2020 ANNUAL REPORT

Dear Friends, Erie is changing before our very eyes. Our downtown, our waterfront, and our neighborhoods are revitalizing. Access to higher education and technical training is increasing. Advances in medical research are improving healthcare outcomes. Our proud history is being restored, and our diversity is being embraced. We believe in this change and the progress it represents. We believe in Erie. Philanthropy alone can’t transform a community, but it can sure help. Last year, The Erie Community Foundation made 2,523 grants totaling $17,053,760. Donors, past and present, help us support a wide array of deserving nonprofits. An award-winning arts and culture scene, safer neighborhoods, basic human services, and increased nonprofit efficiency are all made possible by these grants. We are also grateful for each of the 31,934 gifts, totaling $26,092,396 received by The Foundation during 2020. Increased donor support, and solid investment management, helped us achieve a year-end market value of $316,566,722. Your community foundation has doubled in size during the past ten years and tripled during the past fifteen years. Even during an international pandemic, we believed in Erie, and Erie believed in Erie Gives. The 2020 annual event broke all records raising over $6.3 Million for 422 nonprofits with gifts from 11,482 donors, a 27% increase over the previous year. When our work was interrupted by the turbulent pandemic, our staff and board quickly assembled philanthropic partners and mobilized resources to be one of the first community foundations creating a COVID-19 Rapid Response Fund. Within two weeks, we distributed $667,801 to 41 local nonprofits to meet pressing needs. As the year progressed, the Foundation modified grant guidelines, budgets, and timetables. We increased our Helping Today grant budget by 50%, provided more emergency funds for operations, and altered timelines to distribute much-needed grant dollars. Now, we optimistically look to the future. We invite you to join us and consider creating your own thoughtful philanthropic legacy within The Erie Community Foundation. Together, we can do so much and strengthen the belief in Erie. Sincerely,

Michael L. Batchelor Past President of The Erie Community Foundation

GIVING BACK IN PERPETUITY Throughout their lives, Brian and Linda (Hoehn) Graff have always mapped out the future. In the early ’80s, the U.S. Defense Mapping Agency supported the country’s defense by hiring 30 specialists a month. The Graffs’ were in the right place, at the right time, with the right knowledge. Linda and Brian met when they were both earning their master’s degrees in geography at the University of Illinois, and married in 1987. They spent the majority of their careers working as Department of Army civilians in the military mapping area, later specializing in the field of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). After retiring early from the Federal Government, Linda and Brian knew they wanted to move out of the Northern Virginia area. They chose Erie for their retirement after returning for a high school reunion five years ago and visiting the Peninsula on a picture-perfect sunny afternoon. For over 30 years, the Graffs’ lived in Northern Virginia, but they never felt a sense of community. Upon moving to Erie, they felt an immediate sense of belonging. Brian, who grew up in St. Petersburg, Florida, joined Erie’s Civil War Round Table and is an active volunteer at the Hagen History Center. Linda, an avid quilter, serves on the boards of the Foundation for Erie’s Public Schools and the Erie Center for Arts and Technology (ECAT). One of their first projects in Erie was to sponsor, through Erie Arts and Culture, the eight-story, photo-realistic mural on the west side of Methodist Towers. When Linda and Brian mapped out their philanthropic giving, they decided one of the most powerful ways to make a permanent impact was by establishing the Graff-Hoehn Teacher Education Fund at The Erie Community Foundation. Recognizing their fortunate careers were made possible by education, the couple decided they wanted to give back and support local teachers seeking further education. “The Erie Community Foundation is a great place to bring ideas to reality and make things happen not only today, but forever,” said Linda, and Brian added, “Making a difference through an endowment is rewarding.”

THE POWER OF ENDOWMENT Each year, donors remember their favored causes by establishing funds at The Erie Community Foundation, where the staff and board become diligent stewards of the funds forever. When each fund was established, no one could predict what the needs would be in the future. However, all of our donors knew the future would be fine due to the power of the endowment and the due diligence of the teams at The Erie Community Foundation. If you want to establish a named endowment, call (814) 454-0843 and speak to a member of our Philanthropic Services Team, who will help you remember your favored nonprofits in perpetuity. It’s simple and easy. Here are just a few of our donors’ stories:

AL & MARY DUVAL DONOR DESIGNATED FUND In April of 2018, 95-year-old Mary Duval joined her husband, Al Duval, who passed in October 2004. Mary and Al Duval were known for their kind hearts and generous giving throughout their lives. They established the Al & Mary Duval Donor Designated Fund #1 to support SafeNet, Sisters of St. Joseph and Emmaus Ministries, as well as the Erie Community Foundation’s overall grantmaking. Then, they founded the Al & Mary Duval Donor Designated Fund #2 to solely support Mercyhurst University; and their third fund, the Al & Mary Duval Holy Cross Church Endowment Fund supports their church. In 2020, the Duvals’ funds granted nearly $9,000.

