Food is an amazing thing. We all need it daily and living in Australia, we're extremely lucky to have the quality we can choose to eat. Food is my passion – good food, real food. Nine years ago I made the decision to buy our own farm and produce the best food we could, source the best genetics in cattle and now sheep and ethically raise animals better than it was being done elsewhere. Not just selling beef but growing it and knowing it. The complete circle. Raising and aging it as we like and being in control of every process along the way. And as it has evolved, so has my passion to produce the best food grown. Now we are running two farms. We are breeding most of our cattle at our cool climate farm at Carcoar, in the Central Tablelands. We have cooler summers, long winters and a four-month spring. This allows us to cut a lot of hay in spring to carry us through winter. Our original farm near Dunedoo in the Central West area is where we move our cattle when they
are about eight months old. This has much warmer winters and terrific winter feed. We also run all our sheep here as well, about 400 at present. The two farms in conjunction work very well. Obviously, all meat sold comes from a farm but being hands on really allows us to make conscious decisions and raise animals ethically. Minimal stress, not using dogs, not using electric prodders, moving stock quietly, knowing and respecting the animals. We have a lot of the same breeding cows we had nine years ago. It’s more than just saying, "I meet the guy that grows this beef." I know what they eat: I plant it. And I know what goes on it: I spread the organic compost. To me, the farms are really just an extension to the butcher shop, producing good wholesome food. Our sheep are going amazingly well, lots of autumn born lambs, plenty of twins and growing fast. At Dunedoo we have had the best late summer and autumn rains for years. We have green food a
The Food Business – it’s not just about selling a steak or a chop – to us it’s more about a passion. We love our shop, our farm and our animals. We are proud of what we do. We work hard to produce "fine food" and luckily we have won "Best Gourmet Lamb Product"for the 2nd year in a row. Twenty years ago I made the decision to make our sausages lean and healthy, with all natural and fresh produce, and that was a big step then when there was more money to be made taking short cuts. It was a decision that helped build our business and reputation, and is basically a statement of what I think food should be, after all we are what we eat! Our shops at Turramurra are unique; they have a real community village feel, an atmosphere that is hard to find in a city. It was great to see how the people rallied to fight a huge development. It is a pleasure to work and own a business in such a great community with people that are not only my customers but also my friends. The fact that you appreciate good food makes our job a whole lot easier!

Like the citizens of other global cities, Sydneysiders have always sought to keep up with the latest fashion trends. The First Fleet’s arrival in 1788 brought with it ambitious Royal Navy officers and wives keen to ensure that their position in the fledgling Colonial society could be secured. A sure-fire way to demonstrate one’s status was to be seen wearing beautifully tailored clothes. Has anything changed?

Just when you thought the rules around superannuation weren’t going to change, we get hit with proposed new legislation that will impact many people.

It was no surprise to our financial planning practice, but our last article generated the most number of phone calls concerning the proper use of selfmanaged super funds (SMSF). BLACK &WHITE A variety of people get photographed at Fashion Week: editors, makeup artists, hair dressers, fashion bloggers, buyers, photographers, models, etc…And their outfit varieties are endless. Although there was plenty of variety, what stood out to me the most this year was the black and white. It’s a uniform and a good one! When in doubt, I say, go black and white. When life gets busy, we need to simplify and for me, black and white helps simplify the outfit choice without loosing the style.

ashion week is a great opportunity to see what the top artists are doing in the world of beauty, and this year didn’t disappoint. Whilst of course every show is different, there were some clear trends shining through on the catwalk. Here’s how you can get them right at home- no beauty team needed.

This year’s runways boasted glowing, fresh skin. The dominant look was soft highlighting, rather than extreme highlighting and contouring. Try: mixing an illuminating liquid with your usual foundation for a sheer, fresh finish.
Whilst the overall feel of this year’s beauty was somewhat minimal, there were some amazing metallic or graphic eye make ups. Try a metallic or coloured liner with an otherwise soft look to make your eyes pop. Top tip: this year’s grey/green metallic eyes look great on almost everybody and work with any outfit colour.
After several years of huge brows being in fashion ( thanks Cara D) the natural brow is back. A soft arch was paired with sophisticated eyes at misha - try a sweep of clear brow gel to tame any strays and keep brows in place all day long.

