Summer. A season full of amazing fun in the sun. Growing up one of my favorite things to do as a California girl was sunbathe and drink my grandmother’s tea that she made on the back porch. She would pair it with whatever fruit you desired and a sandwich and voila! a summer meal was created. The serenity of summer was often found in the smell of when the water from the hose hit the concrete and my sister and I would play outside for hours. As I got older summer became about what me and my friends were doing at the park or the community pool. Now as an adult it is the time that I travel or socialize the most. I look forward to each and every outdoor activity, though my preference is activities in the early morning or evening due to the heat. One thing is for certain, the nostalgia of summer will never end, there will always be a memorable event or celebration to attend that becomes the staple of the season. Farewell summer. We enjoyed you and we look forward to when we meet again.

Erin’s Picks: Summer List Bright lip: One of my favorite things to do in the summer is change my nails and lips to match the warm weather. My favorite shade in warmer months is a coral color. I feel like it works well with my skin tone and I love the pop it gives me, especially while rocking my curls. Oversized pants: I love the silhouette that a body suit or cropped tank gives when paired with oversized pants. This is my summer uniform and I always feel so chic and relaxed. It gets hot in N. Alabama so this is a must for me!

Live Music: One of my favorite things to do in the summer is find all the live music events that I can and check them out. The excitement of a live show, along with the crowd participation, the warm air, summer fashion and food are an unequalled experience.

Ig user: What was it like to shift from print modeling to runway modeling? Erin: I have an article on this in this edition, but I would love to answer this from a different place. You have a level of vulnerability in runway modeling that you don’t have in print modeling because you don’t get to have the moment back on the runway. Whatever you give on the runway is what you give. For print, a photo can always be re-

taken, or you can shift your body or your pose if you don’t like how it looks. It took me a few years to build my confidence with print, and I believe that runway is the same way; the more you practice, the more you perfect what you want to exude. As with all things pertaining to self-image, it’s easy to be hard on yourself, but I think it’s imperative also to be proud of yourself for putting yourself out there in that way and showing up in a new and different way.

How to Achieve Fabulous Curls: A Guide for

Curly Hair Divas by Crystal Henry

C

urly hair can be challenging to manage and style, with its unique quirks, from frizz to unruliness. But fear not. You can transform your curls into a stunning mane that will turn heads with a little effort. In this article, we'll reveal some secrets to help you achieve those fabulous curls you've always dreamed of. So gather your favorite products, trusty hands, and a few clips, and prepare to create a true masterpiece with your hair. Let's start with the basics, or what we like to call "Fabology"! The right products are crucial when it comes to styling your curls. Avoid harsh chemicals like sulfates, parabens, and alcohol, as they can dry out and damage your hair. To remove any oils and buildup, begin with a clean slate using a clarifying shampoo, such as Fabology 101. Water is the foundation of moisture, so it is essential to eliminate barriers preventing your hair from absorbing it. Follow up with a moisturizing shampoo, like Fabology 201, or a curl-enhancing shampoo that provides hydration, nourishment, and frizz control. Don't forget to apply conditioner to your soaking wet hair, emphasizing the hydration of your curls, and use your hands to detangle gently. Your fingers are the best comb nature has provided for styling. The conditioning phase is where your curls genuinely come to life. Combining water and conditioner and using your God-given comb will make your curls shine if you have a curl pattern. Say goodbye to frizz by smoothing your hair with your hands. Whether you prefer ribboning, praying hands, or shingling techniques, ensure you eliminate all frizz during this step. Keep in mind that it may take some time to perfect this technique. Rinse for about 20 seconds, paying attention to your scalp. Stick to them once you find the best products; consistency is critical to your hair. Afterwards, gently squeeze the excess water using a microfiber towel or a t-shirt. Set your part and allow your hair to air dry, sit under a dryer, or use a diffuser attachment on low heat. Remember, scrunching can shrink your hair, so hovering around your curls will help them stay elongated. Avoid touching your hair until it's scorched to prevent frizz.

16

L I V E A F F I R M E D ● VO L 3

To prevent frizz while you sleep, protect your hair by pulling your curls into a pineapple and using a silk or satin pillowcase. These materials are gentle on your curls, reducing tangles, knots, and breakage. You can also consider using a silk or satin hair cap to preserve your hair's style and moisture content overnight. To keep your curls looking fabulous between washes, refresh them with a spray bottle filled with water and a few drops of your favorite leave-in conditioner or curlrefreshing spray. Concentrate on defrizzing any sections that look out of place. Allow your hair to dry using your preferred method. This process will bring back the bounce and reduce frizz, extending the life of your curls for a few more days. Pro Tip Avoid brushing your hair when dry, as it can lead to breakage and frizz. Instead, use your fingers to gently detangle your hair, starting from the ends and working your way up. This will prevent tangles and knots while reducing breakage. For additional detangling, you can use a leave-in conditioner or detangling spray. Now, let's talk about applying your styling products correctly. The most crucial steps involve saturating your hair with water and then emulsifying your preferred product, whether mousse, gel, or a curl-building serum. Make sure to distribute the product evenly, glazing it over the front, back, and center. Achieving fabulous curls is all about finding the right products, mastering the proper techniques, and protecting your hair while you sleep. You don't have to be a professional hairstylist to achieve beautiful curls. With a little effort and consistency, you can transform your curls into a gorgeous mane that will make everyone envy you. So follow our tips and enjoy your fabulous curls!

