Dear Readers,
Exfoliation is one of the most powerful tools in our treatment room, but also one of the most misunderstood. That’s why this month, we’re peeling back the layers to bring you a series of in-depth features on exfoliation that speak to the science, nuance, and artistry of professional skin renewal.
Inside this issue, you’ll find advanced education written specifically for estheticians who are ready to level up their protocols. From acid stacking vs. single-acid approaches, to building treatment series that work in harmony with the skin's natural rhythm, we cover it all. We also take a hard look at the intersection between exfoliation and microbiome health, and what it really means to treat skin of color with intention, safety, and cultural competence.
To complement the education, our Prime & Polish photoshoot highlights the season’s best exfoliating products for both face and body. Think lush body polishes, skin-smoothing pads, and enzyme-rich formulas that deliver that radiant posttreatment glow. Whether you’re creating spa-worthy rituals or retailing client-friendly exfoliants, we’ve curated this visual guide with both esthetic value and efficacy in mind.

In the world of advanced exfoliation, few topics stir as much curiosity and confusion as acid stacking. The practice of layering multiple acids in a single treatment session has become popular in both clinical and holistic skincare spaces, promising to deliver compounded results through synergy. However, this trend calls
for a deeper understanding of skin physiology, ingredient chemistry, and treatment strategy.
Acid stacking, when done correctly, can deliver dramatic improvements in tone, texture, and overall skin clarity. It offers the ability to target multiple concerns at once. For instance, using salicylic acid to clear pores while layering mandelic acid for its brightening and antibacterial properties. But this technique is not without its risks. The skin's natural acid mantle operates within a narrow pH range, and disturbing this balance with too many low-pH actives can compromise the skin barrier, leading to inflammation, sensitization, or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH).
The key to intelligent acid stacking lies in understanding the pKa value of each acid, which refers to how much an acid dissociates in solution and how it interacts with the skin’s natural pH. Glycolic acid, for instance, has a very low pKa and a small molecular size, allowing it to penetrate quickly and deeply. This makes it a powerful exfoliant, but also a potentially irritating one if not used carefully. Pairing glycolic acid with lactic acid, which is larger and more hydrating, can mitigate some of its intensity. However, layering glycolic with other low-pKa, small-molecule acids may be too aggressive for most skin types.
Single-acid protocols offer more control and predictability. For example, mandelic acid is an excellent choice for clients with acne-prone or pigmented skin, especially in higher Fitzpatrick types, due to its gentle action and antibacterial benefits. Lactic acid works beautifully on dry, dehydrated skin due to its humectant nature. By using a single acid, estheticians can assess how the skin responds and adjust the treatment plan accordingly.
It’s also important to consider client history. Has the client been exfoliating at home? Do they have a compromised barrier from previous peels, sun exposure, or acne medications? These factors significantly impact how well their skin will tolerate acid stacking. Barrier-first skincare, which prioritizes the skin’s integrity over aggressive exfoliation, is an emerging philosophy that aligns well with single-acid approaches.
When acid stacking is employed, spacing between layers is crucial. Allowing each acid time to absorb and act before applying the next can reduce the risk of irritation. Neutralization and post-treatment care should also be carefully considered. Supporting the skin with calming ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, panthenol, and betaglucan can help soothe any potential irritation.
Client education is another cornerstone. Clients often associate tingling or peeling with efficacy, but estheticians must reframe these perceptions. True skin transformation comes from consistency and tailored treatment, and not just intensity. Whether stacking or sticking with one acid, the goal is always to improve the skin’s health, not to strip it down.
In conclusion, acid stacking isn’t inherently better or worse than single-acid protocols. It’s about choosing the right tool for the job. Mastery of exfoliation lies in personalization, and with the right knowledge, estheticians can confidently guide their clients toward radiant, resilient skin.

The skin’s microbiome has become a hot topic in the skincare industry, and for good reason. This complex ecosystem of bacteria, fungi, and viruses plays a vital role in skin health—regulating inflammation, protecting against pathogens, and supporting the skin barrier. But while exfoliation is a cornerstone of professional skincare, it can easily disrupt the microbiome if not performed thoughtfully.
Historically, exfoliation was about sloughing off dead skin to reveal a fresh layer underneath. The more aggressive the treatment, the more effective it was perceived to be. Today, however, estheticians understand that exfoliation must be strategic, not excessive. The outermost layer of the epidermis—the stratum corneum— houses not only corneocytes and lipids but also a host of beneficial microorganisms. Over-exfoliating this layer can compromise the skin’s immunity and lead to issues like increased sensitivity, breakouts, dermatitis, and even fungal infections.
