Editor’s Dear Readers,

Letter

The holiday season has finally arrived, bringing with it a wave of joy and festivities. It's a time cherished for various reasons - from the enchanting holiday attire and gatherings to the delightful seasonal cuisines and heartwarming movies. More than anything, this season is about weaving precious memories with our loved ones and basking in the magic that surrounds us. Reflecting on my own cherished memories, I recall the annual tradition of watching 'Miracle on 34th Street' with my grandmother. Through her eyes, I absorbed the enchantment of the holidays, creating enduring memories that still warm my heart. This season offers an array of delights, from vibrant holiday parades to the joyous celebrations adorned with delectable feasts. It's a time meant for savoring every moment, cherishing the experiences that knit us closer together. In the midst of the hustle and bustle, I implore you to pause and revel in each passing moment. Warm Regards, Erin Elise Enyinda Editor-in-Chief

Erin’s Picks: Winter List Spa Days: As the temperatures drop, self-care takes precedence on my list. Embracing the cooler months often involves indulging in spa days, treating myself to hydrotherapy soaks or invigorating body scrubs. It's a rejuvenating experience that leaves me feeling refreshed and pampered. Sequins and Sparkles: Nothing quite captures the spirit of the season like the shimmer of sequins and sparkles. Whether adorning an outfit or a cozy corner at home, they have the power to infuse cheer even on the dreariest days.

Celebrating Friends and Family: One of my favorite things to do in the summer is find all the live music events that I can and check them out. The excitement of a live show, along with the crowd participation, the warm air, summer fashion and food are an unequalled experience. 8

Ig user: How do I heal from the past and learn to love myself again after toxic relationships? This question strikes at the core of a journey many of us undertake in our everyday lives. When facing the aftermath of toxic relationships, it's natural to experience anger. However, it's imperative to resolve this emotion and release the situation from our hearts. My personal journey has involved delving deep into the parts of myself that permitted behaviors that devalued or failed to honor me as I honored others. Confronting our internal belief systems that allowed such outcomes is challenging. It's crucial to note that experiencing toxic relationships doesn’t

imply agreement on our part, but rather a need to explore why these situations or individuals held an attraction for us. Through this introspection, I've learned to acknowledge the parts of me that were fractured before these encounters and the aspects that suffered damage afterward. I turn to prayer, seeking God's help to release these burdens and to move forward peacefully. Healing from such wounds takes time, especially considering the extent of the damage. It's important to be gentle with ourselves if memories resurface. Lastly, my healing has come from immersing myself in God’s love. Understanding His love for me has led to a restoration of my ability to love myself more completely and profoundly. May you come to see yourself through the eyes of divine love and rekindle a passionate and profound love for yourself.

3 Reasons You

NEED A DOULA By Ki Newsome

So, you just found out you're pregnant. Congratulations! What's next? You might consider who will be included in your perinatal support team. Depending on your birth plans, you may need to interview a few midwives and obstetricians. And no matter where you plan to give birth (hospital, home, or birth center), you will certainly want to interview doulas! Birth doulas are non-medical support for people giving birth.

They provide emotional, informational, and physical support and advocacy from conception through postpartum. If you've considered hiring a birth and postpartum doula but aren't sure what value they would add to your birth team, I'd like to share three reasons why doulas are worth every penny.

1. The Statistics The number of people who die in childbirth every year has doubled in the last two decades. According to the most recent data reported by the Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH), Alabama ranks third in the country for the highest maternal mortality rate, with black women making up a disproportionate share. This is due to medical racism, the underuse of evidence-based care, social and economic disparities, and implicit bias. Most doulas are equipped with advocacy skills that can protect people giving birth in unsupportive environments. Doulas are often the bridge to comprehensive care for pregnant people. 2. The Evidence 33-45% of births result in some form of trauma. Hiring a doula can significantly impact your birth by making birth intentions more accessible. Many pregnant people desire two things from their labor: quick and pain-free. And they also have no idea what it takes to get there. Studies examining the impact of continuous support by doulas report significant reductions in cesarean births, instrumental vaginal births such as forceps and vacuums, the need for Pitocin augmentation, and shortened labor durations. Continuous support has also been associated with higher newborn Apgar scores, higher rates of breast and chestfeeding, and overall higher satisfaction with parents. These successes are largely attributed to doulas' companionship and educational support.

hands of midwives assisted by doulas or could tell you a story about someone they know who was. Many doulas today still honor the historical legacy of birth work in their practice. In conclusion, Doulas provide your family with the necessary support when growing your family. They build a bridge and foster a safe space for you to feel comfortable asking your healthcare provider questions and voicing your concerns so that you can become a confident decision-maker for you and your family.

3. The History I would be remiss if I didn't recognize the ancestral connection that exists with birth work and communities of color. Birth work is not a trend in black and brown communities. Before the 1930s, women typically gave birth at home surrounded by friends, family, and their midwife. Collectively, they were responsible for supporting the mother emotionally and physically through labor. These birth workers were healers and spiritual leaders serving in prominent positions in their community. Your aunt or grandmother was either born at the

TOP 5 TIPS TO

End Your Year Strong in Your Business By Courtney Willoughby

The end of the year is just around the corner, believe it or not! As a business owner you are either slowing down or ramping up depending on what your business is. Regardless of either answer, it is important to finish the year strong and not let the holidays burn you out or leave you in a slump. As you read, you’ll see that the keyword is plan. Make a plan to end your year STRONG!

1. Make a schedule. Not just for yourself, but for your marketing. From social media to newsletters, sales and coupons. You want to make sure everything is planned out on a calendar so you can be ahead of the game and not be rushing at the last minute to post or share. Take this as your sign to sit down and work out the last few months of the year and consider scheduling content through the first week or two of January so you have time to recover from the holidays. Hint: schedule your social media in Meta Business Suite so everything is automatic!

2. Batch your content. Now that you have a schedule, batch your content. Whether it is a photoshoot or graphics on canva, use your schedule as a guide and get your posts together and scheduled. That way when things come up, (as they always seem to do at the worst times) you are prepared and still showing up on social media and in front of your customers/clients.

