How might we

create

a user

friendly and unique launching system that safely and accurately launches cargo on the moon’s rough surface?

Portfolio SWINBURNE

According to Nasa, the Indian mission Chandrayaan - 1 in 2008 discovered hydroxyl molecules spread across the lunar surface and concentrated on the poles. Other missions have not only shown the global hydration levels on the moon but that they are actually high concentrations of ice water in the permanently shadowed regions of the poles, the Clavius crater has concentration of about 110 to 412 parts per million.

Therefore, we are assuming that by 2030, we would have established Water processing plants that would purify the water molecules present in the crater and develop water which is fit for human consumption. This water will then be transported to different newly colonised settlements on the moon by our launching system.

CONCEPT 1 CONCEPT 2

Pull the car backwards while pushing down and the motion of the turning wheels is stored as energy in a coiled spring inside the big central toothed wheel. Let go and it unwinds, propelling the machine forward. When the spring has fully sprung, a clutch disengages and lets the car roll free.

Benchmarking

A tennis ball machine works by channeling balls into the landing area. The electric motor powers the hopper, which squeezes the balls and puts them under intense pressure. This forces the balls into a circular tube which leads to a small opening. This soft, rubbery circular area is called a detent. When the tennis ball machine is activated, the balls are forced into the detent and then released.

7

Prototyping

There were a lot of parts that seemed pretty flimsy and our next goal was to strengthen them. One of the main problem that we were facing, was that there was not enough thrust being generated to launch the cargo. That was due to the server wheels moving a bit too much (sideways, almost like they were separating). We solved the first problem of the separating server wheels by adding a U straw-joinery, capping both the vertical axels (as seen in the final model on the right page). We then decided to increase the distance between the server wheels which made the prototype fully functional and accurate.

Final Model Scale

The presence of a handle on the side of the bottom gear shaft will make it easy for the astronauts to spin the elastic band around the center of the shaft, storing potential energy that will be converted into kinetic energy as soon as the handle is let go. The same procedure can be done with the help of machines "like" drills that induce spin. The

How might we create an efficient transportation system that makes it easy to load, transport and unload the cargo across the various terrains on lunar surface?

Portfolio SWINBURNE

The moon has no weather hence the transportation systems can be preserved for a longer time as compared to the transportation systems on earth. The moon also has no tectonic activity that would cover or resurface the existing craters hence it would be safe to say that transportation.

After the vast research, these are the concepts and ideas we really liked and wanted to use to inspire our final concepts. Some of these include a rollercoaster, the hyperloop, trains, ski-lifts, maglevs, etc. There are others like the cybertruck and tank which are modes of transport and not a means of transport that I was focusing on. My main inspiration was the maglev rollercoaster that seems extremely fun.

Journey Map

Starting at the farms and ending at the residence while stopping at the lab in between, we will distribute cans of water in a loop. There are some hurdles along the way, to reach the farm, the cargo needs to get over the soft and slippery soil that surrounds it. At the lab it must pass though a security check point and finally the cargo needs to be delivered hands-free to the residents.

How might we sustain a circular economy for a modular construction system while creating interactive spaces for the residents of the moontown?

Portfolio SWINBURNE

Story Pitch

The existing residents live in individual isolated villas which is causing them to get depressed and long for human interaction. We will be making prefabricated housing for the lunar residents that are growing in number. The special aspect of these houses is that we can make passages connecting a few houses to each other using the same modular elements we have manufactured for the houses. The passages will be common spaces for people to interact with each other, encouraging human contact and in person

Benchmarking

Our main inspiration was the Accordion Fold which refers to a document folding method that uses a series of alternating folds to create multiple panels of a similar size. The parallel pleats formed by the alternating folds will open fully with minimal resistance. This is because each subsequent fold is made in the opposite direction of the fold preceding it. Also, unlike many other folding techniques, accordion folds help minimise the bulk of the finished piece so it will close compactly.

