Welcome to our

autumn edition! Technology helps us in many ways but increasingly we see a ‘hurry sickness’ challenging family time and healthy home-cooked meals.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Rachael Finch about her brand-new baby boy (born just days before our interview!) as well as how she finds time in her busy schedule. “I have learnt how to prioritise the things that are the most important and be Ok with letting the smaller things wait,” said Rachael. We also feature local and leading artist, Edna Garran Brown, who used her passion for art to be a voice for the Aboriginal Forgotten People. Don’t forget to check out our new website launched last summer and find us on Facebook and Instagram: www.LivingLocalGuide.com.au! We hope you enjoy this edition! Have a wonderful autumn!!!

Peter Trends farewells Anna Zampa BY ROBERT C. JOHNSTON, WRITER AND RESEARCHER On the topic of wedding dresses there is one name on the North Shore that is sure to come up. For over thirty years, Peter Trends Bridal on the Pacific Highway in Roseville has created the perfect bridal gown for multiple generations of Sydney women.

A shop is more than just brick and mortar and is also made up of the faces and personalities that local customers get to know and trust, and keep coming back to see. Recently Peter Trends lost one of its most iconic staff members in the wonderful Anna Zampa, who sadly passed away in February. Anna had been creating, altering, and fitting wedding gowns at Peter Trends for over twenty years. In this time she often served two generations from the same family. Peter and Elvie’s daughters, Monique and Paulein, say that Anna was like a mother to everyone; brides loved her and her laughter filled the store. Her beautiful warmth and skilled hand could make even the most self-conscious bride-to-be feel fabulous.

Creators Peter and Elvie on their own wedding day

Owners Peter and Elvie began designing bridal millinery from their home in 1969. In the 1980s, they bought the Pacific Highway shopfront which is now, along with the nearby Roseville Cinema, such a well-known local fixture.

Anna Zampa in the store

At Peter Trends, Monique and Paulein of course continue to create stunning bridal gowns for North Shore women. But they and the local community will forever miss the lovely Anna Zampa, who positively impacted so many families during that special moment in their lives.

IN HIS

Father’s Footsteps

BY ROBERT C. JOHNSTON, WRITER AND RESEARCHER Jack and Lucy from Gordon Shoe Repairs are celebrating the ten-year anniversary of their store in Gordon Centre; I enjoyed popping in recently for a chat and to say congratulations!

Lucy’s family was also deeply impacted by the Armenian Genocide. Her family migrated to Australia from Lebanon around forty years ago. She was in an Armenian dancing club in Sydney, and one day, when Jack was there to drop off his brother, Jack and Lucy met. They fell in love and were married in 1993. With cheap imports putting heavy strain on local shoemakers, Jack and Lucy decided to purchase the shoe repair shop in Gordon Centre. There, Jack employs his lifelong experience in shoe making to work wonders for customers, who keep coming back for something else that’s very special too: ‘It’s the community atmosphere in Gordon,’ Lucy says. ‘Everybody knows everybody. It’s lovely. The customers, it’s like a family – they know all about you and you know all about them. Even if they are not bringing repairs that day they’ll still pop in and ask how the family is doing.’

Jack and Lucy of Gordon Shoe Repair

Shoemaking is in Jack’s blood. He and his brothers are shoemakers. His father, an Armenian whose family was deported to Lebanon during the devastating 1915 Armenian Genocide, established a shoe factory in Lebanon in the 1950s. Jack joined the factory straight out of primary school in the early 1970s and has been in the shoe business ever since.

LIVING LOCAL AUTUMN 17

Many shoe shop owners around Sydney, who knew Jack from his family shoe factory days, send their customers to see him. They remember that he has the expertise and know-how. Often, before throwing old shoes away, customers will bring them in to ask Jack’s opinion. He has the honesty to tell a customer if something is worth fixing, and that’s why they like him. As Jack humbly says, ‘We want to thank the wonderful customers around Gordon, they are the reason we love it here.’ Gordon Shoe Repairs, 9499 2214.

GREAT PLACES TO PLAY ON THE NORTH SHORE

If there’s one thing I have learned it’s that all children love to play, but every child’s needs may be different. I am hoping that this information can help give all children the experience of adventure, achievement, imagination and excitement in their play. Our local governments should be providing play spaces suitable to children of all abilities, so I went out looking for them. I found two playgrounds - one on the North Shore in Chatswood, and one just off the North Shore in Ryde. In 2006, the Perkins family tragically lost their baby daughter, Olivia. Following this, the Touched by Olivia Foundation was established. One work of the Foundation is to partner with communities to build inclusive play spaces around Australia, suitable for children of all abilities. These playgrounds are each called “Livvi’s Place.” Livvi’s Place, Ryde contains sensory walks, along with steps, waves and bumps to extend skills. A fully seated flying fox can be used by younger children, and a standing flying fox is great for older kids. There are musical elements that you step on or hit, and a large sand pit which is wheelchair accessible (BYO bucket and spade). Fun mirrors, ride on cars, and a roundabout that someone could wheel onto for a spin. Even the spider climber has a bigger hole so that children with limited abilities can start to climb. The slides are cleverly designed within a hill meaning that they have no stairs or ladders and there is a pole at the top to get extra stability before you zoom down. One entrance features a beautiful mural of pictures that children have made and a sign of reminding you of a parent’s devotion to their child and passion to make our parks better. I highly recommend taking the drive to Livvi’s Place in Ryde. Beauchamp Park in Chatswood is also well designed for children of many abilities. It has ramps and word stations written in Braille and sign language. The word stations feature Australian animals in alphabetical order. It has a flying fox, huge swings, a climbing cube, slide and much more, but these are not all fully accessible. Most of the activities are accessible for children with additional needs. I would say it is a park where all children can feel that there is something for them and that they can feel included. The gardens are also lovely to wander. There

are no fences but the park is very big so it is pretty safe. My little one loved the sculptures - a “cowch” to lie on, a dog to say hello to and some gumboots to pop behind for a photo. Beauchamp Park is a good option for meeting friends and children of all abilities.

