MICHAEL L. BATCHELOR & TIMOTHY M. HUNTER Erie Community Foundation President and Chair

FROM THE PRESIDENT & CHAIR In recent years, our community focused resources to pursue a common dream of transforming our economy, our neighborhoods and our downtown. We are working together, like never before, to create opportunity and restore hope. Last fall, your Erie Community Foundation announced an ambitious, five-year, $30 million dollar plan to dramatically increase the resources needed to make dreams come true. Thanks to additional donor support, we doubled our traditional Helping Today grants budget. As always, we worked with strong partners to support initiatives with the potential to alter the trajectory of our community through Shaping Tomorrow grantmaking. For the first time ever, we devoted a portion of our corpus for mission-related investments to help local projects get over the finish line. In previous annual reports, we introduced you to leaders of transformational community projects and their dreams to inspire change. In this report, you will meet community members whose dreams are coming true thanks to grants from The Erie Community Foundation. Learn how officials of an Erie County Little League hit it out of the ballpark with their request to make their fields safer and more secure. Read how members of one family found a new leash (lease) on life by adopting “brothers Deuce and Tucker. Find out how doctors at a local healthcare center set their sights on delivering quality eye care to those in need. These are but a few examples that dreams do come true with the help of The Erie Community Foundation. We are delighted to report we received 21,139 gifts totaling $25,073,741 in 2018. We made 2,401 grants totaling $20,833,785, all in accordance with the dreams of our donors. We established 31 new charitable endowments during the year. A tough investment market yielded a negative 6% return, lowering our year-end market value to $248,467,622. A 2019 investment rebound sets current assets at a record $265,862,756, an increase of over $80 million in the past decade. We thank our donors, past and present, and invite you to learn more about how The Erie Community Foundation can help you accomplish personal philanthropic and estate planning dreams in a cost-effective fashion. Working together, we can make dreams come true!

Sincerely,

Michael L. Batchelor Timothy M. Hunter President Chair

Helping Today Grants The Erie Community Foundation began a new chapter when it introduced its Helping Today, Shaping Tomorrow Grantmaking in 2006. Since then, we built an endowment which allowed us to double our Helping Today grants budget, in perpetuity. Helping Today grants are smaller, traditional grants that are critical to ensuring a vital nonprofit sector. With unprecedented donors support, The Erie Community Foundation is making dreams come true.

A FIELD OF DREAMS In a critical plot twist in the 1989 fantasy/drama baseball film “Field of Dreams,” Kevin Costner’s character, Ray Kinsella, and his late father, John Kinsella, engage in the following conversation:

softball players who compete against teams from all over Erie County in a safe, secure environment.

“Playable fields keep our kids safe, and keep them interested and wanting to gain more knowledge of the game,” said Coach Kelsey Jackson. “The Foundation’s John Kinsella: “Is this heaven?” grant made our dreams come true because the players, Ray Kinsella: “It’s Iowa.” their families and coaches, and our spectators can John Kinsella: “Iowa? I could have sworn this was heaven. Oh yeah. It’s the place where dreams come true.” relax and enjoy America’s favorite pastime in a unique, protected environment.” This analogy certainly rings true for over 240 children “Being on the field since I was three years old,” said in the Northwestern Little League, which recently Northwestern Little League member Zoey Johnson, received a $10,000 Helping Today grant from The Erie “helps me learn how to play and prepares me for Community Foundation to replace and repair fencing playing in college and my ultimate dream of pitching at three baseball fields in the Albion baseball complex. for the Olympics.” Now, dreams have come true for local baseball and

A DREAM, A VISION The eye care professionals of Community Health Net have a vision, a dream to provide quality eye care for those in need. To do so, instruments and equipment need to be regularly updated. As a Federally Qualified Healthcare Center, Community Health Net receives federal funding to provide care to all patients, regardless of ability to pay; however, federal funding does not cover equipment costs.

The $15,000 Helping Today grant made this dream come true. This project is part of a $140,000 effort to replace old vision equipment for eye exams, refraction and general care. Serving over 14,000 patients annually, Community Health Net targets economically challenged populations who are statistically identified to be predisposed to poor eye health.

“Since 1987, we have worked with antiquated equipment in the eye clinic,” said Dr. Douglas Villella, optometrist. “The grant from The Erie Community Foundation has allowed us to digitize our eye exams, get cleaner and quicker readings, and provide the same care to patients as they would receive elsewhere.”

In addition, as part of Community Health Net, medical care, dental care, vision care and pharmacy needs are provided at several locations throughout Erie County. The mission of Community Health Net is to improve the quality of life in our region by providing professional healthcare services with compassion, respect and dignity to all.

