Successfully building a thriving arts environment for the benefit of ALL South Carolinians, the SCAC has been behind-the-scenes busy bees for over 40 years. Check out our next “Growing Places” issue for scoop on their The Art of Community: Rural South Carolina initiative! RUH ROAH! DID YOU KNOW? The SC Supreme Court just let us know that the state’s river waters are not important enough to protect!

Despite signs of concern such as uproar over the continuing controversy over the “potato farm” issue dating from 2013 (billions of gallons are pumped seasonally out of the small South Fork Edisto River)… and a lawsuit filed by the South Carolina Environmental Law Project against the S.C. WE LOVE EVENTS! Since events and helping with events both large and small is a huge part of what we do at lily Mag, and since I’ve been helping my awesome future in-laws with the planning of a luxe, sustainable Charleston wedding this summer, team lily has met and worked again with some of the most amazingly talented local event gurus Charleston has – and that’s saying something, considering this town is famous for throwing some truly swank shin digs! While picking a favorite host, hostess, venue or menu is rather like choosing a favorite child (I mean, how DO you choose the best of what is the world’s best?), we do believe we have some local people, places and venues that are worthy of waxing poetic. We hope you are inspired by this issue of lily Magazine to support these folks and this community as we all hop on the trend wagon of soiree’s that are good for the soul – and the environment too! And we know that you will enjoy getting to know people who truly CARE about what they are doing for a living and how they are doing it! That is SO lily!!!

CHALLENGE

Make your soiree, large or small, more sustainable – it’s EASY! (Check out lily-magazine.com/sustainable for a go-to list!) • Instead of using balloons, use reusable Chinese lanterns. • Instead of driving separately to downtown locations, use SCOOP, Charleston’s own FREE electric car service. • Take your guests and loved ones to restaurants who source responsibly. • Instead of using plastic cups, use affordable, washable and totally cute jelly, jam and canning jars. • Instead of using paper napkins, use washable linens – and be sure to launder them at one of the many “green” laundromats in town. • Instead of using plastic utensils and paper plates, use washable and reusable serving ware and dishes found anywhere from your mom’s attic or yard sales to the dollar store! • Instead of renting a venue that’s a wasteful money guzzler, choose one that is committed to making a difference!

In short, take a moment to think, “How can I make a small decision with a big impact?” whenever you’re ready to paint the town or throw a ‘do!

Student designers with heart.

The Art of the Art Institute: These student designers showcased their final projects in a lily Mag hosted fashion photoshoot at The Gibbes! How lucky are we? After meeting the awesome art steward Zinnia, we had a close encounter with Lynne Riding, one of the fabulous fashion faculty from the Charleston branch of The Art Institute. We put the two entities together for a soulful Sunday where we all highlighted the ideal of sustainable fashion at the end of Fashion week. The challenge and their final projects were to use refuse and cast-away objects discarded from events to design historically-inspired and ultra-modern new fashions. We were blown away by their talent, their enthusiasm and their beautiful works of art!

What an agony not being able to showcase every wonderful student and design in one feature! PLEASE go online to lily-magazine.com to see each image from this fun filled shoot and some behind the scenes action as well.

Weston Carlyle Inclusive We’ve been having a great time working with our new friends Elliot Carlyle and Mich Weston, especially during fashion week. And we’re partnering on some really interesting projects in the coming year! Who are they? WESTON CARLYLE can be everything from a temporary leadership team when a person, company and / or brand needs direction and momentum to a permanent partner, heading up campaigns and organizations in their branding and development. It’s important to have help like theirs because it’s one thing to have a brilliant idea, but it’s quite another to bring it from conception to successful fruition! We know a little something about that! In a nutshell, they “carry influence” – meaning they mentor and equip individuals and organizations within what they call “The 7 Mountains of Culture: Arts & Entertainment, Media, Business, Government, Family, Education & Religion.” Well, that covers it all!

Did you know that “biodegradable latex” Is BOGUS?! Latex is for losers, lanterns are lovely!

Tiny decisions, huge impact.

SUSTAINABLE SOIREES: Why balloons blow! BALLOONS KILL WILDLIFE AND POLLUTE THE EARTH

Beach litter surveys have shown the amount of balloons and balloon pieces found on the beach have tripled in the past 10 years. And many other parks and property owners have also reported increased balloon debris discovered throughout natural settings and wildlife habitats. While some balloons burst, others just gradually deflate. But they all fall back down to Earth where they wreak havoc on wildlife.

