is-more approach, and half of the menu is dedicated to ‘over embers,’ using charcoal as a heating base, and ironbark to flavour. Their beverage programme gives a nod to some of the best coastal wine regions and resort-driven cocktails.

“Our kōst ceviche is our signature Hamachi Kingfish, with our mandarinforward 72-hour citrus dressing,” says director Dave Galvin (who also oversaw the recently-opened Kirra Hotel). Indulge in the ‘over embers’ section, which showcases the Rangers Valley Wagyu Rump Cap and Wood-fired Chicken. Finish with the kōst Hazelnut Rocher, their very own version of the Ferrero Rocher.

Palette at HOTA

Palette’s Executive Chef, Dayan Hartill-Law, gave himself a brief - to pair the restaurant’s new menu with the recently opened Renaissance exhibition. “We’re privileged to have such iconic imagery to work with, but they are big shoes to fill.” Hartill-Law took his assignment seriously and studied the Renaissance period from an art and culinary perspective. “We were able to work with amazing suppliers to inject ancient Australian flavours into our dishes,” he says. And the menu is a work of art.

From the starters, a duck liver mousse cannoli dipped in Davison and Kakadu plum powder, and a deboned chicken wing brined in vinegar and spiced with a collection of spices adapted from Chef Scappi's original recipe from the 1500's, to the Kangaroo Grass Flour Corzetti, which is perfectly complemented by the native Australian herbs, lending it an unusual spicy crunch. Each dish was paired with an amazing Australian wine, reflective of the land and flavours of the dishes presented.

In keeping with the Renaissance era, we shared plates, as was commonly done during this time – it lends itself well to cohesiveness and conversation. Although we became quite vocal over who was entitled to the final piece of the signature dessert –the 'Tuscan Marble', featuring Little Cocoa chocolate with flavours of fig, in a cheeky nod to the carefully placed fig leaves on iconic Italian sculptures.

Fashion for Everyday

Bymaay is a cool brand who have their marketing down pat because they first came to our attention via Instagram. Their funky styles of ‘everyday wearables’ may have drawn us in, but it’s their company ethos and vision to provide unparalleled value that we truly admire. “Bymaay is dedicated to revolutionising fashion with environmentally friendly and fashionable accessories, embodying a philosophy that celebrates functional, purposeful pieces for everyday life,” says founder Mia Plako. Highest quality materials, rigorous quality control and an inclusive range of styles and colours (did we mention the 12-month warranty) have taken this local brand from the GC to the world. Ps. We love the cool Aly cross body range. Available in various fashion forward colourways and made with recycled materials. Includes a cute and functional removable coin purse (think easy access to keys, lip gloss and spare change!) bymaay.com

Essential Accessories for Modern Women

Okay, not technically a Gold Coast brand but, only a little further up the highway is the birthplace of cult label Louenhide - a Brisbane based fashion accessories brand, that was established by two long term friends, Heidi Bailey and Lou Kendall in 2006. After identifying a gap in the market for quality bags and accessories at reasonable prices, the friends set out to create accessories that would help inspire women to feel organised, confident and ready for the day. Although they’ve been in the industry a long time, we love these gals for continuing to recognise everyday women (and our needs) in their vision of creating ‘beautiful and functional handbags - that don’t break the bank - for modern women seeking distinctive style’. Hands up to that. Understanding that ‘a trusted handbag or crossbody bag is an essential accessory in every woman’s wardrobe’, Lou and Heidi have created a range of both classic and statement styles in bold colours, animal prints and neutral tones; and it’s this authentic accessibility for

all, that had cemented them as a favoured accessories brand the world over. Their transparent, genuine and long-term approach to sustainability is also a huge tick for consumers who want to invest in brands committed to making a positive change for the planet. Sold in 1000+ retailers globally, in-store and online, you’ve probably got a Louenhide bag in your wardrobe right now. louenhide.com.au

CULTURE THREADS

From punk music and safety pins to peace protests and bohemian skirts, some of our most iconic fashion moments come from cultural movements. On the Gold Coast, there is nothing more iconic than board riding – whether on a surfboard or a skateboard – and the streetwear that goes with it is a growing trend.

