Who is Lily? She is the ‘person’ we all aspire to be. Successful career, beautiful family, motivated, ethical, healthy, loving her lifestyle..On a Dime of course. Lily is our online magazine to complement our website www.lifeandstyleonadime.com. Lily has stories on Fashion (for real women) including the latest trends and how to incorporate these into your current wardrobe. Our passion for the home and creating a beautiful haven is an important part of our mission, as are our articles on family, celebrations and simple recipes. With a background in education management and teaching in the business sector, helping people with career aspirations and small business ventures

is dear to my heart. With that in mind we have 2 blogs dedicated to these fields (see below) and we will always include stories to motivate you in your life aspirations. Our philosophy on career is summed up in these words by Steve Jobs. “Your work is going to fill a large part of your life and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work, and the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking and don’t settle. As with all the matters of the heart you’ll know when you find it.” Enjoy! Priscilla

DO AS I SAY

AND AS I DO CHILDREN LEARN TO IMITATE AT A VERY YOUNG AGE. It’s how they learn to behave, care for themselves, develop new skills, and communicate with others. From their earliest moments they watch you closely and pattern their own behaviour and beliefs after yours. Your examples become permanent images, which will shape their attitudes and actions for the rest of their life.

LILY Life & Style OD

07 “TELL ME AND I FORGET, TEACH ME AND I MAY REMEMBER, INVOLVE ME AND I LEARN.” BENJAMIN FRANKLIN

It’s important to be responsible, consistent and loving with your child. This also holds true for the relationship you have with your spouse, your parents, and other family members and friends that are a part of your child’s life. Own up to mistakes when you make them, and communicate open and honestly with all family members. It’s also important to take good care of yourself. When we’re focusing on what’s best for our children it’s easy to neglect our own needs. Your child and your family are counting on you physically and emotionally, so it’s imperative that you teach your child by example that taking care of yourself helps you to take care of them and the rest of your family. This shows your children that not only do you love them and the rest of the family, but you love yourself as well. This is an important step in teaching your child about self esteem. This may involve getting a sitter and treating yourself out to dinner and a movie, or doing another favourite activity on your own. This teaches your children that you are not only their parent, but your own person with your interests and needs, and also gives them a chance to show you how well they can do without you with them for a while. It’s also important to nurture your relationship with your spouse. Let your child see you communicate in a positive

and healthy manner with one another, and show love and affection for one another so your child can begin to learn early on what a healthy marriage should be like. You’ll soon see your child patterning many of his behaviours after your own. So make sure that what you say and do around your child will help build a strong sense of security and self esteem. As Autumn (Fall) and Winter approach the Southern Hemisphere, we Australians are starting to think about breaking out the layers, boots and cardi’s once again and our thoughts turn to the Autumn-Winter Fashion trends. Following the fashion trends does not have to be about slavishly scouring the internet and retail outlets for the very latest collections from trend setting designers. What it can mean is a chance to explore new shapes, fabrics, styles and accessories that you might not have tried before,

sometimes it can mean discovering a new colour or shape that is perfect for you and suits your skin tone and body shape. Pick items from various seasons collections to create your own Autumn/Winter look. Each new seasons collections bring with them a chance to add some fun to your wardrobe, or maybe a touch of sophistication, or even some much needed comfort. Fashion can be a great motivator, it can make you feel good, feel refreshed and can help boost your confidence.

4 Ways To Save Money On Organic Although many of us would like to consume more organic food, whether for environmental or health reasons, unfortunately the cost can put people off. Although organic food can be more expensive than traditionally produced food, there are some simple ways to save money on your organic food shopping.

Tip 1. Shop At Farmers’ Markets If you’ve never visited a local farmers’ market before then you may be surprised at what they have to offer. Simple markets are great for picking up fruit and veg - just make sure to ask them about their farming methods and whether they are organic. There are many ways to save money on organic food shopping if you take the time to change your habits and learn a bit more about where organic food comes from. Every little effort you make will make a difference to the environment.

GROW YOUR OWN

G

one are the days of veggie patches being the domain of the industrious immigrant and the elderly. Veggie patches are the new garden norm.

Tip 2. Eat Food in Season This is extremely important if you want to be eco-friendly, as it means you can get fresh food that hasn’t had to be transported for miles overseas. It also makes your organic food shopping cheaper, and it tastes great, too!

FARMERS MARKETS ake a veggie patch with the kids and every evenng they can help you harvest the food for dinner. A great way to instill important values in your children.

M

pending a Saturday or Sunday morning strolling the local farmers markets is the perfect family outing or can be a romantic date.

S

et the kids involved in picking special ingredients for a Saturday night family meal. It’s a beautiful new tradition.