Out & About

Dear Ellen, I’m a mum with three kids, working part time. I barely have time to run a brush through my hair and now you’re telling me I need to do all this stuff to look nice? I don’t think so. Cassandra, 34, Wahroonga.

SUBMIT YOUR BEAUTY QUESTIONS #LIVINGLOCALGUIDE

Beauty time savers

Hi Cassandra, Thanks for your question. Firstly, congrats on brushing your hair - most mums are doing well to leave the house with pants on and all children intact. Hair brushing is an added bonus. Beauty magazines will tell you that you should be using a serum, moisturiser, primer, sunscreen, foundation, blush, having facials, getting a spray tan...employing a full time nanny and personal assistant so you can attend to unrealistic beauty standards unfettered by normal life. Now. You and I both know that half an hour in the mornings for a beauty routine, mostly, just isn’t going to happen but sometimes, it would be nice to feel a bit fresher and well put together-ish. So. Having firmly established that you don’t need to look like a supermodel at all times but you might like to feel fresh and look like you’ve had a few hours’ sleep, here’s some ideas to help you feel your best without investing highly valuable breakfast eating/child wrangling/remembering your keys time in the morning. 1. Buy a face and body moisturiser so you can use the one product for everything. For best results, apply it straight after your shower so your skin absorbs the moisture more effectively. 2. Use a lipstick for blush. Cream blush and lipsticks are very similar in formulation - originally ‘rouge’ was designed for both uses and the face will have a sense of balance when the cheek and lip carry the same tone.

BY ELLEN MALONE, BEAUTY EXPERT

3. Tinted brow gel is the quickest way to pull your brows into place and add a frame to the face. Just swipe and go! 4. You say BB, I say tinted moisturiser. BB creams, CC Creams and tinted moisturisers are all variations on the same theme: a tinted cream to give hydration and even out the skin when you don’t want to wear a full foundation. Most formulas also offer an SPF rating so you get three products for the price of one - quick and easy! 5. Don’t have time for mascara? Try a lash lift. It’s a tint and perm, with optional natural lash extensions. You’ll look wide eyed even when you’re short on sleep. (I know, I know, it’s an appointment and who has time for that? The upside? It’s a good excuse to escape the house alone for an hour every couple of months and it will save you time in the everyday.) 6. Sleep in a hydrating face mask. Most masks say amusing things like ‘leave on for 20 minutes while resting’ - sadly they don’t also supply the 20 minutes of rest! Hydrating and firming formulas mostly don’t need to be washed off straight away and will give an even better result if left overnight. 7. Speaking of treatments while you’re asleep...when was the last time you had 10 minutes to leave a hair mask on in the shower? That’s what I thought. Add a dollop of leave in conditioner or hair oil to your hair before bed, and just wash it out in your morning shower. 8. Buy an off white eyeliner pencil and trace it along your waterline- it will instantly make you look less tired. LIFE CRISIS: SOLVED.

Artist Edna

Turramurra has been fortunate to call artist Edna (Peg) Garran-Brown FRAS a long-time resident, inspiration and friend. Recently passing at age 98, Edna Garran-Brown (Thew), devoted her career to art: “Over 70 years (I was 18 years old when I started painting),” said Edna. In doing so she raised money for multiple charities, her main passion being to heighten public awareness of Australia’s indigenous people; in her words, “To be a voice for the forgotten Aboriginal people.” Edna has received over 100 art prizes. Her paintings have hung simultaneously in the Archibald, Sulman and Wynne, and she was an Archibald finalist 13 times. She regularly exhibited at the The Royal Art Society of NSW and the Sydney Royal Easter Show. She was elected a Fellow of the Royal Art Society of NSW (FRAS) in 1984. Her work is displayed in most Regional Gallery Permanent Collections in NSW and University Permanent Collections in NSW, as well as private collections, worldwide.

Edna was born in Brisbane in 1918. Her mother was a Sydney Conservatorium of Musictrained composer, her father a leading surgeon. She was an adoring wife to Raymond Farley Thew and her love of art continues to influence her own children and grandchildren, who will forever remember her as a wonderful, caring, loyal nana and great-nana – adored by all and who is immensely missed. Speaking of the great joy in being able to share art with those she loved most, “My daughter (artist Joanne Thew FRAS) and I have worked extensively together – travelling Australia, as well as working in my home studio in Turramurra with the music up loud,” said Edna. Edna studied for six years under Dattilo Rubbo, an Italian-born artist and art teacher active in Australia from 1897, responsible for introducing a whole generation of Australian painters to modernism through his art school. “Anthony Dattilo Rubbo, was an artist himself. He began art classes in his Sydney Bligh Street studio offering life drawing. His school became the main rival to Julian Ashton’s Sydney Art School,” said Edna. www.livinglocalguide.com.au

