Welcome

Welcome to our October edition of Cheshire’s Golden Triangle magazine, where we focus on our thriving Town of Wilmslow, and the beautiful villages of Alderley Edge and Prestbury.

This absolutely packed 64-page edition has much to celebrate, with many awards being won in and around the golden triangle, from my very own BNI group winning the top award for most successful networking team of local business owners, to my daughter Sammie’s branch of WHSmith being awarded the best store of the area. The prep school children at our local independent schools are celebrating achievements and to top it all we are celebrating Diwali with the award-winning team at Indian Thali in Prestbury.

In Wilmslow, Hoda Construction, TKO Kitchens, JC Harvey painting and decorating services and Pavetar, for bespoke driveways, are taking the area by storm with their quality of work and fantastic reputations and Paradigm Security and Francis Fire have your safety and protection guaranteed.

There is much more to mention in this issue, so please read on, and as is often said about our magazines - put the kettle on, put your feet up - and enjoy a good read, and until our Christmas Special Edition from myself and my ‘ever-growing’ team “keep celebrating the wins, and relish the awards, you all deserve it!”

Connecting with Others as we Celebrate Together

Celebrating events such as achievements, key calendar dates and cultural festivals are one of the ways we come together as a School family. These celebrations allow us to boost wellbeing, create a sense of belonging and foster cultural understanding. They are also one of the ways we support the local community through acts of giving. Celebrating also reinforces positive behaviour as well as boosting self-esteem and a sense of accomplishment. It’s why our Merit and Courtesy Badges are so sought after by our pupils – they are our way of saying thank you and well done.

This September we got the School year underway with the celebration of our 115th birthday. We are really proud of our heritage and celebrating WPS’s birthday is always a highlight. Each class creates a birthday card for the School and we celebrate with a special assembly and, of course, a large cake. The autumn term gives us many reasons to celebrate once the candles have been blown out on our birthday cake.

Harvest Festival sees our pupils making up generous hampers of produce. These are brought in to assembly and then distributed to local charities and organisations. This year we are partnering with Wilmslow Food Friend to bring much needed food to families in need in the local area.

World Mental Health Day in October is celebrated at Wilmslow Prep as part of our important wellbeing programme. Last year we marked the theme, ‘Stand Out and

Show Up’ by wearing yellow accessories and this year pupils and staff will again don a bright yellow accessory to support the theme ‘It’s time to prioritise mental health’. Recognising awareness days such as a ‘celebration’ allows pupils to recognise, from an early age, that it’s ‘OK to be not OK’ and that it is good to talk about our feelings.

The Festival of Light, Diwali, to be celebrated at School on Friday, November 1st this year. Cultural festivals like this give us the opportunity to promote multiculturalism among our pupils; allowing us to celebrate diversity and fostering a sense of belonging for pupils who are celebrating Diwali at home. These festivals can be brought to life across the curriculum through art, music, food, drama and lessons such as geography, history and PSHEE.

Another key calendar date is Anti-Bullying Week in November. This annual event raises awareness of bullying and ways to prevent and respond to it. Last year we celebrated with activities across the week, including Odd Socks Day when children came to School in colourful odd socks to show individuality and empowerment. This year’s theme is Choose Respect and we will be celebrating and marking the day in odd socks once again!

Celebrating Armistice Day on November 11th allows us to reflect as we commemorate this historic day. We ask members of our local community to join us if they so wish to mark the occasion with a 2-minute silence outside school.

After what will be a busy few months of celebrations of varying types, we will bring the term to a close with our Christmas festivities. Delightful plays performed with glee and enthusiasm, our Choirs singing out in the community and our annual Christmas Carol Concert at St Bartholomew’s. And let’s not forget the Reindeer Ramble in aid of East Cheshire Hospice.

The children and teachers look forward to celebrations as they bring a sense of wellbeing and unity. Our celebrations take all forms – from out-andout gleeful to more sombre, thoughtful occasions that encourage us to pause and be mindful. They can all be used to broaden the curriculum, to learn about different cultures and historic events.

Simply put, they expand our pupils’ horizons and allow for self-expression. The important thing is that we connect with others as we celebrate together.

That’s the bit I like the best!

Immeasurable Benefits of Extracurricular Activities

Involvement in extracurricular activities and group sports offers a range of benefits for children, both physically and mentally. Academic pressures can be high, these activities provide a healthy balance to classroom learning, fostering well-rounded development. Whether it’s through football, drama clubs, dance classes, or debating societies, children reap numerous advantages that contribute to their social, emotional, and cognitive growth.

One of the primary benefits of participation in extracurricular activities and group sports is improved physical health. In an era where sedentary lifestyles are increasingly common due to technology and urban living, physical activity becomes essential. Sports such as football, rugby, or swimming not only improve cardiovascular health but also enhance coordination, strength, and endurance. Regular exercise from these activities can combat rising childhood obesity levels and establish lifelong habits that promote physical fitness.

Beyond physical health, extracurricular activities contribute significantly to mental well-being. The structured environment of group sports encourages discipline and routine, which can have a calming and grounding effect on children. This is especially beneficial in today’s fast-paced world where children are often exposed to high levels of stress and anxiety. Research has shown that exercise helps to reduce stress levels, releasing endorphins that boost mood and create a sense of well-being.

