VIRTUAL INTERVIEW " ! b o j SKILLS e h t t o g "I "
During the Interview Look straight into the camera when answering questions to give the interviewer your full attention and to come across as engaged. It’s tempting to look at the faces on the screen while you are talking, but it's better to look at the camera. If you need to write notes while others are speaking, try not to look away (or keep it brief).
Be mindful of your body language. Sit up straight to appear attentive and alert. Remember to smile when introducing yourself and meeting others. Nod and remain engaged while others are speaking.
If a technical issue occurs, don’t panic. Most people will be understanding. If you get disconnected, email or call the person who set up the interview right away, and try to reconnect. If there is a major interruption or distraction (like a loud sound or background movement), just acknowledge it, apologize, and move on.
Even though virtual interviews feel different, all of your general interview skills still apply! Know yourself. What skills, values, and qualities do you want to highlight?
Know the position. Be prepared to articulate why you want this position and why you are qualified.
Know the company/organization. Read everything you can find: websites, company literature, LinkedIn bios. Search on Google News to see if any major events have happened recently.
Practice. Rehearse your responses to common questions, and have 2-3 of your own questions ready in advance.