The link between the microbiome and the acid mantle is especially significant. When we exfoliate with acids or scrubs, we temporarily lower the skin’s pH. While this can be beneficial for short-term desquamation, repeated disruption without proper recovery time may destabilize the environment
in which the microbiome thrives. This is particularly problematic for clients already dealing with barrier disorders or inflammatory skin conditions.
Gentle alternatives are emerging to help estheticians respect the microbiome while still encouraging healthy turnover. Polyhydroxy acids (PHAs), like gluconolactone, offer large molecular structures that exfoliate superficially while also providing antioxidant and humectant benefits. Enzyme exfoliants derived from papaya, pineapple, or pumpkin work by digesting only the dead protein cells, leaving living tissue and microbiota intact. Even fermented ingredients, such as lactobacillus ferment lysate, show promise for refining skin texture without disturbing microbial balance.
Post-exfoliation recovery is just as important. Incorporating prebiotics and postbiotics into treatments helps re -
plenish the skin’s microflora. Betaglucan, panthenol, calendula, and colloidal oat are excellent additions to calm inflammation and support recovery. Hydration is also crucial, as a well-hydrated barrier supports a thriving microbiome.
Estheticians must also educate clients on at-home exfoliation. Clients often overuse exfoliating acids in search of quick results. Encouraging them to focus on barrier repair and microbiome-supporting products, especially in between professional treatments, will ultimately lead to healthier, more resilient skin.
The future of exfoliation is rooted in balance. By honoring the skin’s natural systems, including the microbiome, estheticians can offer results-driven care that supports and not suppresses the skin’s innate intelligence.

Exfoliation is more than a single step in a facial, it’s a strategy. When used wisely over time, exfoliation can transform skin texture, clarity, and tone. But the timing and sequencing of exfoliation treatments is what separates short-term glow from long-term results.
A successful exfoliation series begins with intention. Are you working to clear acne? Brighten pigmentation? Soften wrinkles or texture? Each goal requires a different pace and type of exfoliation. Instead of jumping into aggressive treatments, estheticians should begin with a “prep phase” to
build the skin’s tolerance. This phase might include enzymes, light lactic acid peels, or microdermabrasion combined with hydration. The goal here is to strengthen the barrier and gently stimulate cellular renewal.
Once the skin is prepped and responsive, the active phase begins. This is when you may introduce stronger acids—like glycolic, salicylic, or blended peels—depending on the client’s goals and skin response. The frequency of these treatments should be determined by skin type, sensitivity, and lifestyle. For example, a client who is outdoors often may need more spacing between treatments to avoid sun sensitivity and overexposure.
Throughout the series, progress should be monitored carefully. Just because the skin tolerates an exfoliant doesn’t mean it needs more of it. Inflammation, dehydration, and dullness can all be signs that the skin is over-treated. If so, a reset period with calming treatments may be required.
The final phase is maintenance. Once the primary goal is achieved, clients may only need monthly exfoliation with hydrating and antioxidant support. This is a critical time to reinforce skin education, especially around SPF, athome actives, and barrier care.
Timing within the session also matters. Some acids should be neutralized within a specific time frame, while others are self-neutralizing. Modalities like LED light or oxygen infusion can be timed after exfoliation to support healing and enhance results.
When mapped with intention, an exfoliation series becomes a journey, a collaboration between esthetician and client that builds trust, delivers results, and honors the skin's evolving needs.

Exfoliating melanin-rich skin requires a level of care, knowledge, and nuance that every esthetician should prioritize. While exfoliation is an essential part of treating hyperpigmentation, acne, and dullness, skin of color is more prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) and longlasting discoloration. This means that aggressive exfoliation, especially without proper prep and post-care, can do more harm than good.
Understanding the behavior of melanocytes in skin of color is crucial. Any irritation, abrasion, or inflammation can stimulate melanocyte activity, resulting in dark spots. That’s why low and slow is the golden rule. Acids like mandelic, lactic, and phytic are preferred because they are larger molecules, penetrate more slowly, and are less likely to trigger inflammation. Enzyme peels are also excellent options for gentle exfoliation.
TCA, glycolic, and high-percentage AHA peels should be approached with caution. Even when tolerated during treatment, these acids can cause delayed pigmentation issues if the barrier is compromised. Patch testing and thorough intake are essential when working with skin of color.
