SUPPORTING EVERY ASPECT OF A CHILD’S WELLBEING

Bradley Lavagna-Slater, Headteacher, Wilmslow Prep
At Wilmslow Preparatory School, we believe that a child’s wellbeing underpins their learning, growth and social development. Our aim is to provide every pupil with a strong, positive start in life and by nurturing the emotional, social and physical aspects of wellbeing, we help children build the foundations to become happy, resilient, and successful adults.
Emotional and Mental Wellbeing
Children are not always able to express how they are feeling or articulate their worries, that’s why creating a culture of openness, where pupils feel able to share with teachers, friends, or parents, is central to our approach. To support this, we have a dedicated Mental Health Co-ordinator who ensures the wellbeing of both pupils and staff remains a priority.
We also take part in national initiatives such as World Mental Health Day, when staff and pupils are reminded that mental health matters, and by raising awareness we can reduce the stigma that can be attached to seeking support.
Practical tools are also in place in the classroom. Worry Boxes give pupils a way to share concerns without needing to start a difficult conversation, and daily “mood thermometers” allow us to check in on how the class is feeling in the morning and again
at the end of the day. These small, consistent steps make a big difference in creating an environment where children feel heard and supported.
Social Wellbeing
A sense of community and kindness is another cornerstone of life at Wilmslow Preparatory School. Each year we take part in Anti-Bullying Week, using lessons, assemblies, and creative activities in art, drama, and comprehension to reinforce the message that every child deserves respect and kindness. The pupils’ work is proudly displayed throughout the school as a lasting reminder of the power of positive actions.
We also place great value on peer support. Our Prep 6 ambassadors act as buddies for younger pupils, and our DHL-sponsored “Buddy Bench” in the playground has become a trusted place for
children to find friendship. The inscription –‘we sit, we chat and ask each other questions, we leave as friends with all good intentions’captures the spirit of inclusion and warmth that we encourage every day.
Physical Wellbeing
Physical health is closely linked to both emotional balance and academic success. By offering balanced meals and teaching the importance of nutrition, we give children the knowledge to make healthy choices. Beyond this, our broad programme of sports and activities from athletics and team games to yoga, dance, archery, and judo - ensures that every pupil has the opportunity to discover an activity they love.
Being active not only supports fitness but also boosts confidence, strengthens friendships, and provides children with a valuable outlet for selfexpression. We see time and again how pupils who are engaged in physical activity are happier, more settled, and more focused in their learning.
Growing Together
Working in partnership with parents and external organisations, we take great pride in fostering a culture where expectations are high and children feel both supported and capable of achieving them. Every child is encouraged to grow in their own unique way, while forming friendships and experiences that we hope will stay with them for life.

Families are welcome to visit the school by booking a tour at any time. The school’s next Open Day is on November 12th from 10am to 12 noon.

THE POWER OF CONNECTION BUILDING YOUTH WELLBEING TOGETHER
When we think about health and wellness, its easy to consider exercise, healthy eating and getting enough sleep. For many young people wellbeing is about something deeper, feeling connected and supported. Having someone to share the highs and the lows, feeling seen and being listened to.
Daniel’s Story
Daniel was referred to our counselling service as he was struggling after the tragic loss of his mother. He found a place where he could talk about her, fearing he would upset dad if he talked about her at home. He shared what she meant to him and the great things she had done. In time he was able to join in some of the group workshops and eventually attend our youth club. He found a safe space to be. His dad thrust into parenting alone also attended our parent workshops, finding support from other parents and the confidence to be the best dad he already was. Wilmslow Youth remains a welcoming safe place and community where they both were able to begin their journey through grief together. Stories like Daniels show us why connection matters. Every day we meet young people carrying invisible burdens and pressure. Without support
these can have a huge impact of their physical and mental health and relationships. Young people need a third place, a place separate from the pressures of life and school, where they can find a sense of safety, friendship and compassion. To find a place where they feel empowered and build resilience. A place to belong. A shared story, a laugh, a game and a listening ear can be transform a young persons day and their outlook.
Our Services
We offer a number of services in our community, WY Café – a youth club, a space to come with friends or come alone, a place where there is always a listening ear and trusted youth workers and volunteers to talk to. We offer counselling and mentoring 1:1 and group activities and workshops to support young people find life tricky. We support the

local school by delivering some services during the school day and help those young people struggling with school. We support the whole family and offer 1-1 counselling services for parents/carers and those who work with young people in our community. The adage, ‘you are only as happy as your least happy child’ rings true and at Wilmslow Youth we want to support the whole family and in turn create an environment for our young people to find a sustainable path to mental wellness.
By investing in these connections today we are investing in stronger, healthier futures for our whole community. When young people feel connected, they don’t just cope, they thrive.

DAWALI IN CHESHIRE A FESTIVAL OF LIGHT & TOGETHERNESS
Every autumn, Cheshire shines a little brighter as families celebrate Diwali – the Festival of Lights, which this year is held on Monday 20th October. Across towns and villages, from Chester to Crewe, the Asian community marks the occasion with food, colour, and the joy of being together.
For many, Diwali is about more than tradition. It’s a chance to pause, reflect, and celebrate hope – the victory of light over darkness. Homes are decorated with rows of flickering diyas (lamps), kitchens are filled with the smell of sweet treats like ladoos and jalebi, and fireworks burst across the night sky. Children love the sparkle and excitement, while grandparents delight in passing on stories and prayers to the younger generation.
In Cheshire, the festival has grown well beyond the family home. Temples and community halls host open events where everyone is welcome. Schools tell the stories of Rama and Sita, and local businesses often share sweets and greetings with colleagues. It’s not unusual now to see Diwali recognised in offices or even by local councils, adding a sense of inclusion and celebration across the county.
What makes Diwali special in 2025 is how it brings people together. Non-Asian neighbours happily join in, enjoying colourful light parades, Bollywoodinspired performances, and of course, the food. It’s a wonderful way to experience the region’s growing cultural mix and celebrate something joyful side by side.

Diwali, also called Deepavali or Deepawali, is the Hindu festival of lights, with variations celebrated in other Indian religions such as Jainism and Sikhism. It symbolises the spiritual victory of Dharma over Adharma, light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance.
For younger generations, Diwali blends old and new. Social media buzzes with reels of rangoli patterns, fusion recipes, and stylish outfits mixing silk with contemporary designs. It’s a way of saying, “This is who we are” – proud of heritage, yet happily rooted in Cheshire life.
There’s also a strong sense of giving back. Many community groups use Diwali as a time to fundraise for local charities or support causes abroad. The festival’s central message – that light should overcome darkness – feels just as powerful when it shines through kindness and generosity.
So, what does Diwali mean to Asians in Cheshire today? It’s heritage kept alive, traditions shared, and friendships deepened. It’s a moment to celebrate identity while also inviting others to join in the fun. Above all, it’s about lighting up homes, hearts, and communities with joy and hope for the year ahead.

