Make Light Work of it Lighting the perfect vision for your home office… Top tips to making your home office, light, bright and comfortable to welcome you to an enjoyable working day… If you’re one of the 13.7 percent of the UK workforce that works from home, you will know all about the challenges that setting up a designated work space in the home can bring. We’ve got some top tips about how to get comfortable for maximising efficiency when you’re working at home. There’s been a lot of advice about how we should sit at a desk, but generally, they all agree that posture wise, it’s all about what feels natural. Widely less publicised is how to prevent eye strain. Our eyes are so important to us and are often described as the window to our souls. We are starting to understand now, more than ever, the need to look after them and keep them in tip-top condition. Whilst the amount of time that we spend staring at screens offers us unprecedented flexibility with regard to where we work, it’s no secret that it can adversely affect the health of our eyes over time. So, what are the top tips that you can do to restrict the potential damage to your eyes when working from home?

1. By far the most important thing to get right is your lighting. Not only is it vital that you maintain the

right level of light during daylight through to the darker hours, but it is also very important to minimise glare on the screen as this can tire your eyes quickly. a. Ideally have natural light coming in on either side of your monitor rather than behind or in front of you. b. Use floor and desk lights at the side of your monitor as task lighting c. Wall lights are a great source of flexible task lighting; you can also get some that can be adjusted, so you can direct the light exactly where it is comfortable. d. Consider using dimmable lights and bulbs to increase the effects your lights have on your workspace. This will allow you to coincide with the ever-changing natural light levels in the room. e. Ensure that you have ample task lighting (desk, floor and wall lights or even a ceiling pendant) as these will need to be on all of your working day f. Have additional ambient lighting that you can use when daylight starts to fade g. More lights offer more flexibility as you can choose which ones you have turned on. The more flexibility you have, the more comfortable your eyes will be…

A

2. Adjust the monitor so that any materials reflecting your lights sources are not reflected. a. Consider rearranging these items or replacing them if needs be. b. Ideally, the monitor should be sited around 50 to 75 centimetres away from your eyes with the top of your screen in line with your eyes.

3. Use the 20-20 rule to help your 20/20

vision. a. Every 20 minutes look away from your screen for around 20 seconds. This exercises your eyes and gives them a rest from the harsh backlight of your screen. So, look after your eyes with lighting that’s pleasing to the eye! Come and see more of our impressive range of home office lights…

Illuminating choices that keep our technology flowing. Here at The Lighting Company, we are constantly looking for lights that give you more. More style, more quality and more choice! We are the obvious choice for you to come to as your first port of call for lighting and our latest editions highlight our predisposition for being amongst the first to predict trends and functionality that you will love. With four out of five adults in the UK owning a Smartphone, it’s clear that we are a nation of technology lovers. We are also house proud, keeping our homes fresh and comfortable and treating ourselves to gadgets and comforts to make life altogether more enjoyable.

So, wouldn’t it be perfect to have everyday items that we need to come with a charger?! Well, it’s good news as in-built chargers are now being catered for, making better use of space as well as adding convenience. We’re delighted with our everexpanding range of lights with USB chargers and inductive chargers. Built in functionality within our homes to charge and store our best buddy has become increasingly important. See overleaf for a selection of the ranges available... Pictured Below:

The need to have technology close at hand along with maintaining a tidy home does come with a certain challenge… As we are on our devices for extended periods of time, they need charging regularly and these charging cables littered around each socket in our homes can be a bug-bear for many of us. Some homes have a lack of plug sockets for all of these chargers which leads to other electrical appliances being unplugged to facilitate charging our phone.

Lights with USB charger & Shelf

Tuck your phone next to your bed in the evening, so you and your closest companion can re-charge together. Our phones are fast becoming the most important item in our lives, often now being used instead of wallets, pedometers, alarm clocks and many more items which have fallen by the wayside in favour of more streamlined and convenient accessibility.

BEE-UTIFUL HEXAGON LIGHTING Lighting that’s got us buzzing with excitement!

Hexagons are everywhere. When you pay close attention, you start to notice these in nature, and you start seeing this pattern in all places. Simply look and you will find. With dependable strength and beauty, you can see why this pattern is replicated in several light fitting designs. Ceiling lights, wall lights, table lamps and floor lamps. Utilising the geometry of circles, squares, triangles and more. The popular trend of geometric lighting remains prevalent. It’s the hexagon which has captured our creativity, as they are the centre of universal coherence which ties things together.