LIFESTYLE 42

Taking his first breaths in Hawaii, growing up as a grommet on the GC and then working in a Californian surf shop for almost a decade, Darwin Brooks explains in his hybrid Australian-American accent that board riding is in his blood. When he was younger, a surf shop in Surfers Paradise - where tanned surfers with sunbleached hair would crowd around in-store TVs to watch the latest surf videos before heading out into local breaks to give each other grief - planted the seed of having his own store. But it wasn’t until he was in his late 40s, when a global pandemic that made the world stop, made him stop, reassess and revive his idea that had lain dormant in the back of his mind. “My wife was encouraging, and I thought, ‘bugger it’, and I opened Bombora Beach Club,” he says. “The timing was great and my whole

“GROMS COME IN WITH SANDY FEET AND WET TOWELS AND I LOVE ITTHAT'S WHAT IT’S ALL ABOUT”

message is based on the culture: the surf culture and the skate culture.”

“‘Bombora’ is an Indigenous word that means ‘wave breaking on a shallow shelf’. And for a bombora - or ‘bomby’ - to work you need all the elements to come together to create a perfect wave,” explains Brooks. “I needed the elements to come together to create this store - everything in here is everything I believe in.” Brooks’ mission was to create a hole-in-the-wall surf and skate store in the heart of Burleigh Heads - and inside it’s clear to see which

is which. “The two cultures have split so much over the years that, as you come in, you can see them reflected in the two sides of the shop,” he says. “One is the fresh colours of summer and surfing, the other is the concrete kind of palette of graffiti and skating.”

In fact, Brooks has even created a subbrand specifically for the skateboarders: Juan Industries. The childlike hand-drawn logo was designed by his daughter, to represent that skateboarding is fun, simple and for everyone. “In the old days we skated because the surf was bad, but a lot of these kids today don’t give a damn about the surf,” he says. “In Bombora, there’s no right or wrong - that’s the beauty of skating and surfboarding, there’s no right style. It’s just your personal expression of what you want to do.”

GET ROLLING

Gold Coast Longboards

Cruise the esplanade in style on a longboard or cruiser made on the Gold Coast. Based in Burleigh Heads, creators Leigh and Steph, have taken inspiration from their love of travel, nature and the ocean and combined their distinctive designs with the highest quality components, to create a rolling piece of artwork and a super smooth ride. The decks are made from Canadian Maple and Bamboo and have two longboard styles (kicktail or dropthrough) and a classic cruiser. You can pimp your ride through different wheel colours: pastel blue, pastel pink, pastel green or classic black. goldcoastlongboards.com.au

Concrete Lines

Conveniently positioned right near the best skate path on the Gold Coast, overlooking Coolangatta and just a short cruise from the Cooly Skate Park, Concrete Lines has been catering to skateboarders since 2006. Whether you’re into street skating, downhill, longboarding or just cruising, the store has all the gear and everything you need - from shoes and hats to deck and wheels - to get you going. concretelines.com.au

Precinct Skate Shop

Trent Bonham and Julian Lee, co-founders of Precinct Skate Shop, live and breathe skateboarding. They believe the local skate shop should be the place where people can get together to find out about events, make friends and ‘talk smack’. The shop is bursting with decks, trucks and wheels, shoes and apparel, as well as magazines and sunnies. precinctskateshop.com.au

Brooks says that, for him, surfing and skating are a way of life. “I’m very old fashioned,” he explains. “It doesn’t matter what you surf, how you skate, any of that stuff, it’s about enjoying the lifestyle.” You could also say the pieces he’s curated in store are a personal reflection of himself. “The store is like you’ve literally just walked into my wardrobe,” he says with a laugh. “What I wore in the 80s and 90s, I don’t think that style ever left - especially skate culture with baggy shorts, all suburban and graffiti oriented.”

And, what about those groups of kids? “Groms come in every so often with sandy feet and wet towels and I love it - that’s what it’s all about,” Darwin says. “It’s a surf and skate shop, not a department store.”

HELLO HOLIDAY NOSTALGIA

Back in the day, when our seaside city became the destination of choice for sun lovers and holiday makers, the Gold Coast Highway was lined with motels. While many have been knocked down to make way for a new era of accommodation, some of these special spots remain and have been reimagined in retro style. Check in any time you like for a sublime stay with a healthy dose of holiday nostalgia.

WRITTEN BY KATE VELING

The Mysa Motel

Bring your bathers and 70s sunnies when you check into The Mysa Motel, ready for some sunning and swimming in the classic kidneyshaped pool. Unlike the pools of yesteryear, this one is magnesium, which is on point, because vintage vibes with a modern twist is something they do exceptionally well.