A REFRAMED PERSPECTIVE DEAF GAIN IN THE MODERN DAY

By Jess Hissam Growing up as a d/Deaf child, I often asked the question, “Why was I created to be d/Deaf?” If you have hearing loss/Deafness, the hearing world associates your hearing loss with a negative human experience. This limits our abilities & our identities of who we could be. Not only did I grow up as a d/Deaf child, but because I used cochlear implants to access my world, I was rejected by some people of my Deaf culture and taught I couldn’t “fully” be a part of the Deaf community due to my cochlear implants and thus could not have a Deaf identity. This journey led to wrestling with myself internally and my Creator as I questioned what I had gained from being d/Deaf. As an adult today, I now understand my why – my Deafness gives me a reframed perspective on life, a term I call “Deaf Gain.” In our d/Deaf culture, “Deaf Gain” refers to the reframing of our Deafness as a “form of sensory and cognitive diversity that has the POTENTIAL to contribute to the greater good of humanity.” (Baumann & Murray, 2009). This term is typically reserved for Deaf people whose primary language is a signed language, and they may likely not wear hearing assistive technologies. Today, our Deaf culture is diverse and rich, full of beautiful & resilient stories of d/Deaf people as we come together to celebrate our Deafness, which we view as Deaf Gain. A few things that Deaf Gain has taught me: • To slow down, be still, and observe the beauty around me – I rely on my vision to see what is happening around me. How often do we forget to look around at the masterpiece He created? • I look at my friend in the eyes when she is talking to me, as I depend on visual cues and her lips for conversational clarity & comprehension, and in return, make my friend feel seen & loved because I pay attention to her. • I can take my cochlear implants off and enjoy my Deafness as I journal my prayers, effectively eliminating distractions. This act of stopping and fully dwelling in His presence in the manner He created me to be is a blessing, not a curse.

Deaf Gain gives me a reframed perspective that my hearing loss is not a weakness. My Deafness is a beautiful part of me that God created. I am proud to be d/Deaf, even as a cochlear implant user. I am grateful for the opportunities I have to share the story He wrote, empower others, and look ahead with joy for what is to come. Deaf Gain brings riches into my life through community & connection. It can leave an impactful difference on all of society when we shift to reframe Deafness as having a positive impact on society in our everyday lives. Deaf Gain impacts not only d/Deaf people but abled & hearing people as they recognize the joys & potential of Deafness to impact the community for the better meaningfully. Whether it's observation of the world around us, improving conversation & body language, accessible technologies, and so on, Deaf Gain positively impacts our lives. How does Deaf Gain reframe your perspective today?

THE IMPORTANCE OF SKINCARE By Tabitha Hunter

The importance of having a good skincare routine is not only going through the cleansing, the serums, and the moisturizing process every night before bed. Even though that is a great habit to have, it’s much more than having a fresh feel on your face. Have you ever thought about the foods that you put into your body? Are you drinking enough water? What about the medications? All of these can significantly affect the outcome of your skin and how it reacts. It is even affected by what your body is going through. Your all-around health determines how your skin reacts to certain products. Hormones! Hormones are a sig-

26

L I V E A F F I R M E D ● VO L 3

nificant factor in your skin and what you're dealing with. Not always, but it can be, and people don’t even realize it. I went through so much hormone imbalance in my teenage years. For starters I was diagnosed with endometriosis at the age of 12, I’ve gone through the pain of a miscarriage, and I’ve also dealt with being anemic. During all of those physical changes I used a skin routine, and as soon as my body shifted, I had to figure out why and fix it. The truth is bodies change, and so does your skin!

So if you are finding that your body has changed or that your skin isn’t responding to products the way it used to you are not alone, girlfriend! If you think that your skin issues are because you don’t have much of a routine, it could be the case, but there could also be other factors to consider. I want to be the person you come to talk deeper into the causes of acne and dehydration, figure out the why and how, and find the right product for you along with a healthy lifestyle for your skin to feel radiant! A little about Behind My Skin Journey: I had to have a skincare routine at a very young age. With my skin type being sensitive and fair, I was prone to breaking out with makeup or products that touched my face. You name it, I broke out. It was hard to constantly find products that fit me and my skin the best. I tried hundreds of liquid foundations, powders, cleansers, etc., before finally getting a few that worked with my skin type. Going through all the time, research, and stress of finding that one perfect product can be overwhelming. Have you ever gone into a large cosmetic store full of skin care products and thought, “I don’t even know where to begin” or “Can someone just help by telling me what to buy?” I have had the same thoughts and wanted the same thing as you. I just wanted to sit down with someone and for them to tell me what my skin needs were and the products to look for. Being a busy mama to a toddler myself, here are a four things things I have added into my skin care routine that have made a world of difference., and I hope by implementing these things you can create a fun and easy skincare routine Get these products at your local Ulta or online! ● Wash with a cleanser - (in the shower to save some time) I use the, Tula Milk Cleanser. ● Toner Spray - I use of course the, Tula purifying Toner face mist. This is to soothes, tones, and hydrates skin ● Moisturizer - I use two different kinds, Tula 24/7 day and night moisturizer, and/ or L’Oréal Collagen moisturizer, both are amazing! ● A bonus product that’s great for on the go for us tired mama’s is, Tulas, hydrating

Fashion Tips & Tricks by Chondra Craig

ften, we have clothing that doesn’t quite fit like we want it to. These clothes can fit a lot better with alterations, but what if what we spent on them cost less than it would to get them altered? Also, what if everything isn’t alterationworthy? This is when we dust off our shoulders and pull out our fashion tips and tricks. A couple of hacks I think are simple and super easy involve a hair tie. Listen, I know what you’re thinking, “ hair ties are for hair.” “How will a hair tie help my clothes fit better.” Trust me, sis, you’ll want to try these. The best part about these hacks is that you likely already own a hair tie! Okay ladies, how many of us have experienced a dress fitting almost, but not quite perfectly? Knowing you love the dress can be frustrating, but it’s missing something. Here is one thing you can do to combat this: all you need is your handy hair tie and a bangle bracelet if you’re feeling fancy. Put your dress on. Find your focal area where you’d like the dress to fit better. Once you’ve found the area, tie your hair tie on the INSIDE of your dress. Readjust your dress, and you should have a perfect fit! Now, if you’re feeling fancy and want to use a bangle, you’ll place the bangle in the area you want to fit better. Then you’ll take your hair tie and tie it around the bangle wrapped in the dress and readjust.

