Without losing sight of our emphasis on women, last year we added the Man Cave to provide a forum to address men’s health issues. We realized that men often neglect their health and often do not respond to encouragement or pleas from the women in their lives to take better care of themselves. We created the Man Cave to provide an environment for men to discuss and learn about men’s health issues in a “safe” peer environment.

Writer Augusten Burroughs famously said “When you have your health, you have everything. When you do not have your health, nothing else matters.”

The sentiment of that quote inspired me 15 years ago to found the So. Calif.

Women’s Health Conference & Expo.

Since that beginning, the goal of this conference has remained unchanged – to promote the health of individuals and our community. We seek to inform, uplift, celebrate and support each other in our individual and collective journeys to health, wellness and living our best lives.

Our stated original and continued focus has been women. Women have traditionally served as caretakers for their families, and therefore when

We need to ensure we are eating health foods that will aid us in staying and maintaining our health. After a visit, we need to make sure we understand the instructions and information given to us by our doctors. And most importantly, we need to make sure we follow their instructions to the letter and maintain open communications with our care givers. Kathryn Barger L.A. County Supervisor, 5th District

S

upervisor Kathryn Barger proudly serves the residents of Los Angeles County’s 5th Supervisorial District – the county’s largest – spanning 2800 square miles, which includes 22 cities and 70 unincorporated communities in the San Gabriel, San Fernando, Cresenta, Santa Clarita and Antelope Valleys.

Dedicated to providing effective, responsive representation to the residents of Los Angeles County, Kathryn began her career in public service as a college student intern in the office of Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich and rose to become his Chief Deputy Supervisor in 2001, where she served until her election to the Board this past November.

During the course of her County career as chief policy advisor on Health, Mental Health, Social Service and Children’s issues, Kathryn provided leadership to deliver efficient and effective services and programs that have significantly improved the

quality of life for foster children, seniors, veterans, the disabled and the mentally ill.

Committed to keeping our neighborhoods and communities safe, she has worked with state and federal leaders along with our County District Attorney’s office, Sheriff, and other law enforcement agencies to implement tough laws and vital public safety initiatives.

She is an advocate for the environment and efforts to preserve open space, enhance parks, trails, recreational programs and facilities; and strongly supports libraries and after-school programs to serve local communities.

With a strong sense of fiscal responsibility and prudence, Kathryn is dedicated to providing vital county services while protecting financial resources as a responsible steward of taxpayer dollars.

Kathryn was born and raised in the 5th District and comes from a family with deep roots in public service in Los Angeles County. She is married to a retired Sheriff ’s deputy and lives in the San Gabriel Valley.

Jihee Huh

J

ihee Huh is currently the Vice-Chairman of PAFCO (founded in 1977) and Co-Founder of Pete’s Seafood Club, a family-owned and -operated company that believes in empowering its associates and consumers with healthy seafood meal choices.

At Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, she serves as Trustee and Vice-Chair of the Saban Research Institute and is currently a Life Trustee for Southern California Public Radio. Jihee is also a Board Trustee of CAUSE – Center for Asians United for Self Empowerment.

So Cal Women’s Health Conference is near and dear to her heart. Jihee believes in the importance of education and access to healthcare information for all individuals and families. It is truly vital to leading a healthy, happy life. So many people have busy lives and have little time to research new and innovative care for themselves and their families. at Prescott is a native of Hampton, VA and a graduate of Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. She started her radio career at WYLD-FM in New Orleans. Pat has spent most of her career in New York City, beginning at legendary jazz station WRVR. For thirteen years Pat was the morning show host at New York’s Smooth Jazz station CD 101.9. Currently, Pat is the solo host of The Wave’s Morning Show. You can also find Pat participating in many community causes and events throughout Los Angeles and around the country. Pat is truly the first lady of 94.7 THE WAVE.

everend “Elder” Nolanda Yvonne Love, a Pasadena, CA native, is dedicated to making a difference in generations. She is motivated to inspire, encourage and comfort others through her multi-faceted ministry of Music and The Word; worship leader, keyboards and song writing, preaching, teacher and author. This vibrant, passionate and most creative lady has a message of hope to share with the world through her first book, “Joy for the Journey: Heart Expressions – A Poetic Celebration;” along with her newest venture, “Love Notes” – beautifully photographed floral and scenic note cards.

