Editor’s Diary

Welcome to Spring Dear Reader Spring is such a lovely time of year, the days are getting longer and hopefully a bit warmer and there is so much going on to keep us all busy and out and about with our loved ones. There is Mothers Day to celebrate, Easter and not one but two long bank holiday weekends!

This issue there are plenty of features to keep you informed and entertained. Nicola Foster writes about the stresses and pressures of organising a children’s birthday party, which is quite topical at the moment and will hopefully raise a smile or two. John Freeman inspires us with his article about his son learning to ride a bike, and the family bike rides that follow. Adventures of a Guilty Mum and Her Son sees Kate and Henry visit the Manley Mere Adventure Trail and have some fun getting nice and messy! Victoria Pollitt writes about her family holiday to Lanzarote and there are some suggestions for birds to look out for this spring from Daniel Trotman of the RSPB. The Days Out and Events section provides plenty of suggestions for things to see, do and enjoy. There are some new family friendly events to look into, Simply Cheshire, Shakespeare Week at Tatton, the Geronimo Festival for families with young children and much more. As usual our Baby and Toddler Diary is full of places to go and activities to enjoy with your little ones and Sue Steel gives her usual charming recommendations for books to read this spring, plus you’ll find two competitions to win family tickets for some great days out. Spring Reads By Sue Steel

Hello from simply books!

We’ve been busy creating our new website www.simplybooks.info to give you a better feel for Simply Books and what we get up to ...so do have a peep! For me having an independent bookshop is about community; recommending great reads (every book you could possibly want is just a visit, e-mail or phone call away), inviting you to meet authors and illustrators (you can now book tickets online for our headline events) and of course welcoming you into our shop and café.

March is an ideal time to visit the shop as we celebrate World Book Day. Children will have received a £1 World Book Day Token (a gift from us booksellers) so do come in and why not use your voucher towards one of my picks?

My first pick ‘WANTED! Ralfy Rabbit, Book Burglar’ by Emily MacKenzie tells the story of said rabbit who’s wanted on suspicion of stealing books.... he just can’t get enough of them! He’s not interested in carrots and dandelions....no he dreams of books.

This wonderfully funny new story has lively illustrations and the array of rabbits is particularly cute. It’s fairly long with quite a lot of text so perfect for 5/6yr olds upwards.

By contrast, Nick Sharratt’s latest book ‘Fancy Dress Jungle’ is a lift the flap interactive story. All the jungle animals are wearing fancy dress but who’s hiding under each crazy costume? With his distinctive brightly coloured illustrations and sturdy die cut pages little children will enjoy guessing who’s who.

With Spring in the air and thoughts turning to getting out and about, ‘Wild Adventures’ by Mick Manning and Brita Granstrom is packed full of ideas for all kinds of exciting outdoor activities. It’s a stunning book with beautiful water colour illustrations and easy to follow instructions. In contrast to a world of gadgets it’s a good reminder of how much fun it is to explore nature. Another one for the family bookshelf!

And finally, my pick for mums is Nora Webster by Colm Toibin – an Irish love story. Nora Webster is recently widowed. As she struggles to come to terms with her loss and the needs of her children, she has to try and find a way to start living again. Simply written, utterly gripping and not a word wasted. This seemingly bleak storyline unfolds with such tenderness that you’ll find this is a novel that stays with you long after you’ve put it down.

The Ups and Downs of Parenting

A Party Palaver By Nicola Foster Recently it has been difficult to avoid reading about the the bête noire that has become a child’s birthday party; parents invoicing other parents for their child’s non attendance and a celebrity tweeting her disapproval about being asked to give money for a present.There are many aspects of parenthood that are designed to push a parent to the edge of reason but I am firmly of the opinion that there is nothing quite like hosting a birthday party to push usually rational people through that final frontier into a temporary abyss of madness.

When push comes to shove, all most children actually want from a birthday party is crisps, lashings of cake and space to run round like sugar fuelled loons. Whilst this sounds quite simple, it is anything but simple. Long gone are the birthday parties of my childhood where I would invite a few friends round to my house. We played games, ate our body weight in Party Ring biscuits and goody bags would consist of a slice of home-made birthday cake.

Fast forward to the parties of today and I have noticed an invitation to a party in somebody’s home is quite a rare thing. From my own rather general assessment of the whole party fandango, it would seem a multi-million pound industry has been built around the profound reluctance of the modern parent (including myself) to have 30 children rampaging through their house for two hours.

