Welcome!

I value quality of life, and I know you do, too. I want to be healthy, but it is a struggle. I intend to be healthy so that I can optimize my talents and abilities.

I strive to be healthy so that I can enjoy my family and friends. So the key question becomes: how can I translate my intent into motivation that leads to positive action?

Sometimes I walk by the mirror and think, “Who the hell is that?” In my mind I look one way, but when I see my reflection, I don’t recognize the person I see. So, I have hired a personal trainer (Jarius Ellis) to help me exercise. I made this decision because I finally realized that I needed help to get healthy. I had to invest in myself.

A

s the years go by, we learn, grow and change. Sometimes, we learn, grow and change in ways that we didn’t expect to happen; those events can be positive, mixed, or negative. Other times, we want to change, but can’t seem to make that change happen, and we are challenged to explain why. Life’s events offer us an opportunity for reflection and greater understanding.

Actions speak louder than words.

We say we love ourselves, but do our actions reflect that truth? It is easy to be overcome by circumstances, to let circumstances control us rather than the other way around. Every aspect of health – physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual – form the core of a good quality of life.

There are consequences for everything we do; some are immediate, some are delayed. Having a personal trainer helps me maintain accountability with my true goals and keeps me on my path toward optimal health. I am on a journey that seems to be long, but gaining my health and my youthful love of life, I know I can get to my destination one step at a time. I host this conference for you, but for me as well. I want to be an example that is empowering and life changing! I believe in this conference and it is changing women’s lives – I am successful in other ways – I want to be successful with my health! Bariatric support groups meet in Lewis Hall every first, third and fourth Monday, 7:30-8:30 p.m. On the first Monday, facilitators meet with patients who are 0-12 months out from surgery. The third Monday is for people who are more than 12 months out from surgery. The fourth Monday is dedicated to lap-band patients.

Hon. Judy Chu U.S. Congresswoman, California 32nd District

R

epresentative Judy Chu was elected in July 2009 to the U.S. House of Representatives as the Representative of California’s 32nd District, which includes East Los Angeles and the San Gabriel Valley. She

immediately got to work representing the interests of her constituents, voting on several environmental bills and working through the night on her first day in office during a marathon debate on the health care reform bill.

In the 112th Congress, Rep. Chu serves on the House Judiciary Committee, where she is a member of the Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security and the Intellectual Property, Competition, and the Internet subcommittees. She is also a member of the House Small Business Committee, where she is leading the Contracting and Workforce Subcommittee as the Ranking Democrat and serves on the Economic Growth, Tax and Capital Access Subcommittee.

In 2011, she was elected as the Chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC).

She has been heavily involved in crafting legislation to create new jobs, help small businesses and improve our nation’s education and immigration systems.

Congresswoman Chu’s career in politics spans 24 years. Prior to her election to Congress she served three terms as the Assemblymember representing the 49th District, where she chaired the important Assembly Appropriations Committee. A lifelong educator, Congresswoman Chu taught community college classes in Los Angeles and East Los Angeles for 20 years. She holds a Ph.D. in psychology and a B.A. in mathematics.

eena Hostovich is executive vice president of Lockton Insurance Brokers, LLC and a Los Angeles business leader who is actively involved in the community. As Lockton’s top

Teena has been named one of 50 Fabulous Women of Pasadena, 50 “Women to Watch” internationally by Business Insurance, “Top 40 Women in Los Angeles” in the “Executive of the Year” category by the Los Angeles Business Journal, and Risk and Insurance Magazine’s 2011 Power Broker® and Responsibility Leader®. She also has been recognized by the California State Legislature as “Outstanding Corporate Woman” for her contributions to the community, which have focused on organizations committed to diversity,

the arts, at-risk girls and their families, as well as the professional development of young women.

