INTRODUCTION

Welcome to Long Island University (LIU) and the Department of Athletics. The purpose of this Student-Athlete Handbook is to equip you, the student-athlete, with general information to assist you in having the best student-athlete experience possible during your time as an LIU Shark. In addition, this handbook acts as a resource for you to familiarize yourself with important University and NCAA rules and polices. Please thoroughly review the materials contained in this handbook and be aware you have access to resources throughout the University to assist you in a variety of ways. While this handbook serves as an important resource, you should always consult with your coaching staff and athletic administration before making any decisions that may have an adverse effect on your status as a student or a student-athlete. There are a series of NCAA rules that govern the conduct of intercollegiate athletic programs, and not adhering to these rules may jeopardize your eligibility. As a result, it is highly important that you ask before you act.

We wish you the best of luck in your endeavors this year and over your careers as LIU Sharks! It is your responsibility to take advantage of these resources as you create your own path. FERPA NOTICE TO STUDENTS

Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)

Every year, Long Island University informs students of their rights under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, as amended. Long Island University complies with this federal statute which affords students over 18 years of age, or attending a post-secondary institution (“eligible students”) certain rights with respect to their educational records.

These rights include:

1. The right to inspect and review the student’s education records within 45 days of the day the University receives a request for access. Students should submit to the Office of the Registrar written requests that identify the record(s) they wish to inspect. The Office of the Registrar will make arrangements for access and notify the student of the time and place where the records may be inspected. If the records requested are not maintained by the University, the Registrar shall advise the student of that fact. If the records are maintained by another University Official; the Office of the Registrar will advise the student of the correct official to whom the request should be addressed.

2. The right to request the amendment of the student’s education records that the student believes are inaccurate or misleading. Students may ask the Registrar to amend a record that they believe is inaccurate or misleading. They should write the Registrar, clearly identifying the part of the record they want changed, and specify why it is inaccurate or misleading. If the University decides not to amend the record as requested by the student, the University will notify the student of the decision and advise the student of his or her right to a hearing regarding the request for amendment. Additional information regarding the hearing procedures will be provided to the student when notified of the right to a hearing.

3. The right to consent to disclosures of personally identifiable information contained in the student’s education records, except to the extent that FERPA authorizes disclosure without consent. An exception which permits disclosure without consent is disclosure to school officials with legitimate educational interests. A school official is a person employed by the University in an administrative, supervisory, academic or research, or support staff position (including law enforcement unit personnel and health staff); a person or company with whom the University has contracted (such as an attorney, auditor, or collection agent); a person serving on the Long Island University Board of Trustees; or a student serving on an official committee, such as a disciplinary

or grievance FERPA committee; or assisting another school official in performing his or her tasks. A school has a legitimate educational interest if the official needs to review an education record in order to fulfill his or her professional responsibility.

4. In accordance with the Act, the following directory information will be released upon request, unless a written notice to the contrary is received by the Office of the Registrar:

• Name

• Dates of Attendance

• Enrollment Status

• Class

• Major

• Awards

• Honors

• Degrees conferred

• Past and present participation in officially recognized sports and non-curricular activities

• Physical factors (height, weight) of athletes

• Previous educational institutions most recently attended

5. The right to file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education concerning alleged failures by the University to comply with FERPA. LIU STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT

The purpose of the LIU Student Code of Conduct is to set standards of conduct, give notice of expectations and prohibited behavior, and identify the procedures the University may employ to resolve breaches of those standards. The LIU Student Code of Conduct is founded on the principles of respect for oneself, respect for others, respect for property, respect for authority, and honesty.

Until evidence to the contrary is observed, the campus presumes that students are motivated by the desire to improve their capabilities and to help others do so, possess a sense of honor and are trustworthy, and are mature individuals, capable of behaving accordingly. Students who violate the rules and regulations of the LIU campus must expect that appropriate disciplinary action will be taken.

Action involving non-academic misconduct is the responsibility of the Office of the Dean of Students and designated Community Standards officers. The Dean of

Students and Community Standards officers, or other designated officers or officials, at the specific LIU campus may suspend or expel a student under this policy. LIU recognizes that campus disciplinary jurisdiction may extend to off-campus activities. The University has the discretion to exercise jurisdiction over off-campus behavior if it: 1) adversely affects the health, safety, or security of any member of the campus community; or 2) adversely affects the interests of the University.

In determining whether to exercise off-campus jurisdiction, the University will consider the seriousness of the alleged harm, the risk of harm involved, whether the victim(s) are members of the campus community or whether the offcampus conduct is part of a series of actions which occurred both on and off campus.

Students are accountable for adhering to all regulations in the LIU Student Handbook. As noted under item “U”, ‘Violation of University or campus policies’ in “Respect for Authority” below, students must understand that they are subject to “all policies communicated elsewhere in this Handbook, University or campus publications, verbal directives by campus officials or as posted by any department.”

LIU students taking classes at other campuses of Long Island University and students from other campuses of Long Island University who are taking classes at another campus of LIU who are involved in disciplinary matters may be subject to disciplinary sanctions on both campuses. The offices of the Dean of Students at the appropriate campuses shall confer in such instances and determine the appropriate course of action and designate an appropriate Community Standards officer as applicable.

LIU SEXUAL MISCONDUCT

POLICY

Long Island University is committed to creating and maintaining an educational environment free from all forms of sexual misconduct. The broad term “sexual misconduct” includes, but is not limited to, acts of sexual harassment, domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking. Such behaviors are illegal, against University policy, and strictly prohibited. This policy is incorporated into the Student Code of Conduct.

