I’ve been so inspired this issue by talking with the ingenious people and hearing their surprisingly cost effective solutions we’re featuring that help create an environment that encourages Charlestonians to get moving! Not just physically by hopping on bikes or walking to work or on errands but also progressively, so that we can hold our own with any city in America when it comes to community and environmental concerns. Reports show that not only are more people biking and walking to work and on errands than ever but also that the more people bike and walk, the FEWER accidents there are involving bikers and pedestrians. The more drivers see folks biking and walking, the more careful and aware they are. And with so many examples to follow of cities and towns who transform their images, their residents’ lives and entire communities through bold-yet-totallydoable initiatives, Charleston has no excuse not to accomplish similar victories. SKILLET MEAL (Sauted Asparagus): 1 Tbsp Georgia grown extra virgin olive oil from Lowcountry Olive Oil • 1 lb fresh asparagus, trimmed • 3-5 slices bacon, crumbled • 1 small Vidalia onion, sliced thin • 1 large clove garlic, minced • Salt & pepper to taste • Grated, crumbled or chopped Chardonnay Wash Charleston Cheesehouse cheese Heat skillet on medium and cook bacon until crisp. Discard grease and crumble bacon. Add olive oil, then asparagus and onion to skillet, salting and peppering to taste. Stir until asparagus is bright green then cover with lid until softened, from 1-3 minutes. Remove from heat, add bacon, lightly stir then garnish with cheese. 6 lily-magazine.com | HELLO SPRING 2016

MUSC’s Urban Farm Grows Health & Wellness in the heart (and hearts) of Charleston Get down to MUSC asap and discover kindred spirits with community spirit!

Our first entre into this wonderful, uber-urban farm, located right downtown on the corner of Bee and President Streets, was an elegant, lantern lit farm to table ‘do (courtesy of Commune., a supper cult dedicated to local chefs working magic with local foods). We explored the beautiful gardens, admired the new additions of more raised beds, marveled at how many features could be contained in a mere half acre and found that our table-matesslash-kindred-spirits included dedicated MUSC staff members, sharing their urban farm stories along with our repast. The mission of the MUSC Urban Farm “To build a healthier community by growing crops and social connections while educating and inspiring people with local, nutritious, and delicious food. The MUSC Urban Farm will host educational programs throughout the growing season demonstrating accessible, preventative approaches that can improve diet and impact health.”

Not only does MUSC share the farm (more like an urban ‘stead) with the community, hosting everything from workshops, school field trips, yoga and exercise, suppers and more, they also see the farm as the heart of MUSC, boasting everything from work and learn programs to sharing the farm’s bounty with MUSC personnel through rewards (called coupons for crops) for great work and using the employeegrown goodies for food/health/nutrition awareness activities an invaluable service since health workers are notorious for high stress and bad health/eating practices in their noble efforts to heal others!

The Crops The farm grows organic goodies year round with produce planted and harvested during the spring and fall growing seasons. Over 40 varieties of vegetables, fruit, and herbs grown in South Carolina can be found in there! To put the “generous” donation in perspective, Monsanto has a budget of $2.6 million per DAY for “research and development” and the state farmers suffered upwards of $300 million dollars in damage... Hmmm... wonder how much money was invested BY farmers in Monsanto products before the flood that year—think it might be a leeeetle more than $25,000? We’ll let lily readers decide for themselves whether or not to insert eye roll here.

General Mills, bee real… Congratulations General Mills for calling attention to the honey bee conundrum by taking the iconic cartoon bee off your Honey Nut Cheerios box and urging consumers to understand the importance of the honey bee colony collapse disorder due to pesticides, GMO food crops that use dangerous pesticides during the growing process and for touting the use of whole grain oats—a non genetically modified product—in your cereal.

But the thing is… you still use genetically modified sugar beets as sweetener, a whopping 9 grams of sugars per serving (vs only 1 gram in regular cheerios), and other ingredients used are sugar and corn starch—which, along with "natural” flavors and canola oil, are ingredients that are most likely derived from GMO sources. And there’s not nearly enough fiber in there anyway! How about local bread and honey with local milk instead?

