Editor’s

Letter

Spring is my absolute favorite time of year for many reasons. The first is the excitement in the air of all the fun things to do now that the weather is a bit warmer. I have always found Spring fashion to be so exciting and whimsical. Growing up, I would grab all the magazines I could, and check the Spring Trends sections and become enamored by the beauty of it all. From the budding flowers to the fashion, I was always inspired by how the world around me awakened in Spring. From the cover to the last page, you will find this to be an homage to Spring and all of her many facets. Her beauty is unmatched. If your city is anything like mine, your calendar is lined with events for the coming weeks and possibly even months. Socializing, traveling, and outdoor activities have now headed to the forefront and the energy is contagious. If you are looking for things to do please check out our “Girls Night Out” article (page 14 ) For Spring looks and trends and what to wear to every social gathering you can think of head on over to (page 44) I am so excited to showcase the stories that the contributors have shared in overcoming great odds and in their lives and I hope that their stories and voices will give you strength in whatever obstacles you face. I invite you to dig into our spring recipes, and work outs as you put your best foot forward for Spring.

Erin’s Picks: Spring List High Tea: While this is my longtime favorite pastime, I think they are all the more spectacular in Spring. This is a spring favorite from fashion to small bites and catching up over tea varieties.

Travel: St Lucia- I visited in March with my husband, and from the food to this Island's amazing people, I instantly fell in love. I desired to do nothing but eat, bask in the sun, and take in the natural beauty that St. Lucia offered. Each moment was filled with serenity and fulfillment, from the Pitons to the mud baths. Be sure to check out some of the photos in my article “Inner Definition” to see St. Lucia and some of her glory. Fragrance: : La Vie Est Belle de Perfume: This is my newest and latest love in the scent category, and she smells like Spring to me. I have enjoyed wearing her on date nights and girl's night out because this scent is soft and feminine. 6

Ig user: How do you balance being a wife, entrepreneur, and working full time? Erin: Whew! The true answer is it is not easy. At all. I have to be focused at all times, and when I am not, an area may be lacking. When I wake up every morning, I list what I need to do that day, including time for my husband, cleaning, exercise, cooking, etc. That way, I don’t forget something important that day. This has been my best

approach because each season requires my attention and effort differently. My best advice is that my home life and health come first, and everything else follows. Find a flow that works best for you and your household, and don’t be afraid to shift seasonally as needed. It’s ok to evaluate what is working and not working, and it’s also ok to check in with your household and ask or assess what is a priority at this time so you can make decisions based on that.

3 Ways to

OVERCOME HEALTH OBSTACLES By Jillian Cunningham

H

i, friends! If you’re going through a difficult health season, I feel you, and my hope is that after you read this, you’ll feel seen, refreshed, and energized to keep going. So please sit back, grab your decaf lactose-free latte, and let’s get this party started!

I grew up a relatively healthy kid. I ate my greens, brushed my teeth, never broke a bone, and rarely stepped out of line. In 2019, after turning 22 years old and a few irregular bowel movements later, I was at the Gastrointestinal (GI) doctor getting ready for my first colonoscopy. Cute, right?

After the procedure, and after I asked my nurse if I had a sexy colon (yes, that happened), I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease called ulcerative colitis. I didn’t know what that meant or how that could impact a person’s life, so I just lived like normal but with a few added pills to my daily routine. Fast forward to September 2020. I was 23 years old and in the hospital with sores on my left leg and an infection in my colon that was slowly killing me. My body was not digesting nutrients, and I was malnourished. From the hospital bed, I could hear doctors discussing the possibility of my colon removal. I didn’t know it then, but that would be the beginning of an amazing story Thankfully, the doctors did not remove my colon, but my long recovery journey began. I had so little energy that I could barely move. For a while, all I heard from doctors was the tragedy of my condition. The one phrase I heard most during those visits was, “You’re only 23; you’re too young to be sick.” I was too young to be sick. I was in my 20s! How could this happen to me? My boyfriend was ready to propose to me. How can I get married when I can’t walk down the aisle? Will he still love me if I have to wear an adult diaper on our wedding night?

24

L I V E A F F I R M E D ● VO L 2

But that darkness is only part of my story. I’ve had ulcerative colitis for three years now, and two of those years have been filled with excruciating pain and discomfort. But those years have also been filled with so much joy and hope. Even through everything, people have asked how I still have so much joy. How does someone go through something like that and come out on the other side happier than when they went in? Here are three ways I overcame my health obstacles:

colitis than I did, and he stuck by me through it all. When I was healthy enough, he proposed, and I could walk down the aisle on my wedding day! Also, remember you are not alone, and there are groups online who are walking a similar journey. I just searched the “ulcerative colitis” hashtag on Instagram and found many girls like me going through what I was going through. It helped my confidence and showed me if they could do it, so could I. Don’t forget to seek professional help. There’s no shame!

1. Learn & Grieve. 3. Maintain the Proper Perspective. Learn what is happening to your body to know how to help it heal. As I learned, I also realized that my life would never be the same again. I had to take time to grieve. To grieve the life I had before and the life I hoped to have in the future, a life with no chronic illness. It’s okay to sit in sadness. It’s okay to want your situation to be different. It’s okay. 2. Gather Your Support System & Share Your Emotions. Gather family, close friends, and even an online commu- nity to help go through the process with you. I was sur- rounded by people who knew what I was going through and were willing to learn with me. There was a time when my boyfriend knew more about ulcerative

You are not your illness. You are not an inconvenience. Your worth is not in your health. I’m going to tell it straight. I would not be where I am today without Jesus. God constantly reminded me that I am not my illness. I was created perfectly and am who I was meant to be. Before I was born, he knew I would have this pain. He did not want that but knew I wouldn’t go through it alone. That gave me hope to keep going. If you are going through a similar health obstacle, my heart aches with you for all the times that you feel invisible, exhausted, and depleted. You are more than just “the sick girl”. Your redemption story is still being written. I’m rooting for you to kick chronic illness in the butt and live your best possible lactose-free-latte life.