After launching her debut brand, P.E Nation at MercedesBenz Fashion Week, we caught up with Pip Edwards to talk growing up on the North
ood h r e h n , Mot rth Shore o i h s a F ’s No y e n d y and S Shore. The 36 year old businesswoman, Design Director at General Pants and mum to 10-year-old Justice Maximus lived in St Ives and attended Corpus Christie then
Ravenswood School for Girls. “I got all nostalgic [answering these questions]… I really did have a great childhood living on the North side.”
How did growing up on the North Shore shape where you are today?
I loved growing up in St Ives. I lived in a beautiful two-storey home with a pool in the quiet cul-de-sac off Torokina Avenue. The kids of the cul-de-sac were all great friends, and we would play in the street, climb trees and ride our bikes as a gang – it had this community feel, where kids actually played in their street every afternoon, after school. It’s something my son won’t get to experience growing up in Bondi Beach. It’s just so different now. I sometimes drive past my old family home just to remember the feeling of freedom as a kid. Growing up on the North Shore taught me appreciation and gratitude, I choose to live in an apartment in Bondi now, which I love, but having space and freedom as a kid has taught me to always be grateful.
Can you share a fond memory as a Ravenswood girl?
In my final year of Ravenswood, I was captain of music for my house, (York), and we won the house music choir competition!!! I chose a Billy Joel Medley, that I composed especially for this comp and I had to teach and conduct the whole of York house to sing it in parts, with a mini orchestra. It was very exciting, as I think I was quite the underdog. It was definitely a proud moment for my parents.
How did you enter into the fashion industry? 24
According to my mother, I have loved fashion from the age of three. At Ravenswood I did textiles and design until Year 9 – I wasn’t that great at it admittedly, however, I always knew what my aesthetic was. In my year book for 1992 (when I was in Year 9), there is a photo of me modelling my textiles end of year design (it was a mustard mini skirt and black turtle neck top worn with Doc Martins and a scrunchie, haha) and the caption under the photo says “Phillippa Edwards: Fashion Designer of Tomorrow” – how crazy is that! Anyway, my first job was actually at PricewaterhouseCoopers in Risk Management. I did, however; work in fashion retail all throughout university – so I was building my practical experience of the industry without even knowing it. It was only after three years at PwC that I jumped ship and crossed over to fashion, to work in PR and then later in the design team.
Was there a turning point in what spring-boarded your business to where you are today? My business partner and Cofounder of P.E Nation, Claire, and I, were very lucky to have each other but we were also fortunate to partner with an investor. With our combined talents, we have been able to fast track our business in just months, which would usually take years.
What have been the positive things that have laid the foundations for you to be successful in business?

