A Glimpse into Linton’s Past: The Story of John and Elizabeth Williams

This grave/monument has always fascinated me, from a child wandering through the Cemetery putting flowers on graves that looked forgotten and lonely to today, quite some years later.

So, I finally did some research to satisfy my curiosity.

This grave, located in the peaceful, bush setting of the Linton Cemetery, Church of England Section 8, grave 121, belongs to John and Elizabeth Williams of Happy Valley.

Wording on the left side of the grave is: Erected by Elizabeth Sarah

In Memory of her beloved husband John Williams of Happy Valley who departed this life 1st May 1878 Aged 57 years

John and Elizabeth lived at the “Waverley Paddock”, Happy Valley.

John was a miner, working at the Hedley Freehold Gold Mine, Linton, when he was involved in an accident that took his life He died on the 1st May 1878 from injuries received in the accident, and was buried at the Linton Cemetery on the afternoon of Friday 3rd May 1878, the Undertaker being R S Nelson, Linton His funeral was largely attended, including men from the adjoining claim.

A Glimpse into Linton’s Past: The Story of John and

Elizabeth Williams

(continued from front page)

Wording on right side of grave is:

ELIZABETH SARAH WILLIAMS

FELL ASLEEP IN JESUS NOVEMBER 23, 1890

They had been married for 8 years when he died, and they had no children from the marriage.

Their property was located at: Allotment 19, Parish of Argyle, County of Grenville, consisting of 68 acres, known as “Waverley Paddock”, Happy Valley

On their property they had a wooden cottage consisting of three rooms

Their property was fenced with wooden posts and rails and divided into three convenient paddocks and a garden.

At the time of his death John had:

40 shares in the Morey Freehold Company. 1/13th Share in Hedley Goldmining Company, Linton

Cash in the bank of 164 pounds,

13 head of cattle

11 sheep

2 dozen poultry

2 pigs

No debts due or owing.

There is no record of Elizabeth Sarah Williams being buried in the Linton Cemetery, just this inscription on the grave However it is still very possible that Elizabeth is buried in with her husband.

John Williams was born in England in 1821 His father was James Williams, and his mother was Sarah Williams (nee Berry).

John married Elizabeth Sarah Knight in 1869 in Melbourne, Victoria

His wife Elizabeth Sarah Williams was the Administratrix, granted administration of John’s Estate and effects, this was witnessed by Thomas Kennedy.

Elizabeth Williams stayed on at Waverley Paddock until at least 1881, when she advertised the property for was for sale in the Ballarat Courier on Tuesday 1st July 1881

Staying Healthy This Winter

Winter in Linton can be a beautiful time, but it also brings seasonal challenges for our health. Between colds, the flu, and shorter days, it's important to take extra care of both your body and mind. Here are some practical tips to help you stay well this winter.

1. Boost Your Immune System

Get Vaccinated: Protect yourself and others by staying up to date with flu and COVID-19 vaccinations.

Eat Well: A balanced diet full of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins provides the nutrients your immune system needs.

Consider Supplements: Vitamin D, C, and zinc may offer added support, especially if your diet is lacking.

Stay Hydrated: Don’t forget to drink plenty of water—even in cold weather.

Prioritise Sleep: Aim for 7–9 hours each night to allow your body to rest and repair.

Manage Stress: Try relaxation techniques like deep breathing, walking outdoors, or a quick chat with a friend.

Limit Exposure: Try to avoid crowded indoor spaces during flu season if possible.

Avoid Excessive Alcohol: Too much alcohol can weaken your immune system.

Get Natural Light: Even on chilly days, a bit of sunshine can help keep your vitamin D levels up and your mood steady.

2. Practice Good Hygiene

Wash Your Hands Often: Use soap and water for at least 20 seconds—especially after outings or before meals.

Cover Coughs and Sneezes: Use a tissue or your elbow to help prevent spreading germs.

Disinfect Surfaces: Clean frequentlytouched surfaces like doorknobs, phones, and keyboards regularly.

3. Stay Active and Warm

Keep Moving: Aim for 30 minutes of activity each day. A brisk walk, stretching, or even household chores count!

Dress Appropriately: Layer clothing to stay warm and protect hands, feet, and your head from the cold.

Try Indoor Activities: On wet or cold days, consider group fitness, dancing, or other indoor hobbies that keep you moving.

4. Look After Your Mental Health

Stay Connected: A phone call, coffee catchup, or community event can lift your spirits. Practice Gratitude: Taking a moment each day to reflect on what you’re thankful for can improve mood and perspective. Write it Down: Journaling can be a helpful way to manage stress or process feelings. Reach Out: If you’re feeling low, don’t hesitate to speak with a doctor, counsellor, or trusted friend.

LINTON BOWLING CLUB

Time to prepare for spring

With the upcoming season and pre pennant games nearly up on us, we need to prepare.

While considering injuries during lawn bowls one may tend to think, what can go wrong in lawn bowls? How can anyone possibly get injured in lawn bowls Although lawn bowls is a game not requiring sprinting, throwing or Jumping, people playing lawn bowls can still get sprains, strains and breaks!