Another major advantage is the development of social skills. Engaging in group sports or teambased extracurricular activities requires children to collaborate, communicate, and build relationships

with their peers. These interactions teach important life skills such as teamwork, leadership, and conflict resolution. In team sports, children learn to work towards a common goal, understanding the importance of each member’s contribution. The experience of winning and losing as a team fosters resilience and the ability to handle success and failure with grace.

Extracurricular involvement can also enhance academic performance. Activities like music, debate, and drama engage the brain in different ways, improving cognitive skills such as problem-solving, memory, and creativity. Studies have suggested that children who participate in structured activities tend to perform better academically, as these activities foster a disciplined approach to managing time and responsibilities. In addition, children develop a sense of commitment and accountability, which can positively impact their academic work ethic.

Confidence building is another key benefit of involvement in extracurricular activities and sports. Success in these areas, whether it’s scoring a goal, performing in front of an audience, or excelling in a competition, instils a sense of achievement. This, in turn, boosts self-esteem and confidence. For children who may struggle academically, excelling in a non-academic area can provide them with a sense of identity and pride.

In addition, these activities often encourage the development of passions and interests that could shape a child’s future. A child who excels in football may be inspired to pursue a professional career in sports, or a student who loves drama may consider a future in the performing arts. Extracurricular activities allow children to explore and develop talents that might not be nurtured in the classroom setting.

Extracurricular activities and group sports do play a crucial role in the holistic development of children. They contribute to physical health, mental well-being, social development, academic performance, and personal growth. Encouraging children to participate in these activities ensures they acquire valuable life skills, build self-esteem, and cultivate interests that could shape their futures. In a world where pressures on young people are continually increasing, the benefits of engaging in such activities are immeasurable.

The Ryleys School

The Ryleys School has been established since 1877 and has been a valued part of the Alderley Edge community ever since. It has stood the test of time through two World Wars and navigated all the changes and challenges that life presents. This is a special place because of the people within its community and the level of care. Anyone who enters the doors of the school comments on its unique atmosphere and environment - a special blend of the traditional and the contemporary where the core values of respect, manners and gratitude are at the centre of a forwardthinking educational experience.

A key feature of the school’s provision is the specialist subject teaching, which starts in Early Years. French, Italian, ADT, music, science, computing, sport, and also drama…this level of expertise ensures that the curriculum is delivered to an extremely high standard in classes of around 15 pupils.

The personal development programme provides opportunities for pupils outside the academic arena and are pivotal in achieving successful outcomes. Such projects as building kit cars, the Global Schools Alliance and putting on quality productions such as Oliver and the Lion King, all play a part in the pupils’ development. This year we have introduced our ‘Inspiring Young Minds’ initiative which is designed to provide pupils with challenging and inspiring experiences outside the classroom by working with partner senior schools and business organisations. It helps to broaden the pupils’ horizons and appreciate the wealth of possibilities that life holds.

The mission statement of The Ryleys School is ‘to provide an outstanding education and opportunities which inspire pupils and nurture individual talents in an environment which celebrates diversity’. This is not simply a statement to put on the website, it was carefully considered, encapsulating what The Ryleys School is all about and it is something that we live and breathe on a daily basis.

We invite you to come and see this in action during our Open Week from the 14th to the 18th of October.

Personal school tours are available with headteacher, Mrs Langford, all year round.

There is also a Reception 2025 Taster Morning on Thursday 16th January 2025

Pownall Hall School Alumni

Reconnect at Annual Lunch

Last Saturday, the historic grounds of Pownall Hall School were abuzz with laughter, reminiscence, and a strong sense of camaraderie as past pupils and staff members gathered for a memorable Alumni event.

The event provided a unique opportunity for attendees to step back in time, relive fond memories, and strengthen the bonds that were forged within the walls many years ago.

One of the highlights of the day was a heart-warming trip down memory lane as attendees sifted through old photographs, each eager to spot themselves or their former classmates frozen in time.

Nostalgia filled the air as stories of yesteryears were shared, from stories of how one Form 2 teacher transformed the spelling ability of one alumnus, to escapades at climbing club where the boys scaled the walls of the Hall, the freezing outside changing and pool in the now Form 2 Quad, to adventures on residential trips to Scotland in Old Yellow (the yellow school minibus from back in the day); one notable trip where they stopped to hose down the inside because a sea crossing was too choppy for some!

The event also included an enriching tour of the school grounds, allowing alumni to revisit familiar classrooms, the Boddington Theatre, and the iconic 200-year-old current iteration of the Main Hall that stands as a testament to the school’s rich history, and the Hall’s even richer history sited slightly further back and dating to 1297.

Attendees expressed a sense of pride as they walked through the hallowed halls that had once been their second home, many talking of their passions such as drama and science which sparked within the walls of Pownall, and went on to be formative in their future careers.