Her positive leadership, intellectual creativity, integrity and strong work ethic has served as an inspiration to young women she has mentored, many of whom are now in senior positions in the industry. She represents the ideology that there are no boundaries to what a woman can achieve in business. Teena is Presidential Partner to Barack Obama; Trustee of the Clinton Foundation and on the Strategic Planning Committee for Huntington Hospital. She is teaching at USC Marshall School of Business as a CAP Mentor. She also teaches workshops on issues facing women in the corporate world.

olombra Ingram is the quintessential woman of power, passion and purpose, as referenced in the name of her brainchild organization, I’m Every Woman. Born in Columbia SC, Solombra relocated

to Atlanta, Georgia where she proudly joined the Alumni of Spelman College, having earned a Bachelor’s degree with a major in English and a minor in media communications. She also is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.

bi-monthly IEW Book Club meetings, Women on Wellness Seminars, Women In Position meetings, Gems to Jewels 6-week Mentorship Program for young girls ages 12-18, and the bi-annual I’m Every Woman Women’s Conference.

Driven by her faith in God and commitment to service to others, in 2004, Solombra founded the non-profit organization I’m Every Woman (IEW), which is dedicated to providing a nurturing and supportive environment that addresses the need for education, empowerment, information and resources for women, young girls and high risk families. Hon. Jacque Robinson Vice Mayor, City of Pasadena

V

ice Mayor Jacque Robinson is serving her second term as member of the Pasadena City Council, District 1. First elected in 2007

at age 28, Jacque became the youngest elected female in the history of the city. Born and raised in Pasadena, Jacque is a product of the district she now represents. Her policy initiatives and interests lie in economic and business development, public safety, transportation, and youth violence prevention. Ms. Robinson has worked professionally on electoral campaigns for multiple labor unions and taught as adjunct faculty at Pasadena City College. She is Chair of the Foothill Workforce Investment Policy Board and a Commissioner to the Bob Hope Airport Authority.

Jacque is a graduate of now President Barack Obama’s Hopefund – Yes We Can Training Program and the Los

Angeles African American Women’s Public Policy Institute. She is an active member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. In 2011, Ms. Robinson was selected as one of four U.S. fellows for the New Generation Seminar at the East-West Center studying Asia Pacific-U.S. policy and was chosen by the American Council of Young Political Leaders for international exchange to China. She is the recipient of multiple community awards and recognitions including being featured as 1 of 15 “Power Women of Pasadena” in Pasadena Magazine.

A proud public school graduate, she earned her B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley and M.A. in Public Administration from California State University.

Hon. John J. Kennedy Councilmember, City of Pasadena

A

s a leader of complex and diverse organizations, John J. Kennedy has significant experience in the public, private and nonprofit sectors. He has devoted his life to community service as a civic leader and community organizer.

Since September 2011, Mr. Kennedy has served as the Senior Vice President of one of the oldest and most respected civil rights organizations in the United States. Prior to that position, Mr. Kennedy was Director of Special Projects for Southern California Edison (SCE) for seven years.

Locally, he worked in the Finance, City Attorney, Police and Public Works Departments of the City of Pasadena. He served as Founder and Secretary of the Pasadena Police Foundation; Chair of Community Health Alliance of Pasadena; Board Member of the Pasadena Child Health Foundation; Chair of the Community Development Committee; Co-Chair of the Library Task Force for Alternate Funding; and Chair of the Developers’ Selection Committee for Heritage Square. He wrote Pasadena’s first recycling ordinance, the Pasadena taxicab ordinance and waste haulers ordinance.

At the age of 25, he was the youngest person to serve as President of the Pasadena Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. He has dedicated much of his spare time to community organizing and working to elect and support Democratic Candidates.

Mr. Kennedy is a board member of the Tom Bradley Legacy Foundation at UCLA; Black Alumni Council at the University of Southern California (USC); and serves on the National Finance Committee for the President of the United States.

A Pasadena native, Mr. Kennedy was Student Body President at Blair High School and a Student Senator while at USC. He holds dual degrees from USC in International Relations and Social Science Communications (Economics) and several professional certificates as well as his Juris Doctor Degree from Howard University School of Law.

Stephanie Fajuri Supervising Attorney, Disability Rights Legal Center’s Cancer Legal Resource Center (CLRC)

A

s CLRC Supervising Attorney for CLRC, Ms. Fajuri provides legal services to people with cancer-related legal issues, presents educational seminars throughout the nation, oversees the CLRC’s telephone assistance line and serves as the primary supervisor for CLRC volunteers and externs. Additionally, Ms. Fajuri is a member of the American Bar Association’s Breast Cancer Advocacy Task Force, the American Cancer Society’s Los Angeles Regional Leadership Council, the Orange

County Cancer Coalition, and the Los Angeles ACCESS to Care Coalition.