Apart from the younger lawn bowlers you may see playing a championship match on TV, most players are 55 years and above and there are more male lawn bowl players than female.

The exercises below stretch different parts of the body and are adapted to be easier and safer for more senior players. (All but one exercise are done sitting.)

Hugging no one Easy exercise, just put your arms straight in front of you, then open them out as wide as you can. Repeat this 10 times Big Nods. Look down to your toes and then up to the sky 10 times Shoulder Rolls. Roll your shoulders back 10 times then forward 10 times Looking Behind Sitting in a chair place both hands on one hip then turn your body towards that side Repeat 5 times each side with a 10 second hold. Back of thigh stretch. Sitting at the edge of your seat, straighten one leg, and then reach towards it until you feel a stretch at the back of your thigh and knee Hold 10 seconds 5 times each leg

Calf stretch. Have your hands against a wall for balance, place one leg in front and one leg behind. Make sure both feet are pointing forwards, and then bend your front knee until you feel a stretch in the back leg Hold 10 seconds 5 times each leg

Hopefully you can understand my explanations. If these exercises cause pain, stop them immediately; there might be something else wrong with your arms and shoulders Get yourself to your local physiotherapist to get it checked out

Back of thigh stretch Sitting at the edge of your seat, straighten one leg, and then reach towards it until you feel a stretch at the back of your thigh and knee. Hold 10 seconds 5 times each leg

Other Safety Tips

Make sure you learn the correct technique for your lawn bowling. An incorrect technique and place unnecessary strain on structures in your body

Make sure you don’t slip and fall You can do this by making your footwear is not worn out, you have a non slip surface, or even get some balance exercises from your physio or fitness trainer

Take regular rests if you get tired during your bowling

Ensure that any hazards on your lawn bowl green are reported and dealt with at the earliest time.

Use special equipment like a stick, or bowler’s arm to help your bowling

If an injury occurs ..

Stop playing. If injury does not resolve then visit your local doctor or physiotherapist

Just a reminder that playing lawn bowls can be dangerous with over 50 bowlers in Victoria admitted to hospital last season. Common causes of injuries are falls, overexertion, repetitive bowling movements and being struck by a bowl Fall injuries usually occur when a player either falls backwards over a bowl; steps forward over the ditch, rather than sideways when crossing onto the green; or delivers a bowl with incorrect balance

LINTON PRIMARY SCHOOL

Welcome back!

The school holiday break means a short turnaround for Linton Primary School between editions of the Linton News.

During the break I enjoyed time along the rail trail and can say I was genuinely in awe of the beauty between Scarsdale and Linton. We hope to get students active on the rail trail as the weather improves!

We have a 9-week term ahead with some brilliant celebrations planned. Term 3 always includes the annual weeklong celebrations of Science Week and Book Week respectively which are always highlights for our students

Today (25 July) we have had a PJ Day – with all students (and staff!) wearing their PJs to school to raise awareness and funds for children in foster care. Our Environmental Leaders also managed to plant some trees before National Tree Day this weekend. The remaining photos are of our students busy learning, labelling new sports equipment, enjoying the sun and playing inside during a wet day timetable!

On August 8 we are participating in in a Free Dress Day and ‘Can Drive’ for Homelessness awareness and students will be donating all cans and money to the Linton Pantry. th

LINTON PRIMARY SCHOOL

End of Term Recap

To end our term 2 had express yourself day in the morning and disco in the afternoon. Express yourself day: for this day the STEAM leaders announced that you could wear free dress. We also announced that there would be a poster challenge and canvas painting. It was good fun

Disco:

For the disco we had everyone bring in snacks and food and we had all the children select songs for the disco itself. We played two games in the disco just for fun. Scarlett M.

2026 Foundation Enrolments

Enrolments for 2026 Foundation students have commenced. If you know of any families that will be sending children to Linton Primary School, please encourage them to come in and grab an enrolment form from the office If any other local families would like a tour, please do not hesitate to contact the school

I appreciate a great start to term.

LINTON & DISTRICT CRAFT GROUP

At Craft Group recently Raelene has been busy joining numerous crocheted Granny squares into this colourful and cosy jacket – just the thing for these cold winter nights.

Therese is making these lovely squares for her next quilt project using a red and cream palette

Also on the winter theme Pam is knitting a very warm looking woollen beanie

Meanwhile Monika continues to confound the group as to how she knits her socks inside out Not even Monika understands the how or the why of it Magic just happens

The Linton & District Craft Group meets every Thursday at the Linton Community Hub, from 10 am until 3 pm. New members are warmly welcomed

GOLDBRUSH PAINTERS

Although the cold weather persists, so do the Goldbrush Painters by regularly turning up at the Hub for the weekly Friday session. Along with the Linton Craft Group we are hopeful of a forthcoming positive response from Golden Plains Shire with regard to the supply and installation of adequate heating and cooling for the Linton Community Art Facility Fingers crossed as it can get quite chilly in that big room.