3. Don’t forget your clients! If you haven’t already, now is a great time to plan some holiday cheer for your clients and loyal customers. Consider dropping off desserts or food, restaurant gift cards, coffee cups, tech gifts, or whatever you would like to give. My personal favorite is custom candles in holiday scents with our logo on the jar. Ask around for small business recommendations to fulfill these items so you not only will spread cheer to your clients, but also support a local business in the process.

4. Start writing down your goals for 2024. It is never too early to set goals for yourself. If you are seeing things you want to do differently during the holidays for next year, write that down and start brainstorming in January for how you can fix those issues for the next holiday season.

5. Make time during the holidays. While you are hustling during the holidays to meet demands, make sure to plan your own holiday experiences in between. The holidays can seem overwhelming to many but it’s important that YOU enjoy them as well. Remember what the holidays are about: loved ones, giving, and enjoying those that you love. Wishing all of you a wonderful holiday season full of love, joy, and success!

KEEP YOUR SKIN

HYDRATED THIS WINTER SEASON

By Samantha Ann

24

L I V E A F F I R M E D ● VO L 4

The ebbs and flows of the seasons are inevitable and give a beautiful variety to our environment, especially in Alabama, where one day can be 40° and the next 87°. One thing that is for sure is the dry skin that comes with the winter air. Just as we adjust our wardrobe for the change in seasons, your skincare routine should also include an adjustment to accommodate for the humid and dry months. Our skin is a fantastic organ that can draw moisture from the air and hold it in. With winter right around the corner, air will have less moisture in it, which affects how much moisture we have in our skin. The good news is some straightforward changes will help keep your skin hydrated this winter season. Here are my top 3 recommendations:

1. ADD A HYDRATOR TO YOUR SKINCARE ROUTINE. Most people use a moisturizer when they feel their skin is dry; however, your skin’s issue may actually be a “hydration” issue rather than a “dryness” issue. Moisturizers or lotions are used to prevent dryness in the skin, which is a lack of oil in the skin. Hydrators are used in order to avoid dehydration, which is a lack of water in the skin. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance found in your eyes, joints, and skin. A quarter teaspoon of hyaluronic acid holds about one and a half gallons of water, which is why it’s one of my favorite ingredients when it comes to hydration. BONUS! It’s also the main ingredient in facial fillers, which means it plumps the skin, providing anti-aging properties. Some of my top hydrating hyaluronic acid products are Face Reality Hydrabalance and Paula’s Choice Hyaluronic Acid Booster.

2. CHANGE YOUR MOISTURIZER. In addition to adding a hydrator to your daily skincare routine, changing your moisturizer can also be beneficial. Not only does a moisturizer balance the oils needed to lubricate the skin, but those oils also act as a sealant to seal in hydration and your other skin care products. Changing your moisturizer to cream during the winter is an easy way to aid in your skin’s hydration retention. A couple of my favorites are CETAPHIL Rich Hydrating Cream and Face Reality Cran-Peptide Cream. Expert tip: Apply a layer of Vaseline or Aquaphor to the last step of your nighttime routine or before exposure to the wintery elements.

3. SWITCH YOUR EXFOLIATING AGENT. When you hear exfoliating, you might think of a scrub to remove dead skin cells. For many, this is a great way to achieve a fresh, bright complexion; however, this form of mechanical exfoliation can be drying and irritating to some during the winter months. A great alternative is switching to a chemical exfoliant. My favorite for dry skin is a lactic acid exfoliant. Lactic acid is a unique AHA that removes dead skin cells, treats fine lines and wrinkles, fades dark marks, and hydrates the skin. Some of our clinical favorites are Face Reality Mandelic Serum and Theraderm Fruit Acid Exfoliant.

All I want for Christmas is… Making room for grief during the holidays By Kyla Glover

Holidays are a time for family gatherings, fun, storytelling, traditions and all the warm and fuzzies. It’s a time of year that we can look forward to. We create elaborate menus filled with fancy sides. We finalize our guest list with who’s coming and seating arrangements for the dinner table. It’s an exciting time. But, what happens when you have an unexpected guest show up that you had no plans of inviting. Bringing waves of feelings and emotions that you didn’t plan for. Grief. What do you do when grief is sitting at your table for the holidays? First, you acknowledge that grief is present. Grief is something we wish would just go away, but it doesn’t. Acting like it doesn’t exist doesn’t make it better…it makes it worse. The more you ignore it, the bigger it becomes. Soon grief will be the only guest sitting at your table. Leaving standing room only for everyone else because now it occupies every seat. Acknowledging grief means you lean into its presence. The acceptance of seeing grief can give you the gift of clarity, the beauty of peace, and a foundation of strength. Second, you intentionally make room for grief. Grief became a permanent part of who you are the moment you were introduced to it. You’ve carried grief with you since that day, so the holiday dinner table won’t be the exception. If you are going to be amongst family, plan for them to bring their own grief to dinner also. Therefore, intentionality will be vital. This means you make room for grief to sit at your table and you respect its presence. When grief begins to create its own space the atmosphere can become unstable, consuming, and suffocating.

26

L I V E A F F I R M E D ● VO L 4

Creating space for grief can shift the atmosphere making it freeing, accepting, and inclusive. Finally, give your grief a voice by allowing it to speak. This carves out time for grief to share. Giving it a chance to honor the difficult spaces, the memories, the lessons, and the growth. Yes, giving grief a voice can be painful and maybe you’ll cry a little or even a lot…both are okay. There’s still safety in grief. Giving grief a voice gives audible evidence of progression, strength, truth, courage, and the possibility of creating new traditions. Friend, the holiday season is about togetherness, laughter, love, intimacy, and bonding. By adding grief to your guest list you don’t negate those things. On the contrary, grief can be a catalyst for all of those things. You might even get to add healing to your list this season. Allow God to give you an opportunity to see griefs’ other side…its beautiful side. I pray that we get to experience grief differently this season-embracing it boldly and full of grace. I pray this season we get to see the beautiful side of grief. God Loves you and so do I!

How To Dress For Holiday

Office Parties By Breyana Weights

28

L I V E A F F I R M E D ● VO L 4

W

hether it’s your first time in corporate America or you have a long history in this space, one thing is certain… holiday office parties can be a pain

to dress for.