What is

Pelvic Health? Dr. Sha’Rose Erion

’m sure by now we have all heard the term Pelvic Health. It is a hot topic; many companies are selling ways to improve pelvic health. Do you ask, “What is pelvic health?” and “Do I need it?” To answer one of those questions, we all need pelvic health care. Let’s talk about pelvic health and three tips to help improve it with exercises accompanying them. Pelvic health is not merely performing Kegels or tightening the pelvic floor; trust me, that is another article. Pelvic health involves treating, functioning, and managing conditions in the pelvic floor, bladder, bowels, reproductive organs, hips, back, or abdomen. Anything directly above and below the belt is part of pelvic health. These areas significantly affect mental, social, physical, and sexual health. Heavy on sexual health. The folks responsible for pelvic health include Pelvic Floor Physical Therapists (PFPT). Pain with sexual activity, painful menstrual cycles, urinary leakage, abdominal surgeries of any kind, and constipation are conditions these provideos can assist with.2 Leading by example, Dr. Sha’Rose is improving her painful menstrual cycle using the tools and resources she provides patients as a PFPT. What is the Pelvic Floor? The pelvic floor combines bones, joints, ligaments, and muscles around the pelvis. This combination of structures is interconnected to support the internal organs, abdominal muscles, hips, and glute muscles. This connection allows them to maintain bladder control, bowel control, pregnancy, and sexual function.

32

L I V E A F F I R M E D ● VO L 2

Three tips to improve pelvic health 1. Understand your breathing Belly Breathing or Abdominal Breathing is the best way to do this. You place one hand on the chest and the other on the belly. As you breathe in, the hand on your belly should move more than the hand on your chest. That provides for the most adequate and effective movement of the Pelvic Floor.

2. Release your pelvic floor Instead of trying to hold and squeeze the glutes and inner thighs, we need to release those areas. By lying on your back or sitting, bring the feet together and separate the knees apart. This butterfly stretch helps to release the pelvic floor muscles. This exercise works even better combined with belly breathing.

3. Decrease food irritants and inflammation The bladder and body can be sensitive to certain things. Bladder irritants such as caffeine, carbonation, and decreased water intake can cause leakage and urgency to pee. Inflammatory foods such as spicy foods, sugar, and saturated fats can cause increased inflammation, leading to increased pain and slower healing times. I am not suggesting stopping all those things; the best way to make changes is slowly and through moderation. Adding more water before and after bladder irritants and more low-inflammatory foods to diet goes a long way. Nothing is absolute, and all things depend on your body and health. The best way to ensure you are doing what’s best for you is to contact a Pelvic Floor Physical Therapist and schedule a consultation.

Just Dance :

ne of my favorite parts about Spring is feeling the cool air on my scalp and the warm sun on my toasted chestnut skin. My ears hear the high-pitched song of a new season. My eyes are captivated as all creation wakes up and dances to the beat of Mother Nature’s springtime rhythm.

Navigating singleness in Spring is unique fun. Dating, engagements, bachelorette parties, and baby showers are typical springtime experiences. While I long for my love story to unfold, I also celebrate the love of others. But ‘Chile,’ as I prepare for this season’s festivities, There is one problem: I can’t dance. I am single, voluptuous, rhythm-free, and tempo-losing. Before you take away my “Blaque-Card,” understand this: I was a church girl raised in that weird 80/90’s era of Christianity where dancing was demonized. That 80’s anti-dance movie was my reality- except no one was showing up to save me from my dance-free habitat. Since my dancing aerobics videos did not prepare me for the real dance floor, I cringe at the thought of wedding receptions. As I would drive to my friend’s weddings, my mind would be overtaken with a diversity of excuses, strategies, and detours to utilize just in case I would be asked to dance. Every time someone would start walking towards me to ask me to dance, I suddenly would have to go to the bathroom to check on something! Whenever the DJ calls for “All the Single Ladies” to get on the dance floor, I must go to the bathroom to check something. Well, this Spring is a new season! Last summer, at my dear friend’s wedding, I gave my last excuse for not dancing. During a ZUMBA class, I learned to clear my brain and surrender my body to the rhythm of the music. It took a while (and a few therapy sessions), and then last week, during a dance session, I set my body free. How? I didn’t think about whether I was doing the right moves. I didn’t wonder who was looking at me. I didn’t try to control the jiggle of my extra juicy body. I closed my eyes, tilted my head back, and let go. I danced. Like the giraffe in my favorite book, “Giraffes Can’t Dance,” I twirled and whirled on the dance floor, saying to myself, “I am dancing! I am dancing!” Like our animal friends on the first day of Spring, I allowed my body to follow its natural instincts. I realized that our bodies are created to Spring into step when we hear the music and rhythms we love. So this Spring, set yourself free. Clear your mind. Stop trying to follow the rules. Your creativity can never be wrong because if you enjoy yourself, you do it right. Just Dance. Dance in the sun. Dance in the rain. Dance at home or in beautiful exotic places. Dance in your highest heels or barefoot. Dance naked. Dance in your church or at your favorite concert. Dance alone, with a friend, or with a random stranger. Let your body wiggle. Celebrate your jiggle! Free your mind, tilt your head back, and close your eyes. Absorb the rhythm of Spring and dance!

GRIEF TO JOY BY KYLA GLOVER

T

he Oxford Dictionary defines grief as "deep sorrow," especially caused by someone's death, and joy as a feeling of "great pleasure and happiness." While these words are opposites, they can share the same space when tragedy strikes. In other words, you don't have to suppress one to feel the other. I know you're probably thinking, "How can grief and joy be present.

At the same time"? Honestly, I didn't believe they could co-exist, either. When I lost my mom last October, I didn't think I would ever have joy again. The depth of my pain was indescribable and undefinable. I was frustrated with the definition of grief because what I was experiencing was deeper than what was defined. It was in my deepest place of pain that I cried out to God to comfort me, and that's when He helped me realize that grief is love. Grief is love? Yes, it's love that has nowhere to go. When you lose someone, they leave, but your love for them lives on. This new perspective changed my entire world. If grief is love and love is God and He is the giver of joy, then grief isn't too far from joy, right? Right. The bigger question is, how do you navigate from grief to joy? So, let's talk about that question. Understand what joy is. Joy is a spiritual quality gifted from God to us-it's a fruit of The Spirit. You know that old school saying, "This joy I have, the world didn't give it, and the world can't take it away..."? There's truth to that. Joy doesn't come from the world, so it can't be taken away by the world's circumstances, even if it feels like it. Joy is rooted in who God is, so it transforms and regenerates us. That's why Neh 8:10 says, "The joy of the Lord is your strength." Choose the roots of your grief. If you allow your grief to choose its own roots, it'll most likely be the root of anger, resentment, frustration, and even isolation. However, if you choose the roots, they can be rooted in love, peace, strength, grace, and acceptance. Choose- ing your roots can lead to the bridge between grief and joy. That bridge is called hope. Make space for and permit yourself to feel them both. Continuing to experience the emotions/feelings that come with grief doesn't mean you're stuck; it means you lost someone you love, and are human. Having moments of joy doesn't mean you've forgotten about your loved one. It means you're healing and growing. You deserve to feel, heal, and grow. Friend, as you start/continue your journey from grief to joy remember it's not an easy journey. It's an INTENTIONAL one. Give yourself grace. Allow God to have your heart so He can heal it-He can't heal what He can't have. We're on this journey together.