NEWQUAY ADVENTURE AT EVERY TURN
There are few places in the UK that capture the imagination quite like Newquay. Perched on Cornwall’s dramatic Atlantic coast, this seaside town blends rugged natural beauty with a warm, welcoming charm. For a first-time visitor, the impact is immediate – Newquay is both breathtakingly wild... and effortlessly inviting. I discovered that on my very first visit.

Fistral Beach, the jewel in Newquay’s crown, is where the town truly reveals its magic. It’s world-renowned as the heart of British surfing – a place where the sea takes centre stage. Golden sands stretch as far as the eye can see, bordered by headlands rising proudly against the skyline. Waves roll in with power and purpose, drawing surfers from across the globe. Yet, the beach itself feels spacious enough for everyone – families building sandcastles, couples

strolling hand in hand, and travellers simply gazing at the horizon.
What makes this coastline unforgettable is its balance of energy and tranquillity. On the sand, there’s a buzz: surfboards tucked under arms, wetsuits glistening in the sun, cafés serving steaming hot chocolate and freshly caught seafood. But just steps away, climb onto the cliffs, and the world feels completely different. Here, the air is fresher,

the views wider, and the pace slower. From the cliff paths, the Atlantic seems endless – broken only by seabirds wheeling above, and the white spray of waves crashing against rock.
Perched on those rugged cliffs, The Headland Hotel and Spa adds a touch of grandeur. This iconic Victorian building is as much a part of Newquay’s landscape as the waves themselves. Inside, it blends timeless elegance with contemporary comfort –

stylish rooms, award-winning dining, and one of Cornwall’s finest spas. Whether you’re unwinding in the serene pool with sea views, indulging in a luxury treatment, or sipping a drink while watching surfers below – The Headland perfectly captures the spirit of relaxation... against a backdrop of wild Atlantic drama.
Newquay’s scenery is unapologetically rugged. Jagged cliffs, shaped by centuries of tides and storms, conceal hidden coves that promise discovery and seclusion. It’s this contrast – the bustling beach life below and the windswept drama above – that makes Newquay so unique.
Beyond the sand and surf, Newquay itself is full of surprises. The town has an easygoing rhythm. Streets lined with surf shops, cafés, and traditional Cornish bakeries hum with life. Days are lively, evenings slower, perfect for watching the sun dip into the sea. Dining ranges from fresh fish and chips on a sea wall, to contemporary restaurants serving inventive takes on local produce.

And no visit to Cornwall is complete without tasting its most iconic culinary creation: the Cornish pasty. More than just a snack, it’s a taste of history. Traditionally filled with beef, potato, swede, and onion, it was designed for Cornish tin miners, with its thick crimped edge. Today, local bakeries

serve both classic and inventive variations – steak and Stilton, chicken and chorizo, or sweet apple and cinnamon – each bite connecting visitors to Cornwall’s heritage.
Sampling a hot pasty while watching the waves crash on Fistral Beach feels quintessentially Newquay. Flaky pastry, savoury filling, salty sea air, and the rhythm of the Atlantic – every sense delights. For first-time visitors, it’s not just food –it’s a connection to place and culture, a moment to pause and appreciate the landscape around you.
For those seeking more than relaxation, Newquay offers adventure at every turn.
Surf schools welcome beginners, coastal trails tempt walkers with panoramic views, and changing tides create landscapes that shift with every visit. Yet even for those content to simply sit back and breathe it all in, the town delivers an unforgettable sense of freedom.
To visit Newquay and Fistral Beach for the first time is to discover a place where nature still calls the shots. It’s a place of contrasts: wild cliffs and gentle sands, roaring surf and quiet moments, lively streets and peaceful coves. Add the indulgence of The Headland Hotel, and the simple joy of a warm Cornish pasty – and suddenly, it’s clear why Newquay leaves such a lasting impression. From the sound of the waves, to the scent of salt in the air, Cornwall’s rugged beauty and rich heritage create memories that linger long after you’ve left.

WHY YOUR MIND
DESERVES THE SAME CARE AS YOUR BODY
When we think about health and wellness, we often picture the physical. A GP for our medical concerns. A dentist for our teeth. An osteopath for our aches and pains. But there is one part of our health that too often gets left out of the conversation, our mental health.
The truth is, everyone has mental health. Just like physical health, it rises and falls. A stressful workload, money worries, lack of sleep, even the background hum of everyday pressure can all have an impact. For some, the dip is temporary. For others, it slides into anxiety, depression, or burnout. This is where mental health becomes mental illness, and where the real struggle begins.
Yet while most of us will happily brush our teeth twice a day or book a check up when our back twinges, how often do we check in with our minds? We wait until crisis point before paying attention, when in reality, mental health needs the same consistent care as the rest of our body.
Daily care for your mind
Looking after your mental health does not have to be complicated. Small, simple acts can make a huge difference when practiced regularly:
● Movement: It is not just about fitness. A walk, stretching, or even dancing around the kitchen can lift your mood.
● Rest: Protect your sleep. No one performs well when running on empty.
● Connection: Make space for real conversations where you feel heard, not judged.
● Boundaries: Saying no when needed protects your energy and avoids the slow creep of stress. Think of these as brushing your mind’s teeth, daily practices that prevent bigger problems from building up.
Why men often struggle in silence
In my work across Cheshire and beyond, I meet many men who look successful on the surface but are fighting quiet battles inside. They carry stress, pressure, and loneliness, but do not feel able to talk about it. Often, they keep pushing until something breaks.
For years, mental health support has been built around reliving trauma or revisiting painful memories. For many men, that feels like opening a wound they would rather avoid. What I offer through my programme, Rewired for Men, is a different path. Instead of focusing on the past, it is about rewiring the unconscious patterns and stories that keep men stuck, so they can move forward with clarity, presence, and confidence.
Health is never just physical
Mental health is not separate from physical health. It is the foundation that everything else sits on. When you take care of your mind, your body benefits. Your relationships strengthen. Your decisions improve. You feel more present in your own life, not just surviving it.
So, as you read about how a GP can help your medical needs, how a dentist protects your smile, or how an osteopath supports your body, remember that your mind deserves the same attention.
Mental health is not a luxury. It is a daily necessity, the missing piece that completes the picture of true wellness.

For many, the thought of leaving home when frailty or illness takes hold can be distressing. Traditional visiting care may not offer the reassurance or companionship people require to meet their care needs. Live-in care is a simple, flexible alternative — where a professional carer moves in to provide one-to-one support around the clock.