In fact, when it comes to any other party you have the luxury of reaching into your closet, picking out your favorite clothes, and heading out without too much thought. However, when it comes to dressing for a holiday office party, you need to be strategic about what you put on because it’s an extension of your career and you need to remain as professional as possible while showcasing a hint of your style/personality. To ensure that you’re dressed appropriately I suggest that you get as much information as possible on the dress code and venue. This information will let you know how professional you’ll need to dress and what type of pieces you’ll need to include in your outfit. For example, if the party is being held at the office the dress code will most likely be casual and relaxed. So you can wear items like a midi length sweater dress or a turtleneck with a midi skirt and cute boots. On the other hand, if the event is being held at a venue, then the dress code might call for more formality so you might want to layer that sweater dress with a blazer and closed toe flats or heels. If for some reason you feel like the dress code and venue is a little vague, then try figuring out who will be attending to give you a sense of which direction you should go in with your outfit.

Lastly, if you aren't the best with putting outfits together but your goal is to look flattering, then it’s best to stick with the following pieces: fit & flare dresses and skirts and wrap dresses and skirts (a huge plus if they fall at or below the knee!). These pieces look incredible on every body shape and are easy to find and purchase. Plus, they give you a more streamlined look which is extremely important if styling isn't your strong suit. In conclusion, when dressing for a holiday office party it’s important to strike a balance between an outfit that’s true to you yet suitable for the company. Although you should be attentive to the dress code, venue, and who will be attending, you should also have a bit of fun with your outfit and share a touch of your amazing personality.

Artist Spotlight

ROSSINA BOYER LA MAG: How did you get into your career as an artist? Rossina: I've had a strong passion for art from a young age, but I didn't fully embark on my journey as a professional artist until my early 30s. Transitioning into this career path, I discovered a deep connection to the creative process. As I dedicated more time to paint , I realized that art was my true calling. With the encouragement of my loved ones, the guidance of mentors, and the appreciation of those who appreciate my work, my artistic journey has been incredibly fulfilling. LA MAG: You are also an author of children’s books, tell us your inspiration behind that. Rossina: The inspiration behind my children's book originates from my own life experiences. It's based on a true story that unfolded when my family was in Peru, and my father had moved to the U.S. when I was very young. The book beautifully illustrates her journey of reuniting with her family after a prolonged separation, echoing the experiences of countless families worldwide. Beyond my personal story, this book symbolizes the stories of hope, love, and reunion that resonate with so many who have faced similar challenges.

LA MAG: What are your favorite parts of creating art and why? Rossina: The aspect of creating art that resonates most with me is the freedom to let go and craft something truly significant. Drawing inspiration from the world around me—whether it's nature, travel, or the tales of others— and then channeling that inspiration onto the canvas is immensely fulfilling. Conveying emotions through color and giving them life through distinct, original creations is the core of why I love creating art. LA MAG: We absolutely love your hand painted blazers, can you tell us more about that? Rossina: The story of the hand-painted blazers began when I stumbled upon a white blazer in my closet. With a newfound penchant for adding color to anything white, I decided to give it a vibrant makeover. Taking the blazer into my studio, I started infusing it with a spectrum of hues. To my pleasant surprise, the reception was beyond my expectations. The original handpainted blazers garnered attention, and to my delight, they sold successfully. The positive response from people has truly made me happy and encouraged about this creative venture.

Preparing

YOUR HOME

By Joyce Wagner

The holidays are the busiest times of the year. That's why it's always essential to plan. Here are some tips on preparing your home for the busy season ahead. Winter Proof Your Home Keep track of things like changing the ac/heater filter, checking your drainage, and smoke & carbon dioxide detector. These are just a few. You can google "winter-proof to-do lists" to guide you. This is not just for homeowners but also renters. Staying on top of these things will help prevent expensive accidents and keep your holiday spirits jolly.

Clean & Declutter Cleaning, decluttering, and organizing are not just for the spring. The season is changing, so everything changes to accommodate the weather. 1. Start by packing all the summer clothes and bringing out the fall & winter clothes. 2. Clean your oven, microwave, stove, and refrigerator. When the holidays come, the food follows. It's especially true if you are hosting this year. Doing this ahead of time will help alleviate the stress of hosting. These are appliances that are used frequently during the holidays.

3. Don't forget to dust, mop & vacuum. We spend more time inside during the winter. So, doing a deeper cleaning will also help the spread of germs. It will also help you have a clean slate to decorate your home by starting with a clean canvas. 4. Consider changing your lighting. Lighting can dramatically change the mood of an atmosphere. For a cozy feel, stick with warmer lighting and cool for a colder look. 5. Prepare the guest bedroom. Freshening up your guest bedroom will save you the frantic worry of being a good host. Check your pantry. The one thing we all hate is going to the grocery store and not finding that one ingredient. Avoid the long lines by stocking up early. Go through your pantry and see what is about to run out or is needed. This includes items like tupperware and aluminum foil. Having more than enough is better than running out at the last minute. Take Inventory of Your Old Holiday Decor Knowing what you have will help you see what you need if you plan to go shopping. Take down all your current decor that doesn't translate to your holiday decorations. As you look through your items, ask yourself these questions. Are these items still reusable? If not, do they need to be thrown out or revamped to fit your current style? Do I still love this style? If you are into D.I.Y's, then there are tons of D.I.Y ideas & tutorials depending on your creative skill set, budget, and time needed to change up those items. Figuring out what will work for you and your current situation is always best. Shopping New Decor Once you see what you are working with and decide you want to shop for new items. Ask yourself these questions before you leave the house. What is my budget? What style, color, or theme do I want to do this year? How much time do I have? Knowing your style, colors & a list before you leave the house will prevent you from overspending and will save you time. It will also help you nail the style you are going for. We offer holiday design services to help mediate your long to-do list during this time of the year. Give us a call to explore our packages.