To then cap off the day, a delightful lunch was served on the Headmaster’s Lawn, where our alumni enjoyed a feast of delicious food and engaging conversations in the picturesque surroundings of the school grounds. The relaxed atmosphere provided the perfect setting for old

friends to catch up, new connections to be made, and memories to be cherished. As the day drew to a close, there was a sense of gratitude and appreciation among the attendees for the opportunity to come together and celebrate the shared experiences that have shaped their lives. The event served as a reminder of the enduring spirit of community that defines the Pownall Hall School Alumni family.

“These Alumni, both staff and pupils, always have a home at Pownall. They are the very foundations upon which our beautiful school is built and they are always welcome home.”

For those who were unable to attend the event but wish to stay informed about future gatherings, we encourage you to register with our Alumni community to receive updates.

Join us as we continue to celebrate our shared history, forge new connections, and create lasting memories together.

India’s Golden Triangle, and Japan Discovery

We as humans are blessed to have so many amazing, beautiful countries to visit around the world, but one continent stands out for me, Asia. It has something for everyone, young and old. Solo travellers to families all with varying degrees of budgets.

Asia boasts some of the most stunning beaches, famous landmarks and wonderful experiences for all to enjoy. I’ve been lucky enough to research and book some ‘out of this world’ resorts all around Asia including Thailand, Bali and Sri Lanka to name just a few. I’m going to focus on two gems: India and Japan.

Firstly, experience the essence of India’s Golden Triangle with this itinerary, in which you’ll explore the vibrant streets of Delhi, marvel at the Taj Mahal in Agra at sunrise, and discover the majestic forts and palaces of Jaipur. With experiences including walking tours of Old Delhi and jeep rides at Amer Fort, this is the ideal itinerary to immerse yourself in the rich history and culture of this enchanting region.

No holiday in northern India is complete without a visit to Agra Fort and the city’s world-famous monument to love, the Taj Mahal, while in nearby Ranthambore you’ll head off on a jungle safari in search of tigers. There is so much to see and do in Jaipur, visit the Amer Fort by jeep ride, photo stop at Hawa Mahal (Palace of Winds), visit the wonderful Jaipur City Palace and the Jantar Mantar Jaipur.

Japan can be fast-paced but yet relaxing, traditional to futuristic. It can be experienced in short stays for example 8–10 nights, but I’d highly recommend staying for so much longer. When you think of Japan you think of Mount Fuji, Cherry Blossom and the Bullet Train but there is so much more to Japan than just these three.

Tokyo, a labyrinth of neon skyscrapers and bustling streets pulsates with modern energy yet preserves its spiritual heart with traditional temples and shrines. For a sensory overload experience the Shibuya Crossing, explore the Meiji Shrine and indulge in Tokyo’s culinary scene. Ueno Park cherry blossoms during March and April. Hakone is known for the perfect views of Mount Fuji, Within Hakone National Park where you can experience the hot springs (onsens) and traditional Ryokan with tatami mats.

For the more adventurous, amazing hiking is available within Hakone. Visit Osaka castle built in 1583 and take in the stunning views from the observatory at Umeda Sky Building. Osaka is also known as a foodie paradise and is the culinary capital of Japan. Kyoto is the centrepiece of Japanese culture showcasing its rich history. There are over a thousand Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines. A must-see of this nature paradise is Fushimi Inari Shrine and the Zen gardens of Ryoan-Ji.

To get a full overview of Japan I’d recommend one of the luxury cruise companies such as Scenic, Silversea, Azamara, Regent or Holland America. They are usually a longer cruise for at least 14 nights to embrace as much of Japan as you can, and enjoy this island nation; blending ancient traditions with modern innovations.

Diwali The Festival of Lights

Deepawali, also known as Diwali, is one of the most anticipated and widely celebrated festivals in India and across many parts of the world among Hindus.

Diwali is a five-day-long celebration that commences with Dhanteras and ends with Bhai Dooj. It is often considered the festival of lights, joy, prosperity, and happiness.

Celebrated with great enthusiasm and joy, Diwali falls on the darkest night of the year in the Hindu month of Kartik, called Kartik Amavasya.

People celebrate Diwali by lighting up their homes and streets with diyas and candles, dressing up in new clothes, exchanging gifts, and indulging in delicious traditional food.

↓ Rangolis are vibrant, decorative designs created on the floor using colored powders, rice, or flowers, symbolizing prosperity and welcoming positive energy during Diwali. These intricate patterns are often made at the entrances of homes to invite the blessings of gods and ward off negative energies.

The origins of Diwali can be traced back to ancient Hindu mythology. According to the legend, Lord Rama, the seventh incarnation of Lord Vishnu, returned to his kingdom of Ayodhya after defeating the demon king Ravana.

Since it was a no-moon day (Amavasya) in the Hindu month of Kartik, on the night they came back, the people of Ayodhya welcomed Lord Rama by lighting diyas (earthen lamps) and decorating their houses with rangolis (coloured patterns).

On the other hand, in South India, people celebrate the occasion as the day when Lord Krishna defeated the demon Narakasura. Additionally, it is believed that Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi got married on this day. Alternate legends also claim that Goddess Lakshmi was born on the new moon day of Kartik month.