This hair tie hack is for my ladies who love a blazer! Sometimes, blazer sleeves can be too long or get in the way, so we want to roll them up. Rolling them up works, but they slide down if not secured. One way to get those sleeves out of the way is to ruche your sleeves with a hair tie! Grab your hair tie, a fresh one that’s not stretched out, and put it on your sleeve 2 inches above your wrist. Slide the sleeve up to your desired length, and you have a perfect ruched sleeve that is nice and secure! Not only is this hack functional, but it’s also very stylish. When it comes to jeans, have you ever found yourself in between sizes, pregnant, bloated, or even accidentally shrank your pants? We all have been at least one or the other. With jeans being as expensive as they are, here’s a little hack to help prolong the wear of your favorite jeans. You’ll want to grab your hair tie, one closet to the color of your jeans, preferably. Take your hair tie and loop it around your button. Next, thread the hair tie through the button. Hole after you’ve got it threaded through the buttonhole, loop, and secure the elastic over the button. This will give you an extra inch if you are between sizes, pregnant, or bloated. Who knew one little hair tie could make all the difference in how we wear our clothes?!

I see my

Roses Blooming by Camil Williams

I

recently dropped my boys off at their dad’s house, and to my surprise, I saw my roses blooming. The roses I planted with my own hands. The roses I spent quality time with my mother-in-law, who showed me how to care for them. The roses I had every single intention of nurturing and having in the yard where I have special conversations with my sons. I laughed to myself, said my goodbyes to everyone and held it together long enough to drive off and completely break down.

Grief. Mourning. Divorce. New beginnings. Emotions all have a very tricky way of sneaking up on you when you least expect it, reminding you that the trajectory of your life has changed. Change is ok and I am OK. In fact, I’ve started slowly embracing the new season of being a single woman AND a mother. These are 5 things that helped me during this significant life transition. 1. Acknowledging the Emotional Rollercoaster of my feelings When emotions come, I allow myself to have them. Whether it’s anger, sadness, joy, or relief. I embrace my feelings because I’m human, not superhuman. I give myself that space. Sometimes, if I feel like sharing, I will talk to people who I consider “SAFE.” I think it’s essential to identify your safe spaces no matter the season you are in and be okay with understanding that those safe spaces can change.

2. Embracing Single Motherhood

3. Healthy Co-Parenting Relationship

● Redefining my identity: shifting from being part of a couple to embracing single motherhood.

4: Empowering Myself

Exploring personal interests, hobbies, and passions: rediscovering my individuality. Pursuing educational or career goals to enhance my independence. Joining support groups or seeking therapy to find empowerment and build a strong support network. Embracing the Future Recognizing that divorce is not the end but rather a fresh beginning. Embracing the possibilities ahead and creating a vision for my future. Cultivating resilience hope, and embracing the joys of single motherhood while co-parenting. Divorce is undoubtedly a challenging life event. However, it also presents an opportunity for personal growth, self-discovery, and embracing the upcoming season of single motherhood. I think that just like myself other women can thrive in their new roles by acknowledging and working through the emotional journey, creating a healthy co-parenting relationship, and empowering ourselves. Embracing the future with resilience, hope, and self-belief, single mothers can navigate this new chapter in their lives with strength and grace, inspiring others along the way. Faith, Trust, and Moving

Beyond our Comfort Zone By: Ashley Jones

Have you ever felt stuck? Have you ever felt like there was more out there beyond where you are? Have you ever felt like you were too old to start over, move forward or have a new dream? This was me a few years ago. I was “stuck” in a job that was no longer fulfilling to me in any capacity. One day while looking over some of my old journals, I realized I had been writing about the same issues at my job and venting about the same things for almost 10 years. It was at that moment I realized I could no longer allow myself to stay complacent and unhappy. I started off by going to a job fair to get my feet wet so to speak and to see what opportunities were out there. I had been at my previous place of employment for 14 years so making the decision to look for a new job was a major deal for me as well as culture shock. As I began to search for a new place of employment, I immediately began to feel overwhelmed and under qualified. I had not yet finished my bachelor's degree and wasn’t sure if or when I was going to return to school. After completing a few more online applications, I received a phone call to interview for one of the positions I had applied for. I was excited, nervous, and scared at the same time. I got the job! I submitted my two weeks’ notice and then I found out I was pregnant. My husband told me I should ask for my old job back and rescind my resignation. But I knew God had something better for me. I knew the prayers and wishes I had written in my journal and that God was honoring those things. The day I turned in my notice to work, I got an email from a blog I was subscribed to, and the first sentence was the scripture that says, “You have been at this mountain for too long, it is time to move”. I had never heard that scripture, but I knew God was speaking to me. I knew He would work everything out, and He did. I left a job in the medical field after 14 years to go into a completely different field. Stepping out on faith and starting a new job allowed me to be exposed to so much more. It gave me the opportunity to advance far faster than I would have ever been able to at my previous job. I was able to see what it was like to have a career versus just having a job. I have met some amazing people that inspired and motivated me to go back to school and complete my degree. December of 2021, I completed my Bachelor of Science Degree in Business with a concentration in Human Resources. I have been at my current job for 5 years now and I can honestly say it’s one of the best decisions I have ever made. If you are feeling stuck or scared to make a major change, I encourage you to pray, ask God for guidance and direction, listen, and be obedient to the voice of God. You will not regret it.

Brown Girls Summer Beauty Trends For

by Shuneil Gadson

A

s the summer sun brings forth its warmth and brilliance, it's time for brown girls to embrace the beauty of their melanin skin and explore makeup and skincare trends that enhance their natural glow. Summer is the perfect season to experiment with vibrant colors, light textures, and skincare routines tailored to keep the skin healthy and radiant. This article will explore some of the top summer trends for makeup and skincare, curated explicitly for our fellow brown beauties. Let's embrace the glow! Women of color have a radiant glow that shines through during summer. To embrace this natural radiance, use luminous makeup products such as highlighters, dewy foundations, and glowing primers. Look for warm gold and bronze shades that complement your skin tone, adding a subtle glow to your cheeks, nose bridge, and brow bones. Recommendation: Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Flawless Filter

Vibrant colors are a girl's best friend: Summer is the season to experiment with bold and vibrant lip colors. Rich berry tones, coral hues, and fiery oranges look stunning on brown skin. Using a matte or creamy lipstick with a hydrating formula will keep your lips looking luscious and vibrant all day. Don't be afraid to play with colors; your melanin-rich skin will carry them with unmatched grace. Recommendation: The Lip Bar Matte Liquid Lipstick

Sun-Kissed Contour: Ditch the heavy contouring for a sun-kissed, natural look this summer. Softly sculpt your cheekbones with a warm bronzer, only a shade or two darker than your skin tone. Blend it seamlessly for a more natural, effortless appearance. This will help create a subtle yet defined contour that looks beautiful in the summer sunlight.

