Several Bellmore residents compared their Hurricane Sandy experiences with their memories of the Hurricane of 1938. They described memories of storm damage, losing power and trying to stay warm.

Bellmore resident Fern Dobris was 10 years old and living in the Bronx when the Hurricane of 1938 hit. “The water was cascading down the steps from the floor above, and my father put towels at the front door of the apartment…so the water wouldn’t come in.

“I remember coming home from public school and the wind almost carried me away. I don’t remember how I made it home,” she said. During superstorm Sandy, a tree across the street fell onto the tree in front of her house, causing it to fall on her house, damaging the gutter and the shingles on the roof.

Something similar also happened to one of her neighbors. “By and large, I consider myself lucky. It could have been a lot worse,” she said.

Damage on the East End Bill Sette grew up on Linden Street in Bellmore. He was born in 1920 and was 18 when the Hurricane of 1938 hit.

Although there was no damage to his home or property at the time, he remembers the damage on the East End of Long Island.

“We were boating people at the time, and I remember riding out on the East End in my boat two years later and seeing the destruction.”

Mr. Sette lost all his belongings in last month’s storm. “My age, 92 years old, is

a hell of a time to start living again.

Memories are all gone in a couple of minutes’ time,” he said. “It’ll be months before I can get back in the house, so I’ll probably move in with my daughter.”

Roy Weinman has lived in Bellmore since his birth in 1924. He grew up on Frederick Street, and he said he did not recall any damage to his home or to Weinman’s Hardware on Bedford Avenue, where he worked with his father.

“The lights were out in the store here and… all over the place. We lit the place up with kerosene lamps and… did business and helped people.”

He also recalled picking up a truck load of candles from Brooklyn. This year, only half of his store had a power outage, and there was also no damage.

Houses blown off foundations Alice Etringer grew up on the west side of Park Avenue in North Merrick.

Born in 1925, she was 13 when the Hurricane of 1938 hit. “Some houses were taken off their foundations, and there were a lot of trees down,” she recalled. Describing her experience losing power, she said: “Everybody at that time had kerosene lamps, and you still had the kerosene lamps when the electric went off… and a coal furnace… and a wood-burning stove.”

The Long Island Lighting Company gave out plenty of free dry ice at its Hicksville headquarters, she added.

Today, Ms. Etringer lives at Bellmore Gardens, a Bellmore Avenue senior housing complex run by the Town of Hempstead Housing Authority. The complex offered free lunches during the storm, and used a generator for backup

Taking concrete steps Of all the possible options for protecting New York City from another Sandy-type hurricane or worse, Professor Malcolm Bowman from the Marine Sciences Research Center of Stony Brook University, thinks the most promising is a project by engineers from The Halcrow Group called the New York-New Jersey Outer Harbor Gateway, five miles of causeways, tunnels and sea gates from Sandy Hook in New Jersey to the Rockaways in Queens.

He prefers it to a sea wall constructed under the Verrazano Bridge that, he notes, would not protect Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, Breezy Point (the “Irish Riviera”) or JFK Airport. Also, the plan takes advantage of shallow waters except for the shipping channels, making construction easier.

Gates would close the shipping channels in the event of a storm surge.

Professor Bowman also envisions a four-lane highway and a rapid-rail connection between northern New Jersey and Long Island, bypassing Manhattan and connecting to JFK Airport. Tolls could help pay for it, he says.

The first step is an initiative from New York City, spearheaded by U.S. Senator Charles Schumer, who asks Congress to fund a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to study the pros and cons of the locations of stormsurge barriers. There would be “no concrete next week,” as Professor Bowman points out. All aspects of any project would need to be taken into consideration, including the need to study barrier beaches, flood geology, water quality, fish environment, social justice, etc.

Regarding sewage, the Hudson has to flow out, so investing in water quality studies, fisheries and ecology needs to be done, among the oceanography work.

The proposed causeway is a “major political challenge” as Professor Bowman points out, because three states, large cities, boroughs and counties all would have to work together. But it is certainly something to consider. Katrina has been called a social – not a natural – disaster because levee work was not done. Can the same be said for Sandy or some future as-yet unnamed storm if we don’t start work on storm surge barriers?

reducing winter recess time.

According to a district spokesperson – and on its website – two options will be discussed at length by the board.

One includes extending Regents testing days on Tuesday and Wednesday, January 22 and 23, to full-instruction days. Tests would be taken during morning hours, and regular classes would be held during the afternoon.

