Chickens return to Sydney backyards BY ROBERT C. JOHNSTON, WRITER AND RESEARCHER Twenty years ago, in an average North Shore backyard, you were likely to find a lawn, a flowerbed, and a dog. But here in 2017, odds are that you might see a crop of tomatoes and hear the clucking of chickens. The joy of a fresh clutch of eggs.

Modern chickens are thought to be descended from the junglefowl of the Indian subcontinent, which were domesticated at least 5000 years ago.

It could be said that the supermarket revolution in the West during the 20th Century interrupted an ancient bond that had for millennia connected humans to their food sources. The ease of purchasing produce grown far away caused many of us to forget skills our forebears knew intimately. But if the growing resurgence in organic vegie patches in Sydney backyards is any indication, the pendulum is swinging its way back and Sydneysiders are reclaiming at least some control of what exactly is going onto their plates, and how it is raised. Also making a comeback to backyards is the humble chicken. These delightful, peaceful little creatures contentedly cluck about the garden, scratching and pecking in the soil with their feathery little petticoats bustling hither and thither.

They make a wonderful, friendly, low-maintenance pet, are a charm to watch, and it’s a pleasure to provide them with a happy life. And they are useful – they recycle kitchen scraps, create excellent garden fertiliser, and faithfully produce eggs daily. The simple satisfaction of collecting freshly-laid eggs from your own nesting box and cooking them for your family is very special indeed. LIVING LOCAL WINTER 17

A secure coop and fenced garden is essential to keep chickens safe from dogs and foxes.

Up until the mid-20th Century it was quite common to see chickens in Sydney backyards but the availability of commercially produced eggs saw a steep decline. Until now.

Chickens are very social and love to have dust baths in the sun together.

The ISA Brown is a beautiful, friendly breed and an eggcellent layer.

8

The first 87 chickens in Australia arrived aboard the First Fleet and provided a much-needed contribution to a fledgling colony constantly on the verge of starvation.

Check your council website for tips and regulations on keeping chickens in your area. Did you grow up on the North Shore with chickens in the back yard? Send us a pic and we’ll post it on our website.

Real Estate News

As I write this, the federal budget has recently been handed down. Several measures were announced which will have a significant impact on housing affordability. 1. Sellers of new developments will only be able to sell a maximum of half their properties to foreign buyers. This cap should ensure an increase in supply for “Australian” buyers. This restriction is now in place. 2. First-home buyers will be able to “salary sacrifice” for a deposit from pre-tax pay. This money (to a maximum of $30,000) would be deposited to a superannuation fund, and can later be withdrawn for a home deposit. This will be in place from July 1, 2017. 3. Also from July 1, 2017 retirees, or those aged over 65, who sell their family home which they have owned for ten years or more in order to downsize, will be able to make a non-concessional contribution of up to $300,000 of the sale proceeds into superannuation. It is expected that this incentive will increase the number of larger homes on the market, therefore enabling more younger families to move into houses rather than units. 4. An “empty home” or “vacancy” tax will be applied to properties owned by foreign investors who allow their property to remain vacant for more than six months. This annual charge will be www.livinglocalguide.com.au

at least $5,000 and it is expected that this levy will result in more homes being offered to the rental market. 5. Foreign investors will no longer be able to claim the capital gains tax exemption for their main residence. 6. For investment in affordable housing, the capital gains tax discount will be increased to 60%. It will be interesting to see whether these measures will improve housing affordability because, as the government budget fact sheet says, “access to secure and affordable housing has significant economic and social benefits.” Only time will tell as to the impact these strategies will have on the market, however we believe they are a step in the right direction in providing more people with affordable housing options in the future.

Suburb Safari GREAT PLACES TO PLAY ON THE NORTH SHORE

I am pleased to see that our local councils are always working to build new playgrounds or upgrade some of the existing spaces. First in North Wahroonga, we looked at the brand new Golden Jubilee Playground. I used to go to Golden Jubilee Oval to use the bike tracks, but it now has the most amazing, cute little playground just perfect for toddler to preschool aged kids. It has a great safe bike track running though a toddler village, complete with shops and street signs. Bring your coupe or scooter and let their imaginations go wild. For the climbers or older children there is a great “spaceship” with a nice slide, swings and a bigger bike track. Well done, Ku-ring-Gai Council! Cameron Park in Turramurra is really nicely shaded. At first glance it may not look like much has changed, but the equipment is all new. It has a little cubby, truck, slide, swings, rocket climber, swirl, caterpillar and balancing steps. What is fresh about the park is its expanded size. There is now a large green space, ping pong table and a BBQ and seating area with toilets. What a great space to supervise both big and small kids at the same time. The park is also very close to Turramurra shops, and I hear from a friend who I bumped into that Rogers Bakery has the best value coffee in the area. Good to see this area opened up and revitalised. Now for something a bit different, nestled amongst houses in St Ives, we found the brand new Lapwing Reserve. What I really like is its very natural feel. The play equipment is built in natural tones and this makes the park feel very calm. It has a seesaw, rocks to climb, three slides, a roundabout, and swings. Up the back is an interesting play space. This would be a good park for wide games with a group of children, and there are plenty of hide and seek places. Finally, we revisited Willoughby’s Hallstrom Park. They have upgraded the park, but stayed true to the original vision of the park, having been designed to reflect Taronga Zoo. There are lovely nooks where children can explore and find hidden sounds and animal sculptures. There is a new climbing turtle and wheelchair accessible roundabout. It has a fort to climb, sandpit, seesaw, 5 swings, very wide slide, rocks to climb, shade, toilets, and lots of seats for adults. Bring the training wheels and check out the fantastic bike track too. Another excellent park upgrade.