This policy covers all members of the University community – students, faculty and staff – as well as those who interact with members of the University community such as vendors or visitors. The University encourages everyone to report all incidents of discrimination or harassment, regardless of who the offender may be.

Title IX and Article 129B Policy Statement

It is the policy of the University to comply with Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, and Article 129B of the New York Educational Law, both of which prohibit discrimination on the basis of sex (including sexual harassment and sexual violence) in the University’s educational programs and activities, and prohibit retaliation for asserting or otherwise participating in claims of sex discrimination.

Title IX states that:

No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.

Long Island University Students’ Bill of Rights

Long Island University is committed to ensuring that all persons who report an incident of sexual misconduct are provided all options, support, and assistance.

Anyone who has been a victim of, or who has witnessed an incident of, a violation of this policy can file a report to any of the following entities: an employee with the authority to address complaints, including the Title IX Coordinator, Title IX Deputies, and Representatives of the Dean of Students Office; Department of Public Safety; Human Resources; local law enforcement and/or family or civil court.

All reporting individuals of these crimes and violations, regardless of race, color, national origin, religion, creed, age, disability, sex, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, familial status, pregnancy, predisposing genetic characteristics, military status, domestic violence victim status, or criminal conviction, have the following rights, regardless of whether the crime or violation occurs on campus, off campus, or while studying abroad.

All students (and reporting individuals) have the right to:

1. Make a report to local law enforcement and/or state police;

2. Have disclosures of domestic violence, dating violence, stalking, and sexual assault treated seriously;

3. Make a decision about whether or not to disclose a crime or violation and participate in a judicial or conduct process and/or criminal justice process free from pressures by the University;

4. Participate in a process that is fair, impartial, and provides adequate notice and a meaningful opportunity to be heard;

5. Be treated with dignity and to receive from the University courteous, fair, and respectful health care and counseling services, where available;

6. Be free from any suggestion that the reporting individual is at fault when these crimes and violations are committed, or should have acted in a different manner to avoid such crimes or violations;

7. Describe the incident to as few institutional representatives as practicable and not to be required to unnecessarily repeat a description of the incident.

8. Be protected from retaliation by the institution, any student, the accused and/or the respondent, and/or their friends, family and acquaintances within the jurisdiction of the institution;

9. Access to at least one level of appeal of a determination;

10. Be accompanied by an advisor of choice who may assist and advise a reporting individual, accused, or respondent throughout the judicial or conduct process including during all meetings and hearings related to such process; and

11. Exercise civil rights and practice of religion without interference by the investigative, criminal justice, or judicial or conduct process of the University.

Immediate Assistance

University community members should report any incident to the following entities including but not limited to the Title IX Coordinator, Title IX Deputies, administrators, faculty members, or any other responsible employee of the University. It is the duty of all members of the University to notify the following Title IX Coordinator of Title IX Deputies if they are informed of any and all incidents. The campus-specific Title IX Coordinator and Title IX Deputies are able to provide immediate and confidential response in a crisis situation.

In addition, any reporting individual may also contact local police or law enforcement agencies.

Reporting individuals will be provided any and all necessary or requested on-campus or off-campus health care or medical needs. The Title IX Coordinator and/or Title IX Deputies will institute the appropriate steps to ensure the safety and well-being of the reporting individual:

1. Ensure the victim is aware of the options to seek treatment for injuries, preventative treatment for sexually transmitted diseases, and other health services.

2. Discuss the option of seeking medical treatment in order to preserve evidence.

3. Identify where/how to get a rape kit or find a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE).

4. Provide locations, including contact information, for an advocate (e.g., a local rape crisis center, on-campus advocacy program) who can accompany a victim to the hospital or health provider.

A Success Coach is the one point of contact for everything a student needs—from academic and career counseling to campus activities to financial aid.

Success Coach will work with students one-on-one to:

• Help them select the right major

• Find the right scholarships for them

• Construct a financial plan to fund their education

• Introduce them to our vibrant campus life

Students will be paired with a dedicated success coach who matches their academic year and standing. This coach will be there for them through their first and second years, helping to create a personalized success plan that includes academic, personal, and career goals. As students move into their third and fourth years, the focus will shift to professional development and guiding them into the professional world. Graduate and Doctoral students will also have a team of success coaches to support them throughout their academic journey.

Additionally, the Center for Student Success & Coaching offers financial counseling to help students navigate their educational expenses. Whether it’s information on scholarships, grants, loans, or work-study options, we’re

here to assist. Our success coaches are available for one-onone financial aid counseling and can help with payment plan information.

NCAA CONTINUING ACADEMIC ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

To maintain eligibility for intercollegiate athletic competition and athletically related financial aid, each student-athlete must meet several institutional, conference, and NCAA requirements. In general, student athletes must:

• Be enrolled and attend as a full-time student each semester (12+ credits for undergraduate; nine+ credits for graduate);

• Each semester, you must earn six credits of coursework that apply to graduation in your designated academic degree program (Football Only: 9 credits completed during the fall term);

• Earn a minimum of 24 credits of coursework prior to the start of your second year;

• Earn at least 18 credits in your academic degree program every regular academic year (fall and spring semesters);

• Declare a designated program of studies before the third year of enrollment (fifth semester);

• Make sure all of your courses are applicable toward your academic degree program in order to be used for eligibility purposes;

• Beginning with your second year of enrollment, you must meet GPA requirements as indicated below. Your GPA will be certified before the beginning of each academic year. In addition, beginning with your third year of enrollment, you must meet percentage-of-degree requirements as noted in the chart below.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY

As a Division I student-athlete, you are responsible for representing yourself, your team, this university and the conference in the best possible manner. Your academic conduct is monitored by a variety of individuals, including university faculty and staff. It is critical to complete coursework following the athletic department, university, and NCAA guidelines to ensure your eligibility is never at risk.