"If you allow your grief to choose its own roots, it’ll most likely be the roots of anger, resentment, frustration, and even isolation. However, if you choose the roots, it can be rooted in love, peace, strength, grace, and acceptance."

"Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted." Matthew 5:4 God LOVES YOU and so do I! 42

Fashion Looks for Spring 2023 By Tasha Nelson

S

pring has sprung in the Tennessee Valley! The daffodils are blooming, and we have warmer days to look forward to. This is my favorite season for fashion because we get to see all

of the new trends for the oncoming year. Traditionally in spring, especially in the south, we see a lot of pastels, floral, seersucker, gingham, and pearls! This year add one more to that list: Muted Pastel. What sets muted pastel apart from our beloved pastel? Pastels are the purest shade of color with a white undertone. This makes those shade light and airy. A muted pastel has darker undertones and an earthier vibe to it. She is beautiful in her own right and everywhere this Spring!!! There is no shortage of events and holidays in this enchanting season. So where are we going and what are we wearing? I've curated several ready-to-wear styles from boutiques local to the greater Huntsville area. These fresh picks can be purchased online or in stores, so follow and support your local businesses. I made sure to incorporate new trends and old favorites. Here are my top choices for on- trend and fashion-forward looks for different occasions this Spring.

SPRING BEAUTY VIVA TRENDS

MAGENTA

Kierra Franchesca

After a pandemic where we weren't wearing much makeup, it's no wonder. We are reaching for a punch of color to pair with sun-kissed glowy skin for Spring. A hot pink called "Viva Magenta" reminiscent of blush has been named the color of the year by the American color company Pantone I created a soft magenta, glowy spring look for our editor and chief, Erin, using the Charlotte tilbury pillow talk beautifying face palette in medium deep on her eyes. I paired this look with stila cosmetics stay all day liquid matte lipstick in the "Patina shimmer" shade for a fresh pop of color that would go well with any spring outfit. 48

Spotlight Interview on

DONNA MCCLENDON Of Let’s Talk Veterans

L I V E A F F I R M E D ● VO L 2

Please tell us the inspiration behind Let’s Talk Veterans. My inspiration for Let’s Talk Veterans was to create a platform for veterans to be open and honest with other veterans to talk about their experiences in the military and have a supportive relationship.

What is the most important thing you want people to know about your Non-Profit? I want people to know that we are still humans after we have served in the military. Sometimes it’s hard to reintegrate into civilian life, so that it can get complicated. They need support and guidance and the ability to transition properly.

What inspires you and keeps you motivated? I am a disabled veteran, and I have had many issues dealing with anxiety and depression; my family keeps me motivated, but the group that I interact with regularly keeps me focused, knowing that I am making a difference in their lives and if I can save one veteran from suicide, I know I can help others.

What are your plans for the future? I plan to open a volunteer center to help and support the veterans in the community and have a disability claim service and financial support classes and apprenticeship opportunities for vets.

What advice do you have for women veterans looking for community? For my women Veterans, I want them to know you are not forgotten, and we are here to support them and show them that their sacrifice was not in vain. Join us and be part of a community that will celebrate you.

How can people connect with you? Please connect with us on our website at www.letstalkvets.org

Transforming Trauma: How Choosing To Heal Creates Change in Our Relationships by Keisha Wright

It’s a word we hear everywhere, from medical tv shows to social media influencers to Self-help books. But what exactly is trauma, and how does it impact our lives? Trauma is defined as “the lasting emotional response that often results from living through a distressing event. You don’t have to have suffered a lifealtering tragedy to have trauma; it can come from anything that causes you pain—even seemingly small things. A comment from a family member that shaped your body image from positive to negative

52

L I V E A F F I R M E D ● VO L 2

or criticism from a parent or teacher made you feel you would never be as bright as everyone else. We all encounter pain that shapes the story we have in our minds about ourselves, others, and even God. When trauma goes untreated, we subconsciously find ways to cope with it. It can manifest in things like people pleasing, insecurity, workaholism, fear of being close in relationships, addiction, anger, depression, anxiety, etc. We can end up stuck in patterns that leave us feeling insecure and exhausted or like something is missing. But Jesus came to give us so much more: healing and wholeness.

In John 5, Jesus asks a critical question to a crippled man: ‘Do you want to be well?” I often discuss this question in my Emotional Recovery Clinic because many of us have been crippled by trauma. We seek places to reassure us of our worth when we have unhealed trauma. I saw this first-hand in my own life. me, I became what I call a “Right Fighter.” Somewhere along the way, I equated being right with being worthy of love. I would fight tooth and nail to prove I was right because it was about my worth, and I felt like it was on the line. When I began to recognize and correct this belief with the truth that I was already worthy of love, it freed me from the need to be correct. My truth is: “I am enough, even if I make a mistake and get it wrong. I am enough, even if someone decides to reject me. I’m enough because I am a child of the Most-High, fearfully and wonderfully made in His image.”My inner healing changed how I related to people—especially my husband. It created an opportunity for positive change in our relationship. Wellness disrupts dysfunction. As we process and heal our trauma, we can release the old behaviors we used to reassure ourselves about our worth. We can experience more peace in ourselves— even if there’s disagreement in the relationship. Our emotions can be more steady—even if someone else’s isn’t. When we choose wellness, we begin to shift, and when we pivot, the relationships in our life are forced to change. Even if other people decide not to get healthy. We can stay secure because we know the source of our worth.