3 WAYS TO WEAR A

STRIPED SWEATER By Tasha Nelson

Bold and iconic, the vertical stripe has been around long enough to be considered aristocratic to tacky, unflattering to posh. Now its 2023 and I think it’s to safe that vertical stripes are forever a classic. While I own many striped pieces one of the “go to” items in my personal wardrobe is the striped sweater. It’s easy to style and cozy to wear all year long. Honestly they are easy to find too ! If you’re a capsule wardrobe girly i bet you already own one! There are so many looks that can be built around the vertical e stripe sweater and we’re gonna focus on cold weather styling. Let’s go! Look One: Casual . When I think Casual immediately think Denim! To build this look I paired the striped sweater with a puffer vest, 90s inspired denim (cuffed because they are so long on me) a classic ball cap and my go too platform Uggs in mustard seed. A matching crossbody brings the neat raps together and the texture adds a cozy feeling to the look . I’d definitely live in this look for errands and everyday life. Look two: Elevated . Leggings… hear me out. Fleece lined leggings may not scream fancy but they are warm and once you add the designer inspired boots ( mine are from Target) , you’ve brought back in the chic allure we wanted. I generally would opp for a sweater the covers might bum and that’s why I chose this sweater. Shopping tip: If you haven’t added a striped sweater to your collection length and fit are things to consider. A longer piece can be cropped and length can be added to a cropped piece with a longer Oxford style underneath. Look 3: Feminine . Mini skirts scream fem to me although a longer satin skirt (if you’re a modest girly) would be equally gorgeous. Stockings for warmth are a must but look so chic. Now here’s where I get a little funky because I’m totally on the the Maryjane/saddle shoe train. I alive to see them worn with with leg warmers or slouchy socks . It’s adorable. Give me a chunky shoe and ruffle sock, I’ve gone to heaven. It’s an obsession. I topped this look with an oversized cropped Sherpa lined jacket for added warmth . Wide headbands and cool shades add that dash of preppy ski chic vibe. Whatever your personal style I believe everyone could use a vertical striped piece in their wardrobe. So many trends come and go but stripes are forever.

Exercise as a Lifeline By J’Que Ellis

Battling Depression with Physical Activity

D

epression casts a long shadow, affecting over 16.1 million American adults each year. If you find yourself in the grip of despair, remember that help is just a call away. Reach out to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255, or access their confidential chat service 24/7 on their website.

The power of exercise in alleviating depression cannot be overstated. Engaging in physical activity triggers the release of those feel-good hormones, bolsters self-esteem, eases tension, and even improves brain function. If the thought of push-ups and squats doesn't excite you, that's perfectly fine. Any activity that gets your blood pumping and muscles moving can be beneficial.

Setting realistic goals, such as working out for just 20 minutes, three times a week, is an excellent way to start. You don't need to go to a gym; you can work out from the comfort of your home. Here, we will explore the profound impact of exercise on mental health and offer five workouts to consider, even on those days when leaving your bed feels impossible.

2. Simple Resistance Workout: Work all major muscle groups with exercises like push-ups, squats, pullups, and deadlifts. Ten repetitions of each exercise with a rest in between, repeated up to four times, is an effective workout to build strength and boost your mood. Repeat this circuit up to four times. Push-ups, Squats, Crunches, Deadlifts.

The Power of Exercise in Battling Depression

3. The "Big 5" Workout: The Big 5 Workout is an effective way to build muscle without spending tons of time at the gym. This workout includes seated row, chest press, pull-down, overhead press, and leg press. Perform one set of each exercise to muscular failure to build muscle efficiently.

When dealing with depression, the simplest tasks can seem insurmountable. As mentioned, depression touches millions of lives in the United States every year. While therapy is a critical component of managing depression, exercise, too, plays a vital role in improving one's well-being. Exercise is more than just a means to shed pounds or build muscle; it supports brain health, hormonal balance, and self-esteem. Most importantly, it enhances mood, making it a crucial part of any selfcare regimen, whether one is battling depression or not. Studies have consistently shown that exercise effectively reduces symptoms of depression, anxiety, and panic disorders. Resistance training, for instance, has been proven to significantly decrease depressive symptoms among adults, regardless of the amount of weight lifted or strength gained. Exercise releases endorphins, those mood-enhancing hormones that offer a sense of well-being, relieve pain, and help with depression, while also increasing the availability of neurotransmitters associated with mood regulation. Exercise can even relax your body, reducing tension and anxiety.

Here Are 5 Mood-Boosting Workouts 1. Quickie Yoga Routine: Start your day right from bed or the couch with a gentle yoga routine. It's a perfect way to unwind, clear your mind, and promote happiness. You can find numerous yoga routines on YouTube to guide you.

4. Bodyweight Workout: For a high-intensity workout that's perfect for cardio and energy boosting, try 30 seconds of burpees followed by 30 seconds of walking in place, repeated 10 times. Burpees are a full-body workout that hits multiple muscle groups. 5. Full-Body HIIT Workout: High-intensity interval training (HIIT) workouts are excellent for elevating your energy and mood. Do each exercise for 60 seconds. In between each workout, walk in place for 30 seconds. Jog in place Squats Walk in place Push-ups Walk in place High jumps Walk in place Sit-ups Walk in place Burpees. Exercise is a powerful ally in the fight against depression, offering benefits that extend beyond the physical. Remember, even small steps matter, and setting achievable goals is crucial. Whether you engage in yoga from your bed, try a simple resistance workout, or opt for a more structured "Big 5" workout, the key is to get moving. Exercise can be your lifeline, helping you feel better and manage the symptoms of depression. And, if needed, don't hesitate to reach out to someone for support - you're not alone in this battle.

Navigating Life's Challenges with Positivity

MAKING THE HOLIDAY SEASON STRESS-FREE AND POSITIVE By Gloria Betts Caldwell

L

ife has a unique way of Oprah Winfrey-ing us, “You get a hard season, and You get a hard season!” Generously handing out seasons of financial hardships, emotional rollercoasters, heartbreaks, grief, and confusion. While it may seem unkind, we will inevitably face these challenges. The question then becomes, how do we remain positive when faced with a deluge of negativity and pain? I will give five tips to make the holiday season stress-free and positively memorable despite life's handouts. The first thing you can do is acquire a positive mindset. Finding the blue sky in every situation is critical to developing a positive attitude. Practice gratitude by focusing on the positives, even if you must squint your eyes to look for them. Understanding positivity is a choice; with practice, it becomes easier to navigate life's challenges. Indulge in Self-Care. During the holiday season, stress can become overwhelming. Find activities that bring you joy and help you relax. It could be as simple as walking in nature, practicing mindfulness or exercise, indulging in a favorite hobby, or even treating yourself to a pampering session. Making time for self-care will rejuvenate your spirit and help you maintain a positive outlook.