The reason we like this light is also because of its versatility. It can be used in multiple ways for example above a table or a screen in restaurants or above a bed. A feeling of intrigue and illusion is created when you can hang this pendant in front of a mirror, producing a myriad of reflections and creating a spectacle of space and light. Not only does it create a mesmerising aesthetic it will also maximise the amount of light in a room.

Social media is a great place for inspiration when doing a home decor project. However, often we can’t afford to make our whole house Instagram worthy. We all adore looking at the pictureperfect lifestyles, but sadly without the necessary budget, they become objects of desire that many feel doomed to never replicate. It can be a very daunting and demotivating experience when your aspirations and budget don’t live in the same orbit. When I see images of food, it’s enough to make your mouth water, yet I’ve got to admit seeing others culinary works of art does make me feel a bit like an underachiever. When the budget only allows for beans on toast; it’s hardly a worthy offering for social media, but none the less, I have to eat! Talking of social media, there is a phrase that’s banded about that and I for one, just love “fake it till you make it”! This little phrase we’ve adopted applies also to making over little vistas in your home. It could sound quite shallow but in reality, it’s about light, little touches of loveliness around your home, which does more for lifting your spirits than you realise. It makes you happy and helps you to feel proud of you home! It makes that little vignette work as a showoff moment. This got us thinking about what actually makes a home look amazing, even if you are on a tight budget. Is there a recipe? Perhaps it is bright, clean and well-staged living rooms… Or picture-perfect clutter free spaces? We think that it is really the ‘photo shoot’ style images that manage to say something about you, your lifestyle and your personality which are truly and honestly the most appealing.

B

If you can only do one thing at a time to refresh your home, then start small. Perhaps choose to revamp the hallway, or perhaps go smaller still; perhaps just dress that little table in the hallway or do the sideboard in the living room!

The don’t have to be big home improvements, even small incremental changes can have a massive impact. Showing a section of your home that you’ve spent thought and time creating speaks volumes against a backdrop of utilising what you already have.

It goes without saying that it’s best to start with a clear room, storing away the clutter as this will help you to re-imagine the space. When it’s empty enough to see what you have to work with, select a table top or other small surface and be inspired by our little curated collections. You may well have some treasures to dress the area already; even the simplest of accessories can look splendid in the right light. Adding a table lamp has got to be the quickest and easiest way to brighten and brings the fastest results. Theme your accessories to match the lamp as this is probably your most expensive and therefore your investment piece. If, however you have a priceless or treasured object, then give that centre stage and choose a new lamp that compliments it. See how simple styling can become an instant Instagram hit. Have you tried some of these looks? We’d love to see your interpretation. Create a little masterpiece of your own and show it off to the world. The SPL takes a traditional concept and reworks it into a contemporary offering for todays homes. As a nation, we love cluster ceiling pendants, so they are set to stay amongst our favourites for years to come. This features integral LEDs, so there will be no bulbs to change. The lampholders feature a lip which accommodates any easy fit shade of your choice to complete the look! Each suspension cable can be adjusted when installing to customise your style.

NEW LIGHTS

THAT WE LOVE

The FALCON is an LED ceiling pendant that packs a punch! The integral LEDs sit within a cylindrical inner shade which diffuses any glare, making it ideal in living rooms and over dining tables. With strong symmetrical styling, this contemporary light has echoes of Art Deco geometrics teamed with a crisp look which we call Art Geo.

The Light

The YARI was designed in Japan to appeal to our curious natures and allow for us to change the look in an instant. A slim, cylindrical LED ceiling pendant which is available in white, black, silver and gold which can be used on its own, or with an option of 3 accessories to keep the look fresh. A shallow dish reflector in white or black will spread the light for a wider illumination. A ‘mountain’ lens features an escarpment which pushes the light to the outer angles whilst minimising glare. Or a bubble lens which refracts the light from the LED for a subtle sparkle! These simply screw in, so you can change them in the blink of an eye.

A seamless fusion of contemporary geometric style with a nostalgic antique brass finish, the ILARIO is a perfect addition to any age of home. It’s handmade in India and is designed to capture attention from every viewing angle.

Issue 12

Its workmanship is clear to see, right down to the clever hinged glazed panel to make changing the bulb a piece of cake! Constellations are very now, so grab a piece of the night sky for your ceiling.