I started Promedica24 Homecare Cheshire because I’ve seen first-hand how difficult it can be when someone you love starts to struggle. Maybe Mum or Dad are becoming frail and having falls, or your partner is living with Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s or another life-changing illness. You do your best to cope, but it can quickly become overwhelming — emotionally and physically. I wanted to create a service that takes that pressure away and brings comfort, reassurance and dignity back into people’s lives.
Our live-in care service is all about helping people stay where they’re happiest — at home. Home isn’t just four walls; it’s memories, routines, the smell of your own kitchen, the garden you’ve tended for years, the neighbours who’ve become friends. Leaving that behind can be heartbreaking. Live-in care means you don’t have to.
A professional carer moves in to provide 24hour support — helping with personal care, medication, meals, and daily tasks, or simply offering companionship and a friendly face over a cup of
tea. It’s flexible, personal and focused entirely on the individual. Most importantly, it gives families peace of mind knowing their loved one is safe and well cared for.
I know that talking about care can be hard. It’s often an emotional conversation that families put off until a crisis hits. My promise is to make things simple, clear and stress-free. When you call, I’ll listen to your situation and give honest advice — no sales talk, just guidance you can trust. We can visit you, carry out an assessment, and have the right care package in place within a few days.
At Promedica24 Cheshire, we handpick our carers carefully for their skills, warmth and integrity. The carer-client bond is all important to us. We’re fully regulated by the Care Quality Commission, so you can rest assured that our service meets the highest standards of safety and professionalism. For me, this isn’t just a business — it’s a way to make a real difference. Everyone deserves to feel cared for, valued and independent, even when life becomes more difficult. With the right support, home really can be the best place to live.

FINDING THE BALANCE

Mary had lived in her countryside cottage near Northwich since the 1960s, when she and her husband Will raised five children there. After Will passed away, the home became Mary’s sanctuary, full of memories. But in her early 80s, her daughter Megan began to notice signs that something was wrong: misplaced belongings, repeated stories, and forgotten names.
With the support of her brother Jacob, Megan tried to keep things running smoothly – arranging a cleaner, gardener, and cooked meals. But when Mary had a frightening fall in her garden and was later diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, it became clear she needed more help than family alone could provide.
Megan and Jacob faced a difficult question familiar to many families: how to keep their mum safe while respecting her independence? A care home didn’t feel right—Mary was happiest in her own surroundings, enjoying her routines, her favourite music, and a cup of tea with biscuits.
That’s when they discovered Promedica24. Live-in care was a new concept for the family, but it proved to be the perfect solution. A dedicated carer moved into Mary’s home, ensuring she could continue to live safely in the place she loved most. Her routines were supported, her independence

preserved, and her children could finally feel reassured. They became sons and daughters again, once the burden of professional care had been removed from their shoulders.
With Promedica24, Mary’s family found the balance they were searching for: compassionate, professional care without losing the comfort of home. Today, Mary enjoys her days with confidence, dignity, and companionship, while Megan and Jacob have peace of mind knowing she is safe and content.
If you or someone you love is facing similar challenges, Promedica24’s fully managed, CQC-registered live-in care can swiftly provide the support you and your Mum need.

A CLEARER VISION FOR THE GOLDEN TRIANGLE
With Altaf Ariff

I recently had the pleasure of meeting Altaf Ariff, the optician who has taken over Fox-Stevens in Handforth. From the moment we sat down, it was clear that this was not just about running an optician’s practice – it was about a genuine commitment to community wellbeing and a vision for eye health that stretches far beyond the test room.
Altaf spoke passionately about his responsibility to the ‘Golden Triangle’ community of Handforth, Wilmslow, and Alderley Edge. For him, being a local optician is not simply a profession, but a privilege. “Eyesight is central to everyday life,” he explained, “and yet so often we take it for granted. My role is to make sure that people not only see clearly but also feel cared for, understood, and supported.”
One of the first things Altaf has introduced is a more personalised approach to eye examinations.
Rather than rushing through appointments, he takes the time to explain results in plain, reassuring

language. Patients are encouraged to ask questions, explore different options, and leave with confidence that their eye health has been thoroughly considered. He believes that every set of eyes tells a story, and each person deserves the time and attention to have theirs listened to.
Working alongside Altaf is his assistant and receptionist, Jo Hall, whose friendly professionalism ensures every patient feels welcome from the

a perfect complement to Altaf’s clinical expertise. Technology also plays a key part in his vision for the practice. Fox-Stevens now offers advanced imaging equipment, capable of detecting early signs of glaucoma, macular degeneration, and other conditions long before symptoms appear. Altaf is determined that his patients benefit from hospital-level screening within the comfort of their local opticians. Preventative care, he explains, is vital: “The earlier we spot changes, the better we can protect vision for the future.”

For those unable to visit the practice easily, Altaf also offers home and care-home visits. He recognises that good vision is essential at every stage of life, and this service ensures that older residents or those with limited mobility can still access high-quality eye care without leaving their homes.
Fashion and function, too, have their place in Altaf’s vision. He has expanded the range of frames at Fox-Stevens, offering styles that balance practicality with personal expression. From classic

designs to modern statement pieces, every recommendation is guided by comfort, lifestyle, and budget. He sees glasses not just as medical devices, but as part of someone’s identity and confidence. What struck me most during our conversation was Altaf’s genuine warmth and the pride he takes in being part of this community. He isn’t simply providing a service – he is building relationships based on trust. In his own words: “Looking after someone’s eyesight is a privilege. My goal is to make sure every person who walks through our doors—or whom I visit in their home – feels valued, understood, and supported for the long term.”
With this fresh energy and dedication, FoxStevens under Altaf’s leadership, with Jo Hall by his side, looks set to become more than an optician –it will be a hub of eye health, style, and community care for our Handforth community and the wider Golden Triangle area.

More and more private GPs are looking for ways to offer their patients truly joined-up care. That’s where osteopathy fits in beautifully. Many patients seen by private GPs are struggling with back or neck pain, headaches, postural strain, or mobility issues. While the GP provides diagnosis and medical guidance, osteopathy can support recovery with gentle, hands-on treatment and tailored advice to aid long-term wellbeing.
Being mobile means I bring the treatment directly to the patient — whether they’re recovering from surgery, managing a chronic condition, or simply prefer home-based care. It removes the stress of travel and creates a more relaxed environment for treatment, helping patients get the most out of every session.
For GPs, this partnership offers peace of mind. I provide clear communication and progress updates (with patient consent), ensuring care remains consistent and collaborative. Some GPs refer patients informally, while others include my

