SoCal Women’s Conference 20th Anniversary On behalf of the State of California, I am pleased to commemorate the SoCal Women’s Conference on 20 years of remarkable service in support of the health and wellbeing of communities across Southern California.

Every year, the SoCal Women’s Conference acts as a beacon of information, innovation, and inspiration for the hundreds of attendees that enter its halls, who in turn help spread knowledge and power across the region. By building partnership between community-based organizations, businesses, and civic leaders, the SoCal Women’s Conference continues to lift up a diverse set of voices that are united in supporting the needs of all Californians. In this mission, I want to especially applaud the work of Lena Kennedy, who two decades ago turned her bold idea into the impactful event we see before us.

On this milestone of an occasion, please accept my best wishes for another wonderful conference and for many more just like it in the years ahead.

Community Award

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Pasadena Alumnae Chapter

Founded in 1903 and located in Arcadia, Methodist Hospital of Southern California is a full-service community hospital with 348 licensed beds. The hospital offers advanced cardiovascular services including cardiac catheterization, electrophysiology, and open-heart surgery.

Los Angeles County has designated Methodist Hospital as both a heart attack and stroke receiving center as well an Emergency Department Approved for Pediatrics.

The hospital also offers a variety of services in orthopedics, neurosurgery, obstetrics, and many other medical specialties. As many as 40,000 patients are treated annually in the Emergency Department, while the hospital staff delivers more than 1,800 babies annually and typically has more than 16,000 patient admissions each year.

Purpose Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated is a private, not-for-profit organization whose purpose is to provide assistance and support through established programs in local communities throughout the world. The sorority currently has 1,000 collegiate and alumnae chapters located in the United States, Canada, Japan (Tokyo and Okinawa), Germany, the Virgin Islands, Bermuda, the Bahamas, Jamaica, and the Republic of Korea.

Mission Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated is an organization of college-educated women committed to the constructive development of its members and to public service with a primary focus on the Black community.

The Pasadena Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was chartered on January 27, 1961 to serve the greater Pasadena/Altadena and surrounding areas. In realizing our mission, our organization provides an extensive array of public service initiatives through our Five-Point Programmatic Thrust of: Economic Development, Educational Development, International Awareness and Involvement, Political Awareness and Involvement, and Physical and Mental Health.

Our conference is an event that is of, by, and for the community. A thriving community is filled with dedicated volunteers who give of themselves.

Similarly, our conference is powered by incredible volunteers who give of themselves year after year.

T

he lifeblood of a nonprofit organization or event is its volunteers. Consistent with that, an amazing team of evolving volunteers has made the SoCal Women’s Conference the premier San Gabriel Valley health conference for 21 years. Our volunteers bring their ideas, their time, their energy, their connections, their spirit, and simply their wonderful selves.

Our conference is an event that is of, by, and for the community. A thriving community is filled with dedicated volunteers who give of themselves. Similarly, our conference is powered by incredible volunteers who give of themselves year after year.

We often hear that much of success simply entails just showing up. That axiom certainly applies to our conference. Our success can be directly traced to the many volunteers who keep showing up year after year.

In the midst of busy personal and work lives, it takes someone special to carve time to give back to their community. We have been blessed over the years to have a group of special volunteers.

Mere words cannot do justice to the depth of my gratitude to the many wonderful volunteers who make this conference happen. Some have been with the conference since the beginning 21 years ago. I want to specifically acknowledge and thank from the bottom of my heart: Mrs. Sam Yarbrough has been a source of inspiration and strength from day one of this conference. She advised me in ways no one else could have and made introductions to other great volunteers.

One of Mrs. Yarbrough’s first introductions was to the

Gwen McMullins who is a member of the Pasadena chapter of Delta Sigma Theta sorority. Not only did Mrs. McMullins become a volunteer, but also, she brought the Deltas. The Deltas have been dedicated volunteers who have shared their expertise, served as moderators, chaired committees, and provided educational training for all 21 years of the conference. The Deltas show up and show out. Diane Franklin and DeBorrah Carter also started volunteering with the conference 21 years ago.