When local couple, Eliza and Jase, bought the place, the aim was to maintain the history and character of this retro gem, while giving it a sustainability and style upgrade. Whilst the original exterior remained unchanged, the seven rooms of this beautiful boutique accommodation got a major glow up.

Each is themed around a different colour with sleek interiors and thoughtful design. Not only are they seriously stylish, but feature sustainable elements like natural lighting and ventilation, recycled materials and filtered water. There’s still air-con for those sweaty summer days, but since The Mysa is solar powered and proudly registered with the EarthCheck Action Project, you can keep it cool and eco-conscious.

The ocean is a mere minute’s walk from your door, and many of Palm Beach’s best bars, restaurants and cafes are a short stroll away. Keyless entry and contactless check in makes it easy, but your excellent hosts are on hand to answer any questions, provide recommendations and ensure your stay is unforgettable. ESCAPE 57 GOLD COAST | WINTER 2024

NOTES FROM THE ROAD

LOCALE sat down with the remarkable Eleea - a talented musician known for her soulstirring songs and raw, emotive voice. From her beginnings as a ‘happy little traveller’, to her status as an award-winning singer-songwriter, Eleea’s journey is one of passion, perseverance and poignant storytelling.

THE ARTS 58

Eleea, your latest single ‘Just Friends’ was a finalist in the 2024 Queensland Music Awards Indigenous category. How did it feel to be recognised alongside artists like Busby Marou, Tia Gostelow, and Djawarray?

I’ve always been so grateful to be a part of the QLD music community, and to be acknowledged alongside such a high calibre of artists I genuinely admire. I feel very lucky to live in this state that’s filled to the brim with so much talent!

‘Climbing Trees’ brought you to the grand final of Listen Up Music’s Songwriting Prize. Can you share the story behind this autobiographical song and what the songwriting process was like for you?

The theme for last year’s competition was ‘Belonging’ and my song, ‘Climbing Trees’, told my story of growing up on a farm in Mullumbimby, then moving to the city, then solo travelling to bigger cities all over the world - yet never quite feeling like I’d found my feet anywhere. I remember writing it when I was about to head off for my first big solo Euro trip, and I was terrified. It was really lovely to share that song at the Grand Finals in Sydney and experience all the other songwriter’s interpretations of the theme.

You are currently recording your next EP with Kelsey Berrington. How has working with him influenced your music, and what can fans expect from this upcoming release?

I’ve been playing 100+ shows a year since I was about 20 and in many ways, I feel like I’ve always had a disconnect between my recorded music and my live show. I’m very proud of the indie-pop music I’ve recorded performing with a band, and the experimentation and fun I’ve had in the studio - however, as a mostly solo artist and traveller, it feels right to move towards the acoustic sound that matches the way I wrote this song. Kelsey Berrington releases and produces beautiful folk/country style music and has been a joy to work with on this new chapter of stripped back music.

Your 'Travel Collection' is inspired by your solo backpacking trips to over 45 countries. What do you love about travelling solo? Is there a specific destination that has had an impact on your music and songwriting?

I fell in love with solo backpacking at 19 on a spontaneous month in Japan, and I’ve never fallen out of love with the thrill of the unknown, the possibility of meeting new friends from all over the world and the interesting experiences travel brings. Since then, I’ve solo backpacked extensively through Southeast Asia and Europe, and have touched on America,

Africa and The Pacific. Somehow the travel bug is still biting me very hard!

‘The Travel Collection’ is an anthology of 140+ songs inspired by the 45 countries I’ve travelled to, with a song written about every single country/city. It has been a fantastic creative writing tool and way to keep my eyes open for inspiration in every facet of my trip. For example, I’ve gotten lyric ideas from graffiti on a wall in Vienna; the time I broke my foot hiking in the Austrian alps; and when I get bedbugs in Hungary.

These songs are like little postcards to myself of all my travel memories, so it’s a total joy to share them at my shows.

You’re a Gold Coast girl - how has the local environment and culture shaped your music and creative process? Are there any local spots that particularly inspire you?

No matter where I’ve travelled to, I always love coming home to the Gold Coast. This city has so much going for it, but I tend to get a lot of songwriting ideas when I walk my little old chihuahua, Trembles, on the beach every day. It’s a beautiful place to switch off my phone and connect with nature and creativity.