Pre-treatment protocols often include melanogenesis inhibitors like kojic acid, arbutin, azelaic acid, and niacinamide. These reduce the risk of pigment development during and after exfoliation. Post-treatment care should prioritize hydration, barrier repair, and continued pigment suppression.
Cultural competency also means understanding client concerns and expectations. Clients may not always be familiar with exfoliation or may have had negative experiences with chemical peels. Building trust, setting realistic expectations, and explaining the long-game strategy of gentle, progressive exfoliation is key.
Finally, consider the whole picture—lifestyle, sun exposure, hormone fluctuations, and genetics all influence how skin of color responds to exfoliation. Estheticians who invest time in understanding these factors will deliver better outcomes and build deeper client relationships.
Exfoliating skin of color is not about avoiding actives, it’s about mastering their use with care, confidence, and respect for the rich diversity of skin we are privileged to treat.

What sparked your passion for skincare and becoming an esthetician?
I’ve always been drawn to skin because I’ve HAD TO care about my own skin growing up. I’ve dealt with varying severity of eczema all over my body, so very quickly, for my own comfort, I had to learn what I could and couldn’t use. As I got into my 20s, adult acne came into my life. Everything combined really lit a passion for giving people the guidance and safe space I wish I had. Creating not just the physical comfort, but also mental comfort with skin was one of my main goals, and I’d like to think, after the four years I’ve spent in the treatment room, I’ve accomplished that.
How has growing up in Northern Virginia and the DMV area influenced your approach to skincare?
Being born and raised in NoVa (Northern Virginia) and the DMV area (DC, Maryland, Virginia), I always had access to learn from a melting pot of cultures and backgrounds. I am so thankful for this area being my home base and where I get to work. It truly has expanded my knowledge as a professional, dealing with all skin tones, ages, genders, and skin conditions. Even with languages—while I can’t speak fluent Spanish—growing up in this area has given me enough exposure to the language to widen my understanding with certain clients, which I have witnessed provides an extra sense of comfort and vulnerability when one doesn’t feel isolated in that way. My heart will always be thankful for this area no matter where I end up. Truly, there is no place like it. It definitely supports my open arms, open mind approach to skincare and has forced me out of any “comfort zones” to expand my knowledge to truly be accommodating to every and anyone.
Why do you refer to yourself as the “realistic esthetician”?
I call myself the “realistic esthetician” because, like I mentioned before, that’s who I needed before I became a professional. Being early Gen-Z, my generation was exposed to the very beginnings of toxic internet culture and beauty standards. I personally have felt that weight of society for a long time, and as an esthetician, I’ve watched so many people of all ages and genders beat themselves down due to the constant exposure to those things. It gets so confusing when all you’re seeing is perfect skin, perfect hair, perfect bodies, etc. Showing that this “perfect” doesn’t actually exist—and what the reality is—is so key to developing in
the right direction, especially with the younger crowds. TikTok’s algorithm, while I love it, is a main culprit of many of these issues. So, throwing myself to the wolves and being the one who calls all of this misinformation out is not just a hobby—I feel as if it’s my duty to guide people away from these pipelines of self-toxicity.
What’s your best advice for estheticians trying to grow online or create content?
My best advice is: don’t shut up. Haha. As crazy as that sounds, you need to face a little bit of the rejection therapy the internet will serve you for some things. It really does take thick skin to willingly post yourself online with raw takes, so it’s best to have a support system, therapist, or outlet of some kind when ignorance takes over someone’s keyboard. But don’t let that turn you off. I posted three times a day for a year and a half before I even got my first viral video. You need to love it, you need to have the passion, and understand it’s not for views (trust me, the satisfaction of views gets stale very quick). Post your first video, be a little messy, create a community, and find your TRUE voice. Your people will be there, but you need to post so they find you!
What do you love about using Skin Script in your practice?
Skin Script truly makes skincare easy, which is a huge plus for me and other estheticians. On the professional side, it’s free to sign up, they have free classes, and a resource center that has always answered all my questions. For clients, the products they have all mesh very well together, don’t overwhelm, and offer price ranges that won’t make people choose between treatments and products. I truly believe they’ll always be a part of my treatment room, and especially after working with the team personally now, I will always lift them up to the spotlight when I can. They’re
truly by estheticians, for estheticians, through and through.
How do you build trust both online and in your treatment room?