So many many other hardworking volunteers have made this conference happen over the last 21 years.

Each and every one of you holds a special place in my heart and I thank you.

The last two years have brought unimaginable change and disruption to the world we knew. COVID-19 has caused not only the largest global health pandemic in 100 years, but also the greatest global economic crisis in 90 years. How we live, work, and play has been altered – likely in permanent ways that we will fully realize only in years to come.

The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed longstanding inequalities in so many aspects of our society and our world. All members of our society do NOT have access to quality health care. All members of our society do NOT have access to high speed Internet, which leads to commensurate educational, vocational, and recreational consequences. All members of our society do NOT have the financial resources to withstand a figurative or literal body blow.

COVID-19 has also exposed and, in many instances, made worse fault lines in our society. We have learned of the occupational risks endured by essential workers.

We have learned of the vulnerability and consequences of limited or no access to health care as well as preexisting conditions. We have learned who has the luxury and safety of working from home. We have learned of the through line from slavery to today in so many areas – while no longer “Jim Crow” separate, our society remains stubbornly unequal. We have

learned of American historical atrocities that have been deliberately covered up and erased from history books.

Our challenge is transforming all that learning into action.

COVID-19 has caused us to rethink what really matters and who really matters. Any list of what matters begins with our health. If we have it, we have just about everything; if we don’t, we have little.

COVID-19 has tragically reminded us that we are all in this life together. We are our brother’s keeper. We are our sister’s keeper. Contagious diseases respect no national boundaries, personal boundaries, or other artificial boundaries. Accordingly, personal health and community healthy are intertwined. Maintaining our personal health contributes to the health of our communities. Additionally, we cannot allow ourselves to be disillusioned or distracted by those whose sense of the “greater good” begins and ends with their selfish selves as they vehemently, and sometimes violently, oppose measures to address COVID-19.

Shortly after COVID-19 changed our world in ways we will not fully know or appreciate for years, the barbaric murder of George Floyd exposed additional, deeply troubling inequalities in our judicial and penal systems.

These systems have often treated Blacks as second class citizens who are underserving of equal treatment or equal justice.

The stunning, unspeakable 9:29 of video of a murder on a public street in the middle of the day vindicated the decades long, unheard cries by Blacks of police brutality. Far too often, for far too long, too many police officers treated Blacks as an occupying force would, rather than as citizens to be protected and served. The unfortunate realities exposed by the George Floyd murder extend to mistreatment of other racial minorities, women, religious minorities, the trans community, and others. As if we needed another shock to the system, the last two years have also brought an all-out assault on the pillars of our democracy. As a disappointingly large segment of our society has contorted themselves into believing that a lost election means a stolen election, those of us who believe in our democracy are obligated to defend our democracy. We cannot allow those with ulterior motives to equate lawful protests against mistreatment with insurrections against our government and our democracy. We should fight with every fiber of our being any twisted notion that attempts to dictate which citizens are or are not worthy of the right to vote and, more chillingly, who gets to count or not count the votes cast.

Ultimately, the challenge becomes what can we do individually and collectively to create a more just society in which equality of opportunity and equality of treatment is a reality, rather than an empty, obligatory but meaningless “greeting card” type statement. More specifically, what actions do we take based on what we have learned? How do we bridge the divisive mindset of “them” vs. “us?” How do we realize that when we work together, we can create a synergy that results in 1 plus 1 equaling 3? How do we realize that our world is not a “zero sum game” in which someone has to lose for someone to win? If we think of ourselves as all being on the same human team, we can all win together. I hope this conference promotes that spirit.

We need to hold ourselves and each other accountable.

We cannot allow our limited, collective attention span to quickly move on to the next shiny object as longstanding problems fester and remain unsolved (often for lack of will, rather than lack of options).