She had a great and inspirational passion to give to others. Her art works have supported multiple charities over the years, raising money for those in need and in her youth she was a model in the North Shore Cavalcade (an organisation with an estimated $1 million raised for charitable organisations) and she served in the Women’s Auxiliary National Service. www.livinglocalguide.com.au

Edna was a true Australian inspiration, devoted to capturing the beauty of our country and its people. A highlight in her career was meeting Emily Kame Kngwarreye (or Emily Kam Ngwarray). Emily, born in 1910, was an Australian Aboriginal artist from the Utopia community in the Northern Territory. She is one of the most prominent and successful artists in the history of contemporary indigenous Australian art. “My favourite location for inspiration is Central Australia – Kata Tjuta, Uluru and Alice Springs; how beautiful it is! The colours are magnificent,” said Edna. The construction of her work was based on rhythmic and artistic rendering, often with a series of smaller paintings, depicting various aspects of Australian scenes integrated as part of a story within a larger, single painting. Vibrating colours and discords created interplay of movement. Edna's distinctive style of painting is pure Australian (mostly in oils). She created beautiful paintings of landscapes, seascapes, wildlife, portraits, etc. Opting to stay true to the style of her homeland, Edna avoided travelling overseas to prevent influences on her own art. In her words, her inspiration came from “The great beauty of God’s creation in Australia.

MORE THAN JUST SHOPPING

AMY EDWARDS, ST IVES SHOPPING VILLAGE CENTRE MANAGER

Ahh...shopping centres, the place to visit whether you are a weekly grocery shopper, a compulsive clothes purchaser or a ‘We’re-out-of-light-bulbs’ last minute buyer. They have evolved significantly over the last century. But what about the chats with the local butcher, baker and general store owner that many past generations enjoyed? We still yearn for personal conversations in the community especially those who may live alone. Shopping Centres are increasingly embracing a sense of community. From in-centre art galleries to cake decorating, Shopping Centres are encouraging every demographic to not only come and do their shopping but to get involved in the community activities available whilst there. “When you are connected with friends and doing activities together, you have a sense of 22

purpose and belonging. Joining a group of people with the same interests makes life more fun. It improves self-confidence and self-esteem,” says Dr Suhas Mahajan, Principal GP, St Ives Medical Centre. “Our immune system gets a boost from social interaction. Socialising not only prevents loneliness but has a positive impact on general health and well-being, and helps us feel more optimistic and cheerful,” continues Dr Mahajan. As social beings there are many documented medical benefits to being social. According to a 2008 study by the Harvard School of Public Health, people who were socially integrated had less than half the memory decline of those who were socially isolated. “For the elderly, an active social life can delay memory loss. Socialising helps to keep the mind sharp and may prevent dementia. Mental health practitioners and researchers “Dream, Inspire, Grow”

have found that social isolation is unhealthy for people of all ages,” Dr Mahajan says. Whether it’s school holiday fun for the kids or the recent activities of Seniors Week NSW/ ACT, shopping centres are promoting calendar events to bring their shoppers together. “For elderly people, it is especially important to have a circle of friends with whom they can talk, have fun and engage in productive activities,” says Dr Mahajan. Our coffee shops have long embraced their role as a socialising mecca, with shoppers of all ages taking the opportunity to catch-up for a cuppa with friends. Along with the activities shopping centres are employing, having coffee is another form of social engagement providing social, physical and emotional benefits. Everyone wants and needs a sense of community, and shopping centres are proudly embracing this role. www.livinglocalguide.com.au

Once a

The North Shore has been home for Nina Paine all her life. Her father was a GP in St Ives before his death at the age of 36, and her mother was the calm and knowledgeable first point of contact for staff, students, parents and visitors at Ravenswood School for Girls in Gordon for almost 30 years. Starting out at the Garrick Avenue pre-school, then attending St Ives North Primary and St Ives High schools, and then continuing her studies at (what was then) Ku-ring-gai College of Advanced Education in Lindfield, Nina’s has been a life of geographical stability! But that stability hasn’t been echoed in every aspect of her life. She studied to be a primary school teacher, has spent most of her adult life working in publishing,

24

and somewhere in there she was also a graphic designer working at Playbill (then in Pymble). It was at Playbill she met Nita Lewis, also a graphic designer, and the two of them became lifelong friends. Nina and Nita are two of four friends and artists who have joined forces to present ‘First by 4’, with all four having worked at some stage in graphic design. It was the result of both mundane and serendipitous circumstances that, many years after having met Nita, Nina met both Joanne Martin and Nicole Miranda, and when her painting teacher encouraged her to think about exhibiting, it was Nita, Jo and Nic she turned to. So together for the first time and for one weekend only, their work will be on display