58

L I V E A F F I R M E D ● VO L 4

Lean in on Family and Friends. Remember, you don't have to face life's challenges alone. Reach out to loved ones, friends, or support groups when overwhelmed. Sharing your thoughts and emotions can provide comfort and a fresh perspective. Sometimes, a listening ear or a comforting hug can make all the difference. A professional one is a good option. Someone to help lighten the load. Always take the time to self-reflect. Every challenge we face provides an opportunity for growth. Take time to reflect on the lessons learned from these experiences. Instead of dwelling on negativity, focus on how you can grow, learn, and become a stronger individual. Embrace resilience and develop strategies to overcome similar challenges in the future. Remember, this is the holiday! The holiday season is a time for generosity, love, and kindness. Engage in acts of kindness, whether volunteering at a local charity or helping a neighbor. Acts of goodwill not only benefit others but also uplift your spirits. Surrounding yourself with the holiday spirit can remind you of the goodness that exists in the world and help you maintain a positive mindset. With its share of stress and challenges, the holiday season can be made stress-free and positively memorable with the right mindset and approach. Remember, challenges are temporary, and with resilience and a positive attitude, you can navigate them successfully, creating a holiday season filled with joy and positivity.

Spotlight interview with

LEJEUNE Ellena LeJeune - CEO & Founder, Head Fashion Designer at the Alabama Fashion Alliance

LA MAG: What inspired you to get into the world of fashion and design? LeJeune: My father’s sister, Aunt Eula, purchased my first metal mini sewing machine from Sears & Roebuck at the age of 12. She was and is, my style icon. I was drawn into the space of sewing & design by my best friend’s (Zenobia) mom, Lydia Aqueel, at the age of 13. She had an in-home seamstress business where she made mostly religious fashions for her Muslim church members. She gave me a crash course with her sewing machine, after asking me if I wanted to learn how to sew. After a 15-minute crash course, I was able to do a basic stitch, zig-zag stitch, zipper and button hole. I was a quick learner. I felt empowered. I had 8 siblings, so sewing gave me the power to create looks for myself, instead of always wearing hand-me-downs. Ms. Lydia went on to give me boxes of scrap fabrics, and I would create dresses, skirts and tops for myself. I eventually started sewing for my 5 sisters, classmates, and ladies in my neighborhood, around the age of 15 & 16. Zenobia and I made clothing together to rock our senior year of high school. We were true fashionistas. I would go on to make money selling fashions while in business college, and as a side gig while working in the corporate world. LA MAG: Tell us about the inspiration behind the AFA: LeJeune: I had such a great support system when I decided to create fashion on a larger scale. My parents, siblings, extended family and others were super excited about my journey. I would learn that not everyone received this type of support. I wanted to be the “cheerleader” of others who had similar dreams. Creating marketing platforms would be the beginning of providing other fashion creatives with visibility. In the 90s, while working in the corporate sector, I would launch Designers Against Breast Cancer. At the time,

Vergara Photography - Makeup - Enhanced Beauty by Tanya Harris

8-9 designers would join together to raise awareness and money for our local American Cancer Society, through an an annual fashion show that went on to raise a total of $11,000 over a 10 year period. The runway models included survivors too. Fast forward, launching the Alabama Fashion Alliance (AFA) was a great way to have an ongoing professional presence for the fashion industry in North Alabama, not just 1 charity event a year. Establishing events throughout the year, the Alliance has been able to serve 70 fashion designers and creatives from Alabama and across the US, serve over 50 sewing and design students, coaching of over 20 emerging and established fashion businesses, and various viable collaborations in our immediate and surrounding communities. Keep up with AFA on facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and www.alabamafashionalliance.com. LA MAG: What are you most proud of about the AFA?: LeJeune: I am most proud of being a part of making dreams a reality for so many fashion hopefuls and professionals. My hope is that God will continue to use me to bless others with the gifts He has trusted me with. I am also proud that people feel comfortable dropping by AFA and talking with me about not only business, but personal challenges that they may be facing. My prayer is always that I will have a word that contributes to their overall well-being and success. LA MAG: Tell us about the sewing classes that the AFA offers: LeJeune: The AFA Sewing Classes are a combination of learning basic sewing AND DESIGN skills. Students start off with the basis of learning the function of their machine, how to operate and use the features to complete their initial project. Instructors are generally practicing fashion designers or professional sewists.

L I V E A F F I R M E D ● VO L 4

61

For students who sign up for multiple sewing session, there learning will include basic body measurements, basic pattern making, hand sewing, and inspiration sketch sessions, that gets their creativity going, giving them an opportunity to bring one of their designs to life! Students can also showcase their creation at one of AFA’s fashion events, such as Fashion Week and/or Fashion Weekend Alabama. If a sewing student shows interest in pursuing an education or launching a business in the fashion design/styling areas, AFA can provide the resources to get them on the path to their career goals. Our sewing classes are a level up from traditional sewing classes, and industry focused. LA MAG: What advice do you have for up and coming designers? LeJeune: My advice would be to start your fashion journey early. Establish a support network, a few people in your corner who will always support you and pull for your success. Be kind. Ask God for his lead, discernment, and wisdom. Start researching credible and reputable fashion professionals, schools, and organizations in your area, and start connecting with them. Also, use social media to connect with national and international brands who may not mind sharing their knowledge with you. Follow their pages. Study what is working for them, how they move in the space of fashion design & business. Learn and educate yourself through related events, classes, and local networking. Establish your brand point of view and who you will be marketing to. Start creating and selling your own clothing samples, perfecting your craft, and gaining brand visibility using social media, websites, related platforms available in your area and other nearby cities. Remember, don’t be afraid to pay a little toward what you are trying to achieve, and the spaces you want your brand to be in. This is your future, invest in it. In the world of creativity, the sky is not the limit.