UNCONDITIONAL DREAMS When their 12 ½-year-old, beloved golden retriever Molly passed away, the Wagner Family was heartbroken and devastated. Molly shared every moment of their lives and literally grew up with their young family. In Molly’s honor, the Wagners donated her dog items to local animal shelters. A last-stop visit to Because You Care brought the unconditional love and joy of a pet back into their home, which was a timely dream come true. Impressed with the facility and the friendly, caring atmosphere, Sharon Wagner became a volunteer at the shelter. One day, a brown-eyed golden retriever mix rescue came to the shelter for adoption, and “Deuce” became the Wagner’s next family member joining their two college-aged children and two cats. Deuce was born in a puppy mill breeding farm, where he was chained to a leash outside 24/7 and was born to breed. When the Wagner family first adopted Deuce, he didn’t know how to walk

straight, as he only knew how to walk in circles on a leash. He was frightened and scared, but the Wagners welcomed him with love and affection, which completely changed his life. Eventually, Sharon Wagner was hired as a Dog Adoption Counselor to match families with pets. While on duty, another energetic but neglected collie/shepherd mix puppy came to Because You Care from a high-kill shelter in Kentucky. Not only was the dog’s life literally saved, but “Tucker” became the next member of the Wagner family. “My husband and I joke that since we became empty-nesters with our children both in college, we began filling our home with pet babies,” said Wagner. The Foundation awarded a $2,600 Helping Today grant to Because You Care to makes dreams come true every day for not only mistreated or abandoned pets who end up in a loving home, but also for people who want the companionship, loyalty and unconditional love of a pet.

DREAMS OF OPPORTUNITY Many clients of the Greater Erie Community Action Committee (GECAC) find their dreams are hard to fulfill. “We have over 60 programs to help clients achieve their dreams,” said GECAC Executive Director Danny Jones, “but funding gaps exist. For example, a program covers GED training but does not cover the $150 test, which defers the dream. Luckily, The Erie Community Foundation fills the gaps and helps our clients realize their dreams.”

DANNY JONES

GECAC, Executive Director

In 2018, the Foundation provided a $10,000 Helping Today grant to GECAC for an in-depth strategic plan. “Through the process, we discovered people do not understand how GECAC is a major community resource,” Jones said. “Now, we have strategies to move GECAC forward with technology and best practices, which will ultimately increase our mission of providing opportunities for people to seek higher education, earn a trade skill, join the workforce, and earn a living wage. Dreams are coming true.”

CAREERS FULFILL DREAMS Career Street connects local employers with students to introduce career paths and spark dreams. Christopher Holmberg, of Curtze Food Service, partners with Career Street, a program of the Erie County Vocational Technical School. “We help young individuals learn about possibilities for their own futures, which will impact their lives forever,” said Holmberg. Career Café provided over 9,000 student experiences in 2018. “Career Street helped me decide to attend Mercyhurst University and pursue my dream of becoming a teacher,” said Emily Blount, a General McLane student. Eleven-year-old Ava Bailey, a student at North East Intermediate Elementary, noted, “I learned that careers with better salaries require a college degree.”

EMILY BLOUNT, AVA BAILEY, CHRIS HOLMBERG & JENNIFER PONTZER Career Street

The Erie Community Foundation provided a $10,000 Helping Today grant to Career Street to enhance the Newspapers in Education program. “My dream for Erie is that we live in a community of opportunity, where families can thrive in abundance and success,” said Jennifer Pontzer, Executive Director of Career Street. “Careers are the gateway to that type of success.”

Shaping Tomorrow Grants While your community faces big challenges, The Erie Community Foundation believes our opportunities are even bigger. Shaping Tomorrow grants support multiyear, collaborative projects to address systemic issues. Thanks to unprecedented donor support, the Foundation works collaboratively with others to transform our economy, our neighborhoods, and our downtown.

DREAMS OF INDEPENDENCE “We believe in assisting people to be more selfsufficient,” said Gary Horton, Executive Director of the Urban Erie Community Development Corp. “With The Erie Community Foundation’s grant, we are transforming 20 vacant acres of land in the Joyce A. Savocchio Business Park, to provide health, wellness, nutritional options and job training for the people we serve.” The Foundation awarded a $250,000 Shaping Tomorrow grant to support the Minority Community Investment Coalition. This partnership alleviates the effects of poverty by offering culturally responsive services to the residents of low-income and minority communities, and New Americans. “People come to Erie with all kinds of hopes and dreams,” Horton added. “We give them the tools and resources to make their dreams a reality.” “My family is Burundian, but because of the civil war, we moved to a refugee camp in Tanzania, where I was born,” said Sesile Ndayisaba. “When I was about ten years old, we moved to Erie in 2007,

and one of my dreams was to become a citizen, which I just did. With the help of the Urban Erie Community Development Corp. staff, I am learning how to find scholarships, how to interview and how to be a professional. ” Emmanueline Nikundana said, “Since moving from Burundi to Erie, many dreams have come true. I am the first high school graduate in my family, and I even now attend college. Without speaking or understanding English, my family purchased their first home in Erie, which was a big accomplishment and would not be possible in Tanzania.” A mother of four children, Hortense Kasale said, “Being in America and living Erie is a safe environment to raise my children and provide them opportunities.” “With assistance,” Horton added, “we believe people become very independent, self-sufficient and strong, and we are happy to be a part of their future and making their dreams come true.”