The second option involves full instruction days WednesdayFriday, February 20-22.

The board will discuss the options and vote on one. Students and parents are invited to attend to make their voices heard. If you applied for disaster assistance with the Federal Emergency Management Agency following superstorm Sandy and received a letter stating you were not eligible for disaster aid, this first letter may not be the final word.

If applicants receive a letter from FEMA that states that they are ineligible, it does not necessarily mean an applicant is not eligible for disaster assistance. If the letter states “ineligible” or “incomplete,” more information may be needed, such as the applicant’s insurance documents or proof of status of their claim, prior to disaster aid being granted.

Dr. James Dolan, director of the Nassau County Office of Mental Health, Chemical Dependency and Developmental Disabilities Services (the Office), noted that “the enormity of the personal challenges and material loss experienced has overwhelmed the usual coping capacities of most people.”

Crisis counselors help survivors identify, label and express emotions; adjust to the disaster and losses; make decisions and take action.

According to state guidelines. full-time crisis counselors would be paid $20 an hour and receive vehicle mileage reimbursement; crisis counselor/team leaders would earn $30 an hour and project coordinators would make between $20 and $45 an hour. These rates can, however, be modified by the provider agency.

Holiday party at Tackapausha A live animal program and crafts will be featured at the South Shore Audubon’s annual Holiday Party for children at the Tackapausha Museum on Saturday, December 8, from 1-4 p.m.

The animal presentation will be at 1:30 p.m. with a second performance at 2:30 p.m. so all guests can be accommodated.

The crafts will include nature-related items and feeders for birds. There will also be light refreshments.

Film interns needed The Nassau County Film Office has nonpaying, part-time internships and volunteer positions available in its Mineola office. The Nassau County Film Office helps production companies find locations and services when they are filming in the Nassau County area. It works with major studio films, independent films, commer-

cials, industrial videos and fashion photography.

The office works closely with the Long Island Film/TV Foundation on producing the Filmmakers Connection Meetings and the Long Island International Film Expo (LIIFE), held annually in Bellmore.

Some past interns have gone on to become promotions managers of local radio stations, lawyers at the state attorney’s office, location scouts, placement managers in the entertainment field, and other varied positions in the film and commercial industries.

You must be good on the phone, computer literate and dependable. The Nassau County Film Office is open from Monday -Friday, 9 a.m.-4:45 p.m. We ask that you work 2-3 days within those days/hours.

Town animal shelter to hold foster care seminar The Hempstead Town Animal Shelter will hold a foster care and volunteering seminar on Saturday, December 8, at noon at the shelter, 3320 Beltagh Avenue, Wantagh. All residents interested in fostering a cat or dog, or volunteering their time at the shelter, are urged to attend this informative meeting.

“By volunteering your time and/or fostering a cat or dog, you are helping to make a real difference in the lives of shelter animals, contributing to their becoming excellent candidates for permanent adoption,” said Cynthia Iacopella, shelter director.

“During this seminar, our dedicated shelter staff will offer detailed information about these programs.”

Through the shelter’s Foster Volunteer Program, a family temporarily adopts a shelter cat or dog, to help the animal become more comfortable living a home environment. General volunteers are also needed, and will be assigned to a range of different tasks at the shelter.

Servicing Nassau/Suffolk/Queens/Brooklyn Hall of Fame Recipient

The county will create 240 temporary job openings for people to be trained to assist those still struggling emotionally in the aftermath of superstorm Sandy. The jobs would last somewhere between six weeks and nine months.

The job creation is part of a nearly $1.8 million grant awarded to Nassau County’s Office of Mental Health to provide counseling and referral services to those impacted by Sandy’s devastation.

Applicants need not be licensed professionals. The New York State Office of Mental Health Services will provide applicants with the proper training.

The Crisis Counseling Assistance and Training Program, dubbed Project Hope, is similar to programs established after September 11 and Hurricane Irene. It is funded by an $8 million grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and SAMSHA, to be shared by each county impacted by Sandy.

Superstorm Sandy impacted more residents in Nassau than in any other county.

The crisis counseling services will be free to those still suffering from the aftereffects of Sandy, and will be administered by the New York State Office of Mental Health Services, in conjunction with the county’s mental health agency, for a minimum of six weeks – and a possible extension to nine months.

Nassau’s $1.8 million share of the grant will be equally distributed to 12 local social service-type agencies, which have historically contracted with Nassau’s Mental Health office. Each agency would be tasked with hiring, or extending the hours of, 14 workers to be crisis counselors and two from each to be team leaders.