9

CHARLES G. RAPP FUND When Chuck Rapp was in his late 60’s, he decided to establish the Charles G. Rapp Fund at The Erie Community Foundation to benefit the French Creek Valley Conservancy, the Boy Scouts of America Council, and Asbury Woods Partnership forever. Since he was not married and had no children, he supported his favored nonprofits through his fund. After a successful career at Hammermill International, he retired, but sadly, he unexpectedly passed in 2010 at the age of 71. In 2020, his fund granted nearly $25,000, distributing over $9,500 to French Creek Valley Conservancy, nearly $5,000 to the Boy Scouts, and nearly $10,000 to Asbury Woods Partnership.

2020 ANNUAL REPORT

ROMEO & PHYLLIS MARCHITELLI FUND Corry Community Foundation board member Phyllis Marchitelli, who was 91, passed away in June of 2021. Her legacy lives on through the Romeo and Phyllis Marchitelli Fund at the Corry Community Foundation, which the couple established in 2005. Phyllis believed that the true meaning of life is to plant a tree under whose shade you do not expect to sit. While Phyllis, who knew everyone in Corry and served numerous nonprofits, is dearly missed, in 2020, their fund granted over $3,300 to local nonprofits.

ROBERT & KATHLEEN FRENZEL FUND Bob Frenzel and his wife Kathleen knew they always wanted to support local nonprofits that supported the hungry, homeless, the blind, and New Americans. To meet their goals, they established the Robert & Kathleen Frenzel Fund in 1994. This past April, Bob passed away at the age of 94, and in 2020, their fund granted $14,000 to local charities, including the Sisters of St. Joseph, ServErie, SafeNet, Multicultural Resource Center, Emmaus Ministries, and Booker T. Washington Center.

ELEVEN DIFFERENT ERIE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION FUNDS Margaret Spaeder, who passed in 2007 at the age of 99, left her mark on the Erie Community. Since establishing 11 different designated funds, over $1M dollars has been donated to her favorite nonprofits. Just in 2020 alone, her funds granted $417,000.

HUGH M. NELSON ENGINEERING SCHOLARSHIP At age 94, Mary Nelson, who strongly believed in education, passed away in December of 2020. Mary left a legacy that would not only meet her goal but also honor her father. In 1994, she established the Hugh M. Nelson Engineering Scholarship, which benefits students who are earning a B.S. Engineering degree from Penn State Erie or Gannon University. Last year, Mary gave a $4,000 scholarship award to three deserving students attending Penn State Erie, The Behrend College. 10

COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD Clemont R. “Cle” Austin III

If you’ve never heard of a “Cle-ism,” you’re in for a real treat as we honor Clemont “Cle” Robert Austin III with our 2020 Edward C. Doll Community Service Award. The award recognizes and celebrates community leaders for philanthropy and personal volunteerism. “Insist on honesty in all dealings. In the long run, your reputation and that of your business are essential to success” is a “Cle-ism” and one of many reasons the Foundation’s Board of Trustees chose to honor Cle, E.E. Austin’s fourth president. Born in Erie on December 8, 1946, to C. Robert and Martha (Squier) Austin, Cle grew up in the family home at 240 West 41st Street with his younger siblings Melanie and Kevin. He walked to both Jefferson Elementary School and Memorial Junior High and is still friends to this day with his childhood playmates. During his youth, Cle spent Saturdays at the Downtown Y, learned to sail at the Yacht Club, and worked in various jobs for his father’s business. He also became an avid Cleveland Indians fan as a youngster, listening to broadcasts on AM radio. A graduate of Western Reserve Academy in Hudson, Ohio, Cle’s classmates nicknamed him “Bubbles” because of his irrepressible Erie loyalty. Cle earned his B.S. degree in Engineering from Cornell, where he met his wife, Penelope Smith Austin, who he married during his senior year at Cornell’s Anabelle Taylor Hall in October of 1967. After graduating, Cle and Penny moved West. Cle enrolled in Stanford Business School and earned his M.B.A. He double registered in engineering and earned an M.S. in Civil Engineering from Stanford’s Construction Institute. During the start of his construction career, Cle worked in California, Washington state, and Wyoming at various construction sites and power plants. While at the firm Rothschild & Raffin, he worked on the famed army base, the Presidio Project, which lasted four years. That experience was instrumental to the development of E.E. Austin when he and Penny returned to Erie in 1976 to assume leadership of the family construction business started by his great grandfather. Cle and Penny raised three successful children: C. Robert Austin IV in Chicago, Julia Austin in Manhattan, and Peter (Amanda) Austin in Erie. They also adore their grandchildren Margot, Jack, Ella, Devon, Willa, and Annette.