All over the world, people celebrate Deepavali, the festival of lights, with great joy and enthusiasm. In every home, people worship Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi along with valuable items.

After the puja is concluded, devotees distribute sweets and gifts among their neighbours and friends. Both children and elders burst crackers, and also light diyas to celebrate this occasion.

There are many different ways to say “Happy Diwali”

A traditional greeting is:

“Wishing you a Diwali that brings happiness prosperity and joy to you and all your family.”

You can also say:

“May your life be as colourful, shimmering and magical as the lights of Diwali.”

Another can be:

“May every aspect of your life be as luminous and wonderful as the lights on the lamps of Diwali.”

Nestled in the heart of Prestbury Village, Indian Thali offers an unforgettable dining experience that seamlessly blends modern elegance with the rich traditions of Indian cuisine. The moment you step inside, you’re greeted by an ambiance of understated sophistication. The décor, with its subtle nods to Indian heritage, combines clean lines and refined touches that create a warm, inviting atmosphere. The restaurant’s elegant interior sets the stage for a meal that is as beautifully presented as it is delicious.

From rich curries to fragrant biryanis and freshly baked naan, every bite of the Maharaja Thali is a journey through the complex and varied flavours of India. It’s an experience that leaves you feeling not just satisfied, but truly indulged.

Another dish that has become a favourite among locals is the slow-cooked Railway Lamb, a dish steeped in history and brimming with flavour. A Culinary Gem at Indian Thali: Chicken Karahi

At Indian Thali, nestled in the heart of Prestbury Village, we pride ourselves on offering dishes that are not just meals, but experiences. Today, we’re excited to share the secrets behind one of our most beloved dishes.

The Chicken Karahi is a classic Indian dish, cherished by our chefs and patrons alike, and it embodies the essence of traditional flavours with a touch of modern flair. The Chicken Karahi is a vibrant, aromatic dish that showcases the perfect balance of spices and succulent chicken, cooked to perfection.

Ingredients

100ml vegetable oil

1 cup of water

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1/2 tablespoon garam masala

1 tablespoon cumin powder

1 1/2 tablespoons coriander powder

1/2 tablespoon chilli powder

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon garlic and ginger paste

5 ripe tomatoes, chopped

2 medium onions, finely chopped

1.5 kg chicken breast, cubed

1 small bell pepper, chopped

*Chef’s Tip

This recipe is best served with rice, naan, or chapati

Method

Step 1

Heat the Wok: Start by heating 100ml of vegetable oil in a medium-hot wok. As the oil warms up, the kitchen fills with the anticipation of what’s to come.

Step 2

Sauté the Onions: Add the finely chopped onions and sauté for 6-7 minutes until the edges turn a rich golden brown, releasing a sweet, caramelised aroma.

Step 3

Add the Chicken: Toss in the cubed chicken, stirring until it’s well combined with the onions. This is where the magic begins—the chicken starts absorbing the flavours right from the start.

Step 4

Spice It Up: Now, it’s time to add the heart of the dish—the spices. Mix in the chopped tomatoes, cumin, coriander, chilli powder, garam masala, and garlic-ginger paste, along with the salt, pepper, and chopped bell pepper. Stir everything

together, ensuring the chicken is beautifully coated in this vibrant, flavourful mixture.

Step 5

Simmer and Cook: Cook on high heat for 6-7 minutes, letting the spices infuse into the chicken. Then, add a splash of water, cover the wok, and reduce the heat to medium-low. Let the Chicken Karahi simmer gently for 20 minutes, allowing the flavours to meld together perfectly.

Step 6

Finish with a Sizzle: After 20 minutes, uncover the wok, increase the heat, and cook until the water evaporates, reducing the sauce to a rich, thick consistency. Remember, a true Chicken Karahi is meant to be a drier dish, where the spices cling to each succulent piece of chicken.

At Indian Thali, we believe in sharing not just our food, but our passion for the rich culinary traditions of India. This Chicken Karahi is more than just a dish; it’s a journey into the heart of Indian flavours. While we’re delighted to share this recipe with you, nothing compares to experiencing the true taste of Chicken Karahi prepared by our skilled chefs.

We invite you to visit us at Indian Thali, where every dish is crafted with the finest ingredients and a passion for excellence. Whether you’re a seasoned foodie or exploring Indian cuisine for the first time, we promise that you will have an unforgettable dining experience.

Nantwich

A Charming Market Town

Nantwich, a historic market town in Cheshire, England, dates back to Roman times when it was known for its salt production. The Romans extracted salt from the River Weaver’s brine springs, and this industry continued into the Middle Ages, making Nantwich a key salt-producing centre. Its name derives from “wich,” an old English word for a brine town.

In the 13th century, Nantwich grew as a bustling market town and played an important role in the English Civil War.

It was a Parliamentarian stronghold and withstood a Royalist siege in 1644, an event commemorated by the annual “Battle of Nantwich” re-enactment. The Great Fire of 1583 devastated the town, destroying much of its timber-framed buildings. However, it was swiftly rebuilt, and many of its black-and-white half-timbered houses still stand today.

