Pendants don’t always have to be the centre of attention!

Top Tip A MODERN TWIST ON THE BEDSIDE TABLE LAMP The basic pendant can be a wonderful centre piece in any room adding central general light but it can also be used more as an accent or task lamp, usually over a kitchen table or island but here a pair of matching pendants are used as simple bedside lamps giving a contemporary look to this boutique bedroom. Why not give it a try in your room?

The Light TOP TIP

Hang your pendant around 80cm to 1m from the height of your bed / bedside table for the most useful light. Add a smart bulb with remote control for total control.

Think like a designer

Ceramics, in all of their various forms, have been around for many years; their uses ranged from utilitar items including pots and jars through to less functional forms of decorative art. The ceramics are reported to be prehistoric and eac culture had their own styling.

Ceramic Lamps hav evolved from humb beginnings to emer priceless art. Initially, ceramic jar used as packaging t transport foods and liquids, yet many years later, we experienced the same material metamorphosed into what we now consider a classic style for decorative table lamps.

Pottery is often handcrafted clay and slip, which c be formed into many shapes and then fired to reta that shape. Ceramics is a general term for stonew earthenware, porcelain mixtures all with their own unique properties but they are all shaped and fire create a biscuit blank finish. Although they can be at this stage, more often they are glazed and can b decorated with scraped surface detailing or painte Many ceramic objects are still made this way but historical ceramics, rarities and hand printed herit brands can be highly collectable.

Today we still crave and use ceramics; whilst tech has replaced a whole host of traditional skills, arti pottery is generally crafted in much the same way the same techniques as it has for thousands of ye ensures that the pottery has that handcrafted exc that makes each piece unique.

We love the traditional shape of these lamps, a tru timeless classic for any home. There’s a couple of classic shapes, namely the ‘Amphora’ and ‘Ginger shapes which really do add a statement to any ho highly decorative and useful too. These are the lam bases that were modelled on early food storage ve

AMPHORA SHAPED LAMPS What is an Amphora? It’s an ancient Roman jar for carrying and transporting liquids. These were designed to hold lots of liquid and therefore had thin walls to maximise the space inside. The unique shape meant they were easy to store on ships and were sometimes referred to as a Grecian Urn Lamp, but no matter what we call it, it is very attractive and when teamed with a shade, it makes an iconic shape for a table lamp. This blue replica Amphora Lamp is actually manufactured in metal with an authentic painted finish befitting of a beautiful glaze effect.

GINGER JAR SHAPED LAMPS Ginger jars were used to carry food, predominantly ginger in fact! There was a huge demand for Chinese imports during the Victorian era who craved the exotic, be it in taste, a curio or object, so items originating from the orient was something to behold. Ginger jars were made in high volumes to satisfy the demands of the western world, obsessed by the mystical orient.

The decoration of the lamps and pots is where the true artistry is. The iconic potteries all developed their own unique trademark style, be it the techniques or the finish used in the decoration. Lamps that are hand painted are considered to be the most highly regarded, as they can be just as intricate and captivating as famous paintings. This decoration has become part of a great many British famous heritage brands. Undeniably all have personality and quality which makes British pottery world renowned. Most potters will have their own style, look and technique however, there are some subjects which are perfectly right for lamps. Many artists have been drawn to the subject, no I’m not talking about nudes! A little more romanticism, it’s actually flowers. Floral emblems are lovely, along with Botanical representations are very sought after. Ceramic lamps add a touch of class, and should really be considered in any lounge, hotel reception or formal drawing room, evoking a luxurious yet unpretentious, homely style. If you are having a lamp, why not invest in a beautiful classic ceramic lamp that has a timeless design? These lamps help to bring a cheerful bright freshness to a room by day, and rooms are transformed by atmospheric light by night. Indeed, all lamps, whether modern or traditional bring a warm cosy ambience to a room, however ceramic lamps bring something more; akin to a small exclusive art exhibition in your very own room.