We need our media to focus on facts, accuracy, and transparency, rather than selectively fixating when

certain people go missing. We need our corporations to recognize that no ethnicity, gender, or religion holds a monopoly on talent or excellence and to recognize that mistreatment of their workers directly or indirectly means mistreatment of their customers. We need our government entities to serve the people, not only the well-connected or those with deep pockets. We need our nonprofits to keep on doing what they are doing and to be appropriately supported. Individually, we need to embrace the notion that “if it’s to be, it’s up to me.”

In the midst of all that has

dramatically changed in our world during the last two years, we remain committed to maintaining a constant in the form of our conference.

We remain committed to the health and well-being of our community by bringing information to help everyone lead their best, healthiest lives. We remain committed to marginalized communities, to making a difference, and to rising together step by step. I thank you for sticking with us and allowing us to be of service to you and our community. To our health and 21 years more!

wenty years! My where does the time go? It’s hard to believe that for twenty years this conference has been bringing together many, many people, organizations, and medical professionals. Through this conference encouragement and hope have been provided for thousands of people.

We continue to grow and bring new ideas each year. We have grown and not only added our ‘Man Cave’ but this year we have added our young women’s version of the ‘Man Cave’. Both are places where men and women can meet in safe environment and discuss issues important to them that they might not otherwise be comfortable discussing. We offer educational information on social justice and cancer as well as exceptional speakers on a variety of topics which makes a partnership made for success.

We encourage you to attend our Fashion Show where we will be highlighting the latest in fashion, sure to showcase something for everyone. No 2021 health conference would be complete without a discussion related to COVID and its impact on our new way of living because it is going to be around awhile.

This conference is a wonderful opportunity to come together, have a fun filled day but more importantly obtain information about health from industry and health experts. Many times people, especially women are so busy taking care of others they neglect themselves. This applies, not only to health, but to beauty as well. I believe when you feel good one tends to look good and when you look good one tends to feel good. They go together.

Conference Chairs Hon. Kathryn Barger

Supervisor, L.A. County 5th District

S

upervisor Kathryn Barger proudly serves the residents of the 5th District – Los Angeles County’s largest – spanning 2,800 square miles, which includes 22 cities and 70 unincorporated communities in the Antelope, San Gabriel, San Fernando, Crescenta, and Santa Clarita Valleys.

Kathryn was born and raised in the 5th District and comes from a family with deep roots in public service. She is married to a retired sheriff’s deputy and lives in the San Gabriel Valley.

Dedicated to providing effective, responsive representation to the residents of L.A. County, Kathryn began her career in public service as a college intern in the office of former Supervisor Antonovich and rose to become his chief deputy in 2001, where she served until her election to the Board of Supervisors in 2016. She both served as Chair of the Board and was reelected for her second term in 2020.

Building upon her work from her time as chief policy advisor on health, mental health, social services, and children’s issues, Kathryn continues to advocate for services and programs to improve the quality of life for foster children, seniors, veterans, those with disabilities, and those with mental illness.

Lisa Stevens

isa Stevens is Aon’s Chief People Officer and Head of Global Human Capital Solutions. As CPO, she is responsible for creating, implementing and leading the strategies that empower Aon’s 50,000 employees across 120 countries to fully align with the client-centric Aon United mission. Stevens also leads Aon’s Human Capital Solutions business which provides clients with a powerful mix of data, analytics and advice to help them make better workforce decisions.

Stevens joined Aon from Wells Fargo after a 29-year career including heading Business Banking, Small Business product solutions and Head of the Western U.S. geography, leading 34,000 employees and 2,700 branch offices across a 24-state region.

Mistress of Ceremonies Wendy Burch KTLA-5

W

endy Burch is an Emmy Award winning television journalist, acclaimed professional writer, and inspiring motivational speaker.

With a career in journalism spanning three decades, she has delivered thousands of live television news reports: everything from breaking news – to high profile court cases – to star-studded red-carpet events.

