Archeology of Emotions Ronald Furher

Elad Kopler’s talent in painting is indisputable. He is among those rare artists who form their own identifiable, singular painterly language. Recently, a noticeable transformation has occurred in his works, as is clear to see in the present exhibition: the expressiveness of his paintings indicates that the artist overcame the anxieties that used to haunt him.

I first visited Kopler in his studio in 2012, on the recommendation of curator Sarit Shapira. After a quick glance at his large, powerful works, dense works that were full of extremes, I encouraged him to open them up, and Kopler listened. The impressive works I saw before me were a direct projection of a rigid defense mechanism, a consequence of his anxieties. The big change he managed to bring about since that time resulted in surprising effects: gentleness and optimism that fill the surface with positive human feelings; soft lines and contrasting colors; and above all, a wonderful transparency.

At my second visit I was astounded by the change, and by my third visit I had understood that this profound transformation is indeed solid and valid. In the past Kopler presented his discomfort in face of destruction and desolation with images from which flickered, here and there, slight glimpses of optimism. Now he is presenting us with a world of creation, not destruction; with very little of the black color that dominated his earlier works. The polarity and obsessiveness are here replaced with an aesthetic of sanguinity and harmony.

Leading up to the 2016 VOLTA NY art fair, Kopler described his work in universal terms and avoided tying his artistic processes to the local Israeli artistic heritage. Since then, along with the change described above, Kopler has solidified his awareness to his place in a sequence of developments in Israeli art, in relation to the local light and landscape with a precise and assured formulation of his uniqueness as well as his generation’s zeitgeist. These two important changes have propelled his work toward new horizons; and here I am referring specifically to the New Horizons group, whose central artists – Zaritsky, Streichman, Stematsky, Meirovich – developed an aesthetics of transparency at a relatively late stage of their careers, and these later works (which were initially considered lesser than the earlier ones) today occupy a place of honor in the pantheon of Israeli art.

I congratulate Monica Lavi, director and chief curator of Nahum Gutman Museum of Art for selecting the choice works among Kopler’s new paintings, which mark his recent, fascinating transformation. >

A Tree and a House Monica Lavi

A horde of abstract “untitled” paintings that speak in a modernist tongue, are equipped with postmodern artistic strategies and Israeli dexterity inundates visitors at the current exhibition on show at the Nahum Gutman Museum of Art. To write about the paintings of Elad Kopler involves tracing a dazzling choreography of overflowing brush movements on canvas surfaces that rush onward from one to the next. Among the great racket the paintings create, amid the blasts of colors and forms, are sites of quiet and calm: a tree, a window, a house, a glimpse of an image.

Kopler follows forking paths seeped with European and Israeli modernist traditions.

His paintings have Henri Matisse playing with Joseph Zaritsky and Raffi Lavie,

Georges Rouault entertaining Lea Nikel. The interactions and oscillations of central modernist trends and the personal styles of leading artists produce encounters that come accompanied with gestures directed at the forebears of modernist art. The unfolding painterly conversation requires no translation.

The language of modernist painting is spoken in Kopler’s painting with the enunciation of someone for whom it is his native, natural tongue. Yet the exchange,

however swift, articulate and skilled as it is, presents, on its other side – that of the viewer – modernism’s obtuse aspect: the language of lines, forms and colors that are not intended for translation into literate text. Indeed Elad Kopler, a 43 year old painter (born 1974), is not a modernist but a postmodernist. The prefix “post”– and through it Kopler – suggests a gaze at modernism that is fully aware of acts of quotation, reproduction and appropriation, and allows the artist himself to quote, consciously or not, works of art he has seen, perceived and comprehended throughout his life.

Within this loud and playful painterly carnival, with its array of gestures and quotes, Kopler opens apertures, windows and gateways that lead the gaze to the heart of his painting, to the soul of the things, to the baffling, traumatic and dangerous places. At the innards of Kopler’s colorfulness and painterly skills lies a terrifying darkness key to comprehending his works. These openings are scattered in all of his paintings where they clearly gather around such subjects as “house,” “tree,” and “window,” along with other recurring subjects (of varying degrees of clarity).

At times Kopler begins his work by marking a grid on the canvas. The grid, a network of crisscross lines, is the paradigm of modernism in its minimalistic guise.

However, despite its status as the symbol of strict, hermetic, high modernism, the grid remains present in the “post” times to which it has adapted, imbuing its features among the images and quoting gestures in which it seems submerged. Acting as an interweaver, Kopler’s crisscross lines don’t stretch classically from one side of the canvas to the other. Rather the support is constructed from connected squares that form a defined, mathematically organized space on which the painting is positioned. However, their meeting place is also where they collide, exposing a conceptual gap between the painting’s material support and the painting itself; between the modernistic make-up of the painting and its postmodernist chassis. From a painterly viewpoint, from the vantage of historical, ideological and stylistic associations, this collision is paradoxical: the rebel clings to the authority, wraps itself around it, and seeks its protection.