Recommendation: Halo Glow Contour Beauty Wand Protect and Hydrate: Summer can be harsh on the skin, especially for brown girls, who are more susceptible to hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tone. Prioritize skincare products that protect your skin from harmful UV rays, pollution, and heat. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and incorporate it into your daily routine to safeguard your skin from sun damage. Hydrate your skin with lightweight moisturizers to maintain a fresh and supple complexion. Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and aloe vera to lock in moisture without clogging pores. Recommendation: Good Molecules Lightweight Daily Moisturizer and Good Molecules Sheer Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30

Bold Eyes: Elevate your eye makeup game with bold and vibrant eye looks. Experiment with electric blues, emerald greens, and rich purples to complement your brown eyes and add a pop of color to your summer style. Don't forget to use a reliable eyeshadow primer to ensure the colors stay vibrant and crease-free throughout the day. Recommendation: Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion and Black Radiance Brilliant Effects Eye Shadow Palette Summer is the season for brown girls to celebrate their unique beauty and embrace their melanin-rich skin’s warmth and radiance. Following a few of these makeup and skincare trends can create stunning looks that enhance your natural glow. This will keep your skin healthy and protected. Remember to be confident, experiment with colors, and take good care of your skin to ensure you shine as brightly as the summer sun.

For a casual daytime look, try a two piece set or pair of high-waisted bottoms with a crop top and sandals. Accessorize with oversized sunglasses for a chic and effortless look. Flowy dresses - A flowy summer dress is a great way to stay cool while looking stylish. Look for dresses with light, breathable fabrics like cotton or linen. Maxi dresses and midi dresses are both great options. Opt for a flowy maxi dress in a bold print, paired with heeled sandals and statement earrings. Bright colors - Summer is a great time to experiment with bright, bold colors. Think hot pinks, bright yellows, and vibrant greens. Don't be afraid to experiment with bold prints and patterns - summer is the perfect time to have fun and be adventurous with your fashion choices. Remember confidence is an essential element in fashion. It is often said that confidence is the best accessory you can wear, and there's a good reason for that. When you feel confident in what you're wearing, you exude an aura of self-assurance that can make any outfit look amazing. Confidence in fashion means wearing clothes that make you feel good about yourself. It's about choosing pieces that flatter your body type, reflect your personality, and showcase your unique style. It's not about wearing what everyone else is wearing; it's about dressing for yourself and feeling comfortable and confident in your own skin. No matter what your personal style is, there are plenty of fun fashion looks to try out this summer. Embrace your personal style, wear what makes you happy, and let your confidence shine through in all that you do. So get out there and enjoy the sunshine in style!

Spotlight Interview on

DAHSAR LA Mag: Congratulations on receiving the Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award! Seeing your hard work and dedication recognized at such a high level is truly inspiring. Can you tell us briefly about your background and how you started in the fashion industry? DAHSAR: Thank you so much. Receiving that award was such an honor. I started designing at the age of 14. My mom used to buy me many name-brand clothing my peers wore in school. But, I just was different. I wanted my style, so I started cutting up the new clothing to reconstruct it so I could rock it differently. Suddenly, my friends loved it, too, so they started bringing bags of old clothes for me to customize. That was like a bit of hustle in school, which helped me save money to buy my first sewing machine. After that, I just started taking things apart and putting them back together, getting a rhythm of sewing and making simple things. LA MAG: What inspired you to create a showcase for emerging designers at New York Fashion Week? DAHSAR: What inspired me to create a showcase for emerging designers is that I was in that position before where I wanted to show the world my creations and especially at New York Fashion Week, the Mecca of fashion. But once I got the opportunity, it was just so expensive. The cost of what some productions would charge was insane. Then, on top of that, having to pay for your travel and stay, and building your collection becomes very expensive. All of that is just for the opportunitity to show the world who you are. I have done many great productions and shows and gained much support from models. And so now that I have the opportunity to help others, I put together a showcase charging designers at a very low cost to help them showcase a new and grand production, "Dahsar Fashion Week NYC." LA MAG: How do you select the designers who will be featured in your showcase? DAHSAR: For this production, since this is the first production, I've been searching for designers who are hungry and passionate. I watched for individuals who push hard and promote their brand daily. Designers who are consistent with their work, and lastly, who are ready for the world to see who they are. I was able to establish relationships with 2 of the designers, and I also picked some from mutual friends we had. The other two I casted from seeing their work online, but I just loved their spirit and brands all the way around. I want this show to be a buffet of diversity. LA MAG: What can attendees expect to see at your premiere showcase, “Who Is Dahsar?”

DAHSAR: Ha ha, I mean, honestly, they will just have to come and see for themselves. A Dahsar Show is all the way around an experience… But I can tell you this: GET READY FOR A SHOW! LA MAG: What do you hope to achieve through your showcase, both for the designers involved and the fashion industry? DAHSAR: I want to achieve a household of greatness.I want the love to be around the room. I want the new, up-andcoming designers to be able to get through other doors outside of my showcase. That's my purpose. My purpose is to do this seasonally. And gain new relationships with other designers that are also up and coming. To give them their push and that fashion week experience. LA MAG: Can you speak to any trends or themes you've noticed among emerging designers this year? DAHSAR: If you are a fan of Dahsar, then you already know I never go by what's in season, a theme, or trends. I try to blur out what's trending so it doesn't invade my vision. LA MAG: As a successful designer yourself, what advice do you have for aspiring designers looking to break into the industry? DAHSAR: Keep pushing. Be consistent. Never give up. Remember, you are your first fan and your biggest Is supporter. When people see you are serious and consistent with building a brand, they follow suit. LA MAG: As someone constantly in the public eye, can you share how you balance family and fashion, stay on top of your social media, and make it all work? DAHSAR: Well, first, family is a huge position in my life. I honor and take them to heart, and they are very supportive. My parents, my wife, my kids accepter. People don't understand that sometimes it takes a huge team to do many things, but my team is very small. I'm the one who's making the clothes and buying the fabric. Producing the shows, making flyers, and sometimes promoting. (As well as my team and more.) But, I still manage to remain consistent with my family and friends. And, of course, rest my brain when it is needed. LA MAG: What's next for you and your brand after New York Fashion Week? DAHSAR: After this fashion week, I will prepare for February's fashion week. Amid that, I will also be getting ready for some dope special projects that I can't speak about. But now you will be seeing me on your TV screen very soon!