Coming back in vouge is a love for warm fabrics, such as felt and velvet. Far from the fussiness that we associate with the 80’s, we love it teamed with the clean lines and styling of a more modern age. The LARA ceiling pendant with its warm grey tones and firey orange woollen inner and decorative seam proffers a sophistication that’s perfect for the dining table

Continuing our love of texture, a colourful offering with a string frame, the RANDOM takes us on a journey of self-expressionism where conformity can have a burst of the unexpected within its charm. It’s a great way to ensure that no matter what colour you change your décor to, this will always match or contrast to it!

The JAVIER ceiling pendant successfully teams a reminiscence of history and far-flung travels combined with a modern finish. Full of the charm of a Moroccan sunset, the illumination gently shimmers through the hammered texture for an evocative effect.

SPRING INTO ACTION! PREPARE YOUR GARDEN FOR THE NEW SEASON Believe it or not Spring and Summer are on the way! Longer and brighter days are ahead and now is the time to get your outdoor spaces ready for the coming season. Keen gardeners will already have made plans but for the rest of us here are a few hints and tips.

• Tidy up! – Your garden will have taken a battering over winter so get the gloves on and clear up the debris and fallen leaves and give the garden a good spring clean. Clean up flower beds and borders and add some compost/manure/fertiliser to put new heart into your soil and get your plants off to the best possible start. • Out with the old – plants that have not survived the winter should be removed. Shrubs and plants that have made it will need to be tidied up. Herbaceous plants can generally be cut right back. Shrubs are best pruned after flowering – those that bloom in summer or autumn can usually be pruned in early spring. • In with the new – when you have tidied up you will be able to see where any gaps are. Look upon these as planting opportunities and invest in some exciting new plants! • Clean the greenhouse – if you are lucky enough to have a greenhouse now is the time to give it a good clean to prevent buildup of pests and diseases • Check out fixtures and fittings – repair any damaged decking, fencing, gates and trellis. Do paths and patios need a pressure wash? • Do your garden tools pass muster? – if not give them a clean-up. Don’t forget the lawn mower – get it serviced and blades sharpened so you are ready to go. • Sow seeds – many flower and vegetable seeds can be sown from March onwards. Some with a longer growing season such as tomatoes and peppers can be sown even earlier in a propagator. • Create a compost area – turn your unwanted ‘green waste’ such as leaves, lawn clippings, vegetable peelings and weeds into nutrient rich super food for your soil and plants. • Quick fix – transform the area around your front door, by planting up a few pots or hanging baskets for an instant display – include a mix of summer flowering bulbs, foliage plants and flowers.

"How good is your garden lighting?"

B

C

With daylight beginning to extend into the evenings once more, now is an excellent time to re-evaluate your outdoor lighting. As a minimum we would recommend giving your existing fittings a good clean. Before doing this please ensure the power is turned off. Wash carefully with clean water to remove any dirt and salt deposits – do this even if they look clean. If they are particularly dirty, add a little diluted washing up liquid but be sure to wash thoroughly with clean water afterwards. Many gardeners do not appreciate what a difference good lighting can make to their gardens and outdoor spaces. Most of us are probably aware that having lights on outside after dark will increase security but when it comes to creative garden lighting many of us are in the dark, so to speak. By bringing our gardens back to life as the sun goes down, we can extend the time we spend outdoors.

Light Bulbs Come

It’s fair to say that lighting has always been the crowning glory of interior designs. With ever-evolving technologies and designs being available, they can illuminate and highlight a design theme like no other. Two such current trends are oversized lights and bare bulb lighting; these have collided together to create the celestial beauty of oversized LED filament bulbs. Decadent and decorative, they replace the need to add shades or accessories as they themselves are the stars of the show! An altogether more contemporary approach to bare bulb lights, the glowing ember filaments shine though with an effortless wow factor. As you can see each filament has a unique style to add to the intrigue, from spiralling methodical shapes to unhindered waves. When switched on the filaments come on instantaneously as opposed to the old fashioned fluorescent bulbs.

They come in all shapes and sizes from a standard size right up to a giant size and as they are just the bulb, no electrician is required to fit them! They simply screw in to an existing Edison Screw (E27) lampholder, or you can take the time to pair it with a smarter looking suspension. Most of the designs are available in a gold glass or titanium finish. The gold glass option has a brighter lumen output whilst the titanium reflects like mirror chrome when unlit. We love mixing the shapes and finishes together to create a fascinating and eclectic vibe. These refined and sophisticated light bulbs really add a debonair flair to any setting. Each bulb is handmade so are individual and they come beautifully packaged to reach you in pristine condition. Create your very own coveted creation with a big bulb!