G

LILY Life & Style OD

Tip 3. Prioritise To do the best you can for your family, why not limit your organic buying to those products that are known to absorb the most chemicals? Environmental Watch Dogs and groups publish information like The Environmental Working Group’s Shoppers Guide to Pesticides detailing foods of concern containing high levels of contaminates like pesticides. So why not try to introduce organic produce known to have the highest levels of chemicals in traditional store bought varieties.

If you want to know which foods are most resistant to the absorption of chemicals, meaning if you want to still buy non-organic versions, these are: Onions Sweetcorn Mangos Avocados Pineapples Asparagus Kiwis Cabbage Bananas Papayas Broccoli

059

Here are a few of the most important fruits and vegetables to include in your organic food shopping: Peaches Apples Celery Sweet peppers Pears Strawberries Nectarines Cherries Spinach Potatoes Grapes Lettuce Cucumber Blueberries Leafy Greens Kale

Tip 4. Grow Your Own If you have the space, then growing your own organic food is the best way to stay green and healthy. You can save a huge amount of money on your organic food shopping! You have complete control over what you grow, and what you use to grow it, and you’ll save energy on driving to the store, as well as reducing food miles that also contribute towards your carbon footprint. Even if you don’t have a back garden with space to grow your own, you could grow a limited amount of organic food yourself, such as salad and herbs inside.

10 WAYS TO

START TAKING CONTROL Practicing positive thinking allows us to focus on our strengths and accomplishments, which increases happiness and motivation. This, in turn, allows us to spend more time making progress, and less time feeling down and stuck. Try these practical ways that you can shift into more positive thinking patterns.

#1 Look for the Proof instead of making Assumptions A fear of not being liked or accepted sometimes leads us to assume that we know what others are thinking, but our fears are usually not reality. If you have a fear that a friend or family member’s bad mood is due to something you did, or that your co-workers are secretly gossiping about you when you turn your back, speak up and ask them. Don’t waste time worrying that you did something wrong unless you have proof that there is something to worry about.

#2 Remind Yourself of the things you are grateful for. Stresses and challenges don’t seem quite as bad when you are constantly reminding yourself of the things that are right in life. Taking just 60 seconds a day to stop and appreciate the good things will make a huge difference.

TRY THESE TIPS... #3 Detatch Negative thoughts Your thoughts can’t hold any power over you if you don’t let them. If you notice yourself having a negative thought, detach from it, witness it, and don’t follow it.

#7 Practice Lovin’, Touchin’ & Squeezin’ (Your Friends and Family) You don’t have to be an expert to know the benefits of a good hug. Positive physical contact with friends, loved ones, and even pets, is an instant pick-me-up. One research study on this subject had a waitress touch some of her customers on the arm as she handed them their checks. She received higher tips from these customers than from the ones she didn’t touch!

#4 Take Good Care of Yourself

#5 Increase Your Social Activity

It’s much easier to be positive when you are eating well, exercising, and getting enough rest.

By increasing social activity, you decrease loneliness. Surround yourself with healthy, happy people, and their positive energy will affect you in a positive way!

Everyone feels good after helping. You can volunteer your time, your money, or your resources. The more positive energy you put out into the world, the more you will receive in return.

#8 Squash the “ANTs”

#9 Refrain from using Absolutes

In his book “Change Your Brain, Change Your Life,” Dr. Daniel Amen talks about “ANTs” - Automatic Negative Thoughts. These are the bad thoughts that are usually reactionary, like “Those people are laughing, they must be talking about me,” or “The boss wants to see me? It must be bad!” When you notice these thoughts, realise that they are nothing more than ANTs and squash them!

Have you ever told a partner “You’re ALWAYS late!” or complained to a friend “You NEVER call me!”? Thinking and speaking in absolutes like ‘always’ and ‘never’ makes the situation seem worse than it is, and programs your brain into believing that certain people are incapable of delivering.

#10 Use Pattern Interrupts to combat Over thinking

#6 Volunteer or Help Someone

If you find yourself ruminating, a great way to stop it is to interrupt the pattern and force yourself to do something completely different. Rumination is like hyperfocus on something negative. It’s never productive, because it’s not rational or solution-oriented, it’s just excessive worry. Try changing your physical environment - go for a walk or sit outside. You could also call a friend, pick up a book, or turn on some music.

Sometimes it takes a bit of courage to admit and confront our negative thinking habits, but when you do, you will reap the benefits ...and your friends, family and colleagues will be grateful too.

