MCGINLEY SWIPE ACCESS

For everyone's safety, please remember to swipe your ID at the front desk when you enter the building. We are then able to verify residents and check in guests. The swipe readers on the exterior doors only unlock the doors. However, the front desk swipe reader is not associated with a door. It is a tool that helps us verify who is entering the building.

It is important that we verify who is entering the building in order to keep our community safe. Thank you for your assistance in keeping our community safe!

Alcohol Awareness

Community Rules and Regulations

During the fall semester, DU Cares hosts an annual Alcohol Awareness Week to encourage safe, healthy behaviors within our community.

As a reminder, the minimum legal drinking age in the United States is 21 years old. All students of legal drinking age are expected to consume alcohol responsibly. Marijuana, whether prescribed or recreational, is not permitted on campus.

Any person(s) found to be consuming or distributing alcohol or other substances will be subject to disciplinary action up to and including suspension and/or expulsion.

Please see the graphic below for more information.

Checking in Alcohol:

One case of beer or malt beverage (cans only)

One (0.75 liters) bottle of distilled spirits, i.e. whiskey, bourbon, vodka, etc

One bottle of wine (1.5 liters or less)

All of the above must be in their original, unopened containers with clearly marked labels when checked in at your building’s front desk.

Building Safety

Additionally, please be reminded of the following important information:

· Fire Alarm Systems

All Duquesne University Living Learning Centers are classified as high-rise buildings. High-rise buildings, which are fully sprinklered, alarm on the floor of an incident, the floor above, and the floor below (for St. Ann, this only applies to the wing where the incident originates). Therefore, not all residents within a building will hear an alarm. These fire alarm requirements limit congestion in egress stairwells and other escape routes. If needed, the alarm can be put into full alarm, alerting all building occupants.

· Evacuation Drills

Building Safety

Evacuation drills are conducted twice per year, giving building occupants the opportunity to practice and to become familiar with evacuation routes. During evacuation drills, occupants are timed, designated as “pass” or “fail” for each building. All buildings will be evacuated, including academic, non-academic, and residence life buildings.

· Evacuation Procedure

Begin evacuating a building at the first sign of smoke or when notified via an alarm, strobe, and/or personnel. Stop what you are doing and quickly proceed to your nearest exit. Remain calm. Do not run and do not use the elevators. Proceed to a safe gathering point away from the main entrance point(s). Stay with your group and wait for instructions to re-enter the building.

· Fire Extinguishers

If you are safely able to use a fire extinguisher (you know what’s burning, the fire is contained, and you can position yourself with an exit to your back), the following information will help you remember how fire extinguishers operate. To use a fire extinguisher, remember the acronym “P-A-S-S”. PASS stands for – 1) Pull the pin, 2) Aim at the base of the fire, 3) Squeeze the handle, and 4) Sweep side to side.Watch a short video on Fire Extinguisher Training using the PASS method.

Fire Prevention Month

Safe Practices

Keep an eye on your food while actively using the oven or stovetop. When you are finished, ensure that all dials and switches are set to the OFF position.

Unplug heated appliances and tools (i.e., toasters, curling rods, flattening irons, heated mattress pads, etc.) while not in use.

Dispose of all trash in designated spaces.

Keep our community clean ensures sanitary spaces for all of our community members in addition to eliminating fire hazards. Please do not leave trash in hallways or walkways.

Consider retiring your worn out chargers and other accessories with severed or exposed wiring.

Make sure all light switches and other electrical devices are securely in the OFF position or setting when not in use.

Allowing devices to be stored in midway positions — like a light switch stuck between the ON and OFF position — pose fire hazards and could cause electrical damages, resulting in a fire.

Notify the Front Desk of any concerns or damages IMMEDIATELY.

The Lease Transfer Process: Tips to Help You!

There are various reasons that you may be interested in transferring your lease For example - Are you graduating? Studying abroad? Are you having challenges with your roommate? No matter the reason, the resident will continue to be financially responsible for their lease until a successful lease transfer occurs.

1) WHAT'S THE REASON?

It costs $150 to transfer your lease. Additional fees may apply if you transfer your lease prior to September 1. Departing residents will see this charge on their DU student account AFTER a completed lease transfer.

2) LEASE TRANSFERS COST MONEY.

The original lessee will finish their lease at the end of the month. The new lease will begin their new lease on the first of the month. This applies to all months, with the exception of summertime.

3) END DATE. START DATE.