MORE ABOUT CARING TOGETHER FROM PRIVATE GP DR BRUCE JOBLING AS TASHA AND JACQUI OF CGT VISIT HIM AT HIS PRIVATE SURGERY IN HALE, AND ASK...
What first inspired you to become a doctor, and what made you choose to work as a private GP?
BJ: I was inspired to become a doctor by a desire to problem solve, making a meaningful difference in people’s lives through health. I chose to work as a private GP as it allows me to provide a more personalized care, offering the time to listen to and support my patients This allows me to build stronger, lasting relationships with them.
What kinds of health worries do people most often come to you with?
BJ: People most often come to me with common issues such as infections and digestive problems, but

also concerns about chronic conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure or simply for reassurance. Mental health and general well being concerns are also increasingly common.
How is seeing a private GP different for patients compared to visiting their local NHS doctor?
BJ: Seeing a private GP means shorter wait times, longer appointments, and more flexibility in scheduling. Patients experience a more personalised approach, with time to discuss multiple concerns in one visit. There’s quicker access to tests, referrals, and follow-up care.
What simple things do you recommend people do every day to stay healthier and feel better?
BJ: I recommend staying active with at least 30 minutes of movement, eating a balanced diet rich in whole foods, staying hydrated, getting 7–8 hours of quality sleep, and taking time to relax or practice mindfulness. Limiting screen

time, connecting with others, and spending time outdoors also make a big difference to both physical and mental health.
So, how interesting? As healthcare continues to evolve, the value of joined-up thinking between different practitioners becomes ever clearer. When private clinicians, GPs, and osteopaths share knowledge and work side by side, patients benefit from a more rounded, personal approach to care. It’s a partnership that not only improves individual outcomes but also strengthens the wellbeing of entire communities. I’m sure we’ll be hearing much more about the correlation between the services that private clinicians, GPs, and osteopaths provide for their local communities in the near future.’’

CHESHIRE’S TRUSTED FAMILY PRACTICE
In the vibrant village of Alderley Edge, dental care takes on a whole new meaning with Dr Daniel Flynn – affectionately known as “Dentist Dan” – the friendly face behind Alderley Edge Dental. As a family-run private practice, Dan and his team combine advanced treatments with a genuinely caring, patient-first approach. Their focus? Helping every patient feel confident, comfortable, and well cared for – one smile at a time.
JP: You’re often described as having a calm and reassuring approach – how do you help nervous patients feel at ease in the chair?
DD: For us, it’s all about taking the time to really get to know each patient and understand what makes them feel comfortable. We have a dedicated Patient Care Coordinator, Gemma, who’s always on hand to answer questions and guide patients through every step of their journey. Our friendly front-ofhouse team plays a big part too – a warm welcome goes a long way. For anyone who feels especially anxious, we also offer intravenous sedation, which helps make treatment a completely relaxed and stress-free experience.

Jacqui Priestley spends 5 Minutes with Dentist Dan of Alderley Edge Dental

JP: Being a family-run practice must bring a special dynamic – how does that influence the atmosphere and care at Alderley Edge Dental?
DD: Alderley Edge Dental is owned and run by myself and my wife, Lucinda. We’ve built the practice on the same values we hold as a family –kindness, communication, and support. We try to create a positive, approachable environment where the team feels valued and encouraged. We love celebrating staff achievements, both big and small.
As a family-run practice, one of the best parts is looking after local families and watching their children grow up. We often joke that we’ve seen some of our young patients through every stage — from losing their first tooth for the Tooth Fairy to now debating how much the going rate should be with inflation!
JP: You’re based right in the heart of Alderley Edge – what do you love most about being part of this community?
DD: It’s the village feel that makes Alderley Edge so special. Everyone supports one another, and there’s a genuine sense of pride in the local community. We love getting involved in village celebrations and supporting local charities – we make a donation for every Google review we receive, and we’re proud to support the annual Silk Radio Toy Appeal as an official drop-off location again this year.
Of course, there’s no hiding in a village like ours – patients often spot us doing our weekly shop in Waitrose, so there’s no escaping a friendly chat about teeth in the biscuit aisle!
JP: How important is the link between oral health and overall wellbeing – and do you think people realise how connected they are?
DD: They’re completely linked, and more people are beginning to understand that now. For example, gum disease has been shown to increase the risk of heart disease, and there’s growing research into how menopause can affect gum healthtoo. During pregnancy, hormonal changes can make gums more sensitive, so dental care is especially important at that stage.
There’s even evidence of a connection between dementia and oral health, showing just how vital it is to look after your mouth as part of your overall wellbeing. Your smile really is a window into your general health.
JP: Your team offers a wide range of specialist treatments – how do these areas of expertise and modern technology come together to benefit patients?
DD: We’re really proud of the expertise within our team — everyone brings something different to the table. We have clinicians who focus on Invisalign, dental implants, root canal treatments, and cosmetic dentistry, which means we can look after almost every aspect of a patient’s dental journey under one roof.
What ties it all together is our investment in cuttingedge digital technology. We use 3D scanning and fully digital workflows, allowing us to plan treatments with incredible accuracy while keeping the patient
experience smooth and comfortable. From virtually designing new smiles to creating precision-guided implant placements, digital dentistry has really transformed the level of care we can provide — and our patients love being part of that process.
JP: Outside of the surgery, how do you like to unwind or spend time when you’re not caring for patients?
DD: I love spending time with my twin girls, who keep me on my toes! I’ve recently taken up padel, which is a great way to switch off and stay active. I’m also a long-suffering Manchester United fan, so watching them lose has become a character-building hobby.
Whenever we can, we love escaping to the Algarve –Portugal is a really special place for our family. And as for golf, let’s just say I spend more time looking for the ball than hitting it!

Get

Get it right, and everything flows more smoothly. Get it wrong, and you may end up with unnecessary stress. The good news is, with a little planning (and some insider know-how), you can keep your renovation on track financially and still bring your vision to life.
Here are my tried-and-tested budgeting tips to help you navigate your project with confidence.
1. Nail Down Your Budget Early
Before you pick paint colours or browse tiles, get really clear on what you can spend. Your budget is the foundation for every decision that follows – whether it’s about design, materials, or labour. Think about the scale of your renovation, the level of finish you’d like, and any specialist work you might need, such as plumbing, electrics, or structural changes. The earlier you set your figure, the easier it will be to stick to it.
BUDGETING FOR YOUR HOME RENOVATION: TIPS FROM AN EXPERIENCED ARCHITECT
by Dan Lancaster
Taking on a home renovation can feel like a real adventure – equal parts exciting and, let’s be honest, a little overwhelming. One of the biggest factors that can make or break your project? The budget.

2. Separate Needs from Wants

It’s tempting to want everything, but prioritising is key. Start by writing down all the things you’d love to include, then separate them into needs and wants. Needs are the non-negotiables, such as fixing a leaky roof or updating unsafe wiring. Wants are the nice-to-haves, like underfloor heating or a designer light fitting. When costs creep up – and they often do – this makes it much easier to see where you can compromise without affecting safety or functionality.
3. Shop Around for Quotes
Never go with the first price you’re given. Take the time to get a few quotes from different contractors and suppliers so you can compare properly. Don’t just look at the total cost –check what’s included, the quality of materials, and the contractor’s track record. An architect can be a huge help here, recommending trusted people and making sure you’re comparing like for like.
4. Have a Contingency Cushion
Even the smoothest renovations can throw up surprises – hidden damp, old wiring, or foundations that need extra work. To save yourself stress later, set aside between 10 and 20 percent of your budget for those “just in case” moments. You’ll thank yourself for it if something unexpected comes up.
5. Keep an Eye on Spending
It’s surprisingly easy for costs to sneak up on you. Regularly check in with your budget as the project moves forward. Whether you prefer a simple spreadsheet, an app, or project management software, the key is to track every expense and compare it against your original plan. A little time spent on admin now saves a lot of stress later.
6. Know Where to Spend & Where to Save
Not everything needs to be top of the range, but cutting corners in the wrong places can cause problems down the line. Always invest in the

