DERMAPLANING

WAXING

Dermaplaning is a method of exfoliation using a curved surgical blade to remove vellus hair along with a strong exfoliation for the skin. It was originally designed to treat deep acne scars with a device called a dermatome. Waxing also exfoliates, along with removing unwanted hair.

Remember to becareful when removing facial hair and choose the correct wax. Soft wax should not be used to removal vellus facial hair because it’s too strong. It takes off the first layer of skin which, over time, can create hyperpigmentation. It is recommended to use a film wax because it is gentle

enough to be reapplied if necessary. Film wax only removes epithelial cells. Dermaplaning does have some reported side effects, including breakouts, infection, extreme redness and sensitivity, and scarring. It is also recommended every one to three weeks in order to help stimulate collagen.

Waxing helps to slow hair growth down by extracting the hair at the hair papilla. This causes the hair to grow back softer, finer, weaker, and slower in growth. Ideal time between treatments is four to six weeks.

Over time, dermaplaning may be too strong for the skin and can lead to over exfoliation, which can cause the skin to toughen. Dermaplaning has been beneficial for most clients, but is not recommended for everyone. Waxing may be more obtainable,

plus It’s not as harsh for the skin even though it helps destroy hair growth.

Hi Lonice! Can you give a bit of your back story?

I’m a wife, mom, graduate of the University of North Texas, and the first entrepreneur in my family. Prior to starting my spa business I worked in retail as a supervisor and climbed my way up with the company to corporate retail, getting my dream job as a fashion buyer. I was then laid off and that’s when Laced by Lonice was born full time in 2015.

What inspired you to start an esthetics business?

I was a client first. I would get my lashes and waxing services done faithfully and I fell in love with the instant gratification of getting those services done. I’m such a minimalist, so when lash extensions became a trend I became obsessed because I would always wear mascara and would be tired of my mascara running by the end of day. Laced by Lonice offers a wide array of services. How do you decide what to add to your offerings?

I always attended spa shows all over the world, like the ICES shows, to stay aware of the latest trends and take classes to stay inspired and motivated.

Then I go back and do an analysis of my client portfolio to see where some I can possibly add into my business where it makes sense.

Which treatments are most in demand by your clientele?

Chemical peels, skin tag removal, lash extensions, and hydrafacial.

What advice would you give estheticians just starting out in their careers?

Don’t be afraid to put yourself in the marketplace. Our industry is a trillion dollar industry, which means there is room for you, too! Attend trade shows and take classes to LEARN as much information as possible. Knowledge is power and it will help you stand apart from others with your education.

What are your top marketing tips to grow a business?

Instagram hashtags changed my life and still are eight years later. 90 percent of my clientele still visit my Instagram which is a FREE marketing tool. Consistency is key! Post every day! Go live! Every time I go live I make

money or gain a new client!

Also, take fresh photos for marketing. Every quarter, I have a photo shoot to create new engagement with my audience.

Networking! Attend events and host events. The more people see your face, the more people will respect you and get to know who you are. Our business is personal, so future clients want to see your personality and see if they can relate to you.

Be your own walking billboard. If you offer lashes, you should have lashes. If you offer facials, you should get facials. If you offer waxing, get waxed. This is the number one way I gain and keep my clients because I can relate to every single service and organically talk to them about my experience and they can trust me.

Laced by Lonice is known for luxurious pampering. What is the key to an elevated experience?

Offering water and wine and spa robe and slippers. Consider a VIP option for

Why are trade shows must-attend events for industry pros?

I attended my first trade show my first month in esthetics school in 2015 and that was so inspiring to me to see all of products and services available that I had the opportunity of offering once I graduated. I took the classes to learn about the spa industry, the actual business behind a spa, and so many more. I truly believe if I didn’t, I wouldn’t have the success I have because of shows like this. To get to touch and feel some of the products and try them out to see what is best for me and my business was awesome. It is important for the longevity of your career. Who would have thought I’d get the opportunity to be a speaker when I started eight years ago. That means I have made a career out of esthetics - not just a hobby. This is my life and I know trade shows have helped keep my light ignited year after year. The energy is unmatched at the shows!

An Esty’s First Year Journey: April

This month, we discuss how worlds collide with Sofia’s two areas of study: esthetics and nursing.

Sofia, you are studying both esthetics and nursing. Where have you found these two industries overlap the most?