Under current NCAA legislation, institutions are responsible for the conduct of its employees, and any academic misconduct by those individuals is subject to NCAA investigation if they are associated with providing impermissible assistance to student-athletes. It should be understood by these employees, and student-athletes alike, that the NCAA constitutes unethical conduct and academic misconduct as very serious matters. Individuals are expected to act with honesty and integrity in all academic matters. To ensure understanding of the policies, please review the NCAA’s Academic Misconduct Rules

EXTRA BENEFITS

An extra benefit is any special arrangement by an institutional employee or a representative of the institution’s athletics interests to provide a student-athlete or the student-athlete’s family member or friend a benefit not expressly authorized by NCAA legislation. Receipt of a benefit by student-athletes or their family members

or friends is not a violation of NCAA legislation if it is demonstrated that the same benefit is generally available to the institution’s students or their family members or friends or to a particular segment of the student body (e.g., international students, minority students) determined on a basis unrelated to athletics ability. Some examples of permissible and impermissible extra benefits include:

Reasonable Food and Drinks

An institution may provide the family members of a student-athlete with reasonable food and drinks in conjunction with educational meetings or celebratory events (e.g., senior night) and on an occasional basis for other reasons.

Permissible Travel Expenses Not Related to Practice or Competition

An institution, conference or the NCAA may provide actual and necessary expenses to a student-athlete to represent the institution in noncompetitive events [e.g., goodwill tours, media appearances (see Bylaw 12.5.3), student-athlete advisory committee meetings]. Further, an institution may provide reasonable local transportation to student-athletes on an occasional basis.

Occasional Meals

A student-athlete or the entire team in a sport may receive an occasional family home meal in the locale of the institution on infrequent and special occasions from an institutional staff member. An institutional staff member

may provide reasonable local transportation to studentathletes to attend such meals. A student-athlete or the entire team in a sport may receive an occasional meal from a representative of athletics interests on infrequent and special occasions under the following conditions:

(a) The meal may only be provided in an individual’s home, on campus or at a facility that is regularly used for home competition and may be catered; and

(b) A representative of the institution’s athletics interests may provide reasonable local transportation to studentathletes to attend the meal function only if the meal function is at the home of that representative.

Other Prohibited Benefits.

An institutional employee or representative of the institution’s athletics interests may not provide a studentathlete with extra benefits or services, including but not limited to:

a) A loan of money;

b) A guarantee of bond;

c) The use of an automobile;

d) Transportation (e.g., a ride home with a coach), except as permitted in Bylaw 16.9.1, even if the student-athlete reimburses the institution or the staff member for the appropriate amount of the gas or expense; or

e) Signing or cosigning a note with an outside agency to arrange a loan.

TRANSFERRING & OTHER NCAA ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION

SEASONS OF COMPETITION

Division I five-year clock: Division I student-athletes have five-calendar years in which to play four seasons of competition. Your five-year clock starts from the beginning of the semester in which you first register for a minimum full-time program of studies at any college. Thereafter, your clock continues even if you spend an academic year in residence as a result of transferring, decide to redshirt, do not attend school for a term or terms after initial enrollment or if you enroll part-time during your college career.

Season of competition: Division I student-athletes are allowed to compete for four seasons in one sport. Any competition, regardless of time, during a season in an intercollegiate sport shall be counted as a season of competition in that sport.

Athletic Redshirt: In Division I, redshirting refers to someone who is enrolled full-time at a school but does not compete for an entire academic year for the purpose of saving a season of competition. Even though the student is otherwise eligible, a redshirt does not compete in any contests or scrimmages in a given sport for an entire academic year. If you do not compete in a sport the entire academic year, you have not used a season of competition. However, if you compete in any amount of intercollegiate competition in an academic year, you are not considered a redshirt.

INITIAL ELIGIBILITY

Financial aid: Any money you receive from a college or another source, such as outside loans or grants. Financial aid may be based on athletics, financial need or academic achievement.

Recruited Student-Athlete: A recruited student-athlete is a student-athlete who , as a prospective student-athlete was provided an official visit to the institution’s campus, had an arranged, in-person, off-campus encounter with a member of the institution’s coaching staff (including a coach’s arranged, in-person, off-campus encounter with the prospective student-athlete or the prospective studentathlete’s family members) or was issued a National Letter of Intent or a written offer of athletically related financial aid by the institution for a regular academic term.

SCHOOLS

Certifying school: The new school that you want to attend determines whether you are eligible to play.

Membership: The colleges, universities and athletics conferences that make up the NCAA. The members introduce and vote on rules. They establish programs to govern, promote and further the purposes and goals of intercollegiate athletics. The membership is divided into three main divisions — Divisions I, II and III — each with its own governing structure.

Two-year college: A school where students can earn an Associate of Arts (AA) degree, an Associate of Science (AS) degree or an Associate of Applied Science degree within two years (also referred to as community colleges or junior colleges).

Full-time: For NCAA purposes, you are considered a fulltime student if you are enrolled in at least 12 credit hours per term, even though some schools may define a fulltime student as someone who takes fewer than 12 credit hours per term. Generally, in order to be eligible for NCAA competition and athletically related financial aid, you must be enrolled in at least 12 credit hours per term.

International student: An international student is any student who is enrolled in a two-year or four-year school outside the United States.