Wear All The Hats One Mom’s Journey from Raising Kids to the Red Carpet

By Toya Poplar

M

y parenting journey started as a stayat-home mom, but when my kids started school, I started school with them. I began by volunteering, then later became an employee. In whatever age stage my kids were in, I was present. Throughout their childhood, I remained true to trying on all the hats. Having a variety of interests keeps motherhood from feeling mundane. I have enjoyed being a mom of many hats. I’ve been a parent coordinator, professional photographer, ghostwriter, youth pastor, and life coach. My journey took a turn in 2019 when I was struck with illness and suffered the emotional pain of ending a long-term friendship. In short, a life of hyper-extension threatened my mobility.

54

L I V E A F F I R M E D ● VO L 3

Each month, I was facing a new medical mystery. With every new ailment, I grieved a different limitation. Sometimes it was a temporary dietary restriction, and other times it was a permanent lifestyle change. It was then that I returned to my first love - making jewelry. I had laid it down for over 20 years, however, in a season filled with non-stop reminders of what I could no longer do, it was helpful for me to focus on what I could do well. I’m aware that work is not everything, but as a creative, something shifts inside you when you realize that you may have less time left to create than you previously

imagined. As I began to reflect on my life, I realized that had I laid down my life and solely invested in my kids, I would have missed getting to watch my many gifts and interests culminate. Though mommyhood seems long, it goes by fast. It’s imperative to nurture yourself and your goals while giving your children the time and attention they need. If life throws you an unexpected turn, you won’t secretly resent your children. Even though we have seasons in which we press pause doesn’t mean we never get to play. Children learn what they live, and as a result of my many pivots and multiple pursuits, I have raised resilient adults who work hard and chase their dreams while prioritizing their well-being. My journey has been far from easy. There were some days in which my body betrayed me so badly that the only way I knew how to cope was to not look like what I was walking through. I was relieved each time my earrings became the topic of conversation and not how much weight I had lost. The gift that I had laid aside because it was once a hazard to my busy toddlers was a balm to my soul when cuteness and comfort became my coping method. If you ever find yourself in a season in which what worked no longer does, remember that the work you do doesn’t determine who you are. Who you are determines how you cope. Instead of giving up, give yourself grace. It is never too late to pivot. Here I am (25 years after becoming a mom,) headed to New York Fashion Week to watch my earring designs on the runway. Being a mom can feel sacred one moment and like serving a sentence the next. God has a way of rewarding you for your labor and redeeming the time. One full-circle moment can make your whole life make sense. Go ahead and try on that new hat, God knows where it will lead you.

The Importance of

Supporting Your Spouse By Toya Poplar 58

E

arly in my marriage, when my husband shared his dreams, I couldn’t understand how we could go from where we were to where he envisioned. It wasn’t that I didn’t believe in him. I just felt powerless to make his dreams come true. Over time, I learned that making his dreams come true wasn’t my job. That’s God’s job. (Trigger warning: I’m about to use a word many consider harmful.) My role as a wife is to walk in submission. If you look up the word "submit,” you will find anything from “to serve,” as in serving a meal, to a military term that implies “to surrender,” as in battle. For the sake of this article not turning into a word study, let’s say submission means “to defer to someone out of respect by lifting and supporting them with your gifts." Even though I couldn’t always see the big picture, offering support hasn’t been complex. He is wise, loves God, and consistently seeks to do what's best for our family. When he invites me to embark upon something new, I trust that things will work together for our good.

My husband shared that in the past, he would get nervous when I would begin to dream. Proverbs 3:5 & 6 became his favorite scripture because it helped him trust God and stop thinking he was responsible for granting the desires of his heart. When we both stopped leaning on our understanding, we were able to set our intentions toward letting God direct our paths.

60

L I V E A F F I R M E D ● VO L 3

For the same reasons that it wasn’t easy for me to support him, it hasn’t always been as easy for him to support me. His natural aversion to risks makes him resistant to change. But just because he has been reluctant sometimes doesn’t mean my dreams were any less important.

Now that we’ve discussed how supporting each other’s dreams has been crucial in maintaining the health of my marriage let's delve into some practical ways you can do so in yours. Here are some points to consider. Sounding board- Be a safe place for your spouse to share. One key to actualizing a goal is to keep it before your eyes. Having someone listen to your ideas is fertile ground for your dream to grow. Undergird and uplift. When fears arise, keeping a level head and an open heart are invaluable assets to your spouse. Prayer decreases stress and makes a difference in the overall health of your marriage. Patience and planning. Be patient with your spouse and remind them to be patient with themselves. As you plan, think of your progress in terms of a baby. No one expects a 3-month-old to be self-sufficient or a toddler to pay their bills. Lowering your standards can help you set realistic expectations. Offer feedback. As a sounding board, purpose partner, and prayer warrior for their dream, no one is more qualified to offer feedback. Sometimes, a spouse has a vantage point to see a blind spot that no one else is privy to. Remind your spouse to practice self-care and that you believe in their ability to achieve their goal. Your reassurance will mean the world to them. Take time out to celebrate successes. There’s nothing worse than sharing a climactic moment and receiving an anti-climactic response from the MVP. Supporting your spouse’s dream is not just about goal achievement. It’s about strengthening your marriage bond to overcome obstacles and reap rewards.