A DREAM OF AN EDUCATION A $150,000 Shaping Tomorrow grant is making the dreams of a quality and affordable education come true for many children who meet the Federal Poverty Guidelines. The goals of Mother Teresa Academy are to improve early education reading statistics, increase outdoor play, provide a safer learning environment and encourage high school and college attainment. “Mother Teresa Academy is a great school because the teachers want us to be successful and courageous students,” said Daymi Ramirez, a third grader. “I am glad I am at Mother Teresa Academy because I want to be a lawyer. I plan to work hard and do the best I can with my homework studies for my dreams to come true.” Mother Teresa Academy is a combination of traditional Catholic education along with current best practices to provide a superior academic, value, and faithbased K-8 education for children living in the City of Erie’s most economically challenged neighborhoods.

Mother Teresa Academy grant dollars will also transform unused space into a full playground and basketball court for recess. According to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, about one-third of American children between the ages of 7-17 are considered overweight or obese. Fewer than 25% of children in America get the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity per day. Students will now have the opportunity to improve their physical health while exercising their minds. Accessibility, regardless of a family’s financial situation, is the cornerstone of the Mother Teresa Academy mission. Through the generosity of community partners, the balance of every child’s tuition is funded through philanthropy for at least the next five years for a sustainable future. “Mother Teresa Academy is a wonderful school, and my teachers help me both spiritually and academically,” said eighth-grader Sean Sokolowski. “Mother Teresa has all the right tools for me to attend a good high school and college and then have a great career, which is to be a marine biologist. That will make my dreams come true.”

NEIGHBORHOOD DREAMERS A Shaping Tomorrow grant totaling $250,000 will make many dreams come true for Our West Bayfront residents like Esteline Grant and Russell Smith. Rehabilitation of neglected properties in the Our West Bayfront neighborhoods is making the dream of increased vitality and growing populations come true. “The Mayor is progressive and wants to enhance the downtown, which is really great,” said Grant. Streetscape improvement, repaired sidewalks, installed LED lighting and security cameras make an instant difference. Additional outcomes include reduced criminal activity, increased property values and improved perceptions, which attract private development activity, creating real change.

RUSSELL SMITH & ESTELINE GRANT

Our West Bayfront is a recognized leader because of years of expertise with neighborhood revitalization. “My dream for Erie is that we successfully rebuild our city, creating a community that more and more people will want to call home for many generations,” said Smith.

URBAN OASIS IS A DREAM COME TRUE Faith Kindig knew Erie’s downtown was a food desert in crisis. She dreamed about and created the Urban Oasis Project which includes the Oasis Market, a year-round indoor market and small business incubator located in Downtown Erie, and Erie Sproutz, an urban farming initiative. The Oasis Market emphasizes a direct connection between regional producers and consumers. “Not only did Faith’s dream come true, but our dreams did too,” said shopper Melany Kramer. “Now, seniors don’t need to take a bus or find a ride to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables from local vendors, or to have lunch from their favorite food truck. It is a wonderful thing. It’s a gift.”

MELANY KRAMER

The Market simultaneously addresses two needs. For lower-income residents, The Market provides better access to nutritious foods and healthier living. For entrepreneurs, the Market is an incubator for startups and small businesses. The $200,000 Shaping Tomorrow grant from The Erie Community Foundation to the Urban Oasis Project provides this unique market the opportunity to draw visitors to a revitalized downtown with cascading growth effects for surrounding businesses.

A DREAM TO HELP ERIE’S YOUTH Research shows that experience with trauma, loss and lack of belonging are significant concerns for Erie youth. The inability to effectively cope with these adversities leads to negative outcomes such as increased rates of mental illness, substance abuse and negative academic outcomes. The Erie Community Foundation awarded a $200,000 Shaping Tomorrow grant to Penn State Behrend Susan Hirt Hagen CORE to address the growing problem. “This funding allows us to expand our mission at CORE and surround youth in our community with caring adults who actively invest in building protective factors and shielding youth from risk factors,” said James Hodge, Director, Susan Hirt Hagen CORE. “Through our program, these children grow up to be caring, responsible, productive adults who can reach their dreams.”

