Editor’s Diary Dear Reader, Welcome to our autumn issue of Little Tigers. It’s hard to believe that autumn is upon us once more. The summer holidays were over all too quickly and 2015 seems to be flying by in the wink of an eye. Autumn truly is a lovely time of year, it’s a time of change both in the garden and the countryside as the warm reds, yellows and browns of autumn take hold and a time of change for many of us and our little ones, as they start their own new adventure, at school or nursery.

There is always plenty to do in the autumn it really is a very a busy season and you’ll find lots of ideas in our days out and events section for things to do and see this Halloween, Bonfire Night and throughout the next few months.

In this issue you will find some lovely articles for you to enjoy. John Freeman reminisces about the joys of collecting and playing conkers in ‘A Dads Eye View’. Nicola Foster tells us all about the joys of Halloween in the Foster House in ‘The Ups and Downs of Parenting’ and Kate Neild and her family had a great day out the Cotebrook Shire Horse Centre in ‘Adventures of a Guilty Mum and her Son’.

Autumn Reads By Sue Steel Autumn always brings a bumper crop of new books and this year is no exception. I’ve been having great fun reading all the picture books and it strikes me as always that the combination of words and pictures is what makes a picture book so special. Both bits need to be right. So here are my winning combinations …

It’s fifteen years since Lauren Child wrote her first Charlie and Lola book and she’s marking the occasion with a brand new story ‘One Thing’. Charlie and Lola return in a perfectly formed picture book that sees top negotiator Lola take on numbers in everyday life and bend them to her endearing and unique will. For me this is vintage Lauren Child … quirky, imaginative and a visual joy - and of course a storyline that every parent will identify with!

First published ten years ago, Emily Gravett’s witty story of a wily wolf was a complete sensation and won her the Kate Greenaway Medal for illustration. It contains excellent advice for rabbits on how to spot the danger of wolves with two alternative endings to choose from …yes you can guess! The anniversary edition of ‘Wolves’ comes either as a paperback with an additional mini book to cut out and keep, or as a hardback with a wraparound wolf cover and a rabbit/wolfy game on the reverse side. A lovely gift!

Illustrator Lydia Monks has teamed up again with Julia Donaldson to produce a sequel to their best-selling book What the Ladybird Heard. In ‘What the Ladybird Heard Next’ those rascally robbers are up to no good again – this time stealing chickens! Brilliant to read aloud and great fun for children spotting that glittery ladybird listening in…

I love Oliver Jeffers’ books and his latest collaboration with Drew Daywalt has produced a companion book every bit as funny and child-friendly as their best selling The Day the Crayons Quit. In the ‘The Day the Crayons came Home’ Duncan is faced with a crowd of crayons all with stories to tell and desperate to get home to the crayon box.

Talking of crayons, the adult craze for colouring knows no end. So now everyone’s colouring! So if you need to de-stress try the handbag-sized ‘Mindfulness Colouring Book’. Art therapy for busy people!

Adventures of a Guilty Mum & her Son

A Sunny Day at the Shire Horse Centre

By Kate Nield Most little ones love animals and my little boy (maybe not so little!) is no exception. Whenever we are out and about walking our dog, he loves to stop and look at the horses, and so when I heard about the Cotebrook Shire Horse Centre and Country Park, I thought it would be the perfect day out.

Located in Cotebrook, near Tarporley, the centre itself is easy enough to find being just on the A49 with plenty of parking outside. As you enter you pay for your tickets at the desk (£7.95 Adults, £5.95 Children, Under 4s free); but before you visit check out their website, as they regularly have excellent offers available. Once you have paid your entrance fee, the children are given a lovely colourful map of the centre, which caused no end of excitement for H and his little friend Ava. We entered the centre via the stables, where a very proud looking Shire Horse was standing in a small paddock. This in itself was very exciting for the little ones, but nothing had quite prepared us for what would happen next. As we crossed the farmyard 10 piglets ran out in front of us, then around us squealing away, before they darted back under the fence to their pig sty, back to a very tired looking mummy pig. It made our day they were so very small and cute!

From that point onwards everything else was a bonus for the little ones. They enjoyed making their way around the Birds of Prey aviaries, saying hello to the sheep grazing in the field and practicing throwing the hay bale! As we made our way around the centre we chose to follow the Purple Walk. Taking approximately ¾ of an hour, this took us around the many fields of Shire Horses; with one of the particular highlights being watching a young foal chasing up and down the Home Field. Once back in the farmyard we visited the Exhibition Centre, where we learnt all about the Shire Horse and got to measure ourselves against a life size Shire Horse chart.