Alice McCall’ s feathered jackets were a stand out on the runway. This look can be a difficult one to pull off if you do not have a column figure as the obvious nature of the feathers adds bulk and exaggerated/broader shoulders - try opting for a faux shorter fur alternatives or accessorize with features and fur through bags and wraps.

Soft, free flowing and structured ruffles were aplenty on the runway! Ruffles are a great way to add volume your bust line. Use caution if you have a bigger bust and consider using ruffles along sleeve lines of tops or hemlines on skirts. We love Bec & Bridge’s interesting incorporation of structured ruffles on their pants.

TREND REPORT:

fashion week beauty

F

BY ELLEN MALONE, BEAUTY EXPERT

TREND ONE TREND TWO

The pastel eyes. Pastels are often overlooked in the makeup world, but paired with a soft lip and great mascara they can give a great lift to the face. Try a wash of lavender or pastel pink instead of your usual brown or taupe and watch the compliments roll in.

The bold red lip. We saw a lot of runways with very clean skin and a true red lipstick. The key to this look is not putting too much on the rest of the face - think cream blush and light foundation. Heavy eyes need not apply. The smoky bronze eye with a nude lip. This classic has been updated for the runway with a bold smudge of colour under the lower lashes. Start with a strong bronze shadow and sweep across your eyelids and into the crease. Smudge the same shade under your lower lash line and add plenty of mascara. Pro tip: blend your eyeshadow down as far as your natural lashes go, it will automatically create the most flattering shape on your eyes.

TREND FIVE

The glowing skin. This look is best achieved by massaging a generous amount of moisturiser on the face prior to starting your makeup. Add some colour to the cheeks by dabbing your favourite peach lipstick on your fingertips and patting on the apples of the cheeks.

TREND THREE

The main trend we saw this year was beauty - not odd, unwearable makeup suited only to the rarefied air of the runway but real, wearable, gorgeous beauty. Here are some of our picks:

TREND FOUR

ashion week is always brimming with fresh faces and beauty inspiration, and this year was no exception.

www.livinglocalguide.com.au

The minimalist. think of this as ‘the anti Instagram’ makeup. After many years of heavy brows and strong contouring, fresh faced makeup is back. The key to this look is keeping the same shade ( preferable pale nude) through the eye shadow, the blush and the lipstick. Add some mascara and brush your brows, and you’re ready to go. “Dream, Inspire, Grow” LIVING LOCAL WINTER 17 21

Dream Doors

Kitchens

It was a pleasure meeting locals and husband and wife team, Bree and Brady Morris; founding franchisees of Dream Doors Australia, opening their doors in June 2014 (now 18-plus franchises in Australia). Dream Doors is an international business model providing kitchen renovations/facelifts which can save thousands of dollars compared to installing a new kitchen, and results in an entirely fresh and modern look in just a few days. Bree and Brady have recently received Franchisee of the Year (second year in a row) for professionalism, integrity and contribution to the Dream Doors brand. They also train potential franchisees. All this with their daughter, being twelve months old. Dream Doors has grown from strength to strength, with 75% growth recorded for the 2016 calendar year.

WHAT IS IT LIKE BEING A HUSBAND AND WIFE TEAM? Like everything, it has its challenges but Brady and I have complementary skillsets so we each look after different aspects of the business. That works well for us. HOW MANY FRANCHISES DO YOU HAVE? Brady and I own two. We started operating the Northern Beaches/ North Shore franchise in June 2014 and then purchased the Inner West franchise a year or so after. SO DREAM DOORS KITCHENS IS QUICK AND AFFORDABLE? Yes. If you are not replacing the whole kitchen (which can keep you out of it for months) it is less expensive than replacing the whole thing. With that said, there is always a cheaper option. We pride ourselves on offering high quality

products, installed by a great team. Our installations generally take two or three days plus. WHAT ARE THE MAIN THINGS THAT MAKE THE KITCHEN LOOK NEW? Colour scheme. Fifteen to twenty years ago the in-Vogue colours were peaches and deep creams. Changing doors, panels and drawers is like walking into a brand-new kitchen. IS IT LIKE A GRAND REVEAL? Haha, each customer is different. Some come home in the evening and we will get a text late at night, “Oh my gosh, I am so in love with my kitchen.” Often clients are more impressed than they thought they would be with the end result.

and we cater to that but in general a classic, white kitchen, is safe and looks good. You can dress white up, put a few styling pieces around, add a plant in the corner or a bunch of flowers and change the style that way.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE STYLE? It is funny you ask because we have just done our own kitchen. It is white with nice black handles and a grey bench top. It has to fit into your home. About 90% of what we sell is a classic white kitchen.