As a teenager Kopler was enrolled in his high-school’s architecture program where sketching a floorplan was part of the curriculum. As the work on a painting progresses the grid lines disappear beneath the layers of color, just as an architectural plan is embedded into the foundations of the house being built. Yet the grid is still there, a secret guard marking the limits of the painting, the freedom limited by the laws of art. The dialectic of order and chaos, discipline and permissiveness, comes to the surface of Kopler’s paintings where it is reorganized. The grid at the depth of the painting seems to resonate the “names of the father,” those that mark the boundaries of the law as well as the impulse to break it.1 The American art critic Michael Fried holds that the grid introduces theatrical elements into modernism, that it concretizes space, bringing forth the here-and-now as opposed to the transcendental quality of modernist abstract painting.2 Although he refers largely to minimalist sculpture and less to the painterly grid, Fried’s definitions of the concrete and the here-and-now are useful for comprehending the painterly gestures and broad movements of Kopler, who is sent “home” by these characteristics of the grid – to the floorplans of the imaginary homes he drew as a child, to his current house and the buildings around his studio, and especially to his absent childhood home.

In an essay from 1914, Freud noted that the trauma sufferer replaces the act of remembering the trauma with its obsessive repetition in concrete, as opposed to literal, acts.3 A psychoanalytic exaggeration would suggest that the concrete grid, in

its repetitiveness and varying modes of reproduction throughout the history of art, hints at the return of some primal trauma, or at the notion that art is fundamentally tied to trauma and to a need for release from it. For Kopler, who lost his mother as a young child and was raised by a father in whose heartache became homeless, the house is forever a yearned-for object. The obsessive repetition in his paintings – their thick layers of paint, swiftness and colorfulness, stylistic quoting of modernism’s fathers and mothers – can be read as a reverse adoption: the son adopting his parents in an act of survival and search for home and family.

In Kopler’s drawings, some of which are displayed in the exhibition, the image of a house appears in various guises: as a floorplan, a box or greenhouse, a treehouse or otherwise. In the two house drawings juxtaposed here (p. 9), the motif of a tree also appears: once as branches incorporated into the floorplan; once as a tree growing from the box-greenhouse; and lastly as a tree growing beside a treehouse set on poles (p. 6). The house and the tree are painterly and syntactic anchors that also appear in the oil paintings; they also recur in different variations as thematic anchors, in the acrylic paintings.

A similarity of subject matter and composition appears in a drawing (p. 6) and an Untitled painting from 2015 (p. 10). This is based on the realization that the gray trapezoid stain at the top right side – which seems like a roof slipping diagonally downwards while casting its shadow over the painting’s lower right side – is almost identical to the shape of the roof in the drawing. On the left side of both is a large tree whose crown is screened by a pink-orange square through which its branches are seen.

Two triangles meet between the trapezoid of the gray stain and the orange square, the top one is black and the lower white. As if illustrating an exercise in alternate angles, the angles are set between two geometric shapes and infuse the painting with a measure of instability that charges it with a mass that makes the two geometric shapes at the top of the painting seem all of a sudden like guillotines.

Different viewpoints populate Kopler’s works creating a kaleidoscopic flickering surface that challenges the viewer’s roving gaze. The two geometric stains in the top part of the painting playfully intersect, overlap and flatten each other, as in a tangram riddle, while also venturing to other countries and dimensions, recalling Edwin Abbot’s novel Flatland. The shapes at the bottom of the painting evoke a forest or a dark wood, inducing a feeling of dense space being pushed toward the painting’s front plane which is blocked by a black wall intersected by a straight gray line. The forest foliage is painted

in black, green-gray and brown with flashings of bright, fresh, greens and oranges. A teeming, dusky chaotic sense emanates from the painting, as if a forceful and murky nature easily infiltrated the organized composition and made its way into the heart of the house. At the center of the lower right side, above a grass-green calligraphically designed sign, Kopler painted, with quick brush strokes, the twisting form of a snake.

The outside penetrates inwards and this vulnerable interior imbues Kopler’s painting with a permanent sense of instability, wherein anything can move in and out at one and the same time, reaching the depth of the painting through one of its many openings and exiting at another place, as in an amusement park that offers visitors pleasurable and fearful surprises, or as in a forest. The elaborate composition of another painting,

Similarly to Yehezkel Streichman, the master of Israeli window-grating painting, Kopler uses the surfaces of window-grate images to define an indefinable space, an abstract threshold separating the inside from the outside. The painterly plan so created remains flimsy, open and closed, suffocating and full of life. Whereas the horizontal window-grate at the top of the painting resembles a window facing a garden view – the crisscrossed lattice on the right side recalls a locking apparatus of a cramped prison cell. And here, behind the lattice, behind the cement colored gray, in a fissure Kopler tears into the painting, sprouts green foliage. The painting’s colors move from light to dark, from a childish, campish pink to the grays of military barricades. The gratings scattered all over the painting seem like an arrangement of scaffolds that rise to the surface from the depth of the grid, reinforcing the foundations of the painting and thereby allowing Kopler to move forcefully over the canvas surface in quick, intuitive, physical acts.