The options and types of party available are, quite frankly, bewildering. Once a Party Parent and child have agreed on a venue and party theme, the next hurdle is whom to invite. In the early years of school, this tends to be the entire class which, whilst more costly, is a strategically safe move. After a year or two, the parties tend to get a little smaller and this is where it gets tricky - I found doing the seating plan at my wedding easier than trying to navigate my way through the quagmire of who to invite and who not to invite to some of my childrens’ parties. Once the invitations have been sent out, the Party Parent enters the next and perhaps most frustrating phase of the process and one over which they have no control - waiting for replies to the invitations. This stage can last right up to the time of the party and hinges on the ability of a small child to remember to take their invitation home and their parent to respond, which can be a bigger challenge than it sounds. Last minute acceptances play havoc with the goody bags and the catering.

Some parents take it upon themselves to carry out reconnaissance missions into their child’s book bag or drawer to retrieve all manner of scrunched up paperwork and invitations that may need dealing with and, whilst commendable, is by no means a guarantee of attendance (see below).

The playground can be a treacherous place and most parents are anxious to avoid getting a bad name by not responding to invitations or, in my case and to my eternal shame, promptly accepting invitations and then failing to turn up due an administrative apocalypse (twice) and a monumental hangover (once). This is a crime on a par with the parent who never replies to an invitation, but always turns up on the day or the mother that turns up with her other children and asks if she can leave them at the party, because she needs to pop to Tesco.

Short of introducing legislation banning parties altogether which, whilst appealing, is rather draconian, I have been unable to think of a satisfactory solution to the whole party palaver. I can’t help thinking the degree of madness experienced by modern Party Parents is intrinsically linked to the amount of money they are having to shell out to pay for the party. The average cost of a party is now £250 - “a dear do” as my Grandma was very fond of saying. Equally, however, I am not convinced that reverting to a retro type party at home, complete with home made entertainment and cake, would work either. Whilst a more economical option, there is no escaping the fact there will be a house full of marauding children and, as the weather in this country is notoriously uncooperative, the chances of being able to throw everyone into the garden are very slim. Pffft - even just thinking about it is driving me mad….

A Dad’s Eye View On: Family Bike Rides By John Freeman Last summer, something magical happened. My nine-year-old son rode a bicycle for about 50 yards without stabilizers. It was a remarkable and wonderful moment because my son has hemiplegia, meaning he has weakness down one side of his body making balancing on a bike very difficult.

When he was younger, my son would happily ride his bike with stabilizers, but as the years passed and his friends began to ride unaided, his time spent in the saddle became less and less as he became more self-conscious. It was heart-breaking to see this tenacious and determined little boy try and fail to pedal more than a few yards. I did the whole ‘running alongside as he started before letting go’ Dad thing, only to see him push down on the pedals, wobble violently and fall off.

So, as a family, we quietly retreated from riding bikes to the extent that our seven-year-old daughter hadn’t learned to ride properly either. We watched as other families went out on long bike rides in the spring sunshine and silently accepted that cycling ‘wouldn’t be our thing’.

And then the magic happened. One day, a couple of my son’s friends came to play at our house. They arrived on their bikes and proceeded to bomb up and down the street, while our son tried to keep up on his micro-scooter. My wife and I were inside the house when we suddenly heard a commotion and a good deal of cheering. Our son appeared at the front door.

“I’ve just learnt to ride a bike,” he shouted with a huge grin.

We could barely believe what we were hearing and dashed out of the house to witness something we’d previously thought impossible. It turned out that, in an act of kindness not usually associated with nine-year-old boys, one of my son’s friends had lent him his bike and taught him to ride. In about five minutes. It appeared that after not attempting to cycle for over two years, my son was now strong enough to confidently propel himself through the first difficult, wobbly yards.

It was an unforgettable moment. My wife and I watched as my son gleefully rode up and down the road. After we’d managed to prise him off his friend’s bike, I immediately took him to a local cycle shop and bought him his very own BMX. But, things got even better. The next day, spurred on by her brother, my daughter mastered cycling without stabilizers. We were a complete family of cyclists - and as the days lengthen and spring takes hold, we can now enjoy bike rides in a way that had never seemed possible in previous years.

On the Road By Victoria Pollitt Lanzarote. One day we are up among its staggering volcanoes, the next exploring deep beneath the ocean in a yellow submarine. And it’s on a high that the holiday starts with a remarkably relaxing flight with Jet2. I’d feared the worst as our daughter Jessica is just nine months old.