Transitioning Your Fitness Routine:

Exercises to Embrace from Summer by J'Que Ellis

As the vibrant days of summer gradually give way to the crisp embrace of fall, it's time to adapt your fitness routine to the changing seasons. Embracing the unique beauty of both summer and autumn, many exercises seamlessly bridge the gap between these two dynamic periods. Whether savoring the last sun-kissed moments or relishing the kaleidoscope of fall foliage, maintaining your fitness regimen remains paramount. This comprehensive guide will explore various exercises that seamlessly transition your fitness routine from summer to fall. We'll also embrace each season's natural wonders. Try moving your yoga practice outdoors to connect with nature's serenity fully. Bask in the warmth of the summer sun during sun salutations or embrace grounding poses amid the autumn foliage. Both options provide a calming and invigorating workout experience. Whether on a road or mountain bike, cycling is a versatile exercise that can be done in various environments. Cycle along beachside paths as the last summer rays shine down or hit the leaf-strewn trails during autumn's beauty. High-intensity interval training (HIIT) is a perfect way to fit in an efficient workout from anywhere, indoors or outdoors. Switching from summer outdoor circuit training and beach sprints to indoor HIIT fall sessions will provide a flexible and effective routine. As the outdoors shifts indoors, it's a perfect time to incorporate bodyweight exercises, resistance bands, or dumbbells in your strength training at home. Adding these components to your workouts, you'll maintain your muscle tone while preparing for the colder months.

Hiking during fall offers an opportunity to relish the natural beauty of autumn foliage and crisp air. Find hiking trails with gorgeous, vibrant fall colors to receive cardio benefits and awe-inspiring sights. Switch from outdoor Pilates to indoor studios as the weather cools down. These low-impact exercises focusing on core strength, flexibility, and posture can help transition seamlessly to fall workouts. Incorporating functional exercises, which mimic everyday movements, can also help to improve overall fitness and mobility. From kayaking in the summer to raking leaves in the fall, these workouts are a great way to embrace everyday activity and keep up your fitness. Transitioning from the more relaxed pace of summer to the briskness of autumn, incorporating walks into your daily routine is an excellent way to maintain an active lifestyle. This is particularly important as the season changes, as remaining physically active can help promote well-being and good health... Adding mindfulness practices such as paying attention to your breathing and environment can also transform these walks into a meditative experience. Transitioning your fitness routine from summer to fall is a testament to your commitment to a well-rounded and dynamic lifestyle. By embracing these diverse exercises, you're not only maintaining your physical health but also immersing yourself in the unique wonders of each season. So, whether you're savoring the last sun-soaked rays or marveling at the splendor of fall's colors, remember that your fitness journey is an ongoing celebration of transformations.

If you're a fan of aquatic exercises during summer, then moving indoors in the fall can help sustain your love of water-based fitness. Water aerobics, swimming laps, or even aqua yoga in indoor pools can provide an excellent way to get your fitness routine going.

Wellness Fashion

By J'Que Ellis

I

n recent years, wellness has become an essential focus in people's lives, and fashion is no exception.

As the world becomes increasingly aware of the importance of self-care, a new trend is emerging in the fashion industry: wellness fashion. This trend towards incorporating wellness principles into fashion has created new and exciting clothing lines. Gone are the days of sacrificing comfort for style. More and more designers are creating clothing lines prioritizing physical and mental well-being. From yoga pants made with breathable, moisture-wicking fabric to meditation-friendly sweaters made from sustainable materials, wellness fashion is all about feeling good inside and out. The most important aspect of wellness fashion is that it should be comfortable, functional, and fashionable. These three elements work together to help you feel and look your best. However, another critical factor in creating wellness fashion is finding clothing designed specifically for your body type and activity level. For example, if you're a runner, you may want to find breathable, sweat-wicking clothing that allows for free movement.

Wellness fashion goes beyond just athletic clothing. Wellness fashion also focuses on comfort. Instead, you'll find clothing that allows you to move freely and feel at ease throughout the day. It also includes clothing made from eco-friendly materials that are good for the environment and your health. You can find clothing made from bamboo, hemp, and other sustainable materials perfect for cycling, meditation, or everyday wear. One of the best things about wellness fashion is that it can help you feel more confident and motivated daily. When you look good and feel comfortable, you're more likely to feel positive and energetic, improving overall health and well-being. Sharonda Ware of Chocolate Rocket City

LA MAG: What was the inspiration behind Chocolate Rocket City? Sharonda: “Chocolate Rocket City” was inspired by my move from “Chocolate City” (the DC metro area) to the “Rocket City” (Huntsville). When I first got to Huntsville, I found that there were websites and calendars for kids’ activities, but nothing that focused on grown folks who need a night with the “fellas,” “girls night” or “date night.” I was impressed by the number of social options and events here, but frustrated by those occurring on the same night, or the effort needed to learn when and where they were and to purchase tickets-- either because the information was only available offline, via individuals’ social posts or buried in conventional sites that are not focused on black events. After repeatedly hearing from friends that they did not know “X,Y,Z” artist was in town, or participating in great events that could have been more well-attended, I literally dreamt up “Chocolate Rocket City.” I wanted to make it easier for folks to know what’s happening and for event planners and promoters to capture that crowd more efficiently and effectively. LA MAG: What do you want the people of Huntsville to know about Chocolate Rocket City? Sharonda: I want the people of Huntsville to know that they are blessed with so much talent in black culture and music, and that the purpose of Chocolate Rocket City is to help them to enjoy it more. The website has articles about future and past events, and the calendar helps folks to know what is happening when and to get tickets to go. The social media group and pages (Instagram and Facebook) have flyers with the top 5 events, photos, and videos from the events, so you can share with your friends. The site is mobile optimized to function like an app, and you can import events to your personal calendar so that you can remember to go to the events that interest you. LA MAG: What is your favorite part of an event or social outing? Sharonda: My two favorite types of events are live music and galas, because I love being able to see and hear an artist share their gifts close-up, and I love dressing up and breaking bread for a good cause. My favorite part of an event is in the middle, after I’m seated and have greeted folks, and the main event is on stage performing or speaking and I’m able to smile and think to myself, “Wow, this is awesome!” LA MAG: What is you’re the most memorable you have attended in your lifetime? How did it impact you? Sharonda: I’ve been blessed to attend a lot of memorable events—but the Snoop Dogg concert at the Orion Amphitheater in Huntsville on August 15, 2023, was the most memorable event I attended in recent memory, because it was everything I dreamed of when starting Chocolate Rocket City! It was an incredibly diverse crowd, celebrating Hip-hop together, peacefully. The lighting, the sound, the space was top-notch. And it was right here in Huntsville! No flights, hour-plus drive, hotel stay, or parking reservations were required. And I got to hang out with my neighbors, friends, church buddies, online friends in person. I LOVED IT!!! LA MAG: How can people connect with Chocolate Rocket City? Sharonda: Sign up on the website at www.chocolaterocketcity.com. Join the public Facebook group Chocolate Rocket City, like the Facebook page, and follow us on Instagram @chocolaterocketcity. By late 2024 we want to launch a YouTube channel, and have merch available for purchase at some of your favorite events!

