Vocabulary Pictures

Lesson Description
The students are to take photos that represent vocabulary terms they are currently studying. Create a vocabulary list for the appropriate year level which contain terms from outside the classroom. Students will collect images by “reading” their community in an attempt to find “visual definitions” of required vocabulary terms.
You can choose to post the images to a class “word wall” which will challenge the students to develop a shared visual library.
Objectives: Students will be to define vocabulary terms.

Materials Needed:
Class vocabulary list; Digital images; Digital camera perhaps using an iPad or standalone device; Printing materials; A tool for organising images such as Flikr (www.flickr.com); Photo editing software such as Adobe Photoshop or iPhoto.
Extension
Challenge students to record literacy events experienced outside the classroom. Have an extension discussion in the class that will help students to explore how images can capture oral texts and bring meaning into being.

Visual Literacy Narratives
Lesson Description
Students are to write about their own experiences as readers and writers. They are required to construct a digital story, using MS PowerPoint, iMovie or Adobe Premiere to communicate their experiences.
They use a variety of still images, moving images and scanned images which they must arrange in a timeline.
Objectives
Students will use images to communicate intended meaning; Students will use their understanding of their experiences and work as readers to have richer, more successful interactions with print text.
