EDITORIAL A fresh approach to 2011! You are well into the swing of the year…but how is it going healthwise so-far? Have you got your exercise program on track? Are you eating foods that really feed you? Have you got energy for the day? How is your general mood-state? Here are some suggestions to keep you feeling clean, green and vital. A nutritious and energy-fueled approach is to start your day either with a fruit and nut-based smoothie with added cinnamon to balance your blood sugar levels, a protein-based breakfast (egg, fish or hummus) or a green juice with apple, celery, cucumber, lemon and ginger, followed by some fruit, nuts and seeds. Have a mid-morning fruit, a salad and protein-based lunch to give you sufficient fuel for the day. Choose healthier snacks, such as sushi, salads, vegetables, fish, chicken, turkey etc. and leave the pastries, bread, French fries, baked potato, rice and sweet-desserts out. If you cannot resist them, then make sure the next meal is mainly fruit and vegetables. Don’t forget to drink water throughout the day. If you are having a braai, put a variety of chopped mixed vegetables with fresh herbs and a dash of olive oil in tinfoil on the coals as an alternative to meat, e.g. asparagus, mushrooms, fennel, baby marrows, corns, colourful peppers, baby tomatoes etc. If you are having a sociable evening or long lunch with a few glasses of wine, drink water alongside your alcohol to reduce dehydration later. Peppermint, fennel or root ginger tea before bed, after any overindulgence will help settle nausea and bloating. After the long summer a good cleanse is in order. Herbs to consider taking would include Cyanara scolymus (Artichoke), Silybum marianum (Milk thistle) or Taraxacum officinale radix (Dandelion root), which support the liver, protect against liver damage and restore the liver. A good general tonic for this time is Ashwaganda. These are best taken in tablet or tincture form. Consult with your local phytotherapist to avoid standardised extracts. Herb teas that will support your nervous and digestive system include chamomile, fennel and lemon balm or licorice, ginger, dandelion and rose bud tea. Four natural laws which are useful to observe are: The law of nourishment, movement, recuperation and sanitation, which includes good food choices, exercise, rest/sleep and elimination. This requires a level of balance and moderation to maintain well-being before the weather gets too cool for outdoor activities and before the winter hibernation sets in when we tend towards richer and heavier food which take their toll on the digestive system and the liver.

What Was Why do we let “what was” have an impact on now? Breaking and destroying what we have now? Why let the negative in our past ruin what we have going for us right now? The baggage of unresolved issues, unpleasant happenings, fear, pain or disappointment that we carry unnecessarily with us wherever we go holds very little positivity. The lessons we have learnt from these should teach us not to let history repeat itself and disrupt our lives today. How often do we add more negative things to the already heavy baggage that we cart around with us day to day? It is never too late to take responsibility and ownership of our lives and learn from past mistakes and failures and use it as a positive tool to move on and make a better more positive future for ourselves. In order to help with this process we need to sort through these things that have negatively impacted our lives. We need to resolve them and remove them from the heavy baggage and lighten our load on our journey forward. If we find this difficult to manage on our own we need to find someone we trust who can be a steady support to help step by step or in whatever way we may need to tackle this process of resolution. Release the things that are holding you back and possibly affecting those closest to you with its negativity. We unknowingly allow the baggage to affect those innocent people around us by decisions we make, the way we react to them or even by just lashing out when is uncalled for. © Wendy A. Roberts 2010
EDITORIAL Therapists form Magenta volunteer group to heal the community
CHOCOLATE & CHEESE Who are you that claims to be, a reflection of the one that is me. I know I’m tall, slim and fine, some more cheese, but hold the wine. How did you acquire that new bulge, from the chocolate mousse I did indulge.
A group of South Peninsula therapists calling themselves Magenta have volunteered to help all members of the Community and to uplift those Healers who are feeling “burnt out” from long hours of work. Motivated by Angela Taylor of Fish Hoek Tourism, a former committee member of the Positive Health Association (PSA) in Zimbabwe, the group comprises Robert Shaw (Reflexology), Paul Parker (Body Stress Release), Jenny Bovim (Thai Massage) and Theresa Millar (Metaphysics). Taylor completed numerous courses, including Reflexology and Aromatherapy, under the auspices of the PSA which taught Homeopathy and Naturopathy to any group who wished to learn more about Natural Health. She hopes that the idea will spread and that other communities in the area will learn to fulfil a role which Churches do not have the manpower to maintain. “It is now that I and the other members of Magenta can apply the principles learnt through the PSA so that we, as the layman, can heal the sick of the community”.