After lots of exploring we visited the Lakeside café for a much needed pit stop. There was a great choice of sandwiches, hot snacks and cakes, along with a children’s menu, again offering sandwiches and hot snacks, such as beans on toast. The little ones chose cheese sandwiches which they thoroughly enjoyed and, despite our heart-warming piglet encounter, the adults opted for Pork Sausage with Onion Chutney sandwiches – terrible I know! As it was a lovely day we enjoyed our sandwiches on the balcony overlooking the lake; a really lovely spot to enjoy lunch and talk about all the animals we had met that day.

We all very much enjoyed our visit to Cotebrook Shire Horse Centre and will be back next year to meet the next generation of piglets and foals!

Halloween Hurry By Nicola Foster For some reason Halloween always takes me by surprise. Unlike Christmas, I always feel quite relaxed about Halloween until about the 28th October when the children start asking what they will be doing. I then have three days to work out where I put last year’s decorations, find the children something remotely “spooky” to wear and find somewhere that still has multipacks of sweets on BOGOF deals in stock. Last October I was, even after all this time, still in mourning for the loss of my beloved Woolworths, an establishment which has yet to be equalled in its capacity to sell every imaginable product for every type of occasion. So I had to make do with the supermarket. For some reason the children were with me, which was my first mistake. My second was to hiss “YES! JUST PUT IT IN THE TROLLEY” each time 3 very whiney voices bombarded me with “can we have this, can we have this, can we have this?” I read somewhere that last year in the UK we spent an estimated £300 million on Halloween, a remarkable figure as in 2001 we spent only £12 million! Given the amount I paid at the checkout, I can state with reasonable conviction that this increase is totally down to people who take their children shopping with them.

Halloween is one of those events which most children adore but for adults (me) it is just one big faff. By the time I had decorated the house with all the tat we had bought, the aroma of scorched pumpkin was wafting through the kitchen and my Halloween biscuits were declared inedible, I was pretty fed up. The children though, were poised by the door, desperate to greet any ‘trick or treaters’.

The eldest having examined the vast bowl of sweets, was curious about the number of callers I was expecting. The reality is that the numbers do vary – one year it was just 5 and I think one of them came twice, but it is important to be prepared. I remember that as a child, news travelled very fast between groups of callers so if word got out that a particular house had run out of sweets and has no other option but to hand out money, in the blink of an eye there would be queues forming down the drive. After spending all our money at the supermarket I was taking no chances and had enough Haribos to cater for next Halloween too.

The first callers who came were met with screams of excitement from the children who were momentarily distracted from fighting furiously over who would hold the sweet bowl. This did actually have the advantage of discouraging callers from lingering. Inevitably they wanted to go trick or treating themselves so their father took them out leaving me alone with the sweet bowl. Normally this would be a good thing but instead I was up and down answering the door, cutting the rather tragic impression of somebody celebrating Halloween by herself.

Once the children were home, I declared Halloween over for another year and the second phase of Halloween came into play where I pull down all the decorations and turn the lights off at the front, to discourage further callers by giving the impression of us being out. The children thought this was rather mean of me but I told them that Halloween is all about mean spirits and they should think themselves lucky to have me all to themselves!

A Dad’s Eye View On: Conkers By John Freeman The fun begins around late September, when horse chestnut trees jettison their small, green, barbed bombs. And while the outer pod may look fearsome, it contains a gleaming seed to quicken the pulse of any child. Inside is a rich reddish-brown nugget of excitement. A conker. And autumn is the season for the noble sport of conkers.

As a kid I loved playing conkers. It combined a heady blend of nostalgia (misty-eyed grandfathers would tell stories of legendary indestructible seeds), nerve-tingling competition and a rash dash of playground violence.

It would start with finding a perfect conker. Too small and it would do little damage. Too large and it would be rendered impossible-to-miss target practice. Then, it required parental help to bore a neat hole through the centre of the conker (trying this on your mother’s dining table was/is not a good idea) and the threading of a spare shoelace.

The rules were simple. Each player got a turn to whack their conker at their opponent’s. The first conker to smash was the loser, and the winning conker – if both were being used for the very first time – became a ‘oner’. And if the vanquished conker was already, say, a ‘sevener’, the victorious conker became an ‘eighter’, and so on.

So far, so simple. But, conkers was a game of deception and deceit as much as brute strength. Conkers could be ‘modified’ to make them harder. I tried all sorts of ways – baking them for a few minutes (a rubbish method), soaking them in vinegar (unexpectedly successful) or painting them with your mum’s nail varnish (in retrospect, a bit weird). Playing with an adulterated conker was not entirely cheating, but ensured Conker Wars escalated quickly at my school. One lad drilled a hole in a metal ball bearing and somehow managed to insert it into the shell of a conker. That WAS cheating.