With your heritage of Indigenous Australian, European and Asian backgrounds, how do you weave these diverse cultural influences into your music?

I’ve always felt like a melting pot of all the different parts of my heritage, but mostly understood my place in it through personal oral histories that had been handed down. One’s cultural identity is very interesting, and probably only something I started understanding properly when I grew up a bit, moved from my small hometown and began travelling. Now, I have a huge interest in learning about other people’s backgrounds and experiences, especially when they differ greatly from mine.

My songwriting was heavily inspired by my roots, as almost all of my earliest songs were my retelling of my family’s stories and my experience being weaved into them. There was lots of material to write about, that’s for sure!

You've built an impressive catalogue of over 800 songs. What drives you, how do you continually find new inspiration?

I genuinely adore songwriting and feel like I’ve viewed the world through a storytelling lens since I wrote my first song aged 4.

I’m often most creatively driven when I’m experiencing big emotions: sadness, heartbreak or falling in love; but using tools like ‘The Travel Collection’ or

songwriting challenges that I set myself can also allow me to write freely without having to be rooted in strong emotion at the time, which makes the output a lot more sustainable.

You've performed at festivals like the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and Brisbane Festival. How do these different performance settings influence your live shows and connection with the audience?

I played at Edinburgh Fringe while on a 4-month busking tour throughout Europe in 2017, and it was such an amazing experience seeing a city like that come to life with so much art! And then back home, I’ve been lucky to play at many of the Southeast Queensland festivals and it’s always just a real joy to get to share my stories and music with new crowds.

I think every show that I play helps me hone my craft, whether it’s busking in a park in Rome; singing the national anthem at the Gabba or playing at a quiet bar to nobody.

You were a finalist on The Voice Australia. Has this experience shaped you as an artist, and what did you take away from participating in such a high-profile competition?

As an artist, where everyone’s taste is so subjective, it’s a very valuable thing to build a thick skin and have a healthy relationship with rejection. I really enjoyed taking part in The Voice and all of the great people I met along the many steps of auditioning before the televised Blind Auditions.

I like to think it’s a blessing in disguise that I didn’t progress very far in The Voice, as it led me to a really different path with my original music and allowed me to pursue my Journalism and Public Relations degree, which ultimately led me to work as a travel journalist and music publicist, alongside my singing work. I tend to just have faith that what doesn’t come to me, was never meant for me.

THE JOKE'S ON US

If you’re looking for a fun(ny) night out, the Comedy Scene on the Gold Coast is guaranteed to host a comedian who appeals to your sense of humour. Get ready for some belly laughs!

Heard any good jokes lately? According to researchers, what makes a gag funny is actually down to science: c=(m+nO)/p to be exact. This serious-looking formula multiplies the punchline’s hilarity level by considering the length of the joke buildup. Don’t get the gag? Thankfully, the comedy scene on the coast has cracked the formula for fun.

According to Marc Thompson, Marketing and Communications Manager at Currumbin RSL’s Soundlounge, which regularly hosts upcoming and well-known comedians, the comedy scene on the Gold Coast appears to be experiencing significant growth. “This

growth can be attributed to a combination of factors, including increased interest in comedy entertainment among local residents and tourists, as well as the efforts of venues like Soundlounge to diversify their programming beyond live music gigs.” The venue, upstairs of the RSL on Currumbin Creek, offers the perfect location for laughs and views. The roster of comedians, including Tahir, Peter Helliar, Arj Barker, Peter Rowsthorne, Akmal, Dave Thornton, Mel Buttle and Brett Blake bring diverse styles and appeal to various demographics, contributing to the richness and variety of the comedy scene in the region.

THE ARTS 62

You can forget dad jokes. Audiences on the Gold Coast have diverse expectations when it comes to comedy, says Thompson. “This reflects the broad spectrum of residents and visitors in the area. However, based on the success of recent performances at Soundlounge, it's evident that there is a strong demand for comedians who can deliver a mix of clever observational humour, cultural commentary, and relatable anecdotes. Additionally, comedians who cater to younger demographics, like Will Gibb [who is appearing shortly at Soundlounge], appear to be selling well, suggesting a growing interest among younger audiences in the region.”

