YOU’VE BEEN LIED TO
Author Richard Mulholland
YOU’VE BEEN LIED TO ABOUT
GIFTS
In my first book, Legacide (the sequel of which comes out next month), I discussed gifts, specifically corporate gifts.
After the tragic and sudden death of John Ruhlin, the author of Giftology, I thought I'd revisit the idea.
Here's the truth:
If it has your logo on it; it's an advert for you, not a gift for them.
If that wasn't the case, why don't we also brand gifts to friends and loved ones?
"Hey Jeff, happy birthday dude, here's your gift..."
Unwraps gift. Pauses...
"Wow, dude, a Grimsmo Norseman knife, that's incredible!"
He turns it over to look at it.
"Umm, it's got your name engraved on it?"
"Yeah, man. You're welcome!"
It's so ridiculously absurd, and yet here we are.
I once did a talk for a financial services client who knew that I rode motorbikes. To say thanks, they got me a biker-style jacket with their logo embroidered on the back (y'know, like Jax Teller's financial advisor).
They had it made just for me; they even called my wife to get the size right.
The gesture was incredible, and I was thankful for it, but I never wore it. What's sad is that it was a nice jacket. Had they given me the jacket with a branded card, I'd have thought of them whenever I did.
Let me give you a fitting counter-example. I was having brunch with Robbie Brozin, the co-founder of Nando's (the dude is a living legend). He was wearing a rad summer jacket that I complimented him on. He explained that it was part of the new Nando's casual-corporate wear and that he just got it. I commented that it was unbranded (there was just the Galo de Barcelos emblem on the sleeve). He explained why that was, said there was a tiny bit of branding, and showed me a small tag on the inside lining.
We finished our meal and walked out to the car park together. I could see he was appraising me, then started taking his jacket off. He asked me to try it on; it fit perfectly. "It's yours!" he said. I was dumbfounded.
I wear it all the time, and whenever I do, I tell people how I got it - because it's such a great story! The founder of Nando's didn't just give me an unbranded Nando's team-only jacket. I was given the founder of Nando's very own jacket!
No logo, but a HEAP of positive branding! Even though branding was the furthest thing from his mind when he gave it - he's just that nice a guy.
So, am I saying that branded products don't have their place? Not at all. We all love good, high-quality SWAG—but it's just not the gift that you think it is.
Oh, and before I go, I have another unrelated thought on gifting. Imagine it's your birthday, and someone gives you a book and tells you they thought you'd love it. Do you say, "Thanks, but I've read it already?"
or do you say, "Thanks, I'm so excited to read it!" and then exchange it later without them knowing? I'm guessing (hoping) that you would do the latter. You're recognising the gesture.
So why do we do that when people send us memes? Sometimes I send something fun to someone and they reply, "Yeah I saw that yesterday."
What a pointless response. When someone sends me something, I take it as "I saw this, thought of you, and thought you'd enjoy it." The only response is "Thanks" or another suitable response or emoji. Let them have it; it doesn't harm you.
This tidbit is my gift to you...!

Good for You, Good for the Planet
ould there be even a difference in choosing an “Organic” lifestyle? In many ways, yes!
To go organic doesn’t just help our planet but your health as well! Going Organic encourages individuals to make choices that promote personal health and well-being and contribute to a more sustainable and ecologically balanced planet. It emphasises the interconnectedness of human health and the health of the environment.
A Go Organic Lifestyle
To go organic refers to a lifestyle choice where individuals opt for products and practices that adhere to the principles of
organic agriculture. It’s a commitment to supporting agricultural practices prioritising natural and sustainable methods, aiming to promote environmental health, preserve biodiversity, and reduce the reliance on potentially harmful synthetic inputs.
How Products Are Grown and Processed
Organic products are distinguished by how they are grown and processed. This includes the avoidance of synthetic chemicals like human-made pesticides and fertilisers. Organic farmers often employ crop rotation and companion planting techniques to manage pests and diseases naturally. These practices help maintain soil health and biodiversity.
Types of Organic Products
While organic food items are the most well-known, the concept to go organic extends beyond the realm of food. Clothing and personal care items can also be made using materials produced through organic agriculture. When looking for organic products, it’s important to look for certifications from reputable organic certifying bodies to ensure that the products meet organic standards.
Materials from Organic Agriculture
Organic products are made from materials that come from organic agriculture.
This means the raw ingredients used in these products were sourced from farms or processes that adhere to organic farming practices.
Supports Sustainable Agriculture
Organic farming aims to minimise negative impacts on the environment. This includes practices like water conservation, reduced pollution, and promoting natural pest control methods. This helps maintain the long-term viability of farmland and promotes sustainable agricultural practices.
Supports Local and Small-Scale Farmers
Organic farming often aligns with smaller, local, and family-owned farms. By buying from local and small-scale organic farmers, consumers who go organic play a vital role in promoting a more sustainable, resilient, and community-centred food system.
The
exclusion of synthetic chemicals and GMOs
Organic agriculture prohibits using synthetic chemicals such as human-made pesticides and fertilisers. Additionally, it ensures that the products do not contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs).
Higher Nutritional Values
Some studies suggest that organic fruits and vegetables have higher levels of certain nutrients and antioxidants than conventionally grown ones. This could be due to organic agriculture’s healthier soil and farming practices.
By choosing to go organic, individuals can support a farming system that prioritises environmental sustainability, avoids the use of harmful chemicals, and promotes overall well-being.
With The Organic Shop , just one click away, you can explore the essential organic products that will start you off on your sustainable journey!
And be sure to share your adventure with us as you GO ORGANIC!

FROM HUMBLE
TO A FORCE FOR CHANGE BEGINNINGS
Kevin Chaplin’s journey from humble beginnings to renowned social entrepreneur is a testament to the power of determination and innovation. Recognising that personal change is the catalyst for societal transformation, Chaplin embarked on a remarkable career that spanned banking, philanthropy, and social activism.
With over two decades of experience in the banking industry, Chaplin honed his leadership, strategic thinking, and problem-solving skills. These experiences laid the foundation for his bold decision to establish the South African Ubuntu Foundation in 2004, a pioneering initiative dedicated to promoting social cohesion.