Some of Kopler’s paintings are organized, compacted, with bold, pronounced, clear color. Others, in contrast, lack a sense of structure, their stains are more amorphous and their colors flow into bright, warm and pastoral schemes. And yet still, the structured, geometric element is not completely gone.

In the yellow-pink painting Untitled (2017, p. 29) a plywood board appears to have been placed on an easel that bares the traces of the paintings painted on it. Echoes of the house plan still resonate, yet the painting does not invite inwards. Despite an implicit sexual seductiveness it refuses to be penetrated. A threatening black rectangle hangs above, and in it appear undecipherable letters spelling out something similar to the word “painting”. This word is written in a non-language, a hybrid of words and brush strokes, and it is trapped in a black frame from which it peeps out like the pot-plant in Bialik’s poem whose fate it is to stare at the garden. Beneath, obliquely,

pink smears made with a wide brush attest to some drama; one that does not exclude the possibility of the traces of a crime that have been blurred into a sugary pink. The drippings and dribbles on the edges and the center of the painting also suggest some material and physical essence that dissolves and trickles down, gathering at the lower edges of the painting. And of course, how can the most obvious remain unsaid: the drippings and dribbles, quasi-words, bright colors, paint traces and remnants on a canvas simulating a painting on plywood – all these invoke the paintings of Raffi Lavie, the mighty patriarch of Israeli “want of matter” modernism.

Kopler is constantly on the move, moving with his brushes over the surface of the canvas, he is everywhere always. This readiness and jumpiness is expressed with quick, bursting arm movements, in painting from the elbow, in painterly events that occur simultaneously in different places on the canvas, with paintbrushes that are dipped into the same color fluttering about the painting. Considering Kopler’s body of work from his point of view, as if it were an enormous floorplan – it is as though his objective is in fact to cover all the canvases and all the available places in his paintings. Time is short and the task at hand considerable, and all that has been done so-far amounts to a drop in the ocean.

The sense of urgency in Kopler’s painting conveys something beyond painting, something like an addiction: an addiction to movement, to thrills, to walking on the edge; an addiction to the libido of action painting; and especially an addiction to activeness as a generator of an illusion that serves to protect from anxiety and loss. His paintings are characterized with density, formal burden, and concentrated colorfulness across a number of scales. In fact, each of his paintings’ components maintains a number of parallel occurrences and in many paintings there is a simultaneous use of different modernist artistic languages, with which he is equipped like a computer gamer. Minimalism, surrealism, abstract expressionism, lyrical abstract, “want of matter” – all these provide arms in an endless painting war, whose aim is to create a successful alternative to reality.

The psychoanalyst, Itamar Levy, wrote about dreams: “In order to fulfill itself as a dream, the dream must build itself a house, must turn from dream-thought to dream-house, from a dream of wandering to a dream about the return of the prodigal son. Seemingly the story could end at home, yet the dream returns and opens up once again, returns and leaves once again.”4 Elad Kopler’s painting could also end at home,

but it returns and opens up – as does the house within it. Every painting contains a suggestion for the next paintings, lending his painting something familial, Israeli. His paintings are like a large family clan that bears its offspring who remain close by. They are not separated but in permanent continuation, and they live in the paintings-houses whose walls are transparent, in coverless buildings, full of anxiety, love, yearning, and a constant worry that everything will be all right.

‫במברשת רחבה מעידות על איזו דרמה‪ ,‬שאינה מוציאה‬ ‫מכלל האפשרות עקבות פשע שטושטשו לוורוד סוכריה‪.‬‬ ‫הזליגות והטפטופים בשולי הציור ובמרכזו מעידים גם הם‬ ‫על איזו מהות חומרית וגופנית מתפרקת המטפטפת מטה‪,‬‬ ‫זולגת ונקווית בשוליים התחתונים של הציור‪ .‬וכמובן‪,‬‬ ‫איך אפשר שלא לומר את המובן מאליו‪ :‬הטפטופים‪,‬‬ ‫הזליגות‪ ,‬הספק־מילים‪ ,‬הצבעוניות הבהירה‪ ,‬עקבות‬ ‫השאריות הציוריות של ציור על בד שמדמה ציור על‬ ‫דיקט — כל אלה מזכירים את ציורו של רפי לביא‪ ,‬האב‬ ‫הגדול והמאיים של המודרניזם הישראלי דל החומר‪.‬‬ ‫קופלר נמצא כל הזמן בתנועה‪ .‬הוא נע עם מכחוליו‬ ‫ללא כותרת‪ ,2017 ,‬אקריליק ושמן על בד‬