Spotlight interview with

B CHRISTINE INTERIORS La Mag: Tell us a bit about your journey. How did you get started in interior design? What was your inspiration? B. Christine: My love for interior design started very early in life while watching my father paint, build, and remodel homes for his contracting business. Years later, I would unearth my love for interior design and put it to practice in every house or apartment in which I lived. I remember calling my father in 2006/2007, asking him for $50; his reply was straight to the point. He said, “No, you will figure it out.” After that conversation, I did just that- I figured it out. After researching quick ways to make money, I learned to utilize eBay. I was amazed at how much money I could make by selling items in my home on this platform. I was hooked and would stick with eBay for a few years. I tried my hand at several Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) type businesses over the years, but they never fulfilled me. I understood that my purpose and life call were vital to any business I started. I attempted to become a life coach but didn’t fit in that arena. I then decided I wanted to be a career coach, helping people learn to dress for success. After dissolving that business, I decided to take a break from business formation for a while. In 2017, I was utterly disobedient to the voice of God and created a photography business when He told me to do something else. I held on to that business for five years because it allowed me to minister to people through photography. However, at the end of 2021, I felt a nudge from the Holy Spirit to dissolve the photography business. In March 2022, I excitedly closed the photography business and felt at peace. Earlier in 2021, I asked God to show me what to do next, and He reminded me of my love for interior design while my husband and I began building our new home. He brought to my remembrance all the times I redesigned my own spaces, assisted friends, family, and co-workers in getting their homes together over the years. He then reminded me how I helped customers pull their spaces

together while working at Kirkland’s part-time in 2011. In April 2022, I divorced fear, married faith, and gave birth to B. Christine & Co., LLC., while working full-time with the Federal Government. La Mag: What have you learned about yourself over the years as a designer? B. Christine: During my almost two years in the Interior Design Industry, I have learned much about myself and continue learning more daily. Some key things I have learned about myself are Adaptability, Business Acumen, Time Management, and Resilience. I have learned that being adaptable and flexible is vital as a designer, as clients will have varying styles, design aesthetics, and project-specific requirements. When running my business, I quickly learned that hiring other professionals is necessary. I am much more efficient with the expertise of my accountant/ bookkeeper, architectural graphic designers, receiving warehouse personnel, and recently hired installation day team. I also utilize client management software that helps me stay on task with multiple projects. Time Management is one area that is critical in my business. As an entrepreneur who still works full-time, I have to manage my time precisely. I live by a calendar and several alarms set throughout the day. It is not easy juggling my full-time career and business, but God has graced me during this season to manage all the responsibilities on my plate. As with any business venture I have undertaken, resilience was necessary. I adopted what my mentor terms as a "Bulletproof Mindset." This mindset comes from my determination to overcome any adversity that attempts to hinder me from attaining my desired goal. Often, that adversity was self-inflicted due to limiting beliefs. Nevertheless, I always overcame every external and internal barrier set before me. If I had to choose one lesson that has greatly benefited

me, it would be resilience. I am no stranger to tough times; however, cultivating strength and persistence in the face of challenges has allowed me to grow personally and professionally. Operating from a resilient mindset, coupled with the favor of God, has allowed several doors to open for me. La Mag: Give us a brief rundown of what your creative process is like: B. Christine: I would say these are the top things involving my creative process: 1. Understanding Client Needs: The process begins with understanding the Client's requirements, preferences, and the purpose of the space. It involves discussing the Client's vision, functional needs, style preferences, and desired investment. 2. Research and Inspiration Gathering: I often gather inspiration from various sources such as magazines, websites, art, architecture, and even nature. This helps me to develop a vision and identify trends, styles, and elements that might resonate with the Client's desires. 3. Concept Development and Planning: Once I gather the initial inspiration, I develop a concept or theme for the space. This includes creating mood boards/concept boards, sketches, or initial digital renderings to communicate the design direction visually. Detailed planning involves space layout, color schemes, materials, and specific design elements. 4. Selection of Materials and Furnishings: This stage involves sourcing and selecting materials, furniture, fabrics, lighting, and accessories that align with the design concept. 5. Creating Design Proposals and Presentations: After finalizing the design concept and selection of materials, I present the proposals to the

66

L I V E A F F I R M E D ● VO L 4

Client. This may involve 3D models, mood boards, sample materials, and detailed plans to help the Client visualize the result. 6. Refinement and Revision: Based on client feedback, I will refine the design and make necessary adjustments and revisions to ensure it aligns with the Client's expectations and requirements. 7. Implementation and Project Management: I oversee the implementation phase once the design is approved. This involves working with contractors, vendors, and artisans to ensure the design execution goes as planned. Project management involves coordinating timelines, budgets, and installations. 8. Final Touches and Styling: This stage involves adding the final decorative elements, accessories, and styling to the space. It's the moment when the vision comes to life, and the area transforms into a functional, aesthetically pleasing environment. 9. Client Handover and Follow-up: After completion, I ensure the Client is satisfied with the outcome. This phase may involve making final adjustments and providing guidance on maintenance and care for the designed space. La Mag: what has been your most rewarding or inspiring experience so far in your career? B. Christine: Every project I have worked on has been rewarding as it reflects how God honored my faith in Him. The Bible says in James 2:17 NIV, "In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead." Divorcing Fear and marrying Faith was the best decision I ever made. However, I will say that my most rewarding experiences so far in my career have been working with celebrity clients and booking an international design project for a residential new build La Mag: Please share one fun fact about yourself: B. Christine: There are many fun facts that I would like to share, but since I can only share one, I will share that I know and can repeat the Alphabet backward and can repeat it quickly. La Mag: How can our readers stay connected with you! B. Christine: For all Interior Design service inquiries please visit You may also connect with B. o you truly feel in charge of your health? In a world where medical practitioners and pharmaceuticals play a significant role in our well-being, the notion of being in control of our own health can sometimes seem elusive. However, being in charge of your health means more than just relying on doctors and medications. It involves feeling empowered to handle health issues when they arise and cultivating healthy habits that nurture