BUSINESS SUCCESS

THROUGH PLANNING BLOG: www.coach4smallbusiness.blogspot.com

IF YOU ARE A BUSINESS OWNER, OR ARE CONTEMPLATING STARTING YOUR OWN BUSINESS, IF YOU DON’T HAVE A STRATEGIC PLAN, YOU ARE DESTINED TO FAIL. The creation of a efficient and effective business plan can mean the difference between having the need to work 70+ hours a week all year long – only to find out that your business is only just breaking even, or even worse, losing money... On the other end of the scale, many successful business owners and entrepreneurs who have created and implemented a business strategy generally work for less hours, and produce a more sizeable income and profit margins. You will also find, that in general, those who are successful with their own business, attribute their success to having a strategic plan.

business to have? 2) Any operating business should have clear and concise company values and guiding principles. For instance, what are the reasons you are in business? Serve and protect? Provide quality soap? And how do you do business? Do you treat your customers like trash; or another form of royalty?

Ok, we’ve discussed that having a good business strategy plan is essential, but what really is “ ‘strategic business management’? In its most basic form, its the process in which the goals and objectives for your business are defined, and an action plan is then created so you may reach your goals and objectives.

3) It would also be a good idea to create a 3 year and 5 year plan. Any business should implement a long-term plan in which the basis is on broad objectives that will assist you in getting your business from where it is today, to where you want your business to be.

You now know what it is. So how do you go about creating a strategic plan for your business? 1) Any business owner should know, and be able to describe in detail, the vision for his or her business. What’s the image that you want your

4) When setting and planning your annual goals, is pays to be “SMART”. Make sure your planning incorporates the following points: 1. Be very specific 2. Show measure

HAVING A SAFE TRIP IS JUST AS IMPORTANT AS REACHING YOUR FINAL DESTINATION.

3. Make the goals realistic and attainable 4. Make sure they are time-oriented Include a list of obstacles and barriers which could halter your success from achieving your goals. In any case, getting to where you want your business to be, you’ll need resources. Create and define a list of resources you’ve already got, and the other resources which you will need to achieve your goals. At this point, you should also create a concise action plan that clearly defines how you will actually achieve the necessary goals. If your business has any employees, it is of great importance to involve them with this part of the business planning process. 5) In your business plan, you should create simple and concise milestones or benchmarks, that will define when you have actually reached a goal or objective. This is an essential part of the planning, as it will enable you to measure your progress as a business.

do so, everyone requires the same map. 7) It’s no use having a well thought-out and planned strategic business plan, if you don’t put it into action. You now have a means to begin your business journey; it’s time to start it. Be sure to regularly check and compare the progress of your business, to the benchmarks defined in your business plan. If something should go wrong with your business, the sooner you figure out what went wrong, or what is happening, the sooner you can fix the problem, make the necessary adjustments and get your business back on track. 9) And finally, ensure that each year you follow the exact same cycle to create your strategic business plan. Dream, Plan, Act, Check. That’s all there is to it. As a final comment, I’ll leave you with this. Creating a business strategy and ensuring that you follow it, is not just about achieving specific goals and objectives. Its purpose is to also make sure that the journey taken to these goals, is a safe and enjoyable journey.

6) After you have created your strategic business plan, it is of paramount importance that it is shared with anyone who will be involved in the process. Your annual business plan is the roadmap which will lead your business and those involved to the goals which need to be achieved — but to be Having a safe trip is just as important as reaching effective, everyone must end up at the same goals your final destination. and objectives, the ‘destination’, if you will. Tuscany! Where else would you expect to find a

schiacciata (flat bread) studded with wine grapes.

Preheat the oven to 220 Deg C. Cooking time 15-20 minutes then reduce temp to 180 Deg C. For 10 min. (Note: Due to rising time allow several hours to prepare.)

Cover the bowl with cling wrap and leave in a warm place (not in the sun) for 1 hour or until it has doubled in size.

Warm oil on a low heat with the chopped rosemary for 5 minutes then set aside to cool.

Divide it into 2 and put each piece on an oiled tray (a small pizza tray works well). Spread them out until about 1 ½ cm thick.

Push the remaining grapes into the dough then brush the surface with the rosemary oil and sprinkle with the remaining sugar.

In a large bowl combine the flour and salt. Make a well and add yeast mixture and half of the rosemary infused oil.

Leave in a warm spot to rise for 20 minutes.

Add 300g of grapes to the mixture and mix well then on a well floured bench knead the dough for about 5 minutes. Put dough in a clean bowl and lightly brush with the rosemary oil.

Place trays in the oven cook for 15-20 minutes then reduce temp to 180 Deg C. For 5-10 min.

Image: To Tuscany

A slightly sweet bread with flavours of rosemary and black grapes. This beautiful Tuscan bread is great to serve the family or visitors for a snack. It’s great for a summer day or a chilly winter snack by the fire.

Remove from oven and serve whole on the tray or platter cut into strips.