I Whoever first thought to unite a ceramic high lustre pottery with electric light deserves to be applauded, a true revelation! Much as curators would light a Van Gogh in a gallery, or the way illuminated Crown Jewels sparkle in cases at the tower of London, objects are always enhanced tenfold when lit well.

e are all searching for a way to stand out from the crowd, making our brand memorable to help create a unique experience for our customers which will separate us from the run-of-the-mill. For any bar, restaurant, café and hotel, the interior design is critical to the customers experience and ultimate evaluation of the offering. How many times have you visited somewhere that has nearly got it all, having paid attention to the food and drink served, has good attentive staff yet is let down by well an undervalued space? It can happen all too easily, perhaps because it has failed to update the space or simply is tied to a “consistent” corporate look that fails to impact unique personality in the room. If the interior design is under whelming, it will undoubtedly have a similar effect on the atmosphere. Designing your space is a balancing act which starts from recognising the demographics to which you are targeting your brand. Making the room feel special enough to create a ‘wow’, a striking effect that will remain in your client’s minds for all the right reasons, but also making it homely enough so that they feel comfortable and relaxed can be a significant challenge. Lighting of course is a vital part of that puzzle. Regardless of what natural light comes in to the space, the UK has the longest working hours in the whole of Europe, so the need to be able to offer our services to our clients outside of these times is vital. Lighting will instantly add to the cosy ambience and can be used to highlight architectural interest points, or artwork within the room which will draw the eye and create familiarity. Unquestionably, the design of the lighting can also add to the feeling of the setting, enhancing the age and style of the room with ease. Our Bespoke Lights division can help you to source a range of lighting that will work harmoniously with your creative ideas, along with complimenting the interior design of your building and decor whilst adding character and enhancing the surroundings for the ultimate experience that brings customers back time and again.

We love the concept of these bespoke made armchairs by designer Rhubarb of London. Staging your room with pieces of interest will instantly guide your visitors to grasp the main concept of the design, offering something comforting and embracing them the minute they set foot in the door. Consider elevating your interior with a unique quirky piece, be it furniture, a piece of art or sculpture, or decorative floor lamps that are indicative of your design to put your patrons instantly at ease. Wardown House, Museum & Gallery

From concept . . . . . . . . . . . . . . to creation

Originally designed in 1872 as a private residence for local solicitor, Frank Scargill, the house was later bought by two local councillors in 1903 who proceeded to open up the grounds as a public park. As part of its long-standing history, the house was used as a military hospital during the First World War before becoming a museum in 1931. The renovation project saw new areas of the building being opened up, the ground floor was improved and furnished which helped to give visitors an insight into this wealthy family home during the Victorian period. Rooms included were the Billiard Room, Smoking Room, Library and kitchen, which also help to tell the story of Luton’s transformation to the exciting and diverse town it is today. Volunteer Museum Makers will work with staff to create costumed tours, talks and special events to bring the story to life. Our Bespoke Lights division was selected to supply the lighting for the project for the range of authentic reproduction period lighting to fit sympathetically with the historic features of the building. Lighting with a historical feel but with all the reassurance of modern electrical safety standards. The lights used exude the quality and craftsmanship synonymous with the original versions from the era, which has enhanced the premium finish of the resulting design with convincing authenticity. Visitors are welcomed to come and experience the pleasing result and can anticipate seeing collections from the Luton New Archive, the hat industry, regional straw work, some natural history and the Luton Voices Archive to name a few. The displays will chart the development of Luton and celebrate its diverse communities.

In addition, a brand-new café was created with access to the park. The Morning Room became a new art gallery, which can be hired and would make a perfect venue for weddings and exhibitions. Extensive work is underway which will ensure that the building is fully accessible. The redevelopment ensures the building’s standing as a key part of community life and is a fantastic attraction for visitors of all ages. Keeping the architectural ancestry along with providing a glimpse into the lives of the past eras will ensure the house can be enjoyed for many years to come, helping to inspire future generations to take an active interest in Luton’s heritage.