“Dream, Inspire, Grow”

at the Balmain Watch House. With inspiration coming from near and far, and the style and specific subject matter of these four women being so varied, visitors can expect an interesting collection of artworks. ‘Nita is amazing whatever she puts her hand to,’ says Nina, ‘but for this exhibition she has done the most fabulous charcoal drawings; Jo is inspired by nature and focuses on sustainability in her work, creating some wonderful 3D pieces; Nic is a painter and ceramicist who is influenced by the beauty of the natural world; and I paint with watercolours. For this exhibition my focus is on doors. ‘It is said that a person’s eyes are the window to their soul,’ she continues, ‘so perhaps a door is the window to the heart – the heart of a structure, be it a home, a gallery, a church or a restaurant, a hotel or even a prison. A door can offer a hint of what’s beating within. But only a hint! Just as the face a person presents to the public may give nothing away of what’s going on in that person’s life, doors too can hide a multitude of secrets!’ Painting images from the built environment allows Nina’s mind to wander – to places she’s been and places she’d like to go. She admits it’s an opportunity to dream, and who doesn’t enjoy dreaming! The venue – the Balmain Watch

Health, Career and Family of four including new baby boy! BY LIVING LOCAL

Rachael was crowned Miss Universe Australia in 2009. Amongst the many commitments that followed, in 2010 she starred on Dancing with the Stars, where she met husband Michael Miziner. The two were married in a private ceremony, in Woollahra, in 2013. In September of that year they welcomed their first child, a beautiful baby girl named Violet Rachael Miziner. For the past two years, Rachael and Michael have been working on their new fitness programme “Body Of Dance” released in March. The go-getter, super-mum recently managed to answer our many questions, just days after the birth of her second child (a son)!

26

LIVING LOCAL AUTUMN 17

CONGRATULATIONS! HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE MUM TO A BEAUTIFUL GIRL (VIOLET) AND NOW, BABY BOY (DOMINIC)? Thank you! We could not feel more blessed or happier with our two angels Violet and Dominic. I am still floating on clouds and can’t believe how complete I feel.

HOW DOES VIOLET FEEL ABOUT BEING A BIG SISTER?

She loves it! She helps mummy with a lot of things around the house with her new brother so it’s a new and exciting responsibility. She has taken on the role beautifully and I love seeing her so happy to have a sibling, although she is eagerly awaiting the day he can ride a scooter with her!

DO YOU THINK FITNESS HELPED YOU THROUGHOUT YOUR PREGNANCY?

Absolutely. I stayed active right up to birth and I think this played a big role in feeling great over the nine months. I’m a big believer in listening to my body each day to give it what it needs – some days I did a preggysafe circuit sessions and other days I just went through some yoga-inspired movements. My favourite things “Dream, Inspire, Grow”

www.livinglocalguide.com.au

to do during pregnancy are dancing, circuit sessions, swimming, and walking. Stretching every day is a nonnegotiable, usually before bed so I get a good night’s rest. It’s natural for the body to be moving and I noticed how much better I felt when I exercised.

DID YOU WORK OUT STEADILY THROUGHOUT YOUR PREGNANCIES OR WAS EACH TRIMESTER DIFFERENT?

Each trimester was slightly different because the body is going through different phases and needs to be cared for accordingly. I was quite sick in my first trimester, with morning sickness, so I found myself doing a lot more stretching and walking with Violet and our dog, Simba. I regained energy in the second trimester and loved being able to do more resistance and cardiovascular training including dancing and free body weighted circuit sessions. I slowed down again in the last few weeks of pregnancy and took things quite easy.

WHAT CHANGES NOW IN YOUR ROUTINE COMPARED TO THE LAST NINE MONTHS?

My body needs time to recover so I’m easing back into my fitness regime slowly by practicing yoga, walking and doing lots of things around the house! I love working out to music so I have been putting my favourite tracks on daily and dancing with Violet out on our balcony. I’m moving my body without feeling like it’s work – this is why I love dancing so much. I like to find time to meditate every day which may just be five minutes on my bedroom floor before I start my day!

HOW DID YOU ADJUST INITIALLY TO BEING A CAREER WOMAN AND HAVING A FAMILY?

There is nothing more fulfilling for me than growing a family and I treasure what I do for work, so I feel blessed to be able to do both. I have learnt not to sweat the small stuff and always remind myself of the bigger picture. Planning and preparation are big in my household, as well as the desire to accomplish goals in a variety of areas in life. Misha and I work together as a team – so I am very blessed.

WHAT ARE YOUR DAILY PRIORITIES AND HAVE THESE CHANGED SINCE HAVING A FAMILY?

The love and health within the home and family have always been number one for me. That will never change.

ARE YOU GOOD AT SAYING NO?

When I need to say no, I say no. With a busy schedule and a full house, I have learnt how to prioritise the things that are the most important and be OK with letting the smaller things wait. Children require patience so this needs to always remain. FOR FURTHER DETAILS ABOUT RACHAEL’S NEW PROGRAMME, PLEASE VISIT:

MORE FROM THIS INTERVIEW ONLINE www.livinglocalguide.com.au ALTHOUGH MODERN TECHNOLOGY CAN MAKE OUR LIVES EASIER, WE NOW SEE A HURRY SICKNESS CHALLENGING THE VALUE OF GOOD, HEALTHY AND STAY HOME MEALS. HOW DO YOU FIND TIME AND DOES IT REQUIRE PLENTY OF PLANNING?

I think adaptation is important through any phase in life, including the information age we live in. I love connecting with the world around me but I believe it’s about balance. I love creating meals that are healthy, wholesome and nutritious that don’t take much time at all so I have more time for myself and my family. A lot of the recipes in my health and fitness program B.O.D. are designed to suit anyone who is trying to manage a multitude of tasks on a daily basis (mums, full-time employees, etc.) Then of course there are days that I love spending hours in the kitchen with Violet preparing meals for when our friends come over.

