Avant Garden

Way back in time everyone had house plants at home and it seems we’ve all caught on to the benefits they bring. So much so, that plants in light filled rooms has become a new trend. Rather than having a plant plonked down in the center of a table, the introduction of plants has become rather more Avant Garde!

The Light

The Lighting Company invites you to get amazed by your interiors! We have some ideas on how to style your home with plenty of light and lusciousness! Expect to see foliage appear in wallpapers, cushions and lamp bases.

B

We are excited to present here, an interior design scheme you are sure to love; we certainly do! A curation of your very own “Avant Garden” (we love a little word play). The French word Avant-Garde neatly describes all that is fresh and new, experimental ideas, progressive and pioneering style with splashes of bohemia and eccentricity. Avant Garden is an interior trend which you can have fun with, curating the look of outside in with added elements of quirkiness and natural form lighting which will mirror a vast selection of plants, beautifully shaped leaves and inspire feelings of being in a forest or rainforest, whichever inspires your imagination the most!?

We like to see it as a quirkier and bolder take on the simpler Scandinavian style. This style lends itself to a pinch of surrealism with adventurous, exotic prints, fresh fruits and colours emulative of the bright pigments of the rainforest. You can go with colours you love either full on, or decorative colour pops of accessories. Think lighting with wooden accents and flow-forms which complement nature’s patterns. Light is important here, without lighting, your rich, tropical jungle will not look as lush; plants need light to thrive - as do we! As the evening sets in, lighting will illuminate the beautiful patterns of plants, create a dazzling display of light and shadow and accentuate the tropical colour accents of your interiors.

Green colours will give you a sense of tranquility, calmness and vitality. Why not introduce the underground colour trend, a mix of aubergines and avocado’s? Green colours are often used in television studios to help relax people for this reason.

What is iridescent? The palest pastel hints of luminous colour which seems to alter pigment when you look at it from a different angle. The finish is like the surface of a soap bubble, the shimmering colours of fish scales, the delicate sheen from mother of pearl. It’s everything magical beautiful and dreamlike you imagine… it’s sure to have us gazing upwardly like the awe-inspired children we once were. Highly lustrous shimmering wispy pale watery colours, not one colour but every beautiful colour in the rainbow, working in harmony to portray a transparency like vapour as if the dream like jewel effect could ‘pop’ and be lost forever.

The Light

B

The visual appeal of iridescent when the light is off adds a whole heap in the glamour stakes as often, your main lights are off during the day, which amounts to about 50% of the time; but, oh my! when the light is switched on double bubble!

Sometimes known as petrol glass, more often dichroic, the iridescent lights look great in every room, especially in a room that has lots of windows, as the natural light will shine through and paint rainbows everywhere!

We’d suggest teaming your Lights on, or lights off, it’s excellent iridescent light with vintage style value, a light fitting that looks filament bulbs - it really is beyond amazing all the time. describing how fantastic these lights are! This is a bold statement, but they rival the beauty of a dragonfly’s wings surrounding a firefly.

Issue 14

Lights that use the iridescent glass look spectacular even when switched off, as they have the ability to pick up of the smallest amount of light around them, refracting and reflecting the light. This brings life, movement and endless enjoyment to the observer.

A glimpse into the hidden beauty of lighting between the lines… If you’re reading this article, you obviously have a keen interest in interior design, as do we. You’ll therefore know that coming up with a concept or interpretation of a design that’s worthy of your home can come down to the wire.

A

Whilst we interpret the ever changing trends and fashions, our interest is to help you to make an investment in your lighting that stands the test of time and works with a variety of styles so you can make little, light touches to your home without the need to change your carefully chosen lights.

One such style of light is caged style lights, open sided wireframes and slatted glimpses to the hidden beauty of the light. So why are open sided lights perfect to work with any look? When you have taken the time to lovingly create your interior design, you naturally see each and every centimetre. From the areas that went well, to the bits that required a few more attempts and every section in between, you will appreciate it as it’s your vision. So why cover it all up? It’s true that lighting is the jewel in the crown in most designs, but you can also let the illumination itself be the shining light that completes the look in your room.

The Light

B

Having open sided lights allows an unobstructed view to the setting behind, whilst providing a playful juxtaposition which acts to add intrigue to the overall look.

2019

If you start your own line up, you will really invigorate your space. These lights invite an openness, a friendliness which naturally sees them looking spectacular in pairs, groups or clusters.

They also compliment many settings, from the vintage, retro and industrial, to the more modern and contemporary settings. So, draw a line in the sand and opt for a linear motif light in your home!

Issue 14

They also play a huge part in open plan spaces, creating a zoning effect that still allows a glimpse through to the windows and light as well as other functional spaces.

We love this style of lights when teamed with a decorative filament LED bulb. The tantalising effect of the warm embers, filtering through the open sides is truly a wonder to behold, like a flickering cozy fire on a cold winters’ day.

Issue 14

A new breed of lighting begins! Ultra-modern LED technology has vastly broadened the variety of lighting available and for the first time, lights are recognised as more than simply a light source. Now, more than ever, they are eye-catching structures where often the light source and aforementioned structure are inextricably one.

We understand that lighting is an investment, the crowning glory of our interior designs and as such, we realise that a key consideration when choosing your lights, is how long they will last for; understandably, as we all want value for money! The last thing we’d want is to find our perfect light only for the brightness to be extinguished within a few years. Fortunately, LEDs deliver unapparelled longevity compared to their antiquated counterparts and will generally last between 15 and 25 years with average use. And being honest, who really wants the same light fitting for in excess of a quarter of a century?

Often, understanding how much light you get from a light fitting can be difficult with LED. All LED’s are not created equal. You’ve no doubt you’ve heard the phrase “you get what you pay for” and it’s never so true as when in the context of LED’s.

Wattages used to be the measure of light as well as being the amount of energy used, however as LED give much more light whilst using much smaller amounts of electricity or wattage, we no longer use watts as a light measurement.

Here at the Lighting Company we celebrate 200 years since the birthday of Queen Victoria. We will look at how the “Gaslight Era” was a momentous time for British lighting, with gas lighting for homes and streets becoming mainstream. This, along with the invention of Edison’s lightbulb helped people to work longer and it could be said that light increased the productivity of the industrial revolution.

The Victorian era saw the introduction of the first street lights, although they were sometimes miles apart. Charles Dickens writing captures what was literally quite a dark time; “Bleak dark and piercing cold it was a night for the well housed and fed to draw round the bright fire….” Oliver Twist. Victorians venerated the pineapple as a symbol of wealth and hospitality, so incorporated pineapple motifs across architecture, art and design. We can see the pineapples in today’s lighting designs; once you notice them you will start to see them everywhere.
