Welcome to Summer Dear Reader Welcome to our summer issue, as the year races ahead, it’s hard to believe it but the school holidays will soon be upon us and we’ll able to get out and about and enjoy the summer months with our families and friends.

As always there is plenty happening throughout Cheshire to keep us all busy and entertained. Kate Nield and her son Henry had a day out in Buxton and had great fun exploring the town on the Little Red Tram. This month it’s the Football World Cup in Brazil and once again most of us will be wearing our hearts on our sleeves hoping that England does well and avoids any penalty shoot outs – John Freeman is just such a fan – he’s tells us what it’s like from a Dad’s Eye View! Nicola Foster tells of her desperate attempt to get a romantic weekend away without the children, with amusing consequences as usual! Perfect for the summer, photographer Jane Burkinshaw gives us her Top 10 Tips for taking photographs of children, and Victoria Pollitt writes about her family holiday in the Canary Islands.

We have a bumper days out and events section, full of things to enjoy with a huge variety of events, shows, theatre, museums, crafts and activities and a special look at local festivals. Come rain or shine there’s sure to be plenty to keep your family busy over the summer. Summer Reads By Sue Steel

Hello again from simply books!

I like to think of our shop as a ‘palace of possibility’ ...a place where books aren’t just sold but are discovered. Today was our ‘Book Factor’ 2014 Finale – our search to find a story that would capture the imaginations of children is finally over. Just like the X Factor the books have been through auditions and boot camp, been read and enjoyed in homes and classrooms and finally been put to the vote!

The winner is a book I’ve reviewed here before, ‘Harry and the Jaggedy Daggers’, and excitingly the author/illustrator, Jan Fearnley, has a brand new story in the same picturesque seaside setting of Bottlenose Bay. ‘Light-fingered Larry’ is an octopus who likes nothing better than sneaking about pinching other people’s stuff. He’s slippery and sly but when he steals everything from Kiki Koala’s kitchen he’s in for a bit of a surprise .... With vibrant watercolour illustrations, this is a lively adventure story to read over and over again.

Here are a couple of stories for sharing, which I guarantee will also keep them occupied and entertained by themselves, so perfect for packing in a suitcase! What would you do if you were settling down for a quiet bedtime story and you realised that a crocodile had fallen out of one story and into yours! Find out in ‘Open very Carefully – A Book with Bite! by Nicola O’Byrne & Nick Bromley. This grumpy croc proceeds to eat his way out as he tries to escape a storybook that is all wrong for him but is great fun for the reader! Perfect for discussing how words and pictures work together. The drawings of the croc are tremendously expressive, and there’s lots to be discussed about the cute Ugly Duckling, who appears on every page. This really is a brilliant book!

‘How to Wash a Woolly Mammoth’ by Michelle Robinson and Kate Hindley starts with a bath tub and ends with some mammoth cuddling! Cute and hilarious this is a step by step guide to washing your own woolly mammoth. The illustrations brilliantly capture the mammoth - from panic when the soap goes in his eyes, to happiness and contentment when he’s out of the bath and snugly wrapped in a towel. With funny mammoth bathroom products on the back cover - ranging from tusk whitener to curl tamer - this book might just persuade any child with an aversion to bath time that having a wash isn’t so bad after all!

And finally, a pick for ‘dads’ this time with Father’s Day in mind.

‘The Snowden Files’ by Guardian journalist Luke Harding is a real life spy thriller about the ex-CIA agent who blew the whistle on the way in which governments snoop on us all...

Explore Cheshire and take the Xplorer Challenge Cheshire is the place to be this summer to get out and explore the great outdoors! The all new Xplorer events are a great way for families to keep active and have fun and the team have been working hard to bring an exciting programme of events to the Parks near you.

Xplorer is a family friendly navigation challenge that is educational, fun and gives children a sense of adventure as they explore the park to find the markers. It involves a healthy mix of physical activity and decision making that the whole family can enjoy together.

Using a simple map the aim is to find a number of markers that are located around the park. At each marker children need to identify what it is that is pictured and enjoy learning a fun fact to tell their friends. Xplorer is perfect for children as they can have an adventure whilst running around in a safe and friendly environment. No experience of map reading is necessary and parents are encouraged to join in the fun exploring together as a family.

The Ups and Downs of Parenting

It wasn’t meant to be... By Nicola Foster I am a big fan of “sayings” and often use “perhaps it’s not meant to be”, as a consolatory remark when something hasn’t worked out and hopefully something better will come along. I had never experienced a situation where something was literally “not meant to be”... until last month.