Nonqualifier: A student-athlete planning to attend a Division I school who has not met academic requirements to be a Division I qualifier or academic redshirt. If you are a nonqualifier, you may not practice, compete or receive an athletics scholarship from a Division I school during your

first year of full-time enrollment. You will only have three seasons of competition in Division I, although you may earn a fourth season by completing 80 percent of your undergraduate degree before the start of your fifth year of collegiate enrollment.

• Academic Redshirt: A student-athlete who is a high school graduate and who presented the same academic qualifications applicable to qualifiers except for the following: The required minimum core-curriculum grade-point average and minimum combined score on the SAT critical reading and math sections or a minimum sum score on the ACT as specified in Bylaw 14.3.1.2.1; and

• Bylaw 14.3.1.1-(c) shall not apply.

Qualifier: A student-athlete who, for purposes of determining eligibility for financial aid, practice and competition, has:

• Graduated from high school;

• Successfully completed the required core curriculum consisting of a minimum number of courses in specified subjects within prescribed time frame;

• Obtained a specified minimum GPA in the core curriculum; and

• Obtained a specified minimum SAT or ACT score.

Walk-on: Someone who is not typically recruited by a school to participate in sports and does not receive a scholarship from the school, but who becomes a member of one of the school’s athletics teams.

TRANSFER PROCESS

Academic year in residence: Under the basic transfer regulations, you must spend an academic year in residence at the school to which you are transferring. If you transfer from a four-year college to an NCAA school, you must complete one academic year in residence at the new school before you can play for or receive travel expenses from the new school, unless you qualify for a transfer exception or waiver. To satisfy an academic year in residence, you must be enrolled in and successfully complete a full-time program of studies for two-full semesters or three-full quarters. Summer school terms and part-time enrollment do not count toward fulfilling an academic year in residence.

One-time transfer exception: If you transfer from a fouryear school, you may be immediately eligible to compete at your new school if you meet ALL the following conditions:

• You have not transferred previously from one four-year institution unless, in the previous transfer, you received an exception per Bylaw 14.5.5.2.6 (discontinued/ nonsponsored sport exception);

• At the time of transfer to the certifying institution (see Bylaw 14.5.2), you would have been academically

eligible had you remained at the institution from which you transferred, except that you are not required to have fulfilled the necessary percentage-of-degree requirements at the previous institution; and

• The head coach at the certifying school and you shall certify that no athletics staff member or other representative of the institution’s athletics interest communicated or made contact with you, or any individual associated with you (e.g., family member, scholastic or nonscholastic coach, advisor), directly or indirectly, without first obtaining authorization through the notification of transfer process (see Bylaw 13.1.1.3).

• You must provide written notification of transfer to the institution by the following dates:

• Fall and winter sports: May 1.

• Spring sports: July 1.

Transferable credit hours: Credit hours earned at your previous school that your new school will accept as degree credit. Each school determines how many, and which, credit hours are acceptable for transferring.

Conditions Affecting Transfer Status: A transfer student is a student who transfers from a collegiate institution after having triggered any of the conditions:

• Attended a class or classes in any quarter or semester in which you were enrolled in a minimum full-time program of studies, even if the enrollment was on a provisional basis and you were later determined by the institution not to be admissible;

• You are or were enrolled in an institution in a minimum full-time program of studies in a night school that is considered to have regular terms (semesters or quarters) the same as the institution’s day school, and you are or were considered by the institution to be a regularly matriculated student;

• You attended a branch school that does not conduct an intercollegiate athletics program, but you had been enrolled in another collegiate institution prior to attendance at the branch school;

• You attended a branch school that conducted an intercollegiate athletics program and transfer to an institution other than the parent institution;

• Reported for a regular squad practice;

• Practiced or competed while enrolled less than full time; or

• Received institutional financial aid while attending summer school or a summer orientation program.

Transfer Portal

Student-athletes interested in having their name placed on the Transfer Portal must comply with applicable Portal Windows as established the NCAA. Information pertaining to the Portal Windows can be found at the following link: http://fs.ncaa.org/Docs/eligibility_center/Transfer/DIUG_ Windows.pdf. There are limited exceptions to the Portal Windows, but the general rule is that student-athletes must wait until the applicable time periods to have their name placed on the Portal as well as utilize the one-time transfer exception. Student-athletes interested in transferring should consult with LIU’s Athletic Compliance Office to discuss NCAA academic and athletic eligibility rules. In the event a student-athlete places his or her name on the NCAA Transfer Portal, LIU reserves the right to cancel or reduce an athletic scholarship where permissible, and also reserves the right to restrict the student-athlete’s use of athletic department facilities such as the team locker room and the weight room.

NCAA Transfer Portal: Before student-athletes can have contact with coaches, athletics staff members or other representatives of the institution’s athletics interests at other NCAA institutions about transferring, they must place their name in the NCAA Transfer Portal. In order to utilize the one-time transfer exception and not have to sit out a year upon transferring, the student-athlete must place their name in the Transfer Portal by May 1st for fall and winter sports, and July 1st for spring sports. Communication with the new school’s office of admissions is permissible without having your name in the Portal. You also can contact other student-athletes at the school you are looking to transfer to, provided communication is not at the direction of the coach, athletics staff members or other representatives

of the institution’s athletics interests from that school. In Division I, your current school has the right to reduce or cancel your financial aid at the end of the current academic term or vacation period in which you provide written notification of transfer. Further, your athletics aid may be reduced or canceled if place your name in the Transfer Portal, but end up remaining at your current institution. After notification, your original school is not obligated to take you back as a student-athlete. Your NCAA ID number, school, sport and email address will be the only information listed in this portal. After the compliance office submits the notification of transfer, your academic and athletics history will be entered to determine your NCAA eligibility. Outside Competition: Outside competition is athletics competition against any other athletics team (including an alumni team) that does not represent the intercollegiate athletics program of the same institution. The eligibility of a student-athlete who engages in outside competition is affected as set forth in the following regulations:

Outside Competition – Sports Other Than Basketball. A student-athlete in any sport other than basketball who participates during the academic year as a member of any outside team in any noncollegiate, amateur competition becomes ineligible for intercollegiate competition unless eligibility is restored by the Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement.