Thanks to the airline’s hand-luggage allowance (10kg per person, double that of our last flight with a different company) we were well-equipped with entertainment for Jessica and four year old Josh. Fortunately, the four-hour journey passed without a hitch. Basking in the glow of compliments from other passengers on the childrens’ behaviour, we left the plane, expecting to further bask in the ‘guaranteed’ winter sun of the Canary Islands. Unfortunately it stayed firmly hidden behind clouds for the duration of our stay.

Still, we had a bright welcome from the wonderful staff at the ClubHotel Riu. It’s in a great location on the outskirts of Puerto del Carmen, sandwiched between the sea and a glorious volcanic vista.The 600-room, spotless complex, is set in beautiful grounds and we had a fabulous suite away from the reception and restaurants. We were glad of the longer walk back to the room (and Jessica’s pushchair) after thoroughly tucking in to the sumptuous food on offer. The hotel is all inclusive with a large, main restaurant and two other options for dinner - an Asian and a world food restaurant which was our favourite.

Thankfully, most of the hotel’s six swimming pools are heated and Josh particularly enjoyed ordering drinks at the swim-up bar.

Children are well catered for with a playground and the RiuLand club. The entertainers work hard to ensure they have fun during the day and at the evening’s ‘Mini Disco’ where the hilarious Martin kept the adults as entertained as the children.

We wrapped up well to enjoy the expansive Playa de los Pocillos beach, which is just across the road. It was too cold to swim in the sea, but Josh and I went one better and dived 100 feet down in a tourist submarine from the pretty marina at Puerto Calero with Submarine Safaris. Tour guides talk you through the hour-long trip and Octonauts fan Josh was thrilled to spot a diver, shipwrecks and a stingray.

There were more creatures to see back on dry land at Rancho Texas Lanzarote Park. They have sea lion, eagle and parrot shows plus ponies, canoe rides and a water park with slides. We couldn’t leave without exploring its volcanic history so we hired a car and drove to Timanfaya National Park. The black rocky landscape makes it hard to believe the last eruptions here were in 1824. Staff demonstrated how hot the earth was by setting dry bush alight, cooking food and creating great gushes of steam out of the ground.

Visitors also take a coach trip around the volcanoes - ours ended with a round of applause. Whether our fellow passengers were moved by the sights or just grateful to be back in one piece after navigating the narrow, winding mountain roads and sheer drops, I wasn’t sure.

It was us that deserved a round of applause for the return flight as Jessica was not as keen this time to sit quietly in my lap! And the compliments were from us alone - for a fantastic family holiday.

Thank you Lanzarote - for the volcanic highs, the oceanic lows and everything in between.

Alongside supporting local businesses and people, they will also be supporting “The Joshua Tree”, the Cheshire based charity which aims to build a respite holiday home in Cheshire for children with life limiting illnesses.

Local school girl pen pals link Cheshire and Mombasa Cheshire school girl Lauren Higginson is helping to bring English lessons to life for school children in Mombasa, who in turn are helping Lauren and her school friends to understand how lucky they are. Seven year old Lauren enjoys drawing pictures and writing simple English text for Ann-Glory and her classmates, who attend Destiny Garden School which is located in one of the poorest parts of Kenya.

Lauren’s parents have sponsored Ann-Glory, who is the same age as Lauren, for just a year and it immediately had an impact on Lauren’s awareness of how different life can be in other areas of the world. Lauren says: “I was shocked to hear that Ann-Glory only has fresh fruit as a treat for special occasions when I can have it every day as a snack”.

Lauren’s Mum, Viki, said: “Writing to Ann-Glory and receiving her replies has really helped Lauren to understand just how lucky she is, and she appreciates her toys and books much more now she knows that Ann-Glory and her classmates have to share textbooks – though they’ve discovered that they both love running!”

Ann-Glory’s education is paid for through the sponsorship scheme run by Destiny Children – a small charity which sends 100% of donors’ funds, including Gift Aid, directly to Destiny Garden School, providing children like Ann-Glory with the good education they might not otherwise be able to receive. Destiny Children was founded in 2009 by Macclesfield couple Pat and Judy Roper to help support the Destiny Garden School, the school is funded almost entirely by the charity.

Days Out and Events

New Festival for Children this spring at Tatton Geronimo is a brand new festival for 2015 and this long weekend of organised mayhem will be at Tatton Park between 23rd - 25th May. The Festival is set to deliver an exciting programme of acts, experiences and adventures, resulting in a fantastic family day out especially for those with children and little ones under 12.