essentials – the roof, the foundations, the electrics, and the plumbing. Once those are taken care of, you can balance the rest of your budget with clever design choices and mid-range finishes.
7. Consider Breaking It Into Phases
If your dream project feels just out of reach, don’t panic. You don’t have to do everything at once. Splitting the renovation into phases allows you to spread the costs over time and gives you the flexibility to adjust as life and finances change.
Final Thoughts
Renovating your home is a journey, and like all journeys, it’s smoother with a good map. By setting a clear budget, prioritising wisely, planning for surprises, and keeping track along the way, you’ll give yourself the best chance of success. Most importantly, don’t forget to enjoy the process. After all, you’re creating a home that truly reflects you.
My purpose is to create a home that reflects you, your personality, and your needs and wants.
As an architect and garden designer, I’m always thinking about the connection between inside and outside.

Outside space is the greatest asset of your home, so the inside should make the most of the views and connections to it.
Your home is your place in the world, it should

CELEBRATE AUTUMN’S BEAUTY IN ORANGE
Orange has long been associated with warmth, energy, and comfort, which is why it naturally becomes the colour of choice for home interiors during autumn. As the seasons shift and the days grow shorter, people instinctively look for ways to create a sense of cosiness indoors.
Orange captures the very essence of autumn: the glow of turning leaves, the richness of pumpkins, and the warmth of a crackling fire. It bridges the gap between the vibrancy of summer and the calm, reflective tones of winter, making it an ideal transitional colour for this time of year.
Psychologically, orange is uplifting and welcoming. It encourages enthusiasm, positivity, and togetherness, making it perfect for dining rooms, kitchens, and living spaces where people gather. Unlike red, which can be overpowering, or yellow, which may lack depth, orange offers a balance – energetic yet grounding.
From a design perspective, orange works beautifully with the seasonal palette. Shades of burnt orange, rust, terracotta, and amber mirror the natural changes outdoors, connecting the home environment to the landscape. Orange cushions, throws, or ceramics echo

autumn leaves and harvest produce, while copper and brass accents enhance the seasonal glow.
Orange also pairs seamlessly with other autumnal shades—deep browns, forest greens,

warm neutrals, and mustard yellows – creating interiors that feel layered and inviting. Terracotta walls with cream furnishings or orange-toned upholstery with wood and earthy ceramics showcase its versatility.
Symbolically, orange is tied to autumn traditions. It represents abundance and harvest, echoing pumpkins, squash, and spices that dominate seasonal food and celebrations. More than a style choice, it reflects rituals like Halloween and Thanksgiving, where the colour naturally takes

Ultimately, orange is the colour of autumn interiors because it embodies the mood of the season. It provides warmth against cooling weather, vibrancy as the year winds down, and comfort in the spaces where we spend the most time. Whether bold or subtle, orange transforms homes into havens that celebrate

WHY MOVE TO ALDERLEY EDGE?
LIFE ON THE EDGE OF CHARM AND COMMUNITY
When you first arrive in Alderley Edge, it’s hard not to be captivated. Nestled at the base of a striking red sandstone escarpment known simply as The Edge, the village feels like it has leapt straight from a storybook. The ancient woods rise behind the houses, their winding paths inviting morning walkers, families with dogs, and runners chasing the first light of day. From the top, the Cheshire Plain stretches endlessly, a patchwork of fields and villages bathed in golden sunlight.
For many, the decision to move here begins with a desire for a slower pace, a balance of nature and nurture. Alderley Edge offers the rare combination of village charm with a touch of sophistication. Strolling along London Road, you’ll find elegant Georgian and Victorian buildings housing boutique shops, artisanal cafés, and restaurants where locals gather for a leisurely lunch. Yet despite its affluence, there is a warmth here, a sense of welcome that makes newcomers feel part of the community from day one.
Families are drawn to Alderley Edge not just for its scenery but for its exceptional schools. Alderley Edge Community Primary School has been nurturing children for generations, instilling curiosity and

confidence in its pupils. For older girls, the Alderley Edge School for Girls offers a modern, expansive learning environment, blending academics, arts, and sport. The Ryleys School provides a strong start for younger children, setting the stage for success in later years. Parents often find themselves walking to school with their children through leafy lanes, exchanging greetings with neighbours who quickly become friends.
Life here is closely intertwined with the outdoors. The Edge itself is more than just a backdrop – it’s a living part of the village. In spring, the woods burst into green; in autumn, the leaves blaze with colour.
Birdsong accompanies morning coffees on garden terraces, and weekends are often spent exploring trails, spotting wildlife, or simply watching the sunset over the rolling plains. There’s a grounding rhythm to life here, a connection to the seasons and the natural world that city dwellers often long for.
Yet Alderley Edge is more than its beauty. The community runs deep. Village events, local gatherings, and charitable initiatives bring people together in a way that feels genuine rather than

staged. Whether it’s a summer fête, a harvest festival, or a coffee morning at the village hall, there’s always an opportunity to meet neighbours, share stories, and feel part of something larger. It’s this sense of belonging that keeps many families rooted here for generations.
Welcome to Sylk Flooring. Transform your home with our range of flooring options, from carpets to Karndean, and LVT to Engineered Wood we have you covered.
Discover complete flooring solutions from SYLK FLOORING in Macclesfield, Cheshire. We supply and install domestic flooring for local clients and offer commercial flooring contracts throughout the UK.

Of course, life in Alderley Edge comes with its luxuries. Homes range from quaint cottages to grand family residences, often with gardens that echo the surrounding woods. For those seeking convenience, Manchester is only a short drive or train ride away, offering city amenities without the daily rush. Here, you can enjoy both privacy and connection, calm and culture, community and choice.
Moving to Alderley Edge isn’t just about a change of address; it’s a lifestyle decision. It’s choosing morning walks through golden woods over crowded streets, boutique cafés over chain coffee shops, strong schools and safe streets over long commutes. It’s embracing a village that celebrates nature, nurtures its young, and fosters a true sense of community.
Here, life is lived on the edge – both literally and figuratively – but it’s an edge filled with beauty, warmth, and opportunity. For those who make the move, Alderley Edge isn’t just a place to live. It’s a place to belong.