When we choose wellness, others can rise to a new level of health in the relationship. You can’t force someone to change but you can take responsibility for your healing. Choosing to heal is a gift you give to yourself. Healing takes work, but a future of freedom and wholeness is worth it. If you’re looking for a way to move out of trauma and into wellness, I’d love for you to join me on a personal journey of healing and recovery at one of our Emotional Recovery Clinics. It’s an opportunity to check out everyday life’s emotional stressors and learn practical tools for healing trauma. It’s a powerful experience designed to give you valuable tools to walk out on a journey of health and wholeness in your spirit, soul, and body! EXERCISES FOR SPRING By J’Que Ellis 54

W thinking.

e all know that regular exercise is associated with weight control, reduced risk of disease, improved mental health and sharp

But what you may not know is that exercising outdoors has even more wonderful perks that include: Improving self-esteem: Exercising while soaking up the sun and breathing fresh air has been shown to improve mood because sun exposure increases your body’s production of vitamin D which is linked to better mental health. Saving time and money: Since outdoor activities only require your body and a place to exercise, it doesn’t cost anything and you can workout pretty much anywhere. Motivation Renewed: Sometimes you just need a break from doing the same routine, and this is the perfect season to get outdoors and try something different! Below you will find,

My Top 10 Favorite Outdoor Excercises: Perform each exercise for 45 seconds, then take 15 seconds to rest and/or transition to the next move. Complete 4 rounds. Bodyweight Squat: push your glutes back and bend your knees to lower into a squat, going as low as you comfortably can while consciously driving your knees outward. Return to the start. Lateral Shift Bow and Arrow: stand with your feet hip-width apart. Step back 45 degrees on the di- agonal with your right foot and stretch the band apart as if shooting a bow and arrow. Return to the center and then continue, alternating sides. Side-Step Squat: stand with your feet hip-width apart, toes forward. Lower into a squat so your glutes are just below the level of your knees, and hold here as you step 10 times in each direction. Alternating Arm Plank: assume a high plank with your shoulders over your wrists and your head, hips and heels aligned. Keeping your feet in place, step your right hand out to the side and place it firmly on the floor. Pause for one count, then return to center. Continue, alternating sides.

Squat Arabesque: stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, toes turned out slightly. Squat down to parallel, and as you rise, extend your right leg straight behind you, keeping it low. Replace your leg and then continue alternating sides. Perform each move for 30 seconds with high intensity, followed by 10 seconds of rest. Complete 4 rounds. Speedskater: stand with your feet hip-width apart and push your hips back to load your posterior chain, back straight. Stay low as you spring laterally to the right, landing on your right foot, swinging your arms to the right, and crossing the left behind you on a diagonal. Continue alternating sides. High Skip: skip across a field or down a sidewalk or street. With each step, leap as high into the air as you can, driving your knee up and reaching as high as you can with your opposite arm. Go for height rather than distance. Scissor Lunge: stand with your feet in a wide lunge, with your right leg forward, right knee over your toes, and your knees and hips at 90-degree angles. Explode into the air, using your arms to help generate momentum, and switch lead legs so you land with your left leg forward and your right leg back. Land softly and repeat right away. Mountain Climber: get into the plank with your head, hips, and heels aligned and your hands directly underneath your shoulders. Keep your hips stable as you alternately drive your kn Jump Rope: go old school, find some space and jump rope to get your heart rate up. But always be sure to nurture your knees and listen to your body. Remember to consult with your doctor before starting any exercise program. Safety is always most imimportant. Outdoor workouts do carry an element of risk due to weather conditions, trail, track, and environmental instability, and dangers of traffic or unsafe areas. Consistency is the key to any successful fitness plan to keep seeing results and continue building a healthy body and strong muscles, it’s essential to mix up your workout from time to time Exercising outdoors is a great way to switch it up. Be encouraged to take advantage of being able to work out outside. Breathe that fresh air, soak up the gorgeous views, and be grateful for your ability to move your body.

3 WAYS TO PREVENT BURNOUT Burnout in high-achieving women often has some component of negative internalized messaging around rest. Let’s rewire negative messaging with the following affirmation: “I am a divine being worthy of rest. I have the power to overcome my doubts and fears to overcome burnout. I am grounded, centered, and stable. I take care of the future by taking care of this present moment.” - Antonia Rashida, Affirmation Coach. Burnout is a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by prolonged stress. It is a common problem among individuals who work in high-stress environments, such as healthcare professionals, teachers, and business executives; however, women of all professions, including entrepreneurs, experience burnout. This exhaustion can often go unaddressed in high-achieving women used to maintaining order in every area of their lives. Burnout can lead to many negative consequences, including decreased productivity, increased absenteeism, and a decline in overall well-being. Here are three evidence-based strategies to beat burnout from Dr. Franita Ware. Dr. Ware is an Educator, Radical Self Care Workshop Facilitator, and expert consultant for Rest 2 Reset, an anti-hustle burnout disruption program. “Radical Self-Care is the intentional and consistent implementation of self-care strategies. You may focus on “one small action” to build the skills to challenge larger goals, but starting and being consistent creates ongoing health improvement and effectively beats burnout. What I love about Radical Self-Care is that everything I’ve learned and taught others is grounded in spirituality and verified through science.” Franita Ware, PhD

56

Prioritize self-care: One of the most effective ways to beat burnout is to prioritize self-care. This means taking care of yourself physically, mentally, or emotionally. It can involve activities such as exercise, meditation, spending time with loved ones, and engaging in hobbies or interests outside of work. Prioritizing self-care can help you to manage stress, improve your mood, and maintain a positive outlook. Make it simple! Implementing one strategy creates healing which makes it easier to see results and continue to add new strategies.

Get enough sunlight. - Each day, spend time in the sun for 10-20 minutes to reset your circadian rhythm. It will improve both your sleep and energy levels! Bonus: You’ll get a healthy dose of Vitamin D. (Habermanlab.com)

L I V E A F F I R M E D ● VO L 2

Prioritize mindful breathing. - Activity: Exhale the fear that you must prove how brilliant you are/what you’re tired of holding. Inhale joy, peace, calm, love, and relaxation

Set boundaries: Another way to beat burnout is to set boundaries and learn to say no. It is important to set limits on your workload and avoid overcommitting yourself. This can help you to manage your time more effectively and reduce stress. It is also important to set boundaries with coworkers, clients, or customers who may be demanding or difficult to work with. Learning to say no can be challenging, but it is crucial to preventing burnout.

Seek support: Finally, seeking support when feeling overwhelmed or burned out is important. This can involve talking to a trusted friend or family member, seeking counseling or therapy, or joining a support group. If you cannot find your desired community, you may need to create it! If you feel uncomfortable communicating with your employer or supervisor about your burnout, seek safe support outside the workplace. This discomfort may also indicate that it is time to pivot into a space where you feel more supported. Community resources include:

HOW TO BE FRIENDS IN A HARD SEASON WITH

YOUR SPOUSE

By Toya Poplar

arriage can get rough. Even the most devoted wife will occasionally find herself influenced by Petty Betty. If you have never been tempted to respond in a childish way, keep on living, Sis. Mrs. Betty will eventually knock, and when she does, you will be coaxed to welcome her in. But here’s the problem with being a petty wife, petty wives lead petty lives. (Proverbs 14:1) The antidote to petty is pursuit. No matter the source of frustration, pursuing friendship is pivotal. Pursuing friendship can prevent pettiness, and pursuing pettiness can prevent couples from being friends. If you don’t be- believe me, ask any healthy married couple what’s the key to their contentment. They will likely say, “We’re friends.” Friendship is a greater adhesive than love. If you’ve ever heard someone who is divorced speak about their ex, they will likely say something like, “ I will always love them. I just don’t like them.” Consider your own past relationships. You likely don’t wish them any harm, and you just don’t consider them a good friend.