‫ומברשותיו על פני הבד‪ ,‬כמו מישהו שנמצא בכל מקום‬ ‫בעת ובעונה אחת‪ .‬הדריכּות הקפיצית הזאת באה לידי‬ ‫ביטוי בתנועות יד מהירות ומתפרצות‪ ,‬בציור מהמרפק‪,‬‬

‫בהתרחשות ציורית סימולטנית בכמה מקומות על הבד‪ ,‬במכחולים שנטבלו באותו צבע והם מרקדים‬ ‫ברחבי הציור‪ .‬אם מתבוננים בגוף העבודה של קופלר במבט קופלרי‪ ,‬כאילו היה מין תוכנית רצפה‬ ‫ענקית — עולה לה בראש המחשבה שהפרויקט של קופלר הוא בעצם לכסות את כל הבדים ואת כל‬ ‫המקומות הפנויים בציוריו; הזמן קצר והמלאכה מרובה‪ ,‬וכל שנעשה הוא בחזקת טיפה בים‪.‬‬ ‫שמעבר לציור‪ ,‬משהו שמזכיר‬ ‫ֵ‬ ‫תחושת הדחיפות העולה מציוריו של קופלר שולחת אל דבר־מה‬ ‫התמכרות‪ :‬התמכרות לתנועה‪ ,‬לריגוש‪ ,‬להליכה על הסף; התמכרות לליבידו של ציור הפעולה; ובעיקר‬ ‫התמכרות לפעלתנות כמחוללת אשליה של הגנה מפני חרדה ואובדן‪ .‬ציוריו מתאפיינים בדחיסות ציורית‪,‬‬ ‫בעומס צורני‪ ,‬בצבעוניות מרוכזת הנעה על כמה קני־מידה‪ .‬למעשה‪ ,‬כל אחד ממרכיבי ציורו מקיים‬ ‫כמה מופעים מקבילים‪ ,‬ובציורים רבים נעשה שימוש בו־זמני בניבים שונים של הציור המודרניסטי‪,‬‬ ‫שקופלר מצטייד בהם כבתחמושת של משחקי מחשב‪ .‬מינימליזם‪ ,‬סוריאליזם‪ ,‬מופשט הבעתי‪ ,‬מופשט‬ ‫לירי‪ ,‬דלות החומר — כל אלה הם ספקי נשק במלחמת הציור הבלתי נגמרת‪ ,‬שמטרתה יצירת חלופה‬ ‫מוצלחת למציאות‪.‬‬ ‫הפסיכואנליטיקאי איתמר לוי כתב פעם על חלום של מטופל‪" :‬כדי להגשים את עצמו כחלום‪ ,‬החלום‬ ‫חייב לבנות לו בית‪ ,‬להפוך מחלום־דרך לחלום־בית‪ ,‬מחלום נדודים לחלום של שיבת הבן האובד‪ .‬לכאורה‬ ‫הסיפור יכול היה להיגמר בבית‪ ,‬אולם החלום שב ונפתח‪ ,‬שב ויוצא לדרך"‪ 4.‬גם הציור של אלעד קופלר‬ ‫יכול היה להיגמר בבית‪ ,‬אבל הוא שב ונפתח — וגם הבתים שבו שבים ונפתחים‪ .‬בכל ציור טמונה הצעה‬ ‫לציורים הבאים‪ ,‬ולכן יש בציורו משהו משפחתי‪ ,‬משהו ישראלי‪ .‬ציוריו הם מין שבט משפחתי גדול‬ ‫והם מולידים זה את זה‪ ,‬נשארים זה בקרבת זה; אין בהם פרידה אלא המשכיות מתמדת‪ ,‬והם מתגוררים‬ ‫בציורים־בתים שקירותיהם שקופים‪ ,‬בבניינים ללא מעטפת‪ ,‬מלאים בחרדה‪ ,‬באהבה‪ ,‬בגעגועים ובדאגה‬ ‫מתמדת שהכל יהיה בסדר‪.‬‬ ‫‪4‬‬