Chaplin’s ability to think laterally and identify growth opportunities has been instrumental in his success. He views challenges as stepping stones to innovation, constantly seeking creative solutions to address complex problems.
In addition to his role as the MD of the Amy Foundation, Chaplin serves on the boards of several prominent organisations, including the National Business Initiative, the European Association of Children and Youth, and the
Princess of Africa Foundation. His expertise and leadership have been invaluable to these organisations.
A sought-after public speaker, Chaplin inspires audiences with his passion for social justice and his commitment to making a positive impact. His engaging presentations and insightful perspectives have earned him recognition as a thought leader in the fields of business, philanthropy and social entrepreneurship.
HOW DID YOU GET TO WHERE YOU ARE NOW?
Growing up in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, I experienced a complex childhood shaped by my parents’ relationship. While my mother was incredibly loving, my father’s indifference and cruelty created a challenging environment. However, my mother’s wisdom and the support of my extended family, including strong male role models, helped me navigate these difficulties.
My early career in banking was marked by hard work and dedication. Despite financial constraints, I pursued education and earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree. I quickly
rose through the ranks, becoming one of the youngest managers appointed in the bank, at the time. I progressed to become HR, Finance and Admin Director in Johannesburg; however, at one point, I had to oversee a significant retrenchment process of over 1,000 people, which led me to reassess my career path and ultimately relocate to Cape Town as a Sales and Service Director.
I discovered a vibrant and diverse community in Cape Town that inspired me to pursue my entrepreneurial dreams. I founded the South African Ubuntu Foundation, a non-profit organisation dedicated to positively impacting society. While the foundation has faced challenges, the experience has taught me valuable lessons about resilience, adaptability, the importance of pursuing your passions and the inner reward of making a difference and being able to change lives.
Today, I continue to embrace a spirit of entrepreneurship and innovation. My journey has been filled with triumphs and setbacks, but I have learned to view challenges as opportunities for growth and development. I am grateful for the experiences that have shaped me into who I am today, and I am excited about the future possibilities.
HOW DID YOU GET TO RUNNING THE SA UBUNTU FOUNDATION?
My decision to establish the SA Ubuntu Foundation (often called the Ubuntu Foundation) was deeply influenced by my personal experiences and observations of South African society. As a professional working in the corporate world, I frequently attended events and gatherings that were predominantly white. This lack of diversity sparked a desire to create a more inclusive and equitable environment.
Inspired by my experiences, I began to organise events that brought together people from different backgrounds.
I invited my colleagues and clients to join me in exploring townships and experiencing firsthand the vibrant cultures and communities beyond our usual social circles.
Through these initiatives, I witnessed firsthand the power of human connection and the transformative impact of bringing people together. I realised that a platform that could foster unity, understanding, and collaboration among people from diverse backgrounds was needed. Driven by this passion, I founded the SA Ubuntu Foundation, an organisation dedicated to breaking down barriers and promoting social cohesion. The foundation’s mission is to create a more inclusive and equitable society where people from all walks of life can thrive. My journey to establish the Ubuntu Foundation was challenging. I faced resistance from those resistant to change and clung to outdated stereotypes. However,
I remained steadfast in believing that a more inclusive and harmonious society was possible. With so many black, white, coloured, Indian, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu and Christian friends who had all accepted me, I realised I could play a significant role in bringing business people of different backgrounds together and get them to embrace one another, in other words truly, I could be a catalyst. This is still much needed in our country and all over the world.
Through perseverance and determination, I built a strong network of supporters and partners who shared my vision. Together, we have worked to create a platform that fosters dialogue, understanding, and collaboration.
The Ubuntu Foundation has achieved significant success in promoting social cohesion and empowerment. We have positively impacted countless individuals and communities by organising events, providing
educational opportunities, and supporting community initiatives.
This has been a deeply rewarding adventure. It has allowed me to use my skills and experience to make a difference in the world and to contribute to a more just and equitable society.
AND THE AMY FOUNDATION?
My involvement with the Amy Foundation began in 2006, shortly after I established the SA Ubuntu Foundation. At the time, the Amy Foundation was facing financial difficulties due to the passing of Amy Biehl’s father and the subsequent unavoidable closure of the organisation.
Recognising the valuable work that the Amy Biehl Foundation (subsequently Amy Foundation) was doing to support youth, I decided to take it over and run both the Ubuntu Foundation and Amy Foundation. Amy’s mother wanted me to put the Amy Biehl Foundation under the SA Ubuntu Foundation. As they both had different missions, goals, and objectives, I felt strongly that would not be right; hence, I decided to run them both separately and make the Amy Foundation the beneficiary of the SA Ubuntu Foundation. This decision to take over the Amy Biehl Foundation was motivated by a shared commitment to empowering young people and positively impacting their lives.
By running both the Amy Foundation and the Ubuntu Foundation, we have built Amy Foundation into a stronger and more impactful entity. The Amy Foundation’s focus on youth development aligned perfectly with the Ubuntu Foundation’s mission to promote social cohesion and empowerment.
Since taking over the Amy Foundation, we have provided essential programs and services to needy young people. These programs include education, mentorship, and community development initiatives. By supporting the Amy Foundation, we are investing in the future of South Africa,
helping to address many of the challenges in our country and also creating a more equitable and inclusive society.
HOW ARE THE UBUNTU FOUNDATION AND AMY FOUNDATION STRUCTURED? HOW EXACTLY DOES IT WORK?
I run both as separate organisations but the activities of SA Ubuntu Foundation supports Amy Foundation. Both organisations each have a strong board and external auditors as corporate governance is important to me. Amy Foundation having grown also has a strong audit, risk and governance committee, a strong management team and a dedicated and committed team of staff including co-ordinators and facilitators of classes at our 7 centres.
