The proposal adopts the monopile construction system that is utilised in offshore wind farms. The vessel and technology of which can be easily adapted to build the proposal. The use of a monopile construction system was a very deliberate choice in stark opposition to the typically used floating technique, which has a low life span and often fails after heavy rains. (A good example being the Makoko Floating school, NLE) LC0369841

The sturdy nature of the pile technique allows for a vast array of construction manifestations above, providing a secure and solid base that is free from flooding. The cylindrical design of the housing and service buildings allows for as little wind drag in severe weather conditions. A significant amount of natural light can then emanate throughout the community clusters.

Each community cluster is supported by Service Platforms(01), Biorefineries(01) and Market/Sports fields(02) The Clusters grow organically over time, adapting to the ever increasing demand for housing in Lagos. From Medium sized communities(03) to larger communal clusters(04)

BIO-REFINERY SERVICES

BIO-REFINERY

Combined Fire, Medical and Policing service tower. By combining these services you reduce the overhead costs. It is essential to provide adequate services for the new proposal. Allowing for a safe, healthy and secure community.

The Biorefinery collects waste from the individual housing units via a specially designed vessel. The vessels deposits the waste into the biorefinery where it is processed into clean and energy efficient Biogas.

The combined nature of the building enables a focal point for the local community. The interdispersed nature of the urban scheme ensures that the services are within a 5min boat ride to every single housing unit.

LC0369841

The Biogas is then distributed back to the communities for a subsidised fee. All gas and water heating energy needs can be provided by the refinery. Dry waste is utilised for farming. Creating a completely self sustainable closed loop energy production system.

CIRCULAR SUSTAINABILITY LC0369841

Interspersed between the clusters are rooftop water harvesting farms. Capable of capturing and storing 5400L of water a month. More than enough to supply 3 houses with the average non-potable water demand. Calculated by: catchment area(m2 ) x RF(mm) x runoff coefficient = net runoff (litres) @136mm rainfall per day avg.

Food is produced in 4 different areas. The major source comes from the Rooftop farm, 60m2 of highly arable land with uninterrupted daylight hours. An integrated Aquaponics system forms the major part of the floating platform, producing up to 65% of the daily protein needs of the family. The fish are monitored and controlled by a community led program that ensures a cyclical system of fish harvesting. Excess and required food is sold/ bought at the communal Sports Field. Which is transformed into a market during the day.

The rainwater is filtered through the rooftop farm before entering the system and the Floating, Planted platform filters the Grey water leaving the system.

WASTE

The main source of energy comes from the interspersed Windgenerators. Capable of easily supplying 5 households. Excess electricity is sold off to the major network. Bringing a net profit to the inhabitants. Methane for cooking is sourced from the Biodigester housed in the Floating Platform. Excess gas can be purchased at a subsidised fee from the Biorefinery.

All Brown water waste is diverted to the Biodigester in the Floating Platform. This produces enough Methane to supply the family with cooking gas. Cooking and other biodegradable waste is turned to compost for the rooftop farm.

The proposal is completely self sufficient and produces enough wind energy to support a majority of Lagos’s energy requirements.

Once a month a boat collects/ harvests excess waste and solid waste to be processed at the Biorefinery. This Refinery can further process the waste to produce Clean energy and Biofuel. This is then sold back to the community at a subsidised rate.

HOUSING UNIT

Service deck with interchangeable Rainwater Harvesting Farm or Wind-generator.

The modular nature of the design allows for each housing unit to grow and adapt as the family does. Designed to accommodate 2-12 people. The Top of which can be interchanged depending on the communities needs. Electricity generated on one housing is enough to support its neighbors and vice versa with water harvesting.

The House is envisioned as an enclosed loop, in which the circular economy and metabolism of the house is of primary importance. The Flooring and structure are made from locally sourced and durable Eki wood (Lophira Alata) Walls and furniture are similarly made with local Akun (Uapaca Huedelotii)
