Cross-Curricular Literacy activities
The cross-curricular opportunities for literacy teaching and learning which uses ICT are many and varied and the limit to what is feasible will be determined largely by the access to the software, hardware and the internet which the children have.
The following activity ideas are derived from Kent (2009):

Media Arts: Creating news images
Lesson Description
Students are to browse a newspaper or an online news service. They are to choose an article that does not have a picture associated with it.
After this, students are to create an image that relates to an aspect of the article. In constructing the image, students should consider using clip art, digital photographs and appropriate images found on the Internet.
Problem Statement Write your own problem statement to present to students remembering key use of ICT terminology and features.
Achievement Standards (English)
• Understand how language features, images and vocabulary choices are used for different effects and; • Understand how language features and images are used to link and sequence ideas.
Hardware Requirements
• Computer; • Internet access; • Digital camera; • IWB (optional).
Software Requirements
• MS Paint; • Paint.net; • Google Picasa; • PowerPoint; • Internet browser.

Internet Activity
1. Students are to browse the newspaper or online news service webpage and choose an article that does not have a picture associated with it. Alternatively, the teacher may wish to choose them for the students and have them listed.
Graphics Activity
1. Students are to open either MS Paint or Paint.net. 2. Students to construct an image that relates to an aspect of the article.

Students are to take a range of digital photos and/or short video clips while on an excursion or field trip. Once back at school, students will combine the images and videos to make a short newsreel clip on a topic relating to an aspect of the excursion. They can also add a voice narration to the newsreel.

1. Students to make a digital recording of themselves reading a passage of text of an appropriate reading level. 2. Students are then to edit their recordings using audio-editing software such as Audacity removing any ums, ahs or long pauses so that they produce fluent piece of reading.
Extension
Repeat the above the activity in the context of reading a foreign language. In this case they can delete any words that are not pronounced correctly and insert a recording of the word pronounced correctly.