DO YOU HAVE DAYS/MOMENTS WHEN YOU’RE NOT SO MOTIVATED?

Of course I do! These days come as frequent as anybody else and that’s why I am so passionate about leading a healthy and vibrant lifestyle, to feel the best you can every day and turn around the bad days quickly. Every day I nourish my body through meditation, stretching, exercise, wholesome food, a good nights’ sleep and reminding myself of what I have to be grateful for. If I need to cancel an appointment or say no to a commitment, I don’t feel guilty for this. There are also those moments when I just need to inhale and exhale much, much slower. 28

TV PRESENTER, MYER AMBASSADOR, AUTHOR, DANCER, ADVOCATE FOR HEALTHY LIFESTYLE, WIFE AND SUPER MUM. LOOKS LIKE ALL HEROINES DON’T WEAR CAPES. HOW DO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY STAY GROUNDED IN THE SPOTLIGHT?

Misha (as I love to call my husband) and I always knew at the end of the day the most important thing is that we are there for one another. I think finding love or feeling connected always reminds you of what is most important. Every day, I count my blessings for what I have and never take a second of air for granted.

YOUR NEW PROGRAMME “BODY OF DANCE” HAS JUST LAUNCHED (WE ARE SO EXCITED) – WHO SHOULD SIGN UP FOR THIS? DO YOU NEED TO BE AT ALL COORDINATED?

Everyone should sign up! You don’t need any dance experience or a partner to do the program (you don’t even have to leave your lounge room!) All you need is yourself and a desire to transform your body, soul and life. Dancing IS mind, body and soul, I love that I have a chance to share my favourite workouts with everyone. Not to mention the incredible food!

WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCITED TO SEE PEOPLE GET OUT OF THIS EXPERIENCE?

I am excited that we’re able to provide a full body, strength and toning session as well as meditation and meal plans. Dancing gets your mental juices flowing too, learning new patterns is both beneficial for the brain, and also helps with coordination and focus.

ANY TIPS ON HOW TO STICK WITH YOUR PROGRAMME AND NOT GIVE UP HALF WAY?

Once you get to experience the support and love within the B.O.D. community, motivation is easily found daily. We have so many amazing women changing their lives, becoming happier, healthier and stronger, and sharing their journey along the way. When someone is feeling a craving or wanting to ask a question, we are there to help out and motivate each other to stay on track. Plus, dancing does not feel like exercise that’s a huge reason why I love it so much.

YOU HAVE ALSO JUST LAUNCHED YOUR NEW BOOK “HAPPY HEALTHY STRONG” WHERE CAN OUR READERS BUY IT?

Writing Happy, Healthy, Strong was such a special project to work on. It was a couple of years in the making, and it feels so nice to be able to share all of my health and wellness principles and philosophies. People can order a copy online or pick up one at any good book store such as Novella Fine Books, Cards & Gifts, 5 Railway Avenue, Wahroonga.

TAKING ADVANTAGE OF OPPORTUNITIES IS

KEY TO SUCCESS

ICMS business subjects are essential for model start-up. Studying business subjects as part of a bachelor of event management at ICMS, gave Nina Perera the essential skills to start her own business. Two years down the track and Nina’s modelling agency, Neon Model Management, generates revenue of $500,000, employs 550 people and reaches 100 million social media followers. Back in 2014 when most of her fellow students were coping with the demands of student life, Nina was juggling her studies as well as getting her new enterprise off the ground. “I was learning in class about marketing, accounting, finance and strategic planning and I was then able to integrate these subjects directly into my business – and I was able to use Neon as a practical case study for many of my assignments.” Living locally, Nina was attracted to ICMS because it was close to home, offered good scholarship opportunities and she was able to study business subjects, while majoring in event management. “ICMS has a great community www.livinglocalguide.com.au

feel where you get to know most of the other students who you either see in class or during breaks. The classes aren’t large, so you also have good interaction with lecturers and tutors,” said Nina. “The college also offers excellent industry training, so alongside your degree you come out with some solid work experience, which can make a real difference when looking for a job.” Together with her studies, the advice and support from her family helped Nina get her business off the ground. Nina’s mother and sister are models and her father is in hospitality. As well as traditional model management, Neon Model Management works with social media influencers to build brands. “I saw a real opportunity in the market. Traditional modelling agencies weren’t using social media to the best of its ability, so I decided to merge the two to create something new and different. Growing up in the generation I did, I was very involved in social media and I knew that there was a market for social media to interact with the models and build influencers to work with brands,” said Nina. Today, Nina has more than 220 social media personalities, each of who has between 5,000 and five million followers on Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat and Blogs. She has worked with well-known “Dream, Inspire, Grow”

companies such as Sephora, Hurley and David Jones. Nina’s advice to school leavers and others thinking of doing tertiary study is to take every opportunity that comes to you. “My advice is to just do it, don’t be scared of failure, open yourself up to new opportunities and don’t procrastinate because that won’t get you anywhere. I wouldn’t be where I am today without the experience I had at ICMS,” Nina says. Setting up her business while studying required huge discipline and lots of long hours, Nina warns others about these stresses. “Work life balance is hugely important,” she says. “To remain fresh and positive, to connect with people and be a good person, you can’t work 24/7 – you have to have balance.” Over the next couple of years, Nina is looking to consolidate Neon’s strong growth in both Australia and overseas, and continue to grow the number of models and influencers she manages. Nina has recently started a third area of the Neon business and is managing a variety of celebrities. For the future, Nina will continue to look for and take advantage of new opportunities. “You never know what’s going to pop up and you just have to keep an eye out … and be ready.”