AUTUMN ELEGANCE THE SMART SELLER’S ADVANTAGE
How thoughtful staging protects your property’s value and attracts motivated buyers before the year’s end.
When it comes to selling a home, presentation is never optional. It is the unspoken language that helps buyers fall in love with a property before they even cross the threshold. While spring and summer are often hailed as the prime seasons to sell, autumn is, in fact, one of the most powerful (yet most overlooked) times to bring a home to market. With the right staging, sellers can harness the richness of the season and create an atmosphere that resonates with buyers looking to move quickly before the year draws to a close.
A motivated market
As the golden tones of late summer give way to crisp mornings and russet leaves, the housing market quietly stirs with renewed energy. Buyers who paused their search for holidays or

family commitments return with sharper focus. Many are determined to secure their next home before Christmas or to start the new year settled and stress-free. Listing a property in autumn places sellers directly in front of this motivated audience. A staged home, beautifully presented, meets them with the emotional pull that transforms casual viewings into confident offers.
A season made for warmth
Autumn is nature’s season of hospitality. It evokes images of soft throws, candlelit corners and the gentle glow of lamplight on polished wood.
Staging in this period is about weaving those sensory cues into a property, so viewers immediately feel the embrace of home.
Velvet cushions in deep jewel tones (think garnet red, forest green, or sapphire blue), lend richness to living spaces. Cashmere or merino wool throws, casually draped across an armchair, suggest comfort without clutter. Rugs in natural fibres such as sisal or wool anchor rooms with warmth underfoot. By layering textures, staging creates depth: the contrast of smooth leather against linen upholstery, or the shimmer of silk beside matte ceramics, captures attention in a way that photographs beautifully and feels inviting in person.
Lighting, too, becomes a star player. As daylight shortens, well-placed lamps with warm bulbs create pools of ambient light that soften shadows and add intimacy. Statement pendants in brushed brass or smoked glass elevate dining spaces, while clusters of candles (unscented, to avoid overwhelming the senses), flicker with understated elegance. Mirrors, positioned with intent, not only amplify natural light but also expand the sense of space, ensuring rooms feel bright and expansive even on the greyest November day.
Standing out online and in person
With so many buyers beginning their search on property portals, first impressions are often formed on a screen. Staging ensures every photograph captures the home at its most flattering angle. A thoughtfully styled hallway with a console table,
vase of seasonal foliage, and soft runner sets the tone instantly. Bedrooms with crisp linen sheets, layered with tactile throws and cushions, photograph as both serene and aspirational. Kitchens styled with natural textures (oak boards, ceramic bowls, a loaf of artisan bread), subtly hint at a lifestyle buyers crave.
Protecting your home’s value
One of the hidden advantages of staging in autumn is financial. Properties that linger on the market often tempt sellers into price reductions; a significant cost when compared with the modest investment of professional staging. By presenting a home at its very best from the outset, sellers invite stronger offers and avoid the downward spiral of price cuts. In prestige markets especially, perception is everything: a staged home signals care, quality and desirability.
A smoother move
Selling a home is often an emotional journey, but staging removes a layer of stress. Professionals handle the entire transformation from sourcing furniture, curating accessories and dressing
each space to maximise appeal. For sellers, it means less worry and more confidence. For buyers, it means stepping into a property where they can immediately imagine life unfolding, whether that’s gathering around the fire on a crisp evening or hosting friends in a warmly lit dining room.
Harnessing the season with Harrison Home Staging
At Harrison Home Staging, we specialise in capturing the unique charm of each season. Autumn allows us to layer fabrics, textures and lighting in ways that celebrate the cosiness buyers yearn for at this time of year. Our full staging packages and partial styling services are entirely hands-free, ensuring homes not only sell faster but often achieve stronger offers.
As the year draws to a close, autumn offers an exquisite opportunity: the chance to present your property at its most inviting and to capture the hearts of buyers ready to act. With the right staging, your home won’t just be seen; it will be remembered.

THAT’S ENOUGH GARDENING FOR THIS YEAR
Ah, late autumn – that bittersweet moment when your garden finally stops demanding daily attention, yet still insists on a bit of fuss before it nods off for winter. The leaves are falling faster than you can rake them, the compost bin is heaving, and the air smells faintly of bonfires and damp gloves. But fear not – with a few well-timed jobs, you’ll set yourself up nicely for spring (and earn a guilt-free rest on the sofa).
First up: the great tidy-up. Rake those leaves off the lawn before they turn it into a soggy brown mess. Don’t throw them away though – bag them up and let nature turn them into leaf mould. It’s the gardener’s version of slow cooking: a year later, you’ll have rich, crumbly compost worth its weight in gold.
Next, sort out those flower borders. Pull out the weeds (they never seem to take a holiday), and cut back perennials that have flopped. But leave a few seed heads for the birds – they appreciate the free buffet, and you’ll enjoy watching their feathery antics on chilly mornings.
Soil care is the secret to smug gardening in spring. Spread a layer of compost or mulch over your beds to protect roots from frost and feed the worms. If you’re feeling energetic, dig in some

well-rotted manure – it’s the kind of “me-time” your soil deserves.
Bulb planting is a must-do. Pop in daffodils, tulips and crocus for a burst of colour when you need it most. And if you’ve got any bare patches in the garden, now’s a great time to plant shrubs or trees.

They’ll quietly settle their roots while you’re inside drinking hot chocolate.
Don’t neglect your lawn. Give it a final mow if it’s still growing, rake out moss, and trim the edges for a tidy look. Then feed it with an autumn lawn mix to keep it strong through winter – it’s like giving it a nice warm jumper.
Finally, show your tools some love. Clean, oil, and store them properly – future you will be grateful. And if you’ve got pots of tender plants, bring them into shelter or wrap them up snugly in fleece.
Then, with everything tucked in and tidy, pour yourself something warm (or strong), admire your handiwork, and declare, “That’s enough gardening for this year!” – because even Golden Triangle gardeners deserve a well-earned rest.
Graham, our Golden Triangle Gardener, is never happier than when up to his elbows in compost. He believes every good day starts with a brew, a pair of muddy boots, and a plan for the borders.

PET PARTNERS
HOW TO LOOK AFTER DIFFERENT PETS AT HOME

Pets aren’t just animals – they’re teammates in everyday life. Whether it’s a dog who gets you moving, a cat who hogs your bed, or a hamster running marathons at midnight, pets add character, comfort, and chaos to a household. But here’s the deal: being a pet owner isn’t just about snapping cute photos for your socials. It’s about stepping up and making sure your pet’s needs come before your own convenience. Ready to be a proper pet partner? Let’s break it down.
Dogs: The Loyal Legends
Dogs are social butterflies and thrive on attention, exercise, and routine. Walks aren’t optional –they’re essential. Think of it as daily cardio, for both you and them. Keep mealtimes regular, and never underestimate the power of playtime (a game of tug can fix a bad mood in seconds).
Pro tip: Always keep fresh water nearby –dogs can overheat fast after exercise.
Cats: The Chill Roommates
Cats act independent, but they notice everything. They need scratching posts (unless you’re cool with shredded furniture), clean litter trays, and
Top 5 things you should never feed your pet
● Chocolate toxic for dogs and cats
● Grapes & raisins can damage dogs’ kidneys
● Onions & garlic dangerous for many animals
● Avocado not safe for birds or rabbits
● Human junk food salty crisps, sweets, and fast food are a no-go
Rule of thumb: If you’re not 100% sure, don’t share your snack
cosy napping spots. Grooming is important too, especially if your cat has long fur. Did you know? Cats purr not only when they’re happy but also when they’re trying to self-soothe.
Rabbits: Quiet but Quirky
Rabbits aren’t cage decorations—they’re active, social, and need space to explore. Hay is their main food, and it also keeps their teeth in check. Veggies are a nice bonus, but sweets (even fruit in big amounts) aren’t great for them.
Tip: Rabbits often prefer having a buddy, so consider keeping them in pairs.