‫המתחלפות בין שתי הצורות הגיאומטריות מחדירות בציור מידה של חוסר יציבות‪ ,‬משהו שנדרך ומזכיר‬ ‫ומחשבות להישמט מטה‪ ,‬והן נראות‬ ‫את המאסה של שתי הצורות הגיאומטריות התלויות בגובה הציור ְ‬ ‫לפתע כגיליוטינות‪.‬‬ ‫נקודות מבט שונות מאכלסות את העבודות של קופלר ויוצרות ריצוד קליידוסקופי של פני שטח‬ ‫ואתגר למבטו המדלג של הצופה‪ .‬שני הכתמים הגיאומטריים בחלקו העליון של הציור ְמשחקים ִמשחקים‬ ‫של חיתוך וחפיפה ושטיחּות‪ ,‬כמו בחידת טנגרם — ובו־בזמן הם מבקרים בארצות ובממדים אחרים‪ ,‬כמו‬ ‫בש ט ו ח ל נ ד י ה של אדווין אבוט‪ .‬הצורות בחלקו התחתון של הציור נראות כיער או חורשה אפלה‪,‬‬ ‫ונוצרת שם תחושה של מרחב דחוס שנדחק למישור הציור הקדמי ונחסם בקיר שחור‪ ,‬חתוך בפס אפור‬ ‫ישר‪ .‬צמחיית היער צבועה בשחור‪ ,‬ירוק־אפור וחום עם הבלחות של כתומים וירוקים בהירים ורעננים‪,‬‬ ‫והכל נראה אפל וכאוטי ורוחש בתוך הציור‪ ,‬כאילו טבע רב־עוצמה ואפל חדר בקלות את הקומפוזיציה‬ ‫המאורגנת ומצא את דרכו אל תוככי הבית‪ .‬במרכז החלק הימני התחתון‪ ,‬מעל סימן קליגרפי בצבע ירוק‬ ‫דשא‪ ,‬שרטט קופלר במשיכת מכחול מהירה צורת נחש מתפתלת‪.‬‬ ‫החוץ החודר פנימה והפנים הפתוח אל החוץ יוצרים בציור של קופלר מצב קבוע של חוסר יציבות‪,‬‬ ‫שבו הכל יכול לנוע פנימה והחוצה בעת ובעונה אחת‪ ,‬לחדור לעומק הציור באחד מפתחיו הרבים ולצאת‬ ‫המזמן למבקר בו הפתעות של עונג ואימה‪ ,‬או כמו ביער‪ .‬הקומפוזיציה‬ ‫במקום אחר‪ ,‬כמו בלונה־פארק ְ‬ ‫המשוכללת של ציור ל ל א כ ו ת ר ת אחר‪ ,‬מ־‪[ 2015‬עמ' ‪ ,]13‬מורכבת מצורות רבועות המארגנות את פני‬ ‫ומסבכות וסורגים המהווים פתחים אל עומק הציור‪.‬‬ ‫השטח‪ְ ,‬‬ ‫בדומה ליחזקאל שטרייכמן‪ ,‬הרב־מג של ציור סורג־החלון הישראלי‪ ,‬קופלר משתמש במשטחים‬ ‫דמויי סורג־חלון להגדרת חלל שאינו ניתן להגדרה‪ ,‬חלל שהוא תווך מופשט בין פנים וחוץ‪ .‬המישור‬ ‫במעלה‬ ‫ֶ‬ ‫הציורי שנוצר בתוך כך נותר תלוי על בלימה‪ ,‬פתוח וסגור‪ ,‬מחניק ונושם‪ .‬בעוד הסבכה האופקית‬ ‫כמתקן נעילה של תא כלא‬ ‫הציור נראית כחלון הנפתח לנוף של גינה — הסבכה המוצלבת מימין נראית ִ‬ ‫מחניק‪ .‬והנה‪ ,‬מאחורי הסורג המוצלב‪ ,‬מאחורי האפור בגון מלט‪ ,‬בסדק שקורע קופלר בציור‪ ,‬מבצבצת‬ ‫עלווה ירוקה‪ .‬צבעי הציור נעים מאור לחושך‪ ,‬מוורוד קאמפי־ילדותי לאפורים של בטונדות צבאיות‪.‬‬ ‫הסורגים הפזורים בכל חלקי הציור נראים כמערך של פיגומים‪ ,‬העולים אל פני השטח ממעמקי הגריד‬ ‫ונותנים חיזוק נוסף לתשתיות הציור‪ ,‬שמאפשרות לקופלר לנוע בתנופה על פני הבד באקטים גופניים‬ ‫מהירים ואינטנסיביים‪.‬‬ ‫כמה מציוריו של קופלר ניחנים בארגון‪ ,‬קומפקטיות דחוסה‪ ,‬וצבעוניות עזה‪ ,‬מודגשת וברורה‪.‬‬ ‫בציורים אחרים‪ ,‬לעומת זאת‪ ,‬נעלמת תחושת המבניּות‪ ,‬הכתמים נעשים אמורפיים יותר והצבעים גולשים‬ ‫לצבעוניות בהירה‪ ,‬חמה ופסטלית; ועדיין‪ ,‬הרכיב המובנה והגיאומטרי לא נעלם כליל‪.‬‬ ‫בציור הצהוב־ורוד ל ל א כ ו ת ר ת מ־‪[ 2017‬עמ' ‪ ,]29 ,12‬הנראה כמו לוח עץ שהונח על ַּכן ציור‬ ‫הנושא את עקבות הציורים שצוירו עליו‪ ,‬מהדהדת עדיין תוכנית של בית — אבל הציור אינו מזמין‬ ‫פנימה; הוא מסרב להיחדר‪ ,‬למרות איזו פתיינות מינית המורגשת בו‪ .‬מלבן שחור מאיים תלוי למעלה‪,‬‬ ‫ובתוכו כתוב משהו באותיות קשות לפיענוח‪ ,‬משהו שדומה למלה "ציור"‪ .‬המלה "ציור" כתובה‬ ‫בשפה־לא־שפה‪ ,‬בשפת כלאיים שבין מילים לבין משיכות מכחול‪ ,‬והיא כלואה בתוך מסגרת שחורה‬ ‫ומציצה החוצה כגלגול ביאליקי של פרח עציץ שכל היום הגנה יציץ‪ .‬מתחת‪ ,‬באלכסון‪ ,‬מריחות ורודות‬