Numerous obstacles and setbacks marked the journey to establish the Ubuntu Foundation and also take over and run the Amy Foundation. Despite facing financial constraints and limited resources, I remained committed to our mission of empowering youth and promoting social cohesion. The SA Ubuntu Foundation model has worked well as corporations and businesses partner with us for the events we run, and they receive great marketing and brand exposure for their investments. With our expansion and growth into Ubuntu Membership and Think Tank Dinners for CEOs, Chairpersons and Directors to brainstorm and be part of the solutions to the country’s challenges, we have had lots more expenses, so we are looking for more business partners to come on board.
One of the significant challenges we encountered in the Amy Foundation was securing funding. The foundation’s initial funding was depleted, and finding new sources of support proved difficult. However, through perseverance and strategic planning, we secured government grants and donations from individuals and corporations.
Another obstacle we faced was finding a suitable location for our Headquarters. After being given notice from our previous premises, we had to search for a new space that would meet our needs and be affordable. Through sheer determination and resourcefulness, we were able to find a government-owned building as temporary premises until we could build our own offices. By this time, I had a desire to start a youth skills programme for 18 – 35-year-olds, especially with such high unemployment in this age group. We found an old, dilapidated building we bought that we could renovate and use not only as our headquarters but also as a youth skills centre with 7 classrooms, a fully fitted teaching kitchen, a bistro and student accommodation.
Despite these challenges, the Ubuntu Foundation and Amy Foundation have achieved significant success. Amy Foundation has provided thousands of young people with educational, job and entrepreneurship opportunities, mentorship, and community development programmes. Our programmes have helped to reduce school dropout rates, increase employment opportunities, and foster a sense of belonging among marginalised communities.
Looking back on our journey, I am grateful for the resilience, determination, and support that have enabled us to overcome obstacles and achieve our goals. We are a shining example that nothing is impossible. One can achieve anything one puts their mind to. The Ubuntu Foundation and Amy Foundation are a testament to the power of community, collaboration, and a shared commitment to positively impacting the world.
TELL ME ABOUT THE STUDENTS AND WHAT YOU OFFER THEM.
We primarily focus on 5 disciplines: hospitality, sewing and design, beauty and wellness, technical and handyman,
and entrepreneurship. These areas offer a strong foundation for various career paths and allow us to provide comprehensive training and support. While we have concentrated on these five core disciplines, we recognise the importance of equipping our students with broader skills. That’s why we incorporate retail readiness, financial literacy, conversational English, business ethics and etiquette, finance and computer skills into our curriculum. This holistic approach ensures our graduates are well-prepared for a variety of job opportunities, which we set up with our partners. Although we haven’t been able to expand into additional disciplines due to resource constraints, I have ideas for future growth in this area. We could explore options like technology, marketing, or human resources. Ultimately, we aim to give our students the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in a competitive job market and achieve their career aspirations.
Believe in Yourself and Surround Yourself with Positivity
WHAT WOULD YOU TELL YOUR YOUNGER SELF IF YOU COULD STEP BACK IN TIME?
If I could go back in time, I would tell my younger self to believe in myself and the power of a positive mindset.
Throughout my life, I’ve learned that anything is possible with perseverance, hard work, and the right support. Surrounding yourself with positive and supportive people who believe in you is essential. Negative influences can drain your energy and hinder your progress. Focus on building strong relationships with people who uplift and inspire you.
Remember, setbacks and challenges are a natural part of life. Don’t let them discourage you. Stay optimistic and maintain a growth mindset. Believe in your ability to overcome obstacles and achieve your goals.
Finally, take action and don’t wait for opportunities to come to you. Be proactive, seek out new experiences, and seize every opportunity that comes your way. With a positive attitude, prayer, hard work, and a belief in yourself, you can achieve anything you set your mind to.
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS YOUR HUMAN POWER, AND IF YOU COULD HAVE ONE, WHAT WOULD YOUR SUPERHUMAN POWER BE?
If I chose a superhuman power, it would undoubtedly be the ability to fly.
This superpower would allow me to be wherever needed, helping others and positively impacting the world.
However, my true human power lies in my unwavering belief in myself, strong faith, and ability to connect with others.
These qualities have been instrumental in overcoming challenges and achieving my goals. Surrounding myself with positive and supportive people has been a key factor
in my success. Their encouragement and belief in me have helped me stay motivated and focused.
I believe that everyone has the potential to achieve great things. It’s about believing in yourself, setting goals, and taking action.
With the right mindset and support, you can overcome any obstacle and achieve your dreams.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE A YOUNG PERSON WANTING TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE WORLD?
Don’t let anybody ever convince you that you can’t do something or it is impossible.
Throughout my life, I’ve faced numerous challenges and setbacks, but I’ve always maintained a positive outlook and a belief in my Christian faith and ability to overcome adversity. One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned is the importance of resilience and perseverance. Even when faced with criticism or failure, I’ve always strived to learn from my experiences and move forward. I believe that setbacks can be opportunities for growth and development. By analysing my mistakes and making necessary adjustments, I’ve been able to overcome challenges and achieve success.
Another key lesson I’ve learned is the importance of surrounding yourself with positive and supportive people. Let go of people who are always negative, as they will suck you down, and surround yourself with positive people. By focusing on building strong relationships with people who believe in you, you can create a supportive network that will help you overcome challenges and achieve your goals.
Finally, I believe that a positive mindset is essential for success. By maintaining an optimistic outlook, you can cultivate resilience, motivation, and a belief in your own abilities. Even in the face of adversity, a positive attitude can help you find solutions
and persevere through challenges.
In conclusion, my journey has taught me the importance of resilience, perseverance, and a positive mindset. By embracing these qualities, I have overcome adversity and achieved my goals.
Overcoming Adversity = Resilience and Determination
LASTLY, TELL ME ABOUT YOUR BOOK, CAN DO! MAKING THE IMPOSSIBLE POSSIBLE AND HOW IT CAME TO BE.
“Can Do!” is a memoir that shares my personal journey and the lessons I’ve learned along the way. I’ve always believed in the
power of sharing experiences and inspiring others to overcome challenges and achieve their goals. It is essentially a leadership, business and motivational book.
The idea for the book came about after years of speaking at conferences and events. People often asked me where they could learn more about the principles and strategies I discuss in my talks. I realised that a book would be the perfect way to share my insights, lessons learnt and stories with a wider audience.