Festival Director Simon Goldman said: “As a father of seven, I know how hard it is to find quality days out that cater for the whole family. With Geronimo, we’ve created a festival that’s going to keep the kids entertained all day long, and create memories that will last a lot longer. With 100s of things to see and do, it will offer families a rewarding experience through a combination of imagination, creativity and adventure, alongside exciting live performances from some of the best-loved names in children’s entertainment”.

Making the most of the beautiful woodland backdrops at Tatton Park, the Adrenaline Zone will challenge even the bravest adventurers with tree climbing, den making and a thrilling zip line. For those who like things a little less fast paced there will be lots of storytelling and the chance to picnic with characters from Alice in Wonderland.

There will be lots to see on stage, including Cbeebies favourite Mr. Bloom and CBeebies ‘I Can Cook’ presenter, Katy Ashworth.

Children can find plenty of craft workshops in the Funky Junk Zone. In the Circus Zone there will be aerial trapeze artists, Punch & Judy, clowns and a circus skills workshop. The Groovy Zone offers activities including Zumba workshops, dressing up areas, dance classes with Baby Ballet and Geronimo’s own disco! All this along with a pop-up petting farm, giant sandpit, camel rides, marvelous bubble shows and a bouncy inflatable village means there is so much to keep the whole family entertained.

The Lost Carnival returns this May Over a century after the mysterious Lost Carnival was last heard of, it will in May reappear for a few short nights in the North of England. The Lost Carnival is an immersive theatre experience that invites families to step into a world unlike any other.

The content of the carnival will remain shrouded in mystery until the audience step inside the big top, but families can expect spell-binding theatre, circus, music and visual trickery. All that has been revealed so far is that an incredible carnival, the most enchanting carnival in the world, suddenly stopped touring in its heyday, under suspicious and mysterious circumstances. The carnival is coming back, but can the families of the North help it to ward off past dangers and bring it back to its former glory?

The story behind the Lost Carnival will unfold in the months leading up to the event, in the form of a fictional radio documentary podcast produced by sleuth Arthur Bird. Families can follow the story at www.thelostcarnival.org.uk and use the podcast, archive and clues to try to solve the mysteries of the carnival themselves, before the story culminates at the live event.

The Lost Carnival will appear in Burrs Country Park in Bury on the evenings of 22nd, 23rd, 24th and 25th May 2015.The carnival will be open from 4 - 9pm, with the audience entering on timed tickets. Tickets cost £10 per person (under 3s go free). Carnival goers should dress for the weather, and wear sturdy shoes.

Rowan Hoban, Wild Rumpus director said “we’ve heard whispers for many years of a Lost Carnival, and have often hoped that it might reappear in our lifetime. News that it will be in Bury in May 2015 is just wonderful. The Carnival may be in danger though, so we’re asking the families of the North to keep their ears to the ground. Time is of the Essence.”

Spring has sprung (well almost!) and if you’ve been hibernating like us for the past few months, it is time to shake off winter and get out into the sunshine. There is no better place to do this than at Manley Mere. Here you will find a beautiful lake, watersports facilities and a lovely bar and restaurant; but most importantly for us, we found the Adventure Trail.

First things first, you will need £2.00 for parking. Be warned, you will need it to open the barrier; so if like myself and the Queen you never carry cash, make sure you take some with you. You will then drive into the car park with beautiful views over the water. There is a nice walk around the lake, along with a small play area near the car park; but if you want to get straight on with the adventure, then head to the shop or the restaurant (depending on time of year) to buy your tickets. Tickets are £9.00 per person, with under 5s and over 70s free.

The tickets allow all day access. So if you wanted to do the trail, come out for something to eat and then go and do the trail again you absolutely can. Although we had brought our own picnic, the Chameleon restaurant looked to be well used and had a wide ranging and tasty sounding menu. You can eat inside or on the terrace, where you can watching the passing boats and watersports on the lake.

When you pay for your ticket you are given advice on the trail and the best routes to explore. We were told it would take approximately 2 hours, but with a dawdling 4 year old, and an over excited 40 something year old, it took us about 2 ½ hrs. Having said that we didn’t go on all of the equipment, either because it was a little too big for Henry, or because the weather wasn’t quite warm enough to be dunked in the river! The great thing about the trail is that you can pick and choose what you go on. If something looks too hard (or too wet!) then you can just walk past it; or do as we did and get Daddy to try it first!

Although Henry didn’t go on all of the equipment, this didn’t stop him having a fantastic time. Unlike when we’ve been for walks before, he never once complained of being tired and this was because there was plenty to keep his attention. He loved to run around to see what the next part of the adventure would be, and thought it was brilliant that he could get really mucky! When we got to the end, he also liked using the hosepipes to blast the muck off! Tip – when the weather has been particularly British, wear old clothes and take clean clothes which you can change into at the changing rooms on the way out.