Joshua Addison Armstrong, who runs Based Comedy and the Gold Coast Laughs Festival, alongside the Comedy Underground in the Basement at Home of The Arts (HOTA) agrees that the comedy scene on the Gold Coast is going from strength to strength. “We attract a pretty varied bunch of comedians from all levels, both nationally and internationally,” he says. For Joshua, there’s no specific type of comedic demand on the coast, instead he “books people we think are funny and try to have a diverse range of voices. Every audience has a different familiarity with comedy and comedy education.”

When Josh began running comedy shows ten years ago, he says that there was probably less exposure to a widespread genre of comedy on the Gold Coast. “People are more comedy-savvy today,” he says. “We offer a pretty eclectic range of comedian in the weekly shows in the HOTA basement, so there’s something for everyone.” Each artist has an audience and following and it’s wonderful we can bring these comedians to the coast.”

WHERE TO FIND THE LAUGHS

Soundlounge

An RSL may seem an unlikely place to find cutting edge comedy, but the upstairs rooms have long played host to comedy legends (and some pretty serious musicians too). Book a table downstairs for a sunset dinner over the Currumbin Creek, then head up for a belly full of laughs. Best of all, you can catch the courtesy bus (if you live within the vicinity of the venue), so you can continue the laughs long into the night. Book as a group and enjoy a fun-filled night out. soundlounge.com.au

Based Comedy

You can find Based Comedy’s showcased comedians almost every night of the week at venues around the Gold Coast. Their weekly shows at HOTA, Home of the Arts, on Saturday nights bring comedy to the Gold Coast's cultural precinct every week with showcases as well as solos from the most unique and hilarious voices in comedy. basedcomedy.com.au

From observational humour to political satire and everything in between, Based Comedy brings you the best of the best in stand-up comedy. THE DOYLES ART AWARD CELEBRATES 20 YEARS OF ART AND CULTURE IN THE HINTERLAND

As the weather gets colder, the days become shorter, and the trees in the charming Mudgeeraba Village dress up in their winter best, we know it’s time for the Doyles.

This year, the Doyles Art Award and exhibition will be open from 27 June to 7 July 10am-5pm at the beautiful Firth Park Community Centre in Mudgeeraba. This new venue provides a bigger space to exhibit paintings, modern facilities, excellent security, and better disability access. It also overlooks the rolling hills of the hinterland.

Artists from all over Australia have sent in their entries in the hopes of taking home a prize in the Landscape, Figurative, Still Life, or Junior categories. There is also an All Ability category. First prize in the landscape category earns a whopping $20,000 as this is the category that the exhibition’s namesake, d’Arcy Doyle, was famous for.

The major prize winners will be chosen by a high-profile panel of professionals including Susi Muddiman OAM – Director at HOTA, Natasha Edwards – Director at SWELL Sculpture Festival, and Hobie Porter – renowned Australian landscape painter.

Event Director Samantha Sinner says that she is excited to see the quality of the paintings at this year’s exhibition, and to create an art festival atmosphere in the cosy and quaint Mudgeeraba Village.

“The Mudgeeraba Village will come alive to host events and activities such as the Hinterland Spinners & Weavers yarn bombing, Gold Coast Urban Sketchers, still life drawing, and other art workshops. I strongly encourage visitors to check out the local cafes and small businesses that this vibrant village has to offer while they’re here visiting the Doyles and our sideline events.”

Diana Penaloza Aponte, owner of Kookaburra Art Studio for all abilities artists, remarked that several of her students eagerly look forward to participating in the Doyles each year. Some even start working on their piece as soon as the previous exhibition finishes.

Maree Nicholls, one of Diana’s students, commented that “2023 was my first ever Doyles experience, and it was incredible to receive an email informing me that I was a finalist in the Still

Life category. This achievement has bolstered my self-confidence. Through art, I feel that there are no limitations due to disability.”

The Doyles came from humble beginnings as the Mudgeeraba Mad Pumpkin Party and is now the longest run fine art prize on the Gold Coast. It is completely volunteer run, and the exhibition will always be free for visitors. The volunteer team always looks forward to welcoming people of all ages, from minibuses of nursing home residents to babies in carriers strapped to mum.

In 2023 the Doyles delivered over $70,000 back into the arts community by way of prizes and sales results. This input directly affects the viability of creatives continuing their work, and the team looks forward to growing this historically significant event for future generations.