Writing “Can Do!” was a rewarding experience. It allowed me to reflect on my life, share my experiences, and offer guidance to others. I hope that readers will find this book inspiring and motivating.
the Relationship
THE EVOLVING RELATIONSHIP WITH PHOTOGRAPHY
In my work, I’m constantly made aware of the different personalities that arrive in front of my camera, and it’s difficult not to notice how these personalities can be boxed into various generations.
Compared to people my age, I’ve been seeing the comfort and excitement my younger clients have in front of the camera and the reluctance and sometimes discomfort they bring to the lens.
Each generation’s relationship with photography has been shaped by their time’s technological landscape and cultural trends. In this blog, I want to explore how Gen Z’s approach to photography contrasts with that of Millennials, Gen X, and Baby Boomers,
highlighting each group’s unique influences and practices.
1. BABY BOOMERS
Boomers, born between 1946 and 1964, primarily experienced photography through film cameras. The process of capturing, developing, and printing photos was a more deliberate and expensive endeavour. Photography was a special occasion for many Boomers, often reserved for family gatherings and significant events.
Photography for Baby Boomers has traditionally been about preserving memories. Family photo albums and framed pictures are common, capturing significant life events. While many Boomers have adapted to digital photography, they often approach it focusing on important occasions rather than everyday life.
2. GEN X
Born between 1965 and 1980, Gen X experienced a unique blend of analogue and digital photography. They grew up with film cameras and witnessed the emergence of digital technology in their adulthood. This generation often values the tactile experience of printed photos and the convenience of digital storage.
A mix of nostalgia and practicality characterises Gen X’s relationship with photography. They appreciate the traditional aspects of photography, such as printed photo albums, while embracing digital formats for convenience. This generation often uses photography to document important life milestones and family moments.
3. MILLENNIALS
As the first generation to experience the transition from analogue to digital, Millennials were early adopters of digital
cameras and smartphones. They witnessed the rise of social media, with platforms like Instagram playing a pivotal role in shaping visual culture. The availability of affordable digital cameras democratised photography, making it accessible to more people than ever before.
Photography for Millennials serves as both a creative outlet and a means of documenting life events. They are known for their focus on aesthetics, often curating their online presence with a blend of personal and professional content. The rise of “influencers” and personal branding is a testament to this generation’s importance of visual identity.
4. GEN Z
Born between the late 1990s and early 2010s, Gen Z has grown up in a world where smartphones with high-quality cameras are a staple. This generation’s access to advanced technology from a young age has made photography an everyday activity, seamlessly integrated into their lives through social media platforms.
For Gen Z, photography is a multifaceted self-expression, communication, and social activism tool. The prevalence of social media platforms like TikTok, Snapchat, and Instagram has made photography an essential part of their daily lives. This generation uses photography not only to capture moments but also to create and curate their online personas.
And it boils down to ...
This then explains the comfort in front of the camera. Gen Z grew up with a camera in their face and then a camera in their hand, making it super easy to capture their lives daily. In contrast, the Baby Boomers only got to experience the camera maybe once a month on very special occasions, which doesn’t give you much time to get comfortable with creating a permanent image of yourself. Also, Gen Z and Millennials are used to seeing pictures of themselves, which gives them more information of what they look like and what looks good on them and gives them a natural confidence as they know what they’re going to get. The Baby Boomers and, to some extent, the Gen Xs did not get the same amount of practice.
The uncertainty of not knowing the result can edge over discomfort and insecurity in front of the camera. Lastly, digital is disposable; you can take a thousand images and throw them away without cost. Baby Boomers are not used to this concept, making it essential for a photograph to work. So, while the Baby Boomer will feel the pressure of getting it perfect, the Gen Z will easily try the shot, knowing if they don’t like it, they’ll delete it and take another.
TAKING LIFE “LIGHTER”
I’ve also seen these characteristics travel across generations, so none of these boxes should be taken too seriously.
Marike Herselman
I am a professional portrait photographer who believes in the philosophy that “it is more important to click with people than to click the shutter.” - Alfred Eisenstaedt

Managing Director - Our Salad Mix
Why Soft Skills Matter More Than Ever in Marketing
In a world where technology and AI are reshaping every facet of business, it’s easy to get swept up in the excitement of automation, data analytics, and machine learning. Yet, amidst this wave of innovation, a core ingredient remains as crucial as ever - the human touch.
At Our Salad Mix, we like to think of it as the seasoning that brings the whole dish together—soft skills give our work its flavour, setting us apart in a landscape increasingly dominated by technology. In essence, soft skills are the human touch
that complements technical expertise in marketing and advertising. They are vital for creating meaningful connections, driving innovation, ensuring ethical practices, and achieving long-term success.
The allure of AI and technology is undeniable. They offer efficiency, precision, and the ability to analyse vast amounts of data at lightning speed. But while these tools are transforming how we operate, they can’t replicate the uniquely human qualities that drive connection, creativity, and trust. In an industry like ours, where relationships
and creativity are key, soft skills are not just nice to have—they’re essential.
Consider empathy , for instance. While AI can predict consumer behaviour based on data, it takes humans to understand and feel what the audience wants and needs. You can have all the data in the world, but it’s worthless if you can’t connect emotionally with your audience.
Empathy is the ability to step into someone else’s shoes. This is what transforms a campaign from a series of words and images into a message that resonates, compels, and moves people to action. It’s what turns a brand into a trusted friend.
This understanding allows us to create campaigns that resonate on a deeper level, speaking directly to the emotions and values of our client’s target markets. This emotional intelligence turns good campaigns into great ones, making consumers feel seen and heard.
Understanding diverse audiences and cultural differences and demonstrating sensitivity through soft skills is essential for brands operating in diverse markets –skills AI can’t fully replicate. It ensures that campaigns are culturally relevant and avoid missteps that could harm the brand.
The most successful marketers aren’t those who know how to analyse data—they’re the ones who understand the intricate dance of human emotions and can weave that understanding into their campaigns. They create stories that aren’t just seen but felt.