This is a photo of all the plastic found in a small green sea turtle that stranded in South Carolina. Credit: DuBose Griffin

Balloons Blow (balloonsblow.org) explains, “The animal is usually killed from the balloon blocking its digestive tract, leaving them unable to take in any more nutrients. It slowly starves to death. The animals can also become entangled in the balloon and its ribbon making the animal unable to move or eat. Balloons are a wasteful, single-use product that quickly becomes trash. It is irresponsible for organizations and companies to use helium-filled balloons as promotional products or fundraising, as they have such a high probability of ending up as flyaway litter.”

This young Screech Owl was found in Pinellas County, Florida, hanging by its wing, for who knows how long, at Sawgrass Park. They were able to get a ladder, cut him down and bring him to a sanctuary, but sadly this bird didn’t make it.

day or night, inexpensive japanese lanterns are a more elegant impact than polluting balloons.

RATHER THAN GOING WITH NEGATIVE-IMPACT CHOICES, TRY BEING SUSTAINABLY CREATIVE: DON’T USE: Release balloons, butterflies, doves or other wildlife or “Sky lanterns” that have live flames in them (they start fires!)... INSTEAD, USE: Plantable seed products, streamers, flags and banners, kites, garden spinners, ribbon sticks and dancers, bubbles, bunting, pinwheels, tissue paper pom poms and other objects, floating flowers or petals, painted stones or sticks, candles and luminaries… easy choices that make for an easy conscience! SO lily! for the same price as bunch of balloons, a bubble machine can make any event enchanting.

The SC Aquarium Editor Lily was blown away when her beloved stepson and his bride-to-be chose The SC Aquarium as the site of their upcoming June wedding. What they didn’t know was that her own husband had proposed to her in that very spot (a diver with a sign in the shark tank!) years ago. But the full-circle moment was made even more special when the lily team discovered that the aquarium is a ZERO WASTE FACILITY! Talk about sustainable events – insert lily happy dance, woo hoo! WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? All organic waste and compostable items from catered offerings will be collected and brought to compost stations provided by Food Waste Disposal (meaning it will be composted). Diverting compostable items from landfills reduces the formulation of harmful byproducts like methane – a potent greenhouse gas. It also decreases the ability for pollutants to reach surface water. The use of composted food waste improves the health and structure of soil, increases drought resistance and reduces the need for water, fertilizers and pesticides! This other-worldly wedding with harbor views and sea-life splendors will be featured in an upcoming issue of lily Magazine.

What a place for events! The Aquarium Galleries and Harbor Overlook accommodates guest counts from 50 to 500 with gorgeous space for food and action stations, bar service, dance floors and musical entertainment. Personalize your event with one-of-a-kind experiences including animal encounters, divers sharing your personalized message in their legendary tanks and incredible photo opportunities.

Venues with unsurpassed views! The Charleston Harbor Resort offers a wonderful variety of venues for anything from intimate gatherings of several guests to grand celebrations for up to 500, including:

For private dining, The Charleston Harbor Fish House provides additional venue options for rehearsal dinners, bridal luncheons, brunches and more. We love that The Fish House has received the South Carolina Aquarium’s Good Catch Award! When you pick your menu for your own special event, you know it will be seasonally and locally sourced. So lily!

The Yacht Club The Lookout Pavilion The Harborside Lawn The Sunrise Terrace

BONUS!! Our fav special events maven, Lisa thomas and the talented crew from Ooh! Events (p.14), will be the dream team that makes this event gorgeously unforgettable!

“Disease managment vs prevention: which should win? If prevention prevailed, what mega drug companies would lose billions of dollars?”

Science and nature, a beautiful harmony. Are Diets Done? We love this gorgeous gal! And because we believe in her work, we are shamelessly plugging her new book – cause that’s how we roll… if we believe in someone or something, we support and encourage! Meet LeeAnn Rawson, a local Integrative Nutrition Health Coach who not only breaks through the confusion generated by the multi-billion dollar diet and weight loss industry, but also helps shed light on the truth of preventative health care and how nutrition and vitamins are often seemingly miraculous (and ridiculously simple) tools for anyone facing a health or weight challenge. Her soon to be published book, entitled The U Diet: And why it’s not really a diet because diets don’t work, is a great, cinchy-yet-informative read. By being brave enough to share her true story of surviving lymphoma and

developing a simple 5 step program for ANYONE looking to make a difference in their health and life, LeeAnn takes the reader through her and their own journey to maximum health.