ASK OUR EXPERTS Your Wellbeing

Staying hydrated all year long

The heat has been over summer! If you’ve been training in the heat, it is easy to remember to keep hydrated because you’ll feel hot and thirsty. Most of you are also aware that the heat can take its toll on you physically and leave you dehydrated, even if you aren’t training. Once things start to cool down though, we tend to forget about the importance of good hydration.

SO, WHAT LEVEL OF HYDRATION IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

Body fat contains approximately 10 percent water, while muscle is approximately 75 percent water. In general, men should have a total body water percentage between 50 and 65 percent, while the ideal range for women is between 45 and 60 percent. If you have access to a set of body impedance scales, you will be able to measure your total body water. As a rule, you need to drink one litre of water per 30 kg body weight each day! 60 kg body weight requires 2 litres of water per day, 3 litres if you weigh 90 kg. Water is the best thing to drink but, if that just doesn’t excite you, we have a list of tasty and easy to make juices and naturally flavoured waters to get you by. Juicing has become very popular and when you limit the amount of fruit it can also be low in sugar. When juicing try and juice more veg than fruit, think of fruit like the sweetener. We have some simple recipes to get you started, and you can blend all these juices in a standard juicer or even a high-power blender. Try our recipes or make up your own adding whatever you like. 32

sustainable and eco-friendly Ecodownunder founder, Russell Lamb first began importing linen from China. Whilst it was profitable, the products were manufactured without any regard to health and the environment, which conflicted with Russell’s vision: to be sustainable and eco-friendly.

feel of the fabric. Ecodownunder excludes these environmental and health hazards from their production process. When buying linen, it can be hard to tell if chemicals have been used, but read the label and between the lines. If it’s called “non-iron finish,” or “wrinkle free”, it’s likely that the fabric has been bathed in resins or formaldehyde, a recognized carcinogen and the suspected cause of a range of other health problems. These chemical coatings destroy one of the inherent qualities of natural fibres, that they breathe and are absorbent, which is why natural fibres are so comfortable to sleep in. Check out the experiment in the photos below to see the effect of a drop of water on a treated quilt cover (left) in comparison with an ecodownunder quilt cover (right) and you‘ll see what happens to the moisture as your body perspires at night.

Pursuit of this vision led to Ecodownudner; ’eco’ because objectives are to be sustainable and ‘downunder‘ in support of Australian manufacturers wherever possible. Whilst there was a fashionable buzz within the retail industry around eco themes and a sense of urgency, the average customer wasn’t buying based on environmental considerations. Russell recognised that the road ahead would take time and education to change buying behaviour and that he shouldn’t let “perfect get in the way of good.” Ecodownunder’s first product was an Australian made, naturally coloured cotton towel which was sold at markets. Their first store then opened in Mona Vale 14 years ago. Today, there are 15 stores around Sydney, more in the pipeline and an online store which is steadily growing. All products are made from natural fibres and from eco or organic cotton. Many people aren’t aware that buying cotton doesn’t always mean it’s good. There are manufacturers who use toxic chemicals, chlorine bleaches and resin coatings to improve the supposed look and 34

producers and of course the whole environment. Ecodownunder produces everything you need to dress your bed, from mattress protectors to sheets, quilts, quilt covers, pillows, throws and cushion covers. Also selling a range of towels for bathroom, beach and decorator items for the home. Created from a range of signature colours, inspired by the Australian coast for both contemporary and classic homes. Life’s busy but owners Russell Lamb and Beverley Tilbury are committed to Sea Shepherd and their battle to protect and conserve the ocean. The stores sell a range of Sea Shepherd merchandise to help with fundraising and of course have donated sheets and towels for the benefit of crews on antiwhaling campaigns. They also help out regularly in community and local fund raising activities in support of a range of causes. Russell says they “work hard to keep their prices down without squeezing suppliers. And focus on providing quality products which they offer at “every day fair prices”. Many retailers seem to inflate their prices for a period in order to be able to offer up to 60% off at a later date. “It amazes us when we see their massively discounted prices still sometimes topping our everyday price!” www.livinglocalguide.com.au

Why are ecodownunder sheets so comfortable?

It’s the things we don’t do that make our sheets so comfortable. We don’t use chemical coatings We don’t use chlorine bleaches We don’t use synthetic fibres Thanks to the things we don’t do, our sheets breathe and are super absorbent, which makes them a lot more comfortable to sleep between and good for you too!