And in a world awash with noise, it’s the emotional connection that cuts through. In an era where consumers are increasingly aware of ethical issues, marketers with strong integrity and moral judgment are better equipped to make decisions that align with brand values and consumer expectations.
Creativity , too, remains a distinctly human
domain. While AI can generate content and suggest creative directions based on trends, the human brain connects disparate ideas in novel ways, crafting stories that capture attention and imagination and stand out in a crowded marketplace.
Communication is another area where technology can’t replace the human element. In a world where digital interactions are the norm, the ability to convey ideas, build rapport, and manage relationships is more important than ever. Whether pitching a bold new concept to a client or collaborating with a team spread across different time zones, effective communication is the glue that holds everything together. It ensures that all the moving parts of a campaign work in harmony, delivering results that exceed expectations. Soft skills like active listening, empathy, and effective communication help understand client needs and build long-term relationships.
Strong communication skills are necessary for conveying brand messages clearly and persuasively, whether in advertising copy, social media posts, or presentations. Understanding how to communicate effectively with different audiences— whether through storytelling, humour, or emotional appeals—can significantly boost engagement and conversion rates.
Moreover, as leaders in this ever-evolving industry, we must recognise the importance of adaptability. The rapid pace of technological change requires us to be flexible, to learn and unlearn continuously.
But adaptability isn’t just about keeping up with technology; it’s also about being open to different perspectives, embracing change, and finding opportunities and challenges. This resilience is a soft skill that technology simply can’t replicate.
As South African businesses continue integrating AI and advanced technologies, the temptation might be to focus solely on these tools to drive growth. However, the real magic happens when we blend technology with the human touch.
At Our Salad Mix, we’re proud to say that our flavour comes from this very blend— leveraging technology while staying rooted in the soft skills that make our work meaningful and impactful.
Ultimately, it’s not just about the tools we use; it’s about how we use them. In a world of endless possibilities, the human element—our ability to connect, communicate, create, and adapt— will always be our most valuable asset.

Why Being Nice is the New Nice-to-Have
Ah, soft skills. Those squishy, fuzzy, hard-to-define abilities that make us go, “Oh, yeah! I know what you mean!” But can we put our finger on what they are? And more importantly, why should we care?
As a professional speaker and magazine contributor, I’ve had the privilege of travelling the world, meeting fascinating people, and learning about the latest trends in the workplace. And let me tell you, the buzzword on everyone’s lips is “soft skills.” But what exactly are they? And why are they becoming the hard skills of the future?
Soft skills, in a nutshell, refer to those non-technical abilities that make us more, well, human. Empathy, communication, teamwork, time management, adaptability –the stuff your mom told you was important but you never quite listened to (sorry, Mom!).
Now, you might be thinking, “But wait, aren’t technical skills the ones that get me the job?” And to that, I say, “Not necessarily.”
Don’t get me wrong, technical skills are crucial, but they’re no longer the only game in town.
In today’s ever-changing work environment, soft skills will set you apart from the robots (yes, robots!). The human touch will make all the difference with automation on the rise. And that’s where soft skills come in – they’re the secret sauce that’ll make you irresistible to employers and clients alike.
So, what are some of these magical soft skills, you ask? Well, let me tell you ...
Empathy: Putting yourself in others’ shoes (even if they’re wearing ugly socks). And the list goes on ... 3 2 1 4 5
Emotional Intelligence: Being able to understand and manage your own emotions and those of your colleagues (no more office drama, please!).
Creativity: Thinking outside the box (or in this case, the Zoom meeting).
Active Listening: Paying attention to what others are saying (no more pretending to listen while scrolling through your phone).
Conflict Resolution: Knowing how to disagree without being disagreeable (no more passive-aggressive emails).
I know what you’re thinking: “How do I develop these soft skills?” Fear not, my friends! It’s easier than you think.
3 2 1 4 5
∙ Practice self-awareness (know thyself, and all that jazz).
∙ Seek feedback (ask your colleagues what you’re doing right and wrong).
∙ Take risks (step out of your comfort zone –it’s where the magic happens).
∙ Learn from failure (it’s not the end of the world, I promise).
∙ Most importantly, be open to learning (it’s a lifelong journey, folks!).
In conclusion, soft skills are no longer the nice-to-haves but the must-haves. They’re the key to unlocking your full potential and becoming the hard skills of the future.
So, go ahead, be nice, be kind, be empathetic. Your future self (and your colleagues) will thank you.

CAPE TOWN'S MULTIMEDIA PIONEER NICKAY PRODUCTIONS
Cape Town, a city celebrated for its vibrant culture and innovative spirit, is home to Nickay Productions Pty Ltd, a company that has redefined the standards of the multimedia industry. Founded in 2002 by Rhoda and Alfonso Stoffels, Nickay Productions began as a modest school and portrait photography business in the Table View, Milnerton area. Over the past two decades, it has transformed into a dynamic, fully digitised multimedia house, offering various services across photography, videography, print, and audio-visual (AV) sectors. This evolution is a testament to the company's commitment to excellence, community, and innovation.
A FOUNDATION BUILT ON COMMUNITY AND OPPORTUNITY
Nickay Productions was born out of a vision to bridge a gap in the market for managing large-scale events that individual photographers found challenging to handle
alone. By assembling a team of skilled professionals, the company met this demand and created meaningful employment opportunities within the industry. This commitment to community and opportunity became the bedrock of Nickay's expansion into a versatile multimedia service provider catering to diverse client needs.
From the outset, Nickay Productions set out to make a difference by focusing on quality, reliability, and client satisfaction. The founders, Rhoda and Alfonso, recognised the importance of community engagement and took active steps to build strong relationships with clients, collaborators, and the broader creative community. This approach enabled the company to establish a reputation for excellence while creating a supportive environment for creative talent to thrive.
EVOLUTION AND GROWTH IN A DIGITAL WORLD
In its early years, Nickay Productions
quickly gained a reputation for reliability and high-quality work, particularly within the corporate and educational sectors. By 2004, the company had pivoted its focus to these areas, securing prestigious clients and contributing to significant events such as the Opening Ceremony of Nobel Square at the V&A Waterfront, the State of the Nation Address, the launch of the South African Parliament Logo, and the African Region Commonwealth Summit in Cape Town.