My name is Robert Angrisani and I have been a volunteer firefighter for over 20 years with the Bellmore Fire Department. I have considered it a true honor to have served our great community for the past 10 years as commissioner, and I humbly ask for your support to continue serving in that capacity.

I was raised in Bellmore and graduated from Mepham High School in 1990.

I then went on to graduate from Nassau Community College and attended Hofstra University. I work as a New York State fire inspector specializing in public and private school inspections. I have been married to my wife Amy for 14 years and have three girls, Julia, 12, Grace, 10, and Deanna, 3.

As commissioner I have, along with the rest of the Board of Fire Commissioners, accomplished a variety of initiatives, including focusing on open dialogue, which has bridged the communication gap between taxpayers, firefighters and the board all in the effort to make the fire district more open and transparent.

Another is a technology focus and injection, which looks at optimizing processes, especially business practices because, ultimately, they lead to greater efficiency and cost savings. Examples of these injections are Internet technology, security systems and, most importantly, training.

The board has always encouraged and supported our volunteers to take training courses as often as possible. Our training equipment, along with the expert knowledge of the Fire Department chiefs, officers and members, has offered a solid curriculum that ensures all residents are well protected.

ing by having the latest in firefighting apparatus, equipment and facilities. This has all been done without raising taxes in a climate where taxpayers are counting on officials to watch out for them.

My vision for the Bellmore Fire District, should I have the privilege of being re-elected this December, has several components. I would like to continue to work on our municipal purchasing cooperation, which allows fire districts to partner with other municipalities to pool monetary resources when purchasing.

Facility investment and focus is another area where I want to make sure we, as a district, stay on top. Taking care of our facilities now saves in the future.

I also would like to work on getting our ISO rating the best it could be. The ISO rating is a major factor in determining your insurance premium on your home insurance.

This rating approximates how well your property is protected firematically.

The board is also working on securing grants to even further update our lifesaving equipment, both EMS and firematic to keep or dedicated members safe and well equipped.

Once again I would like to thank the community of Bellmore for the opportunity of serving you over the past 10 years. With your vote I look forward to helping keep the residents safe in the future. Come down and cast your vote on Tuesday, December 11, at the Bellmore Fire Department Headquarters from 2-9 p.m.

Bulldogs hockey players help Long Beach community

The executive board members and senators of Kennedy High School’s Student Government recently attended the New York State Council on Leadership and Student Activities (NYS CLSA) Silver Anniversary Conference. During this three-day conference, the student government learned new leadership skills to enable them to have a more successful year as school officers.

Approximately 35 schools from all over the state sent representatives to the conference. Through many workshops and roundtable discussions, the students were able to share their experience from past events at Kennedy and get ideas for new events from the other schools in attendance.

The students also visited the state Capitol building and listened to five different speakers.

Kennedy students Jesse Richheimer and Nicole Toback received the Dale Hawley Leadership Award, a recognition that went to only five students statewide. In addition, the student government was one of 19 school groups in the state that were named to the NYS CLSA Honor Council, an achievement that is the result of their outstanding dedication to helping the school and community.

Kennedy sophomores Aydin Kessler and Alex Toback were chosen to serve on the state board. They are the lone representatives from Nassau County among 20 students statewide.

Their one-year term will start this spring, during which they will help plan the NYS CLSA’s 2013 state conference.

GAMS Yorker Club experiences colonial Long Island Forty-five Bellmore-Merrick students from Grand Avenue Middle School’s Yorker Club recently took their annual field trip to Wickham Farm on the North Fork. The students were joined by club advisors Daniel Rummenie and Dominik Bargiel.

The students enjoyed a beautiful day of fall weather, went apple and pumpkin picking, and took a historic tour of one of Long Island’s oldest farms. The visit provided the club members with an opportunity to learn about colonial history from a local perspective. The students were able to walk in the footsteps of Benjamin Franklin, who visited the farm over two centuries ago.

Grand Avenue Middle School’s Yorker Club meets twice a month after school and is open to all students. The club annually visits historic sites such as Wickham Farm and Theodore Roosevelt’s house at Sagamore Hill, and tours Yankee Stadium and Madison Square Garden.

Each trip includes a class or tour that explains something about the site and the people who lived there and used it. The Yorker Club is also involved with community service.

Robert Bazarewski - North Bellmore from page 8 My name is Robert Bazarewski and I am seeking election to the position of Commissioner with the North Bellmore Fire District and I am asking for your support.