LeeAnn Rawson is a Certified Professional Coach who received her training with The IAHC (The International Association of Health Coaches). iahcnow.org

WHAT WE LOVE Well, first, there’s the humor – our readers know we love fun and LeeAnn’s a great story teller. Then there’s the simple honesty of a true story. It’s brave to tell the truth, not only about health scares and miracles but also the life challenges we all face, from crazy relationships to difficult choices. And lastly, although the book is a zippy read, it’s chock full of fast facts that make you think and real-life, doable tasks and activities that make a journey to renewed wellness a much less intimidating path than we imagine. Under the knife or under the gun??? It was when our third loved one in one year was rushed and bullied by hospitals bent on surgery that team lily quickly found an excellent Readers Digest article entitled, 50 Secrets Surgeons Won’t Tell You (all quotes refer to that article, found at rd.com). After a couple of calls to friends/loved ones in the medical field, we just knew we had to share at least a few precautions about what to do – and not do – when a doctor is pressing you for surgery. RESEARCH / 2ND OPINION. Suggested surgeries are sometimes not only unnecessary but odds of negative after effects or risks are sometimes far worse than the odds of something bad happening if no surgical procedure is performed.

DON’T ASSUME $ ISN’T BEHIND THE PRESSURE. Surgeons can have an inherent financial conflict of interest. “That’s because they are paid approximately ten times more money to perform surgery than to manage your problem conservatively.” —James Rickert, MD About 25% of operations are unnecessary, but administrators email doctors telling them to do more. “...This is private hospitals pushing doctors to generate more money by doing more procedures. It goes on at America’s top hospitals....” —Marty Makary, MD DON’T LET THEM RUSH YOU IF IT’S NOT A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH. Even a few hours or days (and hopefully much longer) to consider, discuss and consult is better than making a snap

decision that cannot be reversed. In many cases surgeons rush patients who have, in fact, had an unknown health ailment for years. If you’re feeling rushed, bullied or scared, that’s a red flag to slow down and take some time to educate yourself. “Always ask about nonsurgical options and whether there’s anything wrong with waiting a little while” REFERRALS? “Referrals may be politically motivated or be given because the doctors work within the same multi-specialty group.” —Howard Luks, MD TESTING? “Years ago, a patient sent his slides to three different pathologists and got three different answers” says the article. “I got very upset on hearing that. Now I never rely on just one pathology exam.

If your doctor finds something, ask him to send your slides to a nationally recognized reference lab– not just one or two slides but the whole lot—and get a second interpretation.” —Bert Vorstman, MD DON’T BE AFRAID TO BE A PAIN! Chances are that when you question your doctor, bring in research, demand detailed answers and question his or her or the facility’s creditials and experience, you WILL be branded “A pain in the neck.” The truth is, no matter how skilled, honest or good the person in question is (or how bad), your health and well-being is worth fighting for! Disclaimer: We’re not trying to imply that all surgeons are like those represented here or to urge readers not to have necessary surgeries. But we are of the opinion that 25% of surgeries being unnecessary is a clear indicator that calm, rational decision-making is crucial for us all.

WHAT THE CLUCK? Diagnostic errors may account for the permanent injury or death of up to 160,000 US patients each year! When ALL medical errors are taken into account, the rate of medical harm in US daily is estimated over 40,000. —NATIONAL PRACTIONER DATA BASE

social getting

The most important social media content element is authenticity.

The business of doing business.

There are certain things we’re seeing over and over as we endeavor to help our fellow entrepreneurs get to their next level. We’ve asked Mackenzie to share.

The Top 5 Social Media Mistakes Small Businesses Are Making: 1. “Hiring” a son/

It’s hard to believe these gorgeous gals are gurus too! But thanks to Asheton and Mackenzie, we have clients enjoying huge ncreases in interaction and traffic in their social media with the help of The Fig & The Vine / lily Mag management of accounts!

daughter/niece/ young person with no formal experience to do it. Just because they are young and actively use social media, does not mean they can use it effectively to promote your business. Brand awareness and authenticity are key.

