Meet our new Warrior faculty

It’s been a while since we’ve had this many new faces on campus. If you’re local, keep an eye out to welcome them. Wherever you are, we appreciate your prayers for their ministries! Pastor Michael Helwig

teaches senior religion and has taken over organizing the “Operation Go” mission trip program. He comes from a big family and has a big family. “I was number six of eight children. Rachel and I have five children: Sam and his wife, Maddie, are in China for a year before starting seminary; Philip is working toward a Mechanical Engineering degree at MSOE; Isaac studies Criminal Justice at UWM; Miriam is a senior at KML; and Gabriel is a freshman here at Lakeside.” His wife, Rachel has taught second grade at St. Stephen in Beaver Dam and Early Childhood at their churches. Mike served as pastor at Christ, Grand Island, Neb., for 6 years and most recently as pastor at Crown of Life, Hubertus, for 15 years. He also taught freshman Word of God at KML for one year. Pastor H, who loves fishing, camping, reading, puzzles, playing guitar, and listening to all styles of music, is enjoying being part of the Lakeside family. “I am excited about connecting to the students with the Word of God and personally through the events of the Lakeside student life,” he says.

Nate Sievert has been in

the teaching ministry for 23 years, serving at Martin Luther, Neenah, Wis.; California Lutheran High School, Wildomar; and Grace, St. Joseph, Mich., for the past 11 years. This year, you find him “teaching a smidge of geometry and a dab of freshman phy ed, as well as a bit of coaching basketball and track,” he says. He and his wife, Amy, have three children: Sam (junior studying avionics at Western Mich. University), Olivia (freshman in medicine at Michigan State), and Makenzie (8th grade at St. John in Watertown, where Amy also teaches). “We as a family enjoy the outdoors and anything that goes along with it,” Nate says. They also keep busy with their children’s athletic events, have traveled to Fort Meyers, Fla., and Black Hills, S.Dak., and cheer for the Michigan State Spartans. page 4 | Lakeside Lutheran Link | 2018 Issue 1 | llhs.org

Hannah Uher, who teaches

Freshman Science and Human Anatomy and Physiology, and coaches cross country and soccer, was born and raised in Milwaukee, where both of her parents are schoolteachers. She attended Wisconsin Lutheran High School, where she met her high school sweetheart, Eric. “We were married July 15, 2017. This past December, we both graduated from MLC with double majors.” Hannah majored in Secondary Chemistry and Life Science Education. After graduation, they went to Beautiful Savior, Cincinnati, Ohio, where Eric was an emergency, long-term substitute. In May, Eric was assigned to Peace, Sun Prairie, as a sixth grade teacher. “Shortly after assignment day, I was placed here at Lakeside, and we could not be more excited about our new home and opportunity to serve God and his people!” Hannah loves small group Bible studies, playing soccer and volleyball, reading, puns, drinking coffee, going to concerts, playing strategy board games, cheering on the Green Bay Packers, and eating at local restaurants.

Justin Vanderhoof, our

new English and social studies teacher, was born in Appleton, graduated from Fox Valley Lutheran in 1998 and Martin Luther College in 2003. He and his wife, Emily, were assigned to Martin Luther School, Neenah, Wis., where he served for 15 years. “I was assigned to teach 5–6th grade but through departmentalization, I taught subjects in every classroom over the years. I also served as the Athletic Director and coached basketball, and coached football at FVL for 12 years.” He also coaches JV football and track at LLHS. He and Emily have three daughters: Madelyn (13), Noelle (10), and Hannah (8), who attend Trinity-St. Luke’s in Watertown, where Emily teaches and directs the preschool. Last year, held an especially big family adventure. “Emily is adopted from South Korea, so in the spring of 2017, we visited Seoul for a week,” he shares.

Teach me your way, Lord,

that I may rely on your faithfulness; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name.

60s This year we’re celebrating the completion of 60 years under the theme “Decades of Faithfulness” with Psalm 86:11 as the prayer. As we move through our 61st school year, you’ll see flashbacks and memories that celebrate God’s goodness to us. Jefferson County Lutheran High School (as we were called before the current site was dedicated) began in the fall of 1958 with a freshmen class and added one each year after. Lois (Roekle ‘62) Sonntag was in that first class. “I was so thankful for being part of the first class of Lakeside. The thought of going to a large high school was very frightening to me,” she says. After graduation, she attended Dr. Martin Luther College and then taught for two years at Zion Lutheran School, Rhinelander, Wis. She and pastor husband, Lyle “Duke”, have served in several locations in Arizona and California. They have four sons who were born while they lived in Bylas, Ariz., on the San Carlos Indian Reservation. They have eight grandchildren, four in Phoenix and four in Wisconsin. “My life is pretty simple now. I lead a Bible Class every other week, drive grandchildren where they need, and go with Duke when he preaches in congregations around the state,” she says. Karen (Sievert ‘63) Miller was in the second graduating class. “Our class designed the LL seal! We met in the old St. Paul’s school where I

had attended for my grade school years,” she says. She remembers that when she started there were only two classes—freshmen and sophomore— and they were close. “It was wonderful! I remember hayrides and roller skating parties, and the Halloween party where Miss (Ruth) Born recited something very spooky,” she says. “It was just a very special experience attending the early years at Lakeside.” Her favorite teachers were Marion Stuhr, Ruth Born, and Lloyd Huebner. “They were all so tuned in to high school students and our needs,” she says. Kathy (Lee ‘66) Voss began classes at the new school. “I did not live in the Lakeside area, and Principal Lloyd Huebner found a family I could live with,” she says. “The new school was absolutely amazing. As students, we were taught to take extraordinary care of every component in that school. Fellow believers and hundreds of volunteers had made the building a reality for us. It was a gift to us, and we were to responsibly care for it.” She toured the school in June 2018 and noticed “everything was in impeccable shape. The tradition of responsible care and fabulous caretakers has gone on!”

She fondly recalls that for any event, the gym was full, whether concert, play, sports, or a party. “Home or away, a distance or not, made no difference—we had such strong support in the young and the old,” she shares. She appreciates how “Lakeside built a solid religious education for its students. As we were only teenagers, we were not aware of how knowing our Savior would continually impact our lives,” she says. “The single most important part of Lakeside for me was watching thousands of people who supported Lakeside live their faith.” After graduation, Kathy attended 2-yr. Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato, Minn., and then earned a degree in behavioral disabilities/special education from UW-Madison. She taught in WELS for five years and in public schools for 21 years. She and husband, Ron, have lived in Baraboo, Wis., almost 40 years and are now retired. They enjoy life with three children— Gretchen, Paul, and Ellen—and eight grandchildren, four boys & four girls. Relationships built back then continue to thrive. As a high schoolers, Kathy lived with the Harvey Froemming family of Jefferson, “charter members who helped Lakeside happen,” she says. She and Agnes Froemming (soon turning 100) are still in touch and Kathy makes the drive to visit every 4–6 weeks. “So, my Lakeside days have continued! It’s a great story!” We couldn’t agree more.