Exception – Sports Other Than Wrestling. In sports other than wrestling, a student-athlete may compete outside the institution’s declared playing and practice

season as a member of an outside team in any noncollegiate, amateur competition during any official vacation period. The number of student-athletes from any one institution shall not exceed the applicable limits set forth in Bylaw 17.31.2.

Exception – Wrestling. In wrestling, a student-athlete may compete outside the institution’s declared playing and practice season as a member of an outside team in any non-collegiate, amateur competition during any official vacation period, except a vacation period that occurs between the beginning of the institution’s academic year and November 1.

Exception – Soccer, Women’s Volleyball, Field Hockey and Men’s Water Polo. In soccer, women’s volleyball, field hockey and men’s water polo, a student-athlete may compete outside the institution’s declared playing and practice season as a member of an outside team in any non-collegiate, amateur competition, provided:

(a) Such participation occurs not earlier than May 1;

(b) In soccer, women’s volleyball and field hockey, the number of student-athletes from any one institution does not exceed the applicable limits set forth in Bylaw 17.31.2;

(c) The competition is approved by the institution’s director of athletics;

(d) No class time is missed for practice activities or for competition; and

(e) In women’s volleyball, all practice and competition is confined to doubles tournaments in outdoor volleyball, either on sand or grass.

EQUIPMENT POLICY FOR STUDENT-ATHLETES

Student-athletes will be issued athletic apparel and equipment for use during athletic practice, contests and travel. Students are to use all apparel and equipment for themselves only. Items issued to student-athletes by the Long Island University Department of Athletics cannot be sold, traded or given to other individuals as gifts. Students are responsible for maintaining the quality and appearance of their apparel and equipment. Students must notify their coach immediately when apparel or equipment has been damaged, lost, or stolen.

NAME, IMAGE, & LIKENESS

NCAA college athletes now have the opportunity to benefit from their name, image and likeness (NIL). All three NCAA divisions have adopted a uniform, interim policy suspending NCAA name, image and likeness rules for all incoming and current student-athletes in all sports. Individuals can engage in NIL activities that are consistent with the law of the state where the school is located. Colleges and universities may be a resource for state law questions. Individuals can use a professional services provider for NIL activities. College athletes who attend a school in a state without an NIL law can engage in NIL activity without violating NCAA rules related to name, image and likeness. State law and schools/ conferences may impose reporting requirements. Additional NIL information can be found here. All student-athletes participating in NIL activities must register with FanWord, which is online service dedicated to assisting you in these opportunities.

SPORTS WAGERING

NCAA rules prohibit participation in sports wagering activities and from providing information to individuals involved in or associated with any type of sports wagering activities concerning intercollegiate, amateur or professional athletics competition. Sports wagering has the potential to undermine the integrity of sports contests and jeopardizes the well-being of student-athletes and the intercollegiate athletics community. It also demeans the competition and competitors alike by spreading a message that is contrary to the purpose and meaning of “sport”. Sports competition should be appreciated for the inherent benefits related to participation of student-athletes, coaches and institutions in fair contests, not the amount of money wagered on the outcome of the competition. If you put something at risk (e.g., cash, entry fee, dinner or other tangible item) on any amateur and/or professional sporting event with a chance to win something in return, you violate NCAA sports wagering rules. Types of sport wagers that violate NCAA

rules include, but are not limited to, fantasy leagues, March Madness® brackets, Super Bowl squares, sports pools, online sports bets, sports betting apps, parlay and prop bets, live in-game betting and single game sports bets. Student-athletes should NOT share any information about their team or any other team. This includes information regarding team disciplinary actions, strategy, injuries or team morale, as this information is sought by gamblers. Student-athletes who violate NCAA sports wagering rules will be ineligible for competition, subject to appeal to the Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement. Penalties will be considered on a case-by-case basis based on the guidelines for the division in which the student-athlete participates. TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF LIU ATHLETIC AID AGREEMENT

1. The award must conform to rules and regulations set forth by the institution and the NCAA.

2. Athletics financial aid may be awarded for any regular term during which the student-athlete is in regular full-time attendance. Tuition and related expenses for the summer and/or winter session is also not covered under the terms

and conditions of this agreement. Students (except for basketball players under NCAA provisions) who wish to have summer and/or winter sessions covered must apply individually to the University and receive pre-approval from the Athletics Department before NCAA Student Assistance Funds are allocated on their behalf.

3. A student-athlete may receive financial assistance only if it is administered by the institution, received from anyone upon whom the student-athlete is naturally or legally dependent, or provided from permissible outside sources per NCAA regulations.

4. Athletically-related financial aid is awarded to a studentathlete in two categories: a) Tuition & Fees and b) Room, Board and Other. Awards for Tuition & Fees, combined with all other institutional financial aid, including federal and state aid (e.g., Pell, TAP, SEOG, etc.), may not exceed the standard budgeted value of tuition and fees for any given academic year. Awards related to tuition, fees, room, board, and other may not exceed the standard budgeted cost of attendance value as defined by the institution each year, per NCAA regulations. Student athletes who choose to live in on-campus housing that exceeds the cost of a standard double room and meal plan 1 are required to pay for or finance any cost overages prior to move in each semester.