CONGRATULATIONS ON RECEIVING FRANCHISEE OF THE YEAR A SECOND TIME IN A ROW. HOW DOES THIS BENEFIT? We are a local couple with a small business feel but we have the support of a reputable international brand behind us. Our franchiser helps us to source the best quality materials available. They help to ensure that we are performing at our best by communicating directly with our customers and they are there to support us when we need them.

SO WHITE IS VERY IN AT THE MOMENT OR HAS BEEN FOR A LONG TIME? It never really goes out of fashion. It will be interesting in 20 years to see what people think of all the white kitchens. Even though we help people save money compared with a new kitchen, it is still a big investment and people generally don’t want to risk that on something they may hate in five years. Sometimes customers want something a bit left of field

HAVE YOU ALWAYS LIKED RENOVATING? Very much and I am fortunate to get paid for it. I think customers engage with us because we are that little family; Brady’s Dad does a lot of the painting and much of our business comes from referrals from previous customers.

BFFs Tash Sefton and Elle Ferguson talk Fashion, Career and Mosman BY KATE COURTNEY-O’CONNOR, MEDIA AND VIDEO EDITOR | PHOTOGRAPHY MAREE TURK BFFs Tash Sefton and Elle Ferguson are the brains behind They All Hate Us. They have made a career out of a passion two best friends have always shared - fashion. Tash has a background as a buyer and head of womenswear for a leading youth retailer, and is a mother of two. Elle was the global visual merchandising manager for a swimwear label. Every month the They All Hate Us shop gives readers the ability to buy what Tash and Elle are wearing, “We edit down the world of fashion to the 10 lust worthy pieces we love, have bought and live in, and make them available for immediate purchase.” We caught up with the duo at both Fashion Week and The Langham Sydney.

28

LIVING LOCAL WINTER 17

WORK LIFE 1. WHEN DID THEY ALL HATE US COME ABOUT?

Tash: We started our website about 10 years ago as a hobby and worked in the head office for a large youth retailer (where we met). Our online store started about four years ago when we saw a gap in the market. It went mental as soon as we launched and we have been catching our breath ever since then.

“Dream, Inspire, Grow”

www.livinglocalguide.com.au

3. YOU GUYS HAVE AMAZING PRODUCTS LABELLED GIRL GANG, WHAT IS THE STORY BEHIND HOW THAT CAME ABOUT?

Tash: We registered the name ages ago before it was a trendy hashtag. We wanted to create a t-shirt range that was fun and could be worn with your bestie - styled under a blazer or biker jacket. Then we did jewellery and phone cases and because it’s fun and celebrates friendship, it has been a huge success globally. We love seeing images pop up of Girl Gangs.

4. WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT YOUR BRAND? Tash: The best thing is it’s us and it’s wearable. It’s not unobtainable and not too tricked up.

5. HAVING TRANSFERRED TO FOXTEL’S TELEVISION SHOW, STYLE SQUAD, WHAT IS THE BEST PART OF DOING THE SHOW? Tash: Doing it with Elle.

6. HOW DO YOU GUYS STAY FRESH, AND UP-TO-DATE WITH CURRENT TRENDS IN SUCH A CHANGING INDUSTRY?

Tash: We are both kind of obsessed with fashion and have been ever since we were young. Retail is in our DNA. It really just comes naturally. We are always true to our style and Elle and I can wear the same thing just in our own way. We always arrive wearing a version of the same thing and it just works. Everything also centres around basics, a great handbag and pair of killer shoes.

2. HOW DO YOU DECIDE WHAT PIECES TO STOCK AND FOR HOW LONG?

Tash: We work very closely with brands to ensure everything featured is new and exciting. We also feature core items as this is what wardrobes are built on. We teach our customers how to dress and buy, only featuring 10 items (sometimes we sneak a few more in) which takes out the confusion when it comes to shopping. We source product in real time. What you see on social media / on the IT girls / or what we are wearing, you can buy from us. www.livinglocalguide.com.au

Tash: Macgraw as I have followed the girls from the very beginning, Romance was Born because every detail is spectacular, 10 Pieces for the set (Bondi beach put on the perfect backdrop).