My parents-in-law recently decided to downsize and put their house on the market. At the forefront of the childrens’ father’s mind was “let’s get a couple of nights away by ourselves before they move”. He wasted no time in booking them in to have the children for two nights and booking ourselves into a hotel in Yorkshire.

As the break drew closer, I grew increasingly giddy at the prospect of a bit of time together, uninterrupted sleep, nice food, normal conversations and not being woken before I am ready - by either a child or the alarm clock with its siren of hell. A week before we were due to go, we had our first clue that our trip was “not meant to be”. As the 9 year old and I trotted back to the car after school, he chirped “I’ve got a letter. It’s good news. We get a day off next week ‘cos the teachers are having a stroke”. I nearly had a stroke at that point and delayed explaining that it was actually called a “strike” until I had retrieved the letter. This confirmed my worst fears that it was set to take place on the first day of our break, which meant we had to find somebody to look after him during the day. The childrens’ father called his mum and after some good old fashioned begging, she agreed to look after him. As they were now due to move house twelve days later, this was a big ask.

Our second clue came the following day. The childrens’ father’s phoned. His opening line was; “you are not going to believe this”.

In my experience, good news never follows those words and this was no exception. Apparently the hotel had been in touch to say the National Grid were carrying out something essential on the Thursday of our trip and the hotel would be without power all day, from 7am. Feeling somewhat deflated, we decided to cancel the booking, concluding if we wanted to be up and out by 7am, we can stay at home and do that for free. We began to consider the possibility our trip was perhaps doomed.

After a day or two of dithering, we took one final plunge and booked a hotel in the Lakes and I started to pack. My over packing habit is a standing joke and on this occasion was made worse by my trying to be helpful. I wanted to make things easy for my in-laws so they didn’t have to worry about washing or finding uniforms, so there were three sets of everything for three children for three days. This included clean PE kits, hockey sticks, tennis racquets, several pairs of trainers and football boots and stuff for packed lunches together with a booklet detailing who had to be where, at what time, with whom and carrying what. I think this was appreciated, but I did see a look of what I think was despair flash across my father-in-law’s face as I dumped about 83 bags into a house which they were trying to empty.

Foolishly believing we were home and dry now, we set off for the Lakes. With the benefit of hindsight, I would have chatted a bit more on the journey up as it would turn out to be the only chance we would get, but instead we enjoyed the silence.

After a spot of lunch we checked into our hotel but, despite me not having had a mobile signal since Windermere, there was no such problem for the childrens’ father’. No sooner were we shown to our room, he took a phone call which signaled the final curtain close on our break. Unforeseen and unexpected circumstances meant he had to be in London the following morning and instead of having the hot stone neck massage I had booked, he spent the next 2 hours with his phone wedged into his neck and tapping away on the laptop whilst making a series of animatedly apologetic faces at me from the other side of the room. I did get to read my book, but not in the bath with a bottle of Prosecco as I had envisaged.

Almost exactly three hours after we arrived, we were back in the car heading home. A journey spent with me reading out and replying to e-mails which stopped me from dwelling too much on my un-drunk Prosecco, lovely dinner and uninterrupted sleep which had been so cruelly whipped from under my nose. We did manage to have dinner together - a chicken fried rice take-away, which was shoveled down in the 10 minutes between arriving home and dropping the childrens’ father at the station to catch the 8.20pm to London. I have now come up with a new mantra, which I hope I never have cause to use again. Unlike the saying; “it is better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all”, I can emphatically state “It is worse to go away and come back early, than never to have gone at all”.

A Dad’s Eye View On: England in the World Cup

By John Freeman It’s that time again. It happens at best - if you consider it a blessing - once every four years and lasts a few short weeks before ending in the recurring nightmare of a tragic penalty shoot out. Yep, the England football team are about to embark on another World Cup adventure.

For those of a certain age - and you’d need to be in your mid-50s at the very least for this to apply - the World Cup will be forever associated with a glorious day in 1966 and a Geoff Hurst hat-trick that sealed England’s only ever victory.

Sadly, I’m too young to have witnessed such a triumph and so, like millions of others, my memories of supporting England in World Cups is one of blinkered optimism, followed by a crushing reality and the shocking inability of an English footballer to score from the penalty spot.

It always starts with a slug of wide-eyed optimism. This time could just be ‘our’ year. The country is suddenly festooned with a patriotic display of St George’s flags as a nation unites behind - what my mother infamously describes - as ‘11 silly men chasing a bag of air about’.