5. Student athletes will not be eligible to play, practice, or move into the residence hall unless they complete the annual Free Application for Federal Student Aid and satisfy all To Do items in their financial aid package.

6. All institutional financial aid earmarked for tuition-related expenses shall not exceed 18 undergraduate credits or 9 graduate credits per-semester. However, an undergraduate student with a fifth year of eligibility who is completing a Master’s degree in their final year may exceed 9 graduate credits per term for that final year only.

7. All student-athletes are automatically enrolled in and billed for the University’s Student Health Insurance plan each academic year. If your personal health insurance plan meets the requirement coverage set forth by the State of New York, you can request to waive enrollment in the University’s Student Health Insurance Plan. If not waived, it is the responsibility of the student athlete to pay for or finance the cost of the Plan. The University’s Student Health Insurance Plan is not a charge that is covered under the terms and conditions of this agreement. Students who wish to have their health insurance costs covered by the University due to hardship must apply individually and receive pre- approval from the Athletics Department before NCAA Student Assistance Funds are allocated on their behalf.

8. The recipient of this grant-in-aid shall be fully responsible for any international taxes levied as a result of receipt of this scholarship. Taxes are not covered under the terms and conditions of this agreement. International students who wish to have their taxes covered under a tax treaty or because of hardship must apply individually to the University and receive pre-approval before NCAA Student Assistance Funds are allocated on their behalf.

9. The University reserves the right to reduce or cancel merit-based institutional aid and/or athletic aid. LIU merit aid may be capped at $10,000 for students who also receive an athletic grant-in-aid. Should a continuing student-athlete fall below a cumulative grade-point average of at least a 3.0, their merit- based aid and/or athletics aid may be reduced or cancelled based on University policy.

10. Notification of renewal of this grant-in-aid for the subsequent academic year must be provided by July 1.

11. Institutional aid may not be reduced for any of the following reasons:

a. On the basis of a student’s athletic ability, performance or contribution to a team’s success;

b. Because of an injury, illness or a physical or mental condition (except as permitted by rule) that prevents the student from participating in athletics; or

c. For any other athletically-related reason.

12. Institutional aid may be reduced or canceled during the period of this award if the recipient:

a. Renders himself/herself ineligible for intercollegiate competition for any reason;

b. Fraudulently misrepresents any information on an application, letter of intent, or financial aid agreement. NCAA Bylaw 15.3.4.2.3 states that if a student-athlete is awarded institutional financial aid on the basis of declaring intention to participate in a particular sport by signing a letter of intent, application or tender, action on the part of the grantee not to participate (either by not reporting for practice or after making only token appearances as determined by the institution) would constitute fraudulent misrepresentation of information on the grantee’s application, letter of intent or financial aid agreement and would permit the institution to cancel or reduce the financial aid;

c. Engages in serious misconduct warranting substantial disciplinary penalty. (An institution may reduce or cancel the financial aid of a student-athlete who is found to have engaged in misconduct by the University’s regular student disciplinary authority, even if the loss-of-aid requirement does not apply to the student body in general);

d. Places his or her name on the NCAA Transfer Portal; or

e. Voluntarily withdraws from a sport at any time for personal reasons.

f. A written notice of a hearing opportunity will be provided if aid is reduced or cancelled during the period of award for any reason.

NEC SPORTSMANSHIP POLICY

NEC member institutions value the principles of sportsmanship and the ideal of pursuing victory with honor in intercollegiate athletics. The Conference believes that athletics should be conducted in a way that reflects positively on the individual participants and institutions. The standards of sportsmanship below are written to emphasize the basic expectations of the Conference related to sportsmanship and provide the Commissioner with broad authority to ensure that Conference activities are consistent

with these principles.

The essential elements of sportsmanship and ethics in sports are embodied in the concept of character building and seven core principles: respect, responsibility, fairness, honesty, integrity, caring and civility. The highest potential of sports is achieved when competition reflects these seven principles.

Standards of Conduct

a. Member Institutions’ student-athletes, coaches and staff shall conduct themselves in accord with the Sportsmanship Policy and otherwise in an appropriate manner in connection with all intercollegiate sporting events in which they participate, from the time they arrive through the time they depart a competition related site (“Events”) as well as promotional and other events relating to the Event (e.g., pre- or post-event press conferences, media days, photo shoots, etc.). They shall conduct themselves as positive role models and represent their institutions in a manner that exhibits the principles of sportsmanship. They shall exhibit respect and courtesy toward all participants and facilities, and comment about other institutions, coaches and student-athletes only in a positive manner.

b. Behavior that is not considered sportsmanlike or appropriate in connection with Events includes, but is not

limited to, the following:

i. Striking (e.g., kicking, hitting, throwing objects at) or spitting at any individual, whether a teammate, competing player, coach, staff or contest official, breaking or throwing sporting equipment, or engaging in any other acts of violence, attempted acts of violence or attempts to incite violence;

ii. Using obscene, profane, demeaning or unduly provocative language, gestures or actions in an excessive manner or in a manner that is directed towards an opposing team, institution, contest official, staff member or spectator;

iii. Publicly criticizing of, or making publicly disparaging statements about, an opposing team, institution, contest official, staff member, spectator or the Conference;

iv. Engaging in theft, damage or disrespecting of property in conjunction with an event; and

v. Engaging in any other actions, as determined by the Commissioner, in violation of the principles, standards and general goals of sportsmanship.

c. If a coach or student-athlete is ejected from an Event, the coach or student- athlete must be removed from all sight and sound for the remainder of the Event. An

on-site administrator is responsible for notifying both the Conference office and the visiting team’s athletic department (if the ejected coach or student-athlete is from the visiting team). With the exception of men’s and women’s soccer, the site and sound policy also applies in cases where additional game suspensions are required.

d. Each Member Institution shall advise their coaches and assistant coaches in writing that they must conduct themselves in a dignified and courteous manner throughout and following Events, by abstaining from actions which indicate displeasure, by emotionally overreacting with players, or by appealing to the fans. In particular, a coach shall restrain himself/herself by remaining on the bench in those sports where this type of behavior is required in order to maintain the dignity of his/her position. Where an interpretation of a decision by the officials is desired by the coach, the request should be straightforward and without body language to indicate disagreement with the call and the coach shall act in a dignified manner. The Member Institutions are responsible for ensuring that their coaches and assistant coaches act in the manner set forth herein.