10 WAYS TO EMPOWER YOUR COMMUNICATION “A PIECE OF BLARNEY STONE” BLOG: www.theenhancedme.blogpot.com

THE BLARNEY STONE IS A HISTORICAL STONE, OR ACTUALLY PART OF THE BLARNEY CASTLE IN IRELAND WHERE IT WAS BELIEVED THAT KISSING THE STONE CAN GRANT YOU THE GIFT OF GAB. There is so much to know about conversation. You can learn through watching talk shows; radio programs; clubs dedicated to public speaking; training courses and ordinary conversations. Through all of these you will discover that certain rules still apply when it comes to interaction through words. It may sound tedious, I know, but even though it’s your mouth that’s doing the work, your brain works twice as hard to churn out a lot of things you know. So what better way to start learning to be an effective communicator than to know the person closest to you...YOU.

1. What you know. Education is all about learning the basics, but to be an effective conservationist is to practice what you’ve learned. Build your confidence in speaking through practice. Get involved in activities you enjoy that require you to interact. There is nothing wrong with understanding your limitations, but that doesn’t mean we can’t learn to keep up.

2. Listening. It’s just as important as asking questions. Sometimes listening to others AND our own voice can teach us to be confident with ourselves and to say the things we believe in with conviction.

3. Humility We all make mistakes, and sometimes mispronounce certain words even though we know what it means, but rarely use it. So in a group, don’t be afraid to ask if you’re saying the right word properly and if they’re unsure about it then make a joke out of it. I promise you it’ll make everyone laugh and you will get away with it as well.

4. Eye Contact Directing your attention to your audience with an eye-catching gaze is sometimes difficult but can mean the difference between clear communication or not. It’s important that you keep your focus when talking to a large social group or in a meeting.

MORE TIPS? Visit our self development blog www.theenhanced me.blogspot.com

5. Kidding around

10. Preparation

A little bit of humour can do wonders to lift the tension, or worse boredom when communicating. That way, you’ll get the attention of the majority of the crowd and they’ll feel that you’re just as approachable, and as human to those who listen.

6. Interacting

If you are about to attend a function and are nervous about the impending conversations. It’s not silly to prepare. Take a few minutes to make some notes about current issues, hobbies and events in your life. The simple act of writing them down will remind you that you have plenty to contribute.

Interaction is all about mingling with other people. You’ll get a lot of ideas on how to develop better communication through regular interaction.

It is important to remember communication is a learnt skill, so keep learning and keep practicing.

7. Me, Myself, and I Admit it, there are times you sing to yourself in the shower. I know I do! Why not practice conversation as well. Listening to the sound of your own voice while you practice can help build your confidence ...and while you’re at it you can spruce up as well.

8. With a smile A smile says it all much like eye contact. There’s no point on grimacing or frowning in a meeting or a gathering, unless it’s a wake. You can better express what you’re saying when you smile.

9. A Role Model There must be at least one or two people in your life you have listened to confidently speaking when they’re at a public gathering . Take a mental note of how they emphasise what they say.

WANT TO GROW YOUR BUSINESS IDEA? 7 Rules Of Growth For Small Business BLOG: www.coach4smallbusiness.blogspot.com There are no silver bullets or 10 point checklists that will lead to guaranteed growth. There are, however, seven specific areas in which growth companies concentrate their efforts.

1. Strong sense of purpose. Most leaders of companies that have achieved growth discover that it takes more than the promise of increasing financial reward to fuel their aspirations and ambitions. They find a higher calling than simply the pursuit of “more money.

2. Outstanding market intelligence. This is an organisation’s ability to first recognise, then adapt, to fundamental changes in the marketplace. Many times, small-business owners become too myopic, seeing only a limited view of the markets in

which they compete. Growth leaders see the bigger picture.

3. Effective growth planning. This is the best predictor of whether or not a business will grow. To be effective, a plan for growth does not need to be overly formal or complicated. However, it does need to be written, well-communicated and regularly updated.

4. Customer-driven processes. These days, every company I talk to believes it is

093

MORE TIPS? Visit our ‘On a Dime’ page at www. lifeandstyleonadime .com

customer-driven, when actually very few really are. Take a look at all of the business processes from a customer’s perspective. Are they in place to make it easier for the company, or to help deliver on the promise of faster, cheaper and better service for the customer?

5. The power of technology. Successful leaders don’t let the boom and bust of technology cycles give them the excuse to ignore that we live in an information age. If a company is in business, it is in the technology business.

6. The best and brightest people. Growth leaders recognise that they are only as good as the people with whom they work. The ability to hire, train and retain the best and the brightest people is often the difference between success and failure.

7. Seeing the future. Few organisations take the time to regularly consider the future. Growth leaders learn how to diligently monitor and interpret the macro forces of change affecting the world in which they live.

“IF YOU DO NOT CHANGE DIRECTION, YOU MAY END UP WHERE YOU ARE HEADING.” LAO TZU