Connections and relationships. The network of relationships that I have built over the years have been priceless to the process of setting up the business, priceless to sales, the PR/ marketing strategy that we have in place and paramount to the way we operate. Good, healthy, honest relationships are everything in business. Admittedly, P.E Nation has been able to leverage the personal profile I have built over the years (as a by-product of my work) – and having this voice in the market has definitely been an advantage. Networking is key for business. However, being genuine, engaged and interested is a key factor to networking. It’s a very fickle and transparent industry where everyone can talk the talk, but you have to be able walk the walk as well.
What were the hard things that laid the foundations for you to be successful in business?
The hard yards were actually the last 15 years of working in the industry, understanding different businesses and learning from them in their own unique way. Each of my three key roles in the industry laid a very solid foundation to what now seems like common knowledge to me. From Ksubi to sass & bide and then General Pants, I have pretty much ticked and covered off most scenarios in fashion. It is always a work in progress and you are always learning but my experience has definitely paid off. How did you pick yourself up again?
Passion is always the one thing that keeps me motivated. Passion and love. I definitely have a deep, pure love for fashion. I love the stylistic side and the creative side but I really love the philosophical side and understanding demographics, human behaviour, interaction and how that impacts consumer needs and wants. Basically what we do every day dictates what we buy. So once you really understand your audience, you know how to serve them in new ways.
How do you keep it real in the fashion industry?
My son, Justice (10), keeps my life very real, and I love him more than anything. He brings me right back down to earth and reminds me what is important, he simplifies everything. He keeps me on track. Without him, I’m not sure I’d have such a deep purpose to keep going.
How do you find balance between being a working mum and your personal life?
With the helping hand of my mother and father. It’s the only way all of this would be possible. It’s a daily juggle and sometimes a struggle. I grew up with my mother always around doing everything with me and for me. Unfortunately, it’s not the same for my son, Justice, as I work so much and so hard. However, my mother is there for both him and I, and I know I am one lucky daughter. When I am with my son, it’s all about him. I make sure I am 100% present with him and it mostly involves a bit of basketball!
How often do you visit the North Shore? I generally visit on the way through to our beach house in Avoca, maybe three-four times a year.
Lastly, what is your greatest business hope?
To open P.E Nation stores globally.
What is your top fashion tip to give our readers when getting ready in the morning?
Have an idea of what you might be wearing the night before!! That always helps me. I’m so time poor in the morning so I lay my clothes out before I go to bed.

MUSCLES MATTER TO METABOLISM “Maintaining regular exercise – particularly weight bearing exercise or strength training – can halt or slow down the normal decline in your metabolic rate,” says Matt. In fact, for every kilo of muscle you keep on your body as you age, you burn 10 calories a day at rest – that’s even before you start your training session. “It may sound small, but over a year or a decade it makes a real difference to your waistline.” Remember, you can dramatically increase your metabolic rate with regular cardio excise, but the key – especially once you reach your 30s, 40s and beyond – is high effort training. To get the maximum benefit, Matt suggest performing high effort, even exhaustive, training sessions two to three times a week. “A metabolic workout boosts your fitness so that you can come back and workout harder, and burn more calories, next time,” he says. “Before you know it you’ll be burning more calories and increasing your muscle mass to help raise your metabolism.”