But before we get to the actual competition time we have to endure the usually horrific World Cup song. If England’s footballers are particularly inept at taking penalties they sure as hell cannot sing, even if the 1990 effort - New Order’s ‘World In Motion’ - was at least a decent song. Also, there is the chance to start collecting World Cup stickers (for the kids – obviously) and the doomed pursuit of a completed sticker album.

And then the tournament begins and even the most ardent football hater will probably find themselves watching at least one of England’s matches. A familiar pattern then emerges; England scrape through the group stages before losing to the first semi-competent team they face on penalties. Always on penalties. It’s as predictable as night follows day. Beery tears then flow while the nation collectively asks why it is so hard for an Englishman to kick a ball into a goal from 12 yards away.

It’s a fair question.

But, we love a plucky loser and whether it’s Gazza’s tears, Beckham and Rooney getting sent off or Diego Maradona and his Hand of God, England’s World Cup exploits always seem to provide iconic memories.

This year’s tournament is in Brazil and, for once, no one is expecting England to win the trophy or - having been drawn with Italy, Uruguay and Costa Rica - to even progress through the group stages. But, it won’t stop everyone secretly dreaming of the impossible...

Enjoy the great outdoors this summer At The Earth Skills Project (TESP) their main aim is to engage and encourage people to get outside and play by creating fun, exciting, stimulating and practical ways for all ages and abilities to learn about the wonderful world outdoors.

Founder of the Joshua Tree named as Cheshire Woman of the Year Lynda Hill, Founder and CEO of Northwich children’s cancer charity The Joshua Tree has been named the Cheshire Woman of the Year. Lynda received her award for the courage and determination she has displayed in setting up the charity to support families of children with cancer and leukaemia.

Since setting up The Joshua Tree charity, Lynda has spent the past eight years raising money and promoting awareness of the project to build a holiday home for families of children with cancer and other immune suppressant illnesses, a place where they can relax and receive respite from the trauma of treatment. The charity has already set up an interim support centre that offers families support and advice which is welcoming new families every week.

“Of course, it is a great privilege to be nominated and then receive this award for doing something which is so close to my heart and which has a positive impact on Cheshire families living through childhood cancers and leukaemia.What we experienced as a family when our son Josh received treatment for leukaemia made us determined to ensure that no family has to suffer the isolation that the treatment of the illness can bring” said Lynda “Building The Joshua Tree Holiday House and Support Centre will ensure that every family member can be supported and escape the confines of cancer treatment - even if only for a few days. The whole family, including siblings need a break from being ‘carers’ as much as the child undergoing treatment needs a break from the hospital wards. By building our holiday house in the heart of the Cheshire countryside we hope to create a tranquil, fun, family space that is very much needed.”

Since 1985 over two thousand nominated women have been invited to enjoy their special day. The event has also raised £270,000 for children’s charities, for Barnardos between 1985 -1994 and for the NSPCC since 1995.

10 top tips for taking great photos of your children this summer Are you sometimes disappointed with the pictures you’ve taken on holiday or a recent day out? Do you find that some faces are in shadow or squinting?

That your children have turned away before the picture could be taken or the subject is too far away and could be anyone. Professional photographer Jane Burkinshaw give us some simple tequiniques to avoid the pitfalls.

1. Where possible take photographs in the shade. In the shade of an umbrella, a building, a doorway. Although sunny days are lovely it means that the light outside is very bright and shadows are very dark. Our eyes are used to evening out the harsh contrasts but a camera records the scene as it is. Hats, sunglasses, even our own noses can cast dark, ugly shadows across our faces when we’re in direct sunlight. Overcast days are the best for photographing people so don’t leave your camera at home just because the sun isn’t shining!

2. Use your flash in bright sunshine. It’s not always possible to find shade. In this situation the best thing you can do is switch your flash on, either by popping it up or setting it to “Forced Flash On”, depending on the type of camera. The flash fills in those ugly shadows and although the picture may look slightly artificial, it gives a better result. Also, if it’s extremely bright behind your subject then using the flash will ensure they are not in darkness.

3. Don’t make the kids squint into the sun. If the sun is directly behind you, chances are it’s shining right in their eyes. Take the picture from a different angle and you’ll get beautiful, big eyes, instead of little squinty ones!

4. Change your angle. Especially with small children and babies. You need to get down on their level and even shoot upwards at them to capture their expressions. Small children tend to concentrate fiercely when they are playing and if you ask them to stop and smile, they do it so quickly that it’s impossible to catch. I prefer to get down low, where I can see their faces and watch and wait for the right moment.