Goodbye scary derelict rails and hello safe, healthy and unifying urban green spaces for everyone. So lily! “The Lowcountry Low Line stretches approximately 1.6 miles, from Courtland Avenue (two blocks north of Mount Pleasant St., or Santi's) South to Woolfe Street (or just north of there). But we at Friends of the Low Line have high hopes we'll find a way to extend it to Marion Square.”

CHARLESTON’S BOTANICAL HERITAGE Charleston was known as a garden mecca almost from its outset. Ever wonder about the street called “Orange” downtown? It was an orange grove in the late 1600’s. In the 1700’s, famous botanists from all over the world came to study Charleston’s climate, helping to establish the roots of such local classics as the Azalea and Camellia plants, imported from the far east. 1 Local handmade pasta with vodka sauce I handmade batch of Rio Bertolini’s Cracked pepper linguini 2 Tbsp Georgia grown extra virgin olive oil from Lowcountry Olive Oil 2 Tbsp butter 1 Medium Vidalia onion, chopped 2 cloves garlic, minced

1 large can Italian plum tomatoes (or 3 large tomatoes, diced, in season) 1 Tbsp fresh local herbs (we used basil and oregano) 1/2 cup local vodka (we used King Charles Vodka) 1/2 cup heavy cream, room temperature 1 pinch cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes 3 Tbsp Chardonnay Wash Charleston Artisan Cheesehouse cheese, shredded or chopped

Bring large pot of generously salted water almost to a boil and keep simmering. Do not thaw frozen pasta and do not add oil to water. Meanwhile, combine olive oil and butter in medium skillet. Saute onion 2-4 minutes then add the garlic, mix and saute another minute. Add the tomatoes, herbs, vodka and pinch of pepper. Simmer 10 minutes, then slowly

add the cream and simmer another 3-5 minutes. Drop your pasta in the simmering water pot, stir and raise heat to rapid boiling. While pasta cooks, add grated cheese to skillet and mix well. Drain pasta when cooked al dente (1-3 minutes), serve on warmed plates and top with vodka sauce and additional grated cheese.

Bruschetta with apples, cheese, spinach and nuts Slice a baguette diagonally and broil until just slightly crunchy. Remove from oven and spread with apple butter or preserves (we used apple butter with pecan). Top with baby spinach leaf, a thick slice of Chardonnay Wash Charleston Cheesehouse cheese and sprinkled chopped pecans. Broil again just until cheese is softened, only a minute or so. Delish!

And even a nearby winery! Well, Charleston does have a liquory legacy after all! As the oldest brewery in South Carolina, they've been making great beer since 1993. “We got our start during a windsurfing trip to the Columbia River Gorge. While sipping beer from a local brewery during a windsurfing break, we decided Charleston deserved more than yellow fizzy beer— they deserved a brewery to call their own.”

1. Start by applying a light weight serum to damp hair. (Justin recommends Davines Oi Beautifying oil.) Apply a couple of drops to the palms of hands and apply to the ends first, then work your way up, staying off the roots.

Buy or order cosmetic grade (non nano) natural zinc oxide and your fav small bottle of organic lotion. Add 1.5 - 2 Tablespoons of zinc to the bottle, mix/shake well. Apply as needed.

2. For volume/texture, use a lifting product like Davines Volu hair mist to roots and all over head.

3. Blow dry hair with a medium-sized, round brush, smoothing while leaving a bit of movement. For texture, use a large curling wand in different directions. 4.Spray a generous coat of Davines medium hair spray over your luscious locks. 5. Loosely pull hair into a ponytail at the nape of the neck and secure with an elastic, similar in color to your hair.

Take a small piece of hair from underneath the pony tail (about 1/4 inch in size), spray it with hair spray and wrap around the elastic band, securing ends with bobby pins, or tuck the ends into the elastic and lightly spray again with hair spray for a super sexy finish.