Nantwich’s economy evolved over time, moving from salt to leather, textiles, and agriculture. The town’s proximity to Crewe led to its participation in the Industrial Revolution, but it largely retained its rural character.

Today, Nantwich is known for its historic architecture, including St. Mary’s Church, and its annual cheese show, reflecting its rich agricultural heritage. Its picturesque streets continue to attract visitors interested in its history and vibrant community events like the Nantwich Food Festival and Nantwich Jazz, Blues & Music Festival, draw large crowds. These

events highlight the town’s thriving food scene and lively arts culture. Additionally, the nearby Brine Baths, a remnant of Nantwich’s salt production history, add to the town’s appeal as a place of relaxation and wellness.

Nantwich also boasts a variety of independent shops, cafés, and restaurants, offering a personalised and intimate experience for visitors. Just two minutes out of town is the prestigious Nantwich Clinic complete with a private GP practice and it’s also the home to Sovereign Properties where Debbie Boardman and her team help you to ‘sell your property the stress-free way’.

Its proximity to scenic countryside and walking trails makes it a great destination for nature lovers as well. Stretch your legs on a pleasant walk from the town centre, taking in the Riverside Park, the Shropshire Union Canal and the historic Welsh Row or discover some of the fascinating history of the town brought to life by Nantwich Museum.

Altogether, Nantwich combines historical allure with modern attractions, making it a captivating spot for both history buffs and casual tourists, and well worth a visit.

How Private Health Insurance Saved my Finger

Private Health Insurance was one of those things that I thought only millionaires had. So, when I started working for MNM Healthcare Ltd, an Appointed Representative of WPA Healthcare Practice Plc, selling WPA policies, I was pleasantly surprised at the affordability.

I was on my own policy for about 6 months when I severely damaged my hand – broken and dislocated (amongst other things). A big injury. At first, I thought it would heal on its own but after a week of pain, I decided to do some research.

I originally went to the NHS who were fantastic, but there was a long wait for surgery and the pain was so bad I was not able to work or drive.

It was at this point I decided to utilise my WPA Healthcare Scheme.

I booked an appointment with their remote GP and within 4 hours they rang me and wrote me a referral letter to see a Specialist. WPA offer freedom of choice when choosing a Specialist, therefore I was able to see exactly who I wanted.

I then booked myself in for an initial consultation just two days later where it was confirmed I needed surgery, and quickly. A CT scan and pre-operative tests were carried out and within a few days I had successful surgery where three metal pins were

placed in my finger. I returned to work the next Monday and was able to drive again shortly after.

From GP referral to surgery in 11 days. WPA helped speed up the healing of my finger injury, with professionalism and care at every stage.

Unlock Your Full Potential

In the hustle and bustle of today’s world, it can be challenging to maintain mental clarity, physical fitness, and emotional balance. Yet, there is a growing awareness of the incredible synergy between mindfulness and exercise. When combined, these two practices create a “superpower” that can transform our overall health, happiness, and performance in life.

This superpower emerges from the intersection of mental focus, emotional regulation, and physical vitality. Let’s explore how these practices amplify one another and why integrating mindfulness with exercise is a powerful tool for modern living.

What is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness is the practice of being present in the moment without judgment. It involves tuning into your thoughts, emotions, and sensations, while fully experiencing what’s happening around you. By cultivating mindfulness, you become more aware of your mental patterns, reducing anxiety and stress, and increasing focus and emotional resilience.

Rooted in ancient meditation practices, mindfulness helps people to live consciously in the present rather than getting lost in worries about the future or regrets about the past. Over the past few decades, science has shown that mindfulness enhances emotional intelligence, improves mental health, and even rewires the brain for more positive thinking.

The Power of Exercise

Exercise is the body’s natural way to maintain vitality. Regular physical activity strengthens muscles, enhances cardiovascular health, boosts the immune system, and elevates mood through the release of endorphins, often referred to as “feel-good” hormones. It also improves cognitive function by promoting neurogenesis—the creation of new neurons—and increasing blood flow to the brain.

Whether it’s running, swimming, strength training, or yoga, exercise activates your body and mind, increases energy, and promotes relaxation. However, the benefits of exercise go beyond the physical; it also enhances mental clarity, reduces symptoms of depression, and helps to manage stress.

The Synergy Between Mindfulness and Exercise

The real magic happens when mindfulness and exercise come together. Here’s how combining the two unlocks your full potential:

2 Stress Reduction & Emotional Regulation

Mindfulness calms the mind and helps you detach from negative thought patterns. When paired with the endorphin-boosting effects of exercise, the result is a powerful antidote to stress and anxiety. After a workout, you feel lighter, both physically and mentally, because your body and mind have worked in unison to process and release tension.

Exercise can provide a space to channel emotions, and when approached mindfully, it becomes a form of moving meditation. Rather than just burning calories, you are also burning off mental clutter, making room for clarity and emotional balance.

1 Enhanced Focus and Performance

When you practice mindfulness during exercise, you train your brain to stay focused on the task at hand, increasing your overall performance. Rather than letting your mind wander, you can direct your attention to your breath, body movements, and physical sensations. This heightened awareness not only improves your form, reducing the risk of injury, but it also helps you achieve a “flow state”—a mental state of complete absorption where time seems to disappear, and performance peaks.