‫כבר ב־‪ 1914‬הבחין פרויד (במאמרו "היזכרות‪ ,‬חזרה ועיבוד") שהסובל מטראומה ממיר את ההיזכרות‬ ‫בשחזּורה הכפייתי במעשים קונקרטיים‪ ,‬באופן לא מילולי‪ 3.‬הפלגה פסיכואנליטית תציע שהגריד‬ ‫בה ִ‬ ‫הקונקרטי‪ ,‬בשכפולו החוזר ונשנה ומשתנה לאורך תולדות האמנות‪ ,‬רומז לחזרתה של טראומה קדמונית‬ ‫כלשהי‪ ,‬או לאפשרות שהאמנות קשורה ביסודה בטראומה ובצורך להיחלץ ממנה‪ .‬אצל קופלר‪ ,‬שהתייתם‬ ‫מאמו כשהיה ילד וגודל על־ידי אב שהפך בשברון לבו לחסר־בית‪ ,‬הבית הוא מושא געגועים נצחי‪ ,‬הוא‬ ‫השחזּור הכפייתי בציוריו‪ .‬את ציוריו — העשויים בשכבות צבע עבות‪ ,‬מהירות וצבעוניות ומצטטים את‬ ‫ִ‬ ‫הסגנונות השונים של האבות והאמהות של המודרניזם — אפשר לראות כמין אימוץ הפוך‪ :‬הבן הוא‬ ‫שמאמץ לעצמו הורים‪ ,‬בפרקטיקה של הישרדות וחיפוש אחר בית ומשפחה‪.‬‬ ‫ברישומים של קופלר‪ ,‬שכמה מהם מוצגים בתערוכה‪ ,‬אפשר לראות דימויים של בית בכמה מופעים‪:‬‬ ‫כתוכנית רצפה‪ ,‬כבית ארגז או חממה‪ ,‬כבית עץ‪ ,‬ועוד‪ .‬בשני רישומי בית הנראים כאן‪ ,‬מופיע גם מוטיב‬ ‫של עץ‪ :‬פעם כענפים מצוירים בתוך תוכנית רצפה; פעם כעץ הצומח מתוך ארגז־חממה; ופעם נוספת כעץ‬ ‫הגדל בצמוד לבית עץ על כלונסאות [עמ' ‪ .]6‬הבית והעץ הם עוגן ציורי ותחבירי שמופיע גם בציורי הצבע‪,‬‬ ‫שם הם חוזרים בווריאציות שונות‪.‬‬ ‫הדמיון התוכני והקומפוזיציוני בין הציור ל ל א כ ו ת ר ת מ־‪[ 2015‬עמ' ‪ ]10‬לבין רישום מ־‪2015‬‬ ‫[עמ' ‪ ,]6‬נסמך על ההבחנה שהכתם הטרפזי האפור בצד הימני העליון — שנראה כגג המשתפל באלכסון‬ ‫כלפי מטה ומטיל צל על חלקו הימני התחתון של הציור — כמעט זהה בצורתו לגג הבית שברישום‪.‬‬ ‫בצד שמאל של הציור‪ ,‬כמו ברישום‪ ,‬מצויר עץ גדול‪ ,‬שחלקו העליון ממוסך בריבוע ורוד־כתום ודרכו‬ ‫מציצה צמרת העץ עם ענפים מתפצלים‪ .‬בין הטרפז של הכתם האפור לריבוע של הכתם הכתום מצטלבים‬ ‫שני משולשים‪ ,‬העליון שחור והתחתון לבן‪ ,‬במין תרגיל של זוויות מתחלפות בהנדסת המישור‪ .‬הזוויות‬