8. DO YOU FEEL THE FASHION INDUSTRY IS CHANGING NOW THAT SOCIAL MEDIA IS HEAVILY INVOLVED?

Tash: Yes, because you watch everything in real time and it’s amazing! Wherever you are globally, you can watch everything and feel like you are front row. 30

LIVING LOCAL WINTER 17

Tash: The sock boot (which I am wearing at the moment) is really big and I don’t think it is going away. You can’t get away from a great pair of jeans. Levi’s are back with force, so the mum jean is not going anywhere. If you can get your core basics right, your jeans, white shirt, black blazer and a good pair of heels then the fun fashion things can come in accessories, for example earrings, a statement necklace or a hand bag.

10. STANDOUT FROM FASHION WEEK THAT YOU LOVED SEEING?

Tash: I love the earring trend because you can be in a white t-shirt and look dressy and cool because of your statement earrings.

SYDNEY’S NORTH SHORE 11. WHAT WOULD BE YOUR GO-TOPLACES ON SYDNEY’S NORTH SHORE? Tash: I recently moved to Mosman from the northern beaches and have fallen in love with the area. My children’s school is wonderful, the shopping in Mosman is addictive and restaurants are wonderful.

12. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE COFFEE PLACE IN BALMORAL?

Tash: The Boathouse Balmoral Beach because my kids love the playground and the beach close by.

13. WHAT WOULD BE YOUR SHOPPING GO-TO ON THE NORTH SHORE? Tash: The shopping in Mosman is very convenient - possibly too much so. When I’m buying bread and there is a Camilla And Marc, Pond, Watson X Watson close by, it can be an expensive outing!

14. WHAT CAN WE EXPECT TO SEE FROM THE DYNAMIC FASHION DUO OVER THE NEXT YEAR?

Graduate

When people think about studying hospitality images of fine dining and plush five star hotels typically spring to mind. But for recent graduate Georgina Larby, studying a Bachelor of Hospitality Management at ICMS in Manly was a springboard to entrepreneurial success. Georgina’s company Pure Pops with its range of handcrafted, 100% natural ice pops has really struck a chord with health conscious consumers. After humble beginning in Sydney’s Northern Beaches, her delicious product range is now stocked up and down the east coast of Australia. Initially drawn to ICMS by the stunning location and interest in the hospitality industry, it was the unique blend of business/ management content along with her 9 month industry placement - a feature of all ICMS degrees – that started her on a more enterprising journey. Georgina says, "ICMS was my first 34

pick to study a Bachelor course in hospitality. The location of the campus was also a major deciding factor…how can anyone say no to the view? Thanks to ICMS I have developed an all-round hands-on approach to business and management. My industry training placement was at Victoria’s, Wategoes Beach Byron Bay and the owner of the business fuelled my eagerness to start something for myself. My business, Pure Pops, is continuing to grow and there is a great community around our brand from our suppliers, to the stores that stock us and our happy customers," she says. "Thanks to ICMS I have developed an all-round hands-on approach to business and management. There is not a day that goes by that we’re not thrown in the deep end. The only way to trouble shoot your way out of these situations is to know your business and not be afraid to think outside the square." ASK OUR EXPERTS

AT STEP INTO LIFE, YOUR PERSONAL TRAINER DOES MORE THAN JUST PRESCRIBE A VARIETY OF EXERCISES.

As personal trainers, we have the opportunity to improve the self-esteem and confidence of the members we are working with, and mentor people to be better versions of themselves. Put simply, every human being thrives on positive reinforcement and the epitome of being a mentor is elevating each person we are working with to a more positive place. These are the ways a Step into Life personal trainer can be a great mentor to you. 1. WE TAKE AN INTEREST IN ALL AREAS OF OUR MEMBER’S LIFE

Even though our skill-set and experience is based around exercise and fitness training, understanding what is going on in other areas of our member’s life is also important. Providing some support and general advice based on our own life experiences can be enough to help boost a member’s attitude towards healthy living, career aspirations, family and social life.

2. WE DO SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF

Mentorship is not all about helping someone to set – and achieve – big goals in life, but more so, simply focusing on the small things along the way. We strive to always remember the details of what our members are experiencing in their lives during our chats, and refer back to them with interest. It’s about creating an informal environment where our member feels confident to openly discuss any aspect of their training – and life – with us.

3. WE SET REALISTIC, YET CHALLENGING, EXPECTATIONS A mentor is best described as someone who gives another person help and advice over a period of time and often also teaches them how to do the task at hand well. Part of doing this is to help keep our members accountable by setting some realistic goals or expectations that will help keep them on track.

4. WE ALWAYS ACKNOWLEDGE EFFORT

If you have ever enjoyed having a mentor in your life, you will know that great mentorship is about acknowledging the efforts that you make, and providing positive reinforcement every step of the way. You’ll always experience that with your Step into Life personal trainer.

5. WE LISTEN

36

LIVING LOCAL WINTER 17

We listen to our member’s key motivators during communication, and ask questions that clarify what our members really want to achieve. We then use this information to motivate them to be a of themselves. better version “Dream, Inspire, Grow” www.livinglocalguide.com.au

INGREDIENTS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT.