ABOUT TH E AWAR D The Edward C. Doll Community Service Award is a prestigious community service honor, which is presented each year at the Foundation’s annual meeting. The award recipient is someone whose volunteer experience and personal philanthropy mirror the life and work of Ed Doll. Each year the Ed Doll Endowment produces interest, which the recipients distribute to his or her favored nonprofits. This year, the endowment generated $12,000 for Cle Austin to grant. He chose the ExpERIEnce Children’s Museum Capital Campaign.

DIVERSITY, EQUITY & INCLUSION Diversity is being invited to the dance; Inclusion is being asked to dance, and Equity is choosing the music and the location together. Thanks to the new partnership between the Greater Erie Economic Development Corporation (GEEDC) and The Erie Community Foundation, the dance has begun, and each has asked the other to dance and choose the music. Together, the two nonprofits joined forces to inspire hope in the Erie community, bridge economic gaps, and racial divides by establishing the “We Believe in Erie Fund.” Both organizations committed $1M to the fund and plan to raise a third million. To date, $473K has been raised, and another $527K needs to be raised to meet the $3M goal and matching dollars. “By partnering with the Foundation, we are both meeting the moment and making our ideas tangible to advance real generational change,” said GEEDC CEO Gerald Blanks. “We believe in Erie, and we must do it together.” Once the fund reaches the $3M mark, it will permanently provide $120K to $150K in education scholarships and apprenticeships each year to students of color. Students who are between the ages of 18 and 25, seeking further education for a better life trajectory, and who commit to living in Erie will be eligible. Students like Avery Stevens, a Junior nursing major at Gannon University who has committed to making Erie her home, will be eligible. Raised by a single mom, Avery said, “Without the support of scholarships, I would not be where I am today. The We Believe in Erie Fund will help more students like me. That will bridge the gaps.” “This fund ensures no one is left behind while meeting the needs of Erie’s employers,” said James Grunke, President/CEO of The Erie Regional Chamber and Growth Partnership, which conducted a competitive workforce analysis to help Erie companies benefit from students who are seeking apprenticeships. “We want to create pathways to success for students through education and internships,” said former Erie Community Foundation President Mike Batchelor. “We also want to support the efforts of local businesses to diversify their workforce because we believe in Erie.” PICTURED L TO R Rev. ERIE GIVES

FOUNDED

2011

For twelve consecutive years, Erie Gives continues to amaze. The communityspirited event, which is a project of The Erie Community Foundation and its corporate sponsors, continues to break all records from the previous year. In 2021, a total of 10,808 donors gave over $7 million to support the work of 438 different local nonprofits, which surpassed 2020’s number of $6.3 million. From 11 year-olds selling lemonade to raise Erie Gives Funds to 80 year-olds utilizing their Required Minimum Distributions from their IRAs, everyone can be a philanthropist on Erie Gives Day. The success of Erie Gives is due to the commitment of donors, nonprofits, corporate sponsors, and the Foundation’s staff and board. In 2021, our generous sponsors created the prorated match pool. In addition, the Foundation’s Board voted to also invest $250,000 in the prorated match pool, which totaled a record $422,000! As in past years, the Foundation launches a small advertising campaign, supports the Erie Gives website with eight servers, and dedicates countless hours of staff time. When a donor makes a gift on Erie Gives, the gift passes through the Foundation and is given directly to the nonprofit. The Foundation does not monetarily benefit from Erie Gives, but the goodwill generated is invaluable. Erie Gives introduces young people to the concept of philanthropy, the ease of giving, and the fulfillment of helping others. The prorated match pool is the anchor that generates community excitement and increases the fruitfulness of Erie Gives. For the other 364 days in the year, the Foundation connects donors to causes they care about through endowments and makes grants to nonprofits based on donor’s wishes. The Foundation is not a traditional or fundraising nonprofit but rather works with donors and professional advisors to create cost-effective plans for personal philanthropy. Through the Foundation, donors establish endowments with a minimum of $10,000 and scholarships with a minimum of $25,000, which are investments for the future of Erie, our citizens, and the nonprofit sector, as well as the communities of Corry, Findley Lake, North East, and Union City.