Recognising the rapid changes brought about by the digital age, Nickay Productions swiftly embraced new technologies, transitioning from traditional photography to a fully integrated multimedia business. This strategic move allowed the company to stay at the forefront of the industry, offering cutting-edge solutions that align with the evolving needs of its clients.

freelancers and upholding high standards of quality and professionalism, Nickay provides clients with a reliable network of professionals under a trustworthy brand.
Nickay Productions' ability to maintain strong relationships with clients and freelancers is a cornerstone of its success. The company understands that its reputation is built on the quality of its services and the trust it has cultivated with its stakeholders. By maintaining open lines of communication and delivering
consistently high standards, Nickay Productions ensures that it remains a go-to choice for multimedia needs in the region.
COMMITMENT TO EXCELLENCE AND COMMUNITY
Nickay Productions' success is built on its ability to adapt, innovate, and maintain an unwavering commitment to excellence and community. The company has grown steadily, participating in prestigious events and closely monitoring market trends. As it continues to expand its offerings and grow its client base, Nickay remains dedicated to fostering a community of professionals who share its vision for quality and innovation.
The company's commitment to the community is evident in its approach to talent development. By offering opportunities to freelancers and emerging professionals, Nickay Productions has helped cultivate a new generation of creative talent in South
Africa. This emphasis on community-building has also strengthened the company's brand, as clients recognise the value of working with a multimedia partner deeply invested in the local creative ecosystem.
INNOVATING IN THE DIGITAL AGE
In recent years, Nickay Productions has established itself as a leader in producing high-quality content for online streaming services and social media platforms. The company specialises in public relations (PR) and marketing, strongly focusing on educational and promotional content that engages audiences and conveys specific themes or messages.
Their portfolio showcases various projects, from live-streaming events to promotional videos, all aimed at enhancing brand visibility and community engagement.
Nickay Productions' ability to navigate
the digital landscape has been key to its ever-growing success. The company understands that content must be visually compelling and strategically tailored to the intended audience in today's media environment. This approach has enabled Nickay Productions to build strong partnerships with clients across various sectors, including education, corporate, government, and nonprofit organisations.

WHEN YOUR LAWYER GOES SOFT
“ I want a bulldog – a street fighter!”
I can’t tell you how many times I have heard that over the years. I was a litigation attorney for over 15 years, and often, clients challenged me to be the fierce TV lawyer clients wanted.
Let me tell you something about a legal fight.
TIME IS MONEY!
It is expensive, exhausting and all-consuming. In certain cases, it can take four years for your matter to be heard, and anything could have happened to your opponent by then. Moreover, getting a judgment is one thing; executing it is another. What if your opponent has no assets or is no longer in business?
The first letter sent, or action taken by your attorney can set the tone for your whole matter. There are times when your attorney must go in guns blazing, but sometimes you need to know what the other side is accusing you of, the crux of the matter, and what is really going on. Things are not always what they seem to be, and getting to the nub of the matter requires a cautious approach.
So, what do you need from a lawyer when you or your business has a legal “all fall down”?
You want a lawyer with the soft skills to read a matter. Someone who works backwards from you wants to achieve and creates a strategy that most effectively gets you as close to that outcome as possible. You need a thinker, a strategist, a negotiator –someone who can be in it for the long haul. Most importantly, you need someone who
can tell it straight and not tell you what you want to hear. Your lawyer needs to have soft skills, which are more subtle than the brash and harsh clash of swords. This person may offer you alternatives such as mediation, arbitration, or negotiation and guide you to think with more than just your emotions or a desire to win.
But there are more important skills than t hose required to resolve a dispute, such as setting yourself and your business up to avoid them. This process involves establishing the ground rules of your business or the transactions it enters— someone who can talk to the lawyer on the other side. Someone who asks you question after question to develop a deep understanding of your needs and how your business operates.
You want someone with the soft skills required to lead negotiations, draft accurate agreements and have the hard conversations with you regarding where to push and where to give a little. This makes the difference between a lawyer and a trusted legal advisor.
The latter takes the long view, imagining the road your business will take and guides you through that process. This person becomes part of your roundtable, the people you trust to point out your blind spots and walk with you as your business innovates and responds to challenges and opportunities.
BULLETPROOF IS A FALLACY!
No situation or transaction is bulletproof, and you can’t stop someone from refusing to do what they are meant to or instituting legal action even where they can’t win. You can, however, make it easier for your litigation lawyer to obtain a good result for you.
So yes, you want a strong lawyer but not an overbearing one who doesn’t listen to you or consider your business needs holistically. There are horses for courses; sometimes you need a bulldog – a street fighter- and sometimes you need a hawk with a bird’s eye view of your business, its immediate needs, and its future requirements.
Choose wisely.

SLEEP
What is this? Can you eat this? The Unsung Hero of Fitness.
As a gym owner, I’ve seen countless individuals come through my doors seeking to improve their physical health. While exercise and nutrition are undoubtedly crucial components of a well-rounded
fitness regimen, one often overlooked factor can significantly impact your results: sleep.
Sleep is more than just a necessary break from the day. It’s when your body repairs, rejuvenates, resets and strengthens itself.
During sleep, your muscles grow, your hormones balance, and your immune system is fortified. Insufficient sleep can lead to many problems, including fatigue, decreased cognitive function, and increased risk of injury.
For athletes, the importance of sleep cannot be overstated. You have more energy, better focus, and improved reaction time when well-rested. Studies have shown that athletes who prioritise sleep often experience faster recovery times, enhanced performance, and reduced risk of injuries.
SO, HOW CAN YOU ENSURE YOU’RE GETTING ENOUGH QUALITY SLEEP? HERE ARE A FEW TIPS:
Create a sleep-conducive environment:
Ensure your bedroom is dark, quiet, and cool. Invest in comfortable bedding and avoid screens before bed.
Stick to a consistent sleep schedule:
Try to go to bed and wake up simultaneously each day, even on weekends.
Limit caffeine and alcohol: These substances can interfere with sleep.
