H AV E Y O U I M P L E M E N T E D YOUR COVID-19 POLICY

for your business yet? With many businesses grappling with the initial financial and operational consequences of lockdown, there has been no alternative but to resume trading despite the risks involved with the COVID-19 virus. For operations to run as smooth as possible under these circumstances it’s essential to create a COVID-19 workplace policy. This is your go-to document and in essence the “blueprint” of how to operate during the pandemic

6

with not only your business in mind, but the health and safety of your staff. WHY INSTITUTE A POLICY? • To cover employer and employees’ obligations and act as a guideline during the pandemic. For example, screening, sick leave, action plans for contracting the virus, UIF claims, working from home, online meetings, etc.; • To help communicate the safe return to work and what health

CONTRIBUTORS

and safety plans have been put in place. This is especially important as we know the COVID-19 virus will be around for the foreseeable future; • To identify and rectify any new risks which present itself when the staff return to the office. No plan is perfect and cannot account for every scenario. That is why the appropriate mechanisms must be in place to ensure your workplace risks are assessed periodically; • To hold both the employer and employee accountable in respect of how ‘returning’ to work will continue. If it’s by rearranging the office space or how remote working will be managed and measured.

Contact Silke Rathbone & Armand Briers at Labour Excel http://www.labourexcel.co.za/

Not only does this Policy create clear and concise guidelines, eliminating any confusion in the unfortunate event something does go wrong, but it keeps you on the right side of the law. In accordance with the latest Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, each workplace requires a COVID-19 workplace plan which adheres to several requirements. Let Labour Excel help you create your COVID-19 Workplace Plan, so that you can focus on your business.

CHEF OF THE YEAR

2018

Indulgences ... In keeping with our healthy you, healthy business theme, there is always a little space for an indulgence, and what better way than to have it homemade by your very own local Chef? Juan Neethling describes himself as curious, ambitious and adventurous, and if it gets his blood boiling, even better. He loves spending time with family, watching Moto GP, gardening and of course, cooking. He grows his own veggies and herbs and claims he can be a little goofy and silly at times, but just wants to live with passion. If you don’t find him in the kitchen cooking or baking up a storm, he will be tucking into a good bottle of wine with his wife, Tracy, their daughter Siena always playing nearby. 8

Juan started his Chef career at the Lord Charles Hotel in 1997 and just naturally gravitated to the kitchen. He loved the chaos, the noise, and the absolute rush & general mayhem that made up a typical day’s work. “I have worked in some amazing locations, with some great Chefs, in SA and abroad. For six years I cooked on a cruise liner, and have worked in Ireland, England and Italy, to mention a few of the 30 + countries I have had the pleasure of experiencing.” His work ethic is crazy and passionate. Juan believes that everything can be fixed through hard work and dedication, even though that thought pattern can be to his detriment at times. He leads through example, following everything through from start to finish. “I am creative and

need to be constantly, and believe that you must draw inspiration from everywhere, but always play “YOUR” game. Stay true to yourself always. Good food and good wine is my life, and I am proud of my work. Food is love, life & brings people together.” Currently, Juan is still permanently employed, and Chef JN has been a dream of his for a long time coming. With the COVID-19 pandemic, his dream was pushed into reality when he realised he had to supplement his income. WHAT’S COOKING IN THE KITCHEN? His products are all preservative-free and created in his home kitchen. They are tried and tested recipes which are of the highest quality and taste delicious. His deli produce is phase 1, and hopefully to be followed by private catering, private dining and bespoke functions.

That’s what she said ... BIANCA BENADE

Interview by Lisa Bell

BOUNDFIT, located in Milnerton, Cape Town, is primed to take you from sloth to superhero. They combine cardio and functional training, of which HIIT forms part of it, to assist you on your journey of health and fitness.

ism to this way of training. With Level 2 announced, they have opened their studio doors and are raring and ready to go, ensuring safety comes first. We chat to Bianca about BOUNDFIT and its place in the fitness world.

Owned and run by Bianca Benade, BOUNDFIT is all about helping you achieve your personal health goals, whatever you see that looking like. Due to COVID-19, they moved from in-studio classes to online, and they transitioned very smoothly and with professional-

Q1 – What makes you and your business unique? First and foremost, we want our members to step into a space that is not daunting, and we fully understand and appreciate that everyone has a different fitness level Q&A

all are welcome. We provide a space for them to achieve their health and fitness goals, whether that be to maintain a healthy lifestyle or to compete. Our community is all about the social aspect of training, to network, to get to know each other and to make friends, which has sadly been dulled by the pandemic and taking it online. Our core fitness technique is focusing on functional training using HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training), which is a full-body workout, but as always, the member can push themselves as hard as they want to. Q2 – Are you a smart worker, or do you give pure hard work? I am a bit of a procrastinator, so truthfully I am a bit of both. I may leave things to the last minute, but I do thrive on the pressure and can deliver. Q3 – Let’s go back to when you were 20, what advice would you give your younger self now? Trust your gut feel, although that is a bit cliché – if it says go for it – then go for it – if your gut says no – then hit the high road. And, save money from as young as you can.