‫הצופה — את הפן הסתום של המודרניזם‪ ,‬את לשון הקווים והצורות והצבעים שלא נועדו להיתרגם לטקסט‬ ‫מילולי‪ .‬והרי אלעד קופלר‪ ,‬צייר בן ‪( 43‬נולד ב־‪ ,)1974‬אינו מודרניסט אלא פוסט־מודרניסט; וה"פוסט"‬ ‫הזה — וקופלר דרכו — מביט במודרניזם מתוך מודעּות לפעולות של ציטוט‪ ,‬שיעתוק וניכוס‪ ,‬ומרשה‬ ‫לעצמו לצטט‪ ,‬במודע ושלא במודע‪ ,‬את יצירות האמנות שראה‪ ,‬קלט והטמיע במהלך חייו‪.‬‬ ‫בתוך הקרנבל הציורי הרועש והמשחקי הזה‪ ,‬רב המחוות והציטוטים‪ ,‬קופלר פותח פתחים‪ ,‬חלונות‬ ‫ושערים שדרכם אפשר להביט אל לב הציור שלו‪ ,‬אל נשמת הדבר‪ ,‬אל מקומות קשים ומסוכנים‬ ‫וטראומטיים‪ .‬כי בעומק הציוריות והצבעוניות העולצת של קופלר שוכנת אימה חשכה‪ ,‬שבלעדיה אין‬ ‫להבין את ציוריו‪ .‬פתחים כאלה מפוזרים בכל ציוריו ומתכנסים בבהירות סביב נושאים כ"בית"‪" ,‬עץ"‬ ‫ו"חלון"‪ ,‬ונושאים אחרים (ברמות שונות של מובחנּות) שחוזרים בהם בעקביות‪.‬‬ ‫יש ועבודותיו של קופלר מתחילות ברישום של גריד על הבד‪ .‬הגריד‪ ,‬רשת של קווי שתי־וערב‪ ,‬הוא‬ ‫הפרדיגמה של המודרניזם במופעו המינימליסטי‪ .‬אך חרף היותו הסמל הנזירי והחמור של המודרניזם‬ ‫העלי בשיאו‪ ,‬הגריד לא נעלם בימי ה"פוסט" אלא הסתגל להם והטמיע את מאפייניו בינות לדימויים‬ ‫ִ‬ ‫ולמחוות הציטוט‪ ,‬שכמו כיסו או בלעו אותו אל תוכם‪ .‬אצל קופלר‪ ,‬הגריד הוא מעשה תשבץ‪ .‬קווי‬ ‫השתי־והערב שלו אינם נמתחים כמו בגריד הקלאסי מקצה הבד אל קצהו‪ :‬אצלו הוא בנוי מריבועים־‬ ‫ריבועים‪ ,‬המתחברים זה לזה ליצירת משטח מוגדר ומאורגן מתמטית‪ ,‬שעליו יושב הציור — אלא ששם‪,‬‬ ‫במקום המפגש הזה‪ ,‬הם גם מתנגשים‪ .‬יש פער אידיאי בין מצע הציור לבין הציור עצמו‪ ,‬בין מרכב הציור‬ ‫המודרניסטי לבין שלדת הציור הפוסט־מודרניסטית‪ .‬מבחינה ציורית‪ ,‬מבחינת ההשתייכות ההיסטורית‪,‬‬ ‫האידיאולוגית והסגנונית‪ ,‬מדובר בהתנגשות שיש עמה סתירה‪ :‬המורד מתרפק על בעל הסמכות‪ ,‬נכרך‬ ‫סביבו‪ ,‬ומבקש ממנו הגנה‪.‬‬ ‫בתיכון למד קופלר במגמת אדריכלות‪ ,‬ושרטוט של תוכניות רצפה נכלל בתוכנית הלימודים‪ .‬בהמשך‬ ‫העבודה על הציור נעלם רישום הגריד מתחת לשכבות הצבע‪ ,‬כשם שגם התוכנית האדריכלית נבלעת‬ ‫ביסודות הבית הנבנה‪ .‬אבל הגריד נמצא שם‪ ,‬כשומר סמוי המסמן את גבולות הציור‪ ,‬את החופש המוגבל‬ ‫על־ידי חוקי האמנות‪ .‬הדיאלקטיקה של סדר ואי־סדר‪ ,‬משמעת ופריקת עול‪ ,‬עולה בציוריו של קופלר אל‬ ‫פני השטח ומתארגנת בהם מחדש‪ .‬הגריד הנוכח בעומק הציור כמו מהדהד את "שם האב"‪ ,‬שמסמן את‬ ‫גבולות החוק אך גם את הדחף להפר אותו‪.‬‬