Bringing the Magic Back to Summer

By Sarah Clem

S

ummer is popsicles on a hot day and lounging by the pool. It’s grilling out with family and catching fireflies once the sun goes down.

Or at least, it used to be. Summer is a time that is just like any other. We wake up, go to work in the obtrusive heat and come home to the kids pestering us to entertain them. Summer loses its magic as we grow up. It's no longer a welcomed reprieve from the daily tedium of life. Instead, it is the daily tedium of life, but now our legs stick to the leather seats in our car and the steering wheel is hot to the touch when we need to be getting to work. Summer is now having to mow the lawn more often and make sure that we have someone in place to look after the kids. There's something about being over the age of 18 (or maybe 22) that causes summer to lose its sparkle, and we need to do something about getting it back. The magic won’t come back in a massive way, and it's not something that will come back on its own. We have to be able to bring the magic back to summer. We have to remind ourselves what it was like when we were kids, playing outside all day without a care

in the world. Eating our lunch, with dirty hands, sitting on the front porch of the neighbor kid’s house. When we were kids, the most exciting things were going to the community pool on the weekends and back-to-school shopping. They were playing with our friends and getting to visit the cousins we haven’t seen in a while. And now that we aren’t kids anymore, we have this idea in our heads that those are things that we just can’t do anymore. But why not? Sure, we can’t just go to the community pool in the middle of the work week, but we can make an effort to schedule dinner with friends. We can pay for general admission lawn tickets at a concert where we only know three of the band’s songs, and still dance the night away. We can spend time in the sun, soaking up its rays. We can plan for a vacation that all the members of the family will enjoy. We can play mini-golf with our friends and make arrangements to see the family that we don’t see that often. We can buy that cute swimsuit that may be a little outside of our budget or just go window shopping. We can bring back some of the magic of summer, so why don’t we?

Spotlight Interview on

JASMIN SASHIER LA MAG: Jasmin, first of all, congratulations on your upcoming debut at New York Fashion Week! Can you tell us how you got into modeling and how you balance it with being a single mom of four? JASMIN :First of all, thank you so much. God is faithful. I got into modeling because I was at a wedding, and the photographer who was doing the wedding was intrigued by the photo shoot. Both he and his wife said that I had a naturally fierce face. He asked if he could do a photo shoot with him after the wedding and asked me to go to Atlanta in a few weeks for a model call. He believed that the designers would pick me. He was right. 3 out of the 4 designers chose me to wear their garments. I ended up walking for 2 out of the 3 that chose me. And in terms of balancing it, it’s God. Honestly, I’m still shocked that I’m doing it. I’m just out here living it. I take things one day at a time and try to enjoy myself. LA MAG: We understand that you work as a School Suspension teacher at a high school and coach basketball in your free time. How do you juggle your coaching responsibilities with your modeling career and family life? JASMIN: That’s easy as far as working at the high school because I work during the day. As for basketball, I get the honor of coaching 2 of my 4 boys. I can simultaneously be a coach and a mom, so it’s a family affair. It’s a blessing being able to coach my boys. I think it has made our relationship closer. It’s a privilege to be able to coach my kids. When it comes to modeling, family comes first. Basketball comes second because that’s what my kids love to do. Modeling comes third. I have to put things into perspective. My priority is being a mom and doing what my boys love to do. I believe in instilling values in my babies, exploring their gifts and talents, and training them on how they should go.

LA MAG: You will be modeling for celebrity designer Rashad Calhoun, aka Dahsar, at New York Fashion Week and F.L.Y. Earrings by Toya. How did you feel when you were selected for such a prestigious event? JASMIN: Ummm, I’m still in shock. It still doesn’t feel real. At times, I feel so undeserving. I thank God for this fantastic opportunity. I thank God that Dahsar and Toya even considered me. The fact that they both recognize and see things in me that I can’t even see in myself. It’s still mind-blowing. I feel like I’m living in a dream. I’m so overjoyed. I thank God for this opportunity. LA MAG: What do you hope to achieve through your modeling career, and how do you see yourself using your platform to inspire others? JASMIN: I want to use modeling as a vehicle to get me to where God wants me to be. There are so many things I can do through this and many opportunities I can open for others who probably feel the same way I thought. I started modeling at 36, a Single woman raising 4 kids, recently divorced. I didn’t have the courage; didn’t think I was pretty enough. . . I didn’t have the confidence to do this, and to be able to do it is an opportunity to show people that it’s never too late. If you continue to walk by faith and trust God, you can accomplish those desires you thought you couldn’t. It can all come to pass. This is not about me, and I want God to get the glory out of my life and give hope to those who may have given up on themselves or didn’t think they were good enough for those women who believed that they were too big, too small, too short, too tall. There are so many negative stigmas on modeling that I’ve experienced. I want to help people to walk fearlessly into a field that has historically been intimidating. One of the most significant areas I’ve experienced resistance was people thinking I was going down the wrong path. LA MAG: Finally, what advice would you give to other single moms pursuing their dreams while balancing family responsibilities? JASMIN: Never lose faith. Never stop dreaming. Keep striving. Keep the faith no matter what it looks like. Continue to trust God with the process. Don’t give up. Keep trusting God. All things are working for your good and in due time. Don’t let anybody stop you, even if you must put it to the side for a little while. It may take a bit longer, but your family responsibilities come first. All things are possible. Just keep God, instead. I don’t care how long it takes. Never give up. I’ve been fortunate enough to pursue my dreams and be a mom at the same time. Your dream might not make sense to others, but if your heart desires to do it, do it.

