You Think You’re Better

Than Me?

Are you always comparing yourself to others? It’s a common human pastime—to compare. This past month you’ve been looking at everyone’s Christmas cards and Christmas photos online and you’ve wondered— who is having a better life? Whose vacation was better? Whose family looks better? Right now as you read this article, someone is looking at your online pics (it’s not me) and comparing their life to yours.

“Do you think you’re better than me?” We compare ourselves to others based on appearance (most common), possessions (clothes, cars, house), career, children, color of skin—you name it. We like to compare, hoping to conclude, “I am better than that person.” God tells us that we are all equal in his eyes—no one is better than anyone else: “There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3:28). The big equalizer is “in Christ Jesus.” As Christians, we recognize that we are all equally sinful, regardless of circumstances. And, we are all equally saved by Jesus Christ—equally forgiven, equally loved, equally gifted with eternal life. No one is better than you. And you are not better than anyone else.

God’s love comes to all of us equally in Christ Jesus, according to this Bible passage, regardless of race, possessions, or gender. Isn’t that good news? If you look at someone else’s post and think “Ugh, that person is better than me!”—then think again! You are both equally loved in God’s eyes!

At Lakeside, we seek to treat everyone the way that God treats us—with Christian love, kindness, and concern for every student, no matter what their circumstances might be. We encourage our students to treat each other with that same kind of love as well. It’s true that our sin will get in the way, and we’re grateful that God keeps forgiving and strengthening us to do this.

May God bless you and your family to do the same! If you haven’t made a New Year’s resolution yet, maybe this is one worth making: “I will show God’s kind of love to everyone this year, no matter who they are, because we are all one in Christ Jesus!”

Call News recap at Lakeside Lutheran since December:

• A December General Board meeting issued permanent calls to Pastor Don Schultz and Mr. John Dorn to serve as Principal and Assistant Principal, respectively. Later that same month, both men accepted the call to continue in the roles in which they have been serving on an interim basis this school year.

Ø Senior Jordan Genz [St. Paul, Ixonia] and junior Maria Vik [St. Paul, Fort] were awarded the Certificate of Merit from the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) at Michigan Technological University. This certificate recognizes female students who have excelled in the areas of math and science in high school.

Ø December 18 was National Twin Day and we celebrated the 13 sets of twins in our student body (teacher Eric Dorn [St. Paul, Lake Mills] is a twin too). We are thankful for all these double blessings! Camryn and Jesse Gilmore [St. John, Jefferson], Addison and Emma Hallberg [Zion, Columbus], Mia &

Paige Krahn [Eastside, Madison], Elena and John Loest [St. Stephen, Beaver Dam], Abby & Emma Meis [Trinity, Watertown], Henry and Jackson Moore [Bethany, Fort], Molly and Riley Norenberg [St. Luke, Watertown], Evan and Ethan Nowatka [Hope, Oconomowoc], Gabriella and Noah Schauff [Holy Cross, Madison], Carson and Logan Scheitinger-Strohm [St. Paul, Fort], Cole and Mia Teteak [St. Andrew, Middleton], Caitlin and Cameron Weiland [Zion, Columbus], Kayden and Kourtney Zech [Lord of Love, DeForest]. • In January, the General Board issued a call to Mr. Justin Gut for upper level science. He currently serves at Trinity, Waukesha. He continues to prayerfully consider this call at the time this writing. Please pray for our Christian brother—and his family—as he considers if God is calling him to join our ministry and build up the Lakeside family. Job Opportunities

Ø At the Lake Mills Fire Department annual firefighter formal dinner and awards ceremony, senior Christian Stuebs [St. Paul, Lake Mills] received his badge, which marks the completion of his one year probationary period. Pinning his badge was his father, Christian Stuebs Sr., a ‘93 Forever Warrior.

Ø Our boys soccer team recently received the national Gold Team Ethics and Sportsmanship Award from the United Soccer Coaches, one of only 135 fall soccer teams to receive platinum, gold, silver, or bronze awards. The award recognizes teams that exhibited fair play and sportsmanship, as reflected by the number of yellow caution cards or red ejection cards they received; our Warriors received only two yellow cards all season.

Ø Robotics Club competition season began Jan. 14 at the Wisconn Valley Robotics Tournament at Shoreland Lutheran High. Our “Warrior Marines” team made it to quarterfinals, ranked 5 of 32 teams. They also won the “Judges Award,” given to the team that “displays special attributes, exemplary effort, or perseverance at

the event, overcomes an obstacle or challenge and achieves a goal or special accomplishment.” (financially challenged, our team used 90% of the robot from last year). They and 2 other LL robot teams (Navy and Space Force) have tournaments continuing to spring.

Ø Boys basketball coach Todd Jahns [St. Paul, Lake Mills] was named the Channel 3000 Coach of the Week See the video at channel3000.com/coach-of-the-weeklakeside-lutherans-todd-jahns/

Ø Congrats to junior bowler Christian Collins [St. Paul, Lake Mills], who took 1st overall Jan. 15 at the Greater Watertown 6th District annual scholarship tournament at Dan’s Village Bowl in Brownsville. He won high scratch game (268) and high scratch series (711) and earned $650 in scholarship funds! Freshman Marek Curia [St. John, Watertown] took 5th overall and $100 in scholarship funds. Twelve of the 58 participants were Lakeside bowlers -what a great opportunity to earn money for post-high school education by doing something they enjoy!

Ø Sophomore Natalie Clark [St. Paul, Lake Mills] recently received a $500 StartUp SAE grant from the Wisconsin FFA Foundation. “Willard and I are so excited,” says Natalie, referring to her mule, the motivation behind her Wisconsin FFA Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) grant application. The SAE involves using therapy animals after the grantee takes online certification classes; Natalie plans to do this with fellow soph Elana Litherland [Zion, Columbus] who has already taken her dog, Buddy, to a nursing home.