Furthermore, to develop the idea fully, we took the Samsung Galaxy Fold which uses a hinge that has a special CAM structure with two ridge-shaped parts that interlock in stages. It also has a strong retention force, keeping the device unfolded at 180 degrees and preventing the device from accidentally closing.

19

Renders & Sketches

The three different purposes that our construction system transforms into would be the residence for the people at moontown, the warehouse to store equipment and the passages that would act as the common space for the residents to connect and interact with each other.

Portfolio SWINBURNE

Each module has 3 lunarete slabs joined together with 2 CAM structures, to which the accordion folded kevlar reinforced with aluminium ribs are attached. It will also be silicone lined to improve the insulation and make it completely airtight. Silicon can be easily obtained as silica is abundant on the lunar surface. The joinery between the lunarete slabs of each module is an extremely simple tenon and mortise joint making it easy to assemble at the desired location. The Kevlar to Kevlar joinery is the same as that seen on a ziploc bag. It can be joined by using a robotic arm to apply pressure on the ziploc closing it shut like a human would. Moon dust has particles that have jagged sharp angles with microscopic hooks that jut out in all directions with nothing to change them forever. These particles can cut through 3 layers of Kevlar, making the use of just Kevlar irrational so we will cover the Kevlar structure with lunar regolith.

How might we assist shoppers in finding clothing or accessories that suit their tastes in

the easiest and most sustainable way possible?

Portfolio SWINBURNE

The Problem

The problem we are aiming to solve is that finding the right clothes to purchase is a difficult and frustrating experience. It is often overwhelming because the sites are crowded with large banners and pop-up ads. This makes it confusing to navigate a retailer’s website. The experience is also timely. There are millions of options to sort through and filters must be filled in manually for all websites.

How might we

help parents easily engage in family friendly experiences for their kids to get out of the house, have fun and interact with the world around them?

Portfolio SWINBURNE

Research Insights

Children are technology addicts.

Children grew distant from family.

Children are not interested in the outdoors.

Children have become less active post covid.

Children are more likely to do activities in groups rather than alone.

Linking a child’s existing area of interest with something new can help in increasing their enthusiasm towards the new activity.

How Might We...

make it easier for families to create and share memorable experiences resulting in the kids being more socially active?

Portfolio SWINBURNE

Benchmarking

We benchmarked ideas we could potentially take inspiration from. These included a few family-friendly activities with elements that appeal to the parents as well as the children, as well as elements of games that make them interesting. We were inspired and had a lot of ideas relating to spaces for kids to roleplay, spaces like mystery rooms, etc. but what stuck with us was the idea of informing parents of existing activities for them to do with their children, but with a twist. RANDOMISATION!

The app works along sheets of paper for the die that will be mailed to you based on your subscription pack.

Portfolio SWINBURNE

Activities are shuffled and one is presented to you at random based on the category of the colour you rolled For example, if orange was ‘outdoors’ this time, all the activities you get will be related to the outdoors. You are reminded with a notification to take a picture at the end of your activity. This gets saved as a photo memory album in the app.

The App

The family goal is something you want to do together as a family. Every activity you do together as a family using Melinda Says, gets you a step closer to your family goal. You get prompted to make the die and roll it. Next, pick the colour. These icons are the categories of activities, based on your preferences.

After the completion of every activity you move a step closer to achieving the family goal. You are promted to scratch the colour on the die and scan the QR code. That redirects you to a web-page with a ‘tip’ that will enhance the experience of your family goal.

31

Melinda Says

You continue to do activities using the same die till you reach your family goal. You can then use all the tips you got along the way to make your experience better.

Set a new goal and look back at all the memories made at any time from anywhere as long as you have the app!

Once you set a new goal, the app mixes up the category colours for every new goal so it’s something new everytime. The number of activities needed to reach the family goal is editable too. Got no time? Make it less, the choice is yours!
