The fall Bruce began his work at Lakeside, there were also nine new faculty faces, and more than 500 students in the hallways, a 12.6% enrollment increase from 21/22. We’ve been continuing to grow in faces, offerings and opportunities each year since.
ovember 2022—that was when I last wrote this column, four months after I had begun my time as Director. At that time, we were celebrating 65 years of existence as a school. I drew comparisons back to 1958. Comparisons such as the price of gas, movie and music trends, how things had changed so dramatically in those 65 years.
Fast forward to today, spring of 2025, in a season synonymous with new things. The days are warming, the soil is stirring. Birds are returning. Trees, plants and flowers are coming back to life. Change is happening right before our eyes. Best of all, in the spring, we celebrate our LORD and Savior defeating death and the tomb at Easter.
The same LORD has helped me decide it’s time for me to change as well. I have accepted a position that will take me away from daily Lakeside life. I cannot express how incredibly amazing the last three years of serving here have been. The love for this school I have felt and witnessed is beyond measure. When I first took this role—as a long-time salesman—I thought, I can sell Lakeside to people, that’s easy. I was wrong! Lakeside “sells” itself. This role is to simply connect people to it, and the Holy Spirit does the rest. Thank you for supporting the Lakeside ministry so earnestly during my tenure! Words cannot express the humility I feel by the outpouring of support during my time serving our school’s ministry.
My encouragement to you as Forever Warriors is to stay connected. The future is very bright for Lakeside, with many exciting opportunities on the horizon. Stay tuned. God will provide my successor, who will have the pleasure of sharing those possibilities and plans with you.
Goodbye is not a word I like as it is not entirely accurate. As redeemed children of God, we will all see each other some day in the glory and splendor of heaven. Instead, I bid you farewell and say: I will see you again. God’s blessings~ ✝BFD3

Lighter side of lunch (cover)
Since the start of second semester this 2024/25 school year, the new “south” cafeteria has been open for lunch. Boasting high ceilings and lots of south-facing windows, those who find a seat in this caf might be getting an extra dose of Vitamin D each school day. The new addition has already hosted several special events as well, including team banquets, Giving Society gatherings and Grand Event 14!.

Faculty Feature: More servant leaders pass the baton
Two beloved teachers are retiring at the end of this school year. Mr. Kuehl and Mrs. Tetzlaff ministered with serious methods to instill knowledge and skills in the 1000s of students they taught—whether in English or Art. Moreover, these two personalities also impressed teens with their own styles of memorable humor and classy wit. We are thankful for the generations of Warriors they taught and mentored, and we will always hold the memories dear.
2025 1992
Mr. Dan Kuehl has served at Lakeside for 29 years—from 1992 to 1999, and again from 2003 until 2025. He was Director of Curriculum and Instruction through last year, and he has taught a variety of courses, most in the English department—AP English Literature & Composition, Speech, College Prep English, American Lit, British Lit, World Lit—and also Senior Theology. He’s coached girls and boys basketball as well as baseball, and he has served as advisor to our school’s chapter of the National Honor Society, the yearbook and student newspaper. He and Tammy have watched their three children graduate from LLHS and now enjoy the next generation with son Zach (‘05) and wife Brittany (Veale ‘02), with Corey and Molly; daughter Hannah and Billy Luetzow (both ‘07) with Rory, Mack, Hank and Will; and son Sam (‘11).
He shares, “Through the grace of God I will have been able to serve 44 years, 29 of which have been at Lakeside. Though the building is bigger and the students and faculty more numerous, what hasn’t changed since I got here in 1992 is the tremendous support of the federation and its families, and the dedication of the faculty and the school leaders.
“God has truly blessed and continues to bless Lakeside, and I, along with my family, feel honored to have been part of it!”
Mr. Kuehl loves students:
Students love Mr. Kuehl
One of my favorite teachers! I still remember several authors and the significance of their books thanks to his World Lit class. — Danielle Schilling ‘17
Some of my high school students were talking about their public speaking class and I couldn’t help but tell them about Mr. Kuehl and how awesome both he and his speech class was! Blessed to have had him during my time. — Hannah Mayer ‘18
My girls have had the privilege of having him in class, which I am so grateful for … it’s so fun to share stories of being in his classroom too. He has a sense of grace and patience that shines through. At dinner recently, my junior shared—her exact words—“I’m so sad for us, but so happy for him.” I couldn’t have said it better. — Heather (Haberman ‘96) Stelzer
She and Scott, along with Kelly (‘12) and Jason