We finished the day with a picnic overlooking the lake; a welcome rest compared to the excitement of our earlier adventuring!

Mum of three Esther, worked for 15 years as the finance director of a Manchester printing company. Whilst expecting her second child, Esther discovered a new love of baking and cooking. But it was to be another five years of testing recipes on friends and family before she was to take the leap and turn her newfound hobby into a commercial venture.

“I had always been involved in business and knew that I would love to start something of my own but it was important to me that it was something I could do alongside raising a family. I thought about what I would have appreciated as a busy, working parent and Little Darlings Party Teas grew from there,” she explained.

“As a mum I understand how stressful it is just trying to keep all the plates spinning.

When a party or event is thrown in on top it often means paying for an overpriced venue serving mediocre, processed food, or a mad rush to the supermarket for frozen sausage rolls, crisps and mass-produced cakes. I wanted to provide a third option, that gave parents the opportunity to serve their kids and their friends tasty, homemade food that is made with care,” said Esther.

Little Darlings Party Tea boxes are competitively priced, starting at £3.50 for a ‘keep it simple’ option which contains a cheese or ham sandwich, sausage roll, smartie cookie, fairy bun, cherry tomatoes, grapes and a drink. Some tips on which birds to lookout for this spring Daniel Trotman from RSPB at Burton Mere Wetlands has given us a few guidelines to help us recognise some of the birds that frequent our gardens, parks and countryside.

“Garden birds are often amongst the first wildlife a child learns to recognise, understandably so when many people are lucky enough to see them without leaving the comfort of their home. Even urban gardens may be visited by the likes of starlings, blackbirds and house sparrows, who as their name suggests actually rely on our homes to make theirs!

Watching birds at home is a popular and simple pastime, and many people are surprised at the variety of birds that visit their garden, once they start properly looking. With the help of a single seed feeder, a range of Tits and Finches can usually be attracted. Offering multiple types of food, such as adding peanuts, could be rewarded with less common sights like Great-spotted Woodpeckers. Family time spent birdwatching is not only fun but also a great introduction to the riches of British wildlife. For some, it will be the beginning of a strong connection to nature, something that is essential to ensure wildlife has the support it needs to thrive now and into the future.

There’s fun to be had creating home-made feeders using suet or lard, with recipes widely available.

The number and variety of birds your garden can support depends on your home’s surroundings, time of year and the amount of greenery, but families looking to find more need look no further than RSPB Burton Mere Wetlands nature reserve in North West Cheshire.

Teeming with the familiar garden faces in their natural habitats, along with their wilder cousins like Reed Buntings and Siskins, even a brief visit opens the door to seeing how the RSPB is working to give nature a home. Of course, there are also all kinds of ducks, geese and wading birds to find once you start exploring the nature trails, and some great family activities and events to get involved with”.

To be or not to be… …at Tatton Park during Shakespeare Week (16 – 22 March) is a question to which the answer should be yes!

Tatton has chosen to join over 6,000 schools and organisations in celebrating the world of one of the all time greatest writers. Shakespeare Week is a national annual celebration that introduces primary aged children to Shakespeare’s life, works and times in a fun and engaging way.

The programme includes a charming abridged version of Twelfth Night by Overchurch Primary School. The Tudor Old Hall is the perfect setting for this and you can expect strong ensemble performances, crazy musical sequences and laugh out loud moments. Fun for all ages!

Kids can get hands on with two very different activities. LIPA4:19, Knutsford (Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts) take the spectacle in to the gardens in a Midsummer Drama Trail and they’ll be led through Tatton’s gardens following in the footsteps of Puck seeing this enchanting tale brought to life right in front of their eyes.The music of Shakespeare played a critical role in his work and local historical music expert Tom Hughes will dress in costume and play music from the Elizabethan and Tudor times with instruments from the period. Participants will have the opportunity to learn a traditional gig and ‘have a go’!

Families will be able to step in to the world Shakespeare lived in during an atmospheric The World of William Shakespeare event, a wonderful living history interpretation of this era from what was worn, to how people communicated, what was consumed to how they entertained each other.

Into the Woods takes Shakespeare out into Tatton’s beautiful parkland and explores how the works of Shakespeare fit in to our natural world, with hands on activities and recitals. To end the week you can prepare for battle at the Old Hall and have a go at learning the art of the longbow notable for the outcome of the Battle of Agincourt depicted in Shakespeare’s Henry V.