Every week there seems to be another super food ingredient that we must add into our diet. It can be hard to keep up and even harder understanding what they are. Some are already well known and others are new to health food stores. As always read the labels to ensure that they are safe for you to use. Here is a quick list of what’s trending in health food now.

MACA A root vegetable native to Peru, Maca has an earthy, nutty flavour and is most commonly found in powder form. The benefits of Maca include energy and mood boosting, improved skin and menstrual relief. Maca works to regulate hormones and promote endocrine balance, which can alleviate symptoms of PMS and cramps. TURMERIC Turmeric has long been used and prized for its antiinflammatory properties. Today, you can find it just about anywhere. The main compound responsible for its anti-inflammatory benefits, curcumin, has been used to fight simple colds and flus, Alzheimer’s disease, liver damage, prevent cancer, and of course relieve inflammation. COCONUT OIL Coconut oil can be found in most major supermarkets these days as it has become very popular. Coconut oil is a highly anti-inflammatory fat that is made up of mostly medium-chain fatty acids, which are easier to digest and not readily stored as fat. In addition, coconut oil contains antimicrobial and anti-fungal properties from caprylic, lauric, and capric acids, aiding in reducing inflammation. It’s great to cook with and even better used as skin care.

Thumbsucking and Pacifiers BY DR LAURENCE MCCARTHY, BMED SCI, BDENT (HON)

Thumb sucking is quite natural and babies will often gain comfort and security by placing fingers, thumbs, pacifiers and countless other objects in their mouths.

TIPS TO BREAK THE HABIT: • Apply a band aid to the thumb or finger that is most commonly sucked • Apply a bitter or spicy substance to the band aid to discourage sucking • Place a sock over the hand during sleep time • Speak to your dentist about making a mouth appliance

Unfortunately, sucking can alter the development of the mouth and affect the position of the teeth and jaws. These changes are more likely to occur when children suck strongly and frequently. Most children will stop sucking between ages 2 and 4 but I am often asked by parents what can be done to break this habit before it causes any negative side effects. The first step is introducing the idea of stopping and trying to create a desire in the child to break the habit. Often the sucking habit is a way of dealing with insecurity or needing comfort. Providing comfort and dealing with any sources of anxiety can also help to decrease sucking dependence. 40

LIVING LOCAL WINTER 17

Once the child has the desire to stop, it can still be quite challenging to break the habit as it may have become a subconscious reflex to certain feelings or situations. Changing the sensation provided by the thumb or finger by applying band aids and other objects can serve as a reminder to the child when they instinctively begin sucking. If all other methods have failed, speak to your dentist about an orthodontic appliance to block the child’s thumb which can be worn until the habit is broken.

“Dream, Inspire, Grow”

TIPS TO ENCOURAGE A DESIRE FOR CHANGE: • Give positive reinforcement and praise when your child is not sucking • Ask your dentist to provide encouragement to your child and discuss the importance of stopping the habit • Provide comfort and address any anxiety • Involve the child in choosing a method and an approach to stopping If you notice any changes in the baby teeth or you cannot break your child’s habit before the adult teeth are due to erupt, you should consult your dentist. HELPFUL HINTS FOR PARENTS OF CHILDREN STARTING PRIMARY SCHOOL 2018

MRS CHRIS GRAY WITH A STUDENT

Starting school is an important moment in every child and parent’s life. Preparing your son or daughter for the start of school will help them settle and get off to a great start. BY KNOX GRAMMAR PREPARATORY SCHOOL’S K-2 COORDINATOR MRS CHRIS GRAY Before your son or daughter starts at school: . Talk to your child about school and that it isn’t just for a day or a week, you keep going. . Tell your child that they come to school to learn and play. Be positive about school and learning. . Drive past the school regularly and talk about their new school. . Encourage your child to use the toilet independently. For boys, access public toilets so he knows how to use a urinal. . Teach your child to ride a bike – learning how to ride a bike is a great way to learn about persistence and how to bounce back. . Make time to go to the park and use climbing equipment. It is important to develop core strength so that they can sit at a desk for periods of time without tiring. . Give your child simple jobs to do at home – tidy up toys, make their bed, set the table. Encourage effort and independence without a reward. . Purchase lunch boxes and drink bottles that are easy to open and use. Label them clearly and practise using them

on a picnic in the backyard or in a park. . Get your child to practise packing their own bag so that they knows what is in each section. . If your child has difficulty separating, encourage them to stay with family or a friend. Let your child know you will pick him/her up at a set time and keep your word so that they knows you will collect them. . Have a set time to read with your son each night and a set time for bed.