A licensed and ordained Foursquare Minister, “Pastor” Nolanda and her husband Joe, are active servant leaders at The Church on The Way in Van Nuys, CA, Pastor Tim Clark, Sr. Pastor. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree of Theology from The King’s University, Los Angeles, and was most recently employed full time as Personal Executive Assistant to Dr. Jack Hayford, Founder and Chancellor.

Rev. Love’s background comprises years of collaboration with community groups, schools, ministries, and philanthropic organizations; to include Jean Burch Ministries, Dr. Margaret P. Douroux/Heritage Foundation; Pastoral Staff with Victory Bible Church, and Lincoln Avenue Baptist Church Minister of Music. She is a past presenter and Volunteer with Lena Kennedy and the Southern California Women’s Health Conference, Member of Friends of PACEF (Pasadena Altadena Community Endowment Fund); and Charter Member of both the newly established National Congress of Black Women San Gabriel Valley Chapter, and the National Smithsonian African American Museum. Nolanda was honored as The AKA Sorority Pasadena Chapter, 2014 Mother of the Year; and is a past recipient of Women in Action’s prestigious “Wind Beneath My Wings” award.

Also known as “Mombee” and “Grampee,” Nolanda and Joe are blessed with two wonderful sons and six remarkable grandchildren who are the “delight of their lives.” They are devoted to family, and were among an honored group of 2016 recipients of Parents of the Year Award from the City of Pasadena! epresentative Judy Chu was elected in July 2009 to the U.S. House of Representatives as the Representative of California’s 32nd District, which includes East Los Angeles and the San Gabriel Valley. She immediately got to work representing the interests of her constituents, voting on several environmental bills and working through the night on her first day in office during a marathon debate on the health care reform bill. In the 112th Congress, Rep. Chu serves on the House Judiciary Committee, where she is a member of the Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security and the Intellectual Property, Competition, and the Internet subcommittees. She is also a member of the House Small Business Committee, where she is leading the Contracting

Phuong Ly Gallagher

A

t the age of 28, Phuong Gallagher had a lot of big plans, including starting a family with her new husband, Ed, and their daughter, Taylor. A diagnosis of Stage III cancer six months after being newly married (and progress to Stage IV after another year) changed her path but did not change her outlook on life. This new path was one of determination and perseverance which eventually led her to advocacy and support.

While many would call a diagnosis of advanced cancer their “worst day” Phuong has never lost her hope that she would beat her situation. She has maintained her sense of humor and her determination with whatever cancer threw at her, telling her friends and family “I’m going to be okay,” and backing it up with her beaming smile. Eventually one of her doctors

told her “You make giving bad news very easy.” Her doctors would refer new patients to her for support and information.

Her cell phone would ring and she would be coaching a newly diagnosed person or their spouse who were right in the middle of their “worst day.” The conversations would sometimes last hours but would begin and end with the similar refrain “it’s going to be okay.”

Phuong used her daughter’s activities to make sure she never fell into a trap of self-pity. “If I missed just one soccer game, play, or teacher’s conference it would be too easy to miss the next one.” According to her husband, Ed, “She has only shown worry when a fellow patient wasn’t doing well. She has only shown remorse when a fellow warrior earned their wings.

Always for others and never for herself and it has always made her more determined.”

The spirit of other warriors constantly remind her that “It’s going to be okay.”

s a saxophonist, flautist, and vocalist – the performing arts have always been an important part of Varetta’s life.

From the platform of concert halls, to the sanctuary of a church, or the center field of a prison yard – her purpose as an artist is to portray music that encourages the hearts of the listeners and soothes the soul.

She also serves as the director for Instruments of Praise, Inc. a non-profit organization that provides foundational training and skill development for young artists.