5. No more cheese! All kids go through a stage where their “photo” smile is cheesy – all teeth and screwed up eyes. If you want natural smiles and expressions you’re going to have to make them laugh by saying something silly or slightly rude! Or just watch them whilst they’re engrossed in whatever they’re doing, keep a distance and use your camera’s zoom lens to take candid shots.

6. Zoom, zoom, zoom! Zooming in has the added advantage of blurring the background and making them stand out more.

You can also zoom in to fill the frame (the picture you see in the viewfinder) with your subject and exclude any boring background.

Don’t be afraid, with close ups, to crop out tops of heads or parts of the body, if you’re capturing that gorgeous smile or sulky pout.

7. Use Sports Mode to freeze action. This setting actually works best on bright days, so if your kids are racing about or splashing in the sea, use this to freeze their movement. On most cameras this will also let you take a number of shots in quick succession, just by holding your finger down on the shutter. If it doesn’t then find the “Continuous Shooting Mode” on your camera and use that.

8. Use fun props to keep the kids interested. For small children and babies I find that little bottles of bubbles work wonders. Use the Sports Mode as toddlers will chase every bubble or put a bowl of water in a shady area and some plastic cups and then just watch as the action unfolds! With slightly older children bubble wands produce amazing colours. I try to do in the early evening, when the sunlight is softer.

9. Use the self timer (on cameras) or the front facing camera (on smart phones) to ensure that you get in on the action too. I’ve got to the end of far too many summers and realised I’m hardly in any of our photos. Although I didn’t mind at the time I know I’ll regret it in years to come and so will the kids.

10. And finally: have your camera at the ready! Always leave it out within easy reach so that you can grab it and capture some amazing memories!

All aboard the little red tram

It was a Sunny Bank Holiday Monday and we were looking for somewhere new to visit. Following a friend’s recommendation we decided on a trip to Buxton and once we arrived we headed straight to the town centre.

It was the day of the Spring Fair and the town was full of people visiting the many stalls and taking part in a huge number of activities from sack races to bubble making. As we made our way around the town Henry had lots of fun taking part in the bubble making, sitting in the Fire engine and having a go on the tombola.

We then approached the Opera House and Henry’s eyes lit up as soon as he saw the little red tram.

Once a milk float it has been converted to look like a Victorian Tram and really is a sight to behold.

At £6 for adults and £4 for children it is a great way to get around Buxton and to see the sights it has to offer. On the tram’s tour of higher and lower Buxton it takes you past the old Royal Devonshire hospital, the Crescent and up to Poole’s Cavern where you can receive a 25% discount on entry with your tram ticket.

For Henry the excitement of the journey started straightaway as our driver Nick employed Henry as his clippy. Once all the tickets were clipped and everyone had taken their seats we set off on our tour.

Nick was great fun showing us all the main sights but also sharing funny anecdotes and stories of Mary Queen of Scots along the way.There really is something for everyone young and old.

When we eventually arrived back at the Opera House we were disappointed that our tour of the town was over but we were also excited to explore what else Buxton had to offer. The tour had given us some great ideas of where to visit next so off we went. We headed first to the Pavilion Gardens where we fed the friendly ducks and geese and took a ride aboard the miniature railway. We then paid a visit to the Buxton Museum and Art Gallery which, although small, has some great exhibits and is completely free. There are a number of displays of fossils and other interesting artefacts as well as a microscope which can be used to look at the artefacts close up.

Sadly the end of the day came too soon and we had to commence battle with the Bank Holiday traffic to head home. We will definitely be visiting Buxton again to see what else it has to offer and, if Henry has his way, to take another trip aboard the little red tram.

Enjoy South Cheshire’s Big Day Out! On Saturday 2nd August from 2pm - 8pm, Dorfold Park, Nantwich will come alive for South Cheshire’s Big Day Out! Redshift Radio, Wulvern Housing and St Marys Church Nantwich are holding a summer extravaganza which promises to be a great day out for everyone to enjoy come rain or shine!

To tie in with the centenary of the First World War, the event will celebrate 100 years of South Cheshire’s vibrant community!

There’s something for all ages so why not get together with family and friends, take a picnic and join in the fun? You can pre-book a table for £50, which will informally sit up to 12 people or turn up on the day and pay £5 per adult/ £3 per child.

Once inside all the activities and entertainment will be free and for the little ones include Jo Jingles, Zoo2U, Nantwich Young Voices, Kidzkitchen, face painting, circus skills, balloon modelling and magicians. For the grown-ups there’s cheese and wine tasting, pamper treats, the big fat pub quiz, cinema zone, photo booth, live bands, Nantwich Young Voices, dance performances, the South Cheshire ‘selfie’ competition and much more.