The resulting effect is luxurious, polished and glamorous. To accessorise the collection, they have chosen to contrast with smooth clear and coloured glass. Glass is a perfect choice of accessory not only for this eye-catching design, but for so many others. The soft sheen can calm a busy interior as easily as it can add a touch of sparkle to a neutral room.

Glass is available in a number of finishes and is fantastic at helping to maintain the integrity of all designs. It’s therefore a choice which should not be overlooked – due to the transparent nature and delicate colourings that it comes in, it offers a seamless accent to all rooms. When it comes to lighting, we are spoilt for choice with a wide selection of styles, shapes and colours available. Whilst offering a timeless and sophisticated accent to your room, it is also an ideal material to use in busy homes and hospitality settings alike as they are easy to clean and maintain.

They also offer an unrivalled differing look when they are on or off, making a great choice for changing the ambience of a room from daytime to cosy evening with the flick of a switch. For even more control, you can consider teaming many glass lights with dimmable bulbs and a dimmer switch for unrivalled atmospheric possibilities. Many of the lights we feature here, are still made using the time honoured traditional mouth blowing technique, which allows for the beauty of individuality within the texture of the glass which turns the light into a unique piece of art. The light is able to shine uninterrupted through smooth, clear finished glass, so it is worth considering the bulbs that you are using, perhaps a decorative, gold tinted filament LED bulb will add a soft glow for you to appreciate the quality of your light. Dimpled glass is also extremely popular, and the technique adds a lustrous texture which reflects natural light beautifully when the light is off. When in use, the dimples will act to gently diffuse some of the glare from your light which works perfectly as part of the main lighting in the room. Fluted glass creates a decadent sparkle and offers a similar level of glare reduction for your light, whilst offering a classical elegance to your light. For the most effective glare reducing texture, you could consider a prismatic glass, which looks fantastic with some of the more traditional and industrial designed lights.

Modern Galley

A standard galley kitchen can often be a challenging room to work with as they can be small areas and can very easily look cluttered. You could consider taking a wall down and stretching the galley kitchen into an adjoining room, perfect to utilise as a dining space, creating the sought-after kitchen diner. Alternatively, you could choose to separate the areas with an extended work top or island, creating a great multi-use breakfast bar style area. Smaller houses can still have a wonderful, spacious feeling, it just takes a bit of vision and creativity. Multifunctional rooms are ideal, as you will be able to maximise the amount you can use the rooms. Somewhere to sit in a kitchen, even a small one, will be a great place to grab a coffee or quick meal, as well as somewhere to do homework or catch up on the bills, or even just to sit and prepare the Sunday roast!

INTERIOR INSPIRATION: Loving Angles Instead

Adjusting to the circumstances

We this

Clever lighting plans will often ensure that you always have light where and when it is required, however there are some areas where you just need a bit of extra light, or the ability to angle the light to help you see the level of detail that you need. One such range that offers us more versatility than many others whilst maintaining an effortless style, is the Provence range. Inspired from traditional lighting used in Parisian cafés, they exude a vintage charm that will enliven most settings.

Top Tips

The single an be used as either a ceiling pendant or a wall light. The arm features three separate points of adjustment, one at the base of the shade, one halfway down the suspension arm and another on the ceiling cup/wall bracket. This offers a whole host of possibilities and is therefore an ideal solution to a wide range of tricky lighting issues.

These adjustable lamps can be a perfect solution to some of your “mission impossible” places where you need light. Use one of these where there is no room or surface to position a table lamp or where you have a low sloping ceiling such as a loft extension room and no other light will fit!

They are available in a wide range of finishes to compliment all decors. The old bronze finish is perfect in rustic and traditional settings and the shade inner has been kept as a light antiqued finish to allow for a contrast in the light and to maximise the illumination from your bulb.

The aged brass looks fantastic in traditional and vintage settings and it offers a warm accent, echoing the material that would have been prevalent around the time of the original designs of this style of light.