When school begins: . See that your child arrives at school on time – late arrival can be stressful for some children. . Say ‘goodbye’ brightly and cheerfully. . Don’t let your child see you upset. . Don’t hang around – they need to learn to be independent. . Encourage your child by admiring the work that is brought home. . Understand that your child will be very tired at the end of the day – school is the biggest step taken so far. There are lots

of new people, new activities, things will be bewildering and the students work very hard. . At the end of the day when your child is tired it is better to say, “You look as if you have had an interesting/tiring/busy/ happy day today”, rather than “what happened at school today?” . Don’t over-commit your child. Give them plenty of time at home to relax and reenergise. . When preparing food, pack food that is easy to open, easy to eat and not messy. Avoid using plastic wrap and processed food because children find it hard to pull apart. Paper bags are better for the environment too. Food is fuel for the brain. . Don’t worry if they don’t eat everything. School is a busy place and there is a lot of fun to enjoy!

LEARNING ENRICHMENT

Tedeschi Style Simon Tedeschi, most certainly one of Australia’s finest and most admirable musicians, has inspired Roseville College students in Years 5 - 12 with a unique Masterclass that combined his musical genius with a heartfelt message to inspire each girl to work hard to achieve her dreams.

will help her as she approaches her HSC music performances. Wenny, a Roseville music scholar, has played piano for 14 years and currently studies with one of Simon’s past teachers. “It is incredible to have an opportunity like this at school”. Pianist and music scholar Elyssa Chien, Year 7, and fellow pianist Cynthia So, Year 9, also performed in the Masterclass. Despite being younger performers, both have set high standards for learning, selfimprovement and discipline when it comes to studying piano. The girls agree that today’s remarkable opportunity will have lasting impact on the depth and quality of their musical performances, as well as on their outlook to practise and learning

Three Roseville College Senior School music students, including two music scholarship recipients, also performed. “It was an honour to have Simon attentive to my performance,” says Year 12 Music Captain, Wenny Qu, who expects Mr Tedeschi’s guidance of her emotive and technical skills 46

– even beyond music. Roseville College Learning Enrichment teachers, Mrs Annelise Woo Ruiz and Mrs Claire Rowsell, orchestrated the visit because they are committed to inspiring girls to embrace their natural gifts and abilities – whether in music, the arts, sports or academic pursuits, and to persevere through work hard. “Simon is extraordinarily gifted musically, yet he had to work extremely hard at perfecting his ability to a world-class standard,” explains Mrs Woo Ruiz, who says Simon tells his own story to expel the notion of ‘easy giftedness’ and credits his success to several things including a measure of good luck. Mrs Woo Ruiz thinks three of these in particular will resonate with Roseville College girls. Firstly, the currency of hard work; it counts and it pays off. Next, appreciating the network of teachers and family who support (and nudge) you to stay focussed on your goal or dream. Lastly, the value of having balance in life; to nurture relationships and have a good sense of humour, and to enjoy a range of hobbies.” "Make the most of every opportunity you have to refine and extend your natural abilities, no matter what they are. Everyone’s development process is individual; however, key characteristics that will help you achieve your goals are universal: resilience, perseverance, hard work and passion," said Mr Tedeschi. SYDNEY GRAMMAR BOYS Sydney Grammar School St Ives Prep is a unique place which caters especially for lively boys who are intellectually curious, creative and display an enthusiasm for learning. Our aim is to provide a learning environment that is both rich and challenging and encourages independence and deep thinking. We seek to build a culture where learning is held in high regard and doing your best is rewarded. Even though the facilities at St Ives are outstanding with spacious grounds and large open classrooms, our focus is on building connections between people. Our teachers know their boys well and seek to give them the opportunity to blossom intellectually, socially and emotionally. This community thrives on a culture of mutual respect. We want our boys to grow up into creative, intuitive and sensitive young men. Fostering bright boys’ curiosity and wonderment requires expert teachers who can pose questions, encourage ideas, support investigations 48

LIVING LOCAL WINTER 17

and nurture growing minds. Imagination and creativity are vital in any young person’s childhood and at Grammar we celebrate these through our approach to inquiry. Intellectually able boys ask deep and complex questions and through our model of inquiry we develop the necessary tools for seeking out answers. Structured, guided and independent inquiry skills are developed in our classrooms from Preschool to Year 6. Stimulating thinking is an everyday occurrence here. Sport is a vital element in a boy’s education and provides opportunities for boys to develop physical well-being and confidence, to experience teamwork and connect socially. The expansive grounds and facilities allow boys from Preschool to Year 6 the chance to participate in the busy sporting programme and provide the perfect playground for our active boys. Our youngest boys focus on developing fundamental movement skills whilst building positive relationships that promote wellbeing. Adopting an active lifestyle is important from a young age and all our boys from Year 3 represent Grammar in Saturday games against other “Dream, Inspire, Grow”