I have found that esthetics and nursing overlap the most in dermatologist’s offices, hospitals, and/or medical spas.

How has your esthetics training helped your understanding of nursing - and vice versa?

I have been studying medicine since high school because of the magnet program I was in. So because I have been studying medicine for so long, learning the anatomy and physiology of the skin was easier. Working in esthetics, I learn communication skills with my clients that I can apply to nursing as well.

In what ways do you see esthetics and nursing merging closer together as technology evolves?

I feel that as technology evolves, we can come up with more advanced treatments. For example, more advanced forms of laser treatments having to with skin or hair. I can’t perform many of these treatments without a nursing degree because they require extensive background knowledge and scientific research. Perhaps there could also be 3D technology to assist in facials as there already is with nails and lashes.

What are the advantages of an esthetics career with a nursing background?

With a nursing background, I can do more advanced facials such as the Platelet-Rich Plasma facial. That’s where your own blood is taken and the plasma obtained from it is infused into your skin. I could also offer IV treatments for those who may need it. In certain states, you can perform injections such as fillers with a nursing degree.

Ultimately, how do you plan to apply your nursing degree to a career in esthetics?

My goal is to run a medical spa where I can provide advanced facials and potentially injections. I’m still determining how much I truly want to do injections but, I feel like as I get deeper into my nursing degree, I can finalize that decision.

A fantastic free-flowing treatment

According to the Cecily Braden training manual for the Dr. Vodder Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) Intensive Hands-On Training Program, "MLD stands as a recognized and well-researched therapeutic technique worldwide. It is employed not only in medical settings, but also in wellness

centers, addressing diverse health and skincare issues by stimulating lymphatic flow and promoting overall well-being.”

At my spa, Skintegrity, the Waterfall Facial offers everything featured in our Classic facial (cleansing, exfoliation, extractions, massage), but in lieu of a mask, the esthetician performs roughly thirty minutes of MLD. This allows for the full Dr. Vodder method of face,

neck, and shoulders with twenty-five movements, all delivered with light, alternating pressure for stretch and non-stretch movements that activate the parasympathetic nervous system and allows the body to enter deep relaxation for increased healing. Each movement is performed five times in a series of three for a consistently rhythmic service that improves the following conditions: acne, rosacea, TMJ, chronic sinus infections, headaches, inflammation, puffy eyes, scars and burns.

For mamas-to-be, this has incredible benefits once you are through the first trimester. In the second and third trimesters, MLD safely activates the lymphatic and venous systems to move blood pressure away from the uterus, helping to relieve bloating, discomfort, and pain. As pregnancy progresses, circulation patterns change which leads to swelling caused by retention of sodium and water placing pressure on the inferior vena cava. MLD supports not only the circulatory system, but also the immune and digestive systems, which all could use extra support during pregnancy. MLD helps balance hormones and may help reduce mood swings, while increasing absorption of nutrients on a cellular level, transporting toxic waste away from the uterus, maintaining a healthy internal environment for baby, and minimizing the possibility for viral infections by distributing immune cells throughout the body. In the fourth trimester, breast care can be a great challenge. MLD can help normalize milk flow, prevent mastitis, cleanse breast tissue for improved flow of fluids and provide relief for swollen and tender breasts.

What is your business called and where are you located?

My business is The Skin Artisté and it is located in Wynnewood, Pennsylvaniain Philadelphia’s Main Line.

Can you give a little information about your background as an esthetician?

I’ve been a licensed esthetician for nine years and celebrating the two year anniversary of my business in April 2024! My journey began by working as a salon manager and then at a spa, where I gained valuable hands-on experience and learned from seasoned professionals in the industry. After years of refining my craft and developing a deep understanding of skin conditions, I took a leap of faith and ventured out on my own. While scary at first, I was confident that my background in business management and my technical skills as an esthetician would lead to my success. I recently hired my first employee to expand The Skin Artisté and I’m so excited for what the future holds!

What inspired you to become an esthetician?

From a young age I always had a passion for esthetics and knew that I wanted to be in the health and beauty industry. I started off in this industry by doing makeup and I grew tired of covering up imperfections. My passion came from wanting to make women feel confident in their bare skin. So that’s how I dove into skincare and went to esthetics school.

What beauty philosophy do you stand by?

My philosophy is that healthy skin can be achieved without overcomplicated routines as long as there is balance and consistency. Your skin is your canvas so its important to protect and nourish it.