58

L I V E A F F I R M E D ● VO L 2

How to Pursue Friendship in the Midst of Petty: Know yourself. know your spouse, and most importantly, know God. Knowing yourself makes it easier to carefront hard situations and have difficult conversations. Knowing your spouse makes it easier to be one. No one should know you or your spouse like you know each other. Knowing God allows you to make God known to others through the way you love one another. People perish for lack of knowledge, and marriages die from lack of understanding. Heal. God created the first wife out of a rib. Ribs protect vital organs. Ever heard a husband say, “She’s my heart.”? Or “She’s the air that I breathe.”? Will you be the wife who is a breath of fresh air or one who knocks the wind out of your man? Do your actions make his heart skip a beat or make his blood boil? Injury from a fractured rib causes severe pain. Once you become a wife, your wounds don’t just hurt you, and they hurt him too. Build Wealth. With every transaction, you are either making a deposit or a withdrawal. If you have difficulty in one area, it should come as no surprise that it can cause a disruption in another. A rule of thumb for building wealth is to make more deposits than you withdraw and spend less than you earn. Far too many married couples operate in a deficit and found themselves scratching their head, wondering why they are on the losing end. Make emotional and financial deposits through making “petty prevention” deposits. (PPD) (PPD) position you to experience kindness in the presence of conflict intimacy over irritation and contentment instead of contempt blessings in lieu of bankruptcy No one wants to live with a person they don’t like. Or worse yet, someone who is intentionally rude, mean-spirited, or blows everything out of proportion. Take a look at the word FRIEND. When you isolate the “I,” it highlights the END. If you deter- mined to live out your marriage vows, vow to be friends. And say no to Petty Betty when she knocks at your door.

"Pursuing friendship can prevent pettiness and pursuing pettiness can prevent couples from being friends. If you don’t be-lieve me, ask any healthy married couple what’s the key to their contentment. They will likely say, “We’re friends.”

4 KEYS TO THRIFTING SPRING HAS SPRUNG….SO GET THRIFTING

Have you wanted to bargain shop or thrift? Have you seen others find amazing deals and items while thrifting? Is thrifting overwhelming because you don’t know where to begin? If so, here are a few tips to get you started and make it a fun adventure.

SHOP OFTEN AND BE PATIENT Thrift stores constantly get new donations. Inventory is typically added multiple times a day. You can go into a store one day and return the next day, and there is a whole new section of items throughout the store. Make sure to shop in all areas of the store. This is key because sometimes items are mislabeled and are in the wrong section. You may find a woman’s shirt in the little girl’s area. Also, sometimes people change their mind about an item and leave it in the wrong section. Be sure to check the boards and signs at the entrance. Some stores offer discounts on colored tags. ALWAYS check the return rack by the dressing room. It’s typically a win.

TAKE YOUR TIME Thrift shopping is rarely a 20-minute trip. DON’T RUSH. Give yourself at least an hour. It takes time and effort to find the best deals and unique items. Bring your headphones/earbuds to listen to good music as you shop. It helps to get you in the mindset! The saying “Patience is a virtue” is never more accurate than when it comes to thrifting.

HAVE A PLAN AND AN OPEN MIND Thrifting is a great way to experiment with fashion and discover new looks. Have an idea of what you are looking for before you start browsing. This will help you stay focused and save time. Creating a Pinterest board for inspiration and outfit ideas is. Keep an open mind and be willing to try new styles or items that you wouldn’t normally consider.

EXAMINE EVERYTHING Pay attention to detail. Although the thrift store can is filled with tons of items, these items vary in condition. You might find a quality brand item, but it is in poor condition. I suggest passing on it. When you find a clothing item you like, check it for holes, tears (especially near the seams), and stains. Try the item on if possible, test electronics before purchasing to see if they work, and lastly, check if an item is missing parts. HAPPY THRIFTING!!

Get Snatched waistlin for

SUMMER By J' Que Ellis

S

tubborn fat deposits on your waistline and dull skin can impact your self-image, dress size, and health. When you have concerns about your midsection, you may be tempted to try things like a flat stomach diet or a slim waist big booty diet. Unfortunately, that’s not quite how it works. Despite what many diet claims, you don’t get to pick and choose where you drop weight by eating certain foods. When you lose fat, it comes from all over your body, not in one particular area. But what you eat can support your efforts for a smaller waist and beautiful skin. Foods rich in an-

Asparagus: Asparagus is considered a SUPERFOOD, and it’s for a good reason. Each spear is packed full of vitamins A, B-complex, C, and E and contains high levels of skin-clearing zinc and potassium, which assist in removing excess fluids from the body. Asparagus has long been used to treat inflammations such as arthritis and rheumatism.

tioxidants, vitamins, and other nutrients can have surprising, glow-up-worthy effects on your waistline and complexion. Focus your dieting efforts on eating plenty of the RIGHT foods. Filling your diet with fresh, nutritious, low-calorie foods is the best way to transform your body and skin. Fresh produce contains essential micronutrients and fiber to keep your digestion healthy. Eat plenty of these fresh, seasonal, green vegetables, berries, and fruits. Eat these superfoods to achieve your summer body goals and get that fil- ter-free skin. Aim for 3 - 5 servings daily.

.Flax seeds: Flax seeds are not only a must for anyone looking to get a flat belly, but they are also ideal for preventing wrinkles. With high levels of fiber, these seeds will keep your digestive system in good health and help reduce belly bloat. Flax seeds contain lignans and antioxidants that help prevent fine lines and wrinkles on the face. The inherent quality of the flax seeds also helps in keeping the skin tight and lessen sagging with age. Sprinkle flaxseeds over your oatmeal, smoothies, and salads.

Broccoli: Apart from containing almost ALL of the VITAMINS, there is one property broccoli possesses that other green veggies lack; Alpha lipoic, which is a naturally-occurring substance that prevents collagen in the body from hardening, which causes cellulite. Get your fill by including three or four weekly steamed portions in your meals. Broccoli also contains carotenoids, a natural plant compound that can help stimulate fat burning and thereby.