Competitive Environment

a. The management and conduct of Events is the responsibility of the hosting institutions. In their discharge of this responsibility, all member institutions shall ensure a competitive environment that is safe, fair, and consistent with the principles and standards of sportsmanship.

b. All ancillary support groups subject to institutional control (e.g., spirit quads, bands, mascots) shall conform to the principles and standards of sportsmanship.

c. Institutions are responsible for the conduct of spectators at Events they are hosting. Spectators whose conduct is abusive to officials, participants or spectators, or that violates reasonable social standards of conduct, should be removed from the Event.

d. Spectators should be located in the stands during a contest. They may not stand or sit near the edge of the playing area in order to harass the opposing team or officials.

Member Institution Obligations

a. Each member institution shall have the primary responsibility for promoting sportsmanship and appropriate conduct, and for ensuring that its participants conduct themselves in a sportsmanlike manner in connection with all intercollegiate sporting events and without limitation comply with the Sportsmanship Policy.

b. Each member institution shall adopt policies and procedures to implement the principles and standards of sportsmanship.

c. Each member institution shall comply with the obligations

outlined in the NEC Game Management policies.

d. Each member institution shall take appropriate disciplinary or remedial actions in response to any conduct in connection with sporting events that is not sportsmanlike or appropriate by its participants.

e. The athletic director of a member institution shall promptly inform the Conference Commissioner of any conduct or actions by participants in connection with events that are not sportsmanlike or appropriate, and of any actions to be taken in respect of such conduct.

Social Media

Member institutions’ student-athletes, coaches and staff shall conduct themselves in an appropriate manner with respect to social media. Examples of inappropriate and offensive behaviors concerning participation in online communities may include depictions or presentations of the following:

a. Posting photos, videos, comments or posters showing the personal use of alcohol or tobacco.

b. Posting photos, videos, and comments that are of a sexual nature. This includes links to websites of a pornographic nature and other inappropriate material.

c. Posting pictures, videos, comments or posters that condone drug related activity. This includes but is not limited to images that portray the personal use of marijuana, and drug paraphernalia.

d. Using inappropriate or offensive language in all comments, videos and other postings. This includes threats of violence and derogatory comments against race and/or gender.

e. Public criticism of or publicly disparaging statements about an opposing team, institution, contest official, staff member, spectator, or the conference.

STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC)

A student-athlete advisory committee (SAAC) is a committee made up of student-athletes assembled to provide insight on the student-athlete experience and to offer input on the rules, regulations and polices that affect student-athletes’ lives on NCAA member institution campuses.

Mission: To enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare and fostering a positive student-athlete image.

Purpose: To promote communication between the Athletics Administration and the Student-Athlete.

a. Disseminate information

b. Provide feedback and insight into the Dept. Of Athletic issues or concerns

c. Generate a student-athlete voice regarding formulation of athletic policies

d. Build community within the Pioneers Athletics with all athletic teams

e. Solicit student-athlete responses to proposed NCAA Legislation

f. Organize community service events

g. Promote a positive student-athlete image on campus

Responsibilities of the Executive Board:

a. Preside over meeting

b. Serves as SAAC liaison to the Department of Athletics

c. Shall represent SAAC at any applicable conference or NCAA meetings

d. Performs such duties as are incidental to the office

ATHLETIC TRAINING

The Athletic Training Staff and Medical staff, including team doctors and Physical therapy staff, work cooperatively to provide appropriate medical care for students-athletes. Certified Athletic Trainers provide student-athletes with athletic injury related health care needs and referrals to physicians and other allied health care professionals when indicated.

NCAA rules state that the Department of Athletics is responsible for medical services administered to studentathletes who are injured in a university sanctioned athletic practice or game. The term “athletic injury” applies only to those ailments that are caused by the participation in a supervised practice or game.

It should be understood by the athlete that intercollegiate athletics produce a high risk for injury. The athlete is responsible to take all measures necessary to prevent and minimize the risk of such injuries. The student-athlete is also

responsible for informing the Athletic Training Staff of any athletically related injury or illness, or any non-athletically related injury or illness that could have any effect on athletic participation, including concussions. It is the studentathlete’s responsibility to inform the Athletic Training Staff of any increase in signs and/or symptoms, medication change, or abnormal responses to treatment and/or rehabilitation. The student-athlete accepts responsibility to attend treatment and rehabilitation sessions, physician visits, etc in order to improve their condition and

prepare for athletic competition. Student-athletes have the right to seek physician evaluation from Long Island University’s physicians. Student-athletes have the right to seek physician evaluation and/or rehabilitation services outside of the Long Island University Sports Medicine Team, but must follow insurance protocol.

Medical Clearance

New and First year Students Requirements

• Health evaluation form- Form must be completed by Doctor or nurse practitioner with exam taken within 6 months of report date for NCAA athletes. Non-NCAA sanctioned sports can have physical within 12 months of report date.