Property Dealings BY JULIE RODGERS, TURRAMURRA NORTH REAL ESTATE

Perhaps you may not be aware that when you either sell your home or lease a property (which may be an investment property or your own home), you have obligations regarding disclosure of certain facts.

of “material fact” such as flooding or bushfire in the previous five years, health or safety risks that are not obvious on inspection, or if the property has been the scene of a violent crime in the previous five years, the tenant must be informed. When selling, vendors have similar obligations and it is important to disclose these facts to your agent when you are signing either a management agreement or a sales agreement with them. Agency members of the Real Estate Institute of New South Wales use comprehensive forms which are designed to comply with relevant legislation. These forms are updated to cater for any amendments but we suggest you obtain legal advice to ensure you are fulfilling your responsibilities. A well-trained and experienced

Most people now know that swimming pools need to have a compliance certificate issued for any new lease agreements, and that either a certificate of compliance or a certificate of non-compliance must be included in sales contracts. The legislation also stipulates that landlords must inform tenants if there is “any proposal to sell the residential premises, if the landlord has prepared a contract for sale of the residential premises.” If a landlord is aware of matters 42

property professional will be aware of “best practice” and will minimise your exposure to potential risk. Your agent should be familiar with all the legislation applicable to property dealings. These encompass a wide variety of acts including those relating to AntiDiscrimination, Conveyancing, Privacy, Residential Tenancies and Work, Health and Safety. Whether you are selling or leasing, the benefits of using a qualified and committed agent will usually outweigh the costs involved. They provide a buffer between you and your purchaser or tenant. By not being emotionally tied to the transaction, your agent is able to offer strong communication and negotiation skills, and to resolve any conflict between parties. PREPARING FOR THE HSC

THREE/TEN TIPS TO HELP PARENTS

(VISIT WEBSITE FOR FULL STORY)

BY MS DEB MAGILL, PRINCIPAL AT ROSEVILLE COLLEGE

As Year 11 students embark on their HSC journey, many Year 10 students (and their parents) also begin thinking about and preparing for the HSC ahead. At Roseville College, there is a phrase that is often repeated by members of the academic staff, as well as by current and former students: “This is your journey. No two HSC experiences are alike”.

greater test: the HSC student or their family. No matter how we look at it, the HSC is a testing time. So, to offer some guidance, these are my top 10 tips (please find more online linked at the end of this page) for parents with a teenager in Years 10 - 12: . Remember the Basics We’ve said it before to our children and our students, and we’ll say it again: eat well and rest well…A recap: • Healthful food is good for learning and energy; fast sugars not so. • Water is vital; drink it, bathe in it, relax by it. • Balance is integral; plan a smart routine and schedule regular exercise. • Give your brain a break; sometimes it is good not to study. • Restrict technology, especially non-productive screen time and definitely in the hours before sleep. . (Re)Discover Your Child as the Adult They Nearly Are Your child is coming of age. The HSC is a learning process that culminates in a series of examinations. This is part of their

1

Hidden in this grain of wisdom is a massive warning to parents: And there simply is no “one right way” to be an HSC cheer-squad. As parents shadow their adored offspring through Years 11 and 12, their tales about a stranger living in their house, months of abdicated chores, diva-esque study demands, and parents literally tiptoeing around their own home are told with increasing exaggeration and (in hindsight) humour. With no thanks to tall tales like these, which perhaps are very real in the moment, few parents embrace the beginning of the HSC with glee. As parents, it is fair for us to expect that we will ask ourselves, at least once, who is actually going through the

2

journey. It also coincides with another milestone process: that of our children transforming into adults who learn to drive, seek independence and dictate their own terms. Step back. Look at who they are. Rather than lament the fading child, look to discover the emerging adult. Guide them and like them. Yes, like them, and work hard at enjoying the journey they’re taking us on. . The Art of Letting Go As you discover your emerging adult (aka. your son or daughter), it’s not surprising to remember that the road to independence is increasingly… independent. For this reason, beside an emerging adult, we can usually find at least one emerging hands-off-and-let-goand-I’m-here-if-you-need-me parent, who is also trying to work out what they should do and what they no longer need to do. (So, do be a willing listener, do listen without giving unsolicited advice, and do expect and forgive your child’s very strong emotions.) When parents let go of their own opinions and reactions, many find their child’s road to independence is mutually beneficial!

TAKE CHILDREN’S MUSIC EDUCATION TO ANOTHER LEVEL

Tina Harris - the stripy sock singing and dancing star of the award winning ABC KIDS TV show LahLah’s Adventures runs Lah-Lah Productions with husband Mark - Buzz the Bandleader. Behind it all she is a passionate early childhood music advocate, so at its core, Lah-Lah is about introducing kids to music and musical instruments.

Music Room is designed to spread music into schools and daycares by parents. A simple but powerful formula; for every program bought by a family, Lah-Lah will gift that program and teachers’ resources to their chosen school or daycare. While visiting local centres, Tina identified that music opportunities for preschool aged children were extremely varied. Some centers had little resources or no educators with early childhood music training while others had lots. By allowing parents to "pay music forward" schools and daycares receive the resources free of charge but more importantly, because it’s

OUR LOCAL Room Renovations

BY LIVING LOCAL

Home maintenance never stops; in fact, life never stands still! That’s why we need to renovate and refresh from time-to-time. It can often, but doesn’t always need to be expensive. We love a home that’s comfortable, where we can be ourselves and also be hospitable to people around us. Over the next months, Living Local are going to be following a couple of local room makeovers. Creating can be fun, especially when it has a good purpose behind it, a purpose to help all involved, feel more at home. Below is a sneal peak at what we will be following...

1. Kid’s bedroom Killara

2. Dining Room/Kitchen Cremorne

Situation: This is the baby’s room. The baby has grown-up and we now look forward to seeing it being transformed into a ‘tween” appropriate room. The room needs to suit him throughout his teenage years too.

Situation: Our dining room feels poky and there isn’t enough light. The corner is especially dark, this results in the area not being used. With space limited already, we can’t afford to have areas with no use.