Ms. Fajuri received a B.A. in History at the University of Michigan, and earned her Juris Doctorate at Illinois Institute of Technology Chicago-Kent College of Law. Ms. Fajuri is a member of the State Bars of California and New York.

She is also a member of Legal Voices, a chorus affiliated with the L.A. Lawyers Philharmonic.

Clifford Daniels Senior Vice President / Chief Strategy Officer, Methodist Hospital of Southern California

r. Daniels is responsible for strategic planning, business development, physician alignment, community outreach, marketing and public relations. Prior to joining Methodist, Mr. Daniels worked for six years as Chief Development

Officer at Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs. Mr. Daniels attended UCLA, where he majored in Economics. He lives in Rancho Cucamonga with his wife and four children.

Claudie Kiti Bustamante Covered California Public Information Officer, Los Angeles County

C

laudie Kiti Bustamante is responsible for raising awareness of Covered California and implementing public education and outreach strategies to effectively reach underserved communities.

Prior to joining Covered California in 2013, Ms. Kiti Bustamante was the Program Director of Sisters in Motion at Black Women for Wellness in Leimert Park. Prior to moving to Los Angeles, Ms. Kiti Bustamante worked

in Sacramento with the New America Foundation’s California Program serving as liaison to the state legislature, playing a vital role in raising the organization’s profile at the state level, and with the media promoting New America’s varied public policy issues and managing their Fellows Program.

Ms. Bustamante was an education consultant to former California State Senator Deborah Ortiz (D-Sacramento).

Robina Smith, MD

D

r. Robina Smith is a highly trained Oncoplastic Breast Cancer Surgeon. She is a leading expert in the field of Breast Oncology including Treatment, Risk Factor Reduction, High Risk Screening, Breast Education and Awareness.

She has been called by some a “lifesaver”, “a miracle worker” and “a gifted artist” for her unique ability to combine her God-given talents as an artist with her passionate surgical ability to help women overcome some of the physical challenges they face during their surgical treatment. She is fellowship-trained in Oncoplastic Breast surgery which is an innovative new surgical technique that combines advanced cancer removal with plastics surgery techniques. Her years as a freelance Medical Illustrator and Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon has given her an unusually unique experience with which she can effectively communicate, diagnose and remedy a woman’s complex problem while trying to preserve her self-image.

St. Jude Medical Center Dr. Smith is currently the only fellowship-trained Breast Surgeon at St. Jude Medical Center, as well as the Physician liaison to the COC (Commission On Cancer) from the American College of Surgeons. She is a member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons, Society of Black Academic Surgeons and Association of Woman Surgeons, as well as the Association of Black Women Physicians. She is an Ambassador for Susan G. Komen’s Circle of Promise (The Komen African-American Community Parntnership) and serves on the Orange County Affiliate of Susan G. Komen’s Community Profile Advisory Team.

andy Walia is the Area President for Wells Fargo’s Greater San Gabriel Community Bank. In her current role, Walia oversees approximately 1,030 team members in 54 community banking stores spanning five districts, including Central San Gabriel, Pacific Gateway, Pasadena, Southern LA Metro, and Southern San Gabriel districts.

A 17-year Wells Fargo veteran, Walia’s previous role within the company was district manager of the Pacific Gateway region. Throughout her career, she has worked in a number of retail banking positions across Wells Fargo’s Greater Los Angeles market,

Walia is an avid community volunteer, serving on the board for A Place Called Home which helps children in South Central Los Angeles, as well as the Alzheimer’s Association, California Southland Chapter.

Walia received her bachelor’s degree in biology and chemistry from California State University, Long Beach, and she is a lifelong resident of Palos Verdes, where she currently lives with her husband and two daughters.

GYN Oncology Institute

Methodist Hospital is proud to announce the June 16 opening of our new GYN Oncology Institute.

Our GYN Oncology Institute features updated technology in two large procedure rooms, a private family consultation room and a large, familycentered waiting room. The atmosphere is designed to be welcoming for both patients and family members.