She’s written much of her own songs, as well as writing and arranging songs for other artists and the theme for a movie.

Wellness: the link to successful, productive, engaged UPS employees At UPS, our people are our most important asset. Which is why ensuring their health, wellness, and safety is ingrained in our culture – it’s a part of who we are. We invest millions of dollars in health and safety training every year because we want UPSers to make it home safely to their most important stop of the day: their home.

T

he concept that health, happiness, and productivity work together is one that most people can get behind. As an organization, UPS annually puts together a comprehensive wellness program. We train our hourly wellness champions to share this information.

Wellness Champions are hourly employees who volunteered to be the promoter of wellness for their workgroup. The challenge for UPS is, how do we help our workforce act upon the information?

The Occupational Health team, consisting of registered nurses, strategize and implement these wellness programs.

They work closely with the healthcare group, wellness champions, comprehensive health and safety process team, health and safety team, and operations management team to ensure that the wellness goal is achieved in all workgroups.

It’s easy to recognize wellness is achieved by developing healthy habits. By introducing the “5 Being Habits,” we are providing a vehicle for acting upon the information given through wellness communications.

The program is voluntary, and we recognize that it all comes down to personal choices. The key is to take health and wellness knowledge and turn it into actionable measures. It is important to note the habits are affirmative, and focus on what each individual can do.

The Five Being Habits are fitness, sleep, nutrition, stress management, and hydration. They are simple by design but cover a wide range of issues.

The Five Keys to the “5 Being Habits” Below are keys that we believe will lead to healthy lifestyle changes.

1) F itness – Keep your body moving.

Pick an activity you enjoy and establish a routine that gets you to your target heart rate for 30 minutes several times a week. Exercise controls weight, blood pressure, cholesterol, and releases stress. Choose the stairs, or a longer walk distance when practical, and integrate stretching into your daily routine.

2) Sleep – A wellrested mind and body perform best.

Establish good sleep practices.

Try to keep a sleep environment that is quiet, cool, and dark. Wind down naturally, so that you get quality deep sleep. Rest rejuvenates your body and mind so they can perform at their highest levels.

3) Hydration – Water is an essential element.

Drink 6 to 8 ten-ounce glasses of water a day.

Keep water handy when you work or play. Drink a glass when you wake up, before meals, and prior to strenuous work or recreational activities.

4) Nutrition – You are what you eat.

Eat a variety of foods from each food group and practice portion control.

It provides energy for an active lifestyle, protects against disease, and promotes a sharp mind.

Exercise portion control; a portion typically will fit in the palm of your hand. Words like grande and supersize are counter-productive to nutrition goals. Try to get 6 to 8 servings of colorful fruits and vegetables a day. It’s easy, just make them a big part of every meal.

5) S tress Management – Find a strategy for managing stress.

Identify stress triggers and recognize the difference between what you can and cannot control. Find a healthy release.

Managing stress prevents disease, improves relationships, and increases life expectancy. Deep breathing, laughter, exercise and stretching all allow the body to release built-up stress.

Voluntary self-assessment raises awareness In addition to sharing valuable information with employees, UPS Wellness Champions hand out voluntary self-assessment cards. Self-assessments cover each of the habits. Employees can generate up to five points by practicing each habit daily. Some points are better than no points, so it is not all or nothing. The integration of good habits into daily routines results in fewer negative habits and ultimately a healthier individual.

Competition drives engagement.

At UPS, we’re a competitive group.

Wellness Champions use this behavioral tendency to increase engagement in their wellness activities. Regular challenges, competitions, and recognition are an important element of our wellness strategy.

Employee Assistance Programs (EAP) In addition to our wellness program, UPS offers employee assistance at no cost as a part of our benefits plan.

Administered through Beacon Health this employee assistance program provides practical information, advice, and support for a wide range of issues, including: • A nxiety or depression • Child or senior care • Relationship or marital issues • A lcohol or substance abuse

• Bereavement • Parental challenges • Financial or legal concerns • Finding colleges

This program is key to making it easier for employees to get support when they are in a difficult emotional or physical situation that affects both their health and their work.