The polished nickel finish offers a cool, sophisticated edge to a more modern or industrial chic setting. The copper version will sit perfectly in many settings, especially if there are coordinating copper accents present in the design. So, if you’re looking for a light for a particular circumstance and have an eye for superior design, make way for some French chic in your room! Also included in the range, are rise and fall ceiling pendants great for kitchens, a standard ceiling pendant, a wall light and two designs of table. Yet ‘la pièce de résistance’ is the Provence Grande a multiple light adjustable ceiling light.

Ahead of the Curve

a re

However, over the last few years, technological developments in LED’s improving the output, colour temperature and stability, which along with a reduction in the manufacturing costs, has finally seen them become a viable and logical option for mainstream lighting design.

This has seen a revolution in modern lighting design as the reduced space required to house these miniscule LED lighting units, means that the possibilities are now almost endless for modern lighting designers. Whilst a route to the power source and wiring always needs to be available, much more fluid design is now possible. Where design was mostly conical and linear, a more creative design has now emerged with a more curvy appeal.

What is so great about curves? The elegant, softly flowing lines are reminiscent of natural harmony, whilst creating a focal, energising impact. They are simply suited to every emotion and style. Our interiors tend to have so many straight lines such as walls, stairs, tables, shelves and windows. To avoid feeling boxed in, your space really benefits to be broken up with the flow and softness of curves. You can add your curves with your soft furnishings, but for real impact don’t forget your lighting. Regardless if it is with a statement ceiling fitting or a carefully placed floor or table lamp, a curved design light fitting can be so much more than just a light source!

Dare to be different? Even if you have a traditional property, a splash of modern styling can bring something different to a room. Be brave and go with the flow! Lighting is a vital part of the interior design. All lights will provide you with illumination, but by choosing sculptural, artistic lighting that compliments your room adds a vital design feature without the need to clutter up the room with non-essential ornaments.

You’ll get two for the price of one too; stunning artwork that illuminates your room! Lighting does not need to match, in fact variations on a theme can make a room really interesting. Choose to stick to the same design in an alternative colour or choose a different design in a matching colour can add wonderful interest to your room.

The Light

Lighting design has traditionally been constrained by the shape and size of light bulbs. Over the last decade, we have seen progress made with more intricate lighting design, largely thanks to small halogen capsule bulbs that needed less space than their incandescent predecessors.

Bathrooms in various guises, have been around for centuries. They date back to around 3000 BC and were used to cleanse the spirit and body before entering a place of worship. The rise of public baths peaked with the Roman Empire, who positioned impressive and lavish buildings around natural hot springs. Nowadays, bathrooms are a much more personal space yet we can still crave the benefits of a long, hot soak in the bath, or a steaming shower after a hectic day. Modern bathrooms offer us clean lines, calm and uncomplicated surfaces which offer exceptional hygiene and bounce light around the room. Did you know that we all spend on average, a year and a half of our lives in our bathrooms?

As a general rule of thumb, we would recommend at least one ceiling light that is placed centrally to allow light into all areas of the bathroom. A mirror is a must in a bathroom and we would recommend having a light above this as not only will it allow a clear view of the face for shaving or applying makeup, but it will bounce light back into the room. Wall lights are great at adding ambient light where it is needed. Adding these on a separate switch will allow you to control the ambience easily – just selecting the wall lights will be perfect for your long, luxurious soak. If you want to go the extra mile, you could consider using them with dimmable bulbs and dimmer switches. It is also worth considering the glare that you get from your light – whilst we need the bathroom to be bright, we don’t want any blinding spots that make us squint! Frosted or opal glass, or a white acrylic will help to ensure that this doesn’t happen. Another way to achieve a stunning effect is to match the finish of your taps to your lighting, along with any storage handles you may have. This really finishes off the cohesive effect. So, grab your bubbles and start running the bath whilst you plan your new bathroom lighting! (unsure if it’s Prosecco, bubble bath, or both? I’ll opt for both!