2. Thinking it is easy. Social media marketing is a strategic skill that 22

LILY-MAGAZINE.COM | WE LOVE EVENTS! 2017

requires expertise, knowledge, and patience to adequately portray the message of your brand.

3. Thinking quantity outweighs quality in terms of followers! It’s not always all in the numbers! 100 engaged and loyal followers is a million times more effective (and profitable) than 1,000 unengaged, random followers who do not interact with the message you are sending or respond to what you or your business are producing.

4. Not having a strategy. If you are haphazardously posting with no clear objective, your audience will pick up on it and it won’t help further the success of your business.

5. Not interacting back with your followers. When a follower asks a question or comments on your post, answer the question or acknowledge the statement.

Butter Tapas and April Robinson: a Sweet and Salty Experience!

Butter Tapas. 5070 International Blvd., Ste. 108. North Charleston (just across the road from the No Chas Coliseum)

The lovely, elegant Miss April is just the kind of person lily Mag loves: an indie entrepreneur who puts her passion into what she does for a living – and creates inspired dishes that are mostly locally sourced, even if globally inspired! Beginning her career as a cupcake Queen, April soon had a passion to extend her style and palate-withpanache into a realm and an events service business that elevates all comfort food to new levels. The result is her excellent, full service Tapas restaurant, a cool, serene oasis tucked into the most unlikely of bustling shopping strips. The menu is perfection (our favs include local shrimp ‘n grits, lobster corn dogs, zuchinni chips and the pear salad) – and don’t worry, she still makes her famous cupcakes for the sweet tooth that invariably follows a savory treat. But be warned, they sell out quickly! Look for April at some upcoming lily Magazine events: After all what’s the use in hosting ‘do’s unless you hire some kindred spirits to help you celebrate?! Executive Chef April’s progressive lowcountry cuisine is seasonally driven and globally inspired.

Sweet and So lily. By Asheton Rose Oh suga, suga, honey, honey… have you heard about the latest and “sweetest” alternative to traditional waxing? You might want to think twice before you book your next hair removal appointment. We’ve got some sweet and sugary facts on why you should consider body sugaring instead of traditional waxing… Body sugaring is an ancient Egyptian hair removal phenomenon that has long taken the natural beauty scene by storm, giving traditional waxing a run for its money. And it’s right here in Charleston! Meet the wonder woman

behind our local organic beauty scene, Christina Mikolacjcik-Edles, a dedicated mother of 5, wife, owner, esthetician and master sugarist of the local organic boutique, Sweet 185. Sweet 185’s philosophy is to embolden everyone to be kind to their bodies by adopting body sugaring over traditional waxing. Christina and her staff educate and encourage clients to be mindful of what products they put on their bodies by encouraging them to treat themselves to their organic spa and holistic massage services which utilize all-natural products. Products are most often locally sourced and always environmentally friendly! Can you say, “So lily!?” Sugaring is the gentler form of hair removal. The sugar paste used in the process is made from sugar, water and lemon juice. This natural paste is kept at room temperature

allowing it to adhere only to dead skin cells, whereas waxing is a HOT chemical resin that adheres to live skin cells, which causes that intense burning sensation and redness. OUCH! Unlike waxing, sugaring removes the hair in the direction it grows, making you less susceptible to those pesky ingrown hairs and infection. Waxing can lead to allergic reactions, scarring, and even discoloration of the skin. Think about it! You are putting a hot chemical resin on your body that causes you pain and discomfort. So let’s show our bodies some love by being mindful of the side effects, both beneficial or harmful, of the beauty treatments we choose. We support Sweet 185’s campaign to be kind to our bodies!