Salmon: The quickest way to achieve a glowy complexion is to ensure your skin is well moisturized. But things like indoor heat or dry outdoor air can suck all the moisture out of our skin. Incorporate more salmon into your diet to regain the internal hydration you need. The fish contains healthy omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which nourish your skin from the inside out.

Green Tea: Green tea has been proven to aid weight loss by speeding up the metabolism, inhibiting fat absorption, and aiding glucose regulation. This is not because of the caffeine it contains but is instead due to the high concentration of natural antioxidants called catechin polyphenols. Green Tea’s antioxidants start to degrade as it cools, so drink it while it’s hot.

Spinach: If you’re looking to improve the appearance of cellulite, spinach is brilliant. It is high in vitamin A, which can help to reduce fatty deposits under the skin because it aids the production of collagen – a protein that strengthens, smooths, and plumps. Plus, the water in greens penetrates cell membranes— which makes for plumper and less wrinkled skin.

Blueberries: Overall health is essential to maintaining a high metabolic rate, so I recommend eating blueberries. Their deep pigmentation hints at their high antioxidant content. Not only are they full of beauty-boosting antioxidants, but they’re packed with fiber, too – essential for staving off hunger pains and regulating insulin production.

Alfalfa Sprouts: Tiny but mighty, each stringy sprout is packed with valuable, skin-clearing nutrients such as calcium, folic acid, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, silicon, sodium, and zinc among others, as well as supplying a full range of vitamins A, B complex, C, E, and K. The vitamins in these sprouts can help stimulate metabolism, increasing energy levels and burning fat faster. While you shouldn’t eat too many alfalfa sprouts due to potential toxicity, daily consumption in your salads can help to curb hunger pains.

Cucumber: This hydrating veggie is a natural diuretic, which makes it great for removing water weight, a factor in belly bloat. Cucumbers are also fabulous fat burners. Not only do their seeds contain stimulant properties, which can boost metabolic rates, but they are also high in Sulphur and Silicone, which can help the body’s natural fat-burning process.

Mushrooms: Low levels of vitamin D are connected to abdominal obesity. Mushrooms are a good source of vitamin D. They are also low in calories, high in protein and water content, extremely versatile, and extremely delicious. You can easily prepare mushroom soup or add them to salads and sandwiches to make a delicious lunch or dinner without worrying about calories.

Almonds: Not only are almonds packed full of skin-boosting vitamin E and protein, but their high fiber content stops you from feeling hungry. They are good sources of nutrients for vegetarians to burn fat and are also rich in omega-3 fatty acids that increase energy and metabolism. Aside from the fact that almonds are one of our favorite nuts, they help regulate blood sugar levels and contain components that help cut cholesterol. Try to avoid salted almonds, though, and avoid marzipan!

Watermelon: This popular summer fruit is refreshing thanks to its dense water content. Snacking on watermelon is an excellent way to regulate salt levels and flush out the excess water you may be holding onto due to dehydration (a.k.a. bloat). Cut up a few refrigerated slices and eat your heart out.

When putting together your summer body diet, be inventive. You don’t have to have it plain! When a snack attack hits, reach for an apple or baby carrots instead of a cookie! Don’t think of it as having to avoid the treat; think of it as having to fill your daily fruit and vegetable quota. Try some blueberries and strawberries with Greek yogurt and honey or sliced apples and peanut butter. There are endless combinations, and it’s a great way of mixing it so you don’t get nutritionally bored. While diet is important for a sexy shape and dazzling skin, it’s not the only factor. Incorporating physical activity, rest, and stress management into your daily routine can achieve a snatched waist and radiant skin! 66

How to Include YOUR KIDS IN YOUR BUSINESS VENTURES By Camil Williams

’m Camil Williams, owner of Camil Creates. I am a beauty entrepreneur, social media manager, & content creator. I am a single mother of three boys: Carson, 11; Harvey, 6; & Noah, 1. As a content creator and beauty entrepreneur, involving your kids in your work can be a rewarding experience for you and your children. Not only can it be a way to spend quality time together, but it can also teach them valuable skills and inspire creativity. Here are some tips for including your kids in your business ventures: • Make it age-appropriate: Consider your child’s age and skill level when deciding how to involve them in your work. Younger children may enjoy helping with simple tasks like organizing supplies or packaging products, while older children may be able to assist with social media management or content creation.

• Encourage creativity: Let your kids share their ideas and perspectives on your work. They may have unique insights that can help improve your content or products. My boys love music & they are all about tech. They get excited when I ask for their input and incorporate some of their ideas. • Set boundaries: Make sure your children understand that your work is still yours, and they must respect your time and space. Set clear boundaries and expectations to avoid any misunderstandings or frustrations. For example, we created a video making “Angel” Eggs, and I needed a few moments to come up with a caption, but all of my boys wanted my attention, so I set my timer for 15 minutes and told them when the timer went off we could get back to fun. If I’m finished or not, I stick to my word. It’s imperative to me that I am a present parent. • Have fun: Most importantly, make it a fun experience for everyone involved. Celebrate small victories and milestones together, and take the time to appreciate the unique bond of working together as a family. You can create lasting memories and inspire a love for entrepreneurship and creativity by including your kids in your business ventures. So why not give it a try?

Florals For Your Home By Terasha Burrell-Noble Spring. The season of starting fresh and starting over. Spring is here. You might be a member of the “we outside” tribe, or you may be like me and took the time over the Winter months to make your home a little oasis to enjoy as your work remotely or entertain your girlfriends for wine down Wednesday. Apart from that oasis for me is flowers. Most people don’t want to bring their work home, but since I see flowers as more of my passion which I get to express through business, I still love to have flowers all around my home. Besides the plants in my office, which make my workspace aesthetically pleasing and naturally filter toxins, did you know flowers also have significant health benefits? I’m talking about your physical and mental health, people. These are a few of my favorite spring flowers and their benefits: • Flowering Branches - Cherry Blossoms, Bradford Pears, and Forsythia are some of my favorite flowering branches. The buds on these flowering trees have been dormant through Winter and are awaiting a few weeks of warm weather for their blooms to grow. If you have one of these trees in your backyard, snip off a few branches, put them in water in your home, and see how much you enjoy watching them bloom. • Garden Roses - My motto to my clients is, “You don’t hate roses. You just haven’t gotten garden roses.” Garden roses are more distinct than your standard rose with ruffled petals and are grown for their scent. You might see these labeled as “Country Roses” at Trader Joe’s. If you want to add a quick Spring facelift to your place, arrange 24 stems in a vase for your nightstand or foyer table. These types of flowers in my spring home help promote creativity due to their beauty, aroma, and uniqueness of the bloom. What else do I consider? The colors. If you are intentional in the color choice, flowers help enhance your emotional health. Blue flowers promote calm, yellow helps you to feel happy, and white flowers help you feel reminiscent Here’s a pro tip: put flowers in your home that make you feel happy and at peace. Be sure to post your flowers and tag @liveaffirmedmagazine and @madebeautifulfloral_ so we can see how you’ve added this beauty to your home this Spring.