And the rules could get a bit hazy. Pre-game agreements on the use of ‘tugsies’ (in which if the shoelaces became entwined the players were allowed to tug the conker out of the other’s hands) and the dark art of ‘stamps’ (where a fallen conker was permitted to be stamped to smithereens and victory claimed) were utterly necessary to avoid the overwhelming despair of losing an ‘old favourite’ by foul means.

Nowadays, a proportion of schools deem the playing of conkers too dangerous. The potential for flying shards of horse chestnut seeds (highly unlikely) and nut allergies (with no credible source to back such a claim), means that too many children never get to experience the simple pleasure of thwacking two giant seeds together and seeing which one will break first. And that makes me just a tiny bit sad.

On the Road By Victoria Pollitt Over the summer Victoria and her family stayed at Holgates Silverdale Caravan Park. During their stay they visited Greenlands Farm Village, Leighton Moss Nature Reserve and South Lakes Safari Zoo. A long black tongue curls around a handful of leaves my son Josh is holding out at arm’s length and his face lights up with excitement. Feeding a giraffe wasn’t something we expected to be doing on our holiday to Silverdale. But from meeting these gentle giants, to bird spotting and watching a Chilean rodent settle in Josh’s hood, our week on the Cumbria/Lancashire border brought us closer to nature.

And nature was certainly close by at our base for the week Holgates Silverdale Caravan Park - an immaculate site overlooking Morecambe Bay. Expectations were high as it won an award for Cumbria’s best holiday park last year - and it didn’t disappoint. Located in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the only sounds from the decking outside our holiday home were birdsong.The static caravan soon felt like a home from home. It was modern with a sea view and included everything we could need. Josh and our one-year-old Jessica loved the outdoor play areas and the woodland walks from directly outside our plot. Facilities include a leisure centre with pool, gym, games room, soft play area, a bar and restaurant.

Many of the holiday homes are privately owned but there are some to rent as well as space for touring caravans and tents. Or if you like camping but crave a bit more comfort, you can even hire a camping pod with lighting, heating, a plug socket and a sofa bed.

There is plenty to do in the surrounding area and we packed as much in as possible. Our animal interaction began at the nearby Greenlands Farm Village where Josh enjoyed feeding lambs, stroking puppies and riding a donkey. He held a rat-like creature called a Degu and was unfazed when it ran up his arm and sat on his neck before getting comfy in his coat hood.

There’s plenty to do here even when it rains as this former dairy farm also has a play barn, go-karts, shops, a cafe and a garden centre.

Next stop was Leighton Moss nature reserve, run by the RSPB, where the enthusiasm of the staff is infectious. Josh took part in their monthly Nature Tots session for young children, which was a great way to start exploring. Then he was lent a fabulous child’s backpack with binoculars, magnifying glass and other useful bits to properly look around this site, where our discoveries included some baby wrens.

Further afield was South Lakes Safari Zoo where you can wander amongst kangaroos, monkeys and emus and get closer than usual to other animals like bears, hippos and wolves. Josh gave food to birds and lemurs and - in case you were wondering how a small child goes about feeding the world’s tallest land animal - stood on a high platform to feed the giraffes.

So our holiday certainly brought us closer to nature, which we expected, and closer to a giraffe’s tongue, which we didn’t.

Local Cinema on Awards Shortlist Again Nantwich Family Films @ 4, a community cinema which each month screens films for all the family, has been chosen as one of the contenders for the ‘Community Award’ at the National Film Society Awards to be announced on 3rd October. This is the second year running that they have been nominated for an award; in 2014 they received a commendation in the ‘Best New Society’ category. The Community Award is for film societies who have had an impact on their local community The project has been running since January 2014, providing affordable cinema to families in the town. Recent screenings include; The Lego Movie, Wreck it Ralph, and Frozen. Family tickets are just £10, and films are screened on the 3rd Sunday of each month at 4pm. Get Your Skates On There’s plenty of roller-skating fun to be had at the MAC mulit-activity centre. The centre is a community interest company committed to providing recreational services to the community and as such they aim to keep prices low and reinvest profits to improve the centre. You’ll find a large purpose built rink suitable for all abilities with marshals on hand to help, they also offer skating lessons, children’s parties, roller hockey and afterschool clubs for the under 11’s. There is also a cafe and community room.