schools. Camps are an exciting part of the curriculum and boys enjoy time away from home with teachers and instructors in a supportive and challenging environment. Music fosters the creative spirit and individual expression so necessary in our lives. It is for this important reason that Music has a central place in the culture of the whole School. Class programmes teach five basic areas of elementary music – singing, moving, creating, listening and playing. Lessons on most orchestral instruments are available from specialist tutors and a number of choirs, chamber groups, ensembles and a full symphony orchestra rehearse each week. Recitals and concerts are held regularly and there are also opportunities for musical tours away from the School. If you walk through the School you will always hear music. St Ives boys lead very busy and productive school lives. They participate in a variety of programmes including Music, Science, Drama, Debating, Visual Arts, Languages, Chess and of course, Sport. The swimming pool, tennis and basketball courts are in constant use as are the two main ovals for Cricket, Rugby and Football. Schools can make extravagant claims and promises. Grammar was founded with the one aim in mind – the preparation of talented boys for advanced study, ultimately university. If you think your son could benefit from what we have to offer, please get in touch with us. You should join one of our regular tours – the next one is Monday 5 September. We’d love to hear from you. A LONG WAY FROM HOME Barker has welcomed three young ladies from Sabah in Malaysia, who are visiting the School for three weeks, to honour the lives of the three Barker old boys, who lost their lives in the appalling Sandakan Death Marches in Malaysia in 1945. The Sandakan Memorial Scholarship Trust was established in gratitude to the Dusun people who assisted six Australian after their escape from captivity in the Sandakan region in 1945. The Trust aims to provide an 52

opportunity for some of the Dusun, Christian children to pursue an education beyond primary school. Girls, in particular, benefit from the Trust, which Barker has supported since its establishment. The three Malaysian students come from a simple and traditional village setting and will find the experience of living away from their community to be a life changing one. Barker already supports several girls in the community to access education, which is making a powerful difference in the life choices they can make. Bringing “Dream, Inspire, Grow”

three girls to Barker for a few weeks helps to form a more meaningful connection with one of the nation’s saddest stories of WWII. What’s Not To Love About WINTER? BY SUSAN POTTHURST, ELEGANT OUTDOORS GARDEN CENTRE, TURRAMURRA

Personally, I love the crisp mornings and early dark evenings of winter (that’s the Londoner in me coming out) and I was only thinking the other day how I used to set my heating in the UK in winter to 20 degrees to keep warm. Now, living here in Sydney, I set the air conditioner at the exact same temperature to cool me down after working through those scorching hot summer days in the garden centre! I know that winter is isn’t everyone’s favourite time of the year but it’s a pretty short season really, so I’d like to share a few things with you that keep me cheerful and cosy until Springtime.

Outside, my appreciation of the structural magnificence of the deciduous trees is equalled at the other end of the scale by the iridescent white blooms of the humble violas that line the pathways. White flowers are great in the garden at night as you can still see them in the darkness and they are particularly enchanting on a clear night when the moon is full.

When friends come over but it’s too nippy to eat alfresco, I light simple white candles in my old-style metal coach lanterns on the outside table which are visible from the dining room. Inside, the gentle crackling of the wick of my WoodWick® scented candle creates a feeling of warmth and comfort to the living room.

Waking up to a fresh, bright plant makes for a great start to the day. As it’s cyclamen season, I go for a feminine soft pink one in my bedroom and a more powerful, invigorating magenta pink in the bathroom. The flowers keep popping up for months!

For those quiet nights in, there’s nothing nicer than wrapping a soft throw rug around you with a hot drink and a good book in your hands. So please, do enjoy the winter season – you’ll hardly notice it if you surround yourself with the delightful colours of nature and some creature comforts at home. www.livinglocalguide.com.au

COLDER WEATHER

A Hotter Market BY KATE MILES

Many people believe that spring is the best time to sell a property, with flowers blooming and warmer days. What most people don’t know is that the most competitive sale prices for properties occur in winter. Some of the best sale prices are regularly achieved during the months of June, July and August. This has been tracked by RP Data for decades with an undeniable correlation between less property available during the colder months and higher average sale prices. If asked, most property owners would say that winter is not a good time to sell because it’s cold, wet and the garden does not look at its best. Strangely, www.livinglocalguide.com.au

this opinion is not shared with prospective purchasers. Buyers have less to choose from because plenty of home owners hold off selling until spring. Consequently, demand far outweighs supply and forces prices up due to competition between buyers. This is exacerbated by the relatively low stock levels already. Even if your home isn’t high and dry enjoying northerly sunlight, there are small things that really make a difference to how a buyer will receive your home. Trim back hedges or branches that are shading windows and ensure pavers and pathways are free from any visible moss or mould. Open curtains to allow as much light as possible in to the house. Timing is everything in real estate, particularly for knowing how to utilise the suns “Dream, Inspire, Grow”

optimum position during the winter months when showing the home. Every little bit counts – for more tips on buying or selling during the colder months feel free to contact us. With interest rates continuing at a record low level of 1.5% the quality of buyer enquiry is excellent. We have an abundance of well qualified buyers ready to act with very little available to purchase. Century 21 has almost 8,000 offices globally, 3,500 in the Asia Pacific region alone. All properties are listed on the Century 21 global website and automatically translated into 16 languages, giving your property unparalleled global exposure and the best chance of maximum sale price. Flying High with Tim

Tim Maddren is Peter Pan in the upcoming pantomime, Peter Pan and Tinker Bell! Showing at Sydney’s State Theatre from July 7-16.