Wellness Activities, Health Fairs, and Family Day Wellness Champions in coordination with the operations management team, Comprehensive Health and Safety Supervisor, and Occupational Health Supervisor holds a monthly wellness activity and a yearly health fair or family day. These wellness events are attended by vendors in the community that provides education or information to UPS employees so they can become a better health consumer.

Moving beyond…

As the health status of the company changes, the strategy of the program will change as well. It is currently evolving from a wellness program to a wellbeing program – looking at not just the physical health of the employee but incorporating social, mental, emotional, and financial wellness of the person.

Hope & Advocacy Newly married at the age of 28 and immediately relocating to northern California, Phuong Ly Gallagher had a lot of big plans, including starting a family with her new husband (Ed) and their daughter (Taylor). A diagnosis of Stage 3C cancer 6 months later (and progress to Stage IV after another year) changed her path but did not change her outlook on life. This new path was one of determination and perseverance which eventually led her to advocacy and support.

huong’s cancer was entirely unexpected. There was no known history of the disease in her family, she was young, and healthy. Like many other early onset cancer survivors (diagnosed under 50), she was misdiagnosed as her doctor did not suspect that cancer could be the cause of the severe stomach pains, bleeding, and dramatic weight loss.

While many would call a diagnosis of advanced cancer their “worst day” Phuong has never lost her hope that she would beat her situation, or her faith in the excellent team of doctors shepherding her through. She has maintained her sense of humor and her determination with whatever cancer threw at her, telling her friends and family “I’m going to be okay,” and backing it up with her beaming smile.

Eventually one of her doctors told her “You make giving bad news very easy.”

Shortly after, her doctors would refer some new patients to her for support and information. Her cell phone would ring on a Saturday afternoon and she would be talking to a newly diagnosed person or their spouse who were right in the middle of “their worst day.” The conversations would sometimes last hours but would begin and end with the similar refrain “it’s going to be okay.”

Phuong used her daughter’s activities to make sure she never fell into a trap of self-pity. In her words “If I missed just one soccer game, or play, or teacher’s conference it would be far too easy to miss the next one.” According to her husband, Ed, “She has only shown worry when a fellow patient wasn’t doing well. She has only shown remorse

The fever from what Phuong thought was a summer bug prompted her husband to insist on a doctor’s visit.

They were shocked to find that she had dropped to a paltry 85 lbs. This forced a series of other doctor’s visits, including a colonoscopy, which revealed the tumor in her rectum.

Phuong has endured countless doctors’ visits in the last almost decade and has thrived despite the endless treatments of chemo, radiation, and surgeries due to not one, but five recurrences. She credits her devoted husband, Ed, and their daughter, Taylor, with getting her through the hardest times. She has an extensive support system including coworkers, friends, and family.

There are two non-profit organizations that have had significant impact on Phuong’s life of advocacy: The Colon Club and The WunderGlo Foundation.

Phuong was even more determined to raise awareness and provide support to fellow survivors when she was selected to be one of twelve featured survivors in the Colondar 2.0, an annual resource magazine published by the Colon Club. While she always had a passion for helping others, this became her voice and platform for advocacy and awareness. The WunderGlo Foundation is dedicated to funding research for a cure, granting 100% of funds raised through their capital campaign (The WunderGlo Project) to world-renown doctors for their continued research.

Their #LoveLife philosophy truly resonated with Phuong. She realized that this was how she had faced cancer, put into beautiful concise words.

The spirit of the other warriors continue to inspire Phuong and her family, constantly reminding her and others that “It’s going to be okay.”

We invite all Man Cave participants to join us for the “Lunch with Elected Officials and Community Leaders” segment. This was a very popular segment of the Man Cave last year. Attendees will have an opportunity to engage in various round table discussions lead by local and state elected officials discussing important health issues. During lunch, elected officials and community leaders will share how they are advocating for public policies that address the unique health care needs of men in the community.