PROTEIN PACKS POWER When it comes to increasing your metabolism, the first food to focus on including into your diet is protein. Why? Protein contains amino acids that your muscles use as building blocks. “Specifically, you should have at least one gram of protein per kilogram of body weight every day,” advises Matt. “So, if you weigh 65 kilos that’s at least 65 grams of protein a day.” Plus, protein in food takes more energy to digest and absorb than carbohydrate or fat. So, eating protein-rich foods like fish, chicken, and lean meats makes your body work harder and burn more calories to process what you eat. Did you know that cats and dogs age 6-7 times more quickly than we do meaning they are seniors from around 7-10 years of age! When our furry friends reach this stage of life they need more frequent checkups to help manage any potential problems. For some common problems, in particular proper function of the internal organs, screening blood and urine testing may reveal any potential problems. For this reason it is recommended to have an annual general blood and urine screening for your senior pals. A simple yet important urine test can detect potential life threatening conditions before they become untreatable, it’s a window into your pet’s health. Increasing knowledge has spurred a renewed interest in the centuries-old practice of food fermentation such as Kamboucha, kefir, and yoghurt. Probiotic bacteria may even be useful in re-setting your microbial GI ecosystem after taking a course of antibiotics. Speaking of antibiotics: a single genera of fungi called Penicillium is responsible for the production of penicillin (the first “true” antibiotic) and for the particular flavour and appearance of blue cheese - amazing! Beyond our bodies and our kitchens, microbes play a major role in the health of our environment. Algae and cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) produce around 75% of Earth’s oxygen. Back on land, inside the roots of legumes, Rhizobium converts nitrogen from the air so it can be used by plants and animals. The 3 Stages Of Retirement At this stage, you’re less likely to be earning any extra income from work. You may also spend less on travel and leisure, shifting your financial focus towards taking care of your health.
Australians are living longer than ever before. So it’s important to be financially ready for retirement - and the changes to your lifestyle along the way. While it’s great that we’re living longer, it means we need to be better prepared financially for our later years. It’s also important to realise that our lifestyle is likely to change during retirement, with each stage having particular financial needs. Of course, every person is different, but here’s a broad overview of what each of the three retirement stages could look like for you. EARLY RETIREMENT Early retirement usually begins in your early 60s and can last right up to your mid-70s, depending on your health and energy levels. The main focus should be on enjoying the free time that comes from no longer having to work - or perhaps only working a few hours a week on the things you really enjoy. This may allow you to spend more time with family and friends, start a new hobby or take those trips you’ve always dreamed of. This is likely to be the most expensive time of your
retirement, with much of your spending going on travel and leisure activities, or perhaps to help your children or grandchildren get ahead financially. You may also decide to renovate your home, now that the kids have gone and you’re spending more time there. If you’re working part time, you may have extra income on top of your super or aged pension. But even then, you’re likely to choose more conservative investments that focus on preserving your wealth for the years ahead. MID-RETIREMENT Your mid-retirement period might start anytime from your late 60s, and may continue into your early 80s. During this stage, you may find your energy levels slowing and your desire to travel or participate in more active hobbies diminishing. You may also decide to downsize to a smaller home, which involves managing the costs associated with buying and moving to a new property. What’s more, the money you put away from the sale of your house could also reduce your aged pension entitlement, so it’s worth seeking professional financial advice before making any major decisions.
LATE RETIREMENT During the final stage of retirement, you may need to pay for extra support to maintain your home and take care of yourself. Your health is also likely to need more attention. As your accommodation and healthcare needs change, you may decide to move to a retirement village or nursing home — a transition which needs particular financial attention. It’s also essential that you’ve put your affairs in order through proper estate planning. What Is Your Money Personality? BY BLAKE CHANDLER A lot of marketing tells you where to invest your money and what you should be doing next. It is probably accurate and smart but it may not engage you personally. One way to approach your financial life is to first understand yourself: what drives you? What are you avoiding? How do you form goals? Have a think about your money personality, its strengths and weaknesses – it probably falls into one of these categories: Enthusiast: if you’ve engaged with financial planning, expect to retire early and have confidence in your decisions, you’re probably an Enthusiast. Your money attitude is practical and decisive because you read widely, seek out experts and monitor details. Enthusiasts are predominantly men and make up 14 per cent of the adult population but hold one-third of Australia’s personal wealth. You likely have a spread of investments across all classes and probably an SMSF; more than half of Enthusiasts have a financial planner. Delegator: delegators have a similar financial awareness and conscientiousness to enthusiasts but lacking in knowledge or confidence, they outsource to experts. They are predominantly female, make up 19 per cent of
the population and hold 18 per cent of private wealth. There’s nothing wrong with being a delegator but sourcing the right advice is important. Avoider: you’re an avoider if you have negative emotional reactions, such as anxiety, to the subject of money. The key to this cohort is passivity: finding an excuse to not see an adviser, not have a plan, not take an interest in superannuation. Avoiders make up one-fifth of the population but hold only 9 per cent of personal wealth. Avoiders are usually female (65%) and under 40. Conservative DIY: if you’re engaged in your finances, research your options and make considered decisions while avoiding financial planners, you’re probably a conservative DIYer. They are generally careful and confident. Conservative DIYers are 15 per cent of the population but hold 20 per cent of personal wealth and although they’re average income earners they have high net-worth. Their investments are in term deposits and property to managed funds and shares.
Player: players are not as volatile as they sound. They like share markets and higher-risk/reward investments but they consider themselves stable and decisive. Around 70 per cent of them are male and live in cities, and they are predominantly under 40. Players comprise 15 per cent of the population and hold 13 per cent of private wealth. Too Busy: if you like the idea of creating wealth and retiring well, but you don’t engage advisers and you’re not doing anything with super other than the employer’s contribution, you’re probably Too Busy. You have a life, right? You’re probably under 40, don’t have income protection or life insurance and while your cohort is 15 per cent of the population, you own 11 per cent of personal wealth. Your income is average to above-average but you haven’t really made a plan yet. See yourself in any of these? Know yourself, understand your own circumstances and then make a plan to how you can get the best out of your finances with your money personality.