‫מבקר האמנות האמריקאי מייקל פריד טען שהגריד מחדיר במודרניזם אלמנטים תיאטרליים‪ ,‬יוצר‬ ‫קונקרטיזציה של החלל ומציף את הכאן־ועכשיו במקום את הזמן הטרנסצנדנטי של הציור המופשט‬ ‫המודרניסטי‪ 2.‬פריד התייחס בעיקר למופעי הפיסול המינימליסטיים ופחות לגריד הציורי‪ ,‬אבל אפשר‬ ‫לשאול ממנו את מושגי הקונקרטיות והכאן־ועכשיו כדי להתבונן במחוות הציורית ובתנועות הגדולות‬ ‫של קופלר‪ ,‬שתכונות אלו של הגריד מחזירות אותו "הביתה" — אל תוכניות הרצפה של הבתים הדמיוניים‬ ‫ששרטט כנער ושבהם מעולם לא גר‪ ,‬אל הבית שבו הוא מתגורר כיום והבניינים המקיפים את הסטודיו‬ ‫שלו‪ ,‬ובעיקר אל הבית שלא היה לו כשהיה ילד‪.‬‬

‫יכולותיו הציוריות של אלעד קופלר אינן מוטלות בספק‪ ,‬והוא מן האמנים הנדירים שניסחו לעצמם שפה‬ ‫ציורית ייחודית ומזוהה‪ .‬לאחרונה חל שינוי מהותי בעבודתו‪ ,‬ושינוי זה ניכר היטב בתערוכה הנוכחית‪:‬‬ ‫מסתמן שהאמן הצליח להתגבר על חרדות שרדפו אותו‪ ,‬והדבר בא לידי ביטוי במבע הציורי שלו‪.‬‬ ‫בביקור הסטודיו הראשון שערכתי אצל קופלר ב־‪ ,2012‬בהמלצת האוצרת שרית שפירא‪ ,‬העפתי‬ ‫מבט מהיר על עבודותיו הגדולות והחזקות‪ ,‬שהיו סגורות וגדושות בקיצוניות‪" .‬פתח אותן"‪ ,‬אמרתי‪,‬‬ ‫והוא הקשיב‪ .‬העבודות המרשימות שראיתי אז לנגד עיני היו השלכה ישירה של מנגנון הגנה נוקשה‪,‬‬ ‫פועל־יוצא מן החרדות שהציפו אותו‪ .‬השינוי הגדול שהצליח לחולל מאז הביא לתוצאות מפתיעות‪ :‬רוך‬ ‫ואופטימיות מציפים את פני השטח ברגשות אנושיים חיוביים‪ ,‬ברּכּות של קווים ושל צבעים מנוגדים‪,‬‬ ‫ובעיקר בשקיפות נפלאה‪.‬‬ ‫בביקורי השני נפעמתי מן השינוי‪ ,‬ובביקורי השלישי כבר הבנתי שהשינוי המהותי הזה אכן יציב‬ ‫וקיים‪ .‬בעבר שיתף אותנו קופלר בתחושות של פחד וחרדה נוכח מופעים של הרס וחורבן‪ ,‬שביניהן‬ ‫ביצבצה מעט אופטימיות‪ .‬כעת הוא משתף אותנו בעולם של בריאה ולא של הרס‪ ,‬תוך שימוש זניח בצבע‬ ‫השחור שכיכב בעבר‪ .‬הקוטביות והאובססיה הוחלפו באסתטיקה של אופטימיות והרמוניה‪.‬‬ ‫לרגל יריד ‪ VOTLA‬ניו־יורק ב־‪ ,2016‬תיאר קופלר את עבודותיו במונחים אוניברסליים ונמנע‬ ‫מקשירת מהלכי האמנות שלו לשושלות המקומיות של האמנות הישראלית‪ .‬מאז‪ ,‬לצד השינוי שתיארתי‬ ‫לעיל‪ ,‬ביסס קופלר מודעּות למיקומו ברצף של מהלכי‬ ‫האמנות הישראלית ביחס לאור ולנוף המקומיים‪ ,‬תוך ניסוח‬ ‫מדויק ובוטח של ייחודו האישי וה"צייטגייסט" של דורו‪ .‬שני‬ ‫שינויים מהותיים וחשובים אלה הזניקו את עבודתו אל אופקים‬ ‫חדשים; וכאן כוונתי גם לקבוצת "אופקים חדשים"‪ ,‬שהאמנים‬ ‫המרכזיים בה — זריצקי‪ ,‬שטרייכמן‪ ,‬סטמצקי ומאירוביץ'‪— ‬‬ ‫שיכללו אסתטיקה של שקיפּות בתקופה מאוחרת יחסית‬ ‫בעבודתם‪ ,‬ועבודות מאוחרות אלו (שתחילה סברו כי הן‬ ‫נופלות באיכותן מן העבודות המוקדמות) ניצבות כיום‬ ‫במקום של כבוד בפנתאון האמנות הישראלית‪.‬‬ ‫אני מברך את מוניקה לביא‪ ,‬מנהלת ואוצרת ראשית של‬ ‫מוזיאון נחום גוטמן לאמנות‪ ,‬שהשכילה לבחור את המיטב‬ ‫מבין עבודותיו החדשות של קופלר‪ ,‬המסמנות את השינוי‬ ‫המעניין שחל אצלו לאחרונה‪.‬‬ ‫>‬