both your physical and mental well-being. This journey is ever-evolving, and I want to share some advice that can help you along the way. In recent years, there has been a noticeable shift in the way we perceive our health. People are recognizing that being proactive and taking charge of their health is essential. It's not about rejecting the expertise of medical professionals but rather about embracing the concept of personal responsibility for one's well-being. One of the key indicators of being in charge of your health is reducing dependency on medications. While medication can be essential and even life-saving in some cases, the goal should be to minimize reliance on it whenever possible. Developing a holistic approach to health that encompasses proper nutrition, exercise, and stress management can significantly reduce the need for prescription drugs. Being in charge of your health means you feel equipped to handle health issues as they arise. This doesn't mean you become a medical expert overnight but rather that you have the confidence and knowledge to make informed decisions about your health. This empowerment can be achieved through education, understanding your body, and establishing a strong support network. Healthy habits are the cornerstone of well-being. From eating a balanced diet to maintaining a regular exercise routine, these habits are essential for physical health. Additionally, nurturing your mental health through practices like mindfulness, meditation, and stress reduction techniques is equally vital. When you prioritize these habits, you are actively taking charge of your health. The journey of taking charge of your health is an ongoing process. It's not about perfection but about progress. It's a transformation that occurs over time as you learn more about yourself, your body, and the choices that contribute to your well-being. Embracing this journey can be both empowering and liberating. Feeling in charge of your health is an empowering and transformative experience. It means moving beyond dependence on doctors and medication and becoming an active participant in your well-being. The journey may have its ups and downs, but the rewards of improved health, well-being, and a higher quality of life are well worth it. Embrace this journey and seize the opportunity to take charge of your health – your future self will thank you for it.

he stages of marriage can change like the four seasons. Traditional Christian marriage vows reflect, “for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health.” When standing starry eyed at the altar reciting our vows we fail to realize how those words are as contrasting as a cold front in a summer month. Unfortunately, there is no marriage meteorologist to warn you when a severe storm is headed your way. As my husband and I approach our 24th wedding anniversary, I can’t help but reflect on the many seasons of marriage we’ve walked through and the countless storms we’ve weathered.

Spring During our honeymoon phase most days life felt new, fresh, fun and exciting. I was happy to finally be a wife and experience guilt-free intimacy. Being a newly saved newly wed was like coming out of hibernation. Our relationship blossomed both spiritually and physically as we began to learn how to get along and grow together as husband and wife. But our Spring phase presented its fair share of storms. Letting go of your family and embracing in-laws as family can produce its own set of growth pains and thunderstorms.

Summer Things heated up pretty quickly once our family grew. Summer days were longer but they went by fast, much like the maturation process of raising children. We set out to raise our kids, but found ourselves amazed by your own exponential growth as a couple. Summer is a time for memory making and adventure. Take lots of photos because you can relive those moments during times of drought.

Fall Every couple goes through a phase in which life cools down, days get shorter, and the family dynamic starts to shift. Kids may grow up and leave home or perhaps, not leave when you anticipated they’d be gone. It can be a time in which you restructure life through rest and transformation or find ways of coping with unexpected grief. Health challenges and financial changes can also lead you to love and cherish or be the “death do us part.”

arly in my marriage, when my husband shared his dreams, I couldn’t understand how we could go from where we were to where he envisioned. It wasn’t that I didn’t believe in him. I just felt powerless to make his dreams come true. Over time, I learned that making his dreams come true wasn’t my job. That’s God’s job. (Trigger warning: I’m about to use a word many consider harmful.) My role as a wife is to walk in submission. If you look up the word "submit,” you will find anything from “to serve,” as in serving a meal, to a military term that implies “to surrender,” as in battle. For the sake of this article not turning into a word study, let’s say submission means “to defer to someone out of respect by lifting and supporting them with your gifts." Even though I couldn’t always see the big picture, offering support hasn’t been complex. He is wise, loves God, and consistently seeks to do what's best for our family. When he invites me to embark upon something new, I trust that things will work together for our good. For the same reasons that it wasn’t easy for me to support him, it hasn’t always been as easy for him to support me. His natural aversion to risks makes him resistant to change. But just because he has been reluctant sometimes doesn’t mean my dreams were any less important. Now that we’ve discussed how supporting each other’s dreams has been crucial in maintaining the health of my marriage let's delve into some practical ways you can do so in yours. Here are some points to consider. Sounding board- Be a safe place for your spouse to share. One key to actualizing a goal is to keep it before your eyes. Having someone listen to your ideas is fertile ground for your dream to grow. Undergird and uplift. When fears arise, keeping a level head and an open heart are invaluable assets to your spouse. Prayer decreases stress and makes a difference in the overall health of your marriage.

Winter When you’ve weathered many storms you’ve reached the mature phase of marriage. Hopefully by this point you’ve learned a great deal about how to accept each other’s weaknesses and appreciate one another’s strengths. What I value most about winter is how the things that had a negative stigma in previous seasons now bring you honor. If you felt shame in your youth for having children young, you likely now feel proud to be energetic enough to enjoy your children and grandchildren. If you experienced lack early along your journey, you have likely acquired skills that have led to a newfound financial freedom. If you’ve walked through marital mishaps and overcome major misunderstandings, you are probably a shelter for couples experiencing inclement weather. Each season of marriage is significant and presents its own set of joys and challenges. If you are currently in a Spring or Summer season, savor every second, because Fall will surely come. And when the winds of change blow I pray that you and your spouse will find a way to have and to hold each other in the midst of life’s cold until death do you part. M EN TAL H EALTH MAINTAINANC E DURING