Everyone’s favourite children’s television show Play School is heading to Sydney this September and October with their new show “Humpty’s Showtime”. Locally, it will be performing at North Sydney Leagues Club on Sunday 25 September and at Hornsby RSL on Thursday 29 September. Suburb Safari GREAT PLACES TO PLAY ON THE NORTH SHORE If you’re looking for places to take the little ones, Turramurra boasts helpful parks and playgrounds on both sides of the Pacific Highway. On the Kissing Point side, Hamilton Park is great for the active family. Little kids will enjoy the fire truck, slide and swings, while the older kids will enjoy running around the field or playing on the basketball court. It has it’s own car park and is away from the road, and feels nicely tucked away behind the houses. It is definitely worth a trip if you need to tire the little ones out before rest time. Over on the Eastern Road side, Turramurra Memorial Park and the connected Karuah Park is a lovely place to spend a sunny day. On weekends you’ll have plenty of local sporting teams to watch, but the kids can also play in one of several areas. Near the tennis courts and well away from the road is a great little playground for the toddlers. My little one loved the large animal sculptures and the slides. But then she saw the flying foxes. These are fantastic, safe, and, being a pair, more than one child can ride at once. No more fights between siblings over who gets the next turn! There are table tennis tables, swinging cargo nets, and a fun spinner. Add to this the fitness area which my little one loves, even if she can’t do a chin up yet, and a walking track around the end of the oval, and you have a great place to spend a few hours.

You Know It Makes Sense BY SUSAN POTTHURST, ELEGANT OUTDOORS, TURRAMURRA GARDEN CENTRE
It’s a well-known fact that time spent in natural environments provides a wide range of physical and mental health benefits and whilst most gardens offer a visual appeal, a sensory garden stimulates all of our five senses, so let’s use them! By combining both soft and hard elements in your green space you can create a beautiful place to relax, reflect, contemplate, talk, play and laugh. Think about who will use your garden, their ages and abilities and also the types of plants you can grow for culinary use or craft activities. I’d like to share with you some of my personal favourites that invigorate my senses. TASTE. The Tahitian lime is, hands down, my favourite citrus fruit. Using the zest and juice with fresh avocado, mash them together to give a fantastic zingy kick to chicken burritos. Think outside the usual herb palette and try Sorrel – mix it in with other salad leaves for an unusual, unexpected but delightful citrusy hit. www.livinglocalguide.com.au
TOUCH. Place soft leafed plants close to pathways so you can run your fingers through them. I love tactile feathery ferns, stroking the fresh spring growth of weeping Japanese maples and the oh-so velvety leaves of the Lamb’s Ears (Stachys byzantine). SMELL. By spacing fragrant plants at intervals in your garden they won’t confuse or overwhelm you so you’ll be able to appreciate each one’s scent independently. Gently squeeze the leaves of lavender to release the oils then put your hand to your nose & take a deep breath in. If you remember and love the smell of old fashioned pink bubble gum, you’ll adore the perfume of the Port Wine Magnolia (Michelia figo) which is at its most fragrant at dusk. HEARING. Textured pathways, like crushed gravel, add interest to the garden and help vision-impaired people to recognise where they are, giving them more confidence to move around. The sound of a water feature is very soothing, so place a bench near it when you want to relax after a long day with a cool drink.
SIGHT. Colours, shapes and focal points create a wonderful visual impact in any outdoor space. Topiaries, especially Japanese box (Buxus microphylla Japonica) are so well suited to Sydney and come in all shapes and sizes. Brightly coloured flowering perennials that bloom in each of the seasons means you’ll enjoy colour all year round. Why not introduce some garden art – statues or sculptures that define your personality make your garden individual and so special to you.
