Welcome to Lakeside Lutheran High School

From Director Steven Springborn

Well, this certainly looks different, doesn’t it? Props on a gym floor, audience all around, this is shaping up to be a pretty unusual hour of theatre.

I promise, I have a very good reason for putting the performers on the floor and not the stage. They will be employing techniques from the Story Theatre method. The goal is to tell the story collaboratively, with the actors and the audience working together. There will be very few props or costumes, and no set pieces or even a stage to get in the way; just a gym floor. The actors will have to use their voices and bodies more, and you will have to use your imagination a little more. But we’ll get there together. And since we are all working together to tell this story, placing the audience surrounding the stage, or “Theater in the Round.” is a perfect setting. You get to be up close to the action, so you feel like you are in the story too. And while seeing the other audience members across the stage might feel odd at first, hopefully it will also develop a sense of community as we laugh and cheer our way through the stories. Of course, those stories are where the real fun is. All of these other things are just choices we made to help deliver them in the most entertaining way possible. We’ll be telling six of Aesop’s classic fables, but I don’t think this is how he envisioned them. There are plenty of slight updates, like aerobics classes and animal rights activists, but mostly just silliness, like cattle prods and water balloons. Hopefully, in spite of all the chaos, you are still able to learn some valuable morals from these old tales. Mostly though, I just hope you have fun. Enjoy the show!