For athletes and fitness enthusiasts, being mindful during training helps develop greater body awareness, which leads to better control and precision. This can significantly improve results, whether it’s lifting heavier weights, running faster, or improving coordination.

3 Improved Recovery and Rest

Many athletes overlook the importance of recovery, focusing solely on the “go hard or go home” mentality. However, mindfulness brings attention to the body’s need for rest and recovery. By tuning into how your body feels post-workout, you become

more aware of the need for proper stretching, sleep, and nutrition.

Mindfulness can also prevent overtraining, which is a common cause of injury. When you’re mindful of your body, you’re more likely to recognise early signs of fatigue or strain, allowing for better recovery, fewer injuries, and sustained long-term progress.

How to Combine Mindfulness & Exercise

Mindful Running or Walking

Pay attention to each step, the rhythm of your breathing, and how your body moves. Notice how your muscles engage and release with each stride.

Yoga and Pilates

These exercises blend mindfulness and movement, focusing on breath control, flexibility, and strength.

Strength Training

Instead of rushing through reps, slow down and focus on the contraction and release of each muscle. Feel the burn and notice how your body responds.

Breathwork During Exercise

Incorporate mindful breathing into any workout. Focusing on deep, controlled breathing helps maintain focus, reduce fatigue, and increase endurance.

4 Mental Resilience and Confidence

When you cultivate mindfulness, you’re better able to observe negative thoughts without letting them spiral out of control. And when you exercise regularly, you build the physical and mental stamina to tackle challenges head-on.

Mindfulness and exercise, when practised together, create a superpower that transforms your body, mind, and spirit. The combination allows you to be more present, reduce stress, improve performance, and foster resilience. Whether you’re looking to enhance your physical abilities, sharpen your mind, or find peace in your busy life, integrating these two practices is the key to unlocking your full potential. This powerful combination can elevate your life in ways that extend far beyond the gym or meditation cushion.

What is a Modern Auction?

In today’s world, online property auctions are becoming an increasingly popular way of selling houses. It’s like an estate agency sale but without all the toing and froing, delays and lack of commitment from viewers. Instead, you remain in control and have complete transparency of offers as they happen.

Because it’s online, buyers can access the sales from anywhere, in the comfort of their home or office and see the bids live. This opens the auction up to a much wider audience, and the transparency of bids can result in increased sales prices as interested buyers know what they need to offer to secure your property, so you achieve the best price. Your property will also never sell for less than your agreed reserve figure.

An auction has a definite end date, normally 28 or 56 days, depending on your instruction so there’s none of the long-drawn-out process and multiple chain breaks that can happen with traditional sales. Once your reserve has been met or exceeded and the auction ends, your property is as good as sold. Everything’s sorted and you’re free to get on with the next stage of your life.

↑ Debbie, our founder, has been involved in the property business for over 20 years, including a period in Hong Kong, helping her to develop a unique vision for seeing what can be achieved

How Does the Process Work?

First, you’ll need to get in touch with us to talk about selling your property with 0% sales fees. Then we will view your property, make a valuation, organise high quality photography, and create detailed floor plans.

From there, we will agree an attractive starting bid, or a guide price, to generate interest. There will be an undisclosed reserve price which your property will not sell for less than unless agreed upon before.

The property will enter the auction, we will add all the necessary details, and then promote it across leading property portals and social media platforms.

We produce a legal pack at no upfront cost so buyers can carry out their due diligence before placing an offer.

In addition to this, we will also encourage viewers to take part in a video tour of your property - a physical viewing will be arranged for buyers who we have qualified as genuine.

There will be no time wasters.

On the day of the auction, the bids will come in online, and the highest bid will win, much like a traditional auction. You can then set a completion date, typically within 28 or 56 days, and then your job is done!

Sell your property in weeks at market value the conventional way with a full upfront legal pack and home-buyers survey to ensure an open, honest and transparent sale. This is the future, and ahead of the curve.

Cosy Vibes of Autumn

Autumn is a season marked by warm, earthy tones, and cosy vibes, making it the perfect time to infuse these elements into interior decoration. Decorating with autumn colours involves using rich, warm hues like deep oranges, rusty reds, golden yellows, browns, and muted greens. These colours can create a welcoming, serene ambiance that reflects the season’s natural beauty. Here’s how you can use autumn colours effectively in your home’s interior décor.

1 Start with a Neutral Base

A neutral palette serves as the perfect backdrop for autumnal colours. Shades of beige, soft whites, taupe, and light grays allow the warmer hues of autumn to pop without overwhelming the space. Paint your walls in a neutral tone or use light-coloured furniture, which will provide a canvas for layering autumn-inspired accents. These base tones create balance and ensure the space feels grounded and timeless.

2 Rich Textiles and Upholstery

The easiest way to introduce autumn colours into your home is through textiles and upholstery. Swap out your summer linens for thicker fabrics like velvet, wool, and faux fur in autumn shades.