Q4 – What would you say is the key element to maintaining a healthy lifestyle? A balanced lifestyle. While it is good to have a regime of eating and training, it can be hard to get back on when you stop that rigid routine. It can cause unnecessary anxiety. I see myself as less of a personal trainer and more like a lifestyle coach. I view clients as whole people and that we all must live. We have one life, so live it. BOUNDFIT is all about functional training using HIIT to as one of their techniques, which is a good combo of cardio, strength and functional training, which complements with other forms of exercise – yoga, Pilates, triathlons, running, etc. Q5 – What do you value most in life? Honesty and Family

“Strength through each stride.” -Bianca

15

Q6 – What failures in your life have taught you valuable lessons?

It helps that I am doing my passion. I wake up every day and help people to feel fit and good about themselves. I feel blessed.

I have not had a smooth sailing life, however, have not had any major failures. I have set goals, such as taking part in Comrades last year, but due to personal and business reasons, I decided not to take part – it was a hard pill to swallow –but, what I learnt from that is that one doesn’t have to always have a goal and not to be so hard on yourself. What happens today is important – the little everyday things.

Q8 – Do you have a daily routine, and if so, how does it help you with your day? My morning start is quite important for me. During the day, I have to talk a lot, constantly connecting with people, whether it be in a group or personally. So, I take 45-60 minutes in the morning just to be quiet. This is very important – my quite time. Then, I listen to a feel-good song. My night time routine is important as well, and I normally play an online card

Q7 – What is the one aspect/ element that has been a constant in your business journey? 16

Q&A

game just to zone out. Q9 – What is your superpower? Both human and superhero style My human superpower is that I put everyone else first. I always try and help over my means, which is sometimes detrimental to me. My dystopian superpower? Mindreading? Not so much. I think I would like to be able to teleport!

RE-OPENING SPECIAL Unlimited Classes at R700.00 per month for either 3/6/12 months.

Q10 – What has the pandemic/ lockdown time taught you? This time has taught me that the online space is becoming more popular and that there is a space for it, even with fitness and health. It may become a valuable tool going forward – and we may keep it going after lockdown is lifted. It is, for many, a time saver.

Online Class will continue at R300.00 per month on a month to month basis.

your business BY LISA BELL

The one thing that has become very clear to me after more than five years of helping business owners market their brand and wares is that every business has its own unique shape. What do I mean by SHAPE? 18

Much like humans, each business is different. The look, the feel, the voice, the fine nuances that often are only discovered at close contact, and the personality – there is not one human or business that has precisely the same set of all these elements combined.

FEATURE

was and how to hold it all together. MIXING IT ALL UP … In general, businesses are made up of 6 key facets –

- Strategy - Marketing - Finance - People - Technology & Equipment - Operations Ensuring you touch on each one regularly is fundamental to success. While I won’t pretend to be a business guru, I do know about one of these elements very well – MARKETING. ALL THE PUZZLE PIECES … Building your own puzzle can prove tough, especially when your puzzle pieces start to reach the 1000 piece mark and up. Sometimes you cannot find one of the puzzle pieces. Sometimes you just don’t know where that piece fits. Sometimes you feel like a five-year-old tackling your very first puzzle, totally confused and frustrated. Sometimes you know you need a helping hand but are not sure who to ask. One of the reasons why many businesses fail within the first year is because they didn’t know what their shape

Marketing is generally made up of these puzzle pieces –

MERCHANDISING That visual appeal is essential. Leave a memorable reminder of your brand wherever you can – by way of promotional material – both for your client and your staff.

Running a business is undoubtedly tough, but keeping a brand front and centre all the time takes blood, sweat and tears … and a little cash too. You don’t need to do it alone though …

ADVERTISING Yes, you have to pay to get your brand out there and noticed. Organic marketing is all fair and well, but if you want to reach a wider audience, you have to spend some money. This can be via social media, traditional media like magazines, newspapers, tv and radio, and printed options. SALES PROMOTION Product launches, activations, special offers, shows and the likes. Coach me!

Building Resourceful Employees #helpingYou2helpYourself

by Linda Remke

RESOURCEFULNESS STARTS WITH SELF Introducing Self-Awareness Tools and modalities helps people to see things differently and coaching assists people to tap into unlocking their resources. At the onset of lockdown and the pandemic, I realised that individuals needed a safe space to connect, ask questions and even vent. I reached out to my coaches within my platform, Valueneurs, and a few other key coaches, and together with Andre du Toit, The Big Positive Guy, we started our initiative #helpingYou2helpYourself. We invited the world to join us once a week to an online webinar, covering different and inspiring topics every week. What started out as a small endeavour grew and grew as the word got out about the help our 12 coaches were providing and all for FREE. After a successful 15 weeks, 24

the #helpingYou2helpYourself initiative ended, and we took the offering to market. Signing up none other than Ericsson, my amazing team and I are set to give of our expertise to the many needful employees of this aspiring company.

“When we change the way we look at things, the things we look at change” Linda is the founder and owner of Valueneurs. Her other business’ are Eveolve, assisting individuals & businesses utilising coaching, mentorship, facilitation, & branding expertise. And, soon Hello Coach, an app corporates can offer to their employees where they can reach a coach simply and in private.

If you’re invested in the future of your company, and want to offer your employees the sounding board they need so they too can tap into their Resourcefulness, then consider bringing this powerful team onboard.