• LIU MMR Form

• LIU Meningitis Form

• Sickle testing- Athletes can be cleared to participate once test is performed; they will not need to wait for results. If results are still pending modification to intensity of activity should be considered.

All Student Athlete Requirements

• Insurance - Insurance needs to be on SWOL profile. For those who enroll into UHCSR plan it is required they have proof of insurance- enrollment confirmation from JCB website or email confirmation from LIU or JCB employees. Once enrolled please have student download card from UHCSR website once it is available, typically 2-3 weeks, and upload to SWOL.

• All require SWOL forms and required field completion in their profile.

• Completion of Baseline Concussion testing every year.

Insurance

Long Island University is committed to ensuring all students have the appropriate resources to uphold their physical health and wellness. Per LIU policy, all domestic student athletes are automatically enrolled in and billed for the student health insurance plan unless they submit an approved insurance waiver that meets LIU’s minimum requirements, by the established deadline.

Waiver Requirements : In order to waive the LIU student insurance plan, your personal health insurance plan must be active and meet the following minimum coverage requirements:

• Plan must be owned, operated, and filed in the United States.

• Plan must be in compliance with the Affordable Care Act (ACA Compliant).

• Plan must provide coverage without exclusion for injuries sustained participating in intercollegiate athletics.

• Students with out-of-state coverage who waive out of the University’s student health insurance plan may not have full access to medical care in the metro-New York region.

Secondary Insurance Policy

The Long Island University Intercollegiate Athletic

Accident Insurance policy will provide secondary insurance coverage for injuries incurred by athletes who participate in intercollegiate sports. However, to take advantage of this coverage, the athlete must first file a claim for reimbursement under his/her primary insurance policy. The LIU athletic department coverage cannot be tapped into until the student-athlete’s primary policy has completed processing all medical expenses. As a general matter, to expedite the medical claims process, it is imperative that all injuries incurred while participating in LIU intercollegiate athletics be brought to the immediate attention of the sports medicine staff. Failure to follow this procedure or departure from the LIU sports medicine network may result in unpaid insurance claims which then become the sole responsibility of the parent and/or athlete.

Drug Testing Policy

All LIU student-athletes are subject to NCAA and institutional drug testing. NCAA Division I bylaw 12 requires that schools provide drug education to all student-athletes. The athletics director or athletics director’s designee shall disseminate the list of banned drug classes to all student-

athletes and educate them about products that might contain banned drugs.

All Student-athletes are to be notified the list may change during the academic year and updates may be found on ncaa.org. It is student athletes’ responsibility to check with the appropriate or designated athletics staff before using any substance. Concussion Policy

Long Island University is committed to protecting the health of and providing a safe environment for each of its participating NCAA student-athletes. To this end, and in accordance with NCAA legislation, Long Island University has adopted the following Concussion Safety Protocol for all NCAA student-athletes. As required by NCAA Independent Medical Care legislation, team physicians and athletic trainers shall have unchallengeable autonomous authority to determine medical management and return-toactivity decisions, including those pertaining to concussion and head trauma injuries, for all student-athletes.

Education

All student-athletes will be provided and allowed an opportunity to discuss educational material (e.g., the NCAA Concussion Education Fact Sheet). The studentathletes will be required to sign an acknowledgement, on an annual basis and prior to participation, that they have been provided, reviewed and understood the concussion education material.

All coaches, team physicians, athletic trainers, directors of athletics and other athletics personnel involved in NCAA student-athlete health and safety decision making will be provided and allowed an opportunity to discuss educational material (e.g., the NCAA Concussion Education Fact Sheet) and be required to sign an acknowledgement, on an annual basis, that they have been provided, reviewed and understood the concussion education material.

Pre-Participation Assessment

All NCAA student-athletes will undergo a pre-participation baseline concussion assessment. This pre-participation assessment will be conducted at Long Island University and, at a minimum, will include assessment for the following:

• History of concussion or brain injury, neurologic disorder, and mental health symptoms and disorders.

• Symptom evaluation as contained in the SWAY Neurocognitive assessment Program.

• Cognitive assessment through the SWAY Neurocognitive Assessment program.

• Balance evaluation using the SWAY

The team physician will determine pre-participation clearance and any need for additional consultation or testing and will consider for a new baseline concussion assessment at six months or beyond for any NCAA studentathlete with a documented concussion, specially those with complicated or multiple concussion history.

Mental Health and Wellness

Long Island University students have access to on-campus mental health counseling services, nutrition counseling, religious and spiritual counseling, and access to tele-heath and local in-person health care. The Center has licensed mental health professionals, graduate student therapists, and nutritionists to provide consultation and support. Medical referrals are made in partnership with Northwell Health - GoHealth.

The Center has licensed mental health professionals and graduate student therapists on-campus to assist students. Services offered at the Center include individual counseling, group counseling, and health and wellness campus programs. Students may also be referred to an off-campus professional for long-term care.

The Staff at the Center provides support by helping students to:

• Keep anxiety at bay

• Manage moods

• Reduce stress

• Foster self-esteem

• Understand gender identity

• Resolve conflict

• Improve communication skills

• Cope with grief and loss

• Express anger appropriately

• Develop a healthy body image

Student Health and Counseling Confidentiality Policy

All health and counseling services and records are confidential in accordance with legal and ethical guidelines and are not part of a student’s academic record. Information about health services received, a student’s participation in counseling, or counseling information cannot be released without a written consent authorizing the release of specified information and naming the person(s) to receive the information, unless where law or emergency situations require it.