Consider accent pillows in burnt orange, mustard yellow, and deep red to add warmth to your living spaces. Layer a chunky knit throw in earthy browns or muted greens over a neutral sofa. These textiles add depth and texture to the room, making it feel more inviting as the temperatures drop.

3 Focus on Natural Elements

Autumn is a season that celebrates nature, so bring the outdoors in by incorporating organic elements. Wooden furniture, especially in warm, rich finishes, works beautifully with autumnal tones. Consider using reclaimed wood for tables, shelves, or even decorative wall panels.

For a softer touch, dried flowers and foliage in amber, burgundy, and ochre shades can be arranged in ceramic vases or woven baskets. Eucalyptus, wheat, and pampas grass are popular choices for autumn, adding a rustic yet elegant feel to your décor.

4 Warm Lighting

Autumn’s cosy atmosphere is enhanced by warm, ambient lighting. Replace cool-toned bulbs with warm white or soft amber lights to set a relaxing mood. Add table lamps with textured, neutral lampshades or use pendant lighting with copper or bronze finishes to complement the seasonal colour palette.

Candles are a must in autumn décor, as their flickering light instantly creates a sense of warmth and comfort. Use candles in shades of deep orange, red, or gold, and place them in glass or metallic holders for a soft, glowing effect.

5 Use Seasonal Accents

Autumn-themed decorations bring the season’s spirit to life. Incorporate pumpkins, gourds, and pine cones into your centrepiece arrangements, or display them on shelves and mantels. Use woven baskets to store blankets, magazines, or firewood, giving your home a cosy, lived-in feel.

Decorative bowls filled with autumnal fruits like apples and pears can add both colour and freshness to your dining or kitchen spaces. Opt for metallic accents in copper or gold for candleholders, trays, or vases, as these add a hint of luxury while staying in tune with the autumn aesthetic.

7 Autumn Hues in the Kitchen

Extend the autumn palette into your kitchen with seasonal touches. Swap out your usual dish towels and table linens for ones in warm autumn shades. Consider updating your dinnerware with earthy tones like terracotta or ochre for a cohesive look. Place a vase with dried flowers or branches on the worktop, or create an autumn-themed centrepiece for your dining table to tie the space together.

8 Layer Rugs and Carpets

Rugs are a great way to introduce warmth into your home, both visually and physically. Consider adding area rugs in rich, autumnal tones like burnt orange, rust, or dark brown to your living room, hallway, or bedroom. For added texture, layer rugs of different sizes and materials. Natural fibre rugs, such as jute or sisal, can be paired with wool or faux fur rugs for a cosy, multidimensional effect.

6 Autumn-Inspired Artwork

Art is another powerful tool to incorporate autumn colours. Hang paintings or prints that reflect autumn landscapes, such as forests with golden leaves, sunsets with orange and red skies, or abstract art in earthy tones. Framed botanical prints or illustrations of autumn foliage can also enhance the seasonal feel. If you want a more subtle approach, use frames in materials like wood, brass, or bronze, which naturally echo the warmth of the autumn palette.

Decorating with autumn colours is all about embracing warmth, cosiness, and the beauty of nature. By incorporating rich textiles, natural elements, and a warm colour palette, you can transform your home into a seasonal retreat that mirrors the comfort and beauty of the season. With thoughtful touches of autumn hues in every room, your home will feel both stylish and inviting, perfectly suited to the essence of the season.

Jacqui Priestley spends five minutes with Helen Long of HL Utilities

What made you change careers from being a teacher to setting up HL Utilities?

My career change was driven by the need for more time with my growing family. I’m still passionate about early years education and take great pride in being part of a child’s development. I hold a First-Class BA (HONS) in Early Years with QTS, and although I’ve transitioned careers, I still work in a supply role, stepping in when schools need cover or an early years specialist.

HL Utilities came about when I struggled to manage my household bills. With so many options, it was hard to find the best deal. If I was having trouble, others must have been too. That’s when I discovered Utility Warehouse (UW) which consolidates all your bills into one app.

I became a UW partner to save on my bills, but soon realised I could help others too, and that’s when HL

Utilities was born. I now offer utilities from multiple suppliers and can even provide special commercial rates for businesses, from local shops to factories.

Though it’s still early days, HL Utilities has already provided me with greater financial stability and flexibility to support my family. I love where I live, and helping families and businesses save money in my community is incredibly fulfilling. After all, everyone has utility bills to pay, no matter how wealthy they are.

What does HL Utilities do?

HL Utilities offers a simple, no-obligation service to help you manage your commercial or domestic bills. I provide quotes for gas, electricity, broadband, SIM cards, payment machines, and business insurance. If you use it, I can quote it.

Usually, I’ll find you a cheaper option, but even if I can’t, the advice is free. My goal is to save families and businesses both money and time, making every conversation worthwhile—even if you don’t choose my services.

Does it really save me money?

In almost every case, yes! If I can’t save you money, I’ll tell you where you can find a cheaper deal. So far, I’ve only not saved one person money.

Recently, I’ve helped families avoid the 10% energy price cap increase and supported elderly clients who lost their winter fuel allowance. With prices set to rise again, my goal is to help as many people as possible before that happens. HL Utilities was

created to offer honest quotes, helping families save money so they can focus on what matters.