Goal: A fun space, suitable for doing homework, hanging out and sleeping comfortably. We also want to get rid of the carpet, to help combat against dust allergies and ensure there is enough storage. Can’t wait to see what we do with the room.

Goal: We want to knock down the wall between the kitchen and dining room to create more light and increase practical space! We also want to create a study area, incorporated in with the kitchen design. With the wall removed the area will feel much more open, usable and lighter. The flooring will also need to be evened and replaced. We have chosen to go with a floatign timber floor.

Who: It’s a family DIY project!! We hope to all get involved! Budget: Absolute minimum. We want to use what we have, ask family what they have and source cost effective alternatives when needed. Using stores like Bunnings for paints, flooring, shelving and of course Pinterest for inspiration.

Who: We have called on Impala Kitchens, Choices Flooring and BWDerrin Constructions. Budget: $30,000. We have decided to move out for six weeks and hand our keys over to Impala Kitchens to project manage everyone.

Greenery - Always in Fashion BY SUSAN POTTHURST, ELEGANT OUTDOORS GARDEN CENTRE, TURRAMURRA If I said to you "You need some 15-0343 in your life" you’d probably look at me and think, has she gone mad? What on earth is she talking about? Well, this 6-digit number is the Pantone Colour Institute’s™ colour of 2017 called, quite simply Greenery and being in the plant business I’m obviously a massive fan of this decision! It is described as "A life-affirming shade, emblematic of the pursuit of personal passions and vitality." PCI’s Executive Director also tells us "Satisfying our growing desire to rejuvenate and revitalise, Greenery symbolises the reconnection we seek with nature, one another and a larger purpose" and I must say, I think that’s a very fine and fair comment don’t you?

We’re all in pursuit of a decent work-life balance and I think that creating a “green-life” balance at home will go a good way to achieving this. No matter what your colour scheme is, adding plants will not upset the palette at all - in fact they will only enhance it. Plants cleanse the air and add life to every room in the house. www.livinglocalguide.com.au

They improve concentration, nurture relaxation, and let’s face it, soften every one of the hard angles in our homes. I know all too well that people think looking after house plants is hard work, but that’s nonsense. I’m surrounded by them all day, every day so you’d think that the last thing I’d want is to go home and do it all again – wrong! Pot plants are dead easy to maintain – here are just a few that are visually enticing and texturally interesting to suit everyone.

Zanzibar Gem and MotherIn-Law’s Tongue are both exceptionally hardy plants that can take low light and are moreor-less allergic to water. Mine are in my bathrooms and I give them a drink every three months – yes, honestly, that’s all they need! Most of us have a narrow window sill, so choose small plants that won’t outgrow their pots. My favourites are Syngonium Pixie, Fittonia, Peperomia, Homalomena and Elkhorn Ferns.

Feeling retro? Monsteria, or Swiss Cheese Plant as I’ve always known it, makes a fabulous statement in a lifeless corner and the good old Devil’s Ivy (Epipremnum) with its heart shaped leaves and trailing habit looks great cascading from the top shelf of a cabinet or of course in a hanging basket outside in semi-shade. “Dream, Inspire, Grow”

BY KATE MILES

WHAT MADE YOU START A REAL ESTATE BUSINESS IN SUCH A COMPETITIVE ENVIRONMENT? Having studied a Bachelor of Applied Science in Building at university I’ve always had a very keen interest in housing. My first full time job when finishing at uni was in real estate sales and as a young salesman I was very lucky to receive a wealth of training. I really enjoyed the work, dealing with different people, and with that came great results. I was fascinated by the psychology of sales which led me into the field of advertising and marketing. Fast forward 18 years, after working for some of Australia’s largest advertising agencies and advertising sales companies, and having established a successful advertising media business, I found myself searching for a family home in the area. With previous experience and extensive training in real estate, it was interesting to deal with 56

the agents. I saw an opportunity for an agent/agency with real-world advertising and marketing experience as well as an understanding of design and construction, not just sales.

WHAT WAS THE ATTRACTION TO THE NORTH SHORE? I grew up in Turramurra and my mother still lives in the same house off Bannockburn Rd. My wife’s family lives in Galston so we’re close to both sets of grandparents (aka babysitters). It’s a fantastic area for schools and along with the influx of young families moving from the lower north shore and inner west, the café, bar and restaurant scene has improved dramatically. Great spots have popped up in Wahroonga, North Turramurra, Turramurra and St Ives. I remember when Kipling’s Garage was actually a garage! I bought my first car privately from a family in Graham Ave, Pymble, and spent countless hours rebuilding it at the suspension shop that used to be next door. “Dream, Inspire, Grow”

HOW ARE YOU ENJOYING LIVING AND WORKING IN TURRAMURRA? The environment and people couldn’t be better. My daughter is at Warrawee Public School where we’ve met some lovely families and made great friends. The parents genuinely care about the school and show great passion for their children’s education. Being a local business has allowed me to help contribute to the school’s fundraising efforts and I’m proud to say that Century 21 Radar Properties is now a foundation Community Partner of the Warrawee P & C Association. The business itself is growing very well with a very experienced local property manager, Andrea Sharpe, joining the company six months ago. In fact, if anybody reading this has an interest in real estate or knows someone in real estate that might want a positive change, please let me know. The business is expanding and we’re looking for good people to join the team! www.livinglocalguide.com.au