DOWN THE DIRT ROAD: What’s up at Wadamaco Farms Lily Herndon Weaks

BEAVER MEDICINE Straight from the ‘Co (nickname for our farm), this is the best business advice I ever got. The fact that it came from furry, flat-tailed mammals is entirely immaterial. They taught me what to do and brought a great solution to an entrepreneurial challenge. I’m literally writing a book about it with this title. You see, Cherokees believe that whenever an animal becomes particularly prominent to you during a certain time period it brings “medicine” – a solution, cure or some wisdom. So rather than cuss and stamp over the fact that the beavers had chewed down some of our bald cypress trees we planted years ago, I suggested to my husband that we figure out what the beavers were trying to tell us. After a long walk and a cocktail, he, too, finally saw the wisdom of our resident beavers (the Corralejo Reposado may have had something to do with it). So here is your beaver medicine. WORK WITH WHAT YA GOT! You don’t see beavers running out to the beaver bank to get a loan to buy the wood to build their huts and dams do you? Or wringing their furry paws over the fact that there hasn’t been enough rain to flood their favorite canal or that this tree is just too huge to contend with… To translate that lesson to humans, a frequent trap of wouldbe entrepreneurs is thinking it’s not possible to begin for a variety of reasons: Not enough money, time, experience, resources… or that everything has to be exactly perfect before starting out. Or that it’s go big or go bust. Birthing a business is like getting pregnant and having a child. There is never is an ideal time. And no matter how much you plan, there will be a thousand unexpected things that pop up that you must deal with before bringing that bundle of joy into the world anyway. And it’s a LOT more work and emotional highs and lows than you imagine. So the first question shouldn’t be HOW to launch your dream

business, but rather IF you should at all. If you’re not willing or viably able to commit to giving it a real shot for at least 5 years (it can take that long to get a business from sucking resources to paying for itself to actually turning a profit), then you shouldn’t do it. However, if you are brave and determined and committed enough, you don’t have to wait for the perfect everything. You can conjure up the ingenuity to figure out how to meet your challenges, one by one. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF EVERY ADVANTAGE Beavers have a clear goal in mind all the time. No matter what the circumstances, challenges or life events, they want to create dams and beaver huts - to build their beaver business. They know this. They are ALWAYS at the ready. Having a clear goal in mind helps them to bide their time until a window of opportunity opens for them. The portion of the river where our farm is has a narrow riverbed, overhung with majestic hardwoods. Its banks are dotted with fallen trees that slowly decompose into the water, creating the famous blackwater river system we’re familiar with. It is during times of rain that short periods of flooding occur and the water spreads out into a vast, swamp-like environment.

The beavers are the first to take advantage of this opportunity: Dry woods and trails become beaver highways! They hurry, scurry, worry, working overtime during this special period when their clumsy earth-bound bodies become streamlined swimming machines. They dart to and fro, bring their young kits out for training and make their way to the large, juicy trees they’ve had their eyes on for months. Morning, noon and night they work, knowing that once the floodwaters seep into the sandy, limestone ground beneath the woods and the banks are high and dry again, there will be no floating those precious resources and materials down to their desired destinations. It’s much easier to float something than to drag it. So the message for us is, have a clear goal in mind all the time. Whether it’s the business itself or the use of the business to get you to another goal, just knowing what you want is half the battle. And be ready to jump at EVERY opportunity you get to achieve the next step towards your future! lily Mag Brags Whatta year this has been! Who knew that we would get up to so many fun high jinks during our first year of publication? Here are just a few highlights! We started our very own Meetup Group, EAT, DRINK & BE LOCAL! Sign up and join us for some fun-lovin’ locavore and sustainable parties all over town! Check out meetup.com/Eat-Drinkand-Be-Local/ today. We felt SO fashion forward as we joined our colleagues from

CrowdReach and Weston Carlyle in the Gwynn’s VIP tent at Lexus Charleston Fashion Week! Thanks so much CR crew and Trey Rust for helping us to share this awesome event with our star clients. The lily Mag social media dream team also had a blast helping Maris DeHart with the “Street Style” images that captured the creative spirit of the event and Charleston! And how cool was their Style Lounge?

What fabulous fun we had sponsoring at Fleet Fest! We adore Fleet Landing – not only a scrumptious and perfectly executed menu but sustainably sourced as well. And with that awesome music by Little Bird (thislittlebird. com), we rocked it out at this local family-owned restaurant that is also a recipient of The South Carolina Aquarium’s Good Fish award. Whoop whoop! Our locavore party with Hed High Media and Lowcountry Local First was tons of fun – Thanks

to our own wine guru Stephen Bates for helping us to choose the perfect bubbles and wines for the occasion! We give a high five to Hed High - not only for being an outstanding media company but also having a completely rocking venue. And of course we LOVE our kindred spirits-and-partners at Lowcountry Local First. hedhi.com and lowcountrylocalfirst.org. And finally, we had two Spark! Award nominations from the American Marketing Association. Not bad for our first year!