WORK LIFE BALANCE

By Monretta Vega

W

ork-life balance means developing a healthy balance between your working life and your personal life. Work-life balance isn’t necessarily defined as an even split between the hours you spend at work and the hours you spend on hobbies.

Some may think of work-life balance as a balance between success and enjoyment. The perfect work-life balance would mean never sacrificing one for the other. It involves continually push towards your achievements in a professional sense while also finding new and fulfilling ways to enjoy your time off. Work-life balance is the idea that a fulfilling life outside of work helps improve work performance while reducing stress. The time a person spends working should be balanced by time spent with friends and family, along with doing other fulfilling hobbies. A healthy work-life balance means different things to us all. In today’s fast paced world, the ability to achieve work-life balance is becoming more and more difficult. The concept of work-life balance is to bring awareness to the fact that being a workaholic is detrimental to a person’s physical and mental well-being. Socializing, physical activity, and hobbies all contribute to being healthier and happier. Everyone is at risk of letting work take up an unhealthy portion of their life. For those who already enjoy their jobs, awareness of work-life balance can help ensure that they continue to enjoy their jobs, reduce stress, and prevent burnout. Poor work-life balance can have serious effects on your mental health. These days, work-life balance can seem like an impossible task. Research shows 94% of working professionals reported working more than 50 hours per week and nearly half said they worked more than 65 hours per week. Here are strategies and tips to help you find the balance: 1. Unplug There are times when you should just shut your phone off and enjoy the moment. Make quality time by not reacting to the updates from work, you will develop a stronger habit of resilience. Resilient people feel a greater sense of control over their lives, while reactive people have less control and are more prone to stress. 2. Create a Healthy Lifestyle The way you take care of your body can impact your mood and emotions. A healthy, balanced appetite along with at least 6 to 8 hours of sleep can provide a foundation for self-care. Exercise is a great outlet of stress and can release endorphins to increase a positive mood. 3. Prioritize First, identify what’s most important in your life. This list will differ for everyone, so make sure it truly reflects your priorities, not someone else. Next, draw firm boundaries so you can devote quality time to these high-priority people and activities. From there, it will be easier to determine what needs to be trimmed from the schedule. Focus on the people and activities that reward you the most. To some, this may seem selfish. Research shows, this is not selfish, the better you are yourself, the better you are going to be in all those areas as well. 4. Change the structure of your life Sometimes we assume our habits are set in stone. Take a birds-eye view of your life and ask yourself: What changes could make life easier? Focus on activities you specialize in and value most. Find out what you can do to let go in ways that benefit other people by giving them opportunities to grow. This will give them a chance to learn something new and free you up so you may devote attention to your higher priorities. We tend to underestimate how much maintaining balance contributes to living life successfully and productively. WE do not have to adhere to a strict regimen, but in order to function as our best, we definitely need to balance taking care of ourselves physically, mentally, emotionally, and spirituality.

here are moments when life will gift us with the opportunity to face our fears and live our dreams, and it is solely up to us to decide if we will, in fact, show up for ourselves the way that is needed. I have found that living out our dreams is often on the other side of trauma, facing fears, old hang-ups, and having to reaccess what we are made of. This has been the story of my life for at least the past 13 years. Most moments of my life that required me to believe in myself and God on a deeper level have catapulted me and grown me in insurmountable ways. In those quiet moments, there is a call and a push to search within myself and to remember that I have overcome many hard things with God and that even if I happen to fail in whatever thing I am taking on, it does not mean I am a failure, this process allows me to take the pressure off of and be in the moment and if it reaps benefits then great and if it does not I at least stepped out and showed up. Recently, I walked the runway in NYFW, an experience I will never forget. When the opportunity first came, I was enraptured in all the little girl dreams I once had about being a model. Then, the fear of how I would perform on the runway began. You may be thinking, "It's just a walk, girl," and I would say you are correct. Except there is one thing you still need to include. When you are on the runway, it is you versus you. What do I mean by that? It's easy to get caught up in the skillset other models have and what the audience thinks of you as you step out. Learning to take all this information in and put it to the side while simultaneously showing up strong in who you are is the gag. It was exhilarating and bewildering for someone like me who has had no training in this area. God has notoriously placed me in rooms where I have often wondered, "How did I end up here? I am untrained and do not know what I am doing." I still have an interest in being in the room. It

means I have yet to gain a traditional skillset, and I am to operate entirely on instinct. Then I remember that if God has placed me in this space, I can trust his vision for me, and all I have to do is show up and allow him to be God. It is this notion that has been life-changing for me. God has shown me over multiple seasons of my life that I am capable of so much more than I ever thought, and the broken perspectives I had of myself growing up are not how he sees me or how he desires me to see myself. His vision for me is beautiful and vast; my part is to agree with him and walk confidently. This understanding has changed my life completely over the last twelve years, and if you are ready to step out, here are a few things to help in your process: 1.

Show up anyway- The fear of failure often debilitates us from taking bold steps towards our dreams. Our job is to show up despite the fear and obstacles. Showing up is always half the battle.

2.

Believe- With God on our side, we can do anything. Will we make the voice of our deficiencies louder than our strengths? In these moments, it's always best to remember what God has done for you in the past; this strengthens our faith to step out again.

3.

Face your fear- The only way to shut fear down is to face it. The more often we face our fears, the more we will allow it to rob us of the good waiting for us on the other side.

4.

Remember who you are- Who are you? What are your giftings? The world needs you to show up. It's waiting for you to walk in your power and be who God called you to be.