Manage stress:
Practice relaxation techniques like meditation or deep breathing to help you unwind before bed.
Prioritise sleep:
Make sleep a non-negotiable part of your routine. Treat it with the same importance as your workouts and nutrition.
Remember, sleep is not a luxury; it’s a necessity.
By making sleep a priority, you’ll not only improve your overall health and well-being but also maximise your fitness potential.

BEYOND TECHNICAL CAPABILITY
WHY SOFT SKILLS ARE ESSENTIAL FOR LEADERSHIP SUCCESS
Gary Yukl, a well-known leadership academic, defines leadership as the process of influencing others to understand and agree about what needs to be done and how to do it and the process of facilitating individual and collective efforts to accomplish shared objectives (Yukl, 2020).
WHAT STANDS OUT FROM THIS DEFINITION FOR US IS:
• Leadership is an influencing and facilitating process
• There needs to be shared objectives
• There needs to be mutual understanding and agreement on what and how to get things done
• It entails individual and team effort
Ok … so how exactly do leaders achieve this?
Based on our experience and research, this combines hard and soft skills.
Hard skills are the technical skills required to accomplish the job, such as financial, technology, marketing, AI, etc. Learning these skills tends to be content and application-driven through formal education, e.g. diplomas, degrees, short courses, on-the-job training, mentorship and induction programs. The level of competence can be measured using tests, examinations and other assessments.
On the other hand, soft skills focus on working with people and building the company culture and an effective workplace environment. These include emotional intelligence; effective communication - active listening, empathy, providing constructive feedback with team members and clients; teamwork; negotiation skills; public speaking; adaptability; problem-solving; resilience; creative thinking; critical thinking; and mindfulness. In essence, it is the skills that transform leaders and followers personally.
Learning these skills takes collective time and effort through coaching and self-reflection - a leader’s conscious shaping of their actions and growth.
A common pitfall often evident within business leadership is that we get caught up in the allure of hard skills, the quantifiable and the technical, forgetting that true leadership hinges on the power of connection, empathy, and the often-underestimated realm of soft skills.
LET’S LOOK AT A FEW OF THESE ESSENTIAL SOFT SKILLS IN MORE DEPTH:
Emotional Intelligence: Leaders with high emotional intelligence are self-aware, understand their impact on others, and can regulate their emotions effectively. This enables them to build strong relationships, inspire their teams, and navigate challenging situations with composure. Think of a leader like Indra Nooyi, the former CEO of PepsiCo. She was renowned for her ability to connect with employees at all levels and foster a culture of empathy and understanding.
Communication: Effective communication is more than just conveying information; it’s about active listening, understanding different perspectives, and fostering open dialogue. Leaders who communicate clearly and empathetically create a culture of trust and collaboration. Howard Schultz, the former CEO of Starbucks, is a great example of this. He prioritised communication, focusing on building a sense of community and shared purpose within the company.
EVIDENCE OF SOFT SKILLS MASTERY CAN BE SEEN THROUGH A LEADER’S:
• Increased levels of personal confidence
• Willingness to take on tougher projects
• The carrying of more influence within their team and the organisation
• Effective in handling those “crucial conversations” and sticky situations.
• An empowered team that functions effectively without the leader’s constant control and involvement
Mastering soft skills isn’t just about creating a feel-good environment; it directly impacts the bottom line. Companies with leaders strong in soft skills like emotional intelligence and communication often see increases in employee engagement, productivity, and innovation, along with reductions in turnover and conflict. When both skill sets combine effectively, organisational outcomes are achieved healthily and sustainably.
In today’s rapidly changing business landscape, marked by globalisation, digital disruption, and a growing emphasis on teamwork and collaboration, soft skills are no longer optional but are essential for success. Technical expertise alone is not enough to navigate the complexities of the modern workplace.
From a business and organisational context, commitment to diversity and inclusion, for example, underscores the importance the company places on creating a workplace where everyone feels valued and respected. This aligns perfectly with emotional intelligence and empathy principles crucial for effective leadership.
Cultivating strong, soft skills is a continuous process of self-reflection, learning, and growth. In today’s modern milieu, corporates offer various resources and development programs to support employees in enhancing their
leadership capabilities, ensuring that we continue to nurture leaders who are technically skilled and deeply human.
When both hard and soft skill sets come together effectively, organisational outcomes are achieved in a healthy and sustainable way.
Werner and Dr Kerryn, both professionals deeply committed to effective leadership's power to drive change within organisations, met as doctoral candidate’s at UNISA’s Graduate School of Business Leadership. They are making significant contributions to the field of leadership academia and tactically within organisations, with a lens on Responsible and Ubuntu leadership. Their passion for leadership and academic pursuits have led them to contribute to advancing knowledge in their respective fields.

ITHE ART OF LISTENING
How Empathy Enhances Design
n the world of graphic design, technical skills are essential—but they aren’t the whole picture. As designers, we often focus on perfecting our craft, mastering software, and creating visually stunning pieces. However, there’s another set of skills that can truly elevate our work: soft skills, with empathy and active listening being at the forefront.
Empathy plays a powerful role in the design process. When we take the time to genuinely listen to our clients, we’re not just hearing their words; we’re understanding their stories, goals, and emotions. This depth of understanding transforms our designs from mere visuals into impactful messages that resonate.
Consider a client who wants a logo for their brand. By actively listening to their vision and understanding what their brand stands for, we can craft a design that tells their
story. We tap into the nuances of their brand’s personality, values, and aspirations, delivering a piece that becomes a true representation of their identity.
The most rewarding projects are those where you’ve connected with clients—understanding not just what they want but why they want it. It’s this deeper level of engagement that allows us, as designers, to create work that isn’t just beautiful but meaningful.
So, while perfecting that latest design trend or mastering new software is essential, don’t underestimate the value of soft skills. It’s the art of listening and empathising that can transform your role from a mere designer to a true storyteller.