LIES WE TELL OURSELVES THAT HINDER PROGRESS by Kendra Newman Nelson

Many of us are seeking to build multiple streams of income. These are four self-sabotaging thoughts that could be holding you back.

ONE - “IT’S TOO LATE FOR ME.” Wouldn’t it be better to make the necessary adjustments to live on your terms? It’s not too late to follow your heart if you're still breathing. Moses was 80 years old when he started carrying out his life’s purpose; everything else until that moment was just an experience to prepare him for the Exodus. Marla Gibbs was 44 years old when she landed her big break as the housekeeper for The Jeffersons, where she played the role of Florence on the TV series. Examples of people who’ve met with success later in life are endless and all around us. They can be found in the stories of women like Vera Wang and Toni Morrison. Trust me; it’s not too late for you. Many of us only get clear about what we truly want for ourselves once we’ve had experience with what we don’t like. Use negative experiences as the fuel needed to determine what you want.

TWO- “I DON’T HAVE THE PROPER CREDENTIALS.” Brilliant women visit me to monetize their expertise and launch new businesses offering irresistible marketready products and services. Before stepping into their magnificence, they must release the notion that a degree, certificate, or years of experience in their new area of interest is needed before they can begin or charge their worth. Here is an affirmation I want to share with you, “My expertise has made fortunes for my employers. Now I will use it to create wealth for myself.”

THREE - “I’M NOT GOOD ENOUGH.” Your belief that you aren’t good enough means you are more than likely comparing yourself and your ability to someone else’s. When we don’t know all the details about people or situations, it’s human nature to fill in the gaps with what we think could be true. Now ask yourself, “What am I telling myself about this person and her ability because I’m not privy to their whole story? Are they more worthy of success than me? Why do I believe that to be true?” What you possess is more than enough. Value it by putting it to work for yourself. The more you work with what you have, the better you’ll become. Stop waiting until things are perfect before you start showing up for yourself. The tools that you already have can get you on the road to where you desire to be. Blossoming into your full potential can only occur if you step out and begin right where you are.

FOUR - “WHAT WILL PEOPLE THINK?” We make up stories about what people may say and believe about us if we dare to follow our dreams and live, work, and play on our terms. Living your life according to popular opinion will undoubtedly lead to many regrets and a life less fulfilled. When it comes to accomplishing your lifestyle, legacy, livelihood, or dreams, the weight of other people’s opinions may occasionally start to show up in your thinking. When it does, it’s healthy to stop and ask yourself, “ Does what I believe they think about me truly matter? Or is this a lie or fear holding me back?”. In those moments, it’s best to affirm yourself and keep making strides to make your dream a reality.

What advice do you have for new mothers who are trying to balance entrepreneurship and parenting? For new mothers balancing entrepreneurship and parenting, it can be challenging, but it is very possible. The first thing I would advise is to give yourself grace. This is new territory, and you’re learning as you go. You’re taking on a whole new life and identity. Navigating life as a new mother can feel like an uphill battle. And then add, on top of that, the demands of entrepreneurship. It can quickly and easily become overwhelming. Two things that helped me in my journey tremendously, once I gave myself grace, were to manage my expectations and ask for help. Managing expectations looked like realistically evaluating how much work I could get done in a day, a week, etc. I had to realize that my mental, energetic, and time capacity simply did not allow me to work in the same way that I did pre-baby. I had to accept that and be ok with it. With this also came the realization that just because I couldn’t work like I used to, it did not mean that work would not get done. Enlisting help wherever you can, in both home and business, can free you from the weight of responsibilities while things continue to function. As an entrepreneur, how did you have to pivot once you became a mother and wife? Once I became a mother and wife, I had to pivot as an entrepreneur. My desire and belief had always been to put family first. I had to live by that belief now that I had a family. This meant setting boundaries with my work times. I worked less in the evening and on weekends. I also planned business activities around life activities and not the other way around. Another pivot I made was to explore different business models besides 1:1. I did not want my impact to decrease with my decreasing working hours, so I explored different options for my business. What is the inspiration behind MOM CEO? The inspiration behind The Mom CEO Suite came as I entered motherhood as an entrepreneur. I saw the need for community at this intersection and wanted to provide that safe space of community for other moms in business. But I also wanted to provide them with the operational support that would allow them the freedom to put family first without their business suffering. After years of experience in business operations, I developed The Mom CEO Freedom Framework as the solution for this. In what ways have you evolved since first starting in business in 2016? Since starting business in 2016, besides learning different skills and implementing different strategies, there has been constant evolution. I have unsubscribed from the hustle culture and embraced alignment and ease. I have stopped following every trend and learned to show up authentically as myself in ways that felt good to me. I’ve learned to be ok with pivoting in the business, as much as necessary, to continue growing a business I love. Ultimately, I have embraced doing business on my terms and in a way where it fits into my desired lifestyle.