Trust takes time, just like any situation in life. Being in the service industry since I was 15 really drilled people skills into my everyday life, so being an esthetician is no different. With followers, being honest always has proved itself as the best method. No sugarcoating and not accidentally becoming a brand rep has kept my audience and me very close. In my treatment room, it’s a little different. Your first interaction sets the tone for everything—eye contact, your greeting, having a genuine smile, and the correct tone. When you figure out that formula, you can watch within a few minutes how people become less tense, more vulnerable, and willing to literally put their trust in your hands. I always make sure, no matter how long I’ve had a client, I adjust every single treatment to their liking—never assuming that I should do something just because they liked it once. While I can easily express all this now, I want to remind any beginner esthies reading that it TAKES TIME.
Don’t rush yourself, and remember you can learn something from every single client you have.
What’s your top piece of skincare advice for clients?
My best advice is that it never has to be complicated. As long as you have a cleanser, hydration, exfoliation, and SPF that’s compatible with your skin type, you don’t need to push yourself to use anything else. Now of course, that’s in the case of it working for you. If you find difficulty with skincare, I always recommend a professional in your area. Many people don’t realize you can do express facials or just consultations to fit your budget as well. I always say you can’t have a good house without a good foundation, so with your skin, you need the basics that fit you before you add anything else.
Do you have a favorite facial or treatment to perform?
This is such a pageant answer, but truly I have no favorites. I think my favorite treatments to do change—like right now, it’s oily skin facials—but I don’t have one single favorite. Overall, the
experiences that have stuck with me the most are always the emotional ones. Tears, laughs, pretend therapy sessions, and mutual respect for one another is always #1 for me. I’ve been there throughout full pregnancies, relationships, graduations, and more life events for my clients. I love them with all my heart, and just how I’ve transformed their skin and mindsets, they’ve absolutely transformed my life as well.
If you could change one thing about the esthetics industry, what would it be?
Now this might be a hot take, but I would change the deep-set insecurity that’s in the roots of the industry. I remember writing a personal paper about this very topic (maybe one day it’ll be published). As much as we are an industry that can launch people forward, there are so many aspects that feed off of insecurity purely for monetary reasons. I mean, let’s face it—our jobs run off of someone’s dislike or want to change something with their appearance, so it’s always a thin line of empathy and judgment. Comparison of not only people but brands, which leads to economic insecurity for many people, has been a huge one I witness daily. I talk about this a lot on my TikTok, and one of my main points is ALWAYS choosing every single word that comes out of your mouth as a professional very wisely. For example: “CAN be an acne trigger” vs. “WILL trigger your acne.” A simple choice of words can change the entire meaning of your message. It can also change how people then behave in their own lives with skincare and taking care of their skin. Thus, not wanting to promote that insecurity because of scare tactics that (may or may not be intentional) will take a toll on a client. We, as a whole in the industry, have been very blinded by brand marketing and cherry-picked science that has taken a deeper toll on the image of the industry and the image our clients walk away with. No more sham-
ing. No more comparison. We need to focus on accurate science and mutual respect.
How has being an esthetician helped you grow personally?
Oh gosh, how long is this article allowed to be? lol. Truly, being an esthetician has changed my life for the good. There are so many deeper intricacies that come with your education and career that open up your eyes to your own being. One of my biggest points of self-love and discovery is when we were learning about the Fitzpatrick scale. Stay with me now—but of course, you learn how you can’t just assume someone’s Fitz level, you have to understand their heritage. This made me look deeper into where I came from. I always knew my Ma’s half was English and Italian and my Dad was Appalachian. This part of my education forced me to sit down and do my research about myself. Finally feeling a connection I didn’t have when I was younger with understanding Sicily, its history, the deeper issues of immigration and assimilation. Then with Appalachia—how misunderstood it’s been for so long—the history, the deeprooted spiritual connection people have to nature (I swear, visit West Virginia
and you’ll feel the magic). I have such a strong self-identity and point of pride with who I am all thanks to esthetics. Even physical looks-wise, it’s given me a window to see beauty in myself that I never saw before. My soul is intertwined with this career. I will never not love it.
What’s next for you in your esthetics journey?
Well, by the time this is published, I have made a huge move for myself! I am now working with @esty.memes, which is an Instagram account I know so many people love. I am so thankful for Brittany (shoutout my fellow Gemini) for putting her trust in me to help with the audience and content. I am hoping to continue the funny memes all the esties love while adding new ideas to uplift and shout out smaller estheticians. Beyond that, I’d love to be able to speak at conferences or classes so I can personally connect with more people and provide my perspective in this industry at a larger scale.