As one of the most respected and recognized reporters in Southern California, Wendy has had many memorable moments while reporting for the award-winning KTLA Morning News. A handful of those experiences have gone ‘viral’ and have made Wendy an internet sensation.

Burch has gone on to receive numerous awards and honors, including seven Emmy Awards. Wendy was also the recipient of the Gracie Allen Award and the Genii Award and the Excellence in Journalism Award from the American Women of Radio & Television. She currently resides in Los Angeles, California, and is a single mom to her son, Brady, and their golden retriever, Murphy Brown.

Invocation Pastor Jean Burch

Community Bible Church of Greater Pasadena

P

astor Jean Burch is the senior pastor of Community Bible Church of Greater Pasadena, located on the border of Pasadena and Altadena, California where she has served for 20 years. She is simply and affectionately known as “Pastor Jean.”

In addition to serving as senior pastor she is also the President of the Community Bible Community Development Corporation. The CBCDC provides 446 units of affordable housing and social services for hundreds of residents in Pasadena. Pastor Jean is a founding member, past president and current board member of the Clergy Community Coalition. She also currently serves on the Fuller Theological Seminary Board of Trustees. She is the recipient of a numerous awards including the 2020 California 41st Assembly District Women of the Year Award. Pastor Jean earned an M.A. in Global Leadership from Fuller Seminary and a B.S. from Biola University in Organizational Leadership. She is a proud mother and grandmother and is blessed to have her family in ministry with her at CBC.

H

e never met a mic that he didn’t like. Former KJLH Radio Personality Geoff Gil is making big moves in the Real Estate world. “I witnessed a shift in the entertainment biz that caught a lot of people off guard. Featured Artists Exhibiting at the Conference Riea Owens I create what I create, because I love the human form and people of this planet. All I want to paint is people.

I spent a career in entertainment advertising honing my Photoshop skills. This is where I learned to paint. Although it was painting electronically, I applied that knowledge to conventional painting with a brush, paint and canvas.

I have yet to commit to one medium and probably never will. I paint in oils, acrylics, watercolors and pastels and digital works.

There are times when, what flows of the tip of the brush is serendipitous and takes me aback. When that happens I just have to say “Whoa” where did that come from!

My favorite part of the process is somewhere in the middle. It hard to know where to start and sometimes hard to know when to stop. But the middle seems to flow.

“Wake up and Stay Woke: Running for Life!”

Entrepreneur and civic leader E. Faye Williams is an accomplished attorney, businesswoman and teacher. Williams studied at several universities, and holds several advanced degrees. She earned her law degree from Howard University, and has worked as a counsel to Congress and a professor of international law at the Southern University Law Center. Additionally, she holds both a master’s degree and a doctorate in public administration. She became the first African American to run a competitive congressional campaign in Louisiana, losing by about 5,000 votes.

An active church parishioner and minister, Williams completed a candidacy for a doctorate of ministry at Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington D.C. Inspired by the Million Man March, Williams started Natural Health Options and Carver/Curtis Products, where she serves as president and CEO. Her companies hold exclusive rights to produce the natural health remedies pioneered by George Washington Carver and his assistant, Austin W. Curtis. Williams also helped organize the Million Family March in 2000. She remains active in several civic organizations.

She sits on the board of Partners for Peace, is an adviser to the Woman’s Health Network and Council on Nutrition, and works on the steering committee for Change the Name. Williams is the recipient of numerous awards for her activism and service to community.

Dr. Williams’ latest book is Dick Gregory: Wake Up and Stay Woke: Running for Life. A must read, Dr. Williams’ written portrait tells many interesting stories of Dick Gregory’s life as an unwavering activist, comedian, health enthusiast and purveyor of good music. Williams says, “There is still great interest in everything about Dick Gregory.” His life experiences spanning over eight decades remain relevant to today’s events and political oppositions. His fiery speeches continue to influence and ignite leaders young and old, and many comedians pray to write and deliver jokes with his prowess. This being said, there is more to Dick Gregory than meets the average eye and Dr. Williams qualifies to share his unique and appealing attributes less known to the public.