What was is it like auditioning for this role?

I happened to be overseas when Bonnie Lythgoe produced Aladdin at the State Theatre in 2015. But my wife, Steph Maddren, was able to see it. Steph has been a supporter of Bonnie for many years; Steph was a contestant on the first season of So You Think You Can Dance? and attributes this to kick-starting her dancing career. After seeing Aladdin, Steph was effusive that I audition for Bonnie’s production of Cinderella the following year. Sure enough, six months later, I had a ball auditioning for Bonnie and her team, alongside Jamie Hadwen’s Cinderella. Performing in Cinderella was fantastic, I didn’t want it to end. Bonnie and Chris’ shows are the perfect mixture of fun and laughter, all wrapped in a special theatre magic. After this experience with Bonnie, Chris and the team, I couldn’t wait to work with them again!

How did you find out that you had secured the role?

My friend Cam puts on a weekly Taco Tuesday night at his house. A large group of us were there wearing shirts that read, ‘Forget the siesta it’s time to fiesta!’, when I got the message from Chris offering me the role. I leapt around the room and Cam even gave me permission to have the last taco (huge honour). I then replied to Chris with a gif of Peter Pan leaping about with joy. I was so excited – it’s one of those roles I’ve always wanted to play and I can’t wait.

You have played many wonderful roles; do you have a special way to remember lines?

It’s not a nice feeling when you realise your audition for a show was only as good as your line recall on the day. I mention auditions because in stage shows I usually know my lines by early rehearsals. I really don’t like it when line-drops and hesitations get in the way of what I want to do. I relate it to trying to fly with a broken wing. 60

LIVING LOCAL WINTER 17

I’ve worked with lots of people who just blink at the page and their lines are in their head. For me, I take I while. Most of the television shows I’ve worked on have had small casts so you have dialogue to learn. This can sometimes mean the production only goes as fast as you can memorise. My special tip to learning lines is to do it just before bed. I tried this after a neuroscientist friend of mine told me that memory test subjects recall information better if they study the information just before going to sleep the night before, and this really helped me.

Do you think there will be some Hi-5 in your rendition of Peter Pan?

“Dream, Inspire, Grow”

www.livinglocalguide.com.au

Hi-5 was unique as I played ‘myself’ on the show! I would like to say my actual name is Peter Pan and that I can fly, but alas. Fans of Hi-5 may see some correlation. A lot of the children who watched Hi-5 are now old enough to enjoy Peter Pan so it will be cool to meet them again and it kind of feels like I’m continuing their induction into the magic of live theatre. But this time, instead of wearing nappies, they’ll probably be carrying smartphones and fidget spinners.

Do you have a favourite scene you can’t wait to perform?

My first scene in the show has everything. It gave me goose bumps reading it for the first time. And the moment I judge Hook (Todd McKenney) on his dancing ability will be a joy to perform!

Any surprises we can expect within the show? I really shouldn’t be giving this away, but as a Living Local exclusive I’ll tell you: I will actually be flying!

How do you relax between shows?

Last year in Cinderella the cast came down with an obsession for Pokemon Go. Between shows we would be touring around the CBD and certain parts of the theatre chasing Zubats and Pidgeys. I shared a dressing room with Peter Everett so was also treated to some great home-cooking.

Your wife is also a performer; do you often practice roles with each other?

Strangely, we haven’t performed alongside each other much. However, in 2015, Steph was the choreographer for a television series I shot in Abu Dhabi. I felt so lucky having her as our choreographer as I have a kind of

‘unique’ dance style, so Steph made me look like a far better dancer than I actually was. This year we also performed a pas de deus in a show we produced together, which was very special for me.

Has your son watched Peter Pan yet or will this be his first time?

Banjo’s a big fan of Hi-5. When it’s on, I sometimes stand beside the TV and imitate myself on the screen. Watching him compute why there are two perky versions of me in front of him is very funny (for me). He has only seen me perform live once, and that was last year in Cinderella. Bonnie and Chris do these fantastic performances of their shows called ‘relaxed performances’. A ‘relaxed performance’ means anyone who doesn’t feel comfortable going to the theatre under the usual circumstances can go to a performance where the house lights are only dimmed to 50% and no-one cares how much noise you make. If you want to walk around the auditorium whilst the show is on that’s cool too. These performances were awesome for Steph and me last year. It meant that 6-month-old Banjo could come to the theatre and we didn’t have to get a babysitter. So, I can’t wait to spin his mind when his father starts flying in front of his eyes!