On a brighter note, there was a strong turnout of Goldbrush Painters for the launch of the Golden Spaces 2024 Summer Exhibition at The Well in Smythesdale The event, facilitated by Golden Plains Shire Arts & Culture Adviser, Dr. Fiona Lee, offered an insightful and revealing Q&A from Bev, Colin and Daryl about their beginnings, early influences and what inspires the working practice of each artist. The exhibition is available to view for another month or two before going to the Civic Centre in Bannockburn for the final leg of the tour

Members of the group are currently considering and preparing artwork to enter in the next iteration of Golden Spaces which will be the 2025 Summer Exhibition.

“If I could say it in words there would be no reason to paint “

LINTON & DISTRICT HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Report for August 2025

It has been a relatively quiet month with regard to events for our society. Perhaps everyone is laying low due to the cold weather. We did have an Open Day on 13 July and there is another one coming up in August Work goes on behind the scenes however, with answering research requests, exploring possible grants we could apply for and sorting and cataloguing our collection.

Meeting of the Golden Plains History and Heritage network

We attended this meeting in Inverleigh with representatives from the other historical societies in the Shire. We are all looking for historical stories from our respective towns to be collected and posted on a website where they will be accessible to locals and visitors alike. The purpose is to encourage and promote interest in the history of the Shire.

Open days

Our next two open days will be on 10 August 25pm and 14 September, at the Letty Armstrong Resource Centre.

You can find us on Facebook –https://www facebook com/lintonhistory - or on our website www.lintonhistory.org.au – or we are on email at: enquiries@lintonhistory.org.au

LINTON COMMUNITY HUB MANAGEMENT

Many thanks to all he community members who attended the recent Open Day on Sunday 15 June at the Linton Community Hub It was great to see so many locals meet with the Linton Community Hub Management Inc committee members and also have a chance to chat with several Golden Plains Shire Councillors

Those in attendance heard from the newly elected Mayor Owen Sharkey and the President of the Linton Hub committee President Darryl Lees. At the event, the Linton Hub committee was able to share that Golden Plains Shire Council had approved the extension of the licence agreement for another three years for the committee to continue managing the operations of the Hub This is a wonderful outcome and a direct result of the hard work of the community to retain access and management of the Hub facility for everyone

If you wish to book the Hub for an event or activity -please contact: Secretary Janet Pathe: jtpathe@gmail.com

LINTON & DISTRICT MEN’S SHED

JULY IN YOUR MEN’S SHED

The cold has kept our numbers down a bit, so an agreement was reached with the fellas to not open on Saturdays This has had a quite positive reaction, and the Mondays and Wednesdays being relaxed with no obligation to make the numbers To venture into the workshop and attempt a project one feels the necessity to achieve? Hands too cold to get much done. (sigh)

A brighter note Jeff Martin completed the cut outs of a number of bird nesting boxes Students from a variety of schools in Golden plains Shire were participating in the School Holiday Program, and spent a fine old time, supervised (?) by Staff, nailing the boxes together, donning masks, and painting their beautifully complete projects After which, the proud owners took their prizes home to be installed as birds’ sanctuaries A delight by all involved and others who were spectators. We hope for their success, and feedback from the students. Special thanks Jeff in garnering interest in our shed and amenities.

AUGUST IN YOUR MEN’S SHED

A very special event and day approaches. Wednesday 6 of August marks the TENTH ANNIVERSARY of the opening of the Linton And District Men’s Shed th

CARNGHAM LINTON FOOTBALL NETBALL CLUB

The Carngham Linton FNC participated in the TAC ‘Band Together Round’ for road safety at Newlyn on Saturday 26 July

In wet and wintry conditions, our footballers and netballers donned blue TAC arm bands in their matches. We also held a ‘Drive to Training’ night at Linton in the Thursday leading up to the game, encouraging our L plate juniors to get driving practice in night conditions.

The club has had mixed results on the field and court during July, with our injury depleted senior football team currently sitting on 5 wins for the season with 3 rounds remaining Our D grade and Under 17 netball teams have been our highest performing teams to date this season, both hoping to secure a finals berth in 2025 We wish all teams well for the remainder of the home and away season, with matches against Beaufort, Hepburn and Ballan coming up in August

It’s great to see upgrades to the netball facilities at the Linton Recreation Reserve are now underway. The new players shelters are a great addition, whilst work has commenced on renovating the old netball shed, which will be totally re-clad and turned into an office administration and storage space that will be utilised for netball and cricket Four new 200 lux LED light towers will be erected around the netball court and practice area as part of our ‘Play Our Way’ funding allocation We are also very pleased that new fencing and surfacing works will also be carried out over the off-season We thank the Golden Plains Shire for their continued support in helping to provide these upgrades

The Carngham Linton FNC will be holding premiership reunions for our 1985 Seniors & Reserves, 1995 Seniors & Reserves and 2000 Seniors & Under 17 football teams in our last home and away match of the season against Ballan at Snake Valley on Saturday 16 August. Commencing at 1pm in the social rooms, players from these teams are encouraged to attend. GO SAINTS!!!