A spiritual philosophy reverberates, “You attract what you are.” No truer words are spoken regarding this dynamic duo.

Dr. Williams refers her readers to the commonality she and Mr. Gregory possess starting with childhood. Both were introduced to the terrors of domestic abuse in their youth. Each are members of large sibling tribes and understand what it means to live within the boundaries of limited financial resources. Their secondary school education was inadequate, and racial inequity a prominent stain on their backdrops, yet both overcame these obstacles.

Victoria graduated from Cal State Los Angeles as a Registered Dietitian and has both her Bachelors and Masters Degree in Nutrition. Victoria has just completed and published a nutrition textbook and she is on the faculty at Pasadena City College and Cal State Los Angeles. Victoria also has a Certificate in Adult Weight Management with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Eleni Kounalakis California Lieutenant Governor Ambassador Eleni Kounalakis was sworn in as the 50th Lieutenant Governor of California by Governor Gavin Newsom on January 7th, 2019. She is the first woman elected to the post.

From 2010 to 2013, Kounalakis served as US Ambassador to the Republic of Hungary and in 2015 published her acclaimed memoir, “Madam Ambassador, Three Years of Diplomacy, Dinner Parties and Democracy in Budapest” (The New Press).

Prior to her service, Kounalakis spent 18 years as an executive at one of California’s most respected housing development firms, AKT Development. Throughout her career, she served on numerous boards and commissions including California’s First 5 Commission, the San Francisco War Memorial, San Francisco Port Commission and the Association of American Ambassadors.

Eleni Kounalakis graduated from Dartmouth College in 1989, earned her MBA from U.C. Berkeley’s Haas School of Business in 1992 and holds an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from the American College of Greece. She is married to Dr. Markos Kounalakis and the couple has two teenage sons, Neo and Eon.

Evelin Martinez Bank of America Business Banking Manager Evelin Martinez has been in financial services for 28 years and is currently a Business Banking Manager for Bank of America. Evelin is passionate about motivating and influencing others to achieve what they didn’t think they could. Evelin serves on the board of HOPE, an organization focused on the empowerment of women and minority youth.

Pamela Weatherspoon Huntington Hospital Vice President, Enterprise, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion| Pamela Weatherspoon is the Vice President, Enterprise, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at Huntington Hospital. Prior to joining Huntington Hospital, she was the director of diversity and inclusion at Jersey City Medical Center for two years, and prior to that she led diversity and community engagement at Legacy Health.

Ms. Weatherspoon has been a tireless advocate for creating positive equitable change for those who are most marginalized and/or underserved for almost 20 years. She has received local and national awards for her work in community organizing and advocacy for equity.

Ms. Weatherspoon received her bachelor’s degree from Portland State University and her MBA from Concordia University.

• E mergency use authorization (EUA) continues for ages 18+ by Moderna and Johnson & Johnson.

• T he CDC recommends booster shots for select recipients of the Moderna or Pfizer vaccine, six months after completing vaccination.

• Eligibility includes those ages 65+ and those ages 18-64 with underlying health conditions or at high risk for occupational or institutional exposure.

Welcome to our 2021 Man Cave Event – Our Health Is Our Wealth!

A

s with last year, this year has been full of trials and tribulations for our country and for everyone around the globe. But, we’re still here. Again, it is the hope of the Man Cave board that this year’s event will provide each of you with insights on how to enhance the quality of your life, maintain your health, and remain engaged in your community.

We continue to face a destructive virus that has attacked millions and threatened everyone in our community and the world. Many hoped and thought that the COVID-19 pandemic would be over by now, but it is still here and it continues to disrupt so many aspects of our lives. Even though vaccines have been developed, many continue to refuse to get vaccinated. Once again, COVID-19 is not the only problem we faced this year. Social injustice continues to be a major issue.

