Early Signs and Symptoms of Prostate Cancer in the Elderly

Most people assume that prostate cancer only affects elderly men. However, prostate cancer can also occur in younger individuals, even those in their 40s and 50s.
Now, in elderly patients, the most common symptoms we observe are:
1. Falls
2. Memory loss
3. Urinary issues – particularly increased urgency and frequency
Normally, a healthy person may urinate three to four times a day, but someone with prostate symptoms may need to go seven to eight times or more a day. They may also experience frequent urination at night, disturbing their sleep. This occurs because they feel a constant sensation of bladder fullness and the urge to pass urine.
To identify prostate-related issues, doctors start with a simple blood test called PSA – Prostate Specific Antigen. A normal PSA level is less than 4, but in prostate cancer, this value may be significantly elevated. However, a high PSA doesn't always mean cancer – it could also indicate infection or inflammation.
To confirm, further tests are done.
Sometimes, a biopsy
Based on those results, we can stage the condition and then decide on the appropriate treatment plan.
As part of this awareness effort, people, especially those in the geriatric age group (70 years and above), should be alert to symptoms like:
Hesitancy in urination
Increased frequency
Straining during urination (strangury)
Bleeding in urine (hematuria)
Other lower urinary tract symptoms