This is a not for profit event which is kindly being supported by Little Tigers, Nantwich Agricultural Society as well as local businesses across South Cheshire, so go along for a fantastic afternoon out and support your local community.

Free Cakes for Kids: Making a difference one cake at a time What would a birthday be without a cake? A group of volunteer bakers in Macclesfield have taken up this challenge and started Free Cakes for Kids Macclesfield. Put simply, Free Cakes for Kids is a community service to families who find it difficult to provide a birthday cake. By matching families and enthusiastic local volunteers, the group makes sure that every child receives the cake that it deserves. The service is free, friendly and confidential. Volunteers help families provide a birthday cake for their child by baking homemade birthday cakes. They decorate the cake with the child’s favourite theme or style, be it a Peppa Pig Cake or a rocket-shaped sponge cake.

The project was the inspiration of Henriette Lundgren, who started the first Free Cakes for Kids group in Oxford in 2008 after reading about a similar project in America. Since then local groups have been starting up all over the UK, entirely coordinated by volunteers. There are more than 70 Free Cakes for Kids groups across the UK. Free Cakes for kids Macclesfield is looking for partner organisations (such as food banks or refuges) to find more families in need. New Franchisee for Little Superstars Little Superstars Sports Club is pleased to welcome their new franchisee Rebecca Shore to the team. Rebecca will be operating the Mid-Cheshire area and has classes up and running in Knutsford, Northwich, Tarvin and Sandbach.

Rebecca works as a pre-school swimming teacher, and decided to join Little Superstars when she was looking for activities to enjoy with her young son Spencer. She has a business degree along with a2 level physical education and felt that it was an ideal opportunity to put her education and knowledge of teaching under 5s to good practice. Rebecca will be running under 5 sport sessions, nursery and pre-school sessions along with sports birthday parties.

On the Road By Victoria Pollitt This issue Victoria Pollitt writes about her family holiday to the Canary Islands. Victoria and her family stayed at the ClubHotel Riu Gran Canaria, Maspalomas and flew there with Thomas Cook Airlines.

Our cases are open on the floor at Manchester Airport and we are frantically moving belongings about and trying to lose excess baggage. It is not the ideal start to our break but we hadn’t foreseen Thomas Cook’ s vigilance over their 5kg hand luggage allowance. It took some of the shine off our bargain last-minute flights, so check before you pack to avoid an extra charge. But soon we were on the aeroplane with our excited three-year-old son Josh, headed for Gran Canaria. We stayed at the ClubHotel Riu Gran Canaria, a recently-renovated large, sprawling complex with over 600 rooms.

Our suite was gorgeous - modern and clean - with a large balcony overlooking the sea. It was near to the fabulous and imaginative children’s pool with lots of slides and fun to be had. As it was outside school holidays, it was largely and luxuriously empty, although that may have been because it wasn’t heated, so also rather chilly. Thankfully, one of the two large pools in the middle was heated as was the beautiful infinity pool with its glorious views through palm trees and across the Atlantic Ocean.

The hotel is all-inclusive and the food was wonderful - I was amazed at the restraint showed by our fellow guests! It is all buffet-style and the main, large restaurant couldn’t help but have a school canteen feel so we spent most of our meals at the smaller restaurants, especially a lovely one which overlooked the sea.

There’s a RiuLand Club for children aged four to twelve and, although younger, Josh wanted to try it out - we stayed with him and he loved it. He was also thrilled with the evenings when the energetic entertainers lead music and dancing for the excited children. The hotel’s only slight downside is the 10-minute walk to the beach but it’s along a pleasant promenade next to the sea.

However lovely the hotel, it’s still nice to get out and about and Gran Canaria has some great trips for families. We enjoyed a memorable day out at Palmitos Park, a beautiful spot nestled among the mountains.This zoological and botanical park has exotic birds, animals and flowers to enjoy.The highlight was a dolphin show - I’ve never seen Josh so excited.

We also tried out a camel ride, which delighted Josh, although I (pregnant and watching safely from the ground) had some concerns for the camels who were chained together.

Other activities on the island include an aqua park and boat trips. And if you’re still feeling energetic there are lots of sports to take part in back at the hotel, including table tennis, bowls, football, aerobics and volleyball. There’s also a gym and an art studio.

The flight back was great although I did get hit on the head by luggage lifted down by a passenger when we landed. Back to earth with a bump and this time I was grateful for that 5kg hand luggage limit.