Alan Schlaerth, MD Alan Schlaerth, MD, one of San Gabriel Valley’s most talented and respected GYN oncologists, leads our new GYN Oncology institute, located in a beautifully remodeled building on the south end of the hospital campus. Dr. Schlaerth brings over 20 years of experience and a proven track record of effective treatment and outstanding patient care, specializing in women’s health needs.

In addition to housing Dr. Schlaerth’s practice, the institute provides multiple services – examinations, consultations and outpatient procedures – for women with GYN cancers and other disorders. Dr. SoCal Women’s Conference & Expo 2014Gabriel Schlaerth hasHealth served patients in the San

Valley for many years. Before relocating his practice to Methodist Hospital in Arcadia, Dr. Schlaerth operated an office in Pasadena.

Dr. Schlaerth attended medical school at the University of Southern California, completing his obstetrics and gynecology residency at Glendale Adventist Medical Center and his fellowship in gynecologic oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. He is trained to perform minimally invasive procedures for treating women with various GYN cancers, particularly ovarian cancer.

Colorectal Surgery Institute Now Open The institute’s surgeons are highly skilled in leadingedge treatment for colorectal cancer and other conditions, including polyps and inflammatory bowel diseases. The institute will be located in the Santa Anita Medical Plaza at 301 W. Huntington Drive in Arcadia, just across Methodist Hospital.

Our comprehensive team approach to patient care includes coordination with medical and radiation oncologists as needed for colorectal cancer treatment.

Robert W. Beart, MD, Medical Director Internationally renowned for his research and advancement of treatment for colorectal disease, Dr. Beart is board-certified in general and colorectal surgery. Throughout nearly 40 years of practice and research, Dr. Beart has pioneered many innovations, including the development of laparoscopic colon surgery and advancements in treatment of complex rectal cancer.

Dr. Beart worked at the Mayo Clinic from 1976 to 1992. In the early 1990s, he established the USC Center for Colorectal Diseases. A 1971 graduate of Harvard Medical School, Dr. Beart completed his surgical internship, residencies and fellowship training at the University of Colorado and the Mayo Clinic.

Petar Vukasin, MD Board-certified in general and colorectal surgery, Dr. Petar Vukasin has specialized in the practice and research of colorectal surgery for 20 years. A 1990 graduate of USC Keck School of Medicine,

Dr. Vukasin completed his internship and residency in general surgery and fellowship training in colorectal surgery at Los Angeles County/USC Medical Center.

AnaMaria Garza, MD Dr. AnaMaria Garza is board-certified in general and colorectal surgery. A 2001 graduate of USC Keck School of Medicine, Dr. Garza completed her internship and residency at USC, her research fellowship at John Wayne Cancer Institute and her fellowship training in colorectal surgery at USC Medical Center. She joined the USC faculty in 2008 as an assistant professor of clinical colorectal surgery.

Her continued association with academic centers allows her to extend the latest, most advanced techniques to the surgical care of her patients.

Moshe Barnajian, MD (not pictured above) Dr. Moshe Barnajian is board-certified in general surgery and board-eligible in colon and rectal surgery. He joined the Colorectal Surgery Institute in 2013.

A 2007 graduate of Drexel University College of Medicine, Dr. Barnajian completed his internship and residency at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and his fellowship training in colorectal surgery at Stony Brook University Hospital. hen I turned 50, I felt pretty good.

I did not view

it as that big of a deal; I knew so many wonderful and vital women over 50, and they did not seem to be struggling in any way, nor did they seem “old” to me.

If you look around now, you see many incredible women over 50: Hillary Clinton, Michelle Obama, Christy Brinkley, Sandra Bullock, Cindy Crawford, and the list goes on and on. After all, your 50 is definitely not your mother’s 50!

And then ...I started to not feel good.