In response to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, we are holding a Virtual Man Cave event this year. We will feature presentations by experts on the latest developments in the treatment and prevention of diseases and conditions that pertain especially to men, such as prostate cancer, as well as general diseases like heart disease and the challenges of caring for those with Alzheimer’s disease. We are also tackling social injustice head

on. There will be discussions on social and environmental justice. The goal is for the community and law enforcement to have a dialogue and strategize about how to keep communities safe.

In closing, this year is the 21st year anniversary of the So Cal Women’s Conference and our 8th Man Cave event. You’re in store for a great experience, so have a great time, relax, and enjoy the ride, the Swag Box, question and answer prizes, and many outstanding speakers who will provide you with valuable information that will assist you in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Attendees will have a chance to interact with dynamic speakers who are engaging and knowledgeable in their respective areas. He is the principal for projects managed by TCA, which included The City Of Pasadena, Los Angeles Urban League, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, Pasadena Unified School District, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. Los Angeles Tourism and Convention Board and Walmart among others.

He presently serves as a member of the board of Pasadena City College Foundation.

He is the immediate past Treasurer of the National Association of Black Journalist, Los Angeles Chapter. He is a former Board Member of Foothill Workforce Development Board; He is the immediate past President of North Lake Village Business Association in Pasadena; Former Treasurer of the Board of Pasadena Chamber of Commerce; Former Board Director of Executive Service Corps and is a former Board Director of Pasadena Community College Area Citizen Oversight Committee in Pasadena, California.

He was the former Senior Director of Media Relations for Quincy Jones’ Qwest Records. Prior to joining Qwest Records, Carter was Manager of Publicity for Warner Bros. Records.

Albert is the founding pastor of Fellowship Church – one of the fastest-growing multiethnic churches in the United States. He began in ministry pastoring just a few families at Sweet Home Church in Mississippi before serving the historic Lake Avenue Church in Pasadena, California. Hearing the call from God to plant a church, Albert and his wife, LaRosa, launched Fellowship Monrovia in January 2012. In its short history, this gospel-centered, multiethnic, intergenerational church has already established a solid foothold in the region for life transformation to the glory and honor of Christ.

As a dynamic communicator, Albert is passionate about sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ both to the local church and the global community. Butch has been through many phases of the disease with his mother and has been able to share his story with others that may be faced with care for a loved one in the future. Juan Cloy MISSISSIPPI HINDS COUNTY CONSTABLE Mr. Cloy is a 26 ½ year veteran Police Officer and Instructor. Ten of those years were served with the FBI, traveling the country working cases. Mr. Cloy’s company trains officers from all over the country on how to have more positive interactions with the citizens that they serve.

Sean Kennedy L.A. SHERIFF’S DEPT. OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE Sean Kennedy leads three live-client clinics focused on fostering systemic reform of the Los Angeles juvenile justice system through ongoing research, discussion and advocacy. He is a member of the Los Angeles county sheriff department civilian oversight committee. Kennedy is also a former federal public defender.

Pastor Tyrone Skinner METROPOLITAN BAPTIST CHURCH Reverend Tyrone Skinner has pastored Metropolitan Baptist Church, Altadena, CA. 31 years. In 2020, he was awarded the Doctor of Ministry Degree from New York Theological Seminary. Pastor Skinner has served as President of the Western Baptist State Convention’s Congress of Christian Education for 15 years.

Jasmin Thomas PASADENA POLICE PATROL OFFICER Jasmin was raised in Pasadena until about middle school then moved with her family to Monrovia. She has worked in Pasadena since age 14 at summer day camps. Jasmin ran track with UC Riverside and graduated with a bachelors degree in political science.

An award-winning attorney, advocate, legal and social issues commentator, talk show host and producer, Areva is an audience favorite on a long list of shows from Dr. Phil, Good Morning America to ABC Live to World News Tonight.