Carl, Kristen ( ‘14), and Ross, are eager to see what’s next for their family.
She shares, “It has been an honor to contribute to the growth and learning of our students and to work alongside such dedicated colleagues and staff. I am deeply grateful for the opportunities I have had at Lakeside, and I will always hold my time here close to my heart.”
Students love Mrs. T
Mrs. T’s loving nature and ability to always make a rough day better inspired me to be a teacher. — Becca (Doering ‘16) Kvam
You were SO much more than an art teacher, you were a trusted teacher who took the time to listen to the many teens with whatever issue they were going through! My daughters loved you and spoke so highly of you!
— Lori (Koeppel ‘80) Draeger
Mrs. Lori Tetzlaff is wrapping up 25 years of teaching as a Warrior, having joined the family in 2000. Currently facilitating 3 levels of art classes—Art Fundamentals, 2-D and 3-D Art—she has also taught several cross-departmental courses, including Algebra, Computer Essentials, Family Life and Health. She coordinates Art Shows, both high school and elementary, and she organizes Prom with the juniors.
Art teachers always hold a special place within high school student hearts, but Mrs.T created an atmosphere uniquely her own. She made students feel heard, safe, welcome, and loved—all while making us laugh with her sarcasm and wit! Not only has she been a huge part of my life—then and now—she was the woman who inspired me to be the art teacher I am today. All our love from ALL your students. — Mandi Hoeppner ‘05

Movin’ on up
In addition, two teachers announced this spring that they have accepted calls to minister at the collegiate level. As Principal Schultz recently shared, “We thank Cameron Ausen and Matt Doering for their many years of faithful service. They leave big shoes to fill!”
Mr. Matthew Doering joined the Lakeside family in 2002. He’s always been a social studies instructor, focusing on junior and senior Social Studies courses—Government, U.S. History and Financial Literacy—and in the early years, taught Freshman Old Testament and Economics.
And as anyone who’s witnessed his perpetually bouncing knee can imagine, he’s been busy with much more.
2025 2002
He’s achieved a master’s degree in American History and Government, and he’s mentored more than a dozen student teachers. Last year he moved into the role of Director of Curriculum and Instruction. He’s coached varsity softball since ‘02 and varsity football for 21 years; he took on the head coach position this past fall.
He is Board Secretary for WELS World Missions. He and his wife, Jill, are the parents of three Forever Warriors: Cassie (‘14) Schilling, Becca (‘16) Kvam, and Kyle (‘20).
Mr. Doering loves students
Matt also remembers a light-hearted moment when a student asked if he was “addicted” to teaching. “They actually asked me if teaching was my crack,” he says. “Initially, I laughed that off, but the more I thought about it, I told them the next day that it was actually a pretty accurate statement!”
Students love Mr. Doering
Our homeroom period was always a blast. Mr. Doering and I didn’t always see eye to eye, especially when I forgot the shells on taco day, but our banter always kept things interesting. The periods I had with him will be lasting memories of my time at Lakeside. —Griffin Torgerson (‘18)
My whole life I’ve seen my dad’s passion for teaching, and being in his classes showed me many of the qualities I want to mirror as a teacher. I also saw the deep connection he made with his players as a coach, and how he helped them in aspects of not only sport and school, but life and faith as well. —Becca (Doering ‘16) Kvam Doering pushes everyone he comes in contact with to be the best they can be, whether on the sports field or in the classroom. His intensity inspires greatness without sacrificing positive reinforcement and lots of laughs. His was the classroom where students continued to discuss [Government] debate topics well after the bell rang. —Matthias Winters (‘18)
AP Psychology and History. He also serves as the head cross country coach, and distance running coach for track. Under his guidance, the boys have won four Capitol North Conference and four sectional championships (2016, 2021, 2022, and 2023). In four state meets, boys brought home a WIAA State runner-up trophy in 2022 and a State championship title in 2023. The girls team took the Conference championship in 2023 and qualified for the State in 2022, both for the first time since 2012.
He is well-known for always wearing a tie and flashing the LL sign as he crossed the finish of the 2016 Boston Marathon. “I cannot convey enough how much of a blessing Lakeside is in my life and ministry and what a joy it has been to serve these past ten years,” he shares. “While I will be moving into a new role in ministry, I will hold the time I have had on Woodland Beach Rd dearly.”
Students love Mr. Ausen
Jill has noted that wherever they go, they inevitably run into former students. “While those lead to chats about memorable moments, they are actually representative of a much larger truth,” Matt says. “One day we will not only meet members of the Lakeside family here on earth, but we will see them someday at the feet of our Savior in heaven.”
What warms his heart about teaching? “Happens every year,” he says. “Seeing kids I’ve worked closely with graduate and thank me for being part of it. GETS ME EVERY TIME!”
2015
Mr. Cameron Ausen, the “newbie” of this bunch, has spent 10 years as a Warrior. Accepting a call to be Technology Coordinator and computer instructor, he transitioned to social studies where he teaches
We have been blessed to have two of our boys spend their high school years training with Mr. Ausen. Ben (‘20) and Daniel (‘24) both immensely enjoyed working with him in the classroom and as runners. We have many special memories of their Cross Country seasons, including watching the team prayers before each and every race.
—Jen (Iles ‘95) Ertman
Mr. Ausen made history entertaining in his own way with jokes and puns, even if maybe I was the only one laughing—helped to keep engagement for me. I also enjoyed him in Intro to Programming when he tackled that class upon first coming to Lakeside. He definitely was one of my favorites. — Melissa Murack ‘18 Mr. Ausen is one who has made my son feel so at ease right off the bat, jumping into a new school in a new state at the start of junior year. —Sarah Strawn