Dearest Reader, As you know, mental health has become a buzzword. It is trending more than ever, and many large companies offer a solid online presence and services. While this is great from an advocacy perspective and for normalizing psychological services, let’s zoom in closer and make mental health personal for you. According to the World Health Organization (2022), mental health is a state of well-being that enables individuals to cope with life stressors, realize their abilities, learn, work, and contribute to society/community. WHO describes mental health as a fundamental need and positive value essential to wellness, allowing individuals to shape their life and world. Let’s take a more in-depth and personal look at how this definition is relevant and applicable. You may have never thought to assess your life by this description of mental health, but answering these questions can help you to gauge your level of current functioning relative to your mental and emotional health. Ask yourself these questions: 1. How am I coping with the stressors of life? 2. How do I view myself and my abilities? 3. Can I become the best version of myself, reaching my full potential and power? 4. How do I view and contribute to society and the community? 5. Based on my well-being, how have I shaped my life and world? If you desire to live the best life you envision, it will require positive mental health to deal with life stressors. We know that advancement, promotion, expansion, and elevation are all admirable to desire, but these accomplishments are NOT always obtained or manifested easily without accompanying stressors. The day-to-day life of working, meeting personal obligations, staying physically healthy, and caring for yourself and others you are responsible for does not always happen smoothly or without challenges. You must be mentally well enough to cope with shaping your life and world in a way that yields satisfaction, success, autonomy, and every other positive attribute you desire. You must be mentally and emotionally healthy enough to cope, but first, you must realize your abilities to learn, work and produce! This is called Self- Actualization in the field of psychology. We’ve all heard the saying, If you believe you can, you can, and if you think you can’t, you can’t. Or you must see it before you seize it. In short, your ability to live well all begins with mental wellness. Let me encourage you by noting that all stress is not bad. However, in your personal assessment of your mental health, you should gauge how often and how intense stress is present in your life. If you feel stuck, defeated, overwhelmed, unproductive, dissatisfied, powerless, have a negative outlook concerning your life or future, or have a low self-image, chances are you need to address your mental health. Although mental health is trending and has become a buzzword, there is still a significant stigma and a large gap between actual therapeutic practices for most individuals. As it is now Spring, what better way to celebrate a new season of beautiful blooming growth than to address dark and hidden places in your own life that may be hindering you from blooming, blossoming and growing into a better version of yourself? As you spring into bettering your mental health, here are some thoughtful quotes to help. “ Don’t let the tall weeds cast a shadow on the beautiful flowers in your garden.” -Steve Maraboli “ Every flower is a soul blossoming in nature.” -Gerard De Nerval “ Don’t wait for someone to bring you flowers, plant your garden and decorate your soul.” -Luther Burbank Schedule an appointment today with a Licensed Therapist for a mental health assessment. My Fertility Journey By Sherelle Gilbert

“We revisited treatment with a fertility doctor in 2019, and that summer, I had surgery that resulted in a bilateral salpingectomy, which is the removal of both tubes. The doctor found endometriosis that damaged my tubes. Because of the removal of my tubes, IVF would be my only option for conceiving.”

I

nfertility is not something that is talked about in the black community. It's a taboo topic that many feel ashamed to discuss or even admit they are experiencing. My husband and I started trying to conceive in 2016. After a year of trying with no success, in 2017, my doctor insisted that we get a test- ed for potential fertility challenges. After many tests and follow-up appointments, I was diagnosed with Diminished Ovarian Reserve and told there was a possibility I had endometriosis. My husband and I

were referred to a fertility doctor, but decided to take a break before diving into fertility treatment as it was so overwhelming. We revisited treatment with a fertility doctor in 2019, and that summer, I had surgery that resulted in a bilateral salpingectomy, which is the removal of both tubes. The doctor found endometriosis that damaged my tubes. Because of the removal of my tubes, IVF would be my only option for conceiving.

Infertility can be a lonely journey. I remember searching YouTube and Instagram for black women and women of color who were sharing their IVF journeys and finding maybe one or two at the time. God told me I needed to share my journey because there were others out there like me who were suffering in silence. I started IVF in January of 2020, and we were blessed with one healthy embryo. By the time I was ready for the transfer of our baby girl's embryo, I had two additional surgeries - one for fibroids and one for scar tissue. We finally had our embryo transfer in September of 2020, but unfortunately, that ended in miscarriage. This was devastating, to say the least. I realized we also don't talk about miscarriage, and this was something I decided to share on my platforms for healing and awareness. In January 2021, we were back to square one - starting all over again with IVF. This time we decided to pursue the donor egg route because of my DOR diagnosis. Our second embryo transfer was in August of 2021. We were so hopeful and optimistic. Everything had fallen into place and seemed to be the perfect recipe for a great miracle. With this pregnancy, we had gotten further than the first. We went in for an ultrasound, and we saw not one but two heartbeats! We couldn't believe that our embryo split and we were having twins! A week later, we went in for our second ultrasound, but this time, there were no heartbeats. The nurse confirmed that neither baby had a heartbeat, and we were dealing with devastating news all over again - another miscarriage.

July of 2022, we started a new cycle with a new doctor in preparation for our third embryo transfer. Unfortunately, the transfer failed and I was not pregnant. This was our 4th little baby lost. Although I’ve experienced so much loss, I have not lost hope. I have found so much strength in sharing my story and connecting with women who are also on this journey. Infertility is a medical diagnosis and is not something to be ashamed of or walk through alone. I’m thankful to use my platform to be a voice and a light in the infertility awareness community and be a support to women on this journey.

By Erin Elise Enyinda

s a woman who has put soul work and self-care at the fore- front for the past 12 years, there is one thing that I know for certain, and that is healing isn’t easy. However, it has been the most worthwhile journey of my life. I remember wondering when the day would come that I would “arrive.” There’s no other way to put it, but there was a wondering of when I would meet the me that I knew that I could be, and the me that I ached to become at some of the lowest and most critical moments of my life thus far. One thing I wish I had known earlier on my path of healing and self-development was that I would meet various versions of myself throughout my lifetime as I healed and became the woman God created me to be. Some versions of me would be gaining confidence, some would be more introverted and reflective, some would be bold and audacious and one day they would all mesh together into one cumulative pot of awesome Erin-ness and viola. Looking back, I can see that every version of me that walked through healing was who God signed off on, because ultimately, he knew I would arrive at a place within myself that was so beautiful and wildly free. I have realized that often times we rush to hurry up and “arrive” or get the desired outcome. However, there are so many bits and pieces along the way that are so necessary to build who we are as a whole. In hindsight, I cherish every version of me, even when I made poor decisions, when I didn’t see my value, when my voice trembled to share my needs, and when I found the courage to bet on myself and who God created me to be. When we can walk through the awkwardness of learning ourselves on a deeper level, addressing our pain points, and visu- alizing who we know that we can be, in our minds, something new and beautiful is birthed. We are going through the necessary process to actualize our highest selves. The most beautiful part of inner definition I have learned is every bit of me was required to become who I am now. So I cheer for every version of me. The woman that is standing before me overcame domestic violence, divorce, low self-esteem, betrayal, ADHD, and the list goes on. Yet, she never stopped, and she never gave up. That is the piece I want you to part with. No matter where we are in our lives, there is always a new day. As long as we never give up and believe what it is that God says about us, every single part of our lives, personality, and journey will produce something so unique and beautiful that it is awe-inspiring. The internal work is not in vain. May you never give up on you. May you always know that each version of you is ultimately beautiful, and there will be a day that you wake up and realize that it was all worth it.