NONPROFIT GOVERNANCE John Quincy Adams said, “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, you are a leader.” The strongest leader of the nonprofit sector is the Nonprofit Partnership. The Erie Community Foundation believes in the power of nonprofit leadership, and in 2006, the Foundation created the Nonprofit Partnership, a membershipbased organization providing capacity-building support to approximately 400 regional nonprofits. Led by industry professionals and sector leaders, the Nonprofit Partnership hosts dozens of educational workshops, hands-on learning labs, and special presentations that focus on fundraising, finance, management, governance, communications, and much more. The Nonprofit Partnership also offers technical assistance, from simple help desk services to intensive consultation for members. Most importantly, members network with each other to gain knowledge of the sector and build collaborative partnerships. The Nonprofit Partnership’s premier event, the Keystone Conference, takes place every fall to bring the sector together to learn from the best of the best. If you oversee a nonprofit or serve on a nonprofit board, encourage your fellow community leaders to consider a membership with The Nonprofit Partnership. If you, too, believe in the power of the nonprofit sector, your encouragement will give your favored nonprofit access to a variety of programs and services that will propel them to be stronger for future growth because we all believe in Erie.

To my friends and colleagues, I guess you never know the correct time to retire, but this feels right for me, my family, and for the community foundation that I love. It is impossible for me to adequately thank all the past and present trustees, donors, staff, nonprofits, civic partners, elected officials, and colleagues throughout the country that I relied on for help and advice. Please know I am forever grateful. Our community really is on the cusp of transformation, and I am proud The Erie Community Foundation has helped along the way. I am also proud we were able to attract a leader like Karen Bilowith to continue this important work. Please join me in welcoming her to Erie and in giving her your full support. Keep dreaming big, keep working together and keep believing in Erie. I’ve never been more optimistic about our community’s future, and I can’t wait to see what happens next! Gratefully,

INCOMING PRESIDENT BAC H ELOR ’S DEG REE

ECONOMICS, BOSTON COLLEGE

MASTER’S DEGREE

PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION, UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO

Hello Erie, As a Northerner at heart, it is with great excitement that I begin my tenure as President of The Erie Community Foundation on October 1, 2021. The reputation and the credibility of the Foundation precedes itself. What really attracted me to the Foundation was the strong collaborations that already exist. During my first visit to Erie, I toured the future location of the Flagship City Market, I heard about the success of the We Believe in Erie campaign, and I met many people with tremendous pride of place. This demonstrated the strong partnership of the public, private and philanthropic sectors. Having worked in upstate New York in communities that have lost population and worked hard to turn things around, I understand the challenges that Erie faces. I believe what I can bring to the table is the ability to facilitate these ongoing conversations, connect some of the big investments that the Foundation has made in partnership with others to ensure that all people of Erie can benefit from the great revitalization. Mike left the Foundation in a good place. I see the work that has been done as pivotal to future work. I look forward to being a part of Erie’s vision because I, too, believe in Erie. Sincerely,

YEARS OF EXPERIENCE IN PHILANTHROPIC & NONPROFIT LEADERSHIP

Waldameer & Water World

Waldameer’s origins began in the late 1800s as Hoffman’s Grove, a popular picnic spot overlooking the lake. The location caught the attention of the Erie Electric Motor Co., the city’s leading trolley company. They leased Hoffman’s Grove and renamed the popular picnic area “Waldameer,” German for “woods by the sea.” In 1896 Waldameer Park was born. Today it is the nation’s 10th oldest amusement park and the home to over 100 rides.

The US Brig Niagara

The US Brig Niagara is a reconstruction of Oliver Hazard Perry’s relief flagship from the battle of Lake Erie. During the War of 1812, Perry transferred from his original flagship, Lawrence to Niagara, and raised his battle flag, saying, “Don’t Give Up the Ship.”

Commodore Perry Statue

Oliver Hazard Perry is labeled the “Hero of Lake Erie” due to his heroic efforts to leave his damaged flagship, row a small boat to the US Brig Niagara, and sailing it to defeat the British in the Battle of Lake Erie.

* Our sincere condolences to the family of Phyllis Marchitelli and Thomas Roche. At the age of 91, Phyllis passed in June of 2021. She was the first woman real estate broker in Corry. She served the Corry Community Foundation since its inception. A proud Notre Dame grad, Tom, who passed in October of 2020, was the youngest stockbroker in the United States. He co-founded Heritage Trust Co., Therma Precision Technology, and worked for the family business Erie County Plastics in Corry. He served the Findley Lake Community Foundation as president.