First the mood swings came. One minute all was fine, the next, I could almost see the ‘‘wall of sadness” coming at me. The sadness was for no particular reason, and it was palpable, like a physical force. And I was irritable all the time which was very inconvenient at work and very unfair to my husband and son. And the physical problems – ranging from lethargy to a return of the migraines that haunted me in my 30s and early 40s to insomnia to a constant kidney infection that was ruining my life made me feel hopeless at times. How could I live my life if I had to deal with all these health issues? So much of my job required me to travel all over the world, and I became very anxious just heading to the grocery store five minutes away. I wanted to be my best for my son’s high school years and help him prepare for college, but I was run down and had pneumonia twice in 6 months. This was not how I imagined life in my 50s, and I was determined to figure out how to make it better.

The clock in my head that reminded me that my mother died at 54 (of breast cancer and the resulting metastases to her lungs and brain) and that my time was probably running out. This did not,

as you can imagine, reduce my sadness any. And it wasn’t even true!

Based on what I have been experiencing and researching over the past 6 years, I wanted to share my journey and thoughts in the hope that I can prepare younger women tor making the most of what’s ahead, to help my contemporaries who are struggling still and to thank those who have been my guides, and for those a few years further down the road, to honor you and let you know how much you inspire me.

I have put together the eight things that I have learned, that have helped me and that I now try to live by. I hope that they will give you food for thought and improve your life, even in a small way. I feel 100 times better than I did before I tried to do those things, and I am ready for the rest of my life!

1.YouareNOTcrazy!

It feels like you are turning into Sybil or Linda Blair from the Exorcist, but you aren’t. There is a real, physical reason for how you are feeling. Your body is entering a new phase, and you need to make adjustments to feel your best. Using the information below, take

yourself seriously, do your own research and find what is best for YOU. No one can tell you how you feel or whether something works for you. If we were all the same, what fun would life be? You are an expert on your body and your mind. Put that expertise to work to make your life the best it can be!

2. Get a Baseline I absolutely want to give a “shout out” to a man in Beverly Hills who saved my life: Dr. Uzzi Reiss. His book, Natural Superwoman, is available on Amazon, and I encourage every women to read it.

Dr. Uzzi Reiss The Beverly Hills Anti-Aging Center for Men and Women It has insights for women of every age – young and not-as-young; once I started asking around, I found that he was friends with or the doctor of many people I knew. I made an appointment to see him, he ran several blood tests, and we established a baseline from which proper treatment could be determined.

That was the beginning of my taking charge of my physical recovery, I know that it is not convenient for everyone to trek to the 90210 to get medical treatment, but everyone can read Dr. Uzzi’s book and discuss issues with your

own doctor. If your doctor is not well versed in anti-aging issues or women’s issues, ask for a referral. The proper help is essential. You need to know what your thyroid reading is, what your estrogen (and yes, testosterone!) levels are, if you have any vitamin deficiencies, what’s your blood pressure, among other things.

4. Diet

As Adrian has shared with me (and Dr. Uzzi makes similar points in his book), your body is like a fabulous sports car, built to run and achieve high performance- but only with the right fuel.

Because I don’t have the discipline that I wish I did, I work with a personal trainer (Adrian Pietrariu of West Coast Boot Camp in La Cañada; he is AMAZING – see picture below) to help me with my fitness goals. Not only does he “walk the walk,” but he is an expert on nutrition and motivation. For me, it’s like having a friend to work out with – a highly trained expert friend.

Adrian Pietrariu However, there are lots West Coast of things that I do and Boot Camp friends do that don’t cost a thing. Walk, walk, walk. See your neighborhood, talk to your neighbors, make your dogs happy by giving them an outing, jog with your kids or grandkids for fun. My office is in a highrise building in Los Angeles; four floors connected by an elevator or by interior stairs. 9 times out of 10, I take the stairs (though some days I feel like I am having a cardiac issue when running up them).

Nightly sit-ups are easy; no one sees you doing them in your jammies; and, over time, you will find you can do more and more of them. And your abs will start to look amazing!

There are many activities that you can incorporate into your life that are fun – go dancing, throw a football, do tai chi in the park – whatever it is, just keep moving!

Okay, I love ice cream and pizza as much as the next person, and I would crawl over broken glass to snag a raspberry jelly filled glazed donut. But… and unfairly, I believe, I would weigh 400 lbs. (and I am only 5’3”) if I allowed myself to eat what I want all the time.