Signs your pet might be bored
Pets can’t say “I’m bored,” but they show it in funny (and sometimes destructive) ways. Watch out for:
● Dogs chewing shoes or digging in the garden
● Cats attacking curtains or pacing the room
● Rabbits biting cage bars or digging obsessively
● Birds plucking their own feathers.
● Hamsters gnawing constantly without stopping
Fix it: Add more toys, create a play area, or spend extra time interacting with them
The “Are You Ready for a Pet?” Checklist
Before getting a pet, ask yourself:
● Do I have time every day to feed, play, and clean up?
● Am I ready for years of responsibility (dogs can live 10-15 years, cats even longer)?
● Can my family or housemates help when I’m busy?
● Do I have money for food, vet visits, and emergencies?
● Am I choosing the right pet for my lifestyle (e.g., an active dog if I love the outdoors, or a low-maintenance fish if I’m always busy)?
If you said “yes” to all of these –congratulations, you’re ready to be a true pet partner
Hamsters: Small but Mighty
Hamsters are basically night owls. They’ll run, chew, and explore while you’re asleep, so don’t expect midnight peace. Give them tunnels and wheels for exercise, and handle them gently so they get used to you.
Heads-up: Most hamsters prefer to live alone – they’re tiny but territorial.
Fish: Calm Vibes Only
Fish tanks are like living art, but they still take effort. Clean water is key, and filters are non-negotiable. Overfeeding is a rookie mistake – too much food harms both the fish and the tank. Fact check: Goldfish don’t have three-second memories. They can remember patterns for months!
Birds: Feathered Characters
From chatty budgies to whistling cockatiels, birds bring colour and sound to your life. They need roomy cages, perches, and toys to avoid boredom. Many birds love attention – some can even learn tricks or words.
Reminder: Birds should stretch their wings outside the cage in a safe space.
Reptiles: The Exotic Option
Lizards, snakes, and turtles are fascinating but high-maintenance. They usually need heated lamps, carefully controlled environments, and specialised diets. They’re not a “buy and forget” pet, so research is crucial.
How Much Time Do Pets Really Take?
● Dog: 1-2 hours of walks and play daily
● Cat: 20-30 minutes of play, plus litter box duty
● Rabbit: daily feeding, cage cleaning, and at least an hour of safe playtime
● Hamster: short handling sessions, cage cleaning weekly
● Fish: 10 minutes a day feeding, plus water checks
● Bird: several short play/ interaction sessions daily
● Reptiles: depends on the species, but expect daily tank checks and regular feeding
Owning a pet is like having a part-time job – you need to show up consistently
Fun Fact Round-Up
● A cat can jump up to six times its own body length
● Dogs can understand up to 200 words – some are basically furry toddlers
● Hamsters’ teeth never stop growing (that’s why they chew everything)
● Goldfish can live over 10 years with good care
● Some parrots can live as long as humans!
The Big Picture
Being a pet partner is about commitment. Pets can’t tell you when they’re hungry, bored, or unwell in words – they rely on your attention. In return, you get unconditional loyalty, daily laughs, and a bond like no other.
So whether you’re walking the dog, refilling the hamster’s water, or scooping out the fish tank, remember: it’s the small, consistent actions that make you a great pet partner. And honestly? There’s nothing cooler than being the person your pet completely trusts.
Caring for pets is more than a hobby – it’s a lifelong promise. Whether you’ve got a dog waiting by the door, a cat claiming your pillow, or a hamster powering through the night, every pet depends on you for love, safety, and consistency. The little things – fresh water, clean bedding, daily play – add up to a big difference in their happiness. When you step up as a responsible pet partner, you don’t just keep your animal healthy; you also build an unbreakable bond. In return, pets give you loyalty, laughter, and a kind of friendship that lasts a lifetime.

SAVING TIME & MONEY
Utility Warehouse (UW) is a UK-based provider that bundles your home services – energy, broadband, mobile, and insurance – into one simple monthly bill. By combining everything with one trusted supplier, customers save money, cut admin, and enjoy award-winning service, all with the support of Sue Murphy, a local UW Partner working in Cheshire’s Golden Triangle.
Sue, a local entrepreneur, avid networker, and supporter of our Golden Triangle community and charitable organisations, spoke with Jacqui Priestley about how she’s saving both money and time in her busy life.
JP: Sue, how does having all your household services on one monthly bill simplify your life compared to managing multiple providers?
S: It’s made things so much easier. Before, I had to keep track of different bills coming in at different times – broadband, mobile, energy, insurance –all from different companies. Now, it’s all rolled into one monthly bill, which means less paperwork and fewer things to worry about. It’s just more straightforward.
JP: What tasks or admin do you no longer need to worry about since switching to Utility Warehouse?
S: I don’t have to spend time logging into lots of different accounts or chasing up different customer service teams if there’s a problem. I used to set reminders to make sure I didn’t miss any payments or to compare deals when contracts ended –now that’s all taken care of in one place.
JP: How much time would you estimate you save each month by having just one provider for your essential services?
S: I’d say at least a couple of hours a month, maybe more. It might not sound like much, but over a year that really adds up – and it’s time I’d rather spend with my family or on things I actually enjoy.

JP: Has the simplicity of a single bill changed the way you budget or manage your household finances?
S: Absolutely. Having just one bill makes it much easier to see what’s going out each month. It’s helped with budgeting because there are no surprises –I know exactly what to expect and when. It’s more predictable, and that’s a big help when you’re trying to stay on top of your finances.
JP: Would you recommend a single-bill approach to others who feel overwhelmed by admin or short on time – and if so, why?
S: Yes, definitely. If you’re juggling work, family, and everything else life throws at you, it’s one less thing to worry about. It’s simple, stress-free, and it just makes sense. Anything that saves time and hassle is worth considering in my book.
JP: And you’re now a UW Partner –what does that entail?
S: Being a UW Partner is honestly one of the best decisions I’ve made! I get to help people save money on their everyday bills – energy, broadband, mobile, insurance – all in one go, which they absolutely
love. And the best bit? I earn an extra income just by chatting to people and showing them how simple it is. No hard sell, just genuine conversations (often over a cuppa!).
I work around my life, not the other way round –whether that’s a couple of hours in the evening or a free afternoon here and there. Plus, there’s loads of support, great training, and a brilliant community of Partners who cheer each other on. It’s flexible, it’s fun, and it feels fab to be making a difference while topping up my bank account. What’s not to love?