Putting “Unity” Back In Community
South Africa boasts one of the most dynamic community radio sectors globally, serving as a lifeline for millions. These stations provide essential local news and information and maintain a strong sense of community, especially in areas where they are often the only source of locally produced content. However, despite their critical role, community radio stations are frequently underappreciated. They offer more than just news— they are the threads that weave the fabric of community life, creating a space where voices from all walks of life are heard and acknowledged.
THE POWER OF FACTUAL JOURNALISM IN COMMUNITY BUILDING
On World News Day, celebrated on the 28th of September, it's crucial to reflect on the significance of factual journalism in community building. Fact-based journalism
By Kim du Plessis
is a cornerstone of any functioning society, particularly locally. It goes beyond simply informing; it empowers individuals by providing accurate, reliable information that enables them to make informed decisions.
In contrast to social media's often chaotic and unreliable nature, community radio stations offer a more inclusive, constructive, and respectful platform for public discourse. They mediate discussions and encourage dialogue and diverse perspectives, which are essential for building a more unified society. In this space, communities often isolated from mainstream media production processes can actively participate and, more importantly, see themselves reflected in the media that serve them.
COMMUNITY RADIO: A CONDUIT FOR CHANGE
Community radio is more than just a
platform for news dissemination—it is a powerful conduit for change. It serves as a channel for community knowledge, a pillar of solidarity, and an arena for empowerment. This is especially true for young people, who find a voice and a platform in community radio to address the issues that matter most to them. By offering locally relevant content, community radio enhances the quality of life for its listeners, fostering a sense of belonging and unity.
INTRODUCING NEWSKOOP
Newskoop, a media content agency, is at the forefront of ensuring that even the most remote areas of South Africa have access to quality content. Specialising in sourcing, creating, and producing content for radio, Newskoop covers international, national, provincial, and community news. The agency produces news, finance, and sports content in English, Afrikaans, and IsiXhosa, ensuring that diverse audiences are catered to.
Newskoop's reach extends across the country, providing community radio stations with the content they need to keep their listeners informed and engaged. This content is crucial in connecting communities, offering them a platform to discuss local issues, celebrate achievements, and address challenges.
EMPOWERING THE NEXT GENERATION
Since its inception, Newskoop has recognised the importance of on-the-job training in nurturing the next generation of media professionals. Over the past seven years, the agency's internship programme has trained more than 100 students and graduates, providing them with the skills and experience necessary to succeed in the media industry. Many of these interns have built successful careers in various media houses across South Africa, with some even becoming integral members of Newskoop's editorial team.
This programme addresses youth unemployment and equips young people with the tools they need to contribute positively to society. In a country where youth unemployment remains a significant challenge, initiatives like Newskoop's Internship Programme offer hope, allowing young people to develop their talents and make meaningful contributions to their communities.
THE UNIFYING POWER OF COMMUNITY RADIO
Community radio is a powerful tool for uniting people, fostering dialogue, and driving change. It is a platform where every voice matters, and every story counts. Newskoop's pivotal role in supporting these stations ensures that communities across South Africa are informed, empowered, and connected.
In a world where misinformation and division are all too common, community radio, backed by fact-based journalism, offers a path towards unity. Newskoop is proud to be part of this journey, helping to build stronger, more cohesive communities through the power of knowledge.

GONANA GUESTHOUSE
Paternoster
Nestled in the tranquil seaside town of Paternoster, you would have found the first sustainable guesthouse built here. Just 2 hours out of Cape Town, this was the place to go for a restful time away from home.
The guesthouse entrance was secure, as you were given a code to gain entrance. Once you walked through that gate, you were greeted by friendly smiling faces, a pathway made of broken sea shells and whole sea shells packed on either side. Your second sight was a delightful small pool surrounded by indigenous plants, and deck chairs were placed around for that perfect tanning session.
Swedish owner and entrepreneur Jonas Sandström, inspired by the landscape, people, and light, had created a sustainable Afro-Scandi space where one could
reconnect to oneself, each other, and the planet.
As you entered the guesthouse - known as the apartment - the decor was so quaint and rustic in the colours of tans, biscuits, and creams, with a splash of colour on the bookcases of various unusual ornaments and books. A basket of fruit greeted you on the table, and the kitchen was equipped with a gas hob, fridge, and all the other elements you would have needed to make your meals. Warm drinks and condiments were there for your enjoyment. Just off the kitchen was an enclosed bathroom with a large shower. Towels were provided, and a few toiletries were also provided.
Up a winding wooden staircase, with a thick fisherman’s rope on the wall to help you up, was a beautiful bedroom in the same colour scheme as downstairs. The twin beds were pushed together, and the wooden headboard, tree trunk side tables, and cool white linens made you want to jump on and snooze. And what a delight,
the beds had an electric blanket to make for a cozy winter sleep. The doors in the bedroom opened onto a balcony decked with chairs and tables, and you could look out over the sea, which felt like you could almost touch it. Delightful!
Walking to the left of the guesthouse and along the path of shells led to another double-storey house, where you entered a delightful dining area upon walking up a winding wooden staircase. A long wooden table and benches looked out onto a balcony, which overlooked the rushing waves. Breakfast was included in your stay and was a delightful fresh mix of local organic products, which included muesli, cereal, fruit, nuts, seeds, crackers, muffins, different types of breads, cheese, cold meat, salads, and a choice of eggs done in various ways, from omelette to fried. It was truly yummy and a perfect way to start your day!
Instead of going to one of the town’s many restaurants, you could have booked a light supper if you would have liked to, but you needed to inform them at breakfast time. They also provided an organic cheese platter instead of the supper.
The staff were very friendly and helpful.
Also in this area were locally made gifts, leather key rings, honey, soaps, cloths, towels, and a range of organic skin
products called Simply Bee.
There was a table filled with games and couches to lounge in, read, and relax on— no TV, which was refreshing!
Once back downstairs and walking away from the pool and through a gate in the garden, you would have found yourself not even 20m from a white sandy beach with rolling waves. Walking along the beach, you could have found many shells and other marine-type items. The water was cold but very refreshing. There’s nothing like a dip in the sea!
It was a wonderful, peaceful experience in a setting that felt like a home away from home.
We highly recommend Gonana Collection, a member of Cape Country Routes !