FALL & WINTER

By Portia Hines

As the leaves change color, the air turns crisp and the days grow shorter, some of us are celebrating the return of pumpkin spices while others of us find ourselves struggling with fluctuations in emotions, mood and overall well-being. Negative shifts in mood and energy during what we expect to be a festive time of year can be both discouraging and alarming. The visual cues that we see during fall and winter are nature's way of signaling to us that we should manage our energy, resources and behavior differently during this time of year. During the fall and winter months North American experiences shorter days which results in less opportunities for direct sunlight. Our bodies actually require sunlight to produce and properly use Serotonin and Vitamin D which both are major ingredients in the good mental health cocktail. One way to improve your mood and keep your energy levels up is to review your schedule and look for opportunities to get some direct sunshine. And if you live in an area where sunshine is ultra limited consider getting a light box which is a device that mimics natural sunlight. Longer nights and colder temperatures encourage an increase of indoor activities. And while we all love a good holiday party, sometimes the added pressure of attending event after event, preparing a dish for the potluck, baking cookies for the bake sale and endless sports gatherings can add strain to our already busy schedules. Also, societal pressures to feel joyful and festive can further exacerbate underlying feelings of isolation or inadequacy for those already struggling emotionally. Setting healthy boundaries and giving yourself permission to decline requests without

feeling guilty can help support your mental health. Remembering that your energy is a resource that must be protected and refilled frequently will allow you to prioritize a sense of balance that works for you as an individual. While fall and winter mean an increase of activity and socialization for some, for others it’s an isolating time of year. Prolonged isolation can increase risk for feelings of depression, anxiety and negatively affect other areas of cognitive functioning. Although you may not be able to physically get out to interact thankfully with the technological advances we now have at our fingertips it is possible to still experience connection. Whether it's a virtual chat with a friend, joining a support group, or spending quality time with family over the phone, staying socially connected can provide emotional support and reduce feelings of isolation. Most importantly please remember that there is no shame in seeking support! By synchronizing our wellness strategies to the natural rhythms of seasonal change, we can harness nature's wisdom and create good mental health for ourselves. In many cultures the colder months are looked at as a time of reflection, restoration and replenishment. In alignment with these beliefs, fall and winter are the perfect time to prioritize self-care. Reflect on all you’ve accomplished so far this year, become your own cheerleader! Restore the essential vitamins and nutrients that your body needs to stay healthy by eating foods that are fresh and in season to your local area. And replenish, by creating the space and time to give yourself what you need for continued self-care throughout the season.

STRONG CONFIDENCE

By April Boddie

I don't know how many people have experienced a pit as deep as the one I will describe. Still, if you have, I applaud you for faithfully and courageously climbing out of that pit, and if you are currently in this pit, I pray that my words rise down in there with you today and that you don't feel alone. I pray for your complete healing, joy, and confidence. About 18 months ago, I pulled into my garage, and tears began to fall again as it started to close. See, I had cried for six months consecutively every day in every room of my house, on the route to and from my home and at my job. I was sad, I was hurt, I was in a pit, and I had no confidence.

That day, when I walked into my house, it was time to move on because it was no longer a home. It was time to decide, and I chose myself and my daughter. In October 2021, I suddenly became single at the age of 47. I was broke and broken, alone and lonely and utterly lost. I felt cheated because I had been cheated on. I had been broken down into the tiniest version of myself I'd ever seen as an adult. As the wounded, self-conscious version of me I had never seen before, I did not know where to turn or what to do. I grieved and cried but knew God had plans for me: to prosper, not harm, and give me a future and hope. I knew I needed to stand flatfooted in my faith and make life changes. So… in November, I did; I began the journey that has changed my life. and bestowed my faith and confidence in life in love with God and me. I My friend Lisa sweetly encouraged me to work out with her in the mornings to improve my days, so I took her up on her offer. She had been doing an app for about a year, which was very good for her physically, mentally, and emotionally. She looked great, and every time I saw her, she had a smile on her face. The journey started twice a week, then moved to three times a week, then four times a week; now, most weeks, we work out five days a week. Over those months that I was working out, it gave me a reason to get up in the morning at the ungodly hour of 4:30 am. It helped me find my footing and balance. It showed me I could be consistent, committed, and do hard things. The heavier the weights got, the stronger I felt, not only to lift them but to take another step, live another day, and breathe in and out

for another minute. All these things were tough, but I regained my confidence as I started seeing changes— confidence in myself, my abilities, and in how I looked. As a woman, when someone cheats on you, you feel something is wrong with you. Being betrayed gave me so much shame, but I now realize that shame is what you think when someone does something to you. The truth covered me from the bottom of my feet to the top of my head, and I began to accept it.

disappointed in my covering, and I am disappointed in my sister. The emotion that I feel towards myself is excitement. I'm excited about all God has planned for me, and not only that, but I’m also confident that whatever comes next, I will be prepared for. I'm convinced that whoever comes next will choose them, and I'm confident that wherever I go, God is already there. I cannot take credit for this feeling in my heart and this confidence that I now walk with,

But God! As I started to see changes in my physique, I also felt changes in my mind and heart. I no longer feel like something is wrong because I was betrayed. I know that I am fearfully and wonderfully melanatedly made, and it’s wrong with my betrayer to even chance losing someone as precious as me. I began to give myself full permission to see myself as broken, and this is where the healing started. The beauty of God's creation in me, both externally and internally, with each squat, push-up, and triceps dip little by little; my confidence gradually returned. I stand here today not fully confident in who I am, but I can tell you I'm 87% there. I wake up daily, look in my mirror, and say, “You are worthy of pursuit.”

It’s God’s strength has been made perfect through my weaknesses. Finally, acknowledging my weaknesses has been chain-breaking. I saw crying as a weakness for many years, and I didn't want to show people my tears. However, through this season, I can see how wrong I have been with this mindset. I see why God collects our tears, because they are precious and strong. If you get yourselves in a pit, whether you dig it yourself or a man dug it, I want you to know that I sit beside you in the dirt. I offer you empathy from the bottom of my heart. I will pray that you get out of that pit without getting dirty, and if you do, may the blood erase every stain. I pray that you find forgiveness for yourself, that you find your feet and find your way. Most of all, I pray that you find the most healed, confident version of yourself you have ever seen.

I am in this beautiful place of healing and peace without resentment for anyone. I know people walk away from relationships where infidelity exists with hate and strife, but I praise God that I have neither. I am not mad at anyone, and I pray for everyone. I can identify the emotion that I feel as a disappointment. I am

You are loved. I see you, and so does the Universe’s Creator. Earthy Auntie