WHEN A STROKE STOLE DAD’S VOICEAND OUR CHOICE
Anne’s dad, Peter, was 67, living independently and working parttime. Out of the blue, he suffered a severe stroke that left him unable to communicate clearly or make decisions. Overnight, Peter lost the capacity to manage even the simplest parts of daily life.
Anne stepped in to help, but quickly ran into brick walls. Peter’s bank accounts were locked, meaning she couldn’t pay his bills or arrange home insurance. His mortgage was about to come off a fixed rate, pushing repayments onto a costly variable rate, but Anne couldn’t renegotiate with the lender because she had no legal authority. The stress mounted as letters and unpaid bills piled up. Worse still, Peter’s health care decisions became a battle. Anne knew he wanted to stay at home if at all possible, but the hospital discharge team insisted on a residential care placement. Without a Health and Welfare Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA), Anne had no power to challenge that choice on his behalf. In the end, Anne had to apply to the Court of Protection for permission to act - a slow, expensive, and emotionally draining process
that took nearly nine months. During that time, Peter was placed in a care home he wouldn’t have chosen, lost money to higher mortgage payments, and saw his savings drained by unpaid bills and interest charges. If Peter had made Lasting Powers of Attorney while he still had mental capacity, Anne could have stepped in straight away. She could have managed his money, protected the house, paid bills, kept up his mortgage, and made sure his care followed his wishes. A Property and Financial Affairs LPA would have given Anne the power to handle money, property, and mortgage arrangements. A Health and Welfare LPA would have allowed her to make medical and personal care decisions, including where he should live. Without them, families are left powerless just when their loved one needs them most.

THE JOY OF EATING WELL

As we grow older, good nutrition becomes one of the most powerful tools for maintaining health, energy, and independence. The body’s needs change with age — metabolism slows, muscle mass declines, and appetite often decreases. Yet, the need for essential nutrients becomes even greater. Eating well can help older adults manage chronic conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and osteoporosis, while also supporting brain function, immunity, and emotional wellbeing.
Protein plays a vital role in preserving muscle strength, which helps reduce the risk of falls and injuries. Lean meats, fish, eggs, and legumes are excellent choices, while calcium and vitamin D are equally important for maintaining bone density — found in dairy products, fortified cereals, and leafy greens. Hydration is another key factor. Many older people experience a reduced sense of thirst, so drinking water regularly — even when not feeling thirsty — is crucial for preventing dehydration, confusion, and fatigue.

Beyond the physical benefits, eating a balanced diet enhances quality of life. Sharing meals with friends or family provides valuable social interaction, helping to combat loneliness and depression. Nutrition, therefore, is about more than just food — it’s about vitality, connection, and wellbeing at every stage of life.
A vital part of that balanced diet comes from nature’s simplest offering: fruit. Fruits are packed with fibre, antioxidants, and essential nutrients that support overall health — especially for older adults. Their natural sweetness makes them an enjoyable way to meet daily nutritional needs without adding extra sugar.
Apples, for instance, are rich in soluble fibre, which helps to lower cholesterol and support digestive health. Bananas provide potassium, important for maintaining healthy blood pressure and muscle function. Berries such as blueberries and strawberries are loaded with antioxidants that help protect against memory decline and inflammation, while citrus fruits like oranges and grapefruits deliver a strong dose of vitamin C to boost the immune system and aid skin health.
Eating a variety of fruits daily can help maintain energy levels, improve hydration, and support healthy digestion. Whether added to porridge in the morning, blended into smoothies, or enjoyed as a light dessert, fruits are a delicious and simple way to nurture both body and mind. For older people, every colourful piece of fruit is a small step towards better health — a natural way to keep feeling vibrant, nourished, and connected to the joy of eating well.
Incorporating more fruit into your diet is simple –start your day with fruit-topped cereal or yogurt, snack on fresh berries or apple slices, and add fruit to salads or smoothies. Keep a colourful fruit bowl visible at home; it’s a natural reminder to reach for something fresh and nourishing every day.

HELPING MORE PEOPLE LIVE WITH DIGNITY, JOY & INDEPENDENCE
Our Golden Triangle and just down the road in Cheadle, is home to many caring people, but few embody that spirit quite likeTarek Ahmed , who runs a local care-at-home service called Heritage Healthcare. It is dedicated to supporting individuals and their families with kindness, dignity, and respect. CGT sat down with Tarek to find out what inspired him, how his team makes a difference every day, and why care-at-home is such a vital part of our community.
CGT: Tarek, what first inspired you to start a care-at-home business, and why did you choose to do it here?
T: I’ve always believed that the true measure of a community is how we look after one another, particularly those who are most vulnerable. My inspiration came from wanting to create a service where people could receive exceptional care while staying in the comfort of their own homes. The Golden Triangle and Cheadle felt like the perfect place – it’s a close-knit, caring community, and I wanted to build something that could give back to the area I’ve come to know and love.
CGT: For those who may not know, how does care-at-home support differ from traditional residential care?
T: The biggest difference is that our clients remain in their own familiar surroundings. That means they keep their independence, their routines, and their sense of identity, all while receiving the tailored support they need. Unlike residential care, which often requires a big life adjustment, care-at-home is designed to fit seamlessly into people’s existing lives, whether that’s a few hours of companionship a week or more regular daily support.
CGT: What do you feel makes your team stand out in the way you deliver care and companionship to clients?
T: I’m incredibly proud of our team. Every member shares the same values of kindness, dignity, and respect. We don’t just provide practical support; we build relationships. For us, it’s about really
getting to know each client – their likes, dislikes, stories, and aspirations – so we can give truly personalised care. That human connection is what makes all the difference.
CGT: Can you share a story or moment that really sums up the positive impact your service has had on someone’s life?
T: One moment that always stays with me is a gentleman who had lost much of his confidence after a hospital stay. With the support of our carers, he gradually regained his independence –from getting back into his garden to reconnecting with friends at his local café. His family told us they felt like they had their dad back again. Moments like that remind us why we do what we do.
CGT: Many families struggle with the decision to bring in outside help –what would you say to reassure them?
T: It’s completely natural to feel hesitant, but I always
say that bringing in support isn’t about taking away independence — it’s about enhancing it. We work in partnership with families, making sure they are part of every decision. Our role is to relieve some of the pressure, provide peace of mind, and ensure loved ones receive the best possible care while continuing to live life their way.
CGT: Looking ahead, how do you see care-athome evolving, and what hopes do you have for your own business and the community you serve?
T: Care-at-home is becoming increasingly important as people live longer and want to remain in their own homes for as long as possible. I see the future as even more personalised, with greater use of technology to complement the human touch we provide. For Heritage Healthcare, my hope is simple: to continue growing a service that families trust, to create more local jobs for compassionate carers, and to help more people live with dignity, joy, and independence in their own homes.