The goal of this project is to realign how organizations and schools directly and indirectly affect youth. “We have been mentoring in Girard where one little boy struggles to come to school, but the day of mentoring, he shows up and he is happy,” said Charisse Nixon, Penn State Behrend Professor of Psychology and Assistant Director, Susan Hirt Hagen CORE. “When we mentor at-risk students who come from disadvantaged neighborhoods and homes, we try to change thought processes so a child has hope and a dream that he or she can do anything.” “This opportunity to work with CORE is helping to make dreams come true because we are able to actually expand what we are doing with formal and informal mentoring, as well as training throughout Erie County,” said Andrea Bierer, Director of Community Outreach, Susan Hirt Hagen CORE.

WEDDING BELL DREAMS To revitalize a center city landmark and attract visitors to the downtown area, The Erie Community Foundation awarded a $100,000 Shaping Tomorrow grant to the Perry Square Alliance. The Alliance has initiated significant improvements to Perry Square, including the installation of a main stage, a new fountain and upgraded holiday lighting. In warmer months, the Square is now a colorful retreat of flowers, shrubs and greenery. Future dreams include a food truck row, a café, and an annual Holiday Village. Perry Square Alliance, in collaboration with Erie Arts and Culture, Erie Downtown Partnership, Erie Downtown Development Corporation, the City of

Erie and the Erie Innovation District, prioritizes projects designed to create a welcoming environment. Igniting the heart of Erie and transforming Perry Square is a dream come true, which will drive economic activity and most importantly, improve the quality of life for all. Little did we know that our grant would also inspire wedding bell dreams. In the glow of a 35-foot lighted Christmas tree in Perry Square, Dan Rose proposed to his girlfriend Erin Chludzinski. “When I was thinking of where to propose, I wanted to find somewhere special,” said Dan. “I will never forget that moment. All of the lights on the Christmas tree added to the magic,” continued Erin. The couple plans to continue the holiday spirit when they marry this coming Christmas season.

DREAMS DO COME TRUE THROUGH GO COLLEGE The demographics of Strong Vincent Middle School tell a story of 884 students whose struggle with multiple socioeconomic issues places them at risk of academic failure. A staggering 69% of students are eligible for the free-lunch program; 45% are from minority populations, and 27% are enrolled in special education. As part of The Erie Community Foundation’s transformational philanthropy, the Foundation made a $200,000 Shaping Tomorrow grant to Gannon University for the GO College program. GO College provides academic advising, tutoring, mentors, and exposure to career pathways. GO College delivers what the students need most: hope. The success is measurable. GO College students have a GPA of 3.0 compared to 2.4 of non-participating students. Absenteeism rates improved to 2.7 days, compared to 3.9. “When I first came to Strong Vincent, I was nervous and shy. I signed up for GO College, which really helped me focus on my grades and gave me confidence,” said Alisha Parcell. “Now I dream to attend college to become a doctor or a nurse.”

DREAMING OF A PEACEFUL COMMUNITY The Erie Community Foundation awarded a $250,000 Shaping Tomorrow grant to the Bayfront East Side Taskforce (B.E.S.T.), which focuses on the revitalization of a single neighborhood – Erie’s Historic East Bayfront, where Erie’s history began over 200 years ago. By restoring Erie’s neighborhoods, a sense of community is created to attract families, young entrepreneurs and immigrants like Maitham Basha-Agha. “When I was three and my brother was five, we were walking with our parents in Iraq. A grenade blew shrapnel through my body, and my brother was blinded at the scene,” said Basha-Agha. “My childhood became poverty and war. We escaped to Jordan to pursue our dream for refuge in America. By 2000, we relocated to Erie when I was 12.” “People ask me why Erie?” Basha-Agha continued. “The Refugee Resettlement Program chose Erie, which I now consider home and where I am connected by community. The refreshed downtown offers many exciting opportunities to my colleagues or friends. Living in a safe and peaceful community is a dream come true.”

ERIE GIVES 364 days a year, The Erie Community Foundation works with donors and professional advisors to create permanent endowments to benefit favored causes forever. One day a year, we help hundreds of nonprofits raise critical operational funding through Erie Gives. Erie Gives is an online day of giving when everyone can be a philanthropist with a gift of $25 or more to approximately 300 local and vetted nonprofits. In 2018, Erie Gives

raised over $4.4 million in just 12 hours. This year, Erie Gives will be #twiceasnice. On Monday, August 12, the Foundation will accept checks, and on Tuesday, August 13, www.ErieGives.org will go live for the single day of the year the Foundation fundraises for local nonprofits. Special thanks to our corporate sponsors who provide the prorated match pool.