Sugar is the devil, I am sorry to say. I do love sugar, and being a Southerner, I can’t drink iced tea if it doesn’t have about ‘4 cups of sugar to be proper “sweet tea.’’ But I have learned to use very little; and, gradually, my body has “detoxed.” I don’t crave sugar very often.

Just cutting back dramatically on sugar and carbohydrates in the Summer of 2013 allowed me to lose 20 lbs. in less than 3 months without starving myself or doing anything unhealthy. Just using good judgment on food choices and making time to exercise.

There are thousands of books on nutrition out there, so I won’t presume to add to your store of information.

However, I will say that eating healthy, non-processed foods, reducing your “bad” choices, including fast food (one of my particular vices) and consciously thinking about what you are putting in your mouth makes a world of difference.

5. Hormones To be or not to be?

There has been a raging controversy for years over whether women should do any type of hormone replacement therapy, whether it should be synthetic (synthesized in a pharmacy from …continued on page 36

chemical compounds) or bioidentical (synthesized or compounded in a laboratory from plant compounds). Do they cause cancer? Do they work? Why do you need them?

I am not a physician, and I am not qualified to fully answer these questions. However, I have many friends who are, and I have done a lot of research to find the best answer for me.

I choose natural bioidentical hormones because I have an allergic reaction to the synthetic ones. And, frankly, I really am not enthusiastic about putting horse urine in my system, one of the main ingredients in Premarin, a synthetic hormone (and frowned on by PETA).

My regimen consists of bioidentical hormones, the right vitamins, and fish oil. I have had to experiment with doses and combinations. I feel very much on the right track now, and you con too, once you get a baseline and determine what you need.

And a word of caution – any doctor who tells you that bioidentical hormones will increase your risk of cancer is not informed. Do your own research, and don’t let any medical professional bully you. It is a partnership, not a parent-child relationship. My internist, Dr. Cecilia Kaesler (extraordinary doctor, beautiful woman and mother of four) is a great friend and her vast knowledge of medicine has also saved my life over many years. My friend, Dr. Jodi Cassutt of Kaiser, is not only a great doctor but continues to be a student of her profession and a great resource and another lifesaver. Since I was 35, I have been treated by Dr. Jayson Hymes for my migraines; he is a genius whose treatment allowed me to be able to work and succeed. Find the right doctor(s) and grow old together.

6. Life Changes I have recently become an Empty Nester, as are many women over 50. No one really tells you that this change is as big as becoming a mother, at least it has been for me. It’s kind of like being put on part-time from a full-time job you love. But all of us want our children to be independent, happy, healthy and enjoying their lives to the fullest (well, maybe not too, too much enjoyment when they are supposed to be studying).

So this is the first step for them, and it can be hard on us. I have come to rely on the advice and support of my friends who have already been down this road, and I am keeping busy, trying to check in but not nag, and hold on loosely without letting go. I will keep you posted on my progress. But whether it is Empty Nest or becoming a grandparent or divorce or retirement, look at #8; it’s your future, seize it.

And if one’s budget allows for some subtle “tweaks” from a plastic surgeon, there should be no judging. Looking good helps you feel good and to be confident when you go out in the world and make your unique contribution.

7. Give Yourself Permission to Look Your Best There is still a taboo about any kind of cosmetic or physical intervention. Some say it is not “aging gracefully.” Really?

Oh, please. Every woman has the right to choose for herself what makes her happy. This is the time of your life that can be about you; you have sacrificed for your children, taken care of your husband and perhaps your aging parents; you should look how YOU want to look. Whether it’s getting your hair done differently (and the longheld belief that long hair doesn’t look good over 50 just isn’t true!), coloring your hair, embracing your gray, doing Botox or not, wearing “young” women’s clothing or classic styles, it is all up to

Take a gourmet cooking class or a creative writing or art class, go to Europe (or Africa or Antarctica) or San Francisco, learn how to speak French, volunteer in your community about something that you are passionate about, become politically active, form a book club, indulge yourself, reflect on the dreams of your younger self; it’s not too late. To quote Muriel Spark, the Scottish novelist named one of Britain’s greatest writers of all time, “Be alert to recognize your prime at whatever age it may occur.”Go out there and enjoy your prime is NOW!!!