Areva is a CNN/HLN Legal Analyst whose television credits include cohosting CBS’ daytime syndicated talk show Face the Truth and The Doctors, an Emmy Awardwinning talk and informational show in its 14th season. Shantell Kennedy MISTRESS OF CEREMONIES A native of Pasadena, Shantell Marie Kennedy comes from a family that believes in community service. Hear their experience about how education, action, and community facilitated thriving, beyond fear of the unknown, and a passion to ensure that no one faces cancer alone.

Alison Wong, PhD, LMFT, is the Program Director at Cancer Support Community Pasadena. She is published in the area of psycho-oncology in journals such as Social Work in Healthcare Journal, Supportive Care in Cancer, and the Canadian Journal of Urology. Dr. Wong is also a licensed marriage and family therapist and has a small private practice in Los Angeles.

Natalie Smalley is a breast cancer survivor and member of Cancer Support Community Pasadena’s Board of Directors, serving in the areas of marketing and outreach as well as diversity, equity and inclusion. She is a Walt Disney Branded Television executive and author of I Have Breast Cancer Now What? A Cancer Support Tool published in 2020 with the loving support of her husband, Gamal Smalley.

Irina Melkumyan is a Relationship Manager with City National Bank’s Personal & Business Banking team, based in the Hollywood Office, working very closely with the entertainment industry. Ms. Melkumyan works directly with clients to proactively manage and develop their business and personal banking relationships.

Ms. Melkumyan is fluent in both Armenian and Russian. She is actively involved in the community. She has been working with St. Baldrick’s Foundation since 2014, using her voice and skills to help raise money and awareness for children with cancer. She is passionate about helping nonprofit organizations and serves on the board for a local nonprofit, Troublemaker Foundation. As the chief of Young Women’s Commission, Ms. Melkumyan also uses her time and energy to educate, mentor and inspire young entrepreneurs to achieve their goals and dreams authentically.

Jacque James

Certified Personal Trainer, Certificated Pilates Instructor MOVEMENT Jacque was raised in Pasadena, and graduated from Blair High School, Home of the Vikings. She is the Health Committee Chair of the NAACP Pasadena Branch.

Jacque explained that as long as she can remember, a moving body felt better than sitting still. As a youth she was very active. She enjoyed gymnastics, ran track and played hardball and softball.

She is up for a challenge. In an instant, she will call out and challenge all of her grandchildren to a good run and hunt you down super soaker water gun fight.

Jacque teaches Pilates Mat and Pilates Reformer. Her weekly schedule is filled with Zoom and in-person one-on-one training and group sessions. Jacque says the body and muscle function amazes her. She loves to share what she knows about the body with clients and her friends. She likes to bring awareness to her clients, and she enjoys teaching functional body principles.

Fashion Show 2021 Greetings! This year, for Fall 2021, we bring to you “This Is Your Season!”

During the last 23 months a lot has changed; we are living a different normal.

However, we know clothes can change our attitude, disposition and brighten up our day without having anything to say. Clothes can even Fashion Show make others smile, oh yes! You know what I am talking Executive about, as you strut in your season, whether it is Winter, Director Elizabeth Ellis Spring, Summer or Fall, when you choose the right outfit it helps you to bring it All. Some of you are working from home meeting after meeting with presentations on Zoom, while you set up an office in your bedroom; knowing good and well from head to waist you have to bring it or you might be displaced. We want you to exude confidence, peace, control, poise and a readiness to do the task at hand; with clothes that are fun, casual, business, professional, and transforming. It is up to you to be!

Today we will show you clothes that can do just that! Clothes that can be worn in all seasons. Jean wear, sweat suit, clothes that can be worn on a long drive exploring the coast or to a business meeting and so much more. You should feel comfortable and stylish at the same time. Valerie Johnson is a Fashion Coordinator, Artist, Image Consultant and Interior Decorator. She has been in business and in the fashion industry for the last 25 years.

In 1990 Valerie attended LA Trade Tech where she studied fashion, interior design and merchandising.

She became a instructor for FIDM (The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising) where she taught and recruited students in high schools and colleges.