Is it a complicated process that takes a lot of time?

No, it’s quick and simple. Whether it’s domestic or commercial, we’ll have a relaxed chat—online or in person—about your bills and options. I’ll then provide a quote for you to consider, with no pressure. It’s straightforward, and that’s what I love—the facts speak for themselves.

Are you looking to grow the company?

Yes! I’m always looking for people interested in career changes or flexible jobs.

This role works well as a full-time or parttime opportunity, offering great flexibility with rewarding financial payments. If you’re curious, get in touch and let’s chat.

The Cheshire Mercantile

The Cheshire Mercantile is a new, independent speciality food shop in Wilmslow owned by Andy and Haley Tyson. The store boasts a large selection of artisan cheese and craft beer, but also has an array of commodity goods from many local producers of coffee, pasta, chutney, jam, yoghurt, crackers, bread and gin - just to name a few!

Whether it’s a cheeseboard that’s required, a custom hamper, unique food gifts, a bottle of organic wine or simply to stock up the beer fridge, this is the place to go. Big hitting European cheeses sit along local heroes such as ‘Drunken Burt’ and the UK’s big craft beer scene sees cans on the shelves from Poynton to Penzance.

Wanting to create a spot where people can purchase great food and drink but also a place for people to sit in and chat, the Tyson’s installed 4 draft beer taps and a small seating area for beverages or the occasional cheese board. With a passion for connecting the producer with the customer, they host Meet the Maker events at weekends, have begun working with local breweries for cheese and beer evenings and are planning Christmas events in the shop.

The independent shop is having a resurgence - something they feel passionate about.

In 2010, Andy left his job as a music teacher and went to work on a farm in Louisiana where he met Haley. That was the beginning of a journey working together on farms and small holdings in the US and UK, living out of backpacks and learning.

On eventually parting and going back to their own countries (and their old jobs!) in 2013 - Andy, a UK national and Haley, a US national, had decided that they wanted to get married. One lengthy immigration process and one big career change later, Andy began training as a cheesemonger and found a love of fermented curd and speciality food.

Learning his craft from experienced cheesemongers, he completed his certified cheese professional status in 2018 whilst working in leadership for Whole Foods Market and Haley worked as a self-employed calligrapher. Both in settled jobs in the US, Haley and Andy’s dream has always been to have their own store where they could both use their skills to build a community shop based around good food and drink.

Therefore, in 2023, with two kids in tow (now 3!) they left their jobs, sold their house in the US and moved back to the UK with the intention of opening a business. And so we find The Cheshire Mercantile.

Sticky Ginger Pudding with Whiskey Sauce

Robin Wallace: There’s something wonderfully comforting about indulging in a winter pudding as the chill of autumn sets in. The rich warmth of stewed fruits, spiced with cinnamon or nutmeg, and a drizzle of custard or cream creates a cosy moment of bliss. Whether it’s a traditional bread pudding, sticky toffee, or a spiced apple crumble, each bite feels like a hug from the inside. It’s the perfect way to embrace the changing seasons and savour the comforting flavours of autumn. We all have a favourite and this sticky ginger pudding with a heady kick of whiskey sauce is mine...

Ingredients

Makes 6-8 individual puddings:

100g pitted dates

2 x 2cm (approximate) cubes stem ginger in syrup, drained

10ml tamarind paste

15ml black treacle or golden syrup

100g self-raising flour

15ml ground ginger

5ml ground cinnamon

3ml bicarbonate of soda

1 extra large egg

30g butter, softened, plus extra for greasing

150g soft dark brown sugar

Optional to serve:

30ml pecan or walnuts, roughly chopped

150ml cream, for whipping

For the pudding sauce:

150ml cream

75g dark or light soft brown sugar

40g butter

75ml stem ginger syrup (from the jar), if you don’t have enough ginger syrup from the jar make up the volume with golden syrup or use smooth apricot jam

10ml tamarind paste

1ml flaked sea salt

100ml whiskey

Method

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 180⁰C. Grease six 175ml basins or moulds and line the bases with circles of baking paper. Place the moulds on a baking tray. Put the dates in a heatproof bowl and pour over 150ml boiling water. Set it aside to cool.

Step 2

Place the dates, the stem ginger, tamarind paste and syrup or treacle into a food processor and blend to a purée. Add the flour, ground ginger, cinnamon, bicarbonate of soda, egg, butter and sugar in a large mixing bowl. Stir in the puréed dates and mix by pulsing quickly until well combined. Do not over mix!

Step 3

Spoon the mixture into the prepared moulds to about two thirds full. Bake for 20 minutes, or until well risen and firm to the touch.

Step 4 - The Sauce

Place all the ingredients except the whiskey into a saucepan and bring to a gentle simmer. Cook for 2–3 minutes, stirring constantly until smooth and glossy. (Watch out for splashes and don’t be tempted to touch or taste the sauce as it will be extremely hot)

Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the whiskey - Enjoy!

↑ Cream can help counteract the sweetness and intensity of the puddings!