I have over 29 years of experience in the volunteer fire service. During this time I have held many positions, including company treasurer, truck engineer, a New York State certified emergency medical technician, lieutenant, captain and moving up the ranks, serving as chief of department from 2002 to 2003.

I was the officer in command of North Bellmore’s response to the attacks on

For this past year I have had the honor of serving as the treasurer of the North Bellmore Fire District, which has afforded me the opportunity to work closely with the Board of Fire Commissioners.

The position of fire commissioner is a very important one that includes making sure our members get the best training available, and the purchase and maintenance of state of the art fire/rescue equipment that our residents depend on every day to keep them safe and to protect our fire district.

I believe I have the qualifications to serve as a member of the Board of Fire

the World Trade Center on 9-11. The NBFD operated for a full week in lower Manhattan conducting rescue and recovery operations.

I worked for over 35 years for the Nassau County Department of Publics Works, retiring in 2009 as assistant superintendent of sewage plant. In this position, I oversaw the operation of a large municipal water pollution control plant, staffed by approximately 90 employees with an annual budget of about $27 million. Responsibilities included regulatory compliance and administrative oversight and supervision of this large facility.

Commissioners, and that my work experience would be an asset to the residents of the North Bellmore Fire District. If elected to the Board of Fire Commissioners, I will do my best to maintain these high standards without raising your fire district taxes.

My wife Riva and I have lived in North Bellmore for over 28 years and have six children. We have been involved in many community organizations, including Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, North Bellmore-North Merrick Little League and Basketball League, and the Nassau County Police Department Explorers.

These past few weeks have been a catastrophic episode in the lives of so many in our Long Island community.

With many agencies, organizations and volunteers working towards a speedy recovery and clean up, it seems that lives will be back to normal soon.

“However, we know that disasters can take a great emotional toll on those impacted by them and can be longerlasting than the disaster itself,” according to Linda Leonard, executive director of Long Island Crisis Center.

“As people resume their routine lifestyles and less media attention is given to the crisis, there are those who will be left thinking they are alone and isolated,” she remarked.

At this stage, it is important to recog-

nize the signs of emotional distress, and the crisis center has put together a list of warning signs for people to consider: • Sleeping too much or too little.

• Stomachaches or headaches.

• Anger, feeling edgy or lashing out at others.

• Overwhelming sadness.

• Worrying a lot of the time.

• Feeling like you have to keep busy.

• Lack of energy or always feeling tired.

• Drinking alcohol, smoking or using tobacco more than usual or using illegal drugs.

• Eating too much or too little.

• Not connecting with others.

• Feeling like you won’t ever be happy again.

Not only sand and salt water flooded the well-manicured lawns of Long Island’s South Shore, but oil spilled from outside home-heating oil tanks.

Here are some remedies that may help restore your landscaping, from the Cornell Cooperative Extension: Irrigate the landscape to leach out salts. Be sure irrigation water is not running off into the streets, and is only infiltrating into the landscape.

Spread gypsum over soil when saltwater-damage can not be cured by irrigation alone. The salt will react with gypsum to form sodium sulfate and wash through the soil with more irrigation, leaving harmless calcium precipitate in its place. Sodium allowed to dry will form a hard crust and completely dehydrate the soil.

Reset only small, easy-to-manage trees. Keep roots covered and moist until resetting. Replant trees and shrubs at their original planting depth. Pack soil firmly around the roots to eliminate air pockets and provide support.

Stake the tree for about a year or less, until its roots become re-established. Use three stakes and place each at an angle away from the trunk. To avoid injuring the trunk, fasten a tree to its supporting stakes with a wide strap. Be sure to water the reset tree.

Prune branches that are broken, or dead, with proper pruning cuts, but prune trees only when bark surfaces are dry. Safety is the first consideration in removing branches from storm damaged trees. During the dormant season an arborist can prune your trees to increase wind resistance, however, the tree still must have been planted properly and not be in compacted soil.

Replace lost soil that may have

washed off of tree roots. To increase tree vigor, apply compost, which will improve drainage, soil texture and soil nutrients.

Remove sediment deposited over the roots by the flood. Roots usually extend at least as far out as the canopy.

Remove all debris, silt and mud deposited on the lawn from the storm.

Don’t top your trees! Reducing the length of branches will not help avoid breakage in future storms. Topping is one of the worst things you can do for your trees; branches tend to grow that are weakly attached and are even more likely to break when a storm strikes.