Building Improvement Phase 2: Cafeteria/Entryway Complete!
The Lord continues to bless our Free to Act debt-free building improvement efforts!
On December 15, Lakeside hosted a dedication ceremony to thank God for his blessings on our addition and renovation project. Principal Schultz and other pastors led a brief dedication ceremony in the cafeteria, after which the doors to the new cafeteria were opened for a cake reception and self-guided tours of that space, the new entrance, and remodeled office area.
Displays included a timeline of our building history (now located in the hallway on the west end of the new cafeteria) as well as the time capsule
ft2 cafeteria expansion, auxiliary kitchen, hallway and lavatory; 750 ft2 of new office space; 700 ft2 main entry vestibule; and almost 1,000 ft2 of storage. Executive Director Kirk DeNoyer reports: “Phase 2 was a successful project that finished on time (by end of December) and on budget (just under $3,500,000).”
The next project will be determined from the results of a master site plan currently underway and due to be completed by July 2025. DeNoyer explains that this analysis step—being performed though Exl Engineering—is intended to ensure “the best use of our existing structure along with a plan for expansion to meet future growth.”

What did Phase 2 comprise?
The scope of the “Phase 2” building project included a remodel of the existing cafeteria, lobby bathrooms, and front office area. A 5,535 ft2 total add in footprint includes a 3,100
An excerpt from Principal Schultz’s letter to the future—included in the new capsule—says it well, “... Looking ahead, [we] pray that Lakeside continues to thrive as a pillar of Christian education ... when this time capsule is opened, it will be evident that God’s blessings have endured, and that the values, mission, and Christ-centered focus of Lakeside remain unchanged. The Word of God will never change.”

Lakeside Link: Veterans invited to be a part of school tribute
Your Lakeside Lutheran is truly privileged to host an annual Veterans Day Observance Event on campus each November. Now, with the energy of a patriotic student leader, we’d like to take another step in honoring those who have demonstrated a willingness to sacrifice all in love of Lord and country.
Last November we honored 68 vets and guests at our annual Veterans Day Observance. Nine were Forever Warriors.
Lakeside dad, Lieutenant Colonel Andrew Dahlie, who serves as the 1-147th Aviation Battalion Commander, spoke. The vets joined in the all-school chapel, led by Pastor Nicholas Mount from St. John, Juneau, who served in the Army from 1997-2002.
L-R: Gene Burrow ‘65, Bob Kuykendall ‘63, Gary Lembrich ‘62, Bob Roth ‘62, Gary Mack ‘66, George Bless ‘63, Marsha Hake ‘69, Jim Buelow ‘64, Steven Helling ‘81
An SPC - E4, he worked as a Voice Interceptor, deploying to Bosnia and Kosovo.
Junior Natalie Popp (pictured right), who started an organization called Teens for Heroes early in her high school career, organized a 2nd year of “Mail Call” for the vets, coordinating 1,000 letters and drawings from federation grade schools and 200 cards from LLHS teens. She also shared about the children’s book she wrote titled “Lew for the Red, White, and Blue.” Now she has stepped up to help her school do a new thing! (more below)
Planned “Warrior Wall of Honor” to reflect thanks and respect
Throughout her words and actions, Lakeside student Natalie Popp demonstrates that honoring veterans should be a more than one-day-a-year activity. Toward this commitment, Natalie presented LL with the opportunity to sponsor a tribute wall honoring our Lakeside Lutheran alum who are also military veterans. She shared examples of what other schools have done and connected with a hardware supplier with significant experience recognizing military personnel; in response, Lakeside administration is more than pleased to support her efforts.
With participation from alum or families, we expect to construct a “Forever Warrior Wall of Honor” to acknowledge our Warriors who have served. To make this happen, we need our veteran alum and/or their families to reach out to tell us you would like to be included! An online form gathers infomation for the individual plaque honorees that will be mounted a the wall board; our Mission Advancement office is also happy to take info over the phone at 920-648-2321 x 2230. Information we’ll collect includes vet name, contact information, graduation year, branch of service, rank and years served.
We know of many alum who have served in the military, and we will reach out other ways to make this offer to those we are aware of. Yet we know our records have holes; if you know of Lakeside alum vets, we humbly ask that you share who you know with us so that we can reach out to as many of our veterans as possible. We also know there are differing views on who is considered a veteran, so we want to share that for our wall, a serviceperson needs to have honorably completed his/her first term of service. Please consider being a part of the Warrior family this way!

Two alum take on new roles in athletics
< Lakeside is pleased to announce that a long-awaited position has been created—Junior Warrior/Elementary Athletic Coordinator—and experienced faculty Andy Asmus (‘88) has agreed to fill it. The role’s significance and time requirement requires him to step away from his role in the football program.
3rd-year faculty Dennis Leckwee (‘93) has been announced as head varsity football coach beginning fall 2025. A.D. Jahns says, “We know he will do an excellent job leading the program. He has already begun to meet with Coach Doering to ensure a smooth transition.” >

We are grateful for the heartfelt gifts offered to the ministry of Lakeside Lutheran High School by one or more donors from November 2024 through March 2025 in loving memory or honor of loved ones.
So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.. Colossians 2:6-7
