Academic Progress & Success
Students will cultivate skills such as time management, study habits, and self-care that promote academic success through multifaceted curricular and co-curricular programs. Students will build a knowledge base to self-register each semester based on advising guidance from Success Coaches. Through consultation with their Success Coach, students will be able to decipher their personal interests, strengths, values, and skills to inform their academic and career paths. STUDENT LIFE
Student Affairs continued to implement strategies to create a vibrant and distinctive student experience. The 2019–2020 academic year saw the addition of new student spaces, new student organizations, and programs and initiatives aimed to increase overall student engagement. The COVID-19 pandemic altered spring 2020 engagement plans; however, Student Affairs shifted to a virtual setting to continue serving students.

• Introduced the Tradition Tuesday campaign in fall 2019 to bolster pride in the new University brand
• Over 600 students participated in Cultural Explosion to celebrate the diversity of the LIU community
• Midnight Madness was moved to the Brooklyn Campus to coincide with Men’s and Women’s Basketball; 847 students from all campuses attended
• Various student spaces were opened at the start of the academic year across all campuses, including state-of-the-art Esports Arenas, The Cove student lounge, Bluefit Peloton Studio, and redesigned student-run businesses

Highlights
• Over 200 LIU students attended the Long Island Heart Walk in September 2019
• The LIU Cares Month of Service schedule was expanded and moved to March
• Virtual LIU Cares Week was held April 13–19 where students celebrated healthcare workers and first responders, made protective masks, and participated in a virtual Relay for Life
• Circle K International, the largest college service organization in the world, was chartered at the Brooklyn Campus in fall 2019
RESIDENCE LIFE
During the 2019–2020 year, 1,433 resident students called Long Island University home, residing in 10 residence halls. Select students resided in living communities based on academic cohorts, including Dean’s Scholars and Honors College students. LIU residence halls remained open throughout the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

• The Brooklyn Campus opened its inaugural First-Year Student Housing Community in Connolly Hall

• The Residential Fitness Center opened at the Post Campus in September 2019 for all residents
• Resident Assistants facilitated 145 events across all campuses this academic year
NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION
LIU welcomed 1,276 first-year students in the Class of 2023 as the inaugural cohort of Shark Nation. Students enjoyed the unveiling of new colors, a new mascot, and several student spaces redesigned to represent our new Shark identity.

CAREER SUCCESS
Career readiness and job placement is at the forefront of student’s minds when they enter the University. Student Affairs plays a vital role in ensuring students have access to career resources and support. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, career events were moved to a virtual format in the spring 2020 semester.

COMMENCEMENT
The Class of 2020 Commencement Ceremonies were held virtually in a live ceremony on May 20, 2020, that included the awarding of several honorary degrees, and keynote speakers. Each graduate was recognized by name in a personalized slide.

STUDENT AFFAIRS ASSESSMENT
The Division of Student Affairs Assessment Steering Committee conducted several assessments during the 2019–2020 academic year regarding the overall student experience, satisfaction with Enrollment services and LIU Promise customer service, and experiential surveys for residential students and new student orientation participants. By
• 91% of residents felt safe in their residence hall; 84% believed living on campus was an important aspect of the LIU social experience
• 90% of fraternity and sorority life members intended on remaining involved with their organization post-graduation
• 73% of students had excellent or good experiences working with their success coach; 70% of students either completely or considerably trusted the advice provided by their success coach
• 65% of students participated in at least one event during the year; 22% attended four or more
